1. Class introduction : Hi, Welcome to my class. I'm Amir, a character
artist and illustrator. And this short class, I chose a fun sample
projects to help you better understand the
masking in Procreate, you can create a
simple design of any landscape or
senior you like. For my project, I made
this night scene. I've helped you create
yours step-by-step, starting with a rough sketch all the way through color blocking, texturing, and adding
the final touches. You can use this final design later as a print on any medium. There you can celebrate the new skills you've just
added to your skill set. It's a fun class for anyone interested in trying
something new today. So grab your iPad and pencil and let's
jump into the glass.
2. Class Project : Welcome to the class. So at first I'll tell you
what I will use here. I'm using my iPad stylus
and of course Procreate, but you can still
follow along with me on any software of your choice. We will go through all those
steps later in the class. And once you've
finished your theme, all they need to do is just
to hit to the Projects and Resources section and
upload your project. You can add as many images
as you can and of course, write whatever you want
or ask about anything. And I'll be more than
happy to answer you. Once you do this,
just publish and I can't wait to see what
you'll come up with. So let's head to
the first lesson.
3. Rough Sketching : So for the first
lesson in the class, we will work on
our rough sketch. So I open Procreate and I choose the six B pencil brush in the default brushes and just
start sketching my scene. If you still have to
decide what you're going to draw, It's very simple. You can just head to the project and resources section below this class and you can
simply download my sketch. You can also head to
Pinterest and get some inspiration from there and watch as many
references as you can. I believe it will help you
a lot to create your scene. Keep it very simple and enjoy the process as they
always say, my classes. As you can see here, I'm
working on my scene. I created the main shape, mark in the circle or rectangle, a pendant or anything. Or you just start to mask
older layers inside of it. You start to draw
inside your main shape. Try to keep it simple
and try to work more on the foreground and the
background of your scene. So as you can see here, drawing some trees,
some hanging branches. And so you can draw
mountains, seas, or anything. Just keep it very simple. You can decide whether
it's a night scene, whether it's the sunset or
anything that you like. And you just keep going with this sketching brush very
roughly, very easily. No polished layers or anything. And we will keep going. And you can delete
anything from this sketch. Now that I finished
my rough sketch, Let's head to the next lesson
to start color blocking.
4. Color block: Now that we've finished
our rough sketch, we will start color blocking. You can use a color palette, whether it's the default
palette or you can do the load any palette online. Alright, let's start. I will first set the background
layer as something dark. And I will head to the hue saturation and
brightness and change the color for my sketch to be a little bit brighter
on this background. To be clear for me to
work later on this. Alright. And now I'll just start
working on blocking the colors in the shapes that have just
finished the sketch. Alright, let's choose
this mono line brush. As you can see, I'm drawing my circle and you can just tap with one finger to be a sharp
circle and accurate one, and you will just
drag the color. Now I'm duplicating
this circle like this. And I hated the settings for the move tool and
turn on the snapping. Once I duplicated my
circle like this, I will just choose the
selection tool and choose the rectangle
selection like this. And in the new layer I just drag and drop the
color like this. Alright, let's keep going. And now I just added my shape so that it gets more
tangent to the circles. And now I'll just
pinch them together, the three layers to make
the shape as one shape. Now let's just change
the colors a little bit. And I'll start
working on my design. Let me first work
more on the colors. Just like that and maybe make
this a little bit darker. Color blocking is
really amazing step, you can choose any
color you want. Now let's create our
first masking layer. You will create a layer and
just hit the icon and choose clipping mask so
that this layer is masked inside the main
shape of your design. Makes sure that each
layer is closed when you're working on the lines so that when
you drag the color, it just doesn't go over all. The canvas, just goes inside the layer or the lines
as you've just closed. All right. I'll go a bit faster now. As it's just a repetitive step. You're just creating new layer for each part of your design. And you simply draw a simple line with
the monoline brush. For the final lines to be clean. Not sketchy or anything. I just drove onto the sketch and create a layer
for each part of your design. Just like this. I really like how the design
is just coming together. After adding the colors, especially when the
palate is good. You can choose any
color palette you want. Usually I choose Adobe Cooler for choosing a perfect
color palette. Or sometimes when I'm just
surfing on Pinterest and find a nice color palette
I just saved this are painted in a board
for color palettes. You can also search
on Pinterest with limited color
palettes and you'll find amazing palettes
with limited colors, maybe three or four maximum. Alright, let's keep going. You just repeat the same steps. Every time. Create New Layer with
a monoline brush. You draw the lawyers sketch
just like this and drag the color inside of
the layer, and so on. Now this plant, I relay
the colors so far. And this mushroom. Alright. And now let's work on this moon. Okay? And now I will work
on the branches. Just keeps more than simple. Don't go so far with
the details here. We have a specific
lesson later for this O. Right? Now Let's create more final
layer for these two branches. Just like that. That's
it for this step. Now the color blocking is done. Let's just head
to the next layer to add textures to our design.
5. Texturing: After we finish the
color blocking, Let's now head to a more interesting step
which is adding textures. And how are we gonna do
this? It's very simple. We'll just turn off the
layer of the sketch. And we will now head to each
layer we have in the design. Ellie will just make alpha lock. Start adding some
textures inside of it. I'm using an
interesting brush which is called bonobo chalk. You can also use any texture
brush that you like. It's also are repetitive step and you will keep doing the same steps
for all the layers, but it's really rewarding. I really like this
topic because it just adds that kind of depth and that kind of
taste for your design. These textures act as the
shadow and the light. Alright? So simply you just hit alpha lock
for each layer, for the pixels to be just
looked inside the layer. And you simply choose
any texture brush. And with a darker
color than the layer, you simply draw the shadows
and with a lighter color. You can work on the light. And so on. Right? Let's work with this color.
It looks interesting. I hope you're following
along with me now. I'm really excited to see
what you guys are going to come up with in the
project section. And it's also a nice
opportunity for you to share this with your
fellow students. All right, let's keep going. You simply choose the layer hat on the Layer icon and
choose alpha lock. Just like this, and
with a darker color, you make the shadows and we'll
end with a lighter color. You make the lights. So you can consider
this step as texturing, slash shading and lighting. Right? Let's keep going. Feel free to mix more than one color
inside of each shapes. Sometimes I just
like to do this. All right, Let's keep going. Now for this tree up there, you just add some shadows, and also for this leaf, right? And some lights. And let's keep going. Now let's choose this light color, right? And put them on. Let's add some
yellowish color to it. And now for this branch, Let's just add some
shadows and some lighting. Maybe this bright magenta color for lighting these
trees up there. It does add something. So it's all about masking
layers inside of layers to make nice effects and colors. Now let's just select
some parts of this. See back there to
make it lighter. Alright? And maybe with
the selection tool, let's create some clouds here. Just so random and nice. And to give it a
lighter color than the sky color, just like this. Alright. Now let's work on this layer. Also alpha lock. Let's just change the color for this one and also hit alpha
lock together some shadows. Let's keep moving right. Now for this part
of the drawing, I just give it some shading. And also for this
mushroom, just like this, and for the stem, Let's give us some shading here below this. And for these small bushes, I just wanted to make it like blended with the purple
land below them. And let's just give
them this yellow color. All right, let's
now work more on this mushroom, just like this. And now with the mono
line, brush again, let's make some dots
of white dots here. For the mushroom. Just like this. It's
really special. Alright, back to
the texture brush. Let's add some shading
to these dots. And also below them. Just some dark red color here. It also adds more
depth or right. I think that's it. Now we just finished shading and lighting
and texturing this design. Let's now head to
the next lesson, which is adding more details.
6. Adding Details: Now that you've finished adding textures and shading
lighting for the design, it's now a really
interesting step, which is adding more details. So simply we will just keep
going with the masking. We'll create a new layer
m and mascot here. Just like this, we will create some shadow
inside the whole design. We will make the blending
mode as multiply. It simply gave the
paper cut effect. Alright, Now this
very thin brush, but let's add more details
to the design here. We will start with this. Very simply. You can create these simple
lines just like that. Now, let's head to this layer. Alright. Let's now head to this leaf above n
with a dark color, you will just start working
on some detailing like this, simple lines, just like that. Now for this layer, Let's create some simple
spots, just like this. Does give the design this
cartoony look, right? Feels as if it's like the background of a
game or something. I really like how
it looks right now. Alright, let's keep moving. In this step of the process, you can simply add any kind of details that
you can ever imagine. It's just based on
your preference. And you can keep adding
details to each layer. Alright, let's keep going. All right, and now for this
huge rock or mountain here, that's making some
lines just like that. And also here, this layer, I just noticed that I totally forgot to
texture this layer. So let's start doing this now. Let's make the
alpha lock and also the bonobo chalk or
any texture brush. Let's give it some lighting
and shading, just like this. And also this layer.
That's much better. Alright. Now let's make some simple
details here and there. Just like this. I'm now adding some
light around the moon. Like a yellow halo around it. Looks nice. Now, let's make
the blending mode as overlay to make
it more bright. And also in the
same overlay layer, let's make some lights
here and there. Now I'm drawing some stars
in the sky to make up, to make it more night. It looks interesting. Alright, let's keep moving. Now. I feel it looks really nice. I really like the design so far. All right, let's keep moving. With a magenta color. I will simply give this
mushroom sunlight, just like this. And that's it. I think we finished this step. So let's head to the final
lesson in the class, which is adding
the final touches before we finish this design.
7. Final Touches: For the final
lesson here we will work on the final
touches for this design. I work more on the use
iteration of the background. Let's change the
colors a little bit. Maybe try something dark
and something light. You just keep playing
around until you find something that's
you're satisfied with. I believe we're close. Alright. Maybe you change
the hue a little bit. That looks nice. Let's now create a
new layer above that. And let's create some
glow around the shape. As if the outer
glow around this. And as you can see, it just adds more to the effect
of the paper cut. That's nice. So let's keep going. You can of course replace this
with a drop shadow effect. The darker color around it. It will be also nice. And you can play with
the blending modes that you find
something that's cool. Just like this. Let's make it smaller. That's nice. Alright. I made the blending
mode for this halo as Ed and I put the opacity
a little bit down. Alright? Alright,
now as you can see, I'm just selecting
all the layers for my design after of course, duplicating this whole file
for not to lose anything. And that'll be just selecting
oldest. Just say that. And I will just group this. I'll make it all as a group. Just like this and hit flatten. And now it's just one layer. Let's now head to
the adjustments and let's dry some effects
here and there. Alright, let's start
with the gradient map. As you can see, your design
is changing based on the color modes here in
the gradient library. And you can come up with
different varieties from your, from one sample design. I really liked those
effects. It's amazing. And this one is awesome. Yeah, this great. Alright. This one
looks really amazing. And it's just serve the
night effect for the design. But let's just get back to that original one and try
some more adjustments. Alright, let's head to
the chromatic aberration. And as you can see, it just adds some effects here and there. And you can simply
drag the circle around your design,
choose the effect. What else? We also have
this nice effect once you swipe to the right and to the left to take this
effect up and down. Once you finish your design, you can play with the
adjustments as you want, and it's simply add
something to your design. It changed something. Now I'm playing with
the color balance. Alright, Let's try something very light for the background. Maybe a little bit
pinkish or salmon color. Just like this. Let's duplicate the design and put the two
different backgrounds, light and dark together. I think it's a very
nice and that's it. And now we've
finished our class. I'm really happy with
the final result. I hope that you enjoyed the
class and I really hope that you just finished design
right now with me. Don't hesitate to
ask me anything about the class
or about anything related to procreate
or drawing in general and the discussion
board below the class. And also I just
can't wait to see your projects in the
project section. Then of course,
feel free to check my channel for more classes. And of course, if you'd like to share your design on Instagram, don't forget to tag
me with this handle so that I can find it
