1. Introduction · Travel · Paris, France · The City of Lights · The City That Excites · Budget Travel T: Hi, thank you for joining me. My name is Thomas, seen as shielding. And today I'm deviating a little bit normally. And you can see by my courses, I create a lot of business content that's unknown. But today I wanted to have a little bit more fun. So I've decided to create a course on traveling to Paris. I live in France. After 30 years of trying to get here. My first time I even heard the word Paris. I was 15 years old. And I remember flipping through these crazy teenage magazines and it just seemed like everybody who was anybody in Hollywood every time they May 2 pennies. The first thing they wanted to do was travel to Paris. And as a young girl growing up in upstate New York, middle-class family never would have thought I would have an opportunity to see Paris. At today. I used to just dream, what does this place like? Why does everybody want to save this city? What's going on in Paris? That now 88 million people a year in this place. So I spent the next 20 years dreaming about that. But finally, when Act turn 35 years, oh, that was the first time I had the opportunity to see what all the racket was about with Paris. And it didn't disappoint everything. You've seen, movies, everything you see in the magazines, the beautiful architecture, the museums. I couldn't believe it. The food, the bread and cheese. I didn't even drink, but at tasted the sip of wine and I'm like, What is going on here. And from that day, age of 35. And I put my paintings together every year to go back to visit Paris because it left that kind of impression on me. No, I'm not rich, wasn't then and that now. But I learned the art of all season travel. But it travel without sacrificing some of the luxuries. There's an in-between budget and cheap. You want to know that. You don't want to travel shape. You want to try to stick to that budget. You know your life, you know what you have, whether you save your pennies from one-year, two-year, three-year FADH yields six months. You know, your but I'm here to tell you, no matter your budget, you can travel to Paris. And I'm not kid because now guess what? After 37 years, I'm actually living here. I am semi retired in France, in the south of France with a tiny apartment which is where I am now. It was always my dream. Paris left that mark on me at 35 years old. And then after that, little by little, I branched out a little bit and visited these Bordeaux and needs and all these different places. And I realized one day went out mole here. And now that I'm in the South, the training is only 3.5 hours to pass. So now I can still get on that train at 738 o'clock in the morning. I'm having lunch in the city in lengths by noon. Or as they say here, play midi, which is midday. So as you can see, I get excited about France and especially Paris. It is All that and more. So this course is create creative. But those of you who won, I mean, you've been dreaming about this. A lot of things have gotten in the way. Whether it's the band deeming, whether it's a job change, whether it's family, your family is growing, whether there's other things on your plate, you've been dreaming about this. And so now it's time to figure out what's your reality. And the only thing you got to figure out is what short time frame. Now I've got lots of notes. Look at this. It's in my lab. This is your course because I want to share everything. Dow 30, it's already yesterday, love now 64, about the third, 65 in January. So I am going to share everything I know about Paris, that's my place. And nice DO get to pairs three or four times a year. Even living here in the South. I love this city, but my budget is still tight especially now. And I still stay in some of the same places. E to the sum of the same restaurants. A thing about bears, but around a couple thousand years, it's not gone change. So whether you make it either this year or next year or when you get here, Paris will be here. So let's get started planning your, whether it's your first or your next visit, you know, doesn't matter. I want to share with you. We're going to talk about checklists which allow hotels all these ratings. What is this 1234 or five-star rating? You know, I'm from the United States. I'm not sure what country you're from watching this course. But in the United States, five-star, that's our topped up Hotel in Paris. It's the same, but now you're moving into palaces. Palace hotels are the five-star hotels and barriers you actually get to stay in a two or three star hotel. And it's not something that you want to run in half. I'm going to share all that with you. The bus metro getting from the airport, you know, the gates, the terminals, the freebies that you can get, just about everything and you know, how to eat well, how to stay a week, 10 days, you know, even a month. Maybe put your budget together, right? Even a month. So sit back, relax, enjoy the course. And I have created small segments for each topic. So wherever you are in your planning process, you can grab that topic and reveal it. You don't have to look at the entire course. So if you try to figure out, Oh, how do I catch the bus in Paris? Boom, go to the bus section. I talked about the app that they haven't got an app you put in, where you go in and where you are and where you're trying to get to and there you are. You know, when you talk about dining, boom, there's the category. Just flip to the lesson that covers that. When you're looking for hotels, Paris gap as this thing, left bank. Right bank. What is that? Now, at first I was like, What do you mean? Left-brain? Right-brain. What is that? Well, those are personalities of the neighborhoods in Paris. And you're either going to be a left bank person or a right bank person. Found out on the left bank person. I like it kind of casual, informal. You might like it a little more glyphs that you might be our right bank bursa, and we're going to talk about that too. So yeah, let's get started. And thanks for joining me and I will see you in the next lecture.
2. Paris · The Checklist: Welcome back As Thomas C. Now I'm ready. Ben, paper, we're going to move right into this checklist. Okay? So, you know, if you're a list person which I had at recommend you become very quickly. You're going to want to take notes or at a very minimum, you're going to want to visit this section as you're doing your packing. So let's get started. Okay, passport. And that's obvious. You got to need a password to get the pairs. I can only speak for the United States because that's where I'm from and that's what I know about the United States. A passport to France is required. They up to 90 days. That's our country. Your country, your passport may have different regulations. You may be able to stay longer six months or less, 30 days. But you want to make sure your passport is currently. Not only that, sometimes when you get to the airport and you get to customers, they check the expiration date on your passport. They want to see that your expiration date is at least three months out from the time that you will be departing. So for example, if you're arriving in September and your passport, you only stay for a couple of weeks. But Joe passport expires in. Uber might be questioned. They might think, Well, your past four to scan to two expired prior to your departure. And you're like, well, no, I'm leaving in two weeks. Well, no, this isn't the rule. So prepared for that. Make sure your passport has a low window. Every customs agent who will be different. Well, everybody meet this objection. Will everybody be subject to it? But I'm throwing it out there just to let you know so you don't have any surprises because it has happened to be over the course of 30 years has happened four times? Yes. My passport had the required 90 days out from my departure flight returned to the US. That's Intel. Next visa. Are you staying longer for three months? We staying longer than three months. You're going to need a visa. My first time I stay here for eight months, I had to apply for a one-year visa. That's an addition to my passport. So that's going to be required. So you can stay up to three months, no visa. But if you're gonna stay beyond that, you need to apply for a visa. And yes, it was a lot of work, but I was glad I got and I've been renewing it every year since. I like having the flexibility to stay here up to one here. Sometimes I don't stay a year, but it's nice to have that option. So passport, visa next, Here's a good one. Photocopies. Make copies of your passport and all your visa, and leave it with a friend back in the United States or whatever country you're from. Make a copy, leave it with a friend. If you happen to lose your passport, you're in luck. You can contact your friend or family member. They can fax it to you. You can get it to your embassy and they can issue you another passport. So if you don't have a copy of your passport and your passport is lost or stolen and urine for road. I can't emphasize this enough. Please make copies of your important documents and leave a copy back at all with a family member or friend. You won't regret it. Okay. All also, make another copy of that passport visa and secure it somewhere else on your person. So you add your passport, your original, and you have a copy secured in two separate places. When you point your in pairs. There you go. You never know. So basically going to make two copies it to Aren't they would make three Libo with a family member, leave one with the brand, you keep one for yourself. It's overkill. But you know, and the times of emergency overkill all of a sudden sounds like you did the minimum. You will be glad you have a copy of your passport because it has all your sensitive information. And then it's just so much easier for the American Embassy to get you something temporary to get you back out of the country. There you go. Alright? Credit cards spread to different credit cards, okay? Just in case you have trouble with one or lose 12 different credit cards. Times these credit card companies, they see transactions over in a foreign country and a boat block. Now what you're gonna do and you've got one credit card, bring to, you know, you've got to inform your bank that you're leaving to go out of town. But my bank, even though they know that only half of that leave it out, live in here. Every now and then, my credit card debit cards don't work. I contact my bank back into state. What's going on? Well, we see foreign activity on your credit card. Well, thank you very much for that and thank you for protecting me. But I mean, in case you hadn't looked over my account, you can see I've been here now for almost four years. And you can see transactions in France. And you can see I have not reported in anything. So please do not block my credit card or debit card, But thank you for the security. You want to bring two in case you're blocked and you need to access your money. Travel, insurance, flight cancellation, that's up to you. Sometimes when you buy your ticket with a certain credit card that comes with flight insurance, That's for trip cancellation, urgencies, getting you back, That's up. You can consider it's not expensive, but definitely consider it, okay? Alright. Medications. If you happen to be taking medications, bring that original doctors know that prescription as well as your bottles, keep that on you in your purse or your carry on. Do not put that in your luggage. That's not going to go down with Britain. They scan that luggage through customs and you've got drugs in your luggage, even though it's a prescription drugs in your luggage. So you want your drug in your purse or your briefcase, or your carry-on. So you can talk about Joe drugs in case somebody brings it up. Have the prescription. Drugs are designed. That way, you'll never have any problem. This is my checklist. And it's just been sailing through with this checklist for years now, but they do stop me. Then they asked me about a my draw eggs, which happens to be from blood pressure. It could be for anything, could be for your diabetes, that can be for your your cholesterol. All I could be for what ever? It is a drug. It's a controlled substance. So don't sleep on that. Okay. Carry your prescription. Alright, let's see. Copies of your destination address. If you're staying in a hotel, staying at another place, Airbnb or wherever you're staying, make sure you have a copy of the trust that you're staying. Leave a copy of that with a family member or friend that people know where you are. And also if you don't speak the language we need, you're at the airport. You can just show the address to the taxi driver. Simple. Make a copy of your destination address. Alright. Let's see, let's see what else. Hotel reservations. Of course, it's obvious you're going to print those out. Again. Copies. I think you see where this is headed. Leave a copy, family or friend, let people know where you are. You know, most of you travelled going to be just flawless and nothing's going to happen. But for that, 1 tenth of 1% of a chance, be color, let people know where you are. And this way it's easy for them to track you down in case they need to get in touch with you. So make a copy W hotel reservation, make a copy of that address, leave it with a family member or friend. Okay. Copy reservation, ID, money, checklists. Make sure you arrive in Paris with about a 100 or 200 year-old. I request this from my bank before I leave, a few weeks before. And then I can change my currency at my bank right through the United States. And then I arrive with just a few dollars in my pocket to pay for whatever where there's something to eat The airport, whether it's just for the taxi that you want to have a few 100 year 100. That's usually enough. But to hundreds of plates, €8 in your pocket, can you exchange those those US dollars or your currency at the airport? Yes. But kids are ready to pay a fee out of this world is better. You do that before you leave home. That airport currency exchange. I will say a prayer for you. If you decide you're going to use that because they come up, take your buddy, and that would almost nothing in terms of your Exchange, do it before you leave. And then once you get settled in and we'll talk about that a little later, I don't recommend the United even walk around with k dash. I'm going to recommend you use your debit and credit cards while you're here and just keep on you why you hear and you hear why later. Okay. So again, notify your bank. No, you're gonna be out of the country. It's a big one. Now. Now there'll be blocking your car. That's a big one, and pull out that currency, a 100 and 200, 100 year-old. So you land with something in your pocket. Mobile service, international carriers. You might have to buy a little extra, little thing for that. Do you want to be able to talk to people? They'll forget. I'm gonna be talking about communication. There's a lot of free ways to communicate. But if you have to have your mobile and you need your regular phone number, get that international plan for a week or two or mom contact your server, your carrier and just tell them you want to get it that 30 days. That's it. You take it off your phone to 30 days. You can do that. They don't advertise that. Everybody thinks you are locking into a one-year, two-year contract, But you don't. So contact your mobile carrier telling you the international package. But 30 days, if you do two weeks, get it two weeks. Next. Survival tools for your flight. Noise canceling, earplugs or headphone. And that's a big flag. Several 100 people on that flight. Depending on where you are as a long flight, Los Angeles, Paris, 11 hours, New York, Paris, seven hours. I've plugged my ears and the beginning and it didn't release to watch all the movies, listen to music. It land just exhaustive. I've learned over the years it's best to eat a little bit and then go to sleep and wake up refreshed when I get there. But if you're excited and you don't want to hear a little noise, bring your and noise canceling headphones, or at least appear cheap earplugs to block out all of it's going around because there are some people who are going to talk for the entire 11 hours, fairly exhaustive, or seven hours or however long it is, you're going to be exhausted. So do that power adapter. This is the EU. So depending on the country you're coming from. Yeah, thanks. You know, get that adapter. That plugs are not the same. He had his little blood that you put in and we got these little strange square one's brain, your adapter or you will not be able to charge your phone. That's so important. Okay. Even when you're waiting in the airport on your way back, you know, flight deck, you might want to charge your phone. You don't need that EU, that European adapter to plug into your phone. So bring your debt. Okay, Let's see, upload your preferred travel apps and we're going to talk about that a little bit later. Travel apps, navigational apps, upload all that before you leave that we had sitting on your phone, you've got the apps and it's just so much easier again and talk about that later. Getting around becomes a cake walk. You don't speak the language. It's the cake walk error about and know the translation software and that's the way you would go after four years. Now I'm almost balloon in French, but when I first arrive, oh man, it was not a good experience. Now is the best of experiences because it began to be in a foreign country, you need to speak the language. And if you can't speak the language is fluid. So you'll be back where they were sold traveler, or whether you're with a group. Download the app before you leave and listen to some of the phrases pre-programmed, some of the most common phrases in there. You're going to be set. All right, Let's see. Traveled with your own personal Wi-Fi spot. Most of the phones have options for that. So that's easy to find. But I just want to throw it out there. Get yourself a personal Wi-Fi hotspot. Everywhere as wireless, pretty much in Paris, even certain parts of the city, it's three. But just in case you got us in an emergency email and you don't have access and that personal Wi-Fi spot, my son taught me that if that 35-year-old, he tells me everything. Alright. Corkscrew and I know you love to sip wine. Tastings, traveled with your own courts groups, you because they're going to be Ds when you buy your food. Pig me, sit in a beautiful Parisian park. And guess what? It's not illegal. Let's sip a wine and the like. What is then? It's France. After they get a ticket arrested, they drink a little bit of why they're begging. And your CI that it's not a crime, bring your own corkscrew over here. They're a little pricey. Get to us of a course group, bring it with you. Because if you love great wines, you are going to be sampling you only owe through Paris. Okay, Well, that's my checklist. There you go. If I think of anything else, out, edit on the backend of the course. See you in the next lecture.
3. Paris · Charles de Gaulle Airport · Aéroport de Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG): Hi, welcome back. And this lecture. Simple, Ronnie, I'm talking about one thing. And that's the major airport in Paris, which is Charles de Gaulle Airport. So depending on which country you find from, okay, you're going to be wanting to book your flight into Charles de Gaulle Airport. Now Paris has two airports, Charles de Gaulle and orally I'll talk about early next. But Charles de Gaulle is usually the one where you're gonna get the great airfare and the rates. They don't have the most non stops, usually from urine origination city. This is the main airport. The D, G is the airport symbol. And the airport name is Charles de Gaulle, Paris. All I want to say for now, make a note.
4. Paris · Orly Airport · Aéroport de Paris Orly (ORY): Hi, Sam Messina and yet another quick session. The second airport in Paris is called Paris orally, the airport code is 0. Our y. Sometimes depending on where you are, I don't know where you are in the world. But you might get a better rate of light, might be better priced for you. Flying into orally. Cdg, Charles de Gaulle from the last lecture, also known as Rafi airport. And orally, they actually have a shuttle that goes back and forth between the two. Just know that. So if you make a reservation and coming here, arriving in Charles de Gaulle and going out, you're arriving or departing from early. That's not a problem. There are only maximum an hour away from each other, maybe 30 minutes, I can't remember. But there is a sharp that takes you between the two. So even if you're connecting, you can get from one to the other. Let's say about poorly. So now you know the two airports in Paris, Charles de Gaulle, Cdg, that's what you're going to be putting on your reservation or orally. What else did I put in here? Yeah. You know, already orally flies a lot of flights domestically throughout France. Well, that's a real big domestic hub, as well as other countries in and around Spain, Portugal, Italy. You can catch puddle jumpers from orally, Charles de Gaulle have attended to be really long haul international flights. So check both. That's why I'm throwing them out there. When you're doing your reservations, see which has the better price. This is, of course, I'll say When you a little bit of money. So let's keep those budget's tight. Check your round trip. Even check a one way one way into only one way out to Charles de Gaulle. Irr. With your reservation with both of the airports. The annual fine, the best deal for you, and also the best arrival and departure times. So you don't have to lock into booking a round trip to Charles the goal and back or orally him back. You can do one way in and one way out of the other. And it might save you a little bit of money, but definitely do the math and check. See you in the next lecture.
5. Paris Arrival · Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) Airport Terminal(s) 1 · 2 · 3: Hi, welcome back. Let's talk about Paris. Charles de Gaulle, C, D, G. You have arrived from wherever it is. But your origination sitting, when you arrive at Charles de Gaulle Airport, you're going to see there are three terminals. Terminals, one, terminal to terminal a3. That's it. Terminal two. And I'm going to definitely consult my notes. That's the main terminal. Terminal two. You're going to have to a to C, to D, to E, to F to G. Terminal one is not the main term. Terminal two is the main terminal. Terminal is not the main terminal. Now, if your flight arrives at terminal one, get on that Ferrari. Show. It's gotta be marked C, D, G, which is Charles de Gaulle, V a L, which is just that free shuttle. That free shuttle takes you to terminal, to terminal one, terminal breed baggage claim, everything C, D, G, V, a Free, Free, Free show. When you come off of your of your flight, shift jobs, a court, you're going to see that as big as DAY, C, D, G, v, a, l. So depending on the terminal you arrive in and where you're trying to go. You're going to want to get to terminal two because if you ran and won or you rather than three, yet got to get to terminal two. Okay. That's the main terminal. That's where the train station and your connection to Paris is going to be. That's where the taxis, the left is. Every thing is terminal two. And I want you to just lock that in your mind and you know, nothing to be afraid of shuttles for you. And it's beautiful. So when you get off of your flight and you walk into the terminal, just look up and there'll be people standing there too. Then the police, they are wonderful. They're standing there, yeah, with their automatic rivals. They're bilingual and they can give you directions. They're going to be people from the airport standing there. They're going to be bilingual or trilingual. So ask for directions. You can do your research before you leave home. But I'm telling you right now, terminal two, if you happen to be flying in and you land in terminal two, like I usually do for the United States. That's the terminal because then from there I can hop my trainees into the city, hot my tack, these hot the buses, whatever I need to do. Okay. And if you arrive in terminal one or three, just get just enough to terminal two and it's minutes away. It's not a big deal, is grab your lucky grad, come off the flight on the Shuttle. Grab your leg is ending, you're off and running in terminal two. Okay. What else did I want to say? Okay. Terminal 2. Yeah, that's the TGV at the TGV rail style. So that's a big connection. What else? Dot-dot-dot, dot-dot-dot. That's about it that I want you to make a note though, 123, those are you terminals. That's really going to be catching your bus, taxi or Metro terminal to that shear main takeaway from this lecture, okay, On to the next.
6. Transport · Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) Airport to Paris City Center · RER B: Hi, I'm Athena, and we're going to continue with Charles de Gaulle Airport, the main important Paris, C, D, G. And we're going to talk about now the RER be and what is that? The RER B is a regional train. This regional train can take you from the airport to the city center. Now remember what I said about terminal two. Okay. Guess what? The RER be only stop that carbonyl what, and the Rory. There you go. So what are you going to have to do? Catch the free shuttle. So if you land in terminal two, you're going to just catch the free shuttle. And to one or three, if you're determined to catch a commuter train into barriers net side though, if this is your first visit to pairs, I'm going to recommend yen not catch the metro. Which to me that's what the RA RB is. It's just the underground train, 45 minutes in the dark, underground. All these people, you're going left and right, you're trying to figure your way out, is, is your first time the pairs I'm going to recommend Take a taxi and yes, it's more. That's a budget item. Or you catch the bus, which we'll talk about later, keeps you above ground so you can see where you go. Now. You're a metro bursa like my son and daughter. The yes, no. Rer be if you're younger, you're not travel in a lot of heavy luggage and you feel a real Sadie? Yes. The RER is facets come in every few minutes and you go straight from Charles de Gaulle Airport to Paris city center. And then from there you can figure out where your hotel is when you get to taxi bus at drove Uber up to you. But we're talking airport now and options from getting from the airport to Paris city center. And the RA RB is an option. So if you feel savvy enough to your that too tired. 3, this is not your first rodeo. Catching a train from Paris airport into the city center, then I'm going to recommend it's only maybe 10-year-old, 12-year-old, 13-year-old. It's not very expensive. And it is quick and get you to the city, but you are underground. And so just be prepared for that. You can hear my voice. I don't like being an undergrad and you're gonna hear that a lot as we go through the course. I like see where I'm going. I like to see in the sites. So if you're anything like me and you're in the kitchen, a taxi or a bus. But if you don't mind the metro, RER be, make a note. This is the lecture to get that detail, he stops at terminal one and terminal three. Let's see what else do I have here to tell you? That that dot-dot-dot. That's it. Yeah. Okay. Terminal one, terminal three, RER be Charles de Gaulle, Paris city center. See you in the next lecture.
7. Transport · Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) Airport to Paris City Center · Bus: Here we are. We're still at the airport, but this is good because everybody is different. Now we're going to talk about briefly getting from the airport, Charles de Gaulle, Cdg into Paris center set of city center, who that's a tongue twister by bus. And I even before I turned 64, app referred the bus. Isn't that just an old lady galvanization about catching the bus versus catch in the metro. Okay. So let me give you a little information on the bus, all right. Option one, it's called the raphe ROI SY bus. They come every 1520 minutes directly from Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport. And you can catch the raphe bus from which terminals do you think that leg? One or three? Terminal two isn't good if you're going to be catching one of the trains into Paris, okay? Or if you're going to be transferring to the TGV, if you arriving in terminal two. So as you can see, there's a trend here for that local ground transport, terminal one and terminal three. That's the move. What else do I need to say? Okay. So you've got the raphe Bus you've got something called the Les bus direct, Ellie booth. And so they think bus and friends booth direct. Alright. Again, that used to be no aircraft bus and they changed the name on it. So now it's lead goose. Okay. So you have the raphe bus again, Terminal 1 or 3. You've got the O bus again, terminal one or three and let's see. Where else. Yeah. Prices. Okay. So they're going to run 15 year-old, 12 year-old, 13 Euro, so allocate 20 years. All right, So that's a long way from a taxi. Taxi is a 100 year-old. Sometimes you can get one for 90. And that's very difficult to try to get a Lyft or Uber from the airport. It's almost impossible because they have different designated areas where they pick you up. I'm not going to wish that on anybody. You're going to just be running around with your luggage. You can have a negative experience from the moment you land. Please budget for the bus or the Aria or B. If you have a little extra money, I'm going to recommend your first time to Paris. Take the taxi. Yeah, it's a lot of traffic. Yes. Is 90 Euro compared to 15 2013. But you're going to be so much more relaxed after that 11 hour flight from LA to Paris or seven hours somebody York or wherever you coming from, Tokyo or London or Sydney, Australia, you're going to be so much more relaxed sitting in a taxi. If you've got a little extra money to blow, I would even recommend you get a driver or private driver. And there are companies that offer that service. I'll include this in the course because I will make those types of personal, private recommendations. But you can research that. Maybe you can do a shared ride with someone with a private car, then it's 50 year-olds H. And then you're really relaxed. They grab your luggage and the baggage claim, put it in the trunk for you, and you just cruise on into pairs for the acts with a nice bottle of water after a long flight. So as you can see, you've got ways, you've got options. The RER be underground, frenetic. You get the bus above grounds to a great price. You can have a private driver pick you up. You can do tag thing. You've got options. See you in the next lecture.
8. Transport · Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) Airport to Paris City Center · Taxi: Okay, Now we're going to talk about just a little bit about taxi. And I've got to talk about this because as simple as it sounds, 0 foreign country, okay? And just like in Mao Guthrie that you land in New York. You man, I Love Lucy Laney. Big cities like Chicago or gotta be people, which is not honest. They're going to be holding those fans telling you to taxi's come with me, Come with me. Well, you know, taxis are regulated in France. And so in parents appear at that airport, Charles de Gaulle, Cdg, and you decide you're going to take a taxi. Wanted to keep one thing in mind, a couple of things in mind. First of all, go to the designated taxi stands. Do not let someone grabbed you at baggage claim telling you they've got a taxi waiting for you outside? One, don't know it. Secure your luggage. If you check the bag. Walk to the designated taxi Stand. There is a person standing there. Taxi, he works for the government. The words maybe Apple is going to signal a taxi for you. Your tack. These are going to have that mark on the top of the car. Please remember this. If you go in and take a taxi, you don't have to worry about this. If you're going to hop the bus, the bus, the bus is going to be written up about Rafi left the bus, the all at random. But if you're going to catch the RER, you don't have to worry about it. The train that the drain there's only one route that you don't add tray to go into barriers. But with a tag thing, do not let somebody of baggage claim hold up that side and you end up within the first 10 minutes of being in pairs, you end up in the wrong place. Please. Promise me. Okay. What else do I have to say? I'm check these. I don't know a lecture that there are some security things you need to think about, especially if you're going to be a Solo Traveler or integer Adler it out. Alright, make sure you take only.
9. Transport · Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) Airport to Paris City Center · Auto: Let's move on to the, really the final chapter on transportation from Charles de Gaulle. And I would be remiss not to mention car rentals. Okay, I almost don't even want to include this in this course because if you thought the New York driver was something, welcome to Paris. I'm telling you right now, I am not going to recommend nor endorse you renting a car when you land at the airport. And going from the airport into the city center of an automobile. Like one. You know, the rules for driving him in Paris know, too. They got all these round the balance throughout the city. 3 the Parisian think the traffic lights are a suggestion, not a law for no one cares about the speed limit. I don't need to go any further. If you insist. I'm renting a car for your first or next tremble, getting from Charles de Gaulle, Paris city center. There are options, okay. Terminal one, Let's see. Yeah, most of them are located in terminal one and terminal two. So you've got a this, you've got budget enterprise, euro car, something called firefly hertz, something called six, into rent, Alamo, advantage dollar rental, national thrifty, and then something called TT car transit. That's on the left got here and, you know, buy because I'm just not even have been talking about car rentals. I wanted you to have a wonderful, wonderful time in Paris. Don't get behind the wheel. If you don't have to let somebody else do the driving and you use the local fine transportation and its shape. Remember where it's supposed to be up budget. But I can honestly say 1.9 year-old has like two bucks. The Metro is cheap, but when you buy a car and it's even cheaper, I can use the word cheap. When I talk about local transport. Embarrassed because it is the best thing going. Everybody's got the card. So even if you're going and you're not stay in a month, I mean, you bought at monthly card, you're down to pennies on a local transport. So if you insist on writing and car, yes, All the big boys is there. Good luck. Because it's it's, it's the driving is difficult in pairs. And that's the last thing. So we've covered Charles de Gaulle. I'm going to wrap up orally in the next lecture.
10. The Arrondissements (Neighborhoods) of Paris · Location Location Location: Okay. I guess when we are finished with the airports. So now that you've got the Charles de Gaulle and you got to orally, you've got to check list. You are ready, packed, landed, ready to head into the city. So let's talk this lecture about location. Location. Location. Where are you going to stay? Like in real estate? Location is everything. If the Save in Paris. All right, So Paris and just give you a little overview. Paris is circular like this because they say in French, comes up, comes down, and it's circular. So some of the neighborhoods kiss each other on the circle. So even if you might be staying in say, the era D small, that's a term I'm gonna give you, error d small, which means section neighborhood. Going to hear that a lot. First, the smoke, the second D small. There are 20 Era BCE mounts in our terminology, neighborhoods in pairs. The last two digits of the zip code on your hotel reservation tells you the D small. So if your zip code, for instance is 75 000 001, you're staying in the first ever, the smell. Does it go for Paris begins with 75. Lot of people who live outside Paris. And they had that zip code that begins with NADH to that, they say, We live in Paris. The true per region. Say you're in the suburbs, buddy. Yeah, they're cliquish that way. Legged New York. You don't live in and that you live in Queens broads, Brooklyn due to add that men had zipcode. Parents is exactly the same seven fat as the first number. Then you have those other three, the last two digits tell you where you're staying. And that easy, it took me almost a decade to figure that out. And you've found it out in a few minutes. So we start from there. So now each section or neighborhood or Eric D. Snow on Paris, it on the streets. When you look up, you see these beautiful ancient street signs and it says where you are. The burst error of the spline fit. These module, say it. So you know where you are at all times that eighth then night the 15th demo, the both you can't get Lawson pairs is a compact city. As you're searching for your hotels. And you start doing your research to the era, these modes, or the last two digits, that's going to play a role called some of the air and D smells land on the left bank. There's that term. And some of the era dismounts land on the right bank. I stay in the seventh. That's the left bank. That's my error. The smell. I like it because it's residential. It's reasonably quiet, it's very elegant. A lot of the major embassies and homes for ambassadors are there. The securities high. And when I'm traveling as a single woman, I like no on that pretty much on every corner. So I love the seventh, great shopping, great restaurants, course all parents are great jobs and great rest, rest. But the seventh, for the last really almost now 30 years, that's my home, away from home. When I take my train from where I'm standing now in the south of France to Paris. Always stay in the seven. I like seeing in the schools in the morning, the kids dressed to go to school. I like go into that and local butcher, a bakery or whatever, bookstore, magazine place. You find your rhythm it is you travel more and more and more to Paris. You will have your favorites too. I guarantee you. We'll talk later about hotel prices and everything. But this is about just helping you become aware of the term era. The smells. That just means neighborhoods, location, location. Some of the air and D smells are right on the river. The senior them, some of them are further away. None of them are that, that far, remember, everything's connected by metro and bus. And the person who designed Paris, ha, he designs that you would never more than a few 100 yards from a metro or pasta. It's incredible. I don't even like public transportation most of the times when I'm in New York visiting my son, I won't even RAD the metro and I certainly don't get on the bus when I'm in Paris. I mean, I got a bus pass. But it's bad because one of the buses are clean and beautiful to walk a few yards, There's my postdoc. I walk a few yards. There's my stop. It set up for the pedestrian. So you're going to love the way Paris is laid out. Now. Back to Arab d smalls. Pay attention to the signs on the streets. You'll see that air, these Montefiore takeaway. Let me read a few things to you. Pass the first Arabic smoke. That's when the loop is the second era of these, the Boers know that enols like Wall Street finance, the third era, the small bets that temple, the fourth era of the smock, the hotel, the v. And that's like their city hall. I had some major part of bears. The fifth ever these, let me call it the Latin Quarter because that's where a lot of the students and Socrates, and that's where the soft bone in the universities, if you're into that BAD the left bank, I'm talking about fourth, fifth, sixth, always casually called the Latin Quarter us. A lot of students. First cities, parks is beautiful. If you're into that and I am, I love it, I love the vibe. Then you've got the seventh air of the smoke. That's where the Eiffel Tower it. And that eight era of the small, That's where this shop and they say is the right bank, money bank. The Gold Coast. Now you moved on to another name of it. That eight air of these small shop at a CEDAW up the tree all as all those Lewis acid, Todd's and Chanel's at Gucci is an Aramaic. Shops, shops, shops, shops, shops, the hotels, cost of barton, the palaces of air, is the place you got to see at least one tab. It's incredible. Then you got the night air of these limits for the opera, the big opera house is located. Then you've got the 10th, 11th, and 12th. Okay, now you're going to hear people saying the 10th, 11th, and 12th. The third thing, the porting the 50 to 60 to 70. What is that? These are areas that allow tourists never see. These are era d smalls with hotels with great prices, with beautiful streets, with gorgeous restaurants. That tourists sit there residential, true the vertebrae, That's the French word for true. The brain lesion. That's where they live. That's where you see the real deal. That's not in the guidebooks. Those air and these moles, then you have the 18th. You're going to hear about that last mile mark. That's accurate, core. That's that famous church, moma. That's where you got the Moulin Rouge. You've got all the artists hanging out and mart that 18 air obese, small to tourists notice 18 every bad and know that 18th that painters or Latin history, they canvases. Incredible. Okay, Then you've got the 19th and 20th air, the slide. Now you're on them. They have a term here, pair of feet. And then interesting, the perimeter, the pair of Paris. Now I'm sharing all this with you because yes, 20 air of these muscles. What are the main ones? The first through the 8th, that's where the tourists day. That's where the more expensive hotel. So that's where everything you want to see in Paris is pretty much who's the outlier? The 18th? That's Mark sacral cord. What's the in-between the up and coming neighborhoods of Paris? Are you going to see your value and your hotels? The 14th, the 11th. Ooh. That's like being with village. That's like that's like living in New York and you're just like, Oh, that creativity is there. That's where these new chefs are. Opening hotels, opening restaurants, opening cafes, Latin overcome the 14th, the 17th, over near the beautiful parks. These are sections in Paris. If you open up the gap books, the NSA and a whole lot of them. But I'm here to tell you, this is of course on budgets and traveling to Paris. Don't sleep on these up and coming neighborhoods. Yeah, to remember the crime in pairs. It's nothing like the crab in the rest of the world. I'm not going to say it's not existent. But even as a solo woman traveling to Paris and never fear for my life. I fear for my life a little bit more back and he died later when I'm living here in France and I'm in Paris, I don't feel that need, that kind of culture here where it's just violence on the regular. Some of that said, do your homework, know your error. The smallest know you and neighborhoods. Figure out where you want to stay. Left bang, right bank. What's your vibe? I'm going to tell you right now. Era these modules one through eight, that's where everybody stays. That 88 million people rolling through Paris every year. They're staying in those one through eight. You're going to be traveling all season. We're going to talk about that a little later too, because that's the Moneyball. Summertime is not the Dann the gum, the Paris. Hey, the triple for everything. Your room, your food. Yeah. Airfare or season. April, May, October, November, even September. That's the Moneyball. Even January, you don't want to have thrown out a few sweaters. It's raining a little bit. Everything costs less. So for all intensive purposes, we've talked about sections in Paris. Know the word Ara D small, That's simply neighborhoods. Last two digits of your zip code on your hotel that you're considering, it tells you where you're staying, right me. Anytime. If you need accommodations or you have questions and love, hear from my students. And I love helping people plan their getaways in, in Paris. Yeah, there's no extra P is associated with that. I'm just going to impart what I know to be true and I recommend to my son Adam lives in New York. My daughter Amanda and her husband who live in California, my friends in Washington. They write me all the time. I'm coming to Paris. What are you recommending? An S? And I'm whereas they tell us eight. And I'll do the same for you. See in the next lecture.
11. Paris · Left Bank · Right Bank · What's that?: Hey, So you've heard me throw that out there. Left bank, right? Yeah. Right. Okay. You can Google that and I get as much history as you need. We all got the internet at this point. So if you really need something really in depth and want to know in detail about those terms, what they really mean, you can do that. But for this course, I'm going to just tell you what it is. I'm going to read it to you. The right bank is most commonly associated with the river. See in the center of Paris. Here the river flows westwards, cutting the city into, hey, the right bank. The left bank. So the river scene created that terminology. Okay, the right bank is most famous for the shop. Ellie's say that they have exclusive street. We talked about shopping and has 14 era and the smells are located in the right bank. So of those 20 air in these months, 14 are in the right bank, and six are in the left bank. You that you already know more than most people. The right bank? Yes. If considered this and an avenue, they've got the plasmin don't, that's where the president's palaces located. You've got the avenue montage, all that crazy shop and an expensive stuff and and travel hacking took pairs. But I need you to know about the right bank because even if you stay in the left, you're going to want to visit the right. You get to see this place. They got bridges gilded and go, let me Paris as a handful. As I said earlier, if everything and more you ever thought a city would be, it's elegant, it's extravagant. I mean, yes, couples are everywhere. People are kissing everywhere, hand-holding, everywhere, eating, every shopping everywhere. It's incredible. So yeah, when you go back to your hotel, you want to call place to relax. Because digital and sensory overload. Every moment of the day this system feast to see, okay, right bank. What else we got. We got the loop museum that Lu De Monalisa that's located in the right bank. You got, we talked about the Arc de Triomphe. You've got the Tuileries gardens. And Okay. Now the right bank is definitely larger than the left bank. If it's holding how many air of these monks? 14 of the 20. It's a larger section of the city. It's vibrant. It's known for all its wealth. It's known for that VI, OK. Now, let's talk about left-brain. Left bank is on the other side of the river. The left bank is what they call them. Place, where all the artists lived in their early years. So you've got Colette, the writer. You've got Natalie Barney, you get sylvia beach, you get Edith Wharton. And you've got Pablo Picasso. Whenever they would come to Paris, they never stayed on the right thing. They would stay on the MF pink, which is why they call it the Latin Quarter, because that was the language that was spoken back then. This is where all the intellectuals like to sit in a cafes and written nags that they still smoke this Seeger bits and eat and drink and it's the same. I prefer to left bank. I prefer just because it just feels authentic for me. It feels like a throwback. I feel like I've walked into a painting by one of these artists. Think about it. Ernest Hemingway. I, setting cafes that Ernest Hemingway used to drink his coffee. F Scott Fitzgerald, James Baldwin. None of these riders with head to the right bank. They would leave that prove what they called the Bourgeoisie Paris. They were more than Bohemians of Paris. And that vibe still exists. So as you can see that it's a decision that you're gonna make. And no matter where you stay, transporter they easy. As matter of fact, some of the air these both a kidney to a left by air, at least my right bank, they're on edX circle there. If it's a literal, you could cross the street and you in the right bank and cross it back and you're in a lift back up when he does that. But that's how the city is set up. So as you can see, the bone that famous university in Paris, That's the left bank. Bookstores, galleries. Bank. Okay. So, you know, it's got six error the smells the right bank 14 and 11 bank six. My 7th Air do smoke. That's in the left bank. What else do I need? Hey, musicians, jazz lover, if you're to music, you're in a jazz, you in the literature, you don't want to stay on the left bank if you're in a shopping and just seeing what all that's about, you don't want to stay in the right thing. It's very simple, but you don't have to lock into either. If you're staying in Paris for a week, a limb, a little book three nights in the left bank, book, the reunites and direct bank. You come home noted with information visual, because now you've experienced both fields. Nobody says you have to stay in one hotel home, time you there. Nobody's know that at all. This is your trip planner the way you walk it. But know this, even if you stay in on them the entire time or the right, your local transport zigzags and cuts through ALL. And you literally can walk from one to the other. So it's not that serious, but it's up to you. So there you have it. Left bank, right bank. You can do a little bit more research on it if you wish. But otherwise, it's a vibe and the river is the dividing point. See you in the next lecture.
12. Paris · Accommodations and Star Ratings: Hey, that was fun, that thing, right thing. Era, these modes though I love it, but you're getting a sense now of the city. And now let's move to the big deal here. Where are you going to say? Let's talk about the combinations and those star ratings. So Paris as a hotel star system, and it's going to be posted outside of every hotel. It's the law. So even if you arrive with no hotel reservations in pairs, you will be able to walk pass a hotel and the sign will be out front. And it will say Paris, ones, twos, threes there. What's that? Or five-star? That's the law domain steak back. Now. Why do they do that? I don't know. But it sure is nice. As a tourist, as a visitor at somebody not familiar, which made us to be able to just say, oh, okay, this is a three-star hotel. This is a two-star hotel. The question is, why? What do they base their reading time? You didn't like your home country. Other stars created based on that. But let me read something to you. Okay. The criteria for the star rating in pairs is based on room size. Really interesting, size. There is a mandatory standard and size for each level. The stars are displayed on the hotel interests. Interests. And they are approximately 300 criteria that each hotel goes through in order to get their star rating. It's awarded to every hotel in the country of France. Every hotel. So you can't go wrong. Met hotels are re-evaluated once every five years. So keep that in mind to ensure the star rating is correct. All right. So onsite fitness center, they factor that in. Our their private terraces is breakfast being served. Their star ratings might be different than what we're accustomed to. In the United States. Don't k general level of service. They rate services. For me. Isn't that are vague and right to rate? That they do. Alright. One STI parents those tails now have never stay the ones down and I'm not going to recommend you do eat them. But since this is a course budgeting, I do have to at least review it. Okay? So if you're seeking and inexpensive accommodation in Paris, you're going to be tempted to take a look at a one-star hotel. These are your very base, base space-based baseline hotels. You're going to be small, 80 square feet. So that's 10. They're going to share a bathroom. That's a big thing. Your star system factors in. Is there a bathroom in your room? You know, what do you guys think? We don't question that. That's called a BnB bed and breakfast that you're mapping in the hallway. That's not gone. A hotel in France, it's called the hotel. If your bathroom is it all way it's built. Dell. So be aware of that. That star rating will let you know if your bathroom is in your group or in the hallway. Now if you're young, your leg and you're used to staying at these youth hostels and stuff, a one-star might be great for you. But know that that's a shared bathroom. You know, one-star normally. Okay. Now, they also do ratings based on the stack, speak more than one language. They get extra points. They speak French, of course they're embarrassed. English, Dutch, Spanish, Italian, and German. Japanese, Chinese, men. You know, so the star rating also, they evaluate the step. All right, location. How far is the hotel away from some of the main tourist attractions? There's an interesting thing in my country isn't a lot about location. You got a high-end zip Gu, you go challenge that a lot of money for the Hotel. Paris is not the same. You can have a high in zipcode. That release mode, which you a long way away from Apple down, your rating, go, Come down. Slow. I want you to be careful with the star rating, okay, two-star. So here we go. Not too many admitted ease as well. Minimum rooms size, pretty much the same as the one star. The lobbies are a little bit larger. The reception area. The code, the receptor and error though speak at least one more language, European language have about that. Not any news. The Europeans, they'd just, the breadth of the data goes up star ago the Franks is managed French and German. You get, okay, they're required to accept credit cards about that one star is not required. They can demand cash. I don't do. But a two-star, they can accept credit cards. Okay. They are required to have an elevator, one star, not required to start going to have an elevator. Three-star. Kinda chill and this my range three-star. Now you started to feel like you're back at home because this is your basic for region hotel with some upgrades, I like to seek out the small Parisian hotels who were once private homes. I'm always looking for the authentic experience. The three-star hotel in Paris gives me my authentic experience. I walk in there, the original floors, the original doors, the original ceilings. Oh my goodness. I feel like I'm in the pages of a novel, a gorgeous French film. Three-star is the sweet spot for hotels in Paris. For combinations. I assure you, 30 years out of 30 years, maybe. I creeped up and stayed in a force that our analysis goes. It was my 50th birthday. Now, okay. I stay in a three-star. The prices are comfortable. Rooms are beautiful, they're starving in Paris, it's small. Your hotel rooms at tiny, even in the five-stars, They don't get into all that square footage like we do in our home country in the United States. And maybe in your home country, they care more about the quality, the authenticity. What are they serving for breakfast, like you said, is there an elevator and does the staff speak multiple languages? Thank kind of thing. Three-star 17th 18th century boutique hotels. That's got Thomas Senior written all over it. I'm going to come to Paris. I don't want to stay in a hotel or mass. Me and my country. I want to stay in that experience and hotel with history. You might want the same. They're going to be very romantic. Three-star require that you have a bathroom in your room. So now it's on sweet, sweet about that. That's actually French for in your room. So I'm suite bathroom. The rooms are still tiny. Okay. But you got a little bit more square footage. Let's see. Three-star hotels are going to offer rooms, a variety of categories. How they come up with an atom. Now, they all look the same to me in terms of size. I don't really care about categories as long as they've got the original features, you know, all the linens are the same. I've got my inseam on suite bathroom. Unhappy. I'm going to highly recommend rubber stamp and endorse. You search for the three-star hotel. Since we're talking budgets and travel hacking. So those three star hotels in June, July, and August, especially I guess they might be to 300 year was Elaine maybe a 100% a year olds and nine that's like 2300 US dollars a night. I'll season I want this AT banana and this. Yeah. Well, if season travel those three star hotel, I feel like royalty. Sometimes I've paid as low as 65,009 and then I can stay bad night Good night. At night unless they about that. But at 70 bucks a night and it will stay five nights, they really enjoyed myself. So all seasons the way to go when it comes to this whole Taylor radius is that even the five-star palettes and tails discount in the off-season. So that's key. Alright, so three-star elevator as well for scar, now you're moving into the luxury that's considered a luxury hotel. More space, private reception areas, air conditioning is mandatory. How about that? It's not mandatory that star 1, 2, 3, you have air conditioning, so are you there in the summer anyway? Anyway? Yeah. It's a reality. I know we get spoiled and our own country, but air conditioning is not mandatory in hotels in Paris until you reach a certain star level. Alright, room service the guy every service, the staff will speak English mandatory. Yeah, about that for sound five down monitor is the English 123 not mandatory? They need to speak another language, bookkeeping, but it can be in a European language. Alright? If you forget to bring your adapters and adults four-star hotel there they are. They got those plots for you. Beverage choices, beautiful breakfast. Private drivers have about that. They keep Rolls-Royce is parked in front of the hotels. Do you need to go over to the little shopping on the right? You can just read it and walk out from jump in their roles. And they take you. It's that born five-star and dares. You're not gonna get that in a three-star and will be on the local bus. But that's about it well traveled on a budget. But if you're here, you're just taking this course to get a little extra information. That's different. You might wanna do the fourth stop with fast that what else? All right. Are some people that I have spots. I would like to hear about that. Maybe you do, but yeah, now I got stuck. What else? Swimming pools, as I said and now we're moving from for now, let's go on up to five star. Well, this song that's my son was saying is lit. You got that show for on your beck and Carnap, the main thing that beck and call those five stars years and that staying in regular hotels, this is Paris got, remember this city is thousands and thousands and thousands of years old. They have comfort it beautiful royal palaces into hotels. You are walking into a palace that kings and queens used to stay in your room. The ceilings are hot, the doors are high, the beds are huge, the floor, they're magnificent. All that marble. You might have a fireplace in your bedroom. You're going to have a balcony. But the main thing is the chef top top shifts are now downstairs in the kitchen. That's who's preparing your food every day. Eight hop per region shift. You can actually call and specify a dish and they were prepared for you in that crazy. But what always gets me the most visit and you can visit, sometimes I visit a five-star hotel because their restaurants are still open to the public. They cannot bribe it. I go over and have a bowl of $40 soup. Because Avalon, and just feel that luxury. I enjoy seeing the Rolls Royce lagged out, waiting for people to descend from their rooms and enter and go, do their shopping, whatever it is they do. You're going to see a variety across section of cultures, staying in a five-star hotels, palace festivals, and Paris. It's shocking. Sometimes when you see cultures with entire families walking through the lobby, 30 people strong and they've got, you know, 30 Rolls-Royce Islam that for each family member. Yeah. Yes. See that? Crazy. But it's real. So that's the mail at the stars, this though, 12345. And they do some special categories to again, now you're going from just the pounds and now you're going to Schadt toes, chateaus. And at 1000 square foot shack tubes. Now they're changing the readings and actually lip up a little bit and you get 789 and 10 stones in PAN-OS, a central. You're just going to be at the palace hotels. Once you leave the city center and you stay out in the sun bird chateau country, the RWA? Yes. The ratings change. Do you think a chateau have an elevator? No. Do you think that people at the Chateau speaks multiple languages? Yes. You think they're private or hybrid? Yes. Do you think there's shifts? Yes. But for all intents and purposes of this course, I'm going to tell you about traveling budget for this. Your first time, you next time, whatever. You don't have to go off on your accommodations. It's just going to eat joke budget a lot. Three-star and gets you really need to be even the two-star. Then you can relax, put your money where you want it to be, and plan your time in Paris. And if you just need to take a peek at some of these palace hotels, go and have lunch. Budget one day from lunch. Make sure you budget a 100 hours. Okay. If that's a separate budget, make sure you budget well, because that's what they're charging for that experience, but they own they don't buried argument. You can sit there for three or four hours. Nothing about Paris. Once you take your seat, it's almost like you batch of seat. In this city where this is small cafe or grand restaurant, the waiters don't come over there and try to make you move or, Oh, you got to go. You've been here for an hour to know it's like you paid for your seat. When I first experienced that, I couldn't believe it. It's like I can say that for three hours and nobody says anything and all I have, what's a salad? Yeah. That's the culture here. They love. They love to sit for 23 and 400 hours and eight. So once you take your seat, know that you're going to be there for WOW, for as long as you like. That's it for the star system. See in the next lecture.
13. Paris · Restaurants · Bistro · Brasserie · What's The Difference?: Hey, let's move on to monogenic has a saying. Alright, so yeah, restaurant BCE through bra, sorry, you're going to see all these names. What's a bass drum? What's a bra? Sorry, what's a restaurant? What's the cafe? When I first started traveling and I was like, What is wrong? A difference. Bass, drum, think casual, a base drill. They going to be served all day long. Think 24 hours. The mass of B strep Bistro has casual to the menu is going to be casual is going to come all the classic French dishes. The price is going to be comfortable. What else did I write? Their intimate, they usually family owned. Again, traditional Parisian, french, fair, The Price is Right, put BCE drew on your list as you're creating your food budget, okay, for your trip to Paris. A Boucher Kou, what is a bushel? Okay. A blue shell. And those are different. Normally, those specialty types of B-cells, you're going to definitely do regional regional day. Okay. They're independent. Again, casual, highly decorated. They serve just hide fat items. I stay away from the bush alone. Just the word alone. Think about Bu Xiang. Sound like you go grow, just eaten there. But that's pretty much it. It's excessive. But you're going to see it. We show and that's that hard eating. So if you enter that, go for it, be stroke, casual family prices, right? Me, bushel, decadent know, Boulogne injury, What's that? That's a place to cell spread. That's where you're going to grab your bread some days you're not going to eat at a restaurant. I highly recommend you eat at a restaurant every day. We're on a budget, remember? So you're gonna go to the blue lingerie and you're going to buy your baguette. Are you going to buy a loaf of bread? And then you're going to stop at different places and grab your cheese and you tomatoes and you're going to sit in the park and I think you don't need to spend $20.30 dollars and lunch. We even have lunch for $3. Okay. And you can eat like that every day. I recommended by your lunch. Sometimes I get so tired of eating in Paris. I mean, you're getting bleed saying that. But it's true from Rich. You sit there a long time. So time I just get exhausted. I buy my lingerie, I buy my cheese, and whenever I want to eat my whatever salad at one, and I go back to my room and we'll picnic watching CNN. And the TV goes now upstarts, they grow old English. I turned to the French channels and I practice my French. So you're going to be doing the same thing. You're on a budget. You find that for that day and budgets around little thin, comfortable lingerie by other grid and then put them together salad for dinner. Alright, BrO3, what's a glossary? A beast row but a grass three. That's like a pub. Okay, So you got Pub Food, hearty foods. Again, here's the beauty of Paris. The menus are outside. Before you even walk in. Take your seat and asked for a menu. You can look at enough that the dorm beautiful. So you don't have to install that waiter. You go in and sit down, you open a menu. Oh, I don't think this is going to be for me or all the prices in that Good, You're looking at the prices for you enter the restaurant. And I said every row, every bras, every, every beast room prices are posted out of that menu is posted outside. Now they're going to have a board where they're going to have specialties for that day. And there's a waiter will tell you about those. But the general menu, it's going to be right there, posted. You don't know how much you're spending before you enter. And some of the places that prices will have little tip already built in. And some of the places that tip is not built-in. Got to tell you that that's been a few years tip in and didn't realize the tip was already in the price. So they've double-dip on me. Just a note for you. Watch that and you get your check, see if the tip is already in there. If it's not, then you can feel free to leave a few coins. If it is, you can feel free to skip it in that field at It's already baked in a cafe. The cafe is where you go and just get your coffee. You sit and drinking coffee and hot tank, a team. Patisserie, what does T3 Pastry, but TSV paste three as one of my favorite places. That's where you get your croissant. I mean, I've been known to walk over to a patisserie, Microsoft, and then walk to a cafe and buy my coffee and nibble Microsoft with my coffee. That's not something that's not allowed. People do it all the time in Paris. They got their favorite patisserie and they've got their favorite cafe for coffee. Beautiful. And you could sit again. You can sit in that table outside watching the world go by in a cafe. And the waiter never bothers you until you ask me a bill. You sit there for hours on end. It's amazing. So that's all I have for you. Be strong. Stick with Bistro and glossary. The Busan, it's a bit much the patisserie for your pastries? Yes. The blue lingerie for your brand? Yes. Then you're going to have your regular regular regular restaurants in pairs. And again, menu and prices out front. So you're never and these are the restaurants. Restaurants and you'll see restaurant. So you know the price is higher so that you see the words restaurant on one of those awnings and Paris. And you can just pretty much assume the price just double. When you see the word or SRE, you know, you're comfortable. When you see the word beach stroke, you're going to be comfortable. Cafe, you're going to be comfortable, do lingerie. But T3, cope double. But soon as you see restaurant, check the flag. That's it. See you next lecture.
14. Paris · Art Galleries · Museums: I saw Messina and I hope you're enjoying this course. I mean, I can talk about Paris all day long and you're gonna have a flaw. I assure you, you're going to be moving back again and again and again. And one day you're going to be that expert because you're going to have your favorite places, even know exactly where it is. You want to be, where it is, you want to eat and how much is going. Gasb has been done there. I'm slipping. And a little category here called Paris art galleries and museums at this kind of awkward spot in the course. Only because, I mean, they go hand in hand. I either visit our gallery and afterwards I E, or I have an eight and afterwards vivid our gallery or museum. And just know everybody. That's, that's the move. I mean, it's a city that devours the pleasure, the visual pleasures, the sensory pleasures. And you can see the parks, you can see the museums, you can see the gardens, people strolling. So I just wanted to throw that into you. I mean, there are approximately a 130 museums in Paris. A 130. So take and over the course of the EU's visiting him, but they got a few major ones. You've got the Centre Pompidou and these you can now just Google museums in Paris. You don't need me to tell you about that because everybody's got different interests. Some people care about sculptures. So that's the Musee d'Orsay, Rodin, the Rodin Museum. Some people care about impressionistic painting. Obviously going to check out, they'll lose. Some people care about Cuban ism. And then you'll check out the Musee d'Orsay. Some people care about the foundation for Louis Vuitton and that's one of the museum. The end you've got another especially museum honoring the kings of French history. There's a lot. So you are going to want to take your time. Devour the culture, devour the language, devour the food, devour the cheese. And that's the perfect day. Waking up in the morning, spinning and mourning in a cafe, looking to a journal or magazine or just watching the people go by. And the planning and moment to walk to one of the left bank or right bank museums or art galleries. Yeah, I have a ball and absolute ball. Let's see. What else did I want to say? Yeah, you've got constantly is dm, you've got that. You've got the grand palace. Ooh, that's where they hold those beautiful you do Fashion Week in Paris. That's where Chanel likes the whole, there were roughly events at the grand ballet, so that's pretty impressive. We all know the lives, we all know the Musee d'Orsay, you got a lot of small museums there. The orange R3. As I said uneasy Rodin, you know, the thinker, the sculpt to the thinker. That's embarrass. First time I saw that I thought it was a fake. Those are grayed out was what? That looks like the thinker. And the guy was like, It is the thinker. I grew up my whole life. Famous sculpture and I'm standing in front of this original piece was growing. So we all start somewhere. And now when I visit a thing, wow, what are the odds of a chick like me growing up in upstate New York? Now, I can come and sit and reflect and see something as magnificent as a sculpture like this, walk in front of the Buddha Lisa. The first time I visited the loop, my son, who he was six years old. Let me move this 30s now. And I saw Mona Lisa. I thought a Mona Lisa before they enclosed in a glass. I've got a picture of my son is six years old, standing and promote the Mona Lisa. And now because so many people to pitch to them only, and they cross over the beautiful red velvet rope. They haven't closed the Mona Lisa and glass and the loop. So if you take a picture of it, you're not destroying the paint on the canvas anymore, but guess what? You get that reflection now, bouncing off photo of the Mona Lisa. And I think to myself, Oh thank goodness. I have this picture of my little boy standing literally next to the original canvas. This just a little sidebar. Anyway. Well to the next lecture. And enjoy your coffee. Enjoy your cafe in Julia croissant. Enjoy your art gallery. In ECM. Write me if you need the specific recommendations. As I said, they've got over a 130 in the city. You're gonna hit the big boys first that the BC DR. Say after that, you can cover some of the special ones. Okay. See you next class.
15. Paris · Rail ·Train (Gare) Stations: Hi, okay, let's keep moving here. This really doesn't apply to you per se because you are staying right in Paris city center. But I wanted to make you aware of the fact that there are proof seven major train stations in Paris. And these train stations, if you have the time and you want to leave the city.
16. Paris · Metro System: Hey, we're talking Transport, inter city transport. So we've already talked about the taxing. Now let's talk a little bit about that Metro again. We talked about the RER be that regional train and bronchi from the airport into the city center. But now I'm talking about the natural law, the actual next row in the city of Paris. And it is phenomenal if you're into traveling undergrad. Okay? It is phenomenal. Let me read you some stats here. Okay. The Paris Metro is a symbol of the sea. The Paris Metro stops. It's like you're visiting a museum. Wait till you see the artwork alone. That's in the Paris Metro stops. Just unbelievable. It is the second busiest metro system in Euro, only after Moscow, The into Russia. Okay? So you can imagine 240 fast stations, thick kilometers. That's 34 square mass in the C, F a lot. Remember Matt telogen, the architect of pairs, how he built the local transport. The commuter rails are positioned 800 meters apart. So you will always near a metro stopped in pairs, if anything. Now, the system has poor accessibility for anybody with mobility issues. And the United States, you know, which require elevators and escalators, wheelchair access, just so you know, those concepts mean nothing here. There are no elevators and all of the Mitchell stops. And then so factor that in, okay, 1.5 billion passengers every year. They lead to people use the metrics. The Mexico's maps are in numbers and colors, very easy to read. Even a six-year-old can read the Paris Metro. Shocking news. Ticket prices low and you can buy on books, you can buy individually. Beautiful. Okay, How to Read the metro? So the system has a total of 16 different lines based on numbers and colors. On the Paris metro in the city center, you always going to read that last dot. That's going to tell you the direction it's going in. Like a lot of metro systems, the last stop. So when you look at your numbers in your colors on your metro map and you know you're going in one direction, look at the final stop of that direction, and that will tell you the direction you need to go into fine years now. Okay, easy. Let's see. So let's see endpoints we talked about that. That's important to know because I don't think the direction of the Paris Metro go in one direction. If you blow it, they gotta get collab up, jump back out and get on the other side of the tracks. So be aware of the direction you're traveling in. But you know, hey, Nathans in granite, you make a mistake, you make a mistake. Try to be as relaxed, as flexible as you can revisit barriers because you're gonna have a much better time. Laugh at your mistakes. It's not like you're rushing to get to an appointment. If you their own business, you should probably think the adult business that you've gotta get where you go and you don't know where you go. But the Metro Studio will get you click into your appointment. So what do you understand? Your direction is that direction, but the end, the line hours operation Monday through Friday and sending 530 in the morning to 1240 at night? 1240 in the morning. Okay. Different schedule on holidays clearly. But you can find those out once you arrive. Just know that the metro is open seven days a week. All right. Don't get stuck kitchen the last train. Sometimes they cancel, doesn't last. If I sound like I'm speaking from a voice of experience, but remember it is never catch those last determining. Always gets the second to the last third lab of little f. If you're out, don't count on that layer string. I don't understand what that is. We practice but sometimes they just stop word and they like a retired go home. How do you operate like this? It's done. Now. I want you to be aware of that. Okay. Certain metro lines are open all my unknown for new year's, Christmas, the season's okay. And learning. Only certain Paris metro lines. We talked about this, we'll have, we'll share assessable. It is not a law in France that it's fair for everybody. So know that. Okay. Note that when you get on the Metro lab, there are seats earmarked for pregnant women, people and, you know, handicap, don't sit in those seats. The metro train police will come by and write you a ticket and you gotta pay it on the spot. Sometime it's a €100, that's a 100 and some dollars, sometimes it's 200 and don't sit in the seats designated for the o the cane. They got the photos, therefore, you don't sit in those seats, please. The Metro Police sometime be playing code, even playing. And he shows up and he's got that little box. And he stayed there and give you that ticket and you got to take that cash out of your pocket or give him that credit card and pay that ticket on. Thus, there is no We need to go to court and we need to dispute that. There is no dispute. You will pay or be arrested. Don't sit in that seat for the elderly and it's marked. Okay. Where can you buy your metro tickets? Pretty much anywhere you combine them at the store is called the tobacco. You can buy them at every RAM metro rail station, you combine method newsstand where you'd have your newspapers. You can buy your tickets anywhere, okay. When you board your train, there's this thing called validation. Make sure your ticket is validated, it stamped for when you get on there. If a police stop you and other random check which they did and you didn't validate your ticket. Here's another on the spot. The, you're going to have to pay this fun stuff. I've learned over the last 30, lousy, honestly dabs, and I was not happy. And then I didn't speak the language rule well, so I couldn't even try to talk my way out of because I didn't speak French and I couldn't grab our way out of it because I won't be late. So I to just pay had to pay. I mean, I could have plead it. Well, I'm an American. I'm on vacation in okay. Put that error by little vacation and bears. Don't break the rules, please. Okay. Metro passes. Yeah. They got bath is for the month, passes for the week, fast as for the date, passes for the year. Do your research itself a pass to mirror. Hello, and you're going to be there. Okay. And I even got the unlimited paths which duplicates between the metro museums, bus training. They got all kind of passes there. So do your research on there. Okay. And that's all going to sound the Metro. It is a fabulous way to travel and France, I mean, in Paris and in France they don't have met Charles obviously, but in Paris, yes, Try and in other parts of France, they had the local systems, breccia, pretty much the same but the passes. But in Paris, Paris center is easy as Pat, to get around on the metro. Lot of walking. If you're not so good, yeah, obligatory skills and have some good. The skills are a little off. The metro is going to be tough. Tons and tons and tons and tons of stairs. Know that. Tons of stairs down across. Do I felt like somebody like the Metro. Metro but it's not Yeah, I just don't like all that underground and then all those stairs limits dark, and then the train is coming. I gotta make sure I'm going in the right direction and I'm going to make sure that the end of a lad and I don't know, I just want to relax. I've always been this way. So there you go. Write me if you have any other questions and let's go on to the next transport section.
17. Paris · RER A · RER B · RER C · RER D · RER E · Rail System: So we just covered the Paris city center metro and know that this metro, it crisscrosses across all 20, what era, the smokes or neighborhoods. So whether you're staying on the left bank of the river or the right bank of the river. The metro crisscrosses all of them, so you can get all of them. Now, for this lecture, I want to talk about something else. It's not call them metro. It's actually called the bar e, r, actually a commuter train. And it crisscrosses the city. This is that train you can catch to the airport, you can add, catch a Paris metro him to the airport. You have to take the R, The R number B. Now the RER, they have an RA or a, RER, RER, RER, RER E. You get people who are commuting. And these commuter trains bring people from outside the suburbs into pair center and take them back home in the evening app to work as a visitor to the city. Access to this too. As a matter of fact, sometimes when you buy the right path, you can use the Metro pass on the RER as well. Those are separate things. Metro RER not the same. I was confused for many years. I stayed away from the RER and I didn't really understand it. And it doesn't stop at every metro stop. It skips whole vacuums of stops. So I would get only RER I'd see the sign on the train and he goes zoom in right past my snap. Oh no, it's on the metro line, but it's a Ari the commuter train. I gave up. I'm done. Every now and then I'll catch the RER to the airport and back. That's it. But I couldn't I didn't understand. I had to take the RER to 1 on the metro, get off change or catch the Metro to the REF get off change. I'm on holiday. I'm not trying to do all that. I wanted to make you aware because you're going to see signs that say R, E, a, B, C, D. Okay? So these again are just commuter trains. They will surprise you if you try to figure them out. You will miss your stop. Hey, if you've got the time, hop on one radical on one end to the other, mass through it, hop on to NAICS, would add it on it, master it could be a Young and this is what you want to do. It one of the trains take into first side. You can't catch the metro to visit the Palace of Versailles. You have the kits, the RER. Why? Because the palace of the first side lies in a suburb of Paris. Same if you want to visit Giverny, you can catch the regular training. You can try to put together the RER schedule. Vocational metro. To give me. The Metro is Paris city center. The 20 era, the smells, the RER now encompasses the 20 arrow, these mass, but also the suburbs of Paris.
18. Paris · Local Bus System: We're continuing with local transport in pairs. So we've talked about the detrital, we've talked about the areola suburban trains now run my favorite topic. What do you think that is? Okay. Just say, well, I'm a fan of the bus. You already know one. It's above ground and got daylight. I can see all those beautiful Paris apartments streaming Beth be the bus stops. I got time to sit back and daydream while they wait for the people to come on. The bus is cheap, it's 1.9 year olds, so that's about two books. You can buy a pass for the week. I love it. The stops are just a few meters apart. It's everything. And when I first started visiting Paris, Do you know I used to pay 75 hours to take the tour of the city. I was a real tours. And when I took my mother for her 70th birthday and I was like, Oh, we get to see the city. I had not mastered the bus system in Paris, so I've paid for her pay for me how to fit it. Allen's later the bus, the two-story Decker thing, we would sit and Hal around steady. We would get off and get back on. That's good. One tab. Maybe. Now that I've noticed bus system, I don't recommend that double decker that nobody, none of my family then on my France, nobody becomes, you know what? But 1.90 for two months. The bus is go past the saying dog Don torus places that the two-story trial I for all those paths back. It's crazy. But I didn't know any better. Now I do. Let's talk about this. Remember, you can buy a pass for the metro, RER and the bus, or just a separate paths for each one, That's 168 bus lands throughout the Paris city center. You can go anywhere. You want to go on this bus lab, okay? If you are have mobility issues, disabled and elderly traveler, the bus convenient better options can guess what they got that lift. The metro 0 stairs. No, elevate it. The bus they're gonna bring then lift up there for you. So another reason is good. If you're traveling with family members, it's got mobility issues. The bus is just going to be better for them. Okay. Alright. So both stops are all over the city. I'm checking my notes because I get way too excited when I see you. Again, the bus is a marked like the trains. The final destination is what's sitting at the top of the bus. So in-between all of those stops, but in order for you to know your direction, know your end game. So I really know your, you know, your direction. You go, which way you don't need to go north, south, east, west. If you know your end game, you know which direction then bus is going in. How simple is that? Okay. All of the Paris buses are marked by double numbers, double numbers in that little tip, and they end up in the lab. You can use your pants metro tickets on the bus. Okay. Alright. Transfers? Yes. Alone. You can transfer 90 minutes. It's almost 20 amps. So you can get on the bus, do what you gotta do and use, save it and come back if you can do it in any minute. Now come up. Now we only talking about a book each way. Forget about Lyft, Uber, out of business, taxes, a buck and you can go anywhere in those 20 air, the smallest there and a buck back. And even if you don't make the 90 minute time frame for the transfer, still only a $1.994 bucks, 40 bucks round-trip. Okay. Began made my point. Now, let me give you some examples and hadn't noticed before. But 68. Get on the bus. 68. The stops are the Musee d'Orsay, Saint-Germain Dupree, which are all these beautiful cafe, the loon, the opera. That's right in front. But 28 goes along the shop, LSA, the right bank. The Ecole military and the military academy, the assembly national goes along the Seine river. Bus 28, but 96 F map bus. It goes through past the hotel, the view that the city hall. It goes towards the medieval village of the Mariah, that section in Paris. That absolutely gorgeous. It goes up the shot. Ellie say bus 1906, write this down. Bus not as thick as the tour bus. Okay. But 68. The tour bus for two bucks, you know, you had to get off the rat and Arieti of bed and get off Baidu out and get back on. If you stay 90 minutes, it's free. It back all with the same ticket, but 69. And make a note here it says it's popular with the American tourists because it passes everything. The PLS, Shas, the cemetery, the famous submit, the bus to use the loo, the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame. But 60 man is the American bus. Bus 42 takes you to Gallery Lafayette. You go shopping and takes you up the shop. Ellie's saying, come on. But 80 takes you up to mark soccer coordinate. Big beautiful sacred art temple up there, that church, that beautiful artist colony. But 86, oh my goodness. Takes you to Notre Dame, takes you along the scene river. But 70 to pass the Eiffel Tower past the Tuileries, that beautiful garden where you can go in and pick me up. You stop at your blue lingerie for your bread. Plus 30. That stops at all those training stations which we're gonna talk about next. The god and known. We gotta eat where you catch trees and go. The other parts of Europe and France, Bus 20 to again Eiffel Tower, the opera. It goes under the Arc de Triomphe. Okay. Now the buses, the ticket, whether you like it or that, I'm going to recommend you at least try it one time. Let's go through that again. They leave in 15 minute intervals and guess what's cool? There's this app called are a TP rapid transit for pairs. I got the app on my phone. You enter in where you are, type in the address of your hotel. Type in Where do you wanna go? And then hit results. It tells you which bus to take where to walk the number of steps to the closest bus station. It tells you all the stops. Now the buses run quick every 15 minutes or so, so you don't even worry about that. Also, some of the bus stops, they actually list the stops at the bus stops pairs is on the ball. So you know, oh, and one minute is buses arrive in five minutes. This bus will be here. Yeah. Tammy and running grab a coffee, come back in 17 minutes. The bus would be around and come on. Don't have it like that, but Paris does. So it makes it very easy for you to become a depth. I waited too long. Don't wait that long to get to know the blast. Again for two bucks, you can crisscross the city. And that's the way to go. Download the app when you get there before you leave are a TP, just type in Paris are ATP and download the app. And it has all the bus stops, the lines, the colors, everything you to start studying before you leave on the, See you in the next lecture.

And then they renovated. It. Just will let you know there was a triumph. It runs T1, T2, T3, T4, T5, T6, T7, d eight, That's it. T1, t0. You could write it using the regular metro ticket and passes. It's a nice way to see the CD from the ground up. No metro know is as fluid added, the bus is not. But it is a leisurely thing that tram usually does not serve. The city's most sought after trans, tourist attraction because it was originally put in place for the locals back in the 19th century. But it's a nice tree. You can hold on I the trail off through the city. If you got the time and you know, you gotta legally moment, it's fun to do. That's all I want to say is the other triangle in Paris. It's like in San Francisco, there was a triumph. So eyed people don't know that. But yeah, they got a beautiful little Shyam. It is for me is truly for sport. It stops nowhere, then I wouldn't be fine if I got none of them. Do. I grab my coffee? It's sit there and just stay in the sunshine and that magnificent architecture. The tram is a wonderful tours thing to do. That's about it. See you next lecture.
20. Paris · Funicular: More transport. But again, just like that, try damn. The funicular. Okay, they have a phonemic killer. Wow. So 19 hundreds. They've had this thing and you're not going to be able to bad it unless you go to Mark, which is in the 18th Era BCE model. Okay? Now this funicular, they call it the mark perpendicular. Okay. Miss it once you get there. Okay. Carries you up and you allow steps when you get to the 16th is 616 of psi. The 18th, 18th is on a hill. So marts sector core, that's on a high hill in Paris. So some people will all, they've taken all the steps of its thousands of them. It seems other people grab the funicular at the bottom. It's no change to the top of March. Again, something fun to do. Funicular does not take you all over the city, but it is a beautiful aerial view as you writing a funicular. So what do I need to say? Climbs 350 four beat, carries 2 million people a year. It's in the 18th. All right, The smoke last two digits of the Paris zip code, 18. So it allows you to skip all those steps going up to the SEC or core, the perpendicular. Excuse me. It is operated by the same functioning that operates the metro bus that are a TP, which is the Paris Regional Transit Authority. Okay? So buying the tickets are easy. It's nice. Mobility impaired, and you want to see Mozart and you can't get up all those stairs. It's a perfect place to take someone that has difficulty walking and they still can see that view. See the SEC record fee, that beautiful place detect with all of the artists and painters in the Canvas. It's beautiful and have lunch. Also. Now you've got meters. Remember from the airport to the Paris center, city center, the taxi was a flat rate depending on whether you're going to the left bank or the right thing. Now you're in the city center. The taxi Perri zn has a meter, so it's clear how much you're going to pay. That's key. Apparently scams are very common in pairs. Taxi scams. So I really just want to, I don't want to beat it to that, but I just want to put this out to you that make sure that taxi has that registered dedicated taxi per region sign on there. But short fairs, very short bares, even though there's going to be a place where you can use your card, your debit card, or your credit card of paper you pick, they prefer or French or something. They'd prefer cash for short distances. So if you know, you're just going to hop from a to b, beta man or a woman cash. Okay. That's just a nice dusty nicety isn't required. No. But I'm telling you what works and what makes your experience in Paris are really terrific experience. Okay, for longer journeys across town, Airport jack and for Visa, MasterCard accepted. Forget about American Express. Okay. Just begin it back. All right. It is unusual for caps doing it which axes to accept American Express and travels Jake, just unusual, so does lead us that we hope you'll come into barriers. Mastercard, Visa, global, cache, euros, alright. Ask the driver B. You will get in the taxi. What is far more bombs of pavements are. Now sounds simple, but in France, latest thing, what are your forms? Do hop in that taxi, not known. And then when you get to your destination, you I haven't yet. You're going to hear all kinds of French. The French don't be going, alright. Do not hesitate to give you a taxi driver. The root you prefer. It hasn't different in New York. Try give it a new York to actually do out what the root you prefer to get reviewed a house that wherever you go into your report, but you won't be the last of it. In Paris. They actually embrace you saying, I would prefer to take this route at this time of day or I would prefer to take this route to the museum. They got no problem with it. So that's a cultural thing. I want you to be aware of. What else. So it's not unusual for your taxi driver to have a minimal amount of English. The hotels are different. Normally you have somebody at that front desk who speaks English, but be prepared for your taxi driver not to speak English. Just be Burberry. If they speak it, it's a bonus. But if they don't be prepared with your language translation app or your own basic French. Or even better. You teres written down. That's the best, then you can just give them a piece of paper. They know exactly where to take you. Okay. Loading a GPS map on your digital device, like Google Maps, put in where you're going and then show that to the taxi driver. That's acceptable in pairs. And that's acceptable into your GPS. You are where you go and you know where you wanna go and you showed it to the taxi, he'll make a note and that's why. All right. At rush hour and peak tourist season, the traffic is going to be heading. So just know that you remember this course is about traveling on a budget, some hex, well, even be there in June, July, and August outlet. So you don't have to worry about this. But just know that even though it's not tourist season, you still going to have the peaks people go and work heavy traffic. That's going to be the worst time to get into a metered taxi, just like anywhere in the world. Okay. So that's all happening. Even you on taxi's just dirt, plan your day in time. If you've got a disability or you have limited mobility, make sure you factor that in. Okay. Make a note of that and your hotel can call Are you a taxi that can accommodate a mobility issue? Alright. See you in the next lecture.

If you're not careful, stay away from rush hour. You're on vacation, you're on holiday. You can go any other time. You don't need to be on public transportation with people trying to get to work. All right. Metro lines 1, 2, 4, 11, 12, and 13 are generally the most overcrowded rush hour or not. Metro lines 1, 2, 4, 11, 12 and 13 don't matter at a time a day. They are jam back. Okay. Rer here we go in and you know what I did to impact. It's a commuter train. So how would you jump on the RER during rush hour, right? Bus lines thirty eight, sixty eight. Twenty eight and sixty two. They're the most cramped, but they also the ones the city center. Thirty eight. Twenty eight, sixty eight, and number 62. Well, so I want to tell you, okay. There are two metro lines that are all above ground. How about that? They're not underground. Metro line 2 and metro lines six. And we're the only two metro lines that are above ground for at least 90 percent of the way. Everything else is on the ground and they offer views. You won't believe write that down. Metro lines six and metro line two. Views are beautiful. It's just a little metro ticket. Metro lines six goes past the Eiffel Tower. 0. Beautiful. It's an elevated platform, is like crossing a bridge, is breathtaking. And the Eiffel Tower was like right on top of you, on Metro lines six is right on top of you, is beautiful. Okay. Then put a load no DEA learned arrived the RER when it makes sense to you, again, the RER, if you go into Disneyland Paris, RER, versailles, got to take the RER. So I mean, for SIADH Disneyland, I don't know the precise beautiful. I'm going to recommend you learn and take the RER from Paris to precise because you've gotta see that palace. Then doing the 50 with some that Marie-Antoinette, you should see how they lived. And the fact that when you get to Versailles and notice, even if they're in school, I didn't really study this. I didn't know that he built verse that. And he was so strung out. He built the petite verse that she had our own pan right next to his. And when you go through and you tour for sac, you see the bits. I forget how short these Frenchmen word. So to bed and like as a bid for a baby. At the Hall of Mirrors. The Hall of Mirrors is just mind-bending you talking about a 107 Shen that leaders, that one is long, long. So yes. On that note, you've got a hot the RER to get to resign, but it can make a day of it could have. You could do the palace tour and then come back to the city. Piece of cake. Okay, taxes we've already talked about. Stay away from rush hour, only go to the designated taxi per region, designated taxes. We talked about that. And then when all else fails, walk, pull out that Google Map. You got it. Put in where you are, where you want to go. And stop, walk, and sometimes it's even quicker and you certainly go and see more. We're going to pass shops and pass restaurants. Middle notes, I'm going to come back here and come back there. You're going to see more. So that's all I wanted to add on final tips that then for transport, but it's a big deal when you're in pairs, transports a big deal. And as you're putting together your budget for your travel, that's one of the hacks where you can save you and here's where you're going to cut your money. You're going to transportation. The eating. We talked about the different options for eating. And then they are on force the summary. And we talked just a little bit more about getting those great airfares, that shadow. So your money eaters, they transportation, if food, I mean your entertainment, entertainment, this is just the city going by you, you don't need any entertain a lot of museums are free, especially on Sundays. So in terms of a budget for entertainment, Paris is the entertainment unit would be spinning a lot actually met. And if you'd like to shop, that's different, that's not part of your travel budget. That's part of your owl want this budget? So that's all I do is like me, when I traveled bears, I'd never buy clothes. I come back with a suitcase, deal with all these herbs and TAESE and copy that cook wears. And I found the beautiful store where Julia Child used to buy her copper wire for preparing or her. That's me, most of the cases bill with cookware from France to go they steal a hand, hammer that copper and asked the best cookware in the world 30 years and I will go back and forth. That has been percent would you back pulls you back? We're kinda closer. You get I had nothing I had to close that I left with saying ones I'm not bet. But my suitcase was filled with cooking utensils, copper where oh my goodness, beautiful fabrics, everything that I couldn't get it at home. It's in it's in case. So S is the sidebar. There you go. See you next lecture.
24. Paris · Euro Currency Exchange: As Thomas seen out back with my notes. And I'm looping back a little bit on the currency thing. So when we talked about the airport, we talked about the checklist first. We talked about the checklist. We talk about transferring a little bit of those currency, your home currency, in my case, the US dollar, into your roles before you leave, arrived with a hundred, two hundred euros. That way you're good to go and you hit the ground. And then you're going to use your credit cards and debit cards after that because you're going to get the better exchange rate when you take your money out of the bed. Okay, that said, there are currency exchange places all through Paris. You gotta remember, I guess 50, 88 million people every year roll through this town. So there's going to be easy access to all different kind of cambium. They call them. You'll see them all over the city exchange currency exchange, currency exchange. What I want, I'll leave you with that. Okay? Information. Banks and Paris are generally open from nine to five. You will go the traditional route. Outside of Paris. They have a tendency to close around noon ish and then open up again at two o'clock. Some banks and bears are open on the weekends and the largest cities closer in tourist areas, yes. The exchange rates on currencies are always posted out front. So you will know what you're going to get for your US dollar. When you change €2, the exchange rate is going to vary from place to place. So if you're rushing to which change, you arrived in France with cash, US dollar. Now you've gotta go to the currency everyday in exchange, you're going to have a different rate every day. Just know that some days you'll get a better rates and days not so good, and then you're going to pay that fee to, okay. Atms tend to offer the lowest fees and exchange rates for currency in Paris. That's why I recommend you bring two credit cards to credit cards and one debit. One credit card and debit. But then we have two of something in your wallet. Use your debit card to take out cash or your credit card to take out cash. They would exchange rate is a little bit. Do you have to pay a B? That will depend on your bank. There are banks in the US were way international transaction fees. Find out before you leave Aster Bang Tao going to Paris, when I withdraw money, do you wave international transaction fees? That's a question you want to ask. Some people don't ask and then they don't get it. You know, that might be something your banker, you have financial center manager, they can hit a button, set your GAN up so that every time you take money out and parents, you're not charged with that transaction fee. I used to be in baking for many years. I know there are clients of mine. I did all kinds of things for you. They needed me to do this great like great relationship. But the bank, I can try to set their account up so that it mirrors their lifestyle. You may have the same relationship, but your bank, talk to your banker. It's okay. If your personal bank as ATM location is in Paris, try to withdraw from that. You know, banking is mobile now, you may bank with a bank that hasn't branch in Paris. Okay? Traveling with the bank art again, is the absolute best way to withdraw cash during your stay in Paris. Also, it eliminates the possibility of losing your money. You'll have a little bit of cash. That doesn't ruin a trip, okay? Expect to pay a higher commission rate when you exchange a small amount of cash and a lower commission rate when you exchange a big chunk of cash. Just know that, okay? Currency exchange rates at banks versus exchange kiosks. That's different. When you walk into a bank, you pay one exchange rates. When you walk into one of those currency exchange places on the street, you're going to play another, think you're getting the picture here. Okay. Paris is a plastic friendly city. I'm still pretty pave also sounds contact. That means without contact, they got that chip thing going on here, that Apple Watch. My sounds, got me swipe and they had all my money on my risk. I don't I bought a car. That's something I never have to touch the money. Sands contact. That's a term you're going to want to know. Contact, which means you actually have to put the card in fiscal car or sands without. Contact. And we'll set our restaurants that would walk over with the machine. They hold a machine out to you. You swipe your watch or you swipe your smartphone, you open up your wallet and swipe your cup. You never have to pull your card out there big over here on that. They are ahead of the curve. That's the term they use. And it's true. You're head of the curve on the no contact payment system here where Hannah by United States of America yet and they still want to see that car. I mean, I could go to the ATM and swipe milliwatts and take money out. How about that? Sounds, contact without contact. Visa, MasterCard, the most widely accepted cards across the board. The higher end boutiques and restaurants, they still take American Express. Make a note of that. Alright, if you plan to use your credit card above abroad, remember what I'm talking about? Let him let him know. So you don't lock you. All right. Think about the surcharges that's imposed every time you use your credit card, it's going to be there. Tourists, heavy cities. Well, That's Paris. You might come across vendors who do curves each stay away from the third body. Then this go to the dedicated banks, the dedicated, you know, currency exchange places. But I highly implore you, It's even better if you leave all your money at home and use your credit and debit cards, that's the best way, then you never have to visit any of the currency exchange. Okay? Let's see, let's see cash in advance, €0, yeah, you know about euros. Euros come in five hundred and two hundred one hundred fifty eight twenty tens and fives. Okay. There is no bill for €1. That's a coal mine. The coins are one-year-old, two-year-old. I'm a 50 year-old, 20-year-old, a 10, 5, 2, and again one. So there is no $1 bill, one Euro, okay? The lowest is going to be phi, alright? And then Interesting, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500. The rest are all coins. So be ready to count that. And then you call it funny money. You know, it looks different, it feels different. It's very colorful, it's beautiful. Let's see what else. Key points, only a few banks and money places except traveler's checks. Width. That's gone the way of so many things traverse texts like who's buying traveler's checks. Nobody Don't even think about bringing them over here. Then I'm gonna can't exchange it, probably accept somebody more. It's bizarre, but that's gone. Stick with your cards. Okay. Pay with your credit cards, debit cards. Okay. Check your bank account frequently. And this is one of the tips I have to give you. Because when you use your car in a foreign country, you never know if it's going to be compromised. So at the end of the day, habit, checking your bank just to see what your balances are going to see if there's any transactions that would you quick and throw it in there. You're in a foreign country. So check your bank balance is regularly, I suggest daily. Some people do it morning and night. You can never be too careful here. Bad people all over the world. So you want to make sure you protect your cards and then you can block them very quickly. Okay? But after that, I want to say an ATM and France is called a distributor. How about that? So if you need to find an ATM, you can say to a person, Wu a distributor, where is the distribute here? But you will have to 15 or 18 ends on every block. So you will have to ask that question. Most of the ATMs, they're going to have it in five or six different languages. So once you get to the ATM, hit a button, you can change it to English. And then you can go down and do what you need to do. Okay? So that's the greatest. Atm slows your card. They're getting. Just walk into the bank. And I know it seems dramatic like why did you take my card? Well, they duke done sometimes don't ask me why. The answer is different. Sometimes your car as well, just walk into the bank, don't pay and say, your ATM does guard, I need to get it back and they take the key is incredibly take the key, they open thing. They reached out. Scan I see your passport. Can I see your identification? And this shows you the current bang. Different? Yes. I've never had my card eaten before and I always thought at the age of car, that means your car and had been pulled from the bank or, or they don't cut it up or something dramatic happens. But even in France know sometimes my machine just doesn't like the numbers and he just flowers or God doesn't give it back. And so I've learned, oh, I just walk into the bank now. Good luck at the bank is having lunch. You're gonna have to come back later after two o'clock and then just get your current, that's your card, but again, keep it against the loan. Alright, so let's see what else. Make sure you know your PIN. Before you leave. Please note that the keypads and France have numbers only. There are no symbols. So I don't know what country you're from, but if your pin assembles at it, not going to work on the French keep bad. Day. It's only numbers. Okay. I already said this taken extra ATM card in case it gets so little gobble up by the machine or blocked by your home country. And that way you have an extra do not exchange at the airport. We talked about that earlier. Do not exchange joke currency at the airport. That's the worst exchange fees you could possibly encounter. So don't do that and do not exchange as your hotel. I mean, he's unlikely it's going to be a good exchange, So don't do that. And we've already talked about that. Don't purchase traveler's checks. So a lot on currency exchange, the bank times, a different lot of times I'm your banks in the US Open ofs MDs, LIGO tab, that's so here. No numbers and only numbers on the pad. Atms gobble up the cards. All about giving you entail the scanner you, this is all about making sure your trip is pleasurable and you prepared for any situation and occurs. You got to be like James Bond there when you arrive in Paris, you've got your list, you've got your checklist, you've got your adapters, you've got your backup critic guys, you've just changed your currency is, you know how to get around town, you pick the right hotel. That's what you got your language app, you've got your navigation apps. You're good to go. See you in the next lecture.
25. The List · Language Translation Apps: Okay, so now that we've talked a little bit about the navigational apps, now we're going to get into the language translation apps. Now, I had a cousin who for many, many years and he was telling you she wanted to visit Paris and she was so afraid of coming to France because she didn't speak the language. I'm like, It doesn't matter if you don't speak the language. We have so many language apps, it's three. Plus. Now has it better that you know a few words, you're going to have a better reception. The French love to correct you. That's another thing you know, they constantly correct you on how to say the word ride or what the word means like Emory about as a professor here. But all you need is this Google Translate. Because you know Google Translate, you can speak into it, hit that translation and let them listen to it. You can hit that translated and show them the words. How many times I've walked into a hair salon and I wanted something done. And I say, Oh, I like my hair cut a little shorter but on top of it, but I don't know how to say that in French. I said it in my Google app, translated it, hit translate the French, and hit the button and let the pharynx and listen to it. And afterward say physically, which means it. Thank you. This is beautiful. So download these apps, Google Translate before you leave Google Translate. Another one, translate. What's interesting is both on iTunes. I translate. Okay, That's a prese book. And I love Google Translate stamp on it. Live by that. Even though I'm living in France, I'd use that almost every time I walk out my door because there's always gonna be one word I don't know. And I could be in the supermarket trying to buy something. They might not know this name, this point. What does this? And then I put in it, That's the ingredient. Or sometime I'm looking at the menu and I don't recognize, you know, I don't even think I like duck. And the word is cannot and I ordered cannot. And I'm ET OT isn't diminishes and then I translated it. And it's a duck. And I ended my whole life because I kept saying, I don't like it. And then I come to France and eat and it almost every day because it's thought every menu. No other word for Duck was good. So there you go. So it's good to have that translation at Google Translate. That's my number one pick. You got I translate. You've got tripling go you got ago and you've got say I got Microsoft Translator, you've got way go. I mean, come on. That's just to stick with the basics, Google Translate. You also have Siri. I switch my Siri to French and instead English. So Siri, when I ask them a question in French, they asked me that question for it. So it's a great way to use the language and learn the language. But Google Translate, think about this. You can open that app and you haven't put it. Translate French to English. And then you hold the photo thing, the camera over it. Google the menu them. Translate everything in English and like, Oh, I read my papers like that now and it has increased my vocabulary. So I will scan a news article out of late per region, the journal here, or any of the French newspaper. And then I do, and it translates to English. I know I could read the French news and grow my vocabulary. So that's important. The translation apps. Number one, Google lab, number two series great. Number 3, 4, 5. That's up to you, but definitely use Google. So there you go. See you next lecture.
26. The List · Navigational Apps: Okay, so for these next three sections, I want to talk about just what I call some basic fundamentals. Now that we've talked about hotels and left bank, right bank. And where are you going to stay in the last two digits being your air these mon and how you going to eat the different cafes and associated with that, let's talk about some essentials, discounting, getting around the city, getting to these museums, getting into these campaigns, that kind of thing. So I'm going to start with navigation of apps. These are short lectures now, navigational apps, I want you to, before you leave home, we talked a little bit about another checklist. I want you to download this on your smartphone, Okay, Google Maps that's available for Android and iOS. Definitely get that, please. I want you to do Apple Maps. If you only have the iOS, only the Apple iPhone, I want you to download city mapper. And this is nice because if not a full fledged navigation of App Bot is great for when you traveling. And just now you put in, you're in Paris, now is giving you specific information, just prepares. So Google Maps, obviously that's global. Apple Maps as global, but city mapper. Now we're drilling be. Oh, that's awesome. Pretty helpful. Just another one. And that's available for Android and iOS. Okay. Something call was, WAS Z gave me this one. It's a collection of drivers working together to ensure that as few people as possible get caught out by traffic and incorrect map data. Why this constantly updated by millions and millions of users and gives you traffic time and you're not really in common. I think you need was WAS but I want to throw it out there because you never know. And it is available on Android and iOS. Now remember, good old MapQuest. I was a MapQuest be until I switched over to Google Maps and now, you know, Apple Maps. So yeah, MapQuest, these delink, this iOS as well as Android. And then I put in here also this drive mode. Again, remember I'm not recommending that you rent a car when you're in Paris. So this is not an app that I really want to write a ma'am, but if you do have a car, it is nice to drive mode. It's available in Android on a link. It's not going to be for your iPhone. And it jama gives you the good path if you're driving for when you're in sitting. So obviously the main apps, there's going to be Google Maps or Apple Maps. And I like the like the city mapper to, yeah, that's kinda cool. Google Maps, MapQuest, Apple Maps, and the city mapper. Download that before you leave your origination sitting. You'll be glad you did because that's gonna be kinda cool. Putting in the address and getting around the city very easily. You just mark your hotel as your home location. And every time I leave, you didn't have that address already built in Paris as a pedestrian city. Blame you want to tell you, you have to do more walk and you need a more steps. Outside. Maria, definitely have your your health app on your phone. You unify and you can do ten thousand, thirty thousand, five hundred thousand steps in one day. It is a well-considered. So you gotta be waves and uncomfortable shoes and walk it in yourself through Paris. It's great. That's all I want to sound. The navigational apps download those before you leave home. See you next lecture.
27. Personal Favorites · Memorable Parisian Strolls: Here we are around in the bin. So this is the second to the last lecture. And what I did was add grain and printed off some of my favorite personal, memorable strolls that I like to take when I'm in Paris and I share with all of my friends and my family. Because to me, that's the thing. This city is a walkable, pedestrian city. That's how you're going to experience Paris. That's how Paris is going to live within you and know it sounds dramatic, but obviously it was a life-changing moment for me. And that's why I'm here now. Because it is just incredible, so memorable strolls. You can write some of these down or you can write me after. So they have a word in France call plan year. Plan year, which means stroke. This is a national past-time here. Nato walk in His people I've ever run into. They walk after lunch, they walk out. They walk in the evening before the sunset. And so is standard procedure in Paris after you, then you take a full-on year, okay? And the city is filled with them. Just treasures around every corner does not have to be a dedicated route. It could just be a certain block queue love looking in the windows or near museum that's now close, but they got some great exhibits that you can still visually see from the exterior. The end, this set. That's an island. You know, there was an island in the center of parents. A stroll. It's absolutely beautiful. And sometimes on Sunday they have the book store, little sellers, the booksellers setup with the stalls. And I don't know, I'm a romantic. So this city works for me. I love, I romanticize everything. And I have just, I didn't grow up in a city where everything was just some visual and so, so sensory, and that's what Paris is. So you can stroke Holy Island, you've got the eels, St. Louis, another item. You cross the bridge, Paris, get all these beautiful bridges that you can cross the cross all through the city. It's one thing. Stroll in Paris during the day. It's a whole nother baby. When you stroll pairs at night, you should see the lights on these bridges in Paris. And ethnicity is filled with people. It's like nobody's sleeping. Everybody is strolling through the night. Shot into two marries the Tuileries, gardens. Absolutely. Breathtaking. The left bank. By bank. One of the most famous walks in Paris, wait to you, walk to the left bank and you think that architecture and those cobblestone streets and those art galleries and cafes and bookshops. 0 again, this a part of me about, more about urban parks at a part of me would love to live in Paris, Not to mention if I could afford it. Because yes, it's just rates. People are paying 2, $3 million for the size of a closet just to be in that city. And that's a little bit. Okay. But the left bank, again, the bookstores along the river. But seeing River, Mark know that's going to be a stroll where that funicular is, where Socrative core is the big church where all the artists is the plus the Tet. That's a strong Boulevard Saint-Germain, that's the name of a street in Paris. You're going to see is the long boulevard. Some people walk up one side of the street, cross and come down the other just because it's such an IEP goal to see Boulevard some Gemma, You can't miss it. The Luxembourg Gardens for the Jardin, French for Garden Zhe. I didn't do Luxembourg spectacular. They've got these beautiful painted benches there. You can sit, you can have your lunch, you can, you can read there for hours. And they got a beautiful pond and the children bringing their sail boats or red samples. And right there on the lake, spectacular. Absolutely. Spec. Vacuolar Paris, it has this thing called passages. You can walk the passages of Paris. And these are these ancient arches through different arrowed BCE months, sections, neighborhoods of the city. And you walk through these covered passages and they've got shops there, cafes and bookshops and beautiful clothes and paintings. And I don't know what to tell you that it's absolutely gorgeous. What else do I want to recommend? The Mariah my son recently rent it or they say The moray. The Mariah recently rented an apartment there for the next four years. So you know, I'm beside myself. I actually now have an apartment in Paris in the moray to visit. And this place, It's just heaven. He lives in New York, but he's got clients in pairs and he's spinning more time there. So I get to benefit from the next four years of him being here in Paris. Now, nobody ever times of walking around the moray. It's just spectacular. I don't know what else to say. It's absolutely gorgeous. The architecture, the cobblestone. It's one of the most ancient, ancient, ancient sections of Paris. That's something that I just didn't park. There have been tagged upset and apart and crack. It didn't hit that on of course. But I have because I cannot believe I'm surrounded with such history and beauty. And the gardens, It's almost like they trim the trees and the roses with their teeth. What is it with this country? Everything has to be so magnificent and beautiful. Paris is all you've ever driven. And tell you right now. It's all you'll ever think about when you leave. It's all you will ever compare. Everything else you do in life. Because it's that a big thing. So yes, don't forget the flea markets. You're going to go next if you're into every term Bro can't, which means Flea Market dunk. But can you imagine that chunk here? Up by painting, this painting that, I mean, my son bought me this 25-year-old, 30 us balanced frame, gorges here with the artist.
