Origami Basics: Learn to Fold 7 Origami Boats

1. Introduction: Hi, everyone. My name is Kevin, and I'm an origami artist. I've been holding and designing my own origami is for the last 10 years. Origami is very meditative for me, and I love the idea of being able to create a work of art from something as simple as just a sheet of paper. In this course, I'll be teaching you how to fold seven of my favorite origami boats. You learn how to fold a yacht, sailboat, steamboat, even a vote. That's also a magic trick. You don't need any previous experience. I'll teach you all the skills you need. As we go along, we'll start off really simple, and then it will get a little bit more difficult as we progress through the course. This course is part of a larger Siri's I'm releasing to share my passion for origami. It's a beginner Siri's that can teach anyone how to fold animals, boxes, flowers, action models and a lot more. But for now, let's turn now to Folsom boats 2. Paper Ideas: one of the best parts about origami is you don't need any expensive supplies to get started . All you need is paper. Every boat in this course will be folded from a square sheet of paper, all the using just the standard origami paper that you can buy online or pretty much any local art store. If you do go to a local art store and you can't find out origami paper, go check the scrapbooking section. There you can usually find all sorts of cool, different designs and patterns paper. Now the paper I'll be using is six inches by six inches. If you have a different size, that's totally fine. And this paper works really great because it does have color on one side, and then it's white on the other side. So that works perfectly for boats that have sales or the ones have smokestack. Now, if you only have single colored paper, it doesn't have quite the same effect, but it will work. Or you could try printing a design on one side or gluing two different colored sheets together. You even take a newspaper, music paper or a sheet of printer paper and cut any of those into a square. Don't be afraid to experiment and get creative 3. Yacht: in this lesson, we're gonna learn how to fold a yacht that has a sale on it. This one only takes a couple folds to make, so it's really easy. That's the perfect. I want to start our first lesson off with, and it does have a little stand on the back so it can stand up on its own. Let's get started. I'm using a six inch square of origami paper. This white side is going to be the sale. We'll start with the colored side up, foreign oriented like this. Now we'll valley fold in half along this diagonal. So we'll bring this left corner over to the right corner, make sure both of those corners lineup, Then hold them in place. Increase it all the way across. Now for this next step, watch me Pulled it first. Before you do it for yourself, we're gonna make a valley full. That starts out at this corner and runs this direction. And this edge is going to end up perpendicular with this edge. The little sit right here. Now show you what I mean. Pull that edge up and we'll make sure it's perpendicular to this edge. And then it should run all the way out to this corner. So it started right from that corner and the increase it all the way over. It should look like that. Next we're going to unfold that that we're going to unfold the previous step and then we can flip this over so the white side is facing up. Next, you'll notice this mountain pulled we have right here. We're going to reverse that and turn it into a valley fold. So we'll just pulled this up, increase it out to right there. Next, we'll reform this other valley fold that we already have. Now you can pick the whole thing up, reforming this crease we made in the first step. And then this crease should reverse all the way out to the corner as we flatten everything . Now, this final step you can do from either side, it will just affect which way the sale is facing. So I like to keep it facing this way. So I'm gonna turn the whole thing over, and then we're gonna make a valley fold, bringing this point upto where these edges meat right here. Increase that down. I'll show you close up then we can turn that back over. And our yacht is all done. If you look at the back, you have this little point. You can fold that down at a 90 degree angle to make this stand. This one is convey difficult to get it to stand up on its own. But if you did it right, you should be able to get it. But there you have it. That is our first boat. This is a really fun, easy one to make. They will get a little bit more difficult as we go along, but the simple ones a really fun to fold as well. 4. Sailboat: on the last lesson. We learn how to fold a boat that has one sale on it. So now we're gonna learn how to fold a boat that has to sales. No, this one still pretty easy. But it's really cool looking. I can also stand up on its own. This is one of my favorite simple boats. So let's get started. I'll be using a six inch sheet of origami paper again. And just like last time, the white side will end up being the sales. We're going to start with the colored side up now. We're going to Valley fold in half along both of the diagonals. So we'll bring this bottom left corner up to the top right corner, make sure both of those corners line up and hold them in place and then increase it all the way across. Now unfold up. Next. We'll bring the bottom right corner up to the top left corner. Hold that in place. Increase it. Cornered. 1/4 no unfolds. Next, turn the paper over. Now we're going to valley. Fold in half along the horizontal and the vertical, so we'll bring this top edged down to the bottom edge make sure it lines up corner to corner and increase it all the way across and then unfold. Next, we'll bring this right edge over to the left edge, increase that one down and unfold again. Next, we're going to bring just thes three corners into the center of the paper. We'll start with his bottom left corner. Spring it right into the center. Should be a bunch of creases meeting all in the middle to make sure it lines up. Increase it down. Now move on to the bottom. Right. And the top. Right Next. We're going to unfold these two corners. Next, we'll bring this corner on the bottom left into the center of this X right here. Now hold that crease in place and then reform this valley fools. Now, repeat those steps with this corner will bring this top right corner into the center of this X and then reform that valley full. Now, watch me fold this next step before you do it yourself. We're gonna swing this corner out and we're gonna form a new valley fold that runs just inside this edge. But it will run parallel to this edge before it out about this much. There's not an exact reference for this. It just affect the size of the sale. About that much usually looks really good. Now, this next step is going to form a bunch of creases. At the same time, I'm gonna rotate it this way. And now these two edges, they're gonna fold in and meet each other. And then this X is going to form while we do that, so I'll show you what I mean. You just bring these edges in to meet each other. It'll start to close up on its own along the other exist increases. Just close it all the way up until it looks like that. Then lay it on the table and increase everything down firmly. Next, we're going to bring this bottom point up to the center where the colors change. Here, line it up right there and increase it down. Now, if you fold that out at a right angle and then turn it around, it will stand up on its own. You can be all done here, but there is another step to make it so it looks the same on both sides. So I'll show you that It's also a great opportunity to teach you what an open sink is. So if you unfold and then we're going to unfold again back to this step and then turn the paper over, make sure your paper looks like this. Now you'll notice the square in the center here. We need to make sure every one of these creases is a mountain fold. Some of them already are. This one's a mountain bold, but this side increase it to make that one a mountain fold and do the same thing on the bottom and on the left side. Now you'll see that we have this square that all folds in the same direction, and as we close everything back up the center of this exits inside that square is going toe form inside of the model. So if you begin to close it up like we did before, you'll push down on this X, and that should sink into the center. Close everything up. Make those nice for increases again, and that step is what's called on open sink that's used pretty regularly in a lot of origami models, so it's a good one to learn. Now that should stand up on its own again and it looks the same from both sides. So I like to fold it like this. I think it looks great, but we are all done with our sailboat, so I'll see in the next lesson. 5. Magic Boat: Now this lesson we're gonna learn how to fold one called the Magic Boat. This is a really simple boat to fold, but it is also a magic trick. Really old magic trick where you ask the spectator toe, hold onto the sale and then close their eyes. But while they're eyes are closed, you make too little valley folds and then ask them to open their eyes. And now they're hanging onto the bow of the ship instead of the sale. That's a pretty cool little magic trick. Let's get down to it now. We're gonna take a six inch sheet of origami paper and we'll start with the colored side down. Now we'll valley fold in half along both of the diagonals will bring this top right corner down to the bottom left corner and hold it in place, increase it all the way across and then unfold. Next, we'll bring the top left corner down to the bottom right corner, increase that corner to corner and then unfold. Next, we're gonna make what's called a blintz fold and see that we just bring each of these four corners into the center of this X. We'll start with the bottom left corner, spring it right into the center and then crease it down. Then we'll repeat that with the other three corners will move on to the top, left, okay. And the top, right. And now the bottom. Right now we're unfold all four of those corners. Next, we're going to make a valley fold that runs right between the centres of these two exits. So to do that, we're gonna bring this point in the center where the creases meet the edge in tow. Lie along with center of the X and then hold that in place. And as you crease, you're going to stop right where these diagonals are. Show you that close up. You can see that stops right where this crease line is. That will unfold that. We're gonna do that with the other three sides, so we'll rotate as we go. We'll rotate once, hold it up to the center of the X, increase its stuffing of the day agonal and then unfold, Rotate and repeat, rotate and repeat. And if you're one more time, we're back where we started Now for the final step just turned the paper over. We're gonna form a lot of creases. At the same time, though, you'll notice this square right here if you begin to fold each of those creases at the same time and then holds opposite corners. And then if you push down in the center as you swing these corners in to meet each other and then take both of these points and swing them out to the same side. Yes. Now, if you just rotate that there, we have our magic boat. And again, to demonstrate the trick, you'll have someone hold onto the sale. You ask them to close their eyes and while they're eyes were closed, just pulled these points down. Then ask them to open their eyes and they're holding the bow of the ship instead of the sale. Now, there we have it. I will see you all in the next lesson. 6. Steamboat: in this lesson, we're gonna learn how to fold a steamboat that has a really cool smoke stack on it. Do you like this one? A lot. Now is the fold this We will be encountering a new kind of hold called a squash. Hold those. They're done on the back here. It's a pretty simple version of a squash fool. But when we get to it, I'll show you exactly how those work. So let's get started. I'll be using a six inch sheet of origami paper and will be starting with the colored side down. First, we're gonna valley full in half along the horizontal sobering this bottom edge up to the top edge. Just make sure it lines up corner to corner and increase it all the way across and then unfolds. Next, we're gonna bring that bottom edge up to that crease we just made Increase that one down. Next, we're gonna bring this bottom edge on the right upto lie along the raw edge of the paper right here, and in doing so, a bisects this angle, so show you what I mean, do the same thing on the left side that will unfold both of those. Next, we're gonna turn the whole thing over right to left. Next will be making a squash hold. So to do that, you're going to separate these two layers apart from each other. And then you'll start to swing this part over forming this crease that we made. As you do that it will form a little triangle and you can press that triangle down. And then as you do that, you should have a new crease that starts to form that will run vertically all the way up to the top. Make sure that stays vertical. Just lying these edges up at the top, they should lie right on top of each other that it should look like that. Next, we're going to make that same squash pulled on the left side. So open those layers apart. Swing it over, form that triangle, make sure it lines up at the top, increase it all the way. Next we'll take this top edge. We're gonna bring it all the way down to the bottom edge. Increase that down. Next. We're going to swing this edge back up, and we're going to form a new crease that runs right along the edge. That's underneath it. So if you bring that flap up, you'll see that edge underneath. And just make sure it lines up, increase it across next. We're going to take this corner right here. Look at this one Really close. We're gonna fold that corner up just like this. And so now this edge is vertical in this edge, actually lines up with the crease that's on the other side. We'll do that same thing on the left side. Now we can unfold both of those. They will look back on the right side again. We're going to turn this into a squash, fooled, just like we did with the previous stuff. So you swing that over forming that little triangle at the bottom. Then, as you do that, you should have the crease that runs all the way up to the top and repeat all that on the left. Now you can turn the whole thing over. No, right here. We can be all done. Or if you'd like, you can make a small stand. I like to keep the whole of the ship really big, but if you wanted to stand up on its own, you can fold a small portion behind. So we'll flip this over and make just a really small crease here has to be enoughto hold the weight of the ship. But I wanted to be small enough, so the whole still looks really big. So I went just about that much. Don't pull that out. Turn it back around and stand it up. Should be able to balance it just right. But we are all done. Got to learn how toe make squash folds while folding a really cool steamboat. I'll see you guys in the next lesson. 7. Speedboat: this lesson, we're gonna learn how to fold a boat that has a really cool color change on the windshield . Now, as they fooled this, we will encounter a new kind of hold called a powerful. Now fold that pedal fold. I will go really slowly just to make sure it's nice and clear as we walk through it. At the end, we will also be doing some three D shaping, which we haven't really done yet, either. So there's a lot to learn in this one. So let's get started. I'll be using a six inch sheet of origami paper. We're gonna start with the colored side up. Now. We'll valley fold in half along both of the diagonals, so we'll bring this top right corner down to the bottom left corner, lying those corners up on the increase in all the way across, and then unfolds and bring the top left corner down to the bottom right corner. Yeah, then unfold. Now turn the paper over next valley fold in half along the horizontal, and the vertical will bring this top edged down to the bottom edge, increase that one all the way across, then unfolds. Now We'll bring the right edge over to the left edge and then unfolds for the next step. We're gonna form all of these creases at the same time. And the easiest way to do that is to bring these two opposite corners and will bring them down to meet 1/3 corner. So if you start to full, does bring them all the way down to meet up that once they meet in that corner could bring the fourth corner down to meet the other three. As you do that, it should form a nice square that increase it all down firmly. Rotate that you should have two flaps on the left and then two flaps on the right. Next, we're gonna bring this edge on the bottom right into lie along this center vertical crease . Do that with just the top flap. Do the same thing on the left side. Next, we're going to take this point. We're gonna fold it behind, making a mountain fold right along with these edges just like that. Then we'll unfold both of these flaps. And now this next step is going to be the pedal fold. So what you'll do is you'll take this top layer and we'll swing that point up as you do that the's creases right here are going to start to form. So you could just close those up. Then on the top half increases that are starting to form will actually be reversing. But if you just swing the point all the way up, it all happens pretty naturally. And then you can just press it all down and then turn the whole thing over. That will take that point, will swing it back up. Next, we'll take this bottom right edge and line it up with that centre vertical crease, just like we did on the other side. And repeat that on the left. No, open both of those up. And we already have this crease running across right here. So we'll form another pedal fold right along that crease swing that point up. And then all those should start so fooled at the same time, press it all down. Now for the next step, we're gonna need to pick this up. Then we're going to take the whole right half of this model, and we're going to be turning it inside out. So the step is a little different than anything we've done before. You're gonna spread these layers apart and open it up a little bit. Then if you look at it from this angle, you'll notice these creases Those are all going to reverse and turn into a valley folds. So these Vertex is right here. You just press on those until it sort of pops through to the other side. Then you can start to close it back up. And as you do that, you'll see those creases I was talking about. They'll start to reverse themselves and you'll just need toe help a little bit in that process. Just close it up, inform those creases, and then we'll close it up this way. It should look like that. Now, for the next step, we're going to fold this layer from right to left, just like you're turning. The page of the book is called a book. Hold, actually, then we'll swing this point up to the top. Then we'll close that layer back up, and next we're going to take this point of the top. Just one of these points. We're gonna swing it all the way down to the bottom, But there is a layer of paper that's trapped underneath, so just do this slowly and carefully. But as you start to pull down, there should be a trapped layer that just untracked itself. Then you can swing that all the way down to the bottom. Then we'll turn this over. We'll do that same thing on this side. Just swing that down and release that layer that's trapped in there. Now we can rotate this and next we're going to swing this point from right to left. But as we do that, we're going to open this layer of paper. So swing that point over while you're opening that until it looks like that, and then turn the whole thing over. Do the same thing on this side. But we'll be swinging this point from left to right. Then open that layer. Now we'll rotate this 180 degrees. Next, we're going to take this edge. I'm gonna fold it down to this edge, flying those edges up, and then you can increase it across. Next will unfold that they were going to take take it and tuck this point into this pocket . It's using that crease. We just made, then close it up, turn the whole thing over that we repeat those steps on this side. So bring this edge down to this edge and then unfolds. Open that pocket, doing the point back down and close it up. Next, we're going to take this point. We're going to fold it up. We're not gonna fold it all the way up to the top. It'll be a little bit below that. About halfway or 2/3 of the way doesn't have to be exact. But you do just want to make sure that it lies right along this crease that's underneath it . Then we'll take the point underneath and will fold it up right along that same crease. Then you can unfold that one and then re fold it. But tuck it underneath and then unfold this one as well. Now we're going to reverse this crease and tuck it inside. Next, we're going to pick that up and we're gonna make this three dimensional. So if you see this edge that's right in the center. You'll just push her right down on that white part while you're opening up the sides, it will start to get three D and then right here in the center, you can pop the windshield open and you might need to press from the bottom. Just open it up. Should look about like that from the bottom. You can press on this a little bit if you need Teoh and there we have it. We are all done. This is a really cool looking boat. I like this one a lot. I love the color change for the windshield. I'll see everyone in the next lesson. 8. Sampan: this lesson, we're gonna learn how to fold a sampan, which the really common type of boat in China, it has a flat bottom that has a shelter on the side. Now the end of this one. It does involve a pretty difficult step where you have to turn the paper inside out Fogo really slowly to walk you through that one. Hopefully, everyone's able to follow along. This one was folded from a six inch eat, and that's what I used in the video. But it is a little bit easier if you have a larger sheet of paper. So if you happen to have nine inch or 12 inch paper, that'll be perfect. But we'll be using that six inches. That's what most people have Now we will be starting with the colored side down. Now we'll valley fold in half. Along both of the diagonals will bring the top right corner down to the bottom left corner . Increase that across and unfold, Then bring the top left corner down to the bottom right corner, hold it in place and then increase that one all the way and then unfolds. Now we'll make a blintz fold sobering each of these four corners until I along the center of this X, we'll start with the top left corner. Bring it down right in the center, increase that in the top, right corner and the bottom right corner and then the bottom left. Next, we're going to fold this point out to the center of this edge. Let's line it up right in the center out there, there were into the same thing with the opposite corner. Now, if the other two corners fold those out to the sides, then looking at the bottom left will bring this corner into the center of this X ray here and then fold it in along the existing crease and the same thing with the top rate. Just bring it into that X and then fold it over. No, I'm gonna rotate this way. Then we'll turn the whole thing over next will bring this bottom edge into this crease that's running across the same thing with this top edge. Next we're going toe, make a valley fold that runs right in between these two edges here where the white is showing through underneath. Hold it right there. And then these edges should line up in the center afterwards, then we do the same thing with these other three corners. Now, for this next step, we're going to make a crease that starts right at the center of this edge where this crease meets the edge. It was going to run out this direction all the way to this point, so that's easiest. If you start right in the centre on top and then hold that in place with one finger and then start out from the corner on the rate, and then you can bring those in to meet each other in the center, compress it all down firmly. Then we'll be doing that same thing with the other three corners. You know, the layers air a little sick here. Just try to hold this part of the places you fooled it. Next will bring this top point into the center the same thing with the bottom point. Now, this next step is where it gets a little bit difficult, but I'll try to make it as clear as possible. So if you look in the center, spread these layers apart from each other, making it all three dimensional, then we'll turn it around and look from the other side. So we're gonna be turning this entire thing inside out. So the easiest way I found is, if you put your thumbs right on these two points, then you'll just push those points through to the other side. It can feel like you're going to rip the paper, but just use a little bit of force and push them right through. And then hopefully the paper doesn't rip on you. Then turn it around and do the same thing with these points and then flatten everything else. Make it nice and three d again that if you look at it from the bottom, see, there might be a little bit of wrinkles here, just smooth them out. And then, if you make really light creases running along these edges, that can help to smooth things out a bit. Then turn it back over. And then right here, you'll notice some layers. Just pull that up and same thing with the other side. Just grab those layers and pull it right up, then just finished making everything nice and smooth. And then we are all done. I hope you were able to make it through to the end. If not, just go back and try again. You'll definitely be able to get it. Just watch the video and see what's happening and then give it another shot. But this is a really cool looking one. I love the color change. I will see you all in the next video. 9. Motorboat: when this final lesson, we will be learning how to fold a motorboat. This is my personal favorite. Out of all the boats that top in this course, this one looks really cool. It does involve another one of those difficult steps at the end where you have to turn the paper inside out. But if you could make it through that step, it is well worth it. This one is awesome. So let's get started now. We've got our six inch sheet of origami paper to start with the colored side down valley. Fold in half along the horizontal and the vertical spring. His top edged down to the bottom edge. Make sure lines up all the way across and increase it down and then unfold. They bring the right edge over to the left edge. Priests, uh, unfold. Next, we'll make a blintz. Folds will bring each of these four corners into the center of this X. We'll start with this top left right into the center, in the top. Right now, the bottom right and the bottom left. We'll rotate that next. We'll full this whole thing in half, so we'll bring the bottom edge up to the top edge. Next, we'll take this top edge and were pulled it down to the bottom edge. And as we pulled this stone, just try to make sure this point doesn't slip out. So line it up, then. Just try to make sure you hold that point in place underneath and increase it all down. Now we'll turn that over into the same thing on this side next one to make a valley fooled right where this little piece of white is showing through. Just with one flap full, that right down over the same thing on the left side. Turn it over the same thing on this side. Next, we're going to bring this edge down to this bottom edge, bisecting this corner on the right. No, there are a lot of layers here. And then you want to make sure this point doesn't slide out. When I started right from that point cure that lies on the edge underneath threat there, then we'll turn that over and we'll do the same thing on this side. It will be on the left this time. We're gonna leave this site how it is next. We'll take this edge. It will fold it down to the bottom edge and turn that over the same thing on this side. Next, we'll look at that from the bottom, and if you pull these layers off to the sides, you'll notice it starts to turn three dimensional and you can flatten this layer out underneath. So if you start to flatten that and then fold these walls up to the sides until it looks about like this now we're gonna need to turn this whole thing inside out, just like we did in one of those previous videos. So I'm going to turn this over, We'll start with this side. So I'm gonna put my thumb on these two points. This one. It's a little easier to do just one point at a time. I will push this point on the right straight through. Then we'll push through the point on the left. We'll turn it around. Now these ones are a little more difficult. These little layers right here they want to spread apart as you do this. So you want to make sure you hold that together and then push one point through Yes. Go nice and slow. Now with the other point should look like this. It's really easy to rip the paper on that step. So just go really slow and be careful. Now you turn this over, could flatten out the bottom and then just run your fingers on right here. Make really light mountain folds. This just helps to keep it three dimensional. Do that on the back as well. I'll turn that back over. Men, You noticed this one flap on the front. You just take this one layer of paper and pull it straight up. Little form your windshield. Then you have a motorboat. This one is really cool looking. So I hope you made it through to the end without ripping the paper. Just give it a couple more tries if you couldn't make it.
