1. Introduction: Hello everyone. My name is senior and I'm an illustrator and graphic designer. In today's class, we're going to create a minimal vector portrait in Adobe Illustrator. During the class, we're going to be tracing a reference picture and working with the simple shapes and a bunch of tools to create a nice-looking illustration. As a result, you learn how to use the different sorts of Adobe Illustrator. And we'll be able to make a minimalistic portrait of yourself or of your loved ones. Or at least you can create a modern illustration and use it as a sticker, postcard, some digital project or whatever you want. So if you are ready larger software and let's begin.
2. Face outline: It has been said before the day we're creating a minimal vector portraits. And the first thing we'll do is creating a new document. Let's go and select any precedence you like. And we will write down 1, 0, 0, 0, 0 for both width and height boxes. Let you got that color mode is RGB and the raster effects are high, or 300 ppi when it's all done, ledgers heat creates into this glass. We're going to be working with the reference picture. You can find these exact picture into the project and restaurants app and use it. Or you can use any other picture that you'd like to recreate during this class. So download or find another picture, move it from your downloaded folder and paste it into your new documents. When we have the picture insulin new documents, we need to position it onto the canvas and resize it as we are creating the portrait will need just the upper part of the body as a reference. Hold down Alt and Shift key on the keyboard and drag the bottom anchor point diagonally down. When you're satisfied with the size of your reference picture, we'll go to the Layers panel and click twice on the area near the list name into the new pop up window, we need to activate the template checkbox that will deem the reference picture and it will be easier for us to trace it when we activated the template checkbox, religious heat. Okay, now you can see that we have the deemed object. And if we take a look at the layers panel will see that this layer is now locked. That means that our reference picture is preserved from any adjustments. When we have the templates, we need to create a new layer. So let's go to the bottom of this panel and click on this icon. When we have the new layer weights, bring the color scheme to these documents. You can find the color scheme in a project and resources tab and open it into your Adobe Illustrator. Now let's go straight to the color scheme tab and see what we have here. Here we have a bunch of swatches that we'll use in our illustration. So let's go to the Lyft Uber and select the selection. So with the selection, so we will hover or our swatches and click on them with the left mouse button. When the swatches are selected, we will hold down my left mouse button and drag the swatches to the new document, place them somewhere where they won't bother you when the whole workspace is prepared, we can start tracing the peak chat and we will start from the face. So let's go to the left toolbar and grab the pencil. With the pencil will go straight to the canvas, zoom the canvas by hitting Control plus a few terms for a more comfortable work. As for the colors, for now, let's just go to the left so Uber get the strokes and get rid of the few books when the Fill box is selected, click on the icon now to get rid of the fill box color for this drug will go to the upper toolbar and select, for example, a black color. Increase the stroke weight by hitting the up arrow a few times. Now we need the strokes just to see what we are creating. It will have no impact on the future illustration. We prepared almost everything we need, but let's just do one more thing. We will bring their rulers for the workspace. They will be very useful for us during the process of creating the illustration. So let's go to the View. Rulers Show Rulers. You will see that we have the rulers on the top and on the left side, when we have the rulers, they give us an opportunity to bring up the guidelines that will help us to create a peak chat. Let's go to the left ruler and hover over this ruler area until we see the white arrow as a coarser, hold down the left mouse button and when the arrow change its color, move your mouse and the new guideline to the center of the face. Let's say that we are guided by the nose. So the center will be somewhere here as we are creating a minimalistic illustration and as we're trying to simplify everything, we're going to be using a lot of mirroring and the rulers will be very helpful in that case, when we have the guideline, we can start creating the first elements on the illustration. And it has been said before, we are starting with the face to ease our lives. We're going to be recreated just one side of the face. So let Zoom the Canvas once again and we'll trees the face with straight lines. We are going to be putting the anchor points to the most concave and to the most complex parts of the face. These other parts where the line is going to be changing its curvature. So let's go along their face and put the anchor points to the most convex and to the most concave parts. Don't overdo it. We don't need a lot of anchor points. Five will be enough and we need to close the shape. If the lines are looking so thick, you can go to the left toolbar and grab my selection tool, select the lines and decrease the stroke weight on the upper toolbar when we have the straight lines in the closed shape, Let's go to the folder with a pencil and click on it with the right mouse button into this folder will select the anchor point. The anchor point x2 will help you to turn the straight lines into the nice curves. And it is probably the easiest way of making the curves with the anchor point. So you can hover over the lines and cheese the curvature by dragging them to the sites. So for example, let's start from the top, hover over the line, somewhere in the middle of it. Hold down the left mouse button and drag the line up, thereby turning it into the curve. When you see that your new curve is repeated, the reference picture face outline, you can unfold your left mouse button. Also, if you want to change the curve even more and more precisely, you can play with the handles when you're done with Blaine with the first line, Let's continue turning the other straight lines into the curves by using the same principle, hoover over the lines and drag them to the sides by repeating the face outlined from the reference peak check. It doesn't matter if you are not tracing the image with a 100 percent similarity, we just need a basic lines that are somehow resembling the reference peak track. When recurved all the lines, we can see that we have a few problems with the anchor points. Some of them are too sharp and we get a smooth lines. Let's go to the left, Uber and select the Direct Selection tool with the Direct Selection. So we can click on this sharp anchor points and we'll see that it invokes a little target nearby. We can hover over this target, hold down the left mouse button and drag it to this side to create a nice smooth line. Let's repeat the same steps on the bottom part of the gene and on the cheekbones, we hover over this target, hold down the left mouse button and drag it to this side until we see a nice smooth line checkout, either a more of the sharp angles and fix them by using these methods when you have the perfect face outline, we need to add any year. So deselect everything by clicking on some blank space with the selection tool. And let's start making the ear. We'll get back to the pen tool and we'll create a triangle on this side that will represent the ear. And again, we need the closed shape when the shape is closed and when the triangle is ready, let's take the anchor point tool and try to recreate the shape of the ear with the curves. Just keep in mind that we are creating a minimalistic illustration. And it's not necessary for us to make an anatomically correct year. So when we had the shape that resembles the year, we can adjust it even more by bleed with the handles and by smoothing in the sharp anchor points. Continue playing with the handles. And when you have a satisfactory result, we'll do the following. We'll go to the Lyft Uber and we'll grab the selection. So with the selection, so we'll select both the year and the quarter on the face, go to the left toolbar and select the shape builder tool. We're going to be united these objects together. If you hover over the area with the shape builder tool, you'll see that it's starting to look kind of selected. So to connect these two parts together, we need to hold down the left mouse button and draw the line going through these two shapes. When you see that the both parts are selected and hold your left mouse button. Now we need to select the outline with the selection tool. And when it's selected, we'll go to the Stroke panel on the upper toolbar and choose round gaps and round corners for the lines, you will see that the corners appearance changed. Now let's fix the corner here on the ear will go to the left. So Uber and select the Direct Selection Tool, select the anchor point and drag the target diagonally down to smooth and the sharp corner. Now when we have all the elements we need, we can make a copy on the other sides, and these guideline will be very useful. Now we need to select this line with the selection tool and grab the reflect tool. You can find it in the folder with the rotate tool. Now you can see that we have a blue targets and we need to put it on the top anchor point at the intersection of the phase line and the guideline. When it's done, we'll hold down the Alt key on the keyboard and drag the shape to the other sides. Hold down the Shift key to make sure that your agent the second half on one line. Now let's go to the left toolbar and grab the selection tool will select both of these objects and we'll go to the bath finder panel. If you don't have the Pathfinder panel somewhere on the right, we will go to the tab window and choose Pathfinder here. Into the Pathfinder panel, we need to click Unite. You can see that now we don't have the line in the center and that's exactly what we need. Let's check out whether there are some places that we need to fix. For example, we can change the curve on the top. So we'll select the line and we'll play with the handles. Pay attention to the general guidelines. They will help you with creating this move shape, Chicka, the bottom anchor points and fix it if it's needed. And that's it for the fees outline in the next part of the class will focus on nostrils and leaps.
3. Nostrils & Lips: When we have the quantity of the face, Let's move on to the features. And in this part, we'll create nostrils and leaps. So for the nostrils will do the following. Let's go to the left. So Uber endplates hoover over the rectangle tool. We'll click on it with the right mouse button and choose the Ellipse tool in a dropdown menu. When the ellipsoid is in your hands, let Zoom the Canvas and let's create a circle of the size of the nostril on the reference peak chat. So hold down the Shift key and create the circle. When we have the ellipse, we need to guard the bottom part of it to recreate the shape of the nostril. So let's go to the left toolbar and select the rectangle tool. With the rectangle tool will create a rectangle, one side of which will go a bit above the center of the ellipse. When we have these two shapes, Let's select them both with the selection. So now go to the left toolbar and grab the shape builder tool with the shape builder tool, hover over the extra part and hold down the Alt key on your keyboards. If you see a little minus eigen near the coarser, you're doing everything right when the area is selected and when you're holding down the Alt key on your keyboard, just click on this area with the left mouse button. Do the same for the bottom part of the ellipse. When we have the nostril, Let's go to the left toolbar and grab the selection. So ruts in the nostril just a little bit, change the placement if you need it. And let's make a copy on the right side so we already know what to do. We need to select this object. We need to go to the left toolbar and 20 to select their reflect to put the reflect tool target right on the vertical guideline because this is our center when it's positioned correctly, Let's hold down the Alt key on the keyboard, and let's drag the nostril to the other sides. Hold down the Shift key to make sure that you are adding the second nostril on the same line when it's done, and hold your left mouse button and on-hold all the keys on the keyboard. That's it for the nostrils. So let's move on to the leaps. Let's grab the selection tool and click on some blank area to deselect the nostril. So again, for the leaves, we're going to be creating the lines just on the one side and then coping them on the other sides. Now let's go to the left toolbar and select the band saw with the pencil will recreate the shape with straight lines. So again, we are putting the anchor points on the most convex and concave parts. Let's start from the corner of the lips. Would the first anchor points and go through the comics and concave parts, close the shape and when you're ready, let's go to the left toolbar and select the anchor point tool. With the anchor point tool will convert the straight lines into the curves, hover over the lines and drag them to the sides until you have the needed curves. Just try to recreate the shape of the leaves that we have on the reference peak track. Now let's work on this anchor point to make the smoother line. So we will go to the left toolbar and we will select the direct selection tool. Let's zoom the canvas and select the anchor point that we are going to be changing. Drag the target zone until you have a smooth line. When you have a nice smooth shape, Let's make a copy. On the other side, grab the selection tool, select your lines, and then grab the reflect tool, the target on the top anchor points that is intersecting the guideline. Let's hold down the Alt key and drag the shape to the other side. Hold down the Shift key to make sure that you are creating the second half on the same line when it's all done, and hold your left mouse button and unholy keys on your keyboard now have two halves. So let's combine them together. Greatness selection tool and select both of these shapes. Go to the bed finder panel and hit Unite IV. There is a need. You can work on smoothening the anchor points. And if everything is alright, let's move on to the boards and leap. So again, we will go to the left toolbar and select the Pen tool. Let's recreate the shape of the boards and leap. Let's try to connect the leaves. So put the first anchor points on the already existing anchor point of the upper leap. Recreate this shape with straight lines. Close the shape and when you're ready, grab the anchor point x2 and let's curve the lines. If you want to change the placement of the anchor points, or if you want to play with the handles, grab the direct selection tool and fix what you need. When you're ready. Let's make the copy on the other side by using their reflect to put the target on the top anchor point that is at the intersection with a guideline. When it's then hold down the Alt key and drag the shape to the other sides. Hold down the Shift key to make sure that the parts are placed on one line when it's done. And hold your left mouse button and on-hold all the keys on your keyboard. When we have two parts, Let's select them both and go to the Pathfinder panel to click Unite. If you want to change anything or if you want to play with smoothening the anchor points, go straight to the direct selection tool. And that's it for this part of the class. In the next part, we'll end the glasses, the eyebrows, and the accessories.
4. Glasses + Eyebrows + Accessories: Now let's move on to the next elements. So let's start from the glasses. We will go to the left toolbar and we will select the pen tool. We will recreate the shape of the glasses by using the street lines. Let's put the first anchor point in the center of the upper part of the glasses go along the shape. Anchor points on the most convex and concave parts glows the shape and let's get back to the anchor point. So with the anchor point, so start creating the curves. Try to repeat the shape of the reference picture glasses, or at least make it quite similar. If you need play with the handles. When we have this shape, Let's work on the anchor points by smoothening them, grab the direct selection, so select any that anchor points and drag them to the side until you have a smooth line. When we have this shape, Let's get back to the selection. So and we'll make the copy of the shape to create the frame. We won't recreate the thin frame from the reference will create a thicker one to create the copy hit Control C, Control Shift V while the object is selected, that will add the copy and pasted right at the same place. When we have the copy, we need to resize it. So hold down Alt and Shift key on the keyboard and drag one of the corners diagonally to the sides. A, just the size and 20 are satisfied. And hold your left mouse button and all the keys on the keyboard when you have a nice shape for the glasses body, Let's create this shape for the breach. And again, we're just making one side at the time. So deselect the glasses and let's grab depends. So recreate the sheep with straight lines and close it. Use the anchor point so to change the curvature. Use the direct selection tool to play with the handles if you need it. As we're making the copy on the other side, we need to make sure that we are creating an accurate half. So check out the anchor points on the right. They should be positioned right on the center guideline, a justice anchor points if it's needed and adjust the sheep in general. When you're satisfied with the sheep, we need to do the following. We need to go to the left toolbar and grab the selection tool, select the shape that we created for the breach in the frame of the glasses. So when these two shapes are selected, we will go to the left toolbar and we will select the Shape Builder tool. With the shape builder tool, we need to connect these two shapes together. So just hold down your left mouse button and draw the line. Let's fix these anchor point. So selected with the direct selection tool and drag the target up until you have a nice curve. So when you're satisfied with the curve, we need to select all the shapes that belonged to the glosses and we need to make the copy on the other sides when everything is selected, Let's go to the left toolbar and select the reflect tool with the target on the upper anchor point that is at the intersection with the guideline. Pull down the Alt key and drag the copy on the other sides. Hold down the Shift key to make sure that you are creating it on one line. Now let's select that to frame shapes with the selection tool and go to the Pathfinder panel to connect them. So hit Unite in the bed finder pan out. That's it for the glasses. The last thing that we will create 40 phase features will be the eyebrows. For the eyebrows, we will go to the Lyft Uber and select the line segment. So with the line segments, so we will create just a straight line. So put their first anchor points and without holding your left mouse button, put the second anchor point on the other sides. When we have the straight line, we will grab the anchor points X2 and we will recreate the broker curvature that we have on the reference peak chat. If you need to change anything, use the direct selection tool, move the handles and Inca points the way you like. When we have the line, we need to change its appearance. Let's go to the left toolbar, grab the selection tool, and we will once again select this line. When we have the selection, we can go to the upper toolbar and change the appearance of the line. So inter this dropdown menu, Let's choose the width profile five, you can see that the line appearance changed and we can increase the stroke weight, but we can see that direction of this line is wrong, so we need to flip it horizontally. So let's go to the Stroke panel on the right. If you don't have the Stroke panel here, you can go to the tab window and choose the stroke there. Incident stroke panel. We need to go to the bottom of it and click on this icon that will flip along the stroke direction. When we have the right direction, we can play with the stroke weight. If you want to change it even more, we can go to the left toolbar and choose the width to width, the width tool, we can go along this line and we can change its appearance. For example, if we wanted to make it a bit thicker on the right side, we can hover over the right side of the path, hold down the left mouse button and drag them out to the side, thereby changing the width of the line. If you want to make the left side of the brush a bit thinner, you can repeat the width to action on the left sides. When you have the needed results, we will do the following. We'll convert that back into the shape. Do this conversion only after you're satisfied with the size and the width of your bro, because we won't be able to keep changing in that freely as before. So when you're ready, let's go to the tab Object and click Expand Appearance. Now it's a shape and we can make a copy on the other sides. So when it's selected with the selection, so we will go to the left sober and we will select the reflect tool with the reflect. So we will put the target on the guideline, hold down the Alt key on the keyboard and make the copy on the other sides. Hold down the Shift key to make sure that you are making the bros on one line. When it's done. Let's deselect everything and let's see what we have here. We won't trace the eyes because we are going to be making the dark sunglasses. So we'll leave the face as it is right now. Let's finish up this part of the class by aging the earrings and a little accessory for the nose. So let's start with the earrings. Let's go to the left side of the documents and please grab the Ellipse tool with the ellipse. So we will create this circle. So hold down the Shift key. Now, we'll work just with the stroke after turning the burrow into the shape, the color books is swapped and now we have the field color instead of the stroke. So swarmed the color boxes and increase the stroke weight. When we have this circle, Let's got it right in the middle. Go to the left toolbar, select the rectangle tool and create the rectangle that will go through the center of the ellipse, select both shapes and let's get rid of the right parts. Grab the shape builder tool, hold down the Alt key and draw the line through the extra parts or get rid of them separately. When we have this shape legis booted on the year. And when you're satisfied with the placement, we will create the copy on the other sites, use the reflect tool, put the target on the guideline, and make the copy on the other sides. For now, we won't connect the earrings with the ears. Select just leave them as they are. Let's move on and add a little rink for the nose. Firstly, let's deselect everything and Zoom the Canvas. Then go to the left toolbar, select the ellipse tool and create analysis. Make sure that it's center is in the center of the face. Let's again grab the rectangle tool and we will get rid of that. So part of the ring, when we have both the Rectangle and the Ellipse, let's grab the selection tool and select these two objects. We will go to the left, so Uber and select the Shape Builder tool. With the shape builder tool, we will get rid of that. So parts of these elements. Now let's grab the selection. So and we can move this ring up by using the arrow keys on the keyboard or just the mouse. Now we have all the lines that we need for the phase. And that means that it is the end of this part of the class. In the next part, we will focus on recoloring the shapes.
5. Coloring the face elements: When we have all the elements that we need for the face, we can start recoloring the shapes. Let's start by selecting the face outline. Then go to this watches and grab the eyedropper tool from the left toolbar with the eyedropper CSU, we will hover over the first swatch and click on it with the left mouse button. You can see that appearance changed and now we don't have the stroke, we have just a few color. We will use this recoloring method with all the elements we have. So let's again go to the left toolbar, grab the selection tool, and we will start selecting the elements one by one and recoloring them, deselect the face, select the nostrils, grab the eyedropper tool, hover over the fifths, watch and click on it to recolor the selected elements. When you recolor the nostrils, deselect them. And let's move on and select the leaps to select multiple objects. Just hold down the Shift key on the keyboard for the leaves, Let's copy the appearance of the first swatch. So go to the left toolbar, select the eyedropper tool, hover over the first swatch and click on it, get back to the Canvas and check out your results. Also lets recolor the area between the leaps. But firstly, we need to create the shape for this area because now it doesn't exist. So let's select both leaps, Zoom the Canvas, and let's go to the left toolbar. We will select the Shape Builder tool, hover over the inner area between the lips and click on it with the left mouse button, we created a new shape. You can see that now we have the upper lip, we had the shape for the inner part, and we have the sheep for the boards and leap. So let's get back to the selection. So deselect the leaps and select the inner parts. When the ship is selected, Let's get back to the eyedropper tool and copy the appearance of the fourths watch to create the teeth. Now let's recolor the frame of the glasses. So selected first, go to the left. So grab the eyedropper tool and we'll copy the appearance of the twelfths, which for now. Now you can not just that we don't have the inner parts of the glasses, but we can solve this problem by selecting this area and by hitting Control plus left square bracket a few times until we see the strokes for the inner elements. Now let's select both of these elements and we will go to the left toolbar and select the 12th swatch again. And it will change the appearance of the frame by using this sixths watch. You can always adjust the colors or select a different from the swatches once by using the color picker window. For now, let's just leave it like that. Let's move on to the eyebrows and copy the appearance of these sixths. Watch again. And the last thing is that weeds are recolor, are these earrings and the ring in the nose. So let's select all of these shapes, go to the swatches, and we will select the yellow color from 11 swatch. And that's it for these parts. In the next one, we're going to be making the hair.
6. Making Hair: So when we recolored only features, Let's continue by making the hair. So for the hair, we will go to the left toolbar and we will select the ellipse tool with the ellipsoid. We will create the ellipse right from the center of the illustration. So hoover, over the guideline, hold down the left mouse button, hold down the Alt and Shift key on the keyboard and create the ellipse. Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to position it correctly. Of course, you don't see what's going on here. So let's do the following. When this object is selected, we will click on it with the right mouse button and we will choose arrange, send to back. Now you can freely adjusted as you want, if you want to make sure that you are recreating the shape of the hair from the reference picture, you can swim the color boxes just for the second and checkout whether you want to change the shape. When you're satisfied with the ellipse, let's warp the color boxes back. Now let's go to the left toolbar and select the eyedropper CSU. When this object is selected, we will click on this sevenths watch. You can probably not just that, it is not the hair that we want to create. So let's go and apply an FX to create a nice girls. So when this object is selected, we will go to that step as Effect distort and Transform and zigzag. Firstly, in the new pop up window, we will hit the preview box. Now we need to select the smooth points. You can see that it has the wavy effect, but it's not what we need. So we can play with the size of the curls, and we can play with the religious burst segments. Drag the target on the sliders, or go to these little windows and just use your mouse wheel to change the values. I'm live the values as 10 pixels for the size and nine ridges per segment. If you want to select the different values, you are welcome to do it when you're satisfied with the result. Let's just hit, Okay. Now you can see that the path and the actual line that we created with an effect are looking a bit differently. And it's not what we need. Go to the tab object and we need to choose Expand Appearance. Now when everything looks fine, Let's just make the hair and little bit prettier. We're going to be creating two more segments and will achieve it by making the copies and by resizing the corpus. Let's create the first copy. Use the Control C and Control Shift V on your keyboard. When the copy is ready, move it to the side, heat control plus left square bracket a few times until you see that all the face elements are upfront. For now will swarm the color boxes because it will be easier for us to see what we're doing, reposition and resize the elements. We're creating this segment in the hair, which will recover differently, make one more copy of this elements to create one more segment for the hair. Hit Control C, Control Shift V, and then resize it right away. For our convenience, let's select the different color for the strokes. So select them, click twice on the Stroke box and choose the color to be able to see the difference from the main hair. For the second stroke, you can copy the appearance of the previous one. Reposition the corporate shapes by bearing in mind that we are creating the segments that will recolor differently. When you're satisfied with the placement, Let's select these three objects together. Go to the left toolbar and select the Shape Builder tool. We will get rid of the extra parts. So hold down the Alt key while selecting them and click on them with the left mouse button. Combine the smaller parts with a larger shapes to create a clean, solid shape and hold the Alt key to unite the parts. Now we can start recoloring the segments. So let's go and grab the selection tool, select the first shape, go to the swatches and select the eighth swatch with the eyedropper to select the next one, and we'll copy the appearance on the 9th swatch, send the shape backwards. So again, hold the Control key and hit the left square bracket a few times until you see the needed results. And that's it for the hair. In the next part of the class, we'll be recreating their body.
7. Adding Body: You can notice that we have the extra parts on the face that we don't need. So let just select them and get rid of them. And when we have this result, we will be recreating the shape of the body. But as we created the hair firstly, we can hardly see the body that we need to recreate. So let's select all the hair elements and we will go to Object Hide Selection. All the elements will still be in the same place, but will be hidden for our convenience. Now let's go to the left toolbar and select the Pen tool. We again will be recreating the sheep with straight lines. So put the anchor points on the most concave or convex parts and then close the shape. For now we won't recover the shape, will use just the stroke. So select any color for the stroke and increase the stroke weight to work more comfortably when you have the basic stroke, Let's grab the anchor point x2 and start making the curves. If you need to change the appearance of some anchor points to make them a bit smoother, you can use the direct selection tool. You'll find a late start adding the additional lines that will lately convert into separate shapes. We need to add the lines for the arm and for the clause. So deselect everything. Grim depends. So, and let's start creating the lines. When you're done with the line, you just hit the Enter key on your keyboard, then grab the anchor point tool and make the curve. Adjust the curvature and continue aging the lines units to make the lines they way they could be converted into the shapes. So the potential shapes should be closed. You need to create a new lines and intersect them with it already exist in lines. When we have all the lines that we need, we can turn them into the shapes. So select all the lines that we created for the body. And let's go to the left toolbar and select the Shape Builder tool. With the shape builder tool, we will hover over the shapes and we will click on them with the left mouse button. Let's start from the right side when you need to combine two shapes together and convert them into one solid shape, hold down the left mouse button and draw the line, go through all the elements and convert them into the sheep's. If some parts don't want to be converted into the shapes, checkout lines have the intersections, fix them if it's needed. So when he turns all the lines into the shapes, Let's deselect everything and let's start recovering the parts. Select the skin elements, and let's pick the same color as we have on the face. You can see that we are experiencing the same problem as we had with the hair.
