Mushroom Houses - Colour Pencils Art Project for Kids and Playful Adults

1. Class Presentation: Hello, I'd spent an underlay. I'm an artist, surface pattern designer at that teachers that don't denote that you're Canada. I'd love to create niches by an art. By the end of this class, you will be able to use different colored pencil stick needs, such as food coloring, using different values of the same color, creating gradients. And you also get media when layering. And of course, we will apply all those techniques in our final class project. So create our own imaginary mushroom clouds. I hope you will enjoy this class and can't wait to see you inside. 2. Class Project: Your project for this class, will be to create a colour pencils illustration of a mushroom house. Once you are ready, don't forget to share your mushroom house in the project gallery just below this video, I will be happy to discover what you will create and the provide feedback and help if you need it. 3. Materials: The materials for this class are very simple. You don't need to make any expensive investment. And you probably have all of those already at home. You need a sheet of paper or sketchbook. I will draw on a sheet from this mixed media sketchbook. Second, you need a graphite HB pencil and an eraser for the initial sketch. And third, of course, colored pencils. Let's keep it simple as this class is for kids and playful adults. You can complete this whole project with the Crayola color pencils you probably already use at school, or any other set of color pencils. If you wish to know what kind of color pencils I'm using for this class. This is the box of the color pencils I'm using: 72 premium oil-based colored pencils from the brand Art-n-Fly. But you don't need to have those. You can go with what you already have. Notice that you also have access to four resource documents, which you can download from the resource section of this course. The first document is a sheet for experimenting with different colored pencils techniques before we dive into the actual project. The second, the third and the fourth documents are inspiration sheets. You can find on them some pictures of mushrooms. Those are photography s coming from unsplash.com and Pixabay. Then you have some different models for mushroom houses that I have prepared for you and the different designs for windows and doors. You can use them as support if you want to try something different or go completely with your own inspiration, your own ideas. And that's all. Now, let's start with some colored pencils experiments using the sheet I have prepared for you. Or, if you don't have the possibility to print it, You can also use a page from your sketchbook or just a blank sheet of paper. 4. Five Colour Pencils Experiments: Before diving into our art project. Let's make some playful experiments with our color pencils. In the first experiment, I invite you to fill an area with scratchy lines. For this, you can use the sharp tip of the pencil and you don't have to be very accurate for filling the space. You can leave white marks between the lines. You can change the direction of the strokes if you wish. We have this uneven, scratchy texture, which can be also interesting when we want to have this result. For the second experiment, Let's try to fill an area with smooth and even colouring. To achieve a smooth even colouring, I'll give you a secret. Treat your pencil as a brush. Hold it tilted at about 30 degrees angle. And colour not with the tip, But we the side of the lead. And now you'll have two possibilities. The first possibility is you just go in one direction with a light touch. And the second possibility is... you make long smooth ovals without lifting the pencil from the paper and tighten those ovals up, kind of making many overlapping ellipses. In our third experiment, let's vary the pressure we apply on the paper when we draw with our pencil. You see I have prepared a few rectangles with numbers to measure approximately the pressure we apply. First, we make a very, very light, almost invisible colouring like a soft caress on the paper. For this, use a very, very light touch in a way that you can barely see the color. For pressure number 2, we will use the weight of the pencil, but we will not put pressure on. It should be just a little stronger than the color in the first rectangle. For rectangle number three. This time, we'll put a little bit of pressure on our pencil using the weight of our hand. Number four will be a firm intentional pressure. Pressure number five is as hard as you can press, but without breaking the pencil. And you can, eventually apply a second layer of color if you want to darken the value. In experiment number 4, we will create some gradients. Let's go from dark to light. Start by applying a lot of pressure in the beginning. And then lighten it step-by-step till you have a very, very light color which corresponds to a pressure number one. And now let's do the opposite. Let's go from light to dark. Start by applying very, very light pressure. And go stronger and stronger till you achieve the pressure number five. Do that always step-by-step in a very progressive way. In our fifth experiment, let's play with layering and color mixing. Choose two colours. Apply a smooth, even coverage with your first color and then on the top, apply a second color. But always in a smooth and even way. This will give you an idea of how the colors blend. Then try with two other colors. And why not more than two colors? Just keep in mind that, with pressure number 4 and 5, the color mixing will be much more difficult. That's why if you want to mix colors, I recommend you to privilege the light pressure from one to three. I hope you enjoyed these experiments and I hope also they helped you to get more familiar with your color pencils and the different effects you can achieve with them. 5. Sketching the Mushroom House: Let's start by sketching our mushroom house with very light pencil strokes. The first step will be to draw the stem or the stalk of the mushroom. It looks a bit like a long skirt. A little larger at the bottom. Then draw a curved line larger than the upper part of the stalk. And to join the edges of this curved line to the stalk. And stop when your line touches the stalk at each side. This will be the lower part of the cap. Now start a little lower, again from the stalk. And draw the cap of the mushroom. Like a dome or a big bowl turned upside down. Instead of a chimney. For this mushroom house, I will draw another smaller mushroom on the top left side of the cap. You can add some curved lines, under the cap of those two mushrooms to show a little bit the texture underneath. Then let's draw a ring or a skirt around the stem. I will use this one in order to mark the second floor of our mushroom house. You can erase the pencil marks which are no longer useful. Then think about what kind of pattern would you like to have on the top of the cap? I will put some big dots and exaggerate one of those big dots in order to transform it into a big window on the roof of my mushroom house. Let your imagination flow and decides what kind of elements would you like to put on this house? I decided to add two more smaller windows on each side of the big window. Then I will complete with some more additional dots on the cap of the big and the small mushroom. And now what about if we started adding some windows on the stem of our mushrooms? You can decide of the shape of those windows and maybe the decoration of their frame. I feel also inspired to put some marks on the stem and to make them look like decorative stones on the wall of this mushroom house. Then let's add the door. Think about the shape and the design you wish to give it, as it will influence the style of your house, as well as all the decorative elements you put on. I would like to add a little bell hanging from the top of the door. These little elements help so much to tell a story. Who will be the guest that will pull on the string and ring the bell. What about some stones in front of the house? I will add some more elements in the environment a little later. Let's first finish with the house. I think a big window over the front door will look great. And why not sketching a pot with flowers on this window. Then some more of those decorative stones on the wall. Leading to the front door, I will put a path of some irregular pavements. And on the left side of this path, I would love to see some flowers. Also, some bigger flowers growing beside the house. I like to keep them very simple. A few petals on a stem looking upwards. Now completing with some leaves. Beside the big flowers near the path, I will add some smaller flowers that will fill the empty space and bring some more variety to the garden. On the other side of my mushroom house, I would like to draw another smaller mushroom with a slightly different shape. Some berries. And why not another even smaller mushroom. I like the idea to put more berries in the environment of this house. So I decided to put some more on a longer stem beside and behind the mushrooms. If you want to draw a plant or a stem behind the mushroom house, start from the ground, then stop your line When you touch the mushroom cap and continue further after the cap, following the direction of the stem of the plant. Then you can draw additional leaves, stems, vines, berries, and whatever you wish When you think you are ready, Look at the overall sketch and decide if you wish to put some more elements. O, I have still to fill the lower right corner. Let's put some grass on the foreground, then some more stones in the lawn. And now, I think we are pretty ready with our sketch. Let's dive into colouring. 6. Colouring the Mushroom House: I will start coloring my illustration with the stem of the mushroom. I will begin by applying this light salmon color. Keep in mind that you can always darken a light or a medium color. You can always go on the top of this light salmon color, with a darker brown, for example. If you do the opposite, if you start by applying first the dark color, it will be much more difficult and even impossible to go back and to have clean light areas. That's why my advice is to start coloring by applying first your light or medium colors. Try to color evenly and just block one layer of the first color you have chosen for the stem. Once you have finished with the first layer, choose a darker pencil, which you can apply on the top and have an interesting effect of those two colors mixing together. In order to create a shadowy area on the side of the stem or under the cap continue by applying a third layer of your brown. Or choose even a darker brown if you wish, If you want to have more contrast. if you want to make, more visible some of the lines, use the sharp tip of your pencil. This will make pop up some of your contour lines. Then follow the same process for colouring the cap. Block the first layer of a light or medium, pink or red, color. Then the additional layers of darker colors 00:02:25.730 --> 00:02:31.500 on the top, in order to shade and give more volume to your drawing. Now just go ahead with the same steps for covering all the other elements of your drawing. Step 1. Apply your first layer of a light or a medium color. Step two, put additional years of one or several other colors. Step three, draw all the small elements or textures with a sharp pencil using the tip of the lead. You can also create gradients, as we did in our Experiments in the beginning of the class, and create a smooth gradation between dark and light colors. If you want to watch me colouring or to color with me, You can do that. But you can also decide to go by yourself and you don't have to use exactly the same colors. You can go for your own preferences. and follow your artistic intuition. 7. Final Thoughts and and Thank You: I invite you to experiment with different shapes and colors.
