1. Presentation: in these schools will prepare a campus planning from scratch. Preparing a campus from scratch is a beautiful and intimate way to connect to the painting that we're going to make, and I always prepared supports for my paintings. My name is Mauricio de Angelis, and I'm, a traditional and digital artist based in London, have been painting in oil for more than 25 years now, concentrating on realistic portraiture as sea life painting. You can, obviously by a ready mate support. But if you're interested in understanding our canvas, Panelists made, This is the course for you. There are several ways repair, Converse, ready for painting. And in this goes, I'll teach you to glue a campus to a wooden panel and then prime one canvas with a traditional Jesse primer and another campus with more more than option, which is a clear just we're going to explore the materials that we need and want to understand the difference when applying both just primers. If you're interested in traditional oil painting, you might find it useful to watch also my other cause complete guide to realistic oil painting. But I go through the entire workflow in order to achieve realistic paintings by Let's Stuff From the Basics Now and prepare our very own campus panel for our future masterpiece. Let's get going.
2. Mounting Canvas to Panel: If we want to mount a canvas toe a panel, we need to decide which panel we're going to use. It can be any wooden board as long as the surface is flat. I normally use on MDF panels, which is different here. I m the officer quite cheap and affordable. Wooden board, many using construction. He comes in different with this one in particular is syrup going six millimeters deep? Any probably cost me less the £1. Then we have this untreated campus. This is linen. That's a quite large piece of fabric. I don't remember the prize exactly, but I think this one was about £40 which is kind of $55. I guess they're different qualities on the market. So you might find something cheaper down to your local off store. So we want to glue the canvas onto this MDF panel. But first of all, we need to cut a piece of linen. You want to place the canvas pondering the direction off the fibers you can actually see the fight was here, So when I placed the panel, I want to double check. It is oriented according to the fiber direction. Then you when I leave a good margin. Can I do the same for this side? When you've got that, you can cut it. You can use a pair of scissors or cutter. Basically, you can castle on the line, then the other side, and that's it. Now, for your own convenience, you can prepare more the one panel into one session so you can make a few boards at ones because the campus was folded and stay on the shelf for some time. You can see there some foods and wrinkles, and this campus is particularly dry. If we put some blue in the panel and then stick the campus to it, and if we leave it over night with some books on top, the wrinkles would probably go. But because I like to do things, probably I'm going to iron the canvas at the end of the day is just a piece of fabric. So it's a cloth, basically, so our yearnings no harm. I can also do a bill on the other side. They now look better. And to be honest, I feel better as well. I'm more confident. I think it's fair to do this. I'm more in control, and that's very important when you pain, you want to be in control off the elements of handling with you can get the wet because of this steam. But that's fine. And it's it Now we want you blew the campus on the panel we're going to use. This glue here is called PV a. Not the brand by the kind of blue. It's a very common wood glue, and it's probably sold everywhere. There's no in our material, so if you go to the hardware store, you would probably pay £3 of something. So we start gluing the MDF. Don't be too generous with this clue. You want to use a fair amount. The most important thing is around the full sides and corners. I kind off palm nuts. Masterpiece. So you place it like that. Now you can use a spatula. What piece of cardboard you don't need to buy these. You don't have it. You basically want to apply the glue evenly. You want every part off the panel covered, and now you place the campus or with the panel, and then you simply apply some pressure like these. Don't be scared, because this is pretty more by you. Take some time to settle, so if you place it wrongly, you can kind of remove it and reapply. If you put too much glue, it would transpire. Will penetrate the fire best. It's not big issue, but that's why you don't want to put too much blue. I just want to reinforce, decide and moldy actually, the bed. Now I'm going to wash the spatula and remove the excess glue. And when it's try, I want to press it against the MDF beat more, so I'm super sure e ideas. Well, this is done. Now if you leave it for about five minutes, so superficial blues probably dry. You can see that some of Lewis weathered out back again. This is no problem, so you can flip the MDF, and you might want to remove the canoe in excess. I normally play some paper or newspaper, and then you can take some heavy books. And because I'm also a medical illustrator, have got this beautiful collection of anatomical publicists. You can place three or 45 something around three or four killers. Otherwise you can place a park off six bottles of water. The most important thing is that the wife has to be uniforms. So dump it something in the middle off the panel, but something that can cover, then die area. So maybe books is the best thing. But make sure you put some paper or newspaper because if there somebody, we will stand your books and it's it you living like that overnight. Now we have two options. You can fold the remaining canvas and cannot wrap the MDF panel, or you can cut off the flaps. Its up to you, Really, I think that if you planning to frame the panel when the painting is finished, you can just cut off the excess canvas. Otherwise, you can fool the flaps and then glue them on the back off the panel. In this demonstration, we're going to cut the canvas. This is another part of my head. You can see this car in a different way. I don't mind that before we use the cata, I want to warn you about the danger off the stool. Don't underestimate out and focus on what you're doing. It's a very dangerous stool, so be very careful. So if the cat is not sharp, enough you might want to consider to split the blade, the keys to press firmly on the panel and then cut the cameras. You want to kind of cut at a slight angle against the side of the panel, Press firmly and then cut. And there you go. We have got a nice and clean panel. We have now two panels treated in the very same way for the panel on the left. We're going to use liquid. It's clear, Jess. Oh, and for the panel on the right, a traditional Windsor in new toe white. Just primer. We're going to use a large flat brush for the clear Jessa and the roller for the primer. In the next lesson, we're going to start from the traditional just so fast.
3. Applying Traditional Gesso Primer: in this lesson, we're going to apply a traditional just so primer from wind zone. Using these kind of justice is the one that is normally applied to canvas. So if you go to an art shop and see a white canvas, it means that has been prime with this kind of just so I normally use a plastic plate and a spoon and with the brush, also prime the sides off the panel. And I do that to protect the panda itself from moisture, but also for consistency, as if I a private the top is going to probably sides as well. - Then I put a generous amount of just on the plate, just so it tends to dry quickly. So don't living for too long that we rode the roller, make sure justice covering the roller evenly. We simply apply a fast coat. You have to press the roller against the panel as the campus is not smooth. So you want the gesture to penetrate the fibers we apply and be more Jessa, - and we have done with the first pass. Generally speaking, you mind between two and six counts, and this depends on the kind of gesture that you have, for example, in the Windsor and Newton amusing. It is said that two coats are enough. By my experience, offing forwards Better I'll have are the keys to get a team lay off. Just you can wait until dries. Let's say often our or use a blow dryer as I do. That's up to you because this is a water based just so there's no harm. Using a blow dryer, I alternate hot and cold air. Now I apply a second coat, doing things in exactly the same way as before, and I want to be a particularly attention. If there some spots, they're not confident Jessa. - Then dry it off again. So going to speed up these for the fed and forth coat, and this is it. Now you living lined up for 24 hours, so it dries out completely. Any rex is a bit the day after when it's completely dry. We want to gently send the surface with a not too rough sending paper, just a tiny big You don't want to apply any force. You just want to remove some roughness. You can actually feel it. Passing your hand on the panel and then you send over the spots where you feel a difference , and that's it. The preparation of our traditional just a panel is not completed, and it's ready for painting in the next chapter. We're going to use a clear just instead and understand our two best apply it.
4. Applying Clear Gesso Primer: in this lesson, We're going to apply the liquid. It's clear, Jess. Oh, but instead of using the roller, we're going to use a large, flat brush. And this is because thes kind of justice much more liquid compared to the white gesso primer and the rollers punch would be a deal as it would absorb it again. We use a plastic plate. You give you a good shag to the bottle. We have to imagine this clear, just like a body scrub. You know, in those bottle there, some sort of fine particles like sand or something like that. So this gesture has got some quite fine tiny particles inside that would give a very specific and actually satisfying feeling when it's trying. It looks similar to the glue that we use previously, and that might be some new chances that they share some materials. Maybe it looks white now, but it will be transparent when he drives out. So, using a flat brush, we applied a fast count. You can see that I kind of want digested gay inside the fibers off the campus. So I want to brush in different direction also, and I can prime decides us well, and the first coat is done. In this case, I wouldn't use the blow dryer, and I wouldn't leave it to dry overnight. This is because with this just so two codes can be enough, as we need to send the surface from one kowtow another. It's better to wait until the day after, because if you send when the surface is no 100% dry, you will get a different effect. That's the reason why it's better to wait. So the day after you can see there's completely transparent and it's quite rough to the touch, so we want to send to the bed. As for the white just so not too much and without applying too much force and now the second coat we applied the clear just in the same way, do also the sides and that's it. The preparation of our panel prime of the clear Jesse's, completed in the next final lesson. I'll show you the options you have if you want to start painting
5. Oil Painting Creation Flowchart: this lesson has been extracted from my other course Complete Guide, Realistic Goal painting. And he shows a flow chart diagram for the creation of an oil painting. You can see that the second and third step self made him prime ing. It's about the schools. So if you would like to understand what comes after the preparation of a canvas panel, you might want to concede that watching that cause. So let's have a look at this flow chart are realistic. Painting involves a great control over his creation. If we want to achieve, for example, a certain effect, we need to know how to do it. It's very important to understand how to proceed, what we have to do for each step, the materials that we need. And then this lesson. I'll show you the options we have if we want to create an old painting. In fact, there are many different ways to make an oil painting according to your preference. Your taste, what you like, even where you come from, your going to make a specific choice. So let's have a look at the options we have. Please know that we're going to start with the subject already shows. And so in this graph, we're going to skip these progression process and sketching over eight years. First of all, we need to decide if we want to paint on canvas or panel. You can start from a ready made can vessel panel weighing him by an untreated campus of panel In using Jesser primer. It's entirely up to you personally. I always prepared the partners by myself. Whatever option you choose, the next step is stone in tonin is a procedure where we tone, so we color the white campus with brown paint. This is a very good way to be able to judge value in color as the meat tones are established from the very beginning. After toning, you make the drawing again. There are many ways to make a drawing. Generally speaking, they're free. The Freehand drawing, which is, as the name say's a form where the artist makes a drawing, depending totally upon the eye hand coordination. So you see you elaborate, and then you draw. Drawing is always challenging, and it's definitely need a lot of practice. But once you educate your eyes in your hand, it's a quite rewarding technique. Then we have the great method. This method is used when you want to reproduce something at the same size or difference cow . So, for example, if you have a fighter or print and you want to use this method, you would make agreed over the reference and then make the same greed onto your paper and start drawing within the squares so you're going to draw what's going on. Insiders lose squares, which make things a lot easier. Then we have tracing. You can trace an existing image like a fighter, where you can trace your own drawing. Tracing means that you're going to transfer an image onto your cambers or paper. This technique is normally used. You want to keep the surface of your campus or panel as clean as possible. And for me, this is a must. I can knock her with a messy panel, right, so we have a drawing down, and now it's time for an under painting. Another painting is a kind of godlike, normally painted with the same color used for toning. Sketching out an under painting helps understand what the shadows and dark areas off the compositions are, and it gives an indication of volumes and shapes. Once the under painting is done, we have again three main options. We can make up, please I or grease L Grease on in Italian, which is an under painting but this time painted in shades of grey. So using black and white oh paid colors. Otherwise, we can use or pay colors, but using this time the full range of colors we have rather than just black and white. Or we can paint Allah Prima, also known as wet on wet, in which lay is a wet paint are applied on top of other lays or wet paint. Normally, alla prima paintings are finished with the one painting session, as it's a quite fast executing method. Best only I'm not found on this technique now. If you went for a graze I or your pay colors, you can move on to the glazing process. Glazing is a technique that consists of applying transparent layers of colors over and opaque painted surface. It is used for adding or changing the colors off the composition and for adding details after several sessions of glazing, you would eventually are the final touches, which is about fixing things here and there, adjusting tones and adding final details. This final step is very important. And when I'm about to finish a painting, I normally sit in front of the easel and I make a written list off the details that I want to fix. Then the very last step is protecting your painting from the environment and leveled the towns to look all the same using a final varnish. And this is it. If you opted for Allah, prefer painting, you'd skip the glazing face and go straight to the final varnish. This court is not completed. I hope you guys enjoyed it. I wish you all the best and see you next time. Bye bye.
