1. Screenwriting Success intro with website resources: Hey, I'm Jordan Emil, an accomplished screenwriter with over 25 produced credits, and I've sold several screenplays. I've written dozens of movies in multiple genres. And in this course, I will teach you how to be successful in screenwriting. I've been writing movies for over 15 years, and I lived in the middle of Hollywood for most of that time. I learned a lot in my screenwriting career and have applied that knowledge and experience to this course to make the process of writing and selling your screenplay easier for others. This course will first cover the three act structure needed for every screenplay, and will break down what should happen in each act. Each lesson will help you plot and move your story forward. Throughout the course, I'll use examples from critically acclaimed and commercially successful movies. After covering screenplay structure and screenwriting advice, I'll show you how I sold my scripts. I want to make sure that by the end of this course, you should have a screenplay that doesn't just sit on a shelf or stay on a computer. But you have an amazing screenplay that grabs the attention of a producer or production company, so they want to make your movie. Now, let's dive right in and start screenwriting. For free student resources that correlate to this course. Visit my website at www Jordan emola.com. There you can also find my ebooks, podcasts, script coverage services, and a whole lot more. My website offers one on one writing sessions and group courses over Zoom. Can teach you to write your first movie, TV show, or how to write and produce your series or film. I have clients who work nine to five jobs, and I've had ideas for movies or TV shows for years, but they just haven't taken the action to put their ideas into a script. And I can guide you on how to do that and make sure you finish it. You can find more information on my website at www Jordan emola.com. 2. Act 1: From the start of your story, you want to hooking the reader and introduce your protagonist or your antagonist. Before we start, Let's go over some writing terminology. Protagonist. The protagonist is the hero of your story. It's your main character. And the person who we're rooting for. The antagonist is the villain, the entity that's fighting against your hero and causing them a lot of problems. I want to cover a few more terms that I think will help break it down even more and make it easier for you to write beat. A beat is a moment or action by a character. For actors, when they read a script, beats help them determine how to act in a given moment. A group of beats is called a scene. And usually a scene takes place in one location. When your character moves to a different location, it becomes a different scene. Your very first scene should set the tone for the rest of the story and pique the interest of your audience. The first scene of jaws is the first shark attack. Even though we don't see the shark, we are being introduced to the antagonist right away. The first Harry Potter book, harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Voldemort is defeated and the baby who survives the attack is dropped off at the Dursleys house by Dumbledore. The best superhero films have excellent opening scenes. And the first 4 min of Iron Man, Tony Stark is having fun and an army truck drinking and taking photos with soldiers. When boom, the army truck in front of him gets blown up and they are under attack. Then Tony Stark gets kidnapped. That's the start of an excellent first scene and great story. Another great superhero scene is from the first X-Men. When we see magneto as a little kid bending metal to try and get back to his parents when they are taken away from him in a concentration camp. The opening makes us feel for the antagonist of the movie. And this scene was so good. They did the scene again, an X-Men first-class and the Dark Knight. And the first scene, we are introduced to the Joker. We are hooked by a six-minute bank robbery scene. Whatever your genre, you want to set the tone. If you're writing a comedy, you want to make your audience laugh from the very start. One great comedy opening is from National Lampoon's Vacation from 1983, written by John Hughes. This is the first of several vacation movies. We are introduced to Clark Griswold and his son Rusty, for the first time when Clark tries to trade in his car for a sports car. But by the end of the scene, the car dealership has crushed his old car, and Eugene levy convinces Clark to buy a new model of the same car, they just crushed. This first scene sets the tone for the rest of the film. Before moving on, jot down some ideas for an opening that introduces your hero or villain and sets the tone for your story. After an entertaining opening, you want to set up your main characters. Think about their wants, their problems in the world they live in now before it all changes. In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Harry has a terrible life with the Dursleys, who taught him and treat them so unkindly. He lives in a cupboard under the stairs and has no idea of what's about to come in Home Alone. Kevin wants to get away from his family. And the first 10 min, we see him in constant conflict with them. Kevin tells his mom, everyone in this family hates me. His mom replies that maybe you should ask Santa for a new family. He replies, I don't want a new family. I don't want any family. Family suck. I hope I never see you jerks again. And he wishes they would disappear. Setting up how how soon get his wish and he'll be home alone. As much as you can find ways to show. Don't tell. If you ever write a character saying something the audience needs to know. See if you can find a way to show it. This is called show. Don't tell. What's the second scene of Iron Man. We are told of Tony Stark's history, but it's also shown to us with pictures and magazine covers. We find out Tony's dad was a tightened and the weapons industry. And Tony is a genius. But it's presented very quickly at an award ceremony. And we have already been introduced to Tony Stark through an excellent opening scene. In general, a good guideline when setting up your story is you want to meet all your main characters who afford the story. The first 10 min of meet the parents. We meet Greg, his girlfriend Pam, and her parents, Jack and Dina will meet the rest of parents family later. But for now, we know the foremost important characters, Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro, are the most essential to the story. You want to give each character strong introduction and make them distinct and interesting. Make sure your characters have a specific attitude and no one sounds the same. If they do sound similar right now, for your first draft, it's okay because this is something you can fix in later drafts. Don't make it too hard on yourself. The most important thing right now is to keep moving forward with your story. To help you develop your characters and set them up. I've added a character questionnaire that will help you discover your characters. Even more. Brainstorm and write down all your main characters and what is their life like right now before it all changes? Also, think about their wants and their problems. After you set up your story, your main character will experience an inciting incident. This is the thing that will forever change their lives and push her story forward. The Hunger Games, we learn one boy and one girl from each district are selected by an annual lottery to participate in the Hunger Games. Were they must fight to the death. Cat and a sister is selected for this, but keratinous decides to take her place instead. And Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, mysterious letters start coming to the house that Harry is not allowed to open. Then Haggard comes to the house and informs Harry that he's a wizard and home alone. A storm causes all the electricity to go out at McAllister house, and the whole family is running late to the airport. They leave the house and forget the Kevin is still in the attic. Kevin's mom doesn't realize he's not with them until they are on the plane to Paris. In most origin superhero movies, the inciting incident will be the thing that will give them their powers or make them use their powers to save the world. In Spider-Man, Peter Parker gets bitten by a radioactive spider. And Dr. Strange. Stephen is a neurosurgeon who gets into a car accident that will prevent him from using his hands and operating everywhere. Again, Wonder Woman, Steve, Trevor, crashes in the water of the mascara, aka Paradise Island, and Diana dives into the water to save him. This will forever change her world for the rest of her life. Your main character doesn't necessarily know that the inciting incident will rock the world and push them in a new direction. And the Goon is, the setup is about a group of friends who have to move away from each other when they find a treasure map in an attic, the treasure map will push them into adventure. After the inciting incident, the hero will often hesitate to accept change. Change is necessary for life, but that doesn't mean people like it. Your hero maybe latching onto their old world, even though it's best for them to enter a new world. In Toy Story, what he doesn't like buzz and wants him to go away. They don't become friends until much later in the movie. In the mask, the inciting incident is when Jim Carey's car breaks down. He finds the mask. He almost puts the mask on right away, but hesitates when the cops bottom. It's not until he's back in his apartment is when he puts a mask on in Wonder Woman, we find out what's going on outside of the island. Steve, Trevor is wrapped in the lasso of truth and talks about the circumstances of World War II. This triggers Diana to want to leave the island for the first time and save the world, but they end. His mom doesn't want her to leave. And this will bring us and to act to when the hero enters a new world, write down some ideas for the inciting incident. What's that thing that will forever change your main character's life? And then think about how they might hesitate to change. Here's a quick review of act one and some writing advice that may help you haven't exciting opening that will draw and hook in your audience. Then set up your characters in an interesting way after your setup, have an inciting incident. This is the thing that will forever change their lives and push the story forward. Then find a way to make your character hesitate to change. Here's some advice for act one and brainstorming ideas. Rule of ten. If you're having trouble writing a scene, I'm a big believer of the rule of ten. I think I heard Jerry Seinfeld first talk about this, but I've heard many others talk about it too. It's where you brainstorm ten things. And then you will find that one thing that works. When I'm stuck on a scene, I'll brainstorm ten things that could happen. Some of them are good ideas, some of them are terrible. But I do find that one I like after I brainstorm ten. Don't put pressure on yourself to make all your ideas, good ideas. Sometimes writing down a few bad ideas, you know, won't work. Often spark good idea that will work. Determine what your main character wants and then put your protagonist and antagonist wants against each other. Again, if you get stuck in a scene, especially with dialogue, think about what your characters want in that scene. Show. Don't tell. If you ever find a character saying something the audience needs to know. See if you can find a way to show it. Be disciplined about your writing. If you want to complete your story, you have to be disciplined about your writing. And here's a few things that can help that. Writing a little bit every day will go a long way. Some people take ten years to write one thing because they say they never have the time. But all your excuses are not going to move your story forward. If you write a little bit every day, you have a lot done after a month. And it will make it easier on your brain to remember what you have done so far and where you're going. Five-minutes a day rule. I'm a big fan of the five-minutes a day rule, and I often tell this to my friends a lot. Before you go to bed each night, make sure you wrote for at least 5 min. And 5 min isn't asking too much of yourself. And many times, five-minutes would become a lot longer if you become inspired and if you don't, after five-minutes, just try it again tomorrow, you have to treat the creative process like a muscle. Muscles have muscle memory, work that muscle every day. If you wait a week to her, right, you'll spend half your time thinking about what you've already done instead of moving forward, find a ritual that helps you, right? See if you can find the time of the day that works best for you. I always recommend mornings before you go to work because this way, you'll think about your writing throughout the day. Keep the file open on your computer. Keep your writing file open on your computer constantly. This will make you think about your story more and more. Make it the last thing you look at, and the first thing you look at when you open your computer 3. Act 2: Act two starts when you hear it, Let's go their old ways and the old world, and they decide to take action and embrace change. Many times, Act two will be the start of a brand new world for your protagonist. And the Wizard of Oz. Dorothy is not in Kansas anymore. Everything in Act One was back home in Kansas and not in color. But now enact to Dorothy wakes up and a brand new world filled with color and new characters and Wonder Woman. Diana leaves her home for the first time and is now on a new adventure with Steve. In act two of the Hunger Games, keratinous leaves her home and district 12 and enters the capital Xi now prepares to fight and will enter the Hunger Games. In act two of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, hairy leaves the Dursleys family home and enters the wizarding world. Your hero doesn't need to leave their world physically, but they need to have a new way of thinking. They will meet new characters and build new relationships to keep the story moving forward. Think about their goals. And if they had one goal and X1, they might have more goals and act to with embracing change and meeting new characters. To also brings in B stories, which is another subplot. Many times, but not always. Abby's story is a love story. In Wonder Woman, Diana and Steve flirt a little bit as they set sail over the ocean and bridesmaids. And it gets pulled over by Officer roads and meets him for the first time. And Spider-Man, Peter Parker is in love with mary jane, and mary jane falls in love with Spiderman. Your BI story does not have to be a love story, but it usually involves another character and gives us a break from the a story. You can also have more than obese story too. If you have several characters, you can have a c story, a D story, ie story, etc. But make sure you're a story doesn't get lost. Keep the, a story focused. And The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy's a story and goal is to get home, but actually meets the scarecrow, the Tin Man and the car or the lion. They get their own goals which become the BI story, the story and the story. The scare crows goal is to get a brain. The tin man wants a heart, and the cowardly lion wants courage. Think about your heroes New World and how are they changing externally and internally. Also, write down their goals and brainstorm some possible be stories. Once your hero has embraced change and entered act to think about all the ways you can entertain your audience. These are the pages that are the most fun. Whatever your genre is, you want to showcase your genre in these pages. If you're writing a comedy, pump up the funny in these pages in bridesmaids, the most memorable scenes happen in this section, like when Maya Rudolph and the other bridesmaids have to go to the bathroom and they can't hold it. So Maya Rudolph has to go number two and a designer dress in the middle of the street. If you're writing a horror, the antagonist will probably start killing or haunting characters. If you're writing an adventure, then launch your hero into the adventure. In Harry Potter, all these magical things are happening is Harry enters Hogwarts. And we're showing all the awesome things that wizards can do in this world, gets super creative in these pages. You do want to push her story forward, but you also want to entertain the audience. This is the section where we also get the most quotable lines and moments. It meet the parents. Everything Greg tries to do to impress pans parents just goes wrong and backfires on him. During dinner. Greg is caught in a lie and he talks about how he used to milk his sister's cat. Greg says, you can milk anything with nipples. And Jack replies to Greg, I have nipples. Greg, can you milk me? These pages are always fun for the audience, but they might not be fun for your hero. We laugh at Greg and meet the parents, but he's not laughing at himself. He just wants things to go right? In these pages. Keep the promise of the premise. In the Hunger Games, the premise is about kids who kill each other. And this is where the kids start killing each other and warm bodies. The promise of the premise makes a story different than every other zombie story. And the premise is a love story between a zombie and a human. And this is the section where we see are the zombie start to fall in love with Julie, the human, for the first half of Act to brainstorm several entertaining moments and have fun. After delivering on the promise of the premise about halfway through your story, your hero, where the midpoint and this is a major turning point. Think about what's the major thing that happens halfway through story that could shock your main characters and elevate the story. In Jurassic Park. The midpoint is when the Tyrannosaurus Rex escapes the gates and attacks are heroes. Not the park was safe, but now it's definitely not safe anymore. And the godfather, the midpoint is when the godfathers oldest son, Sonny, is shot and killed. Sonny was next in line to be the next godfather of the family, but not anymore. Now it falls to the youngest son and protagonists, Michael This moment marked a total shift in Michael's involvement with the family business. When the story started. Michael had nothing to do with the family business. But now he's next in line to be the godfather. In psycho. The midpoint is the famous shower scene when Norman Bates kills the hero that we were following. The movie takes complete turn. After our first protagonist is dead, a similar beat happens in Gone Girl. In the first half of the movie. The girl has gone, but now she comes back and the story changes. We all thought her husband might've killed her, but that can't be the case now, if she's alive, spend time on figuring out what your midpoint is. If you're having trouble, think what is the biggest thing that can happen here? What is the one thing that creates the most conflict? From your mid point to the end of Act two, you want to raise the stakes and increase the conflict. Amp up the stakes. Wanna raise the stakes and conflict even more as they say, Let the **** hit the fan. In psycho, Norman Bates is winning as his lies, let him get away with murder. In alien. The alien keeps growing more and more. It kills crew members one-by-one, including the captain of the ship. The more people the alien kills, the bigger the alien gets. The crew tries to go after the alien, but nothing works. The alien is getting more and more powerful. Keep thinking about how the antagonists can win. Interior hero has reached their lowest point possible. This is called the all is lost moment. An alien, it's when Ellen Ripley has no one else to help her. She's all alone in the ship, just her and the alien in bridesmaids. And he has fired from the jewelry store and is kicked out of her apartment by her roommates. She then throws a tantrum and Lillian's bridal shower, Lillian than kicks Annie out of the shower and the wedding. Annie is no longer the maid of honor. Making this the all is lost. During the first half of your story. You're introducing characters, but now you may be losing characters. Often in all his last moments, characters close to your hero will die. In Happy Gilmore, happiest mentor tubs Peterson dies after seeing the alligator that took his hand away. In the Hunger Games. Ketoses friend and companion Ru, gets killed off. In Star Wars. Luke loses Obi-Wan Kenobi. Towards the end of Act two, relationships may be ending and family and friends maybe killed off. All the plans your hero is made may fail epically. These pages, think about how to make your protagonist lose. At the end of Act two, your hair out. What should be worse off than one? The story started. Here's a quick review of what to do and act to, and some advice that may help you write more. Enact to your hero must embrace change, and enter their new world. In their new world. Build some memorable and unique moments by exploding the entertainment. Towards the middle of your story, your hero will hit the midpoint. This is a major moment that will change and propel the story drastically. From there, you want to amp up the stakes, conflict, intention, as things come crashing down on your hero. Advice for you and following through. Keep moving forward. A very common pitfall that many writers fall into, recheck to is they keep rewriting the pages. They had an act one. Instead of moving forward. Rewriting is always easier than writing, but here's the thing. You're going to rewrite anyway, once you get to the end of your story and finish a first draft, only then you'll have a grand picture of your entire story. You can drive yourself crazy rewriting Act One over and over. So don't, the best thing to do for your story is to get to the end of the story and then rewrite, set times to write and do nothing else. We live in a world where distractions are so easy. And this makes writing hard, e-mails, text messages, phone calls. And just to remind is being curious about random things can distract us. But what often helps me as setting a timer on my phone and making sure I don't check my email or phone until the timer goes off. I often will do 1 h blocks. And for that period of time, I will only write. And if I mind wants to Google something, I won't Google it unless it's research for my story. If it's not, then it can wait till later. If I don't have time to do 1 h, then I'll set a timer for 20 min or even five or 10 min if it's late at night and I haven't written yet that day, stick to your deadlines. It's so easy for us to say, we'll do it later and then later becomes never. So many people have asked one of their story done and then just sit on doing Act 2.3. I'm guilty of this myself. The first screenplay I ever sold, I had the first accurate and for about eight months and never kept moving forward. And it wasn't until I sat and stick to my deadlines that I finished the script a few months later. A few weeks after that, I optioned and sold the screenplay. Keep your goals in check. Your beginning of Act two, you can have a lot of fun moments, but always keep your main character's goal and check. Let the a story drive the narrative and never stray too far away from your protagonist goal. It's also your goal to finish the story 4. Act 3: After the all is lost moment, your hero has been beaten down, but they are still alive. And where there's a will, there's a way. It often helps to think about these pages as the comeback. Give you a character hope, and prepare for the finale. Your team will assemble and work together here in the Incredibles bile that helps the family escaped from syndromes layer. And they decide to fight, send them together for the first time as a family. Before this, Mr. Incredible was working alone and hiding it from his family, but not anymore. Now, everyone is a part of it. An alien, Ripley decides to self-destruct this spaceship. There's no way she's letting the alien get to earth. She'll fly out and escape pod. The alien blow up in the spaceship behind her. In the matrix. The comeback is when Neo and Trinity go and save Morpheus. Sometimes your hero would join forces with someone else they didn't get along with before. So they can take down a common enemy. In warm bodies, the zombies and humans joined forces to take down the bones. In Independence Day, it looks like the world is over. The aliens are going to destroy the earth. But one little comment made by Jeff Goldblum is father makes Jeff Goldblum think of an idea that could save the world. In these pages, you want to give you a hero, a small glimpse of hope after they experience they're all is lost moment. The middle of Akt3 is where you have your big event. This is the section where your pen, your protagonist and antagonist against each other for the final fight. Focus on the big event or mission that your heroes must win. Happy Gilmore is the PGA championship. Pretty much in any sports movie. This is the championship or the biggest game the team has to win. And Wonder Woman, It's Diana versus Aries, the god of war. The entire movie has led to this epic fight between good and evil. In whiplash, Andrew is determined to prove he could do the drum solo. And he does that in front of everyone. In alien. Ripley thought she was safe and they escape pod. But she finds out the alien is there to blowing up the spaceship, didn't accomplish anything. Now, she has to get the alien out of the escape pod. In Independence Day. After our heroes learn how to break the barriers of the UFO, It's an all-out battle between aliens and all of humankind. Even the President of the United States goes into battle. If you're a big event has already started, this is where your hero will fight the best of the best. In the Hunger Games. After row is killed, there's only six players laughed and they all die one-by-one. The very end, It's only tetanus and peta. The capital tries to kill them both by changing the rules and releasing large amounts that are created by the capital to use against the rebels. When tetanus and Peter refused to kill each other and instead plan a double suicide by eating poisonous berries. This forces the capital to concede, and they announced that they have both won the games, right? And brainstorm your big event and think about some twists and turns that could occur during your big event. After your big event and the big bad is destroyed, it's time to wrap up all your storylines. If you have any be storylines tried to wrap this up as well. If you're Abby's story was a love story, either give your main characters a happy ending or a not so happy ending. And the godfather, we see the complete story arc of Michael. He went from the person who didn't want to be involved in the family business to now officially becoming the new Godfather. In psycho, Norman Bates is finally found out for who he is. Star Wars, a New Hope. All the main characters are given metals and the galaxy is safe for now until The Empire Strikes Back. It often helps if you're ending, can circle back to your opening. In Happy Gilmore, we started the grandma's house, and we end at the grandma's house. And the Wizard of Oz, Dorothy started in Kansas and now she's finally back home in Kansas. Eight mile starts with the rap battle and ends with a rap battle. But we see how much rabbit has changed. In the beginning, he froze on stage, but in the end, it makes the other guy freeze on stage. After you write and wrap up your storylines, it's time to rewrite and then get your story out there. Here's a quick review of what to do and act three and some advice that may help you write more. And act three, you will make a comeback after experiencing and all is lost moment. This is when they build their team and get ready for the big event. The big event is the climax of your story. The most exciting, intense, and important part of your story. If you don't have a big event already, think of one and make sure to add it to your story. After the big event, wrap up all your storylines, including your a story and NAB story, sea story, d story, etc. Writing advice. Celebrate when you finish. Take a few hours to celebrate when you finish your first draft Maybe go to dinner or say a movie you want to see. You might still have a lot of work ahead of you. But once you get to the very end, you'll have a better idea of your whole story. And finishing a first draft is a huge accomplishment. So many people think of ideas and never take the action. You took the action. And yes, there may be work ahead, but there's also worked behind you. So be proud. You did it. Keep the first draft just for you? Once you get a first draft done, I recommend taking a few days to a couple of weeks off, but don't take too much time off, you still want to keep the momentum going. You might have several ideas that you want to change or some scenes that are not good, but you wrote them just to keep the story moving forward. Rework those scenes before you send another draft to other people, set a date to get it out into the world. What's the point of writing something? It was going to sit on a shelf or stand your computer forever. But if you set a date to get it out into the world, or at least try to get it published. This will drive you to make sure it gets better and better with every revision. Rewriting tips, tightened relationships. As you write, you'll discover more about your characters and their relationships. After a first draft. Tighten their relationships even more. E.g. I. Made to my characters who were best friends. I made them sisters because friends come and go. But family is forever define your characters more. I'm sure you've discovered a bunch about your characters as you are writing. So now you can use those details to draw your characters even more. I've added a character questionnaire that can help to find your characters even more. So feel free to fill this out as you write your first draft or after you write your first draft, have emotional shifts in each scene. It often helps to think about how your heroes can go through ups and downs. If you're stuck on a scene, think about how to start the scene on a positive note for your hero and ended on a negative note or started on a negative note and ended on a positive. Make sure that main characters have arcs by the end of your story. Your hero should not be the same from when your story he started. Make sure they learned all the lessons they need by the end of your story. Don't let perfect be the enemy of the good. Be happy with what you got done. It's easy to criticize ourselves. When, when would you have done isn't perfect. But even if you struggled to write this and you know, there's a lot of rewriting ahead. You're still a lot farther than when you started this journey. Get notes and set more deadlines. Get notes and set deadlines for those two. After you take a brief time off, after the first draft, get back to work and set deadlines to send your writing to friends or people who will read your work. Tell them a date as to when you want to send it out. You have accountability. Don't wait until the day after or week after either. Do it that day. Even if it's at 11:59 P.M. that night. If you say a date, sent it to them on that date, also, ask for deadlines as to when you want notes back. I always find out there without deadlines, things just fall to the wayside. But if you have a hard deadline, people will stick with their deadlines. Listened to everyone, but follow your heart. When you ask for notes, you're gonna get a lot of notes. But that doesn't mean people know what they're talking about. They didn't slay away for hours writing your project. You did. So only take notes that you really love or you truly think will improve your work. If you're getting the same note from different people, definitely take that note into consideration. But if you apply a note that you really disagree with, chances are you're going to regret it later when your work is published. So stay true to your writer's heart. Know when the story is cooked. After you do several drafts and you know it's in good shape, let yourself be done with it. We can drive ourselves crazy, making things perfect. And often perfection is what prevents us from getting things done or putting it out into the world. At some point, you have to embrace the imperfections and let it go 5. How to Format a Screenplay: If you're brand new to screenwriting, then this quick video lesson will show you the basics of how to format a screenplay. There are many screenwriting softwares out there to choose from. For the first decade of my career, I used final draft, which was considered the industry standard at the time. But then in 2016, I discovered my favorite screen warning software, writer Duet, and I've been using writer Duet ever since. I'll be using writer Duet for this demonstration, and you can sign up and use writer Duet for free at writer duet.com. There you can write your first three scripts for free. For this quick demo, I'm going to rewrite the first page of my feature film screenplay, Leap Day. It's an ensemble comedy about the craziness, confusion, and chaos that can only happen on that extra day we get every four years. These are the basics, and this will get your story going. All right. So the first thing you do for any screenplay is fade in. You're only going to fade in once at the very beginning of the screenplay, and at the end, the last thing you do is fade out. So open a document. You'll see this. When you press Enter, you'll see all these choices. What I want to do is transition. So transition and then fade in. With a lot of screenwriting software, they make it super easy. All you have to do is press enter and you'll get choices, and you can just keep moving forward. Back in the day people had use a typewriter, but now it's super easy, and anyone can do this from anywhere. So after you fade in, then you'll start every scene with a scene heading, which is also known as a slug line. For leap day, it starts off in a hockey arena. I put interior hockey arena. You're always going to use INT for interior and EXT for exterior. Always remember, interior means inside, exterior means outside. If this scene was outside a hockey arena, I would put EXT period hockey arena. But since it's inside, I'll use INT period hockey arena, which means interior hockey arena. All right after that, then you start writing the action description. For this, I'm going to put, it's a packed house. In the third row, Lucy, who's my main character. She's 29, usually put the age after the character, and then you describe them. She wears punk rock wardrobe. I could say that word. She's frazzled because she's about to do something she's never done before. And she's with her sister right now. So talks with her sister, Jade, 31 business casual tire. She's way more professional than her sister. She's cool calm, cool, and collective. Now you'll notice, I capital put this in All Capitals. Her name, Lucy, and I put Jade in All Capitals. You only do this when you first introduce a new character. This is how the reader is going to know this character is brand new. But from this point on, I'm only going to have the first initial of Lucy's name be capitalized and the first initial of Jade's name be capitalized. After that, I'll do some dialogue. I just press enter and tab, and then I'm going to type in Lucy. Now from now on, you'll see this in all screen noting software. It's going to keep this name. It's going to be easier for me to write and I'll just pop up, and I'll show you that in a second. I can't believe I'm going to do this. Then again, enter, and then I press tab, bring dialogue again, I'll type in Jade. You and Tommy have been together. It's okay to misspell things. I do it all the time. It's about time you got engaged. If you're figuring this out now, Lucy's about to ask her boyfriend to marry her. So I'll put Lucy hold a ring and looks at the empty seat. Next to her. Then I press enter again, tab because I'm going to go back to dialogue and you see SCR pops up Lucy. I got to use press L and then boom. It gives me that press L and then enter, and it fills in the rest of the name. I don't just keep typing in Lucy every time I put in dialogue. I'll put in L and it'll find it for me. I don't know about this. And then I'll again enter tab. There's J. J just pops up. If there's only two characters, you screen software, we read like who's going to be next. I'll put women, propose to men all the time. Especially on Leap Day. It's a Leap Day tradition. It is. I've done a bunch of research on Leap Day, and this actually is a huge tradition. Take a leap. Then, I just pressed tab again. And then I'll write down Lucy. I'll go, Okay. Okay. I'm leaping. And then I'm going to introduce Lucy's boyfriend. I'll start typing an action description again. They look behind them. As Lucy's boyfriend, enters the aisle. I'm going to describe him. He's a blond. You always describe the character, especially main characters. You don't need to describe minor characters. L say, you just have a random I know waiter. You don't need to describe that person, but any time as a main character, you want to give them a little description. The reader knows this person is important and they're forwarding the story. He's a blond, tatted up 29. You year old musician. Named Rocket. Again I'm going to capitalize. Just for now I'm going to capitalize his name in all caps because this is a brand new character. This makes it easier for the reader to know, this is a brand new character. Rocket launcher Tommy. As you can see, the screen software doesn't know, I have a new character in the dialogue, but it will from this point on. I put a Rocket Tommy, and then I do his dialogue. I'm not going to do all caps anymore. Hey, sweetie, here. I got us all more beers. Anything else you need before the third period. Again, as you can see, it has all the characters now that I've written so far. As I add more characters, they'll just show up. All I got to do is just type in the first initial and it'll just pop up automatically. All screen learning software does this pretty much. I'll just have type in L. Lose using it pops up, press Enter, and then that's it. No, honey, that's all. That's that's the basics. This scene goes on for another four pages, but I don't want to waste your time and keep showing you things I just shown you. That's pretty much all you got to know. This scene a Jade leaves, and then Lucy gets down on one knee and there's a big announcement in the hockey arena. Then the camera goes on Lucy and rocket Launcher Tommy. By the way, Rocket launch Tommy, yes, it's a parody of what's his name, Machine Gun Kelly. But anyway, Lucy proposes to Rocket Launcher Tommy and rocket Launcher Tommy says, No and breaks up with her in front of thousands of people. This is the first scene of my screenplay leap day. But that's it. If after this scene, again, this isn't a full scene yet. But the scenes four pages long, but after the scene, when you want to start a new scene, again, you just go to a new scene. If I wanted to do a new scene, say I want to do a coffee shop. I could do INT period again, which means interior and then coffee shop. Again, the screening software will remember the different locations. If ever wanted to go back to the hockey arena, it'll remember it. I'll just put day. As you can see, there's day, night, continuous later moments later in morning. The two you use the most are day and night. You can use the other ones, continuous, especially use if you're going from inside a building to outside a building and it's a It's continuous within the scene. You use that every again, but really the basics are day and night. Those are the ones you'll use the most, and you can use these other ones if you like. But day and night are the ones you'll see the most. I'll just put into your coffee shop and then keep going. Whatever next scene is. Lucy drinks coffee. Blah, blah, blah. If you're like me and you make spelling and grammar mistakes, you can go back and fix them later. I always tell my clients progress is more important than perfection. The first screenplay I ever sold had a bunch of misspellings when I looked back at it years later. But the reason it sold is because the story was great. And if you have an amazing story, people don't notice those mistakes because they're so into the story. If you like to see the first ten pages of Leap Day or other script examples, you can find these on my website at WWW Jordan emola.com slash Examples. 6. I'm audience of teams and teachers during class. Please welcome the President of your student government and Junior. Was he walks on stage and you've probably seen him in the back alley. He's known as installer and it's all more. Once we combine making deals and cooking all into one show, you. The rules of the games are easy. Every suitcase as an ingredient that you use because a meal or makes them more to it. Delicious meal with their ingredients wins the game. Oh, I'm still going to cooking. You're going down the secret ingredient. It only using Green's down to the suitcase. Worst case model. Steven. The audience go wild as Carlos exits carrying several suitcases, should I really be the only person doing this sentence would have to get the job done. Well, I guess that's true. Okay. After reading a draft or two of the script or scripts, now it's time to do a table Read. A table Read is when you get a group of actors or friends together and assign character roles to all of them and have them act out the entire script. You can do this in your living room or do it on Zoom if it's more convenient for everyone. The good thing about having a table Read and real life is if it's a comedy, you can hear the labs. But either way, you'll be able to feel the flow and feel what scenes are too short and what scenes are too long. You'll feel the rhythm of the whole script. Kill your darlings. After each table Read is time to cut anything that doesn't work. For Writers, we call this kill your darlings or kill your babies. There may be a line of dialogue or whole scene that just doesn't work and you need to cut it to make the script better. You might rewrite something or just cut an idea altogether. Often, the more simple something is, the better it is. Any scenes that may be confusing or complicated. Make them simple. Try out different actors. After you do your first table Read, rewrite the script and make it better. Then do another table Read. It may be beneficial to you to have a whole new group of friends or actors the second time around, or at least switch the rows up. You never know what different actors will bring to your characters. Sometimes actors even mess up their dialogue, but the way they say it or the sound they make is so unique and funny that I will change the script to what they did. Listen to all the notes. But follow your heart when applying them. After every Read. Asked for notes from your friends, ask questions. But more importantly, watch the actors and your friends as they read it. Don't be part of the table. Read, just take it in. See if the jokes work and at the pace works and ask for notes from everyone there. Sometimes people are shy with giving notes. But once they start with OneNote than one node leads to another and another. When you get notes, trust your instincts. You're going to get a lot of notes from a lot of people. Some of those ideas, maybe you're really good and you may want to apply them. But some nodes might just be terrible. You can get a good note and a terrible note from the same person. I write down all my notes from different people, but I usually only apply about 20 to 40% of the notes I get 8. Table Read part 1: Back in 2020, the satiety or of our lives. And at the height of the pandemic, if you lived in a different city away from your family, then you probably couldn't travel home that year for Christmas. So I decided to write a christmas comedy movie about a family who couldn't see each other in person for Christmas. So they planned their dysfunctional and chaotic Christmas party over Zoom. The movie is titled Christmas vacation, and you can watch it for free right now on Tooby. The following is a tale of the script that took place about a month before we started production. I wanted to demonstrate how a script can change for the better with every table Read. If you watch Christmas vacation, you'll see a lot of changes and some things that stay the same from this table Read and the movie. Some changes included jokes in here that didn't work. So I rewrote those scenes and jokes. Another major change is that this table Read has many songs. But after talking with my entertainment attorney, I found out I couldn't use those songs. So I had to rewrite an entire new storyline for my character James. I hope you enjoy this. If you'd like to check out Christmas vacation, you can find the platforms it's dreaming on and where to find the DVD at www.xmissstaycation.com. Enjoy this table. Read a Christmas vacation room alone a lot for Christmas. There's just one thing on the interior Video called day James, 31, handsome, soothing voice sings day his wife, Alice, 31, blonde, sassy and the dork. I don't care about the prisms. Nice little Christmas tree edges wall Gene Fama. More than you could. No, no, no, no. No. You can't sing. All I want for Christmas is you to your mom. Why not? Look like you have the hots for your mother? Good point. Didn't think of that angle. You said you wanted to make her presence. So if you will, cover a song, at least make it your own. Okay. Make make a song my own. Hey, your dad just texted me, asked me when we're getting to the airport. Oh, that's weird. You told them we can't come home for Christmas, right? No. I couldn't break his heart. It's Christmas Eve morning. I just looked at tickets. If we leave now, it's only 3,200. Sweetheart, we maxed out every credit card before Halloween. Do we have any rich friends? Now, even our porphyrin, find those two port or hanging out with not enough, we can't be together for Christmas. We both lost their jobs and I'm back to being a trucker. I'm sure he understands. I didn't tell them any of that either that yet either. Honey, can you can you call with me, please? His heart it he should be just waking up. Your video called day Allison James call Hank, early 60s gray hair, that vibe. Hey Dad, How are you? Oh, I'm sorry. Are you feeling betrayed? I did. Kids, not URLS, but my other two disappointments and Charlotte and Tommy, do they just canceled one after the other and canceled coming home for Christmas. Really? Yeah. So I mean, who tells her father that on Christmas Eve morning? I am at least I have one daughter and son-in-law who loved me enough to visit a lonely old man on Christmas. Nobody talks for an awkward while. Why has nobody talking? This is a hard conversation, but Alice, we need to tell him. We can't tell him now. Telling me why. Nothing dead body. We love you. Alice kicks hangout. Did you just kick your dad out of the video call? This time while I talk to Charlotte and Tommy, interior Video called day the Charlotte 33, a badass, stylish chef. And Tommy, 26, the baby boy of the family who eats oatmeal. Why didn't you to tell me you're not going home for Christmas. You didn't tell us. I told everyone I couldn't make it months ago. Nobody pays attention to what you say. Make this quick. I have to get to my job. What job? I'm a Zoom Santa Claus. Thank you. Talk to kids online. I wish it was just kids. Flashback to interior. It's good money and I need it when it comes back home on Christmas morning, what did you buy her engagement ring? You're going to ask her to marry, you know, I'm going to ask if she has a sister, what do you think I'm going to do? That's great news. Yes. I'm asking her hand in marriage the minute she steps out of the airport, It's been ten months, but she can finally cross the border on Christmas day. I'm so happy you're getting engaged, but let's talk about dad. Yeah, there's gotta be a way that we can be together without being together. Weight does, it's right in front of us. Oatmeal. Now, let's throw dad a Zoom Christmas party. I don't know if there'll be end of that. Old people in technology don't mix, will make our actual Christmas invite our extended family, but it's even better because we don't have to smell them. Plus with her last name being gloom Gordy. It'll be a gloom guardian Zoom party. Okay, well, you're going to need to invite Kyle and great aunt Linda. So smelly. Don't forget uncle squibs. I did have plans with my friend Charlotte. Don't you have a girlfriend now? I bring her Emily and I broke up on Thanksgiving. Okay. Never mind. Thanks for reminding me though. What's the Hausa in the whole family will be there. Please. Not Aunt Linda? Yes. We have to invite her. My Christmas present myself was not seeing her his family. Well, I had to close it down because of the pandemic. Oh, my God. I'm so sorry about that. Yeah, me too. I miss it every day. My morning routine has been messed up for months. Your breakfast sandwiches they made every morning better and the salsa. So fresh and your soups or they were like flu vaccines. Wow, thank you. So do you think I have a shot of being your chef at the garden villa? I would love to hire you as a cook. Thank you so much. So I'm super grateful right now. But, but, but sorry, I meant to say but quicker, you wouldn't give me a chance to sneak in there. Oh, go on and tell me the butt. Fun decision is up to the owner of the garden villa, Sylvia Pratt. But I will definitely say to her your mic first choice. Okay. Thanks. Yeah, that sounds good. I actually have three more interviews today, but this is by far my first choice. Good. I'm talking to Sylvia in the afternoon, but I'll call you asap. Perfect. Your video called day cousin Kyle video chats with Alice idle. We're planning a Zoom Christmas party tomorrow because me, Charlotte and Tommy can't make it to dad's house. I loved the pod. Funny how you never bring a plus one. Mom. I'm on the phone. All I want for Christmas is for you to date someone dated someone three years ago. You didn't like her. She was a creature who lived under the highway. Living on her highway for each or dating is hard right now. While you do is sit at home watching those cartoons all day, I'll just walk farther away. Hold on. And I may not courtroom of it. You want every object tomorrow? I'll bring it day tomorrow. I believe it when I see it, I have a better chance of seeing Santa Claus. Kyle finally walks away. I'll you really need to stop living at home. You a rough patch for me. You been in a rough patch since you graduated from high school. Next room, the party starts at five. Now, convinced my father not going to come. I don't know. He didn't he doesn't want to be on a computer screen for Christmas. I have a way to solve that Hey, mom, interior Video called day great aunt Linda calls Hank. This time we just see her chin. Hello. Who is this? A hanky boy, if Glenda.
