Learn to Play Christmas Carols (volume 1)

1. Overview: Hey, guys, T j visit and I'm here to teach you to play Christmas girls. Let's face it, everybody loves learning to play Christmas carols. We're gonna learn four prisoners carols in this class We're enjoying the world. Watch it, Angels We have heard And Holy has with all my classes I go left hand right and step by step section all the sheet music is provided for absolutely free May be wondering cannot begin or do this Somebody has just started to learn how to do this Absolutely. If you've taken my last class before learned piano in 45 days is a great next step We haven't taken that. Go ahead, Take that one. Most of that class is absolutely free. Not only do I show you how to play these carols, I'm gonna show you some creative things to do a little bit harder. I hope you enjoy. Thanks. 2. Sheet music overview: welcome to learn to play Christmas carols. You should see a bunch of PDF files in this section. Go ahead and download all those pdf files, and I want you to print up all those pdf files. You'll see that I have a bunch of different versions of these songs, and when it can give you an overview of the sheet music, let me just turn to here. Here's my file and I'm gonna shake some example. Let's just look at joy to the world here. We have just regular joy to the world, and you can see here that I've just got the sheet music. I've got nothing but notes and that's it. Don't have any fingering markings. Okay, so that's just the regular blank version. You know, if you know a lot about music already, if you know how to read pretty well, you may just want to play the song from this version, but let's say you don't know as much. Well, I've got another version. Let's look a joy to the world, the easier. None of the edited version. That's what I meant to say. Look at this. I've got fingering is written. I've got notes written. I've got little helpful. It's OK. So I just want to kind of do this video to show you an overview of some of the sheet music problems you're gonna have. Print out all these. Look at the edited version. Look at the non edited version. Maybe start with the edited version and just put this together in a folder. Okay? And I'll see you guys in the next video where we talk about the actual plane. 3. What child is this left hand: okay. It rare looking at the left hand to watch. How old is this? I'm gonna play for you. Four chords that you have to know. You're gonna use these four quarts in most of the song. Here's the 1st 1 The 2nd 1 third and forth She this one more time King noticed a few things. I'm going straight down. I go down, I go down, I go down. Okay. The first court is a minor A C and E. I notice this is not an inversion. I'm starting on a see and then e So this is Rick position. The next one is the court. You should know. It's the G major G B and D root position. The next, when you should know F A c and the next one the e major chord e sharp. And after practicing that a few times, this is how I'd like you to play it. Just start with this note. Be able to go straight down from the bottom of a left, Then add the other notes. Okay. In the next part of the song, you're gonna have this court G seen. This is in the chorus part of the song, but right after that you go to this cord. You had that before then, then? Okay, so in this home, we have two basic core progressions. This the 1st 1 and then this court G C and E F C major inversion going straight down practice. Both of those learned both of those, and that really is the total of the left hand. 4. What child is this right hand 1: Okay. We're looking at the right hand. To what child is this? I want to first show you the position I start off on. I'm starting on this. They appear middle. Sees here The A's here. My twos on C three on D for on E and five is on the f sharp. So make sure you're in this position again. One on C. I mean one on a two on C three. Andi for one e 51 f sharp. Just relax the hands in this position. Gonna play for you the first part? Real slow. Okay, let's go back to this position and talk about some specifics. Start off. But now look here. I get the two on B and then the one over on G. You know what happens if I don't do this? I'm going to do some awkward throw over. I don't want to do that. We're all run out of fingers. So what I do is to on be enables my one on G, which is the lowest note up Now. We're gonna go lower, watch what I do to on a 23 own A in the two Angie shirt. Four 2 to 1 going even lower. So what you have is what I call position shifts. We start off in this position, we start to drift Mawr here. We sort of shift down to here. We don't do this. We just play any old fingering. We're gonna easily run out of fingers. And it's going to sound really awkward and really disjointed. So a few things to remember free to To to one. I would practice that first part getting that perfect to the next part. Theun 23 What happens if I just do to to have toe awkwardly move in here? That is gonna be hard to move down. It's possible to do, but it's very awkward. I really like this fingering 23 than my thumb is free to go down here too easy. Okay, Now, what you're gonna find in this song is that if you learn that first part, you learn a lot of the rest of the song. I'm gonna talk about that as we move through the different parts. But for now, let's get just our right hand down to this opening part. I'll play it one more time 5. What child is this right hand 2: Okay. Here. We're looking at the right hand part to to what child is this notice? It starts off just like same position has part one. But here's where it gets different on that. See, it goes to three on being then one on a. Now, watch this. Flip over to three on the sharp to an usher back to 300 shirt and then back to four on a a and then another A. So you've got this part down, Theo. There's no reason to practice that again if you've already got that. So I would if you have that part down, start on this four on C. And then instead of going to to on A like you did before, you're gonna see be a flip over G sharp F shirt, G sharp four on a four on a. Okay. 6. What child is this right hand 3: Okay. Here. We're looking at the right hand. The final part of the right hand. On what child is this here? I've just left off on here. A and then another A. Then I'm just gonna pick up the hand and move it. Because this is the chorus. I'm going to move it to four on this G and let me play the rest of the right hand. Starting on this four on this G has I'm playing this. See if you can recognize some of the parts we've had before. - Did you notice that this part you've had before you've had that at the very first section, and then you go back up and do the high part on then all of this is familiar through Understand? Most of this is the same territory. That's why I tell you in the first right hand video, once you get this first part down, and certainly when you get the second part down, this last part is pretty easy. Here is the most difficult maneuver. I start four on G G f sharp and then I've got this one here. But I gotta go way lower. And I did it. This way I did one on day 21 B and then one on G. So one on D 200 and then one on G. That works for me. It might be a little hard for you if you're beginning student. So here's another way of doing and it's totally up to you. Uh, one look at this. This is called finger Substitute. I go one on D, the three takes over and then I get the two Ownby. It separates center. So you've got two options. Option one one. Throw over to to for over 21 Option two. Do the substitute. I'll continue playing Teoh e just moved back up top. Uh, I'll do the substitute thing is just like before. And then I slow down at the end. So work that both ways Whatever fingering works for you, just go ahead and use that. It's no big deal if you want to change fingering slightly as long as it sounds connected 7. O holy night right hand 1: Okay. Here. We're looking at the first part of O Holy night. I'm going to go through the right hand part by part, and I'm going to show you some counting. So look at my position. I've got one on E two on G at the very beginning, I'm just gonna play this. Okay, let's break it down. I start with one on E and two on G. Here's the first part. Now, look here I go to the A Here I go to a one on F three on a five on C, then down to the to own Jeep. And now look what happens. I've got to get my five over to G to finish out the phrase. That's probably the hardest move. Let me do that. Move again. Five on high. C 22 on G. Quick, move five on G on. Then I'm home free for the rest of the phrase. Okay. I'm gonna explain in the theory videos how to account 68 and 12 8 time. I'm just gonna count along right here. We really want to get the proportions of the notes, um, against each other. Very well. Listen, 123123 Did you hear what I did? I gave this first note three counts. 123 Next, 12 on the last one is the quickest because it's the eighth note. So it is 1/3 as long has the dotted quarter and 1/2 assed long has the quarter. I explain this all well in the theory. Videos on dotted and quarter notes and 68 12 8 time lurches Do this one more time. 1231231231 To remember. When you see in the sheet music, this one is tied over. I hope you've printed out the sheet music. Now this one is tied over a one 231231233123456 This is the longest one because it's a dotted half note, so that's equal to 68 minutes. So 1234 56 one to move over. 312312312312312123456 Off we came. We do that one more time and counting if you're confused on the county definitely watch the theory videos that I have at the top of the edited sheet music. I talk about some of the videos you should watch. That really explains counting in this 12 8 time signature. Okay, one more time. I'm gonna play this part counting and showing you the fingering. Here we go. Starting on one. The to his own G one on E to Andre. Here we go. 123123123123123123123 For 5612312231231231223456 And stuff. Be sure you master that left that right hand part getting that fingering down before you attempt to put it with the left hand. And I'll see in the next video when we're gonna look at the next section which is very similar to this, but gets a little bit different 8. O holy night right hand 2: Okay. Here. We're looking the next part of the right hand. We have a brief pause, and then we go into the next section, I'll play the whole thing for you. It starts off very similar, but then it's gonna take a different turn. Here's a different term. Okay. Did you notice you started off like this playing kind of faster? But just listen now before, remember, you went to five on the second G, But note you got to do something different. Here. You go like this, then to two of our own f sharp, then one on E. Now, then go to four on B. Why don't you go to four on B? Because later you're gonna have to go to five on that high C. As you can see. Okay, Play this one more time. I'll talk about the fingering, Maura and the notes more than we're gonna do some counting. So I've got my one on E two on G, just like before. Free on a one on F five on high, C two on G three on G two on F sharp, one on me up to four on B on the back down to one on me. All right. Good master that then let's get into the counting And again has said in the last video Make sure you understand the counting in 12 8 with the dotted quarter notes and the dotted half notes and understand the theory of that. I'm gonna count along and play. Here we go. 1231231231231231231 234561 23123123123123123123456 and stuff a good master this right hand and we'll see in the next video when we talk about the next part in the right hand, right before the chorus. 9. O holy night right hand 3: here. We're looking at the next part of the right hand. You probably recognize the lyrics. A thrill of hope that were the weary world rejoices. Here I am. I've just played this e My three is now on this G. Okay, so I started on three right here, G four on a one on D three on G four on a Now here, you have a choice. You could put the three on the next G on and then go up to the high sea. Or you could do this for 2 to 25 I personally find that way a little bit easier. But if you want to use three, that's up to you. Then we continue one on E four on a three on G. Another two G's right here than back to four. Same deal. You've already done this to on G five on C and then one oni and then ending back to the three on G just like you started before. And then right after this, we get in the chorus, fall on your knees. Okay. Counting. Make sure that this first note is just eight minutes. So this I'm gonna count it 12 Free 12312312312312312123 Free. 3123 3123 123123123456 Hold that last one out. Okay. Review. Just the right hand. Get the right hand down to the other sections as well. In the next videos, I'm to start breaking down the left hand into its various chords and then we're gonna get some videos on how to put it together. 10. O holy night left hand 1: and here we are, looking at to the left hand to part one of O holy night. I'm just gonna go over the basic courts first, and then I'm going to show how it works. With the right hand, you won't be able to see all the right hand just able to see part of it, as you can see, but you'll be able to hear it and you will to see the left hand. So the first court we have is just your normal C major chord. You've done this in several songs. Let me get the value of here. Here's your C major court. Pretty easy. You've done this before. This is in the boot camp. Easy. Next chord, the F major court. But we're doing the inversion. See, that's back to the C major chord. Now, this is something you almost never do. But we're going to do it here. We're going to jump down to this version of the C chord. Would it be possible to say on this version? Sure, but really, in this song, as you'll see when I put it with the melody, it just kind of has a darker tone to it. and it really works well with the song. They were going to go to the G court here and then back up to the C major chord. All right, so see this version of the F chord with see on the bottom, left in the middle a on top, back to see down to this. See here, G c. Any G b d back to see e g. Right here. Okay. Most of these cords you already know. You probably didn't know this one. Now I'm gonna show you how this goes with the right hand gonna go real simple up to the F court, back to the sea court and then down to this. See court here. Just jump over staying in it. Okay? One issue is how do we play the courts? I'm going to show you in a later video. How to do the are Pesci aged version of the That's a harder version. Don't do that now. Get the basics down. But one issue you might have is how often do you repeat these cores? And really, it's up to you. For example, the beginning you could repeated every single time you playing out on the right hand. Or you could hold it down, Do a little bit of up. That's really is up to you. You leave that up to your discretion, Okay? Hardest part. Really? Is this part here? When you're on the C chord, you go down to here in slow mode. Look, why do I go see e g? Move over to 500 E two on C and one, honey, practice that a few times from here to here. Can you do it one more time? Both hands. Michigan optional trick to hear it is real slow. Did you see what I did instead of just staying on G chord right at the last minute? I do this, Jeanne D and back to sequence. That's totally optional. You could just do this. Sounds fine, but this as a little bit more spice. Listen, adding that f right there really kind of builds up the tension when you go to that C chord later. All right. Good. So remember the process. Get just the cords down, practice the order of the cords, and then finally put it together with the right hand. I'll see in the next video 11. O holy night left hand 2: Okay, here we are, looking at part two in the left hand courts gonna go step by step with the cords, then show you a few tricks here. We started with seek or just like before then just like before to the f court cf a back to that C chord. But, uh oh, Here's comes something new. Look at this guy c e and a shark. I could explain what kind of core that is, but it's very technical, very theoretical. Let's just call it the ce a sharp chord and be done with it. So a bit of a stretch here to get it that a sharp then a court we've had before B E g. This is the e minor chord. It's just a Nen version, though with the beyond the bottom into this court Here. Be sharp f sharp. Be major chord on back to the e minor B e g. Okay, I'm gonna put it with right hand real slow up to the F course, just like before. Here's that stretch court jump down to here and you could use 531 or you could use 5 to 1. I could see either way way be major court here. Way back to the again. You could use this fingering or this thing. I could see it either way. Can you repeat the courts a lot? Of course you can. Yeah. You could do that where you can hold it down or repeat. Okay. So first, get the courts down. Second, get it to go with the right hand real slow, then maybe speeded up. Let me show you one trick at the very last part. Here you go to this be court here. You could if you want to do this at the last possible second or maybe even alert earlier. Maybe here. Kind of a clash, but notice what I did is still doing B D shirt. Have short I did me d sharp. A kind of adds some flavor. Listen rather than this'll sounds okay. This'll kind of awesome flavor experiment that if you like and I'll see you in the next video 12. O holy night left hand 3: Okay, We're looking at part three left hand chords. I'm gonna go back down to here to my e minor. The first court is the minor, but it's really quick because this is a quick eighth note. So it goes E minor, then t g chord. Now, this is a different version of the G chord. This is B. D and Gene. I've covered this before. If so, we've studied this before. Stay on the G chord for most of this measure. Now, up to on a minor court. You may have had this before, depending on what you studied. If not, you can look a theory. Videos. We've got C, obviously an inversion, and we go back to see in a minor, then see way to go back to this G a mine, See? And it stays on the sea. So this is your new guy? Well, it may not be new to you, depending on what you've done before On this A b g g g major inversion on the a minor in a version. All right, now how to put this together real slow, so I start on this e minor B e g. Did you see What? I didn't see how fast that ISS I just go from two here. 23 here. That fast change real slow, though. Stay on the G major core. You can repeat as much as you want. You could do this, or you could do this up to you. Now, next part, let's move on up to a minor. C major, A minor C major. I was just going back and forth, back and forth in the next part. She major. Okay, Same deal here. A minor back to the C major. Okay. May do this one time, riel. Real slow that I'm going to show you a little trick that's going to get you into the next part. The chorus fall on your knees. Here we go. E minor Staying on G major. A minor C major A minor C major G Major A minor C major C major. Now this is optional. Don't worry. That's gonna make sense. Once we get to the next video, that's gonna lead you into this next course. It said, Listen, I get into that yet, but when you one thing you could do after c major court is this play another C and B and then that leads you to the A minor chord. But let's not get into that yet. Okay? So be practicing both hands here, remember, get the court's first down, then gradually add to the right hand. You can repeat it as much as you like. 13. O holy night intro 1280x720: here we are looking at introductions to O holy Night with a lot of hymns and Christmas carols. You don't want to just start playing the song. You want to have an introduction? I could show you the different kinds of introductions to a holy knight that would work. First off, I start with my left hand on this. See? Here. This is middle C. So this is the see below. I get my right hand one on E the four on C and the two on G. So, essentially what On my plane? Just a C major chord. Just kind of a different version. Now, look at how this sounds nice on just my five fingers going up to this upper. So then I start. Okay, that's one possible. Here's another thing you can do to give Kabam or gravitas instead of just playing this. See here, play the C an octave below two. Do the same thing. Yeah, and then go. You can do this as many times as you want. Watch this. You're totally freed's your introduction. Now, if you want to something a little bit easier. Here's what we can dio start with the five on see here the one don't see here. Pause and go. That's just over. That's another possibility. Here's another possibility. Will do a hand over hand. You probably can't see all of this, But I'm starting on the low. See here Why don't see here. Hand over hand thing is out of the range of the camera. But you can keep going all the way up Just hand over hand Did stop and then start etcetera etcetera I kind of prefer this one That really is the most common one. You've probably seen that in a lot of churches. If you've ever heard this injury reports done all the time like that, OK, but play around with those different intros Really does sound nice at the very beginning of the song. 14. O holy night lh arpeggios 1280x720: Okay, here we are looking at a different way to play the left hand, you know, Holy night Now, before I showed you this way, etcetera, etcetera, just playing straight block chords. But I'm going to show you the very first part of O holy night A different way to play it. And you can apply this to the whole song. Okay. What am I doing? Do the same chord. But I'm just breaking it into single notes. This is called our Pesci ating. So I'm going e g rather than just e g. I'm going c f a rather than a block court. And I've got this G c e g c e rather than just a block court. Same thing for the next back to here. Uh, okay. The hardest thing to determine is how many of these go with the right hand outs? I'm gonna break this down for you. Remember the video when I counted? Hopefully you're able to count. 123123123 or 123456 If you have a dotted quarter note and again, don't forget to watch the theory of video I did on this that talks about dotted quarters and quarters and tied dotted quarters. But if it's a dotted quarter, you're going to give it three. So, like this, the very first note, Did you see the very first note I gave this? 123 The next one, I give it 12 and then a three here. And then 12312 No! Why's that? 123 and 12? Because that's a dotted quarter, which is three tied to 1/4 which is 23 plus two equals five, obviously. Okay, so starting at beginning 12312312312123123 This was gonna get six. This next guy. 123 45612312 three. Jumped down. 123123 31231 31231 Okay, now, obviously, don't just jump into this. Get your basic chords and right hand down first. Do that first and then get into this other method. Okay? I'm gonna play the next two phrases. Remember, I'm covering everything before the chorus fall on your knees it's up to that. I'm going to be the next two phrases Long may the world in a thrill of hope with both hands . Here we go in this new method. Okay, that's the next one. Now a Meyer court for this last part. Forget the optional method. Okay, so that shows you the basics of playing it with this method. This is harder. Not gonna lie. Make sure you get the other two down first before you embarking before you go embarking on this. 15. O holy night rolled 1280x720: okay. Here. I'm gonna show you another way of playing the left hand to O Holy night. We've talked about this method, the block method. We talked about this method. Now, look at this thing is called rolling the court. Notice why? Dio knows what I don't do. Don't do this. Don't let go of those. But you hold him down rolling the court. You can see why they call it rolling. This is real simple. You don't have to count a lot. It's something that you can dio. If you've got the basic chords down, you just want to make it a little more complicated sounding. And you can mix it up with rather regular block style so you could do this. Don't roll this log that roll this roll don't roll. You could do this on the other courts. The other phrases, for example Block, block, role roll. Yeah, you all sorts of things. You could do this with it. You can do the block, the role you could do all free. It's totally up you You can throw in whatever you want, So try those three message methods block roll on. Our appreciate has you learned this song and get better and better at it. 16. O holy night chorus right hand 1: Okay, here. We're looking at the chorus to O holy night. This is the part you know, from fall on your knees. Oh, hear the angel voices. I'm starting with the third finger on this high C just going to the 1st 4 measures of the chorus stopping right there. This is fairly easy. We just keep our third finger on C. We don't have to move out of position in the next section. We're gonna have to move a little bit of going to cover that in more detail. Probably the hardest thing is the counting. Hopefully you've watched the video on the different types of dotted notes we have in this song and you see this first. Now we have a high C. That's a dotted half note tied to a dotted quarter. So this is what you would count. 123456789 Kind of fades away, depending on how fast you go or you could count. 123456123 It all adds up to nine eight knows, and that's remember that. That's because you have a dotted half, which is equal to 68 notes and then a dotted quarter, which is three. And, of course, six plus three is nine. So we start this off account, I'm gonna do a little bit faster so it doesn't fade. 123456789 123456789 12345123456123123 Remember that other one that's in the third measure, the D 12345 That's a dotted quarter tied to 1/4. So three plus two equals five. So fairly simple. Except for that county. Have some real long notes on this. You probably heard this many times. This is when the singer is really, really holding those notes out. Okay, I'll see. In the next right hand video, we're gonna look at the final section of the right hand chorus 17. O holy night chorus right hand 2: Okay, here we are, looking at the final right hand video. I'm starting in the fifth measure of the chorus. It's kind of an awkward place to start. It's when you at this high E right here. Let's go for it. - And now we've reached the end of this song. We'll talk to you about a few hard, tricky, fingering things. Here we start on E five, honey 24 on D 21 on g and then look going to five on the next. See, because you got to go lower. I think I moved back to three on C go up high, but no need to move the hands around They okay, that's about it. In terms of fingering, you've got to go low here. Now, this next part just move the hand up. Remember, this is a song. This is not written for the piano originally. So sometimes you're just gonna pick the hand up, for example, Here this is where the singer would breathe. So I just moved by. Hand up and take it to the end. Etcetera, etcetera. Let's talk about the counting here. Does pay attention to your dotted half notes. Your dotted quarter notes. I'm gonna count each one. Here we are on the word night. 12345612345123456789 12345123456789 and removed. 123456789123456789 123456 to 3. And it's customary at the end of the song to kind of slow down. So okay, one final tip on the right hand. Let's say you've got the basics down. And, of course, the next videos we're gonna deal with left hand chords will say You've got the song down. You won't do something a little fancy. Here's what you can do it the very end. I'm gonna start in the next to last Measure your threes back on this. See eyes that sound familiar? You've probably hurt singers do that instead of just doing a B will do. What's known has a turnaround, so we'll do the B, see the A B and then continue on with the sea to the day to the final now, so we get this faster and faster. That's a fancier ending. That's what a lot of vocalists do. Try it if you'd like. Okay, guys. See in the next video, when we start delving into the left hand 18. O holy night chorus left hand 1: Okay. Here we're looking at the left hand to O holy night. The chorus. I'm just gonna familiarize you with the basic chords We're going to start off with the a minor chord C e in a It's an inversion The e minor court and jean the regular version of the D minor back to the A minor. And then finally, the f minor. You should be familiar with most of these courts. If not head on over to the theory section. We've got them all explained So here it is, a minor he minor d minor a minor and then putting it with the right hand. We're just going to block style. We're not going to do this or the rolled is going to block style. Here we go. So I got a pretty quick change from a minor to every minor. Just movin like that. Okay, Now let's do it with the Are Pesci aided style. This. Here we go. Real slow way. Yeah, that's a possibility. Now, remember, you can mix this up. You could do this. You could go from arpeggio to block. You also can do the role core. Look at this. That sounds realized you could mix it all up. Check this out. You can do that. Can you repeat the court a bunch of times? Sure you can. So experiment with that. Remember, get the block style first, has you add to the writing and make sure your right hand is down pretty good before you start adding the left into it, I'll see in the next video when we talk about the rest of the left hand. 19. O holy night chorus left hand 2: here here are looking at the courts to the second section of the chorus of O Holy night. We start off with R C court, then to RG court the inversion btg back to the sea court thought this is kind of a new guy . Cease escort. I explain this in the theory section. Look at that. See, she never had this court before. Then we jump down to our different version of the C chord with the G C. And hopefully you remember this from the verse here. We've got RG court here, back up to the original C chord on the B gg after the Sikh or here's our d minor. And there's a second ago you had this before. Back to the C chord G chord on, of course, ending on the secret. Okay, so, you know, this is a longer section. Of course. Make sure your right hands down And of course you're gonna put together has a block just like this. Here we go. Cease us. Look down. That left hand jump down Back on on back to the sea. Okay. You can of course, do this version. Just make sure you jump down here back up e a little extra thing. You could do a role. You could do this kind of role, all sorts of possibilities you could do. You can mix up the roles. Sort of beginning of it roll thing. You do their pension. When you do block roll, you could do ended like this. Just have fun with those courts. Do all kinds of different things with them there. So many possibilities with those chords. Alright, guys, I'm going to show you one more way to play these chords before we end this song. 20. O holy night repeat chords : Okay. One more way to play some of these left hand chords. This is really effective on the course. We've talked about this way. Rolled way more reggio way. But now listen to this. So what am I doing? I'm basically just doing repeat courts. How many repeat chords do we do? We do the number of eighth beats. I'm repeating on the ache. So remember this first part fall on your knees. 1234567894 It etcetera, etcetera. The only problem with this is sometimes you can get really, really tired, especially in the wrist right here doing this. So maybe uses more sparing, especially if you're a newer pianist. Maybe something like this. An alternate role. Arpeggio. I mean, there's so many possibilities, but I just want to throw that out. This is called repeat chords. In some versions, you hear this version? You here together sounds like this. Ah, militaristic beat. That's an option. If you really learn this song, well, but of course. Obviously learned the right hand first the left hand block style and then used these, you know, kind of more fancy, I guess versions of the left hand chords 21. I'm going to play this part three hope. You know, something very obvious. The very 1st 4 measures, The same thing is the next part is just basically the same line twice. Notice the position. I'm in the right hand. I've got one on F to a G three on a four on B flat, five on C. So when you first get your hand up here, make sure the four is on B flat. I'm not too far in. I'm not too far back, either. Okay. What is a little bit difficult is the counting. The first measures. Real easy thing, but this second measure Listen, don't forget, we have a dotted quarter, which is 1.5 counts, followed by eight. So I counted this way one and two and 34 again. One end to end 34 in a fairly easy measure. Comes next. Here's the last measure. One and two and three. Okay, this is actually fairly simple. You know, it's in one hand position. There's not a lot of moving around, and there's just one little syncopated rhythm. Okay, so let you work on this and I'll see you in the next video when we look at the right hand to the chorus. 22. Angels we have heard right hand 2: Okay. We're looking at the right hand to the chorus of angels we have heard on high notice. I'm in a little bit different position. I've got my four on this. See? Way we've run out of fingers, so we have to kind of shift over. So here we go. Shift over to four. Shift over to four again. And then 11 didn't move over. Okay, so it's shift over. Shift over. Then. When we get to this final part of it, you just jump up. Okay? So let me do it again one more time. Just kind of slow shift over to 4/2 4 right here than one goes to see that we just do a pick up and move, and then we go right back to here. Okay? So this is the harder part of the song. Clearly there's more notes. It's longer. And there's more of these shift overs. OK, so I would go ahead and continue to learn this part of the right hand. Hopefully, you've already learned the first part of right hand, and then we're gonna look at the left hand and cords. 23. Angels we have heard left hand 1: okay here are looking at the cords to the first part of the song. So these air the cords that go with the right hand in the first part or the right hand in the verse. However you want to look at it. So I start off on my f major chord, which is M I A and C. Hopefully you've learned this court announced one of the basic courts. It's also discussed in the theory section. Our next chord is this E I could do this one of two ways. I go from here, f a c move the two over Noticed my two's on the A where I could do this F a c move the pinky over. So notice Here's way number one, the two finger over way number two Just move the pinky over. I personally find this a little bit easier, but you may be different than me. Okay, Next court is going to be this e g c. And then it goes back to F major. So here the cords Really slowly at the beginning of this song, The first line of the song F a minor, C major and F major. Okay, I'm gonna play the right hand up here. Go along with it. You're not gonna be able to see much of it. But I just want to show you how this goes together. There's that first partner. We're gonna take the other two bottom fingers up and then a massive leap this to this is what you should practice over and over again. Very bigly thin. Fairly easy to go back to the F major court. And yet another chord B flat B flat. And then e G c. Okay, let me show you that line one more time that I'm gonna show you how it goes with the right here. Here I am, putting it with the right hand way. Have one little issue here way have to move this thumb out of the way to get it to go together. Okay, then. This is the part right after it. The good news is the part that comes right after that you've already done it. Uh, then we've done this, and then at the final part, we end on the F court. Okay, So if I were new to the piano and I we're learning this song, I would do right hand first, learn the entire right hand part, getting to the part point where you don't really have to think about it. Then I would practice all these cores in the left hand, then start putting it together one line at a time. If you're completely new, the piano, if maybe you're kind of intermediate, the piano or maybe even advanced. Maybe you took the end of years and years ago, and you're pretty good. You might be able to put this whole thing together almost automatically. And don't forget to print out the sheet music and review the notes. I have several suggestions in that video. Watch all these videos over and over again. 26. Joy to the world - left hand: guys, here we are on the left hand chords for joy to the world. The good news is, if you've had any of my classes before, particularly might learn piano in 45 days class. You know all of these cords already? We're starting in C major with their C major court 53 and one C, E and G. You should know this one. Well, the next one is the second quarter. We learned that course being D and G were again. We're gonna lose use 53 and one C e g being practice these two. If you're not already familiar, you should be very familiar. And finally, we have our cf 1/4 r f court in its inversion. So here we go. See e g c f a B g g c e g c e g c f a b d c e g b Practicing these courts, you should know these already. And in the next video, we're gonna learn the first part, the right hand and how to make it go with these cords 27. Joy to the world- right hand 1: Okay, guys, we're looking at joy to the world. We're gonna start with the right hand. It's pretty easy and simple to think of your starting on your high c remember this is your middle Seem so you're up on the high seem I just want to play the very first part to just show you how wonderful yet simple this melody is Do you see the pattern? You're just going from high C to the middle seat. You're going straight down. Music that's called going down the scale. So we're going C B A g f B de scene with the very first part. Now the only thing is a little bit tricky is if we just do this, We've run out of fingers. We don't want to do that. Just hop down. That doesn't sound connected. It doesn't sound smooth and flowing. So this is the fingering I use. I use 54321 Then I flip over to three on E to Andi on, then want on? I see. Remember, Say bay A g f e d. Remember, the one will be here. Flip over to three on e and then one on the sea Now, let's put this combined with our left hand notice. I'm on the C major court Aziz you've had before. We're gonna put our hands together real slow one more time. So the court progression the order of the court is just see e g another CNG than a quick CF back to C e g b D j. On then see each. Okay, the hardest part, really, when you put this first section together is just to remember the fingering, remembering the one here, the three here to here and the one here. That's the hardest thing. Okay, I'll see in the next video when we look at the next section up to the second line. 28. Joy to the world - right hand 2: okay here are looking at joy to the world. The second part, This is a part that starts right before measure five. We've just done this part. Now you're going to move upto one on G and continue e notice a pattern after your one own G a a being BC And then right after that there's another seat. So we're just repeating notes. The courts are pretty easy. Cf another cf A than a btg another btg and then e g. So just think we're going up in repeating Goes up repeats because that repeats ends on this . See, I think this is fairly simple section. But now let's look at the next port you're in Measure seven. You've got a four on the high sea and then notice I've got the finger. Five on the next high. See? Why do I do that? Well, here's why I start this on C. I start this on five on C 55432 to 1. To the reason I don't Certainly four is because I'll run out of fingers real quick. So what I'm gonna do is go straight down like this thing, and then I've got Dio one f like I did before in the first part and then two todo quick turnover turnover. Then I go back to five on see on notice. I just do the same thing twice. It's a little bit tricky. Do that quick turnover. That's a little bit tricky, I'll admit to it. But once you get it down is not too bad. This is good song for learning to play scales going down. So adding left hand to it, it's pre Aly really easy, because the good news is it's all the same chord, single secret, and that's all there is to it. So let's reveal us to the first part and then the second part, and then the next video, we'll finish up the easy version of this song. So we're very beginning. Play along with me if you think you're you're fine To do that, I'm gonna take it real slow and just gradually build up speed. This is not a super fast feet piece, but it's not a slow piece either. We're going to go from two that we're gonna put a three on it up to five on C than a three on a thin to on G one own f like we've done before. Three on e four on F free. Teoh, Let's isolate the right hand and really break this down. So we're just that this measure measure 11. Then I'm going to switch to three. Now. You may wonder why. Why don't I just stay on too? Well, honestly, it's just a bit easier if you start on 334543222343 To remember when you started PN and you have that little five finger position. That's a really easy natural position. And whenever you get the chance to go back to that position, by all means use it. Okay, so 333334 Foe for 3222234 Pretty easy. We're staying in this area. 321 number The last four bars. Let me do this in great detail. So we go one on C five on the high sea, make sure your three still on this A a g f flip over to E on three. And then 4321 So this really shows you how to stretch out, stretch out, then go down. Throughout this entire song, you're kind of doing two different things. You're either kind of staying in one position playing like this part, or you're kind of going up and down, like going down at the beginning or in this last four bars going way and then going back down. Let's do that. Last four bars, one on one on middle C five on the high seat, three on a gene F one and then three on E four to F 3 to 2 to one. We end in this nice little five finger position. Okay, Now let's go with the cords with it. Most are pretty easy courts. So we stay on the sea court. I'm gonna go back to the beginning of this section. Measure 12. Just staying on your C chord. Then we switched to this BTG court stays o mat, then seek or jumps up here. We got the f chord cf a back to see court into the f chord than C chord be those last four bars again. Uh, okay, so we've looked at the right hand basics to this entire song. Hopefully you've got these courts down. Continue to practice this easy version, get it faster and faster and faster if you like. You can just play the easy version. There's nothing wrong with that. You could certainly sing along to this. You could certainly play this Carol in front of your family and be great. But the harder version just kind of does some of the same stuff of the ET easy version, but it just adds some nice little effect. So I'm going to show you that in the next few videos a lot of the stuff is the same. The right hand is the same, but the left hand just does some fancy or things, and I'll see you in that video. 30. Joy to the world harder version 1 : Okay, guys, here we're looking at joy to the world, the more difficult version. Hopefully, at this point in time, you've learned the easy version. Definitely learned the easy version first. Now we look at the harder version. Here's the good news. First of all, the right hand, all that's the same. No difference at right hand whatsoever. The left hand in places is the same, but in places it's a little bit difficult. So you're already halfway there. You've learned the right hand, so that's what I'm gonna do. It beginning. That's a little bit more difficult, but I think this sounds majestic. Just listen to this. Doesn't that sound really nice? Uplifting? I think that's a nice effect to do in this song, and that's called a unison scale. It's a scale because you're going straight down your also playing the melody in both hands . So you're playing in left hand, see aging, See, just like in right hand. See, it's unison. You're doing the same notes in both hands. The sea here comes with a B of A's come together, genes come together. You get the idea. But here's what little bit different in the left hand you have to use a little bit different fingering to achieve this. So we're gonna go one, 23 now. Whoa. We're gonna put a one on this G rather than a one on f. Remember when you did the right hand? You put that one on F Not so with the left hand thing is kind of a standardized thing in piano. Whenever you're doing a C scale, you're going down. You want to put the one on the G, then it goes down, down, down. Now you may wonder why. Well, if you do it this way, Way one on f honestly just feels weird. It just doesn't feel natural. So the hard thing when you put this together, learn the left hand first, of course. But when you put together stay, you gotta think left hand turns under 1.5 3 on E and D. That's what you've got to think about different fingering. Um, between the hands. It's gonna be challenging at first, but after that, guess what? Is that the same thing? You just did the exact same thing, and then the next part same right hand, we're gonna do the same affected the beginning. We're gonna have the scale in both hands. You're using the same thing Ring I just told you to do. 11231 on G on Dio. So once you get this basic motion down, you'll take a well, but it's pretty easy. Okay, So work on that part. And in the next video, we're gonna continue with a more difficult version. We're gonna do the ending part from measure 11 to the end. 31. Joy to the world harder version 2 : Okay, guys, here we are, finishing up our joy to the world video Siri's and we're in the more difficult version. The last part. We've just done this part. Now what you're gonna do, right hand all by himself. Okay, Same right hand. But here's what you're going to in the left hand. This is what's called kind of an echo effect. The right hand. Octave, make sure you hold that active left hander they go down together on and then the rest of it is exactly the same as what you learned in the easier version. Do this one more time. Hands together even slower. Uh huh. Why do I do this? Every once was kind of nice to just have one hand by himself than that left hand adding in sounds really majestic here. What really happens is the left hand, I think kind of has an echo effect because you hear this in the left hand echoes it not exactly echoes it, but it echoes it a little bit. That's a nice little effect. And if you've ever been in church and sung this river, her had acquired some sing this before. This is sometimes what is done in this him.
