1. Welcome: Hi, guys. My name is Ke Marns. I'm a self taught digital Illustrator based on Long Island New York. Welcome to my class. Here are some examples of my recent plant studies. In this class, we will be creating the same style illustration. 2. Class project: Our class project will be creating a stylized lily Stargazer. Now I know there are tons of different lilies out there, but this is one of my favorites. Utilizing three main things in this class. One will be clipping masks. T will be renaming and reorganizing our layers, and three is going to be making groups of layers. It's great practice, and I can't wait to get into it with you. Everything that you'll need to start this beautiful creation is listed under resources for download. 3. Setup & Base Color: Okay, so once you open up your procreate file, you're going to notice two things. There are two layers, one is sketch, and one is named textured paper. We're going to be working between the two, so you're going to add a new layer, and we're going to rename it. Petals base. Okay. Next step, we're going to open up our reference photo just so we have it. This is under class resources, so we have that for you to download as well. Okay. Once you have your reference box open, you're just going to pick a color that you want to work with, whatever color palette. You can copy what I'm doing or you can do the pink. You can pick something else. It's totally up to you. Now, using my technical pen, and I'm just going to trace over the sketch that I have here, I'm going to speed it up for you a little bit, so that way, you're not here all day, but we're just doing one smooth stroke all the way around, and then we're going to color fill it. Okay. Once you have your outline complete, we're going to color fillets. You're going to go to the circle, top right hand corner and just drag and drop so easy. Next, we're going to make our first clipping mask. So we're going to go to our layers, make a new layer. And on the box, you're going to hit clipping mask. Now, remember, everything is going to go straight onto what you have below, right? Okay, we're going to pick a new color. I'm using like a beige, something off white, and I'm going to use my soft brush. And then zoom in a little bit, so we can get a better view. My opacity is about four or 5%, and excuse me, the brush size, and the opacity is about 50%. Now, I'm just starting from the middle of the flower and just kind of following along the shape of the petal. It's going to be more of a wash look. Okay. So it's not too defined, very light. Out, check it out. And then just up and down motions. I'm adding in this off white color to each petal, starting at the center and dragging the pen down. Then again, the same thing. It just gives it a feel of multi dimension because you have the dark pink, you have this off white, and it's just going to make the star gaze or lily pop. 4. Petal Highlights & Shadows: A Okay. First, I merged those two layers together of the petals that we had, and I added a new layer on top. Now, with a white color and my soft brush, I'm going to add some details. Well, some highlights. So brush size is about 3%, and opacity is about 49. Okay. And I'm just making sure I'm on my layer. And then in a flicking motion from the center of the petal, like we did before, I'm going to lower it a little bit 2%. We're just going to make brush strokes, following the shape of the petal. You can do as much and as little as you'd like. I like for it to be a little bit more high contrast, so I'm going to add quite a bit. So just like streaky motions. And I'm going to do this to each petal. It's a little time consuming, but I feel like it makes it pop. We're almost there. I feel like that looks pretty good. I'm going to add a little more here, add a little more there. We're going to this highlights. Perfect. Now we're going to add a layer below it. And we're going to name it shadows. Now, I'm just going to use a dark color that I'm color picking from the reference photo. It's like a dark brown and my soft brush. Making sure I'm on my layer. Okay. And then from the center. Let's see out. I'm just going to add a little bit of darkness in between, where the petals would be overlapping. So from the center and then just dragging it down a little bit. And this is all preference, whatever look you're going for. That's the amount of shadows that you're going to add. Okay? So we're just going to finish this up. I'm also going along the straight lines from the sketch because there's a shadow there as well. Just giving a little extra depth. Zoom out. Check it out. Looks pretty good. Okay. Now the next thing we're going to do is we're going to we're going to group the petal layers together. Swipe left on highlights, swipe left on shadows, swipe left on petal base, and then hit group. Now they're all in a little file together. We're going to rename it petals. And if you want to condense it, you just hit a little on the right. 5. Leaves: Our next step is going to be the leaves. So we're going to go to our layers, and we're going to condense the group that we just made, and we're going to add a layer underneath it. We're going to rename it leaves. Okay. Now, I'm going to be using a green that I color picked previously. It's like a light green, and we're going to be using our technical pencil once again. And starting from the bottom, we're just going to outline the leaves. Now, make sure to make it like a whole stroke so you can color fill it. Now we're going to go to the top with the same color. We're going to outline it once again. Then we're going to color fill it. Perfect. Next, we're going to do the larger leaf, a darker color, just drag down on your values. And we're going to outline this as well. Whoops. Technical difficulties here. I'm just going around the other leaf. All right. Color fil. Now let's go to the bottom and do the same process. Outline the sketch. Go around the other leaf between the flowers and color fil. Perfect. Next thing we're going to do is we're going to add some highlights to the leaves. So we're going to add a layer above it. And we're adding this as a clipping mask just so that way we can meet. And I'm going to use like a pretty light, like a lime green. And also, we are going to be using the soft brush. The zoom in. And then just starting from the edges. I'm just laying it down where I think that the light would hit it, and I'm leaving the dark as a shadow. So really, you're doing shadows and highlights right now. Cool. And that's it. Now we're just going to merge the two layers together because we like them. S. 6. Center : Okay, our leaves are done. They look great. The next thing we're going to do is we're going to make a new layer, and we're going to do it above the petals group that we made, and we're going to rename it. Center of flower. Just so we have an idea of what's going on. Alright. I'm going to go to my soft brush and pick out a light green. I'm going to do about 2% and the opacity is about 50%. And then just in the middle. I'm just going to add some colors. So in a circular motion, and then I'm flicking a little bit onto each leaf. So that each leaf has a little bit of green. So it looks like it's just kind of all coming together. Then with a darker value, I'm going to zoom in here, we're just in the c circular motion, just making it darker, just like that. Perfect. Next thing we're going to do is we're going to work on the stemen, they call them. So you're going to add a new layer. You can call it Stamen. And we're going to use, like, a yellow weave off white color. We're going to pick out our technical pen. Grab in that color. You can also get it from the reference photo right there. And then I'm just going to trace the stamens. Now, you can color phil, drop in the color, like we did before, to speed up the process. Whoops. Let's try again. Okay, perfect. Or you can just color it in. It's totally your preference and your work style. We're just going to do each one. And then when we're done with this, we're going to add a shadow on top. All right, one more. Looking good. And just color fill that perfect. All right. So we're going to add a new layer on top. And we're going to make this a clipping mask. Grab a dark brown of your choice. Okay. And then with your soft brush, Size is about 2%, opacity is about 50%, and we're just going to add a shadow just like a line where we think it would be, on the bottom of the stateen, coming from the bottom and then drawing up. Perfect. Then when you're happy with it, you can condense the two layers by pinching them together. I. 7. Stigma & Dots: All right, so the stamen is done, and now we're going to work on the stigma, they call it. They're the little dots that are on top of the semen. So we're going to color pick whatever we like. And add a new layer. And we're going to call this stigma. Go to your technical pencil. And then you're just going to trace around and you can color feel if you'd like, or if you feel more comfortable, you can just color it in yourself, whatever is best for you. Now, I made these all different shapes, different sizes, so that way, it gives it a more realistic feel because they shouldn't all be the same shape and the same size. Flowers just aren't like that. All right. Next, we are going to add a highlight. So we're going to add a new layer on top. And we're going to add it as a clipping mask, and we're going to rename it Stigma highlight. Just cause we have a lot of layers going on, so I want to keep everything organized for you. All right. You're going to pick, like a light yellow and with a soft brush. You're just going to go along the edges, and the clipping mask is going to do all the work for you. You can be sloppy, and it's just going to go directly onto the dots that we drew. I'm just tracing around the tops of them. And that's it. I'm going to merge those two layers together. Add a new layer, and we're going to call this dots. Now, I think it's pollen. I'm not sure. Don't come after me. We're going to color pick for the dots. And then using our technical pencil, making sure we're on our layer. We're just going to color them all in. Take your time, make them small, make them different sizes. I feel like that's what will really bring it to life. I'm going to speed up the process a little bit, and I'll see you in a minute. I'm making my way around town, zooming out when I need to, zooming in when I need to. This is one of my favorite parts of digital art is this little detailing part where you get to take your time, put your stamp on it, use different brushes, use different colors, and everybody's going to come out differently. So I'm sot excited to see what everyone's end result looks like. Alright, we're almost done. We have two more petals to go. And I'm trying to do a variation of sizes and shapes just so that way it's not generic. And let's take a look and we're done. 8. Background Box: All right, so we're on our last step here. We're going to make our background. You're going to go to water and find wash. I'm just double checking. Yep. It's a procreate brush, so everyone should have it in their water pack. And we are going to go two layers. And then you are going to go to texture paper and add a layer above it. We're going to rename this background. Or box. Now you're going to choose whatever color you'd like. It doesn't have to be this light pink that I'm using. It could be purple, it could be green, and we're going to make a box around our illustration. Okay. The brush size I about 8% opacity is like 57, and then you're just going to literally make a rectangle and color it in. Now, minus pretty light, so I'm probably going to duplicate the layer. Yeah, I'm going to duplicate it. And then if you want to make it sharper, you can go with your eraser tool, and here, I'm just playing with the opacity. You can multiply the layer if you'd like to make it look like watercolor paper. And then as well, you can go to the eraser tool and shape it up. I'm just doing that here, making it nice and crisp and getting rid of those little smudge lines, and that's it. 9. Thank you : Congratulations, you finish. Thank you so much for taking my class. Most importantly, I hope that you learned something, and I can't wait to see what you created. Make sure it a posted under the gallery so we can all love it.
