1. Intro to Mod 3: be making basis. Right now, we're in module three and in Module Tree, we're actually gonna cover how to make beats. This is actually the beat making process and step by step, how to create beats. Really? This is in any dog because the principles on teaching are universal. So go ahead and roll in this class and make sure you also enroll in the whole Siri's. 2. The Beat Making Process : be making basis. What's going on, guys, in this lecture, we're gonna talk about to be making process. I just want to give it a brief overview. What? The processes And then from there in the next couple of lectures were gonna go into detail . Okay, so the process is simple. There's three steps. The first step is the build to be. The second step is to edit and arrange to beat. And the third step is to mix to beat. Okay, You have to do all three steps in order, have a professional sounding track. Okay, so let's talk about the building, the beat section or are stepped 1st 1st building the beat is all about getting all your ideas out. This is where you can be creative. Don't worry about trying to arrange it is a song or anything. This is where you just getting it all out. This go ahead and make his much music as you want and have fun. You don't were not wearing about it or trying to be be great or anything like that. You're just being you and creating your music. Okay? No. Uh, no, no. No pressure. You some saying so. just do that during the building. The beat phase. There's some certain elements that you have to follow procedure. You have to follow based on the dog that you're using or digital audio workstation you're using, um, and different things. We're gonna cover in the next videos, but just have fun. And during that step, Okay, Now, the second step is where you're going to clean up your mess. OK, so there might be instruments that you added or set our melodies or patterns that you added that maybe don't work well or jive well, with the mix or with the beat. That's where you're gonna take those out. Added those up. Make those things sound a little bit more polished. Okay, make it sound great. All right. And then you're gonna also do something called arranging that beat or arranging those those loops that you're creating with arrangement. This is all about taking your music and turn it into a song. OK, because if you're working with artists or even if you're working in TV and film, that needs to be a flow of distinct sections in your music. Okay, so that's what the arrangement process is all about. about counting bars, making sure you have the right bars for, you know, the intro, the verses, the hooks or the courses and al trolls and even the bridges there were going to all of that in the next lectures to come okay, and in the last section is to policy your your your record by mixing it, making sure that the levels of right and everything sounds sonically great. And if you if you skip any of these steps, say, if you you know, you build the beat and then you arrange the beat but the mixes whack, then that's going to kill the whole track or vice versa if you build the beat, but you don't arrange it right. But the mix is good just cause you have a good mix on on the beat. That's not ranged, right? It's not gonna make it sound good. You have to have. Make sure that sounds like a song on it Flows like a song. Okay, so every step of the beat making process is very important. And that's why I wanted to share with you those three steps. 3. Building The Beat: be making basis. All right, so now we're gonna cover how toe build the beat. All right, in theory is very simple. Really. What you're going to be doing is you want to make sure you have a loop selected. Usually, if you're just getting started, a four bar loop will will do, you know, saying and you can always do that by clicking up here and selected. How many bars you want again? This is not a tutorial. Course by, and I do have to show you that should come up here and select that. I'm doing a four bar loop and I got my BPM set the way I wanted to. All right, I have this keyboard up here so you can see what I'm playing as I'm planning, okay? And basically, you build a be all you're gonna do is you're gonna lay down or record one instrument on one track, and after that's properly recording and go to another instrument track and record another instrument. And you keep on doing that. And so you have a full fledge track built. Okay, Now the track you have to understand, it has to have drums, and it has usually have a bass sound, and it has to have some type of melody. All right, so that's what I'm a lay down right now. And, um, you know, I want you to practice doing this too. If you have a program is well, it doesn't matter which program you used, but just practices. So I'm gonna go ahead and lay down some type of piano first. Some people say you should, you know, lay down drums first. Some people say you later Melody in high site. Really? It doesn't matter as long as you stay inspired. OK, that's the whole key behind this is keeping your inspiration going and this Land it down. All right, So let me go ahead and get this ready. Um, right. - And if you mess up, that's fine. Just go it Go at it again. Uh, - just keep on building to be That's what I'm saying. You just can't keep on adding more more parts. 4. Editing The Beat: be making basis. All right, so now what we're gonna do is we're gonna actually talk about the editing process within, um, you know, the step of building the beat. Because when you're building a beat, um, especially if you're just getting started, you're gonna make some mistakes, and that's cool. All right, you're going to make those mistakes, But you gotta understand Well, how to edit him. Not the most common mistake that you know most people make when they first start off is that they're playing the moats off. When I say off, I mean that, you know, this is offbeat. So instead of it being right on point where it needs to hit based on the Metrodome based on the B PM's or beats per measure based on how you know how the beast lay it out sometimes you know the drum track might be off for the melody. Might be often there's a quick way to fix that. And that's true quantity ization. All right, now, in every program, you can quantifies your your track and again, this is not a tutorial. But, you know, in garage band, this is how you quantifies your tracks. So you know, grasp and you go to the scissors here. And technically, this is this is called the piano row or a step recorder right here. Okay. And this is a graphical display of what you just played here. So, for instance, if we were to zoom in here, you can see how, like, there's just give different lines right here. And these different lines represent different times within each measure. So this from one right here to to that measure oneness. And there's different time limps and spaces within this. And if you look at the notes, they're off compared to where they should be if if you match it everything on the grid, which was called a grid. So anyway, all you have to do to quantifies as you would select everything okay, And there's a quick way to do it, of course. And if you're using a Mac but old school ways, you would grab it highlighted like that. Not a quick way to do it is hot keys. You can push command A if you're using a Mac. Okay. But esta, that's a quick way. And you go over the time quantity, quantity ties. Now, these right here. Just represent different note Limps. Okay, so if you were to go from saved from right here, too, right here, that will be 1/2 a note if Right here. Right here. Be a whole note based on on the measure. So you're gonna play the whole note of a measure or 1/2 note of the measure where it comes down and goes down to the four for the note of four for the Notre major. 1/4 note. It's a different. They're just basically different notes. All right, note lifts and, you know, a rule of thumb here. And so it doesn't confuse you is whenever you're quantity izing the mawr complex, your pattern ISS, the higher the number is you're going to go all right. And the mawr simple or your pattern is the lower the number you're gonna go. Okay. That's just the basics of this. And so, where you don't get confused and like, Yo, I don't really understand it. This know that? Okay. So you would highlight everything and generally speaking, Okay, you're either going to use 1/8 or 1/16. Generally speaking usually awesome. More more simpler patterns I'll use the 1/8. But you know, say, if you're doing some high hats, you might do the 1/16. So we could still won over eight here. And when she clicks, are there everything is Qantas sized. And if I was to undo this, you see how something moved right there? You see that? It's snapped it to the greed. Okay, So you want to make sure you do that with all your tracks, make sure that all your tracks on point all right, you know this. Ah, because, like, kick, it's the kick drum right here, high like that and see how it like that messed up the track. So, technically, since this one's amore detailed pattern drum pattern, I might come over here, the 1/16 and I'm a highlight of do it like that and it's gonna snap it into the right place because it has more of a complex pattern. Okay. All right. So you're gonna do that with all your tracks. The next thing you want to make sure that you're doing as you're going for it is naming your tracks. And this is very important, because if you're if you don't name attracts. When you get into some other phases of the beat making process member, there's three phases building the beat, tracking out the beat and then mixing the beat that you're gonna get lost in the tracking phase or in the mixing phase if you don't properly name attracts. So I just give him some generic names. Um, this one is like our page ator. Call it art Sabei Sound. This is a high hat, and I know I know without listening to it, because I've been doing it for so long. It just look at him. I see the pattern. Okay, this is the high hat pattern. And I'm just gonna say lead and I must say synth Okay, so you make sure everything is is named and you want to organize everything to There's a reason why organize everything is for the drums with the drums, and you put like, um, the melody with the melody here. All right, All right. So this basically is getting everything ready for the tracking out process. You want everything to be, You know, just on point. Basically, now there is also I know there is a note that I kind of messed up on him and some play this before. You were quick. Actually, that's fine. I'm not gonna do anything else to this track. All right, So basically, yes, that's all you want to do. You want to make sure everything is quantity ized. All right? You want to make sure everything is, um labeled or named properly and properly organized. All right, That's a part of building to beat. Okay, there's just a editing aspect of it.
5. Building The Beat Exercise: be making basis. All right, so in this lecture, what we're gonna do is actually some action steps, Okay? You've already learned about the building, the beat, phase or process, and now it's time to put in action. So what I've done is I created four different instrument tracks that I'm going to give you to use to build your own beat. Okay, so this is the step is gonna take. So go to the pdf and click the link in it and download the those those tracks. What you're gonna download is going to be this boot camp sample beat. Okay? And you're gonna unzip it by double clicking on it. It's going to do that. And in the photos gonna pop open just like that. After you do that, you opened a photo and you got a highlight everything and drag it into your project window . OK? Now, um, if you're particular door digital audio workstation doesn't do it like that. All you have to do is go to foul and import and audio foul, and you could do it that way, But most of them, you could just drag it in. That's how I usually do it. all the time. So you just dragged into the project window. Always say, use existing tracks. I go ahead and import to tempo information, and it's going to go. Just come right in. So make sure you highlighted again and drag it to the very beginning of the of your track. If it's not already selected, make sure that you have your project is at 1 20 b p. M. Okay, this double click make sure that I'm selected. All right, then what you're gonna do is go ahead and highlight and create a loop. This is a four bar loop and basically go through the process of building are adding to this to this beat. Let's take a listen and see what we have here, and then we can go from there. All right, So you have a pretty good start there. You could you could add whatever you want. This is where you can pretty much just have at it. You know, whatever you want to add to the track, remember to keep it simple, though. But whatever you want to add to the track, if you want to kind of switch up something, maybe, you know, switch up a drumbeat or whatever. Maybe just keep the base. Maybe just keep the piano. Whatever you want to do. You could use every all of these samples at your own discretion. But just build a beat and get something created, all right?
