About This Class

Are you looking to expand your character design or fantasy art drawing skills? In this class, you’ll create an inventory of magical items and accessories and learn how to draw objects in a cartoon style. From a witch’s hat to magical potions to a staff, this fun illustration project will help you accessorize your future character designs exploring fantasy themes. By the end of this course, you’ll have drawn and coloured over ten different magical items, including glowing gems and elixirs in glass vials!

This is the perfect course to take before or along with our Magical Character Design Course, since you’ll use one of the items as a reference and starting point to design a fantasy character!

By the end of this course, you will know how to:

  • Draw over 10 magical items
  • Shade different objects
  • Add enhancing details like glows and texture
  • Create a balanced composition
  • Differentiate warm and cool tones

Materials:

  • My demo is drawn digitally using Medibang Paint Pro, but you may use any medium!
  • If you're working traditionally, I recommend pencil, fineliner and coloured pencils
  • To learn how to use digital techniques, see our lesson: Intro to Digital Art in MediBang

1. Introduction: You love fantasy stories, are games and are obsessed with all things magical. In this class, you'll learn to draw magical objects and design items. That would be an any wizard satchel. I'll guide you through each step to make sure your fantasy items feel cohesive in 3D in a semi realistic style. In these series of lessons, we'll sketch out different magical objects, including potions, which is hot mushrooms, a satchel, a staff, and more. By the end of this class, you'll have fully drawn and colored a variety of magical items for your wizards inventory, a great creative exercise for aspiring character and game designers. You're welcome to follow along with me step-by-step. If you're a beginner, otherwise, feel free to experiment with the items in your inventory. And freestyle. I'll be drawing digitally, but you can draw along in the medium of your choice. I'd love to see what you've created at the end. So please share your artwork with our community. 2. Sketching Your Magical Items: So today we are going to be creating a Warlocks satchel or an apothecaries satchel. So we'll be focusing on what you would find in their backpack there, sac satchel, anything like that? Think about ingredients that they would use to develop potions. The items that they would weld to conjures spells. Think about what wizard or a magical being would carry around in their bag as necessities. Or even think about a time period that they would live in and base the items off of that as well. So for a wizards inventory, these are some things that you might find either in their home, in their bag that they carry. So we have a culture in here. We have lots of ingredients. So herbs, some crystals here, mushrooms. We also have some examples of the actual bag itself. So you can also draw this purse, egg satchel. It can just be like a sack, just like this one up here. Maybe it has coins in it. We have potions up here, a staff. You could do a broomstick or a witch if you'd like. We have books here, scrolls, candles, lots of different examples here. You don't have to do this many items, but this is just something to help you jog your memory. Yeah, so here's a, another example of thumb. Warlocks, spell casters pack here. Again, we have a scroll here, a book of lore. So you can do a spell book if you play gems, we have a skull titled weird skull, a dagger, an amulet. Again, another staff, a lucky coin. There's lots of things here. Yes, here's some more examples of these items. So again, we see, we see a very similar pattern here. Potions, ingredients, crystals, coins, the skull. Here we have a shield as well. So maybe your war Locke also fights instead of just using spells. So you can include something like that as well. I also have some character examples if you'd like to do that as well. So this is a very sweet which character here? She has a little hat on with a little I design on her poncho. She looks like she would be an herbalists of some sort with all of these natural elements. This one is very sweet. So I will start, I'm going to be making the items in this class today. You are free to also have the character as well. If you have an idea, items, and also a character, Absolutely. You can go all out. First thing that I'm going to do for my inventory, I'm going to make the bag or this sort of satchel that my character will be carrying. I'm going to make this one very simple. It's not going to be to advance or detail since I'm gonna be making a lot of items today. So I will start by sketching my things here. I also have this reference image that we looked at in the beginning. I just have it on the bottom here that you can see just to remind yourself, what are some of the items that we looked at? I'm going to start with sketching it out. Not worrying about my lines just yet. Obviously might change the shape as I go along. It's trying to make some sort of satchel here, maybe just a small little purse that they hold us thinking about doing a backpack, maybe that's something you'd like to do. One width straps that they carry. It could be a crossover one that just goes right across their body. Or you can have ones that they hold kinda like a school bag, school backpack. It's up to you. Um, or you don't have to include this bag or purse at all. This is just an idea to also have in your inventory. Have the actual thing that they're holding all these items in. A staff is also acceptable even though can't really fit a staff into a backpack. But you can absolutely do something like that or something that they are wearing. I'm just going to do this simple shapes. So this is just the base of my satchel and then I'll start adding the lip over it or the flap that will able to open and close. I'm just focusing on the items today. If you'd like to do an environment on yours, you are totally welcome to. I'll add some straps. One coming along the one side. And I'll have one that kinda droops down to the back. All right. Here we have my little backpack satchel here. I'll move it down to the bottom so I can start drawing some more things. I'm gonna do some little ingredients here. In my little space. I'm going to try and fill up my page as much as I can with drawings today. I tried to do lots and lots of items. Some little, some big. Right now I'm going to use some mushrooms. Will be some little ingredients for potions. Something that this witch or war Locke will use. All right, Here I have a little cluster of mushrooms and I'm gonna make a couple more just so I'm able to fill up my page. If you do a couple of little designs, try to make a few more around in a different area of your page. So you have lots of space covered with a bigger design. So you won't be able to do that, but with just some small ones, you can just these little small mushrooms. I'm able to move them around and place them around my canvas here. For the few that do like Harry Potter, you can take inspiration from there. There are items that they have. They have lots of different specific textbooks, potions. If you'd like to take inspiration from that. Or video games. Video games is an awesome one for inventory. Are lots of Medieval, I guess sort of games that have potions, items from, or inventory of a character. Alright, so now I have some mushrooms there. I might copy, paste them and move them around as I go. But we'll do some more here. 3. Continuing Your Sketch: I'll do a witches are wizards hat. That'll be one of my larger shrines. I'll do gonna be a wavy little point here. I'm just doing it from the top. You can have my ellipse right around here. So it's almost like a figure eight of some sort. Here I have y, which is Hat. Bring it. Getting a little quill and an inkwell here. I'll do some little lines to show that there is writing. But I won't go into detail with this guy. Will just do the little jar. Or today. Can't I move this guy? Here we go. Just trying to rotate my inkwell over here. Some different poses around them as well. So some I have tilted to the left. I have tilted to the right of different varieties to the different angles. I have set up having some things right straight on the line. 4. Colouring Your Magical Objects: I think I'll start coloring instead of lining today. Want to add some color to my piece? I'm going to make a background. First. Let's background. And I'll have my color layer as well. I'll start with the hat here. Coloring in this hadn't a solid brown for now. And then I can go back and do some little highlights and shadows later. Again on this satchel, just adding some black color to it. For now. I'm going to do that to all of my items, not going to focus on one at a time. It's going to do all of them first. Then add all of my details afterward. Early falling knee strap I have here in my sketch. If you are coloring or lining after your sketch work. Remember you don't have to completely follow the design of your sketch. You can go a little over or make some changes. And such. Just a sort of rough though before you start with clean lines and always change it up. It doesn't have to be a permanent fix. Maybe I'll do a purple as well ink. I do have some more crystals on the opposite side, so maybe I'll make those red or ruby red. I think movies are really interesting at the gym. I'm like, well, I'm not sure what color I want my quill to BL have some some blue in there. I suppose. I'm some light blue. And then maybe some shadows. I don't want it to be completely white on to add some color to it. So I'll do a light blue. The white for the quilt might look a bit too bright on top of everything else. Don't want it to be too strong of having that little bit of blue in there. You could also use orange just to soften it out. It doesn't look as bright. Tones it down a bit. You ever have any white on your items? Maybe you want to try that out. Now, have my pot would have a navy blue color. So again, more blue to match with the quill. Always thinking about the temperature of my colors. So these are very cool, very cool. Look to it. Then I'll do my staff. I have a wooden stuff here. I'm going to grab a light brown color. I'm going to try and make a different Brown from my satchel and my hat. So I have some difference between the two or the three, I guess. Want them to look too similar. I want to have some different contrast to them. Making sure that if you have browns in your work, to have others as well, have some fun with warmer browns, cooler browns. This one is a cooler brown. I'm going to add a crystal here. You'll do a similar one to this teal. Be a little darker. I think I'll add a glow effect to the top of my staff here. Have a magical staff. It's binds will be a darker teal on here. You need to do those motions at the bottom as well. Zoom into those arms down some flat color. These bottles. So for this one I have a cork as the little top are here. Just made heard of a square squished cylinder as my cork. And for the other ones, I don't have a stopper here. It's just kind of open. Aim with this large jar. They're both open with Noah, no cover there, no lid. If you do end up finishing or coloring your inventory, you can start by doing some other fantastical sort of objects or items. I'm going to color in the glass first as a base and begin adding the bubbly liquid to color in the eyeball, I'm going to use a lighter green instead of white as it's submerged into the liquid. I'm making the pupil a dark green and applying a wet highlight to make it appear more realistic. The iris is also a more vibrant teal. To enhance this as well. I'm starting to add in a darker green for the bubbles and the bottom of the jar. Make sure to finish the base colors to your items as we'll be adding shadows and highlights next. 5. Adding Details to Your Items: Adding some highlights and shadows to my motion here, since I kinda got the base down for all of my items, I just thought I'd start with this one. Since this is the last one I worked on, I'm adding a few lighter streaks of color on top of the jar to enhance the glass appearance. I go to my little label here. I'm going to make it a cream part of label. Too bright. I'm toning it down with some orange and yellow. Zoom in here. All right, and then I'm going to add a darker green to this motion here. I'll have a brown cork top that I'll ask them maybe too too dark. If you have any sketchy lines that you no longer need or want, you can clean them up or erase them as you go. Moving along to the staff, I'm adding a few darker shadows to the wooden base, coloring in the grip. I'm using this darker brown to also go over the spirals and texture I made for the wood. On the large crystal topper of the staff. I'm going to add a bright glow to make this appear more magical. First, I'm adding a layer to put over top of my drawing and using a softer brush to apply a circle around the gym. Once I have a soft shape around it, I'll switch my layer blending mode to overlay and lower the opacity of it. Trying to figure out how I want this staff to glow of it like this. Then I'll start adding some shading the rest of my objects. First adding shadows to the creases of the hat since the light will not be hitting those hidden folds. Now use a lighter color for the highlight of the hat and you can pick any direction for where the light is shining from. Typically light shines from above. So I'll add highlights to the top and sides of the hat where the light may shine. Now, moving on to the mushrooms, I'm adding a warmer orange for the spots and a darker brown for the stem. The inside of the mushrooms won't see a lot of light. So this can be a slightly darker or warmer orange. I'll move on to the gems now and I'll first add a darker color to one of the angled sides. Adding more dimension to make it look realistic. Highlights or glows can be put in after if you want a more magical look to them. So thank you all for joining today. I hope you had a good time drawing these inventories and I'll see you later. Bye.
