Do you want to bring your watercolours to the next level? Using coloured pens, pencils and markers can add fun , decorative layers to your artwork and designs without detracting from your painting. You can let your imagination go, enhancing your work by adding colourful shapes, lines and patterns.

In this class we will explore the effects of different media eg coloured pencils, acrylic pens and gel pens on our paintings of watercolour fruit and vegetables by creating a swatch page.

I will take you through the process and if you are a beginner you can follow me at each step. You will be able to apply this technique to other projects eg abstract and landscapes.

In this class you will:

  • Practise painting fruit and vegetables with watercolour.

I am an enthusiastic creative from painting to sewing. I love designingsurface patterens, usually in watercolour and then developing the pattern digitally with Affinity. These designs end up as fabric and soft furnishings which I sell in my Spoonflower shop. Nature is always my influencer! I live in an area of beautiful countryside and it never fails to inspire me!.

My second passion is sewing which I have done since I was a young girl. I create unique bags, in all shapes and sizes, made from vintage fabrics and slow-stitched. These I give as gifts to my friends and family.

1. Welcome: Hello, I'm Ruth. Thank you for joining me and welcome to my class. I didn't spice to your watercolors embellishing with colored pens and pencils. I love developing surface patterns using watercolor and then adding my own personal touch with colored pens and pencils. I sell these designs on fabrics, soft furnishings, *****, and much more in my online shops. This class is all about adding colorful texture layers to your watercolor art using a variety of media, such as gel pens, acrylic pen, brush pens, and color pencils. We will do this by creating a colorful decorative layer using lines, dots, shapes, and a bit of imagination. By the end of the class, I'm sure you will. We're able to use this technique with confidence and apply it to any of your artwork. The next lesson, we will have a look at the class project. Let's go. 2. Project: For your project, I would like you to choose a piece of fruit or vegetable. Something colorful are unusual and fill a page with watercolor paintings, decorated, unembellished with colored pens and pencils. Paint a promo variety of angles. Paying attention to the shapes. Cut your chosen peace and to smaller sizes. Have a look at the inside. What shapes and patterns can you see? What your paintings have dried? Decide to how you're going to decorate it, what medium you use. Those a lot to choose from. From gel pens, acrylic pans to colored pencils. 3. Materials: Your project, you will need watercolor and mixed media paper, watercolor paints and brushes, colored pencils, gel pens, acrylic pen, and watercolor brush pens. Don't worry if you don't have all of these new smart your check out my brush class, spicing up your watercolors with gel pens and fine liner pens, where we go over paper, paint brushes and paint in more detail. Then miss class. In the warm-up lesson, we will look more closely at colored pencils and pens. You will see me using them and commenting on them during the demonstrations. 4. Warm Up: Once you have decided what fruit or vegetable you're going to use for your project. It's a good idea to think about what colors you will need. Creating a page of swatches helps you to decide. You can see how the paint looks on your paper. You can also play about with adding water and other colors. And finally, when the swatches or dry, you can experiment with different pens and pencils to see the effect. You will notice that my watercolor paint lightens as it dries. This is important to keep in mind, especially if you want to create contrast. However, one of the lovely things about this technique is you're compelled on the contrast and tones you want by adding a layer with pens and pencils. Acrylic paints and gel pens are generally opaque and can be used for creating contrast, highlighting or adding details. Or simply as a decorative touch. Different types of pens and nip sizes will change the look of your embellishments. It's worth experiment. I have experimented with a few different pens and pencils and taken notes to help me remember. I have also experimented on some leaves and stems. This is something you could try to helps you visualize your finished piece. Here, I'm using a gel pen with a fine point, which gives me control over the effect I want to achieve. Next, I'm trying not to brush pen, which makes a much broader mark. And then the large leaf, I'm intensifying the aqua color with triangular shapes made with a colored pencil. 5. Practise page edited sound: In this lesson, I have put together a practice page to give you some ideas for your project. You will find the pH of lines, shapes I have painted, and resources which you can print off and used to practice with your parents. 6. Final Piece : For my final piece, I have chosen a large B stake tomato. Because of its strong color, irregular shape. I have done a simple outline and painted the tomato with the same techniques we used when painting the swatches. If you're nervous about drawing, I have included a page of simply drawn tomatoes and resources for you to print it off. Here. I have painted the whole tomato from a few angles and embellish them with a variety of pens. Then I cut it up and had a good look at the site. Dolby your profile with the details. Simplify what you see. Choosing interesting shapes. And also don't worry if it's not accurate, it doesn't matter. We're not creating a botanical painting. Here. You will see that I'm using the techniques and ideas from the swatches in the warm-up lesson and from the practice pages. I hope by watching this lesson and seeing how I create my pieces, it will give you confidence to try for yourself. The main key is to play and have fun. You will learn so much by doing this. Enjoy the rest of the lesson. 7. Thank You!: Thank you for joining me in this class. I do hope you enjoyed it. In this class. We have painted a page of fruit and vegetables, created a pay to swatches, explored colored pens and pencils, created different effects on our paintings, and completed a project. See you in the next class, where we will be using masking fluid and salt crystals to create depth negative shapes and texture. Here's a sneak peek. You in the next class. Bye.
