1. Welcome to Class: A few years ago, I was struggling to survive. As an orphan in university, I had no money, no skills, and no idea how to support myself. But then I discovered online work, and it changed everything. This class, I'll guide you step by step through the process of starting your own online career. We'll begin with beginner friendly online jobs that don't require specialized skills and work our way toward building high income skills, creating a personal brand, and scaling your online income. You are going to learn not just how to make money online, but also how to achieve long term success. Let's dive in. 3. How Online Work Saved Me: We are going to start with a little story. And this is the story of how I started and why I truly believe that making money online is honestly a way out for a lot of people, and it is very possible in case you are doubting Thomas. I was an orphan in university, and I had so much to think about in terms of finances. I had to think about school fee and rent and put food on the table. So I try to find ways to kind of fill this financial gap. So I said, You know what, Tess, go look for a job, a job that would allow me to work and, you know, study. And I don't know how it is outside Kenya, because I grew up in getting a job in Kenya is a bit difficult, especially when you are a student because most jobs require full time workers. Most of the time you'll be denied because they're very strict on experience and studies and all that. You see, I tried looking for jobs. I looked for cleaning jobs in the bank. I looked for jobs in street shops, shops that sell street food. And to my surprise or not, I was denied most of them. I even tried selling clothes. I put all my money together, all the little money I had, and I got myself some stock, and then I tried to sell clothes. I tried this for, like, a week and nobody bought what I was selling, so I realized, this is not it. And then I remember a friend of mine, we were in the same class was doing online work. He was telling me how people are doing writing jobs and they're making money. At that time, writing was very, very popular. And for me, this just sounded like and true stories, stories to pass the time. And then one day I went to the movie shop. So there's this shop where you go and get movies if you don't have WiFi. So you go with your flash disk and you choose a movie and the person at the shop just puts the movie for you, and then you can go back home and watch. And this guy told me because he was also my friend, he said, What else, by the way, one of my customers left his flash disk and wanted me to deliver it to the movies he chose. And he told me, Do you mind, you know, working with me to his place so we can drop off? I said, You know what? Why not? Let's go? Because I was free that time. And then we went to that guy's place and he was in second year then, but I have never seen I had never seen a university student living the life that that guy was living. From how furnished his place was, the furniture he had was very expensive. The way he carried himself, it looked like he had it all figured out. After dropping the hard drive, I remember on our way back, I asked my friend. That guy is a student. What does he do? And then he told me, just does, you know, writing. I said, What? Online writing and is able to live that life. In second year at that age. You know, in second year you're what? 19, 20? You know, they're old. And for that guy to furnish the home the way he had furnished it, he had to be making, you know, a significant amount of money. So I looked for people because obviously I was scared of asking my friend to introduce me to this guy. So I went Mark to my friend who was giving me these stories about people making money, and then I asked him to connect me to someone who can give me writing jobs. I remember he connected me to a guy and that guy gave me a task. It was an academic writing task. And let me tell you, friends, up to this day, I have never understood what I was supposed to do. So I just told the guy, I'm sorry, but I cannot do this task. And that is when I realized that academic writing was not for me. So after a few weeks, obviously, I was reminded of my financial problems. And after that one guy, you know, the stories of how people making money online just kept coming my way like left right and center. And then I said, You know what this? Let me give this thing another chance. So instead of academic writing, because I realized that's a very difficult space for me, I said, I'm going to do research and find maybe a different type of writing. I was new to it, so I didn't know any better. I started researching, Googling, and then I found a platform called Eye Writer, and then I got accepted. I started writing articles. And although most of my articles were rejected, some of them were accepted. There's a learning curve to all that because I was completely new and I spent many nights, sleepless nights, working on articles that ended up being rejected. It was very frustrating. I remember out of ten articles that I wrote, as a beginner, only two were accepted, and each article, I was getting paid $8. So I remember the second article. Actually, the person who I wrote the article for the client was very impressed with my writing. He even tipped me. In that month, I made $20, and I was like, What? I know this is very little for someone living outside Kenya. But for me, as a student, in a Kenyan University, this was a lot of money. This was enough to buy me some food for a few days. And so I said, If I can make $20, maybe I can make 70. Maybe I can make 100. And so I went on and on and on. So my starting point was very bumpy in terms of lack of guidance, the rejections I got, and some skepticism. You know, at that time, people thought when you're working online, you're scamming people or you're doing some, you know, shoddy jobs, I had some sort of doubt. I said, I'm going to try this thing. And when I made that $20, that kind of shifted my perception a bit. But there was a learning curve, and it was a bit difficult. And that is when I kind of started believing that this might actually work. So I said, I'm going to go early in on it because I needed the money and everything else I tried didn't work out. I didn't make any money from everything else I tried. This is the only thing that had made me any money. Albeit small. I didn't know that this was the beginning of a big life for me. That time I was just doing it to have something in my tummy. I was not looking at the big picture, but that step that step I took towards online work opened out I measured of doors of opportunities. Because a few months down the line after starting writing, I got an opportunity with a government project, a sponsored project. The goal was to train youth to work online. So they were training the youth, you know, young people in school and out of school on different online jobs, like writing, like transcription, like web development, data analysis, and all that. And so they were looking for mentors. After someone has been trained, they needed some sort of a mentor to help them understand the space, the dynamics of it. And I remember that same friend who gave me a first task told me, Test there's an opportunity. The government is looking for mentors you've told me you've been writing articles. Maybe you should try becoming a mentor because you've been doing this for a while now and you're making money. You know, you can help other young people, and I applied. And then I got that opportunity. And then my income increased a bit. Now, I had two streams of income, not just writing, but I was also mentoring people, and I was getting money. And that is where I developed the passion for training and mentorship. In fact, all I knew was writing and web development. I was mentoring 15 people. One of my mentes asked me test. I know you mentor us on writing, article writing and web development, but I heard about transcription, and to be honest, I had never I had never heard of transcription. Audio video transcription, never. I didn't tell her that I don't know anything about that. I just told her, I'm going to have to go and do some research and come back to you. One thing about me, I don't like to fail my trainees or my mentes. So I dived into research. I was trying to look into transcription, and I read so much about it, watched videos about it. And that is when it hit me. This is actually something I might also do. So I went back to my MNTs with all my findings, all the information I had found out. And that same week, I applied for a position as an independent transcriptionist, independent contractor in a transcription company. The company is called Verbit. It still exists up to now. I mean, this is not many years ago, but it was my first company and it was kind of new. Obviously, there's a learning curve to that because I didn't know what I was doing, honestly. And just as my experience with writing, most most of my transcripts were rejected, you know, when I first started working with Fabid. But let me tell you, once I got the hang of it, my income increased. And so I had three sources of income, folks. We're talking about writing mentorship, which ended, you know, a few months later. And now transcript loved transcription so much. It changed my life. I can't even tell you. After that project, there was another opportunity to be a consultant, an online work consultant. I applied and then and then got accepted. And I met people, and I've got my first direct transcription clients. I'm telling you, doors opened, and sometimes I can't even explain. What happened. In a span of, like, two years, my whole life changed. From an orphan was struggling to put food on the table, now I had mints. I had more than one stream of income. If you don't believe that you can make a living online, learn for my story, learn from my story. Who I am today has been shaped by my online work by the fact that I entered this space and I gave it a chance. Some of the things that helped me grow to this point from starting as a scared, 19-year-old who could not complete an academic writing project to having my own online business, I kind of allowed myself to learn. I was open to learning. I was open minded. I said, I don't know anything about this, but I've made some money from it, which means it's promising and I can make more. What do I need to do? To make more. So I was open to learning. I did a lot of research. When I got my job as a consultant, I met other people who are doing this, and I tried my best to learn as much as I can from them. So when I failed, when my work got rejected, I didn't just give up. Sometimes I'd sacrifice the only money I had to buy data bundles so I can get access, so I can access the Internet and complete a project, and then it gets rejected. And now I have lost everything, but I never gave up. Obviously, I'd cry in a corner for maybe a day or two, but after that, I'd pick myself up. And go at it again. And there's nothing as beautiful as resilience when it comes to working online, especially if you know nothing about it. And obviously, interacting with people and being part of a project that was dealing with online work. I got so many people to kind of guide me to share their experiences, the lessons they've learned, got access to resources. That indirect support made it a bit easier for. What I'll tell you when you're getting into this space is when you have to be willing to take a chance on yourself. Don't underestimate yourself. Give yourself a chance to prevail, to try to learn. You'll surprise yourself, I'm telling you. Be open to learning. You don't know everything, and there is so much to learn. You also need to be patient and resilient, as I mentioned, because this thing takes time. Obviously, you can make it in a week, a month, how long it takes for you to make it. I don't know. It depends on your hard work, how much effort you're putting in, the opportunities you have access to, and all that, but it's good to be patient. Sometimes things don't work out the way you want them to work out, but that doesn't mean that you failed. So be patient and be resilient. Stick to it and do it and get up when you fail. Surprised by what you can build when you stay patient and resilient. If I did it, you can, too. I was young. I knew very little about this space, but I still did it. So what's stopping you from doing it with all the resources you have access to. Now, the task for this lesson is I'd like you to write down why you want to make money online and what you are willing to do to achieve this. Knowing your why and what you're willing to do will help you stay motivated and focused. Now that you know my story, let's move on to creating your own plan to start making money online from scratch. 4. Why Make Money Online: You ever wondered what your life would look like if you could work from anywhere in the world at any time? Now, in this lesson, I'm going to officially introduce you to the concept of making money online and why it's a valuable pursuit. Now, you see the Internet has made the world a global marketplace, and studies show that majority of people nowadays are interested in one of these three things or two or all of them. One, to get into remote work, get an online job or start an online business. This tells you that making money online is becoming more popular by day. I'm telling you the number of people who are even interested in making money online. When I started back in 2017, have tripled today. And this will continue growing. So if you're taking advantage of this thing, if you're interested in it, this is the time to start. You know, the beauty of working online is that it's not like traditional work. It's accessible to everybody, as long as you have an Internet connection, you can't take part. You can't get a remote, get an online job, or start an online business. You see, there are benefits to making money online, and one of them is flexibility. I asked you. Imagine how your life would be if you could work from anywhere in the world at any time. You see, I moved from Kenya to England and my work didn't stop. And then I recently just came back to Kenya, and my work still continues because my work isn't dependent on my location, and I don't have to wake up at 8:00 A.M. Can wake up at 11:00 A.M. Sometimes I feel like, you know, I don't want to work during the day. I'm going to work at night the whole night. There are days I'm like today, I just want to do some self. I'm going to stay in sleeping, watch a movie, and just take care of myself and my work will not be affected in any way. There's that flexibility to work at your own time, set your own work hours, and work from anywhere. W from a cafe, work from your home, work from a restaurant, work from the park. The second benefits is the opportunities available online. They are so diverse. I was telling someone when you think about online work. Look at the traditional traditional market. You see the way there are so many roles now triple that because the Internet has created more opportunities for everybody. So if you're interested in data entry, you can do that. If you want to be a sales engineer and work remotely, you can do that. If you want to be a consultant, virtual assistant, like, the opportunities are so diverse. The probability of you getting exactly what you're looking for is so high. And then there are niche markets. I mean, if you're not interested in what's already available, you can create your own thing. Have you seen people who've started online businesses that are so unique? Like, you know, I don't want to do what everybody else is doing. I'll teach people how to organize their laundry, and I will create a business online business out of that. So you can create your own thing if you feel like it doesn't exist in the market at that. And the third benefit, of course, is scalability. I mean, the potential to make as much money as you can make in this world is so high. You can scale your income over time. You know, traditional work, traditional employment, you know, you can be earning the same amount of money for years, but online work allows you to scale your income. This month you might make $500. Next month, it might be $3,000. Three years, you might be making three times that because online work is easy to scale. And there's room for growth, you know, both professionally and personally. Let me tell you the amount of things, the amount of knowledge I have now compared to what I knew when I first started. I can't even start to explain how much I have grown as a person. You see, being self employed and working for yourself, there's so many things you need to do. There's so much growth needed in terms of discipline, resilience, patience, communication because you're required to do a lot to keep yourself grounded, to grow yourself, to know when it's time to leave something and start something to know when it's time to drop a client, to know how to communicate to a client, how to retain them, how to get them, come on board. So you get to grow so much professionally and personally become more disciplined. I feel like you also become more ambitious. So I have learned so much in the seven years that I have been doing this thing, and I thank God that I came into this space because I'm looking back to the jobs that I go, the traditional jobs. There's only one workplace that had opportunities for growth, not as much as online work gives me, but only one place that could come even close. You're probably wondering, Tis, is this for me? This is for everybody. Online work is for beginners without experience. In fact, you don't even have to be a graduate to take advantage of this. You might have dropped out of school in high school. It is so because, you know, you can learn, you learn as you go. You don't need to have learned and gained experience for you to take advantage of this. You can get into the space, and then you grow with it. That is the beauty of it. When I started transcription, I didn't know nothing about it, but I learned. And now I call myself an expert transcriptionist. When I started digital marketing, I didn't know anything about it and look at me this is for side hustlers. For people who are not looking to go into this full time, they just want to, you know, do it on the side. They have other commitments. Maybe you have a full time job, a nine to five, you don't want to leave that you're just looking for something to do on the side. This is for you. This is also for those people who want to change careers. Maybe they are looking to pivot. You want to try out a different field without committing fully to it. Online work is for you because it gives you sort of that flexibility. It's something you can do at your own time and you can't stop at any time. So if you are a beginner, no experience, no education qualification, I mean, obviously, you need to know how to operate a computer and all that. Side hustlers, people looking to get some extra income on the side, people looking to pivot change careers, this is for you and everybody else I haven't mentioned. Now, there's something I haven't talked about, and that is the financial potential. You know, unlike traditional work, that is kind of constraint in the online space, you can diversify your income. You don't just have to do one thing. You can be a creator, a consultant. You can sell stuff. You can be so many things. So you'll have many streams of income, active and passive streams of income. And that is why it is so easy to make as much money as you earn from online work compared to traditional a friend of mine who started just as a writer, and today he has his own agency. He used to write for people. He'd get gigs on Facebook and he'd get paid, just a few dollars here and there. But today, he has his own agency. He has his own blog. He trains people in writing. He has direct clients. He has writers who work for him. He's invited as a guest speaker at different events. So you see, he has diversified his income so that when maybe one thing is not bringing in money, there's something else that is bringing in when all these trims bring in money, imagine the kind of life he's living. One of the main benefits of online work for me is freedom. Financial freedom for one. Can you imagine if you can live a life where money is not a problem, really? Money is not coming the way of your decisions. And to this lifestyle freedom, you get to wake up when you want to live where you want to live. Like, imagine the ability to spend more time with your family, to travel the world while still working. If you ask me Tess, why are you so passionate about online work? This is why freedom or even freedom to learn, freedom to grow at your own pace, at your own time, to learn whatever you want to learn, it's priceless, I'm telling you. What I'm trying to say is making money online can completely change someone's life. It can change your life if you want it to if you allow it to. Now, for this lessons task, I'd like you to revisit the previous lesson. Look at the reasons you wrote down why you want to make money online. And then think about the things we've talked about in this lesson and then revise your reasons to make money online or add on to them. Add on to the reasons why making money online is important to you. Now, in the coming lessons, I will guide you through exactly how to start your journey, no matter where you are right now. 5. Mindset for Success: Let's talk about mindset for success. Now, you see the mental attitude you have while going into this and while doing it contributes greatly to your success. Your mindset kind of influences your behavior. Your behavior influences your actions, and your actions influence your output, and your output influence your success. You mindset can help you navigate obstacles because they are there and you need to be strong enough and disciplined enough mentally to navigate them and to overcome the challenges that you will face. You see, for you to understand why mindset is important, I have to tell you that making money online is not a get rich quick scheme. That is why we talked about patience and resilience. I tell people, when thinking about online work, just imagine it's traditional work, but now you're doing it online. The dynamics might be different, but the rules are the same. For you to succeed in traditional work, for instance, you need to be disciplined. And discipline is part of mindset when it comes to making money online. Now that you know it's not a get rich quick scheme, and you know that you need discipline. Let's talk about growth mindset and fixed mindset. Now, having a growth mindset means you believe that abilities can be developed, skills can be learned, knowledge can be gained. You believe that challenges are here to instruct you to guide you, that failure is part and parcel of success. So when you have a growth mindset, you know that if you put in effort in something, if you learn a bit more, educate yourself a bit more. Be able to have different outcomes from what you had when you knew little about something. Now, fixed mindset, on the other hand, is where you think everything is static. You're like, I will not go into this space because I know nothing about it and you don't believe you can learn. You want to pivot, you want to change careers. You want to try something else, but you're held back by your fixed mindset because you how will I learn that? I don't know anything about that. I don't know how to navigate my way around a computer. That's a fixed mindset. The beauty of a growth mindset is that it's easy to embrace challenges and overcome them. When you have a fixed mindset, you're more likely to avoid challenges. I'd really love to make money online, but I don't know how to use computers, so I'll just leave that and continue with my nine to five or I'll just, you know, I won't try because after all, I am not good at tech or I am not good at this thing. So when you have a fixed mindset, you just don't try things. You avoid them completely because you don't think you can learn, you can gain skills and abilities and become good at something that you were once not good at. And that is the mindset you need to drop if you want to succeed in making money online. A growth mindset will go a long way in helping you succeed in this space. It will also help you overcome challenges, especially some of the common challenges that beginners face, Imposter syndrome. Have you ever felt like you are a pretender? You know nothing. Imposter syndrome is this feeling of being unqualified to do something even when you are competent in that thing. There are times I feel like, Oh, my God, am I really good at this thing? I really help my client? The way I'm telling them, I will help them? That is imposter syndrome. When I start thinking about that, my mindset helps me get over that quickly. So a growth mindset helps you deal with things like this because if there's something that's making you feel like an imposter, you tell yourself, but I can learn. Or if you already know something, you feeling like an imposter, you know, when you have a growth mindset, you're able to sit down and say, no, this is what I'm good at. Here is the evidence. So growth mindset kind of helps you overcome the imposter syndrome that you feel when you are a beginner and you will feel it. Challenge that a lot of beginners face that a growth mindset will help you overcome is fear of failure. You're thinking, people are making money here or people are doing this, but can I do it? Maybe I will fail. I'm not good at it. Maybe even if I try to learn, I just won't be as good as I want to be. That is fear of failure. You're afraid that you will fail. With a growth mindset, you view failure as learning opportunity. When you start thinking, What if I fail, you tell yourself, I will learn through it because every failure is a lesson. There's also good old procrastination. You're delaying task unnecessarily, putting things off. And that is very common, very normal. I also procrastinate sometimes, but I try not to as much as possible. The way I overcome procrastination is I break tasks into smaller steps, and then I set deadlines. If I have broken a huge task into five steps, I give each step a deadline. When should I have completed this thing? So that is how you avoid procrastination, making sure that you have a deadline so you won't procrastinate. We talked about resilience, and this is part of success mindset when it comes to making money online. So for you to build resilience, there are three things you can do. One, accept setbacks, accept challenges as part of the process. Two, you really need to celebrate small wins. Like, if you achieve something, let's say you broke a huge task into small steps and maybe you had ten steps and you've completed five, celebrate that. Or maybe you just completed one. Celebrate that, pour yourself a glass of wine and say, Cheers to me, done and dusted. Celebrate small wins to keep yourself motivated. And through this persistence, persist. Don't give up, persist. The more you try something, the more you're likely to succeed. In fact, if you have evidence of some of the things that you persisted in and you eventually succeeded in, use that as your foundation. So resilience is built through persistence, through accepting failure and challenges, and through celebrating small ones. Some of the practical tips that I can give you to build a success mindset is to set smart goals. I know you've heard this so many times. Set smart goals, specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, time bound. Tip number two is to be open to learning. I have started this class by saying that, and I will continue seeing that. Push yourself to gain knowledge, to gain skills, continue developing yourself both personally and professionally. And then be positive, cultivate positivity. Surround yourself with positivity. Find yourself people who are doing this and they are positive about it. Read books that kind of keep you motivated, watch movies, watch videos that keep you motivated. Surround yourself with positivity, not negativity, not people who are saying this doesn't work. This is a scam, blah, blah, blah. Those once they kill your morale, make sure that your environment is as positive as possible to cultivate that success mindset. Now, practical tip number four is to visualize, just imagine yourself in that moment of success. If your goal is to make $10,000 a month, imagine yourself looking at your bank balance, and it reads $10,000. See yourself where you want to be, and that helps you kind of stay motivated. I like to do this a lot. Sometimes when I'm feeling down or when I feel demotivated, I just like to see myself at the end of the road. Obviously, there's no end to learning and all that, but at my goal, like, I start seeing myself in that moment where I have hit or achieved all my goals. And that just keeps me going. Like it reminds me of what I am working for and what my life will be if I complete that task that's going to get me there. If I complete the project, that's going to get our self care is part of a success mindset. Taking care of yourself in this journey is going to really, really contribute to your success. So be mindful of your physical well being, eat well, get enough sleep. You know, the thing about being self employed and working for yourself and working online is your work is with you. So you will constantly fight the urge to continue working. Sometimes I say I quit my nine to five to work 16 hours a day because sometimes that is what it feels like. Your work hours increase, they double. So kind of making sure you have a routine, you're getting enough sleep. That's important. Sleeping enough, eating well, and exercising if you're into it will really help you in terms of your physical well being. For your mental well being, just make sure you're taking breaks, very, very important. Don't just work constantly because you burnout and there's nothing as bad as burnout. I ended up wasting a whole week the other day because this week I worked constantly without taking a break, and I was so burnt out. The next week, I couldn't get up from the bed. I wanted to do was to lay down and watch a movie. I was very demotivated. So take breaks as many as you can, practice mindfulness, you know, journal, do things that kind of ease your mind. Self care is very important when it comes to making money online because this is a journey that doesn't really end if you hit one goal, maybe your goal was to make $5,000, you'd want more. So you don't want to be in a constant state of working because that will ruin you in terms of your health, and that will work against your success mindset because you start thinking, This is too hard. I'm working too much. I prefer nine to five because at least there was a limit to how much I was working. So the bottom line of this lesson is that the right mindset is very crucial for success. I'd like you to reflect on your mindset. Down your weaknesses and strengths in relation to your mindset for online work. Talk about things like time management, adaptability, talk about persistence. Now, in the next lesson, we will explore some of the ways you can start making money online as a beginner. I'll see you there. 6. Easy Online Jobs You Can Start Today: Ready to dive into the actual opportunities waiting for you. In this lesson, I'm going to introduce you to relatively easy jobs that are accessible to beginners and form a good entry point for, you know, someone who's starting their make money online journey. One of the online jobs is transcription, which is very close to my heart. I'm very passionate about transcription because it changed my life. I have a transcription business which I have built over the years. Now, transcription is basically converting audio or video files into text files. Do a lot of listening. It's listening and typing. You need to have good listening skills and be good at typing. At least 40 words per minute is a good place to start. Transcription can get complicated sometimes because there are also rules to follow instructions to follow and transcribing depending on the client you're working for or the company you're working for. Your grammar also needs to be good and you also need to be good at doing a bit of research, finding out spelling of names and all that. Now, some of the platforms where you can get transcription jobs for beginners is good transcript, transcribe bit. There is Rev, that's very popular. I mean, there are so many transcription companies. Some accept beginners, others don't. There's daily transcription. So for you to find, like, the company that works for you, I usually advise beginners to register on as many as possible. If you're completely new and you've not done your due diligence, you might be rejected. Your first application might be rejected. Registering on platforms and getting the feel of it and doing the transcription tests kind of introduces you into the transcription world in a very nice way. I think it's the best way to get started in this field. So there are more transcription companies more than what I have mentioned. Here, all you have to do is do research. Now, as a beginner transcriptionist, you won't be able to make much, so don't have, high expectations. I usually say that when you're starting, it's best to have learning as your priority. You're trying to understand the space, the field, you're learning what transcription is, how to do it, what do employers look for? What's a good transcript. And now, once you've practiced a bit more, I usually like to use these platforms as an opportunity to practice as you build expertise and get ready to now get high paying roles. Online job that's easy to do and very accessible for beginners is data entry. Data entry is simply kind of inputting data into systems and spreadsheets. This is one of the most in demand and easiest online job that anybody can do. So you can imagine a lot of people are interested in data entry, which means you won't make big bucks from data entry because the jobs are easy and everybody's looking for them. So with this jobs don't pay much because they know there are so many people looking for the jobs. Now to get access to beginner data entry jobs, register on platforms like Amazon Mechanical tack, click Worker, one Former, A W. Even fiber, you can get data entry jobs, depends on how good your profile is and where you're looking. There are more platforms like apen where you can get data entry jobs. So be sure to do your research. Don't just settle on what I have mentioned. Here, the third online job is freelance writing, which is what I started with. Now, there are different types of writing this academic writing, which is what I started with, and honestly, it proved to be difficult for me, so I discarded that and then I went into article writing. There's also research writing. I usually advise beginners to try with different kinds of writing to kind of figure out what you're really good at. So you can settle for one or two. If you can do multiple types of writing, like copywriting, article writing, research writing, good for you because you have more opportunities to make money. Now, some of the platforms you can look into in order to get writing jobs is fiber, there's people per hour, there's work. The text broker, this eye writer, where I start constant content where you can actually even sell articles you've written before or you write articles and then sell on constant content. So there are many, many writing platforms. All you have to do is do your research. I will say this for all the jobs I will mention because don't think the platforms I mentioned are the only ones available. The fourth easy online job that you can do that will form a good entry point for you as a beginner is virtual assistant. Being a virtual assistant is simply being somebody's personal assistant. Only difference is you'll be doing this virtually from wherever you live in the world. Now, this is simply assisting a business or an individual with admin tasks. It can be email management, calendar management, writing. The tasks are so many. What really matters is what do you want to do? What kind of help do you want to offer businesses and individuals? And virtual assistance is an in demand kind of online job. And in fact, you can even create a business out of it. You don't have to just do it beginner, you can decide to start as a beginner and grow professionally, get your own clients, and, you know, increase your income. As a beginner, you won't make a lot of money really because you're just getting started. There's so much you don't know, but the more you learn, the more you grow, the more you get access to many high earning opportunities. Some of the platforms to get virtual assistant jobs is Bile Solutions. There's Zito, there's 247 Virtual Assistant, and many more. All you have to do is perform a simple Google search, say Virtual assistant jobs for beginners and you'll get many companies where you can, you know, apply and start working as a virtual assistant. There are also online surveys and microtasks that honestly don't pay as much as the other jobs I have mentioned, but you can also try them out. These are just tasks here and there, downloading up, testing stuff here and there that you can get started with and, you know, have a feel of how working online feels like or experience it for the first time. One I mentioned in this lesson is user testing jobs where you test apps and websites, it's good for beginners and you get paid per test per task, you can get you can earn $10 per task, $20, $30. It all depends on the platform you are working for. You can find user testing jobs on platforms usertesting.com, and many more, make sure to do your research. Order to get started with these online jobs, number one is to do your research and identify a company that you want to start with or companies. Let's say you've decided you're going to go with Virtual assistance and from your research, you think 247 Virtual assistance is a good place to start. The next thing you do is to register on the platform. Same applies to maybe writing and transcription. Maybe you want to start with Upwork. The next thing you do is to create an account on APWTreate a profile, register on your company of choice, your platform of choice, your market place of choice, optimize your profile. I know you are a beginner, but it's important to try and build a profile that would attract a client, especially if you are registering on platforms like fiber and Upwork. If you are registering on companies like Rev and Transcribe M, they will tell you what you need to do to get in. They will maybe require you to pass a transcription test or a writing test. So there are freelance platforms or freelance marketplaces like Upwork and fiber in P per hour, where all you have to do is create an account, optimize your profile, and then start applying for jobs. Then there are job specific platforms like for transcription. The Rev, for writing this eye writer, they also have their own requirements. They will need to pass a test before they accept you and stuff like that. So be ready. Not all platforms are the same, but all the same, you will need to create a profile or create an account, go through the application process, and to give yourself an edge, it's good to put together a portfolio. Now, if you're looking to start with transcription, go online, look for short audio, short videos, and transcribe them, and then put those in your portfolio. If you want to start with writing, do the same, write an article on something and start on your portfolio. So it's good to just have some projects that you've done whether for yourself, for a friend or for a client. This will give you a boost when looking for jobs as a beginner. When getting started, it's important to manage expectations, especially when it comes to income. Like I said, my advice to beginners is your priority when you're starting should be to gain knowledge, to understand how does this thing work? What do I need to be better? What do I need to produce better transcripts, better write ups, better articles, you know, to become a better bachor assistant. So it's good to manage your income expectations. Don't expect to just get started today and tomorrow you've made $1,000. So be realistic about your initial earnings and know that when it comes to these online jobs, the more you work, the more you earn. So I remember if you wanted to make a lot of money from VABIt for example, when I was starting on it, I had to do more work. I had to transcribe more files. So the more you work, the more you earn. Now, as you get started, you will need to work on your communication skills because this will go a long way in helping you get clients. You need to work on your time management because like I said, the more transcription files I did, the more I earn. So I wanted to do a transcription file as fast as I can, so I can be able to do more and earn more. So time management is important. Don't write one article for a whole week. That means you'll only get paid for that one article. But if you can manage your time well and work on an article a day, you make more and someone who's working on one at collar week. So you see managing your time and being able to work more and deliver quality work in their located time or their allotted time is very important because their timelines when it comes to these jobs like transcription, if you're working on a platform, let's say you're working on Verbit, you'll have some sort of a deadline. They'll give you like 3 hours to complete a file, a three minute file or five minute file. So you need to be able to complete your task within their located time. You don't want to kind of disappoint the person who's giving you the job, whether it's the platform or a direct client because that works against you get bad reviews. Which work against you. Obviously, another skill to develop is quality improvement. I usually say quality is what matters when working online. The more quality work we produce, the more clients and platforms trust you, the better your reviews, the more money you earn. So make sure you are providing quality every time with every task you complete. If you prioritize money and you do a shody job, you will not make that money, but if you prioritize quality, there's a probability you always get paid for the work you do. Focus on improving quality, managing your time, and improving your communication skills. Now, tips for you that will help you make more as a beginner one, try different online jobs. You don't have to just do writing or virtual assistants. You can be working on a writing job here, and here you've applied for a transcription job. The more jobs you do, the more you're able to earn and when you try different online jobs, you're able to know what am I good at? What should I put more effort in? Don't just rule out something without trying it. For me, I tried so many jobs, data analysis, web development, writing, even academic writing, and I figure out it's not for me. I realized web development takes so much time. I'm a web developer professionally. It's a skill I have, but I was like, I can't do this. So you have to identify what works for you. And for you to do this, you need to try different online jobs and make sure kind of using your transferable skills. Well, now transferable skills are the skills you gained in roles that were not related to what you want to do. Like, maybe you are a secretary. So try to use the typing skills you got from your secretarial job to kind of give you an edge when applying for a transcription job. So make use of transferable skills. Now, just to summarize this whole thing, you don't need special skills to start. There are online jobs that you can get started with as a beginner, and you can learn as you go. So don't shy away from starting from zero. I'd like you to identify an online job or online jobs that stand out for you. The one that you think you're going to start with and write down why you are drawn to this online job or these online jobs. So identify an online job or online jobs that stand out to you and why they stand out to you. In the next lesson, we are going to cover how to set realistic income goals. I'll see you there. 7. Setting Realistic Income Goals: Setting clear income goals is like setting a destination on your GPS. In this lesson, we are going to cover how to set short term and long term income goals because goals kind of provide direction. When I said, it's like setting a destination on your GPS, you need to know where you're going. And for you to map out a route or for Google Maps to map out a route for you, you need to know exactly where you're going. It kind of keeps you motivated to keep going. You know, when you've started working and you are three quarter or halfway done, you're like, Let me keep going. I am almost done. Being able to see that progress keeps you motivated. Number three, it's easy to measure your progress. Like, how far have I come? My goal is $3,000 a month. Where am I right now? I am at $500 a month. Okay, so you're able to measure your progress. That is the importance of setting clear income goals. There are two types of goals. One is short term goals. This is where let's say you say, I want to make $200 in my first month. Short term. Now, there are also long term goals. You see, within my first year working online, I want to build up to $2,000 a month. For this one, it's one month. You want to achieve $200 in your first month. So if your first month is September, then by the end of September, you need to have achieved to $200. The long term goal here, you've given yourself a whole year to build up to $2,000 a month. So you might start with $200 to 500 to 700 until you get to $2,000. Setting realistic goals is very important. I'd advise you to first start small. Don't set overwhelmingly big goals because they will demotivate you. Because if you're getting started and you say, in my first month, I want to make $5,000. And then you make $100, how are you gonna feel? Plus, it's not realistic to make $5,000 in your first month. Let's say you've started with jobs like transcription jobs or writing. You might. I'm not saying it's impossible, but for most people, it's not realistic. So it's important not overwhelm yourself with setting an extremely outrageous goal. When I first started, I made $20 in the month that I actually got paid $20. And then I said, If I can make 20, maybe I can make 70. So let me aim for 70 in the next month. Now I've made 70. Let me aim for 100 in the next. Until I build up my income to $2,000 $2,500 a month, I started small and then increased over time. Now, as you gain experience, you'll be able to adjust your goals. So start small and then build over time, adjust. Don't be afraid to adjust. You can also set platform specific goals. Like I said, you can try different online jobs. Let's say you want to be making $50 from Rev in a week. And then from upwork you want to make $200 in a week. From Transcribe me, you want to make $500 in a month. Platform specific goals will help you build up to your main goal. So first, you need to research the income potential for each platform. How much do transcribers on Rev make? How much do writers on text broker make? How much in then you set your realistic goals within the margins that you find out. So having these small goals, split goals, like platform specific, it's very easy to kind of track them to know which platform makes me more money. Which platform do I need to put more effort? Which platform makes me zero money, and I'm spending so much time on it? Which platform do I drop? Because it's probably wasting your time. Where do you double your effort? So platform specific goals kind of just helps you attain your main goal and helps you track your goals better. It's important for you to track your progress. Have a spreadsheet where you put in, how much you've earned from which platform, how much you earned every month? Has it increased gone down? Use spreadsheets, use different apps, even just track on your journal, make sure you know where you are at and when. At the end of every month, assess your income and see, last month I made this, this month I made this. What did I do differently? Did I do more files? I get high paying jobs, it's very easy to keep track of your progress if you do regular reviews, assess your progress periodically regularly so you can track your performance and your progress better and be able to reach or to hit your targets faster. Now, the take lesson for you, I hope is starting is the most important thing to do. I mean, do you know the main reason most people are not making money online is because they never started. So starting is the most important thing. Building momentum helps you grow day by day, day by day. Setting realistic income goals helps one manage disappointment. Now let's add a piece to your plan, shall we. For this lesson, your task is to set a clear income goal for your first month. How much do you want to earn from online work in your first month? Next to that or below that, please indicate the platform you want to start with. Is it Rev? Is it up work? Is it five? Is it transcribe? Is it per hour? Is it another platform you found out? Please note this down. How much you want to earn in your first month and the platform? What platforms you want to start with. In the next lesson, we look at the basic tools you will need to get started. 8. Tools and Equipment You Need to Start: Now let's ensure you have everything you need to start making money online. In this lesson, we are going to talk about some of the tools you will need to get started. Now, there are some basic equipment that you will need. Number one, a laptop. A laptop is very important when working online. I mean, there are jobs you can do from your smartphone, but a laptop is going to make your work very easy. So make sure you have access to a laptop, a desktop computer, or a smartphone, if, to be honest, that is all you have. When it comes to laptops, don't think high end. You know, a laptop that works is okay. When it comes to working online, writing an article or doing transcription, you know, a laptop that has the basic requirements works just fine. So don't break the bank trying to get the most expensive laptop. To Internet access, very important. Remember, everything you're doing is on the Internet. To access the Internet, you need Internet access. Do you have Wi Fi? Are you able to afford data bundles? What do you have access to? Do you have a place you can go where there's Wi Fi? So stable and relatively fast Internet is very important. Number three, might need a pair of headphones or headsets. Let's say you are interested in transcription. That is what you want to get started with. You will most definitely need headphones, headsets or earphones. The most basic earphones or headsets will do. What matters is, can you hear clearly what people are saying? That's it. So you don't have to break the bank again to get yourself the most expensive headphones. Just go for, you know, the ones that work properly for you. Those are some of the basic tools you need to get started with online work. There are other tools you need like software. You need Google Docs or Microsoft Word. As long as you have access to the software that kind of make you day to day easy that enable you to perform your functions day to day, you go to go. It doesn't matter which brand or company you use. Need Canva to design a few things here and there if you are a virtual assistant, or if your job, your online job is creative where you need to make posters and all that. Canva will come in handy and there's a free version for this, so you don't have to worry about paying for it. Now, for meetings and calls, you might need Skype, Zoom, or Google Mid. According to what you want to do, do you think you will need this? If yes, then make sure you have a way to get access to them? You might grab yourself a free version of the tools or use someone else's. Now, the also optional tools. One optional tool I will suggest for you is a hard drive to store your files. You don't want to lose access to your files to your clients files, your audios, your videos, have a hard drive, an external one where you can store your files just for safekeeping. And just so other people don't access your confidential files because some of these jobs, you have to sign a confidentiality agreement. So you want to actually maintain confidentiality in your hard drive will come in handy. Now, this is my hard drive. I go with it everywhere. It's like a baby. To me, I never leave it, and all my files are in this hard drive. You can also grab yourself some productivity tools that are free, like a sana, Trello that will kind of just help you track productivity and all that. These are optional if you feel like you need them, but you can also track progress and productivity on your channel if you don't have these tools already, you will need to get access to them or purchase them. If you're looking for budget friendly tools, you want to go for refurbished laptops. If it's a laptop, you don't have second hand headphones as long as they work, try not to break the bank. Just go for budget friendly stuff, refurbished, second hand. For software, use the free versions. Most of the software, they have free versions. You don't have to pay for a pro version if the free version works fine. Now, you also need a workspace, a place to work from nothing as bad as not having a comfortable, quiet place to transcribe files from or to write from. You don't want to be doing this work in the living room where everybody is seated and making stories because that is very destructive. So get yourself a comfortable setup. Get a desk and put it in your bedroom if that is the only space you have access to. Get a comfortable chair because you don't want to develop back issues. So get yourself as a comfortable chair. It doesn't have to be expensive. Get a second hand if you must. And make sure you are as comfortable as possible. Having a separate place to work also kind of gives you motivation. It gives you that feel like, you know, this is important. If I head to work from my bed, nothing would ever get done. So when I go into a new place, even if I'm living in that space temporarily, I make sure I have a desk and a chair if I don't. That is the first thing I buy. This is important. It kind of differentiates your living space and your workspace and kind of creates that separation. Dedicated workspace also helps you avoid distractions. You want to be in a space where people are not coming and going. People are not talking around you. They're not distracting you from completing your tasks and all that. My advice, start with what you have. Don't try to get the most expensive stuff. If you have the basic start with that. If you can borrow, do that. You want to make sure you beginning is simple and it's not costing you more than you have. Start with what you have and keep it simple. Then when you start making money, you will upgrade with time. With time, you'll have maybe the most expensive tools, the most expensive laptop, but as you're beginning, honestly, you don't need them. You don't need fancy equipment to get started. What you have is enough. The most important thing is to start. You can build everything else over like you to take inventory of the tools and equipment that you have access to. Do you have access to a laptop, headphones, Internet access? Word, please make sure you note everything you have down. Either you have it or you can get access to it easily. Note it down. That's the task for this lesson. Now, in the next lesson, we will talk about high income skills that you can learn and earn more 9. High-Income Skills to Earn More: Boost your income, investing in skill development is essential. So in this lesson, I'm going to introduce you some of the high income skills that you can learn to kind of boost your income. Online jobs are great, but some of them will not make you as much money as you'd like. So if you need to actually be financially free and to be able to cater for all your needs, then you will need to learn a high income skill or high income skills. High income skills are important because they have a high earning potential. Number two, high income skills tend to be in demand and skills that are in demand tend to pay more. Now, remember when I said that skills like data entry are very much in demand. So you find that the demand for them is higher than the supply. Now, you find that it's the opposite for high income skills. Market demand for high income skills is high in that there are more jobs than there are skilled professionals able to fill that gap, provide the services needed in the quality that is needed, and that is why they tend to pay more. High income skills also tend to kind of open doors of opportunities, opportunities for growth, business opportunities. If you're looking to scale and make more money and kind of build a business, then high income skills are the way to go. Now, the first high income skill I'm going to highlight in this lesson is digital marketing. In digital marketing, we have search engine optimization. We have social media marketing, we have email marketing. So there are divers roles and diverse skill sets when it comes to digital marketing. Digital marketing is valuable because brands and businesses always want to put their products and services in front of their customers online. Most people are online nowadays, and every brand wants to make sure that what they are offering, what they are selling is getting or reaching the audience that they are targeting, and that is where digital marketing comes in. So if you are specialized in search engine optimization, for instance, you'll be able to help brands kind of reach their target audience. There's also paid ads where brands pay you to run ads for them to set ads for them. And the demand for digital marketing grows day by day and there are so many opportunities in digital marketing. This is one of the best high income skills to learn. The second high income skill that you can give a chance is copywriting. Now, copywriting is writing persuasive materials for marketing purposes. You see, when you're writing an email, it needs to be persuasive. Copywriter comes in to make sure that your email copy is persuasive, that it's convincing enough. You're convincing someone to take an action to buy something, to register some, blah, blah, blah. Copywriting is writing copies that sell, whether you're writing emails, captions, whatever you're writing, you want when a brand wants a customer to read that and to be convinced to take action. That is where copywriting comes in, like digital marketing, it's in demand has high earning potential, so it's a good skill to invest be helping brands and businesses drive sales and customer engagement. These aspects are very, very important to every brand and every business online. The third high income skill you might want to learn is graphic design. If you are a creative person who's interested in designing stuff for people, then graphic design is a beautiful path for you to take. Now, you see visual content is very crucial for marketing and branding. As a creator, there's nothing as important as a good thumbnail. A good graphic designer will create a beautiful thumbnail. Or ahoster. So graphic designers design different materials that businesses, individuals and brands use for their marketing and branding. And the more the Internet grows, the more online work becomes in demand. The more people start online businesses, the more the demand for graphic designers increases. As a graphic designer, you'll be using tools like Photoshop, AdobPhotoshop, Canva, Illustrator to name but a few. Now, high income skill number four is web development. Everybody knows this is an in demand skill and it pays really well. Brands, businesses, individuals want to position themselves in the market online, and our website is usually the best way to do that. That is where our web developer comes in and there are so many brands, so many businesses, so many individuals looking for this. Although AI is coming in into this, human beings are still needed to design functional website. There are brands and businesses and individuals who don't want anything to do with AI, they'd like somebody to create their website from scratch. Don't shy away from learning web development just because AI is coming in, humans will always be needed. And in web development, you'll be using languages like HTML, CSS, Java. These are things you need to learn in order to become a web developer and take advantage of the opportunities that exist in this space. Data analysis is another high income skill that if you can you must learn to earn more money. As a statistician by profession, I can tell you for sure that there are so many opportunities in data online. There's so much data that needs to be analyzed. In marketing, digital marketers, there are those who specialize in analysis. They need to analyze data that comes from their marketing efforts. Who are trying to grow their social media accounts. They need to understand the data, who is coming to their profile, who is taking action. Why did they unsubscribe? Hook Liton, What link? Email marketing. There is data there to be looked at. There's so much data that needs to be analyzed, to be studied, to be understood to be communicated. And that is where a data analyst comes in. And this is a growing field. And just like digital marketing and as I have mentioned, it's in demand. Why? Because businesses, individuals and brands, they need to make data driven decisions. They need to understand their market and what they're selling and how it's selling, and that is where you come in. As a data analyst, you'll be using tools like Excel to analyze data. Google Analytics, CQuL SPSS. There are so many tools for data analysis. Just make sure that you're learning the ones that are very popular and the ones that most employers or most clients for. Skillshare has over 1,000 classes on different fields and different topics. So take advantage of Skillshare to gain as many skills as possible to learn these high income skills. Now, I know it feels like sometimes you have to learn something at once, but you don't have to. When it comes to making money online and growing yourself professionally and personally, you start small and then you build yourself piece by piece. And that is what will help you kind of gain skills, feeling like you're overwhelmed by all the things you have to do. Like, you have to take a class, you have to learn data analysis in one month. You don't have to first thing you do is to choose a skill. What do you want to learn? Is it digital marketing data analysis? Once you've identified a skill, set learning goals. You say, I'll be taking one class per month. That's enough. So allocate a day in a week to learn or allocate a week to be learning, to be working towards investing in your skills. So you don't have to do it all at once. You can do it step by step. And then as you learn, apply what you learn, implement what you've learned in your freelancing journey. If you've learned that analysis somewhere, implement it in your work. If you've learned digital marketing, add it to your portfolio, do something and put it in your portfolio, optimize your LinkedIn profile. Just make sure your case is what you're learning. So implement what you're learning in your day to day in your work so that it doesn't feel overwhelming and now you're done and you don't know where does this go? How do I just implement it step by step. My advice would be if you're learning something new, then try and work on a small project regarding what you're learning. Let's say you're learning digital marketing and you learn a topic on analysis, and that is what impressed you and you want to become a marketing analyst, then work on a little marketing analysis project. Get something online, work on it, put it in your portfolio, and practicing these things helps you build expertise faster. Now, I know you're going to face some challenges as you build your skills, as you gain skills as you learn and develop yourself and to make money, especially when it comes to these high income skills because they are in demand for a reason. One of the challenges you're going to encounter is time management or you're feeling like you don't have enough time to do all these things to work and learn. You goals, your learning goals and your income goals are going to come in handy here. You need to know or you need to try your best. Balance your learning and your earning. You don't want your learning to overwhelm your earning because if you're not earning, you won't even be motivated or you won't even be focused enough to learn. So make sure you are prioritizing what you need to prioritize at a time and balance the activities so that you don't get overwhelmed and decide to stop everything. You can also just network, join communities to stay motivated. You know, join learning communities maybe for digital marketing or data analysis, interact with other people, talk about your challenges, and this will keep you. Stay motivated in learning. Maybe you'll be study groups where you set aside 1 hour or so every day to study. This will help you keep going and stay motivated. Now, make sure as you're learning, you are also building your portfolio. Like I said, it's good to do small projects. You can also use the practice exercises and projects you learn in class to kind of build your portfolio. Like when you take Atlass there's a project. You can put the project once you've completed it on your portfolio so that you don't have to do other separate projects. You can use what you're learning to kind of or you can use the practice exercises to build a portfolio. So that's a good tip to kind of save yourself time. Now, remember that the certificates you get can be very important in kind of boosting your credibility. So ensure you showcase these certificates on your LinkedIn profile. Make sure you highlight them on your resume, on your social media platforms if you can Because sometimes they give you an advantage. They give you an edge instances where clients trust people who've taken the time to learn something and can show that I learned this, I completed it. That's why I'm saying that I'm good at it, especially if you are entry level. Having a certificate show that you actually took time to study will work in your favor. Make sure you showcase this wherever you can. Now, the takeaway for this lesson is, I believe that the more learn, the more you earn, learning leads to earning. So learning is an important aspect of earning. Here is a task for you. Identify a high income skill that you'd like to learn and make sure you highlight why, write down what do I want to learn? Or this is what I want to learn, and this is why I am drawn to this. Or this is why I want to learn this high income skill. It can't be digital marketing, copywriting, or any other skill I have mentioned in this lesson or something else. As long as it's a high income skill, just write it down and why. Now, next, you're going to learn how to build your online presence and why that is important. Stay tuned. 10. Building a Strong Online Presence: Your online presence is your digital storefront. Let's make it inviting, shall we? Now, the goal for this lesson is to help you create and enhance your online profiles and build a personal brand. Now, you're probably wondering test, why does my online presence matter? It does one because a good online presence shows a client that you are professional. You see some clients or companies that you are looking to work with or to work for, some of them judge you by your online presence. How is your social profile? How is your social media profile? How is your Instagram? From there, they will conclude, is this person a professional or not. Judge professionalism from your online presence. Number two, how you've optimized and created and position yourself in the online space can help build credibility. People can trust you just by going through your social media profiles and your website. They will go to your Instagram, you LinkedIn. Especially, and how you've set it up, the words you've used, the picture, the projects you've highlighted your certificates, help build trust with clients. The most important reason for me, though, the other two are very important. But the priority for me when it comes to creating and enhancing my online presence, I usually want to be found. I want to be visible. You see, when you are working online, you want to be able to find you online. So having well optimized and well curated online profiles in just create that visibility for you. Clients are able to find you. People want to work with you are able to find you. They know where to find. Looking for professional data analyst or freelance digital marketing analyst, they find you because you've put yourself out there. That's the importance of having an online presence that works for you. Now, the first step to building a strong online presence is to create a well optimized, strong profile on job platforms, especially because that is the profile people see when they want to work with you. Let's say you are on Upwork. You profile can either get a client in the door or they will swipe and look for somebody else. Want to make sure you're using a professional photo so people can see that you are actually a professional. Don't use weird selfies, don't use things, use a professional photo for the platforms you register on pw, F, and all that. Two, your bio has to be compelling. You need to briefly describe yourself, your skills, and what you offer in a very compelling manner. You copy what you write will make a client or a person wants to work with you, either reach out or get off your profile and go look for somebody. A strong profile on job platforms also has portfolio samples. We've talked about putting together a portfolio in previous lessons. A portfolio is important and it's not as scary as it usually sounds. We talked about taking practice exercises you've done in class and just adding them to your portfolio. You do a few projects here and there for your friends and family and, you know, add them to your portfolio. As a beginner, I think people actually understand when you go out of your way to get samples or to put together a portfolio when you've not worked with any client, and that shows dedication and commitment. A portfolio goes a long way, in helping you get the client. People need to know that you can actually do something. And when you upload examples of your work, you see a portfolio literally is just a showcase of work you've done. Now, when you upload examples of your work, trust you better. Or they trust you more than somebody who's not shown anything. They just said, I can build websites, but they have nothing to show. They have no evidence to show that. I can build websites. And this is something I have done in that regard. Now, the second way to build a strong portfolio, obviously, moving away from job platforms like rev and artwork and fiber is to kind of use social media for branding. Link TI is very important for professionals. So you want to make sure that your LinkedIn is not only existing, but it's also optimized for the job or the clients you want to attract. So optimize your profile with a professional photo, a convincing buyer, optimize your roles. Make sure you're communicating every role the way you have described what you're doing kind of adds up to what you're looking for. And that is why I said it's important to make sure you're able to use your transferable skills. Your advantage. Complete all sections from experience to education to certifications. Also, consider getting endorsements from your friends, from previous colleagues. Let them endorse you for the skills they know you are good at. My colleagues endorsed me for data analysis, research, and all that, ask your friends, family colleagues, previous colleagues, or current colleagues to endorse you. And then network. There's nothing as powerful as being able to just exist in the presence of people who are doing what you want to do or people who've been where you want to go. That is so powerful. Their greatness, their wisdom wraps up. It's important to connect and if you can chat with industry professionals, learn from them. Now, Instagram and YouTube are good visual profiles. If you think having an Instagram account or a YouTube channel, we add to your profile and just strengthen your profile, then you want to make sure that they are well positioned for Tube is great if you want to kind of build a community and have clients come to you. If you want to kind of showcase your knowledge and your skills and your expertise. YouTube is great. So is Instagram. How you choose to use them is what matters. You can also build a simple portfolio website, like US Wix to just build a simple website showcasing your there are many beginner friendly website builders like word, press, queer space, use whichever you want. If you think a portfolio website is important and might actually add onto your value and help build that credibility with potential clients. They're very easy to create, especially if you use these beginner friendly website builders. All you need to do is to add an about miss section who you are, your skills, and what value you offer or what services you offer. Very important to add your story and your mission because your story is your biggest qualification. So talk about your story. How do you find yourself here? What's your mission? What are you trying to achieve in life? This are some of the things we include in the About me section. Also include the services you offer. Obviously, you need to tell people this is what I do. This is what I can offer you. Include contact information. If somebody likes your portfolio website, you want to make sure they have a way to reach you. So include an email, a phone number, or whatever you're comfortable with. Include it. You have testimonials or reviews, let's say you have an apple profile and you've worked for a couple of clients and they left reviews for you, make sure to include those as testimonials in your portfolio website. Let me tell you, reviews actually convince people to buy from somebody or not too. Sometimes all a person needs to see is a positive review. So if you have any, if you can get a good word just put in towards your skills and services, make sure you include that in your portfolio website. When it comes to branding, you want to make sure that you are consistent across platforms. You might have a YouTube or Instagram, a LinkedIn or website, make sure the language is consistent. What you're offering is consistent. The skills you say you have consistent. So be consistent across platforms. You don't want somebody to have or get different vibes from you when they look at you LinkedIn. Then when you go to Instagram, they're getting a different persona. So be consistent. You messaging, be consistent in it. If you can use the same photo, use the same colors if you can just to create that consistency. Then keep your usernames and handles professional. I mean, news a good username. Is a name that screams. This is a professional. Don't use weird usernames and handles. Those can work against you. I mean, I don't think people are so petty, but some are petty. So make sure everything that you've included in your profile is working for you. If your public profiles, social media profiles are supposed to help you get clients or get jobs, then you want to make sure that they are professional. Avoid putting professional content. Can also use SCO to just use keywords to make sure that when somebody's looking for something related to what you do or a service on whichever platform, they find you. Now, the takeaway from this lesson is being intentional about your online presence is very important. A strong online presence easily attracts the right opportunities. Now, for this lesson's task, like you to reflect on your current online presence. Write down three things you can do to build or improve your online presence. You can talk about creating a LinkedIn account or updating it if you already have one. You can talk about building a portfolio website. You can talk about optimizing your YouTube or starting to create content on YouTube. Just write at least three things you can do to improve or build your online presence. Now, in the next lesson, I will teach you how to find clients and get remote jobs. 11. Getting Freelance Clients and Remote Jobs: Now let's put your online presence to work by finding clients or remote job opportunities depending on what interests you. In this lesson, we are going to learn strategies for acquiring clients or learning remote job opportunities. When it comes to finding freelance clients, there are three ways you can do this. And I'm going to share what I do. One, as a beginner, the best place or the easiest place to get clients, especially your first clients is freelance market places. So these are platforms like pw freelancer, five, people per hour, and many more. These platforms already have potential clients. There are people who go to these platforms just to look for people to work for them, people to complete tasks for them. So you create a profile, you tailor it to the service you're offering or the job you want to get. And then you apply for the jobs that are already on the platform. Or for, you know, platforms like Fiber, clients who want your services, interested in your services, find you. They reach out to you. For my case, I remember I got two transcription clients from UpWork. We started on UpWork and they loved my work. Every project I completed for them on UpWork they gave me five stars. Loved it. And so what happens, they requested me to go outside the platform. So instead of using APAC all the time, they would send projects to me directly, and that is how they became my clients, and I worked with them for years. These platforms are a good place to get your first clients, to have a fell of freelance work. These clients might just be the people you're working for on the platform. Be one time buyers. But if you provide quality and you do a good job and you build that connection with the client, they might become your long term client. Now, you can also get clients by pitching and sending proposals. This is the second way I get my clients. I'd find a company that I know has transcription files, like a research company or any other company. I think is a potential client. I look at their work, their projects, and then I kind of pitch myself to them. So I send them an email with a proposal saying, I have seen what you do. This is how I can help you. Sometimes I even send a sample to kind of showcase my work. Let's say I'm looking to work with a podcast company. I want to transcribe the podcasts. I will download a file. I will transcribe it, and then I will send my pitch with that sample to show what I can do. So the second way you get clients is to just pitch directly to your potential clients. Send them an email, DM them or send them a message on LinkedIn. Important part when it comes to pitching directly to clients or sending proposals is you have to show how you will solve their problem. Don't just talk, show them. That is why I send a sample because they need to see that she is actually the solution. Number three is networking. I mean, I can't even tell you how many clients I have gotten from referrals. People I met someone, I talked about the kind of work I do, and when they met someone who was looking for the services I offer, they referred me to them. They said, I know a girl. She's called Tessa gamba. She has a transcription company she can help majority of my clients, they come from referrals. So networking is a big part if you want to get clients. Networking helps you meet like minded people, people in the same industry. And, you know, when you're in these forums and groups and just chatting to these people, you might get an opportunity or when you tell people what you do, they might refer their clients, their friends, their family. To you. So just put yourself out there, let people know what you do. Now, when it comes to landing remote jobs or remote rolls or getting remote work, you can one take advantage of job boards, remote job boards where they post remote rolls. So websites like WeWork remotely, remote.com, even LinkedIn JOBS has remote rolls. So job boards are a good place for beginners to find remote rolls. All you have to do is do your research. You can also look at websites of companies you want to work for. Let's say you're interested in working for Google remotely or meta or IBM. So what you do is you go to those companies websites and look at the job openings because nowadays most companies have remote shows. Look at the openings they have and if they have an open remote show that you can do, apply for it directly. Send in your resume or follow the application process. In order for you to kind of find roles in companies that you want to work for, you first need to do your research and know this is the job I need. So identify the job that you want first. Have a list of companies that you want to work with or that you want to work for. And then now you want to go to the company website and look for remote roles, open roles, and then apply directly. You can also get a remote role or remote work taking advantage of platforms like indeed, like LinkedIn, like Glass Door, all you have to do is perform job searches, look for open roles that are related to what you're looking for. If you're interested in data analysis, look for remote data analyst roles and then apply. You can actually set job alerts on LinkedIn so that every time a job you're interested in pops up, they notify you and you get to apply for the job first or be among the first applicants. Actually, if you do a bit of research, you'll realize that there are so many remote roles. In fact, almost every company hire people to work remotely. So are fully remote while others are hybrid. If you look carefully and you look well and you position yourself well, it won't take you long to learn your first remote role. When it comes to working online, whether you are a freelancer, someone who's working remotely, or you are running an online business, it's very important to cultivate and build relationships with your clients, with your customers. With the companies you end up working for remotely. Now, how do you build long term relationships with the different people you're working with? The first and most effective way is to deliver quality work. That is enough to keep someone coming back or to keep a job for long. You must meet or exceed your client's expectations or the expectations of the company you are working for. If you do this consistently, you will find that you'll be retained as a remote employee or your client will keep coming back. More and they'll come back with more projects, more work and you earn more money. This is also how you build consistent income. Now, the second way to build long term relationships is to communicate effectively. You want to make sure you have communicated when something will be late, when you'll be unavailable, when you won't meet a deadline. If something is not clear, ask questions. Communication is very important when it comes to building relationships with people, clients, companies, respond to their queries and concerns on time, send regular updates when working on a project. Our number three is to set clear expectations. Having a clear agreement on deliverables, on timelines, on payment, helps build a healthy and long lasting relationship with clients and companies because everybody knows what to expect, when to expect it, and how much that is going to cost them. Order to be successful when it comes to taking care of client needs, working remotely, just to become successful in these Arenas. Number one, practice follow up. Once you've completed a project to the client, after some time, follow up, ask them how did they find your work? Check in with them, find out whether there's another project that either they are looking to outsource now or in the future. It is also very important to request feedback. Always when you work for a client especially as a freelancer or as a business when you meet your customer's expectations, it's important to ask for feedback because testimonials build credibility. Always reach out to your clients and customers requesting feedback for the services you provided or for the product you sold them. Now, tip number three is to treat freelancing as a business. That is very important. Treating it as a business will help you maintain professionalism and establish guidelines to work along and also just build that mindset for success. Also open yourself up and you start thinking about how do I scale this? How do I make more money? How do I offer my clients better services? Treat it as a business, especially if you are freelancing. If you're employed remotely, then how you achieve success in this might be a bit different. But being professional cuts across. Be professional, whether you are a freelancer or a remote worker. Communicating time, like we just said, and always ask for feedback. Did you like what I completed? Are there any revisions to be made? Consistency and professionalism are key to attracting and retaining clients. If you're working remotely, are key to keeping your job. I usually say that getting clients or landing a remote job is honestly the easiest part of this whole thing. Once you've packaged yourself well, everything becomes easy to get. In fact, clients find you. Roles find you, but you first have to package and position yourself for success. Let that be the takeaway for you from this lesson. I'd like you to decide on whether you want to focus on freelancing or you're interested in getting a remote job, and be sure to outline your reasons as well, so you can always back up your decisions with justifiable reasons. Making this decision will help you attract the right opportunities. With that in mind, let's learn how to scale from small gigs to a profitable business coming up in the next lesson. 12. From Small Gigs to a Profitable Online Business: Transform your side gigs into a sustainable, profitable business. Now, the goal for this lesson is to provide strategies for scaling up your online income. Now, why is it important to scale up? You see, I started my online career by doing small gigs. I was doing small writing gigs on a writer, you know, transcribing files, short files on Verbit. Sometimes I'm doing three jobs in a week. I started by making $20 a month from writing, and then my income increased to 70 to $102,500. You see, scaling is important for income growth. It allows you to break free from income ceilings. Two, it is essential for business stability. Now, you must diversify your income sources to reduce risk. When you start, it's kind of very unpredictable. Sometimes you're making $70, sometimes $1,000, sometimes you're making zero. Now, that is the kind of risk you want to reduce. You want to make sure that you have some sort of consistent income, and that comes in by diversifying your income sources. Also, scaling is important for professional advancement. Scaling allows you to build a brand and reputation in your industry. There are three steps you can take to scale your business, and we are going to go through each one of them. The first step is to diversify your services. Now, you can do this by adding complimentary services. If let's say you're offering your clients digital marketing services, you can start training future digital marketers. Oh, you can start consulting as well. Adding more complimentary services enables you to make more money from different things. You can start selling products that are relevant for what you're providing for the services you're providing, maybe templates, maybe guides. You can even create a court Remember, I started with writing, and then I went into transcription. And now as we speak, I do transcription. I train, I consult, I offer mentorship and I also do digital marketing. So I diversified my services. You can also diversify your services by bundling them, offering your clients packages so that they don't just buy one thing. They buy a package, maybe services and some products and, you know, consultancy. Packaging your services enables you to make more money from one purchase compared to how much you'd make if you're just selling one portion or just one now, the second step to scale your business is to raise your rates, and when do you raise your rates? You start charging more raising your rates after you've gained experience. Let's say you have been active in the industry for two years. That's two years of experience. As far as I'm concerned, two years is enough time for you to have gained experience and gained positive feedback. That is when you start thinking about raising your rates. When you've done so much work, you've built expertise. You know what you're doing. Your service quality has improved. You've gotten a significant number of positive feedback from your past and current clients and customers. Now, that is when you justify raising your rates. And when you raise your rates, it's important to communicate this to your current and past clients. You must highlight the raised rates and explain the value that adds. What comes with your increased rate? That is what to tell your clients so that you can justify increasing your rates to them. Now, the third step to scaling is to automate processes and use tools to make your work easier and also get work done faster in a short time. Important to streamline processes. You see, it can be so overwhelming. The freelance business, it can be so overwhelming. So making sure that your process is streamlined because when you're in this field, especially when you start as a beginner, you're doing everything from marketing to creating to doing the services to invoicing, scheduling, you must do everything from step one, the last one because you're not in a position to bring in more people, you can't afford them maybe. So everything is on you. It's important to automate processes ,Ts that you can automate and to use tools, scheduling tools, invoicing tools, project management tools to make your work easier and faster. Now, for project management, you can rely on free versions of tools like Asana to just make sure that you're managing your projects efficiently. For invoicing, you can use QuickBooks or an alternative to QuickBooks, whatever works for you. Just make sure that you're using tools that are actually making your work better. That you don't find yourself doing everything when there's a tool out there that can actually do that for you. All you have to do is set it up. For me, right now, the point I am at in my business is I want to automate most of my services because it can be so overwhelming. Sometimes I'm so tired, especially before I brought in my team. I used to do everything alone and it was so overwhelming because I had to do everything and sometimes I'd spend so much time doing admin tasks like invoicing and other project just doing stuff that are not directly making me money. So my goal right now is to make sure that I am automating those admin tasks, as many as I can, those that I can automate and using tools to make my work easier as far as admin tasks are concerned, so I can have more time to create content to teach, to provide services because that builds my business. Now, scaling from set gigs to a profitable business requires you to build a br we've talked about branding in previous lessons. But in order for you to build, you know, a strong personal brand or business brand, you must develop a unique value proposition. What is the unique thing that you bring to the market? What makes you stand out from the competition? Why should clients, leave every other person offering the same services you're offering and choose you? So you have to identify a unique value proposition. What sets you apart? Consistent branding is also important. When it comes to just building a good, strong, personal or business brand, make sure that you have a logo that you're using or you're using the same image in all your profiles or most of your profiles that are relevant. Your messaging should be consistent. People should know this is our test biix. When they find a piece of content somewhere, they already know this is you, this is your brand, from maybe the color scheme, from the messaging, the way you talk, the way you write. So try to use consistent branding. A brand also requires you to make use of marketing shortages, whether it's SEO content marketing. You want to make sure that you're not just building a brand for you. You're putting it out there. So you have to market it in a way. You don't have to pay for ads, but make sure you're taking advantage of the freeways you can market yourself. Use social media, email marketing, use content to get your brand out. Whatever you can to make sure that people know who you are and what you have to offer, and they understand your brand. Now, scaling is also building a team, and this happens when it happens. Don't have to rush it. Personally, I have worked alone for so many years. I got to start adding people onto my team after I think five, six years of working alone. That's when I thought of getting, you know, a personal assistant, a writer, someone to manage my website. You grow your business, you can consider getting part time or full time staff to help you get work done. If admin tasks wear you down, then try and bring in help. Now, you can hire people or you can outsource. You can outsource functions that you don't want to do, but you also don't want to kind of get someone or hire someone and start paying them a salary. You can use up work to outsource to freelancers. Use for. People who offer you, you know, one time services. You don't have to commit. When you have something that needs to be done and you can't do it, you just source or freelancer to work on it. Once that person completes the project, your relationship is done. So you don't have to hire if you're not in a position too, if you don't have the capability, the financial muscle yet, you can outsource. And in my experience, outsourcing is cheaper, though it has its own risks, but it's cheaper, especially for someone who's just growing, who's starting to scale. Now, remember, when you start working with people, I feel like the biggest challenge is managing them. I had transcribers, many transcribers, and managing them was my biggest headache. So as you try to bring in more people into your business, into your brand, remember that you need to also work on your leadership skills, communication, management. You need to know what will be the culture around here. How should people behave? Are there rules? Because if you don't set guidelines, if your leadership skills are wanting, your team is going to weigh you down instead of lifting you up. So just be aware of the challenges that come with, you know, having more people to work with. Now, you not only have a business to run, you also have people to manage, and people are not the easiest to manage. They don't understand your business the way you do. They don't have the same goals like you. So it's up to you to streamline everything, to make sure that everyone and everything is working to better your business and there's a friend of mine who gave me this piece of advice some years ago. She said, Take your time to hire. Don't be in a rush to hire the first person that comes to you. Take your time to hire and be quick to fire. So take your time to hire and be quick to fire. Don't give people too many chances to work all over you. So I'm going to give you the same advice, and I hope you use it. Now, as you scale your business, I'm going to give you some tips or some things to think about. Think about financial management. You want to make sure that you're managing your finances, well. Businesses have overhead costs. You have to spend on things. If you have a team, you have to pay them. There's also profit to consider. So make sure that the way you're managing your finances is working for you, not against your business. Keep track of your expenses, know what you spend every month and on what. Keep track of your revenue. How much profit are you making in a month? It increasing or dropping? Where is your profit going? Are you investing it back into the business? Make sure to stay on top of your finances. Tip number two, there are legal considerations to make. Contracts, especially when you start bringing in people, their contracts to think about. Do you want to create the contracts yourself? Do you want to have an in house legal person? Would you rather outsource the legal services? So think about about business registrations and taxes. Taxes are important, regardless of the country you live in. So make sure you know to navigate all these things. Don't ignore them. I know when you're starting, they're not really in your mind. They're like, at the back of your mind. Taxes don't really matter. You're not making as much money. So when you scale and you start making more money because you've diversified your income, then you must think about taxes. For this lessons task, I'd like you to reflect on how you can scale your current or future online gig into a more profitable online business, and write down the steps you plan to take. Now, let's say you are working on a gig right now or you already know what you want to start with. Now you're looking to get your first gig. Think about how you're going to scale that. Write down the steps you take that will lead you to turning this into a profitable business. Talk about outsourcing, raising your rates, bundling your services. Financial freedom is the goal, right. In the next lesson, we're going to talk about your journey to financial freedom, so I'll see you there. 13. Your Journey to Financial Freedom: This lesson, we are going to talk about your journey to financial freedom and how making money online can get you there. I am very passionate about financial freedom. Everything I do is for me to get closer to achieving financial freedom. And I know this is very important to many people. Now, in simple terms, financial freedom is the ability to live life on your own terms without worrying about money. You can travel to any country and live there for months without worrying about money. You can spend a whole week with your family on vacation without worrying about money. For me, financial freedom means I can live the life that I want without being limited by money. I know you understand that money can't really limit you. Let's say you want to go to New Zealand, you have everything, all the documents to get you to New Zealand, but you don't have money. For plane tickets to New Zealand. You see? If New Zealand is your dream, if you never make enough money to get your ticket, you'll never go to New Zealand. For me, financial freedom is really being able to do the things that I want to do without money getting in the way. Now, how can making money online lead to financial freedom? I started this class by saying that there are benefits, one being being able to diversify income. I remember saying that you can make as much money as you want when it comes to making money online because you can build multiple streams of income. You can offer services as one stream, and then you can train people. You can do affiliate marketing. You can offer consultancy services. You can even be invited to events as a speaker and get paid for that. You can write a book and sell other digital products. There are so many ways to make money online. And the beauty of this space is you don't have to constrain yourself to just now, being able to create multiple streams of income means you will make as much money as your goals allow you to. Let's say your goal is to eventually make $10,000 a month. That is very attainable. If you plan yourself well, you can hit that goal. And if making $10,000 a month is what financial freedom means, for you, then you are financially free. So unlike traditional work, making money online allows you to achieve financial freedom because it gives you ways, there are so many ways for you to go at it. And if you're smart about it, you can create long term stability in that you have consistent income. You've scaled your business. You have set up processes, you have a team, and your business can run with or without you. That way, your business is more stable. You're able to make a certain amount of money long term because you are strategic. You're not just relying on the one time payments that you receive just relying on getting paid after you've done something. You've set up passive income streams, things that will make you money on autopilot. Now, this long term stability leads to financial freedom. Now one thing to note is achieving financial freedom requires consistent action. You must be consistent in putting effort and strategizing and hitting your goals. Now, growth is important when it comes to financial freedom. So developing skills, learning and growing, also expanding your services and scaling your income will eventually lead you to financial freedom. So achieving financial freedom doesn't just come overnight or in one year. You need to strategize for it. Every action you take leads you to that. So make sure that the actions you're taking are consistent. You growth is consistent, and you are tracking your progress to your goal. Now, in order for you to achieve financial freedom, there's one thing you must do before you even start working towards financial freedom. You must define financial freedom for yourself. Believe it or not, it doesn't mean the same thing for everybody. My perception or my idea of financial freedom is, I know, different from other people. I've already told you what financial freedom means for me. So ask yourself, what does financial freedom mean to you? Is it making $10,000 a month? Is that what you consider financial freedom? Is it being able to quit your day job and still live a comfortable life? Is it saving enough money to retire early? Is it buying a home? Is it traveling the world? So first, you have to define financial freedom for yourself. Allows you to make sure you have clear goals that will lead you to your financial freedom. Your journey to financial freedom starts now. These strategies will not only help you make money online, but also build wealth. Now, for this lessons task, I'd like you to reflect on what financial freedom means to you. Write it down. Also write down how you will know that you've achieved financial freedom. Remember, in order for you to achieve goals and to progress, you need to set clear SMRT goals. So you need to know when you've achieved financial freedom. So first, you need to know what does it mean to you. So reflect on that and put it down in the workbook. Now, in the next lesson, we will do a recap of everything we've covered in this class. I'll see you there. 14. Final Thoughts: Now, as you conclude this class, I'd like you to take this whole.
