1. 0 Midjourney 101 Basics: If you're a creative artist, designer, or content creator and you're passionate about making high quality imagery, I recommend you consider learning Mid journey as an additional tool to help you create concept art and design work. These can be for different applications such as moodboards, for lifestyle photography, social media, advertising, branding, fashion design, illustrations, and much more. My name is Melissa, and I've been working in the design field for over 15 years. I started in advertising agencies creating international campaigns for brands, and I'm very familiar with the creative process, which is also something we'll be covering as part of this course. I think one of the things you need to consider about AI tools like Mid Journey is that they enable you to create high quality imagery at a fast pace with minimal costs. This means you can share art direction concepts with a client even before investing too much time and money, and everybody in the end will be happier with the results. So why M journey then? Think of Ma journey as your creative ally when thinking of art direction concepts that you can share with a client. Make sure your skill set remains relevant with all the AI generative tooling out there. Make unique content to be visually appealing and stand out from the rest. Please don't worry if you're not tech savvy or haven't used Ma journey before. We'll be covering how to set the tool up. Don't worry about the copyright implications, either, because we're going to create unique content from scratch without stealing from any artist's work. And if you don't have all the latest tools like Photoshop, our content will still have high quality. As a bonus, we're including in this course a wonderful 72 card deck with over 600 art references to help you build your prompts. So without any further ado, I hope you will enjoy this course and create unique stunning content for your next creative project. I'll see you in the course and let's get started. 2. 1 Midjourney Subscription: Setting up Midjourney. So what is Midjourney? Midjourney is a generative AI tool service that generates images from natural language descriptions called prompts. You can think of Midjourney as a type of diffusion model. You've probably heard of Dale, which belongs to open AI, and it works by gradually adding noise to an image until it reaches a desired level of realism. I'm not going to get too technical here, but later on when we get familiar with a concept called seed, just remember that it's a unique number identifier that creates a field of visual noise, a bit like TV static, and it serves as a starting point to generating the initial image grids. Now let's set up DISCRE and talk a little bit about Midjourney subscription plans. So just so you know, Midjourney software is operated by using Discord server with bot commands. So first, you'd like to set up DisCOd account, and I'm just going to download it. In my case, it's going to be for a MAC, and I'm waiting for that now. Then after you install it, you can open it up and search, you know, just add in here and search for Midjourney. I will have the little sailing boat icon. And if you wanted to be outside of, you know, all the channels and so forth, all you need to do is, you know, go into find or start a conversation and type in Midjourney. And it will create a separate channel, if you will. You know, it will be private. Now let's go into the subscription plans. There are four subscription plans that are offered by Midjourney. The starting basic plan is only $7 a month. And this is always changing, but you get a sense when you have, you know, little imagery that you'd like to produce. $21 a month is the next one, and gives you the standard plan gives you 15 hours of fast generation. So I think it's pretty good if you have to do many different images all day long, and that would definitely be a way to go. But more so the pro plan, which is a bit more commercial work, I will give you 30 hours of fast generations. And finally, we have the Whooping mega plan, which is $196 per month, and it gives you 60 hours of fast generations. I think at this level, you're really talking about an agency, and I don't think, to be honest, you need as many hours. So just stick to the standard or the pro plan instead. So there you go. This is a quick overview of, you know, the subscription plans with Midjourney. But we're also going to be covering a little bit about the website tool and how it works. So I'll see you in the next tutorial. 3. 2 Midjourney Website: Let's get into the website features and documentation. So this is the basic website of Midjourney, which looks like an art gallery where you can see other people's work, and the prompts created are very stylish. You can drag and drop into what will you imagine section. But I wouldn't recommend that, so because the whole point is that you can create your own imagery from scratch. So try to avoid stealing from what other people are making. I'm going to navigate into the Create tab, and this will show you the history of images we've created lately. Then in the organized section, I can also see my images where I select a couple of them and either put them in a folder or just download them. It's pretty handy if you're on the website version and you want to organize your images and folders. There's also a filter function where you can have the parameters changed, such as the image size, the stylization, the weirdness, the variety, and the latest version, which is 6.1. There's many versions prior to that, and that will also affect the output of your image. Finally, we're going to go see the chat section where you can see other people commenting on each other's prompts and you can edit directly in their images or add to the chat itself. The last thing I want to cover in this video is documentation. Click on documentation and you can see that Midjourney has a really good set of help guides that will explain to you all the basic features. Going to be covering most of the features in this course itself. But if you want to be up to date, please go to the section for reference and latest updates. In the next video, we'll be covering copyright and terms of service. I'll see you then. 4. 3 Midjourney Copyright: Okay, we're getting into the copyright in terms of service. I mean, many people are very worried, right, that is how ethical are the images produced, the training data, and so forth. I don't want to get into the nitty gritty of how their training models are operating, but I would say there's still an ethical way of producing imagery without having to quote the artist itself. So just keep in mind that when you're creating content in Midjourney by default, all images are created publicly, and they could be subject to re editing by other creators or editors of Midjourney tool because it's a social media platform, essentially. But if you don't want your images to be public or visible, then I would suggest that you get the Pro Omega subscription plan. And, you know, in the server where it's private channel, you can switch into a steel mode just to keep the images private. So I'm going to show you how to do that. So I'm in my private server here with Midjourney. I'm just going to type in slash DNS Steals, and none of your images will be visible by the community. Another thing I want to make you aware is that you are the owner of the rights of the images created. And you can use them for commercial purposes. But, you know, if you're using the images from another artist, you don't really hold the owner rights. So just be mindful. You need to create the image from scratch yourself, and that's when you can be used for commercial purposes. If you are making more than $1 million in revenue, you definitely need to be subscribed to a P Omega plan, which I'm sure you would be. And if you're using images from other people, like we said before, just don't try to take that ownership. I think as content creators, artists and designers, we just need to be ethical in the way we produce our work. And that's why the card deck will be very, very useful to you. But let's just get straight into the tool, and I'll see you in the next video. 5. 4 Midjourney Upscaling: Okay, welcome to the section of variations and upscaling. So the first thing we're going to do is use the command Imagine. So let's go into Discord, and here we go. Type in slash Image and then the prompt box will be basically asking you to type in a sentence, and the sentence can be anything you can imagine. So we're going to start with a subject, and that subject can be either a person, an animal, an object, or even a location. So I'm going to be using from my deck of card references a farm animal, and I'll type it in as photograph of a pink sheep in a green field. Now we can see this visual noise idea comes into play. I can see four images being generated, where I can either try to upscale one of these images or create variations for one of them. You can see how the image grid is constructed from top left to right. You can count one, two, three, four. So in this instance, I want to create variations for number four. Now that I have my variations from number four, I think I'm going to upscale number one. At this point in time, I can either upscale subtle or upscale creative. So if I do subtle, wait a minute, and now I can right click on this image to Savage. Now that you know about upscaling, let's have a look at the different model versions in the next video. 6. 5 Midjourmey Models: Different model versions. So one of the nicest things about Midjourney is that it has different model versions you can trial depending on the type of imagery you want to create. So each model version is meant to be improved on making it more efficient and also improving on the quality. Right now, the latest version of Midjourney is 6.1. So for the purposes of this exercise, I'm going to type in a prompt that will read cute cuddly bear Toy. And let's see what type of images it creates with the latest version. Now I'm going to teach you how to switch between models. First type in slash settings, and then there's a drop down where you can see all the versions. We can confirm that it's currently set to the latest version 6.1. Remember that according to the Midjourney version 6.1 will produce more coherent images and be more precise with details and textures. It's also slightly faster in terms of speed, which will save you time and money. For now, let's go to a previous version. So from the drop down, select version 5.2 and see what the difference is. I'm going to copy and paste the prompt again, and you can see, Okay, the image is quite different in terms of the environment and the surroundings. I haven't been too descriptive with this prompt, so it's something you could add onto, but you can see the difference with the latest version that comes in the level of detail, texture, styling, the lighting with different environments. Let's go back into settings, and from the dropdown menu, I'll select the Nig model Vsix Alpha. This model is heavily influenced by manga style type of illustration based. You don't always need to use the dropdown, but you can also type in it as a parameter by making use of nig six. And there it is. You can see the real difference in terms of styling. By default, Nige will go more towards illustration. And if this is the type of work you want to be producing, just keep in mind that this is the type of model. This is all for now, but in the next video, we're going to cover some of the additional settings you can use. I'll see you in a minute. 7. 6 Midjourney Using Settings: Welcome back. So now we're getting into using settings in a little bit more detail. Let's have another quick overview around the settings again. So we'll do slash settings here, and then there's a couple of things besides the version model that you can control. Before you go on generating imagery, you can decide the level of stylization that you want to go for. This is especially powerful because Midjourney does tend to have a high degree of stylization, just to make changes more aesthetically pleasing. But if you were to go into the raw mode, this will change drastically. So let's try it out, and I'm going to use, again, my card deck in terms of generating ideas. For now, I'm going to pick the environment of a forest, and let's type it in our own prompt a photograph of a lush forest. You can see that when it's stylized like this, it's a little bit fake in terms of lighting, and it wouldn't be as realistic if you were to look at it with your own camera. Now, let's try o mode and see what happens with the same prompt. You can type in style raw into the prompt, and let's see what happens now. There you go. You have photography of a forest, and this looks much more realistic than our first version. It looks like real travel photography. Sometimes it's better if you can generate images with the raw mode because then you can have more control with the camera filters, which you can use from the prompt builder card deck. Let's go back into settings and see what else we can do. The next setting I want to introduce you to is going to be the personalized setting. What this does is basically bring you to a website with image rankings, and after 200 times of liking certain images, it will take your preferences and give you a particular style. I think because Midjourney is a social tool, it's definitely worth participating with the community and chatting with each other to see what you're learning because it will incentivize what you're doing and you're becoming part of something much bigger. Plus, you can learn from each other's prompts just to understand what people have in writing down. So now based on the images that I've selected, I'll type in Lush Forest P. And as you can see, there's a drastic difference in terms of color, light. It's taking the aggregate of what I've liked so far in my rankings as a way of bringing a new style. And you might prefer this type if you're doing commission work or if you're doing a specific art style that you wanted to be consistent throughout. This is a way you can do it. Now we have a public mode, which means people would be able to see the images we make. So if you don't want public mode, just remember to switch slash StealS so you can switch to a private kind of visibility setting. Then we have a remix mode, which I think it's definitely worth looking at. When you have it on and then you're making variations with your image, I would basically put in an editing mode of your prompt. So then you can add certain things to it. So let's activate remix for now under settings. And I'm going back to my card deck just to get a new fresh idea for a prompt. I'm going to pick in the medium section, a silhouette of a tree and type it in. Let's get our variations like we normally do. Okay, let's see. And now I'm going to add a camera lens with pinhole lens because I don't really like the style of this, so I want to have more control over the type of camera that would surface in here. I'm still not convinced about the results, so I'm going to try a depth of feel instead of a pinhole lens. So, you see, that's why remix is so interesting because every time I re roll the variations, I will be able to add what I want. So I'm choosing depth of field camera lens now, and let's see what happens. Another thing I want to teach you about is the way of experimenting and exploring. You can use brackets to bring multiple types of permutations, which is basically in the variation set. So I could say in brackets, I want the silhouette of a bracket, tree, comma, lion, close bracket. And then it will create the same style, but with two different subjects. So two different variation sets. Or you can try to vary the style itself. So first, I was going with the pinhole lens. I could do it that in brackets. And then coma, the depth of field lens could also be closed brackets. So I could have that inside, and it would create the same object, which is the tree and under the two different styles. So why don't we try different prompt now just to see how it works. So let's go back to our car deck, and this time, I'm going to select a white polar bear. Now, on the re roll, I would like to vary the medium. So I'm going to say in brackets, a permutation of low poly, comma, ultraviolet, coma and watercolor, close bracket. Then it's going to ask me if I want to roll this job with three different treatments, and I will say, yes. Remember this takes some GPU time, so just be mindful that you could run out of credits fairly quickly if you use it too much. So if you're going to do permutations, maybe being more in the commercial plan. At this point in time, you can decide whether you want to do more realistic variations on a specific style or upscale it, right? So I would say the subject itself could also be changed to other types of arctic animals, for example. But now you get a sense of the basic settings, the models, how upscaling and variation work. So in the next module, Module two, we're going to get into the actual prompt structure, and we're going to be covering the different types of prompts that exist, and we're going to use our reference guide to help create on really nice examples. We're going to cover image prompts, multi prompting, and in case you have already generated imagery for clients as a creative yourself, you want to use your own images. This is also something you can take advantage of. So I'll see you in the next module. Bye. 8. 7 Midjourney Prompt Structure: Welcome back to Module two. And now we're getting more into what prompts to create and how to create them. So let's cover the prompt structure first. According to generative AI language, a prompt is basically an instruction or a short text that is interpreted and transformed into an image by the model itself. The text would normally be broken down into smaller pieces and these pieces are called tokens, and these tokens are compared then with the training data, and that's what's used to generate the image. In this course, we're going to cover text prompts, image prompts, and multi prompts. Let's start with the basic prompt structure, and these are primarily text prompts. It can be as simple as just one word, phrase, or even an emoji. A journey works best with simple and short phrases. So try to avoid unnecessary text or one of those mega prompts. The text or description of the image you want to generate is probably going to have a subject. So you're going to think either a person, animal, character, location, or even an object. It also could be more descriptive in terms of whether it's a photo, an illustration, a painting, a sculpture, and also think of the environment, if it's indoors, outdoors, in a specific location. Think about the lighting. Is it hard lighting, soft lighting, natural lighting? Is there a specific color palette? Is it monochromatic, vibrant? What is the mood? It's important to try and see whether your characters are in action mode. Are they calm, energetic, et cetera. So additional elements I want you to consider are things like camera view, time of day, emotions. So all of these are in the card deck sections, and you can make it part of your brainstorming for prompts. I think you will like it a lot because it doesn't rely on any particular artist, but these are more universal art references and words that when combined, it will give you limitless possibilities in an ethical way. I really, really encourage you to brainstorm with these cards, print them out, see how they can be useful for your own creative process, and try exploring a wide variation of photographic styles and art movements. In the next lesson, we're going to be experimenting with the basic prompt, taking into consideration what we described above. So let's start with Midjourney, and I'll see you then. 9. 8 Midjourney Medium: Okay, so let's look at medium. For this exercise, I'm going to choose to create the letter A with different types of media. We will do these as permutations, remember, in brackets. So let's say the letter A will be in brackets, acrylic, abstract comma, and illuminated manuscript. I've taken these ideas from the prompt builder card deck, so let's see what happens. Let's roll it out, and it's going to ask me again if I'm sure of creating as many permutations, I'm going to say yes. There we go. We have quite a few image style variations, and this is where remix will come in again. And you can either do a variation of one style and then add to it, or maybe you can even change the letter to B, C or D, you know, something like that. Midjourney is trying to get the accuracy of letters in general, so it's still kind of in beta mode. But you can get the gist of how an object can be influenced by a medium, and there's so many you can choose from in the card deck. So I really encourage you to experiment and try doing, you know, different bits and pieces. In the next video, we're going to cover permutations with subject and say how we can create a little bit of a lifestyle photography. So I'll see you in the next video. Uh, 10. 9 Midjourney Subject: Okay, we're in the subject part of the module. So form prompt, I'm looking at our subject cards, and I think I'm going to do a little thing more creative, if you will. So we're going to do a permutation and brackets of open dancer, actress beside open brackets, bus stop, a concert hall, and see what we get from making these permutations. Just keep in mind that permutations are really more time consuming, and it's only worth it if you're in the commercial plan, but otherwise, avoid it because it will take all your credits out with GPU time, and, you know, you're just going to have to pay more. But anyway, there you go. So we have our beautiful actress in a concert hall, which is kind of common for somebody doing that kind of red carpet thing in the Oscars. And we have our dancer posing beside a bus stop that it's kind of creative. Then we have a dancer in the concert hall, which is, you know, obviously a natural fit. Finally, we're going to have an actress in the bus stop. This is quite artistic. It could enhance the lifestyle photography here, but it has some more monochromatic cinematic effect, and you can use the remix mode to make more details. But anyway, we're going to leave it for now. This is just to give you a sense of what a subject in different locations could look like and how that can influence the creativity and how you think ideas for your prompts. In the next video, we're going to cover camera lens. 11. 10 Midjourney Camera Lens: So camera lens, right? For this exercise, we're still going to be using our actress on a bus stop image. But what I would like to do here is play a little bit with permutations with camera lens. So I'm going to my car deck again, and now I've selected in open brackets. I'm going to type in first person view, the high contrast and bouquet close bracket effects. So let's re roll the image and insert them into a remix prompt editing box. Again, you have to say yes to the permutations, but we're going to get a sense of how this image can be improved on. These new images are interesting, although I have to say that the first person point of view, we don't see as much as the effect of an actress anymore, but the framing has varied and then we're looking at the bouquet effect. Also, it doesn't look like an actress anymore, but you definitely get a feeling of magic, and finally, the high contrast one could also be a random person. I think what you need to take out of this is the starking difference between effects. You can go a little bit more cinematic if you want to put some effort or weight into the prompt, you can do so by doing a multi prompt. We're going to cover multi prompt a little bit more in future videos, but in this instance, I want the actress to have more weight because it's starting to be diluted with a normal person. So this is what we're going to do in our high contrast re role. I'm going to click on it again. And then I'm going to type in after actress Colin Collin, the number two, and this should be giving more weight to the actress element. Let's submit and see what happens, and there we go. It probably needs some more natural feeling, but it's just to give you a sense of how we can use these filters and framing photography. So make sure you experiment widely with the card deck, and in the next lesson, we're going to be covering lighting. I'll see you then. 12. 11 Midjourney Lighting: Lighting. So now we're getting into the lighting effect, which is very important to understand what it does. So the quality of our images can be controlled a little bit better as we saw with the dancer and the bus tub that was primarily given for an evening time. But I want to use the same example to bring forward other types of lighting sources. So we're going to experiment with daylight, hazy lighting, and key lighting. As usual, I'm taking this from the idea deck that you have attached, and let's see what happens with our prompt when we remix it. Additionally, I'm going with the style raw, so just see how my lighting will dramatically affect without the styling of my journey. And there you go. We have very different types of imagery thanks to the key lighting, which is lovely and it has a very stylistic effect. Then we also have our daylight, which works well. It's very interesting. It's something that would be unusual maybe for an art performance. And finally, we have the hazy lighting, which also gives a very artistic, dramatic effect to our pictures. And that's all for understanding lighting. But in the next video we're going to be covering is the environment and see how that also affects our prompting decisions. I'll see you in the next video. 13. 12 Midjourney Environment: Okay, environment. Now let's see how the environment can affect the shot with hazy lighting, the denser we might want to have her in a different environment from the bus stop. So right now, we're going to reedit and have a permutation for open bracket, industrial factory coasth I can't say this post apocalyptic, coma and lake close bracket. And we'll see what happens now when we submit this. These are the results, which I think turned out to be very interesting, and it really gives a sense of space, and there's even storytelling. So you could ask why this dancer decided to be in an industrial setting, why is she alone? Why is she at the lake? This starts to bring out more to the imagination on what Midjourney is really excellent at. Trying to tell a story with images is something that you should always keep in mind when thinking about adding variations and iterations to your prompts. But that being said, I'm very happy to go into more advanced prompting. So let's go into the emotions, which is next. 14. 13 Midjourney Emotions: Okay, emotions. So emotions can add a lot of storytelling to your characters, and it creates an emotional bond to the image itself. This is especially relevant for lifestyle photography where you don't want flat characters. So I'm going to use one of our previous images from our actress. First, I want you to go to the Emoji face that's on top of the right hand side corner and then click on it, and you're going to find an envelope. Okay, so let's just click on that envelope. After copying the job ID, I'm going to do a slash show paste in the job ID number so I can re edit it again. Now I'm going to vary it slightly by clicking on very subtle. I'm going to add the permutations that I've chosen from my emotions card deck. So open brackets, anxiety, comma, pride, comma, and surprise. Let's submit and see what happens. And there you go. We can see how the expression changes radically between a similar style of actress. First, we have a surprise view, then we have an anxious emotion reaction. And finally, we have a proud mood or emotion. And these are interesting ways of bringing more depth into what your character is going through because storytelling is a huge way of captivating people's attention. So I hope this was useful, and in the next chapter, we're going to be looking at composition. I'll see you then. 15. 14 Midjourney Composition: All right, composition. So when thinking of composition, we normally think about a type of arrangement to represent an artistic form. In the card deck for reference, we have composition section altogether, and I'm going to choose a planted pot framed within the rule of thirds grid. Okay, let's put that in. Yeah, there we go. We can see the actual framing of the picture follows the rule of thirds. So now we're going to re roll our planted pot, but this time we'll be using the golden ratio composition. Aspect ratio I'm going to pick is 169, and let's see how this gets generated. We're going to cover aspect ratios in the next few lessons, but for now, let's just see how composition can be applied with AR 16 column nine ratio. And there we go. We have a really nice harmonic composition arrangement of the potted plant, and this is something to consider when you're trying to do lifestyle photography to make sure the composition remains harmonic. In the next lesson, we'll be doing some image prompts. So this is something I'm really excited to teach you, and I'll see you soon. 16. 15 Midjourney Image Prompts: Image prompting. So image prompts is one of the most exciting types of features that Midjourney supports, and I'm really big fan because you can bring your own imagery and your own photographs, too. So you could also bring things from the past as a way of influencing your style and having more control over the look and feel of your image. For this specific exercise, we're going to use a couple of images that we already have from the Type dreams Image library. In order to influence the output of a text prompt, I'm going to use a character of a white rabbit that was done with multiple experiments in Midjourney. But I'm going to bring in the finish piece, which will serve to influence my image prompt. So I'm going to teach you how to do that now. The first thing you need to do is upload an image to Midjourney to its server, to the Discord server. So just click on the plus sign and then upload file. Selected, and now I'm going to click on Enter, so it's there, right? Next thing I want you to do is right click on the image and say Copy Link, and then you're going to paste the link inside the prompt box. You're going to write a different animal like a white cat sitting on a chair in the style of Alice in Wonderland. Let's see what happens. And now we can see the image prompt will influence our final text prompt. And I'm going to do a version also without the image, just so you can see the difference between both. So I'm going to re roll this and take out the image link and submit it, and let's see what we get now. So you can see those are drastic differences in between both types of variation, and the first one definitely holds true to the original image. And it was influenced in terms of character himself, the type of chair, the type of background, the composition, the styling. It's very hyperrealistic when you put it all together, so another example I want to show you is if you had two types of images and how to blend them with each other, there's a command blend in Midjourney. In my case, I'm going to upload the rabbit again with the cat and see what happens. My new prompt will be a white mouse, and let's see how these two images affect the final output. We're going to copy the link for the rabbit here, paste it now. We're going to copy the link for the cat, paste it. And now we're going to rewrite our prompt white mouse sitting on a chair in the style of Alice and Wonderland. And let's see what happens. And now we have another image. The one thing I would say is that the two styles are blending in now, and we're not getting as much originality. So think whether it's really worth blending different images to get the results you want or have more control with one image as influence. Another command I want to show you is slash Describe. And this is important because you might already have an image in mind that you really like, but you don't know how to translate that into a prompt. So what we're going to do is type in slash Describe, and we'll give you an option to either paste link or upload a file. In my case, I'm going to upload the file of the White Rabbit again. Because I want to understand what type of prompt I should be typing in for future characters, or maybe it's just the scenery, you know, you want to change, understand how Midjourney translates this into a prompt itself from an image. So let's see what it says. By default, it gives me four descriptions. The first one, it says that it's a white rabbit and an elegant dress sits on the sofa surrounded by ornate wallpaper and drapes, creating a whimsical scene of luxury and fantasy. Now that you see all the descriptions, just click on an image, just click on Imagine. A now that you see all the descriptions, just click on Imagine All and see what happens. I think the lesson here is that all of them actually look quite similar because they're using certain words. I would like to take one of these long descriptions and show you the last command here, which is shorten. And what it will do is it will extract all the unnecessary words and give me a shorter description, but it's more relevant to what is being seen. So I'm going to copy all of their description, then slash shorten paste and see what we get. And there we go. It's created a much shorter description of the white rabbit, and I think that's exactly what we wanted to kind of really understand what are the parts that are influencing most in our art. And if I change the word rabbit, maybe to a different animal, it still respects the same continuity without having to overdo it. Well done. This is all for now in terms of image prompts, but let's go into the next video, and we'll be covering multi prompts. I'll see you then. 17. 16 Midjourney Multi prompt: Multi prompt. So if you're looking to give emphasis or more importance to a certain part of your prompt, you can control this with multi prompting. What we do here is we use a double column to indicate the journey that we want to consider this part of the concept separate from the next word. So the best way of showing you is with an example. If we had a fruit cake in our prompt, but I decide I want to treat this as a compound word separately, then I will have a colon in between fruit and cake. So let's see the difference of both first. Let's just type in fruit cake and see what happens. You can see it's pretty much blended as a compound word, and it's a fruit cake. But now let's add the colon two colons in between, both words and roll it again. You can tell straightaway what the difference is. It's treating the word fruit separate from the word cake. So it's not as blended as the previous version, but it's more like a decorative add on topping on the cake, and you can see those clearly separation between both. I could even add more emphasis on the word fruit by adding a number two beside the word fruit, and it will affect even more the weight. So let's see what happens when we re roll this. And there you go. It's almost non existent with the cake itself. You can primarily see only fruit, and it would be very hard for me to even think of this as a fruit cake. Let's try another example, and what we're going to cover is the word spaceship. And this is the image we get. Now, let's try to re roll this by adding two columns between space and ship. Submit, and let's see what we get. Okay, so this is not as obvious that it's a space and a ship. So I'm going to add some weight to the word ship as opposed to the word space, because I think space is pretty much there. I really want to see a ship here, so I'm going to add Colin Colin beside ship and the number two, and let's see what happens. And there you go. Straightaway, it's taking exactly what I wanted to see, which is the word ship, which takes priority, but it's still influenced by the idea of space. So it's just the concept changes drastically, and this is something that you can play with. By all means, try a couple of compound words from our guide section and have fun with multi prompting. I'll see you in Module three. 18. 17 Midjourney Basic Parameters: Welcome to Module three. We're going to be covering in this particular video the basic parameters, but I'm so happy that you made it this far, and I'm hoping that you're already starting to feel comfortable, maybe having some fun with Midjourney. Anyway, we're going to be covering additional parameters in this module, and will give you even more control over the aesthetic of your images. We're going to be covering aspect ratios, chaos, character reference, no parameter, quality, repeat, sets, style, style reference, stylized, and tile. So without any further ado, let's start with our aspect ratio, which we covered slightly in the previous video, but let's get started with it. I'll see you soon. 19. 18 Midjourney Aspect Ratio: Aspect ratio. So the aspect ratio is parameter where you have the width to height of an image. Normally, we will have AR, then the first number will represent the width column, and then the second number will represent the height. I'm sure you've noticed by now that the default aspect ratios of Midjourney are one to one, so that means it's a square image. Besides the default, the most common aspect ratios are dash dash, AR five column four. Common for frame and print radio, then AR three column two, common in print photography, and then AR seven, column four, close to HD TV screens and smartphone screens. We're going to try now to change the aspect ratio for one of our ballet dancers. In the re roll inside the prompt box, change the aspect ratio to nine column 16 with a Zoom of one as opposed to two. And there you go. You got a really nice composition of our dancer with portrait based type of imagery. So you can do this with any of the images that you've upscaled. You can always change it and rechange it again to be landscape so you know what type of output you want. Give it to whether it's for print or for digital. In the next video, we're going to be covering the chaos perimeter. I'll see you shortly. 20. 19 Midjourney Chaos: Chaos. So the chaos parameter will influence how creative you image can get. The higher the value, the more unexpected the results, and the lower the values, you're going to have a more predictable result. But this could be interesting when you want to experiment with something completely different. So I'm bringing one of the ideas from the card deck, which is a pottery vase. I'm going to combine it with another part of the deck, which is the texture section. I want it to be a cracked surface with vibrant colors, and the values for chaos will range 0-100. I'm going to do a permutation of open bracket, zero, coma and 50, close bracket and see what we get. Let's type it in. I'll accept yes because it's also going to take some GPU time and credits. And there you go. We have a cracked style for our vase. I think of chaos as an experimental parameter that will allow you to do crazy things. Now, for the next parameter we're going to be covering is character reference, so I'll see you in the next chapter. 21. 20 Midjourney Character Reference: Character reference. If you're thinking about storytelling for sure, you want to have the same style of character or maybe you have a graphic novel, and you want the same type of person throughout, you know, the visuals as much as possible. So this is CRef will also bring the URL of the image as a parameter. For this prompt, I'm going to create a new character. We're going to type in an owl as a guardian made in Blender three D. This has taken some inspiration from the medium section part of the card deck that you already have. And let's see what type of character we get. It's definitely something different, so we can always go back and try to add more types of lighting, different types of composition and things like that. I'm going to choose one of these characters just to show you how we can embed it in different scenarios. So let's go ahead and do number two for upscale. Then I'm going to right click on the upscaled image copy link, and now we're going to rewrite the prompt to Guardian OL flying over a castle. Then we insert CRF, and you paste the Link in here, and now click Enter and let's see what happens. And there we go. As you can see, it's taking the reference from our character image. It's a bit more of an illustration style, so you can always go back to bring in Blender a little bit more. But overall, it gives a sense of the same character in different shots. So you could try different things. Maybe the owl is in a forest or it's flying across the ocean, anything you can think of. Think about other scenarios where your character has the sea ref embedded in. And what we're going to do next is going to look at the parameter called no parameter. So I'll see you in the next chapter. 22. 21 Midjourney No Parameter: No parameter. So the no parameter is essentially used when you don't want certain things to be in your image. It's basically excluding a particular section or objects that you don't want to be showing in the scene. So in this instance, let's just go with an idea that I got from the card deck, and this is found in the environment cards. I'm going to type in Utopian paradise and see what we get. I'm going to upscale one of these, and just so we use the no parameter, I'm going to have dash dash, no buildings and see what happens then. So here you go. We have beautiful images without buildings, and it still conveys the main concept, which is an utopian paradise. Now that you know how to use the no parameter, let's dive in into the quality one. I'll see you in the next chapter. 23. 22 Midjourney Quality: Quality. So the quality parameter is basically more detailed imagery that would consume more GPU time. The default setting is already pretty good in Midjourney, but if you want to increase the detail or quality, then you can have dash dash o quarter, and if you want less quality, which means you would have something like dash dash q 0.5. So let's have a look at it with a prompt. I'm taking inspiration from the card deck here. I'm going to type in pop art Couch. Let's see what we get. I'm going to upscale one of the images, and now we can see when I click on very subtle. This is where I'm going to type in Q, and two, and let's see what we get. There you have it. It's a whole new set. I would say the quality has increased the texture of the cloud is beautiful, so it's overall a pretty good picture. Now that we have covered quality, let's go into our next parameter, which is repeat. I'll see you in the next video. 24. 23 Midjourney Repeat: Repeat. The repeat parameter does exactly what it says, which is repeating a job multiple times like a re roll. All you need to do is type in your prompt, and then, let's say, repeat with dash five, and it will re roll five times. This is just a quick way of exploring artwork. Maybe you don't want to do one at a time, but you want to do it all at once. So from our card deck, I'm looking at the section of medium. I want to clash of a kitchen and see what repeat three times would do for us. And there you have it three sets of completely different explorations that will save you some time, and then you can decide, Okay, I'm going to go with this particular style. Now we're going into a different section altogether, where we're going to be exploring seeds and how to use them for your prompts. So I'll see you in the next video. 25. 24 Midjourney Seeds: Seeds. So Midjourney uses a SED number to create the field of noise. Remember what we discussed before earlier in the course. It's a bit like television static that starts to generate the image grid itself, and you can assign a seed number to an image, and it will accept quite a high range of values. So I'm going to take some inspiration again from our card deck. I want a macro lens of a spider. And then for the SED number, I'm going to put in dash dash seed one, two, three, four, five, and let's submit to see what we get. And there we go. We have a beautiful macro lens of a spider, and the next thing I'm going to do is re roll this image with remix. Now, we're going to change it to a beetle and still have the same seed number. So the framing and the effect should be identical, but instead of a spider, we should be seeing a beetle. And there we go. It looks amazing, so you can try different types of insects. And it's not just the subject, but you could also try other things like the medium, the camera lens, the environment, the composition, and so forth. You can also find the seed value by hovering over the image. So I click the envelope and you can see the SED number that has been randomly allocated related to the field of noise. In a nutshell, you can either assign a value yourself to keep consistency throughout your images, or you can allow Midjourney to allocate a SD number and then reuse it by copying it inside your prompt. In the next chapter, we're going to be looking at the style parameter and how to make the most out of it. I'll see you in a bit. 26. 25 Midjourney Style: Style. So the style parameter is basically replacing the aesthetic that Mid journey has on each one of its versions, and the way we call it out is by having dash style row. This will override any of the default settings attached to styling in Mid journey, which is good because it will give you more control on the aesthetics of your image. You can also access the settings area, and in here, all you have to do is keep row as the default. I'm not going to do it for now, but I'll just type it in as a parameter instead. So right now, I'm going to type in a new prompt taking inspiration from the card deck and the medium section. And we're going to type in the word surrealist movement and see what we get with mid journey default setting. Now let's type in the parameter dash, dash style raw and see what the difference is. At this point in time, you can see that there's a slight variation in the surrealist art movement. At first, it's a little bit more stylized with a mid journey filter, and the second one feels more authentic. And this is especially true when you're trying to bring photography that is raw and then influence it with a camera lens that you want to take priority. Why don't we do that with another example? I'm going to type in a medium from the card deck, which is children's style drawing, and let's see what we get without the raw style. In the samples, we got a very stylized effect from a journey. It's not really giving us the picture of a child kind of doodle that we were hoping to get. So now I'm going to try again, but in this instance, we're going to do a style raw and see what we get instead. So this is a lot more accurate to what we were trying to convey. So by bringing in the style feature of Mid journey, I'm actually getting a much more accurate result. So this is a little bit of trial and error. Again, if you want true illustration or true photography, I would advise you to check with and without. You might be very much attracted to the style Mid journey has by default and not want to override it, but it's up to you and depends on the project that you're working on. In the next video, we're going to talk about style reference, which is really exciting, so I'll see you in the next chapter. 27. 26 Midjourney Style Ref: Style reference. Another way you can influence the art direction and have more control over your imagery is with style reference, I style reference parameter, you're just going to have a ref and then paste in the URL link of the image. Think of it as the underlying aesthetic of your artwork. You can also have multiple URLs to influence the style reference. And if you want to have more consistency, your style, I highly recommend this feature. Sometimes SD works, sometimes SRF works, sometimes image prompt works best. So there are just multiple ways of controlling the style and having more authority. Let's do an example ourselves just to see how it works in combination with style weight. So first, we're going to brainstorm an idea from our reference card deck and choose Neon lighting coffee shop. This is how we're going to upscale one of the images, and yep, we will bring it in as a reference link to the other types of location. So let's upscale it first. Then just copy link with the right click of your mouse on the picture, and now we're going to type in slash Imagine a church interior and have dash as ref paste in the link, and let's see what happens. And there you go. Now you can see how the reference style influenced the location, which instead of a coffee shop, it's a church. And you can bear your prompt to say, Hey, I want this to be a pizza place or a school or anything you can think of will be influenced heavily by this reference image. So now that you know how it works, why don't we try another example with something different? We're going to bring another type of influence. This could be with textures and going to choose from the card deck, eroded texture, and let's see what type of images it brings up. We are going to take in this texture and try to apply it as a reference image to a Venetian mask and see what kind of artwork it brings. Now, you can see how the texture heavily influences the look and feel of the image. It's almost intertwined in terms of color, in terms of texture, and it just brings a lot of cohesion between the object and the original source. This is getting a lot more into the professional realm of what you would be doing with these parameters. And the more you practice and experiment, the more you understand the influence it will have on your artwork. So try different things. It's really all exploration with mid journey, but it will give you some capabilities for the future. Finally, I want to do the last exercise of ref with an artwork of my own. I basically created a series of colored stamps on paper, and I've taken a picture of this artwork. I'm going to bring it into mid journey just to kind of give you a sense of what we're going to do. Then I'm going to type in Colorful Town, haves ref, the copy to the link of my picture. And this is something very creative that you can start doing with your own artwork and then incorporate it with your own style. You can see the town now appears to be made kind of like a color stamp effect, and that's quite unique. So I want to explore with as many techniques as you want with different R materials, and when you bring them in, break them as dash, dash as reef and see what happens. Have some fun. In the next chapter, we're going to be looking at the stylized parameter. I'll see you then. 28. 27 Midjourney Stylized: Stylized. Now, if you really like the default styling that mid journey brings you, you can control it as well with the stylized parameter. Remember that mid journey is about creating aesthetically pleasing imagery with the color, the composition, the forms. It's not going to be chaotic like in the previous parameter. In this one, you're going to have more predictability. So let's try an example from the card deck, which is a tilt shift lens of a town. And we're going to apply the permutation open brackets, zero, 501,000 closed brackets just to see how it varies more significantly. You can see the different levels of detail have changed quite a bit. The style is zero, brings a more realistic effect of real houses on how the real lens would work. The closer you get to 1,000, it becomes almost more cinematic as a high level production of a picture. It's really up to you how you want to use the stylized effect. But by all means, if your goal is more direction, it might be a good way to insert in lifestyle photography or just an artistic type of medium. I'll see you in the next video and we'll be covering the tile parameter. 29. 28 Midjourney Tile: Tile. So the tile parameter will help you create images that are repeatable. They'll essentially act as a pattern for a wallpaper or for a texture, and it's very easy to use. I think it's a good addition for the types of materials you could potentially print or design. So we're going to do is bring a pattern of flowers in siano type style. This is also taking some inspiration from the car deck, and we're going to type it at the end, tile and see what we get. We have a beautiful style pattern that now is repeatable, and you can create a whole seamless wallpaper with it. So it's great if you're doing print materials or book covers and things like that that you always need to have kind of continuity between shapes. And I hope you understand now the power overall of parameters. This is going to help you give control to different parts of your imagery. And in the next module, we're going to be covering a couple of additional functions or commands with the basic interface. And it's really just so you know how they work and add more variety to your projects. I'll see you then. 30. 29 Midjourney Vary Region: Welcome to Module four. We're in the vary Region section. I'm really proud of you that you made it so far. I hope you've learned something up to this point. And what we're going to be exploring here is the varying the region, which is essentially selecting a portion or section of an image and replacing it with other types of objects, if you will. It's also informally called an output painting method, but it's called Vari Region Image journey specifically. So now let's go back into the tool, and I'm going to type in a new prompt, which is a photograph of a young woman wearing a yellow cloak and a yellow hat, dash dash style role. I'm going to upscale one of them, so I can just change or vary the region. Then we will click on vary Region. We're selecting the portion we want to edit or replace, and I'm going to change the color of this hat to red within the prompt itself. Now click Enter and yeah, there you go. The replacement has a red hat and our image looks amazing. But what's happened is that the image replaced the face and we want the same girl. So let's say you didn't want to replace the face, like in this instance, you also want to go to the free selection tool, and that will help you be more organic, whether it's curves in certain parts of the picture that you wouldn't want to replace completely. So let's try it again. We have the same image, and we're going to do the free selection tool and see what happens. Now you have exactly the same person, and the portion you've selected has changed. The next section we're going to be covering is the Pan function, which is really handy when you want to expand on an image. So I'll see you in a minute. 31. 30 Midjourney Pan: Pan. Welcome back. And right now, we're going to be covering the Pan command. It's essentially allows you to expand on your image, which can be helpful when you need multiple formats such as landscape and portrait. First, you need to upscale the image, and then you can click on one of the arrows, and it will allow you to expand in that direction. So I'm going to try it for now. Our prompt will be the photo of the Great Canyon. It's also been taken from our inspiration card deck, and let's see once we upscale what happens. Okay, and there you go. It has expanded on the right hand side, another big chunk of rocks. It looks very much blended with the image, and sometimes it gives us people, but you can always re roll it and give it the no parameter, right? So no people insh. Anyway, this gives you a sense of how you could potentially use photographs within different dimensions and make it part of your toolkit arsenal. In the next lesson, we're going to get into the style tune command. I'll see you there. 32. 31 Midjourney Style tuner: Style Tuner. We also have a command called star Style Tuner, and essentially what it does, it helps us explore different types of styles from a prompt. So instead of typing in slash Imagine, what you would do is type in slash tune, then type in your prompt and it will ask you how many variations or pairings do you want to bring as part of your exploration. So I'm going to do it now. My prompt will be slash tune interior design of a living room. And now that the dialog box has asked me how many directions it has 32 by default. I'm not going to have 32 because that will take away credits, but just keep in mind that you could run out of credits fairly quickly. So I'm just selecting 16 as opposed to 32, and I'm going to submit. So it's now generated for me a unique code or URL. So just click on it and see all the different stylings that you're getting from this living room. You can see that the grid is divided in three parts left, center, and right. And if you scroll down, you get to see completely different styles of living room. Sometimes it's very photographic, heavy, other times it's quite whimsical and colorful, or muted colors depends on what you're going for. So as soon as you select one of the images, it will give you a unique code. You can copy and paste and Mjourney back into the Discord server. So I'm going to copy my code. I'm going back to M journey slash Imagine paste the URL or the Prompt itself, and let's see what we get. So the cool part about this style reference code could be applied not just for the living room, but you could have a bedroom, a kitchen, and it would fall under the same style. So why don't we give it a go? I'm going to do the permutation of a kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, close the bracket, and see what we get with our unique code style. I think what we have looks amazing. It's very uniform in style, and it's just another way of having control over the direction of your work. Keep in mind that style tuner sheet is something you can bookmark and then reference later. In this instance, I had only chosen one part of the grid, just one quadrant. But you can use multiple quadrants if you want and combine styles. It's always going to generate a unique link for you. So now we're heading towards the end of this module, and in the next video, we're going to look at prefer option Sess. 33. 32 Midjourney Prefer Option Set: Prefer option set. So the preferred option set allows you to save commands or parameters that you use regularly, and that way you don't have to type in each time. So you could say, Hey, I prefer a 16 column nine aspect ratio for my pictures, and I don't want to be typing it every time. So you could do a slash Prefer Suffix and then type in after the new value, the aspect ratio of 169. I'm just saving this preference now, and I'm going to type in a new prompt. It's just going to be a watch. And when I hit Enter, you can see straightaway that it's creating imagery with the aspect ratio that I already have in my preferred suffix. If I want to take this out, all I need to do is type in settings, slash settings and click on reset settings, and that will be gone for me. You can also try the preferred option set, which will allow you to save multiple values and you can always reference them back for different commissions or projects. It will save you some time and allow you to be more productive as you keep going with Mid Journey. The last thing I want to cover is an interesting tool called Topas Light Studio. This tool will allow you to upscale a much higher resolution the images you create with MD journey. So whether it's for a print format like a billboard or magazine or anything that requires high definition resolution, I highly recommend using TPAs. All you need to do is drag your images in and then specify the amount of upscaling that you want, and it will do a really, really good job. I think it's worth the investment. It's only one time payment, and it's just something that you're going to be using regularly if you produce images for clients. In the next video, we'll wrap up the course and recap on what we've done. See you then. 34. 33 Midjourney Lets Recap: Let's recap. Congratulations. You've officially finished Mid journey one on one basics course. I hope you learned something new and get some inspiration for your next creative project.
