1. Intro: Hi there. And welcome to my Pathan Toolbox Siris of short classes. I am Daniela from quirky suing, and I am a self taught surface pattern designer based in Bucharest, Romania. Whether I have the green, some or not, is debatable, but my love for it was treating flowers and designing breaking floral patterns is not as a trained in here. I love tools, shortcuts and tricks to make bath and designing, straightforward and more intuitive. Join my pattern toolbox classes. Here I share tips and tricks to make surface pattern designing so much easier. 2. Class Description: Welcome to my button toolbox. Short classes specifically designed for illustrator pattern makers. In this class, I will show you how to create an intricate, have dropped pattern in Illustrator. I will focus and share my tips and tricks to help you design a complex have dropped pattern where he'll need to look twice to identify the repeat style. So what's the difference between a base equipe on behalf? Drop If you're designing a basic repeat the pattern repeat is up and down and side to side . On the other hand, if you're designing 1/2 drop, repeat, you repeat. Tile will be staggered vertically or horizontally like this polka dot pattern is one better than the other. Is there a standard as to planted? Choose one over the other one? The answer is no. Choosing their obit style is up to you. It reflects your design style and can be dependent on your project needs. During this class, we're not making a polka dot pattern will actually be creating a detailed have drop. So as a class project, follow along my method and create the complex repeat tile to build our half drop pattern around post your pattern and experiments the student area to get feedback on your work, engage with other students and make the most out of the class happy making. 3. Basic vs Half Drop: Let's go through a couple of examples. See, what are the differences between the basic and the half drop? Repeat. When designing a basic repeat, the pattern repeat is up and down and side to side. The basic repeat style can be a simple as a single motif, repeated up and down or as complex as a seamless repeat tile. This is an example of a basic repeat built around a single object or motive. The second example we have here is the seamless bathroom. This is a complex, queer repeat tile, but the pattern itself is still a basic repeat pattern. Will get the continuous seamless look only if we re beat the tile up and down. I left the right. I particularly like this third example, just like the previous example. This is still a seamless repeat tile that was used to build a basic pattern, but the overall look seems staggered like 1/2 drop pattern would look like. So what's 1/2 drop pattern when creating 1/2 drop? Repeat. The pattern Repeat is staggered vertically or horizontally at the given pace offset again. The repeat out can be a simple or as complex as a designer wanted to be, but steak again. The first example. If we take this motif and duplicated in the staggered fashion, we're getting 1/2 drop repeat pattern with a 1/2 offset. In this class, I will share my method of creating a complex half drop with virtually impossible to see repeat style similar to the back. And we have right here join me in my next video, where we will build the repeat style, bringing your sketches or create your motives in illustrator How to make our intricate pattern. 4. Build the repeat tile: welcome back. By this point, I assume you have opened illustrator and important or created the motifs you'll be using to design the half drop when creating detailed repeats. I like to work in the 1000 Big Sell Square Art Board as a reminder. I'm using 300 dp I resolution as some white gate as the color profile, depending on your purpose, is for using the pattern you'll need to adjust the settings. For example, if you're uploading the pattern, spoon flour and have it printed on fabric. You'll need to have 150 dp. I resolution an RGB as color profile. Let's start building our repeat tile. I will start by adding a background color to my pattern tile by creating a square the size of my art board. So 1000 big souls I did this even if I used, like as the pattern background color as it makes organizing the bathroom tile easier. Start adding your motifs from the middle of the art board and gradually move outwards to add variety to your pattern and have a detailed design. Play around with the orientation and scale of your motives to make it difficult for the fewer to identify your repeat tile at the same motive in different areas of your art board . As you're progressing with your pattern and populating the art board, get close to the boundaries of your art board without actually exceeding them. Use the linemen tools two horizontally or vertically. Align objects to the boundaries of your art board. Select your in dire artwork to verify your still designing within your 1000 bigs little limits and make the appropriate adjustments to create a nice balance and to make the repeat tile margins virtually undetected. Work alternatively at the edges off the tile by adding motives. An artwork been creating 1/2 drop fill in the spaces to create the uniform. Look where the pattern towel will be side to side and the words will be staggered. This technique will ensure that your pattern will look rich and full and will be that much harder to see the repeat top. Of course, you need to decide before hands if you're gonna go for a break by color for brick by prototype off pattern meaning you have to decide if you're half drop will be staggered vertically or horizontally, and you also need to decide the offset you'll be using 5. Using the pattern tool: when you're happy with your design. Selectable artwork within your aren't board double check that all motifs are within the boundaries. If you're 1000 pixel square cardboard, open the pattern tool by going to object factor make. I use the pattern to a lot, so I've even created a custom shortcut for it. The default tiled type is greed, the basic creepy. So if you want to create the half drop, repeat. He was the drop down arrow to choose between Brick Pyro or column. I'll choose brick by row, and they will said that offset to 1/2 if everything looks right. If you're pattern a name and save it, you cannot use your pattern. That's any other swatch. Alternatively, you can see if your repeats watch by hand the old fashioned manual way. You think the pattern tool We previously created a break by row pattern. This time, let's create a break by column. Repeat. So to do this group all artwork within your 1000 Pixels Square to achieve a break by column half drop look based two copies of the square on the right side of the pattern. Make sure they are perfectly aligned. One square with the minus 500 pixel offset the other one plus 500 pixel offset. Do the same for the left side of the original pattern square. You'll end up with it shaped object. You need to create a clipping mosque of 2000 big. So by 1000 pixel. This is the size of the repeat pile for this half drop pattern, starting from a 1000 pixel tile. So grab your rectangle tool. Draw a rectangle of 2000 pixel by 1000 pixels. Make sure it's on top of the eighth shaped object and perfectly aligned to the center. Select gold artwork and create a sleeping mask. The shortcut to create the tipping mask is control Plus seven. Or you can go to object clipping, mask and hit. Make. Grab your path, find their tool. And should the crop tool look at the shape of your clipping mask. This is your repeats. Watch, Select and dragon. Drop it in the swatches panel. You cannot use it as any other spot as a fill or stroke. If you're using the manual approach, you can t stay safe. The repeats watch and use it on print on demand website. Submit for challenges. Add in your portfolio, etcetera. Congratulations you've designed you have dropped pattern that this point you can play around with colors and experiment. New color race. An easy way to do this is by using the re color artwork to If you're unfamiliar with this tool and how to apply it to change colors throughout your entire pattern, please go ahead and watch my here in my class pattern toolbox. Easy way three color patterns. 6. Create Project and Thanks: I hope you have enjoyed my class. Found it informative. And hopefully you have learned something new to make pattern designing easier.
