About This Class

In this course I am so excited to share with you how I use the MPC Live 2 to create simple beats in sequences.  I will be going through my thinking of creating one sequence just focused on a sample.  Next, I will go through how to add a second sequence and combine the sample with a combination of drums.  Then, I will go into how to create a third sequence with a different combination of drums.  Lastly, I will go into how to create a fourth sequence with just drums alone and then how to put the sequences together in song mode and then to export your creation.

1. Skill Share MPC 2 LIVE 2 Lesson 1: Hello, welcome to this course with this skillshare version is going to focus on using the NPC live two to create a basic beat. This could be a beat for the background of your workout video, exercise video, for example. What we're going to be doing is first we're going to have challenges. Like for example, to make a introduction sequence. Then I'm going to challenge you to add drums sequence two. I'm going to challenge you in sequence three to add a different type of drums. And then sequence four is just drums alone. And then we're going to look at song mode, putting them all together. And then the last step is exporting it. All right, if you down for the challenge, here we go. Okay, so I'll walk you through my thinking. My thinking is, okay, how do I turn it on? I'll look for the button right back here, Power it on. Okay, because I want to make it connected to the software. So I'm going to have to plug in this USB connection back over here, and I'm going to plug it in there. And then I can have it working, right? So I'm going to open up the NPC program right there, clicking on the NPC preferences input input. It means it's my microphone, the USB, and then the output is the speakers for now. And that's good loading a drum kit. Remember down here there. Let's go with number one, Double click it. Remember, you could click over here, those six dots to use your keyboard. Okay, if you don't want to do the controller. All right, so I'm going to have to disconnect the wire. 1 second on the software. How do you change the sequence name? Right here. Just double click and melody there. It's done already. Let's do sequence number two to be Melody and drums, Drums one. Then let's do number three. Could be Melody, drums two. And let's see number four as just drums alone. Drums alone. Okay, so now we have the four different parts there and let's see if it on the Okay. All right, so I'm going to walk you through what I did to get to accomplish the goal, which is to turn it on. So I powered it on and now I'm here on my computer. I'm going to go to MPC. And I'm going to, I loaded up on an empty project, but now I want to connect the hardware to the computer. So what I'm going to do now is I'm going to go here to the, I'm going to push the main button. All right, I'm going to actually go Empty Project. Okay, so I want to empty project. Now at this screen, I'm going to go to the house. And then from the house, you see this, this chip here. It's like so man, okay, this is like a chip here. If you touch that, it becomes controller mode. With controller mode, it's going to send a signal here to the computer. It's looking for a computer. I'm going to go here to NPC. Now I notice that it's picked it up. How do I know that? If you look at the screen here, it's showing that sequence. I'm going to push the button to see if it has it. Put the speaker on. There's a switch at the back here. I'm going to put it on. The speaker on. Okay. Now I'm going to go here to the program to make sure the output so command is a shortcut. Input is none, okay? Output lie, two input could be, let's use it as the speakers of the computer, okay? All right, so let's check it out. Master volume up. Okay, so now we have both things going on here, loading the hardware and the software. Okay, so that was the first mission is turning on your program and loading up a drum kit. Now if I was on here, I can go to Shift. Menu is a quick way to find your expansion packs. From now I'm going to go to expansions and I can find another one. Remember the four squares, that's for drum kits. I'll load drum number two, replace, there you go. I should go back to Main, hit Main, and go to drum kits here. Switch it up. Now this is number two. All right, I'll just show you once again on the software here. What I did was here melt and Miti put in the first loop right here, okay. And then I did bounce to track. So you can go here, edit, seek track, and you can bounce to new audio tracks. So it will send it out to right here. And then the miti will basically become muted. Okay, see how it's muted there. Muted. 2. Skill Share MPC LIVE 2 Lesson 2: All right, so the next objective is going to be for you to find a sample, a melody, to be like the introduction to the first track one that you're creating. What you could do is look in your samples for that. So let's look at how you'd go about it, right? The first step would be type in samples. Look for which kind of melody you want. So it could be a piano, it could be like trumpets. Just something I like the introduction of the starting of your. Okay, so we're going to look at that. That's your objective. To find a melody and hopefully put it in the grid or you can decide to put it in the audio, okay? All right, here we go to create sequence one. To change the sequence one name to melody. That's it. Okay, With the actual device, I'm going to go to Melody and do it. Okay. And then we'll look at how to do it on the software as well. All right. How would you go about finding a sample and putting it in the first part of your grid? What I would do now is I would I would actually go to assign samples. Because when you load a kit, it comes with samples as well. Now I'm going to scroll and search for a sample. See there's different loops here. There's a melodic, I like that one, so I'm going to put that melodic loop right up here on pad the top number 13, right here. So when I push it, when you get pack I messaged them and I asked them, is it royalty free? For the most part, it should be good to go. When I'm using that loop, I can just assume that it's clear and ready to go. I'm going to go to Main. I'm going to go here. Since it's only melody, I'm going to try to put on the melody in. If I want to see how long the melody is, I'm going to go to sample it. The quick trick way was menu. I'm going to hit this pad because sample it's there. You see how these different menu options are corresponding to the pad. If I want to go to the sample edit, I could just hit that. Now I'm in the sample editor, I can see it's about, this loop is about 5 bars because it's right there, The five number or six. What I'm going to do is I'm going to change my bars here to six, back to main. See the bars here? 56. Okay. Zooming in there now it's six now when I do my beat. So I'm going to go back to main here. Main grid, and I'm going to go to record. Play Start. I'm, I'm going to hit this button and I put it into late, so I want to put it back maybe. Yeah. You can use this data dial to change where beat was supposed to start from that, 813. So let's go here. Play Start. So I'm going to have to maybe put like 7 bars because I noticed it got cut off there. So let's check it out here. Okay, I don't know what's going on with that, but let's send it out. Bounce it out to audio track, pencil. Bounce to, It's not sample the whole track. Bounce the audio track. Let's see, now it's an audio track, so I'm going to check it out like this. And I can even fade in and out there is seven, so I'm going to go here, click here, and fade out, Fade out. Here's introduction, the first part of the song or the beat. Okay, so that's done. So now I have my first part of my song sequence. One melody, right? 3. Skill Share MPC LIVE 2 Lesson 3: Now we have the melody. At the first one, the track is melody. So second introduction, now we're going to add the drums Version one you can have high hats and then maybe the next one we could take high hats out. Once again, the objective is go to track two, put your melody again and put some random drums. And remember my thinking is, let's do a first bad first drop. Who cares? If people laugh and make fun, just do it and let's see what happens. Okay, there we go. Let's go. All right, here we are at the view. So I want to come back to the normal main right here. Now with main, what I'm going to do now is sequence was melody sequence. Now I want to turn the data dial and go to the drum one. Now I'm going to do practice. Okay, that was just a random practice. And now it's not going to go until you arm it so that red doll has to be on. If it's off, nothing's going to record into the grid. Even if I pushed for cord and I did play start. Guess what? Nothing's going in. The problem was I didn't go to arm it. Now it's armed. Now I'm going to put the first layer which is the velit again, how do I know it got in? I'm gonna look down and there it is right there. See I messed up there. It's okay. Now, over Dub and let's see if he goes in. What's happening is that it's changing to like it's automated thing because it's on time. Correct. Let's go here to mean let's turn time right here and then it doesn't like quantize the notes. Let's go back here and I'm going to do it again. What I'm going to do is I'm going to select all with that selector and then I'm going to go here, select all of it. Shift cut, it's all gone. Now I'm going to do it again. We du, I had an extra kick, I can dot that. Just bad like that in the side for me. That's good enough. What I'm going to do now is I'm going to shoot it out to an audio track. How do I do that? I'm going to go to bounce the audio track. Now I have my second part. I'll check it out here, and if it's too loud I can select it and go level and volume down counter clockwise and check it out now. All right, so now I have the second sequence for the track. All right. Now let's go back to, that was the objective, right? To create drums and add a melody. 4. Skill Share MPC LIVE 2 Lesson 4: So the next objective is to have three sequence number three, the same melody with a different kind of drums. You can even do a different way, you could do it with eight weights. It's up to you. You can be creative. Remember, let it be sloppy, let it be messy, let me make mistakes. That's how we're going to learn. Okay, here we go. All right. Now for this one, I'm going to go to sequence three, which is the first mission to sequence three. Now, play chart. Nothing is there, but I feel like being creative and I feel like, you know what, I want to put some eight weight, so I'll sign samples. I'm going to clear everything that's here, so that's why I'm clearing it. So I want to replace that eight a weight. I don't need the shaker. Okay? So I'm going to go, I'm going to change the kick. I need a eight a weight. So I'm going to look here for eight weights. Okay, here's a kick. Eight weight. Okay. So I'll go here. Put that one and see. Okay, actually I'm going to go to search for a different 808 shift shift brows and down here brows and I'm going to type in 88, do it. I'll get nothing right There's kits but I'm going to go here a samples and now I'm going to search for the one I like. I have it on green here, so it's going to go into that pad. I like that one. Touch it in, I'll push it in now. I'll go back to Maine here and I'll check it out. Let's see. Okay. So now I'm going to go, I can go back to track one, doesn't matter here. So I'll put the first one in. So I just did wits. And that's my second sequence. So I can turn order off and I can mess around with the. Let me see if its I think I'm going to take these Eta weights out and do it. Do the kick and the snares together. So let me get all of them. Shift cut and you do them together. So I'm going to do it again. I think that was an extra. All right, so I'm going to bounce that, go to main track, bounce audio track. And let's look at it. If it's too loud, remember touch it, level down out. All right, now that is done, right? So we did a second sequence. The third one is a melody drums version two. I'm going to ask you to do the drums by itself. 5. Skill Share MPC LIVE 2 Lesson 5: For this last part is going to be your drums by itself. We're going to just put any drums, you can do a new drum sequence the way you want to do it, it's up to you. You can put new sounds, it's totally up to you. All right, here we go. All right. The new objective is going to be to do a fourth sequence which is only going to be drums by itself. If you ever watch a exercise video, sometimes they have different parts. This would be the part where the drums by itself, I want to sequence four. I don't really need any audio tracks right now. I'm going to go back to Midi. Now. At mid now, I could do a new drum kit so I can do the change the kit, for example, here. So let's just by itself, I'm on drums, so let's go to record Play. Start. Here we go. Let's check it off from the grid. I have an extra snare there, so I'm going to zoom in. What I did was I hit the microphone. The magnifying glass. Magnifying glass. And then from the magnifying glass I can as take that off. It still feels like this time cracked on. Let me check it out. Mean ten quicks off? That sounds so fast. The two kicks at the starting. So I'm gonna go back here to delete those. That sounds cool. But I'm gonna take those kicks away. Start off with this sneer. Okay. Now I want to balance that again. Put it on track four. Yeah, I'll balance this truck to audio track. Let's check it out. Audio five, here we go. Okay, let's go to song mode and put them all together. Let's go here to menu and see where song mode here, let's put the melody by itself in. 6. Skill Share MPC LIVE 2 Lesson 6: All right, for this objective is going to be for us to go to song mode and put the different sequences all together. So the melody and then melody with drums one, melody with drums two, and then drums alone. Then you can mess around with it like how many repeats you want. But that's the objective. Okay, here we go. I'm here now in song mode. What I'm thinking now is I just push insert. I want four parts, That's a basic. I want change that to one melody. The melody will play first and then the sequence two will play, which is a melody in our first type of drums. And then here is going to be melody and drums, another one and then last one, drums by itself. So let's see how it sounds. Play Start just by itself. Let's see it's playing that one because it's red there, right? So I'll have to wait till it gets to the starting there and that's too long so. So that's it plays the first one it goes the next one, that's our first basic beats done. We can mess around with it and make it longer so we can have the drums repeating twice and then we can have it back to melody. Melody, with the drums that one plays, you can mess around with it there. And then let's see how it sounds. Now this is a melody by itself. See that's too long to change that. You're gonna play two times because you have it on two, right, repeat. So my problem right now is with the first one being too long, 7 bars. So let's go here to Maine. See what's going on with this one. I know it's going to play only the audio here. It's going too long it, Let's cut it down to six, or maybe we'll keep that four. What you can do now is let me zoom out if you want to make it shorter so you grab it from the bottom and you can bring it in. Let's see now, song mode. Let's go menu song mode. Let's check it out now, that's awesome. Perfect. 7. Skill Share MPC LIVE 2 Lesson 7: All right, so now the last project is going to be to export the song that you created here. Okay, so last step is going to be exporting. So here's export. Click on it wave. If you want to do it for like the Gum road or for bandcamp, you're going to have to do Flack, I think. Sorry. What I know is band camp asked for flat. You can call it whatever you want and then you can send it out. Hopefully you can find it. That's the last objective, which is to find your exported creations. Okay, and to export the sequence. Al right, so thank you and have a nice day.
