Learn To Create Seamless Pattern With Chains In Procreate + 5 Free Brushes

1. Introduction & What You’ll Learn: Hey guys, I'm Vinita I'm an illustrator and a pattern designer based in Singapore This class is about seamless patten on your drawing app procreate. I will be showing you how to create these three different seamless patterns The first one is chain with Pearls This is a less complex design You will get a good idea about how the whole seamless technique works And I will show you my tips and tricks on recoloring this pattern The second button is chain with cheetah print. This will give you a good idea about the composition of pattern The third button is chained with wild flowers I will not be going into details about how to draw these flowers, but I will show you how the arranging and composition of these flowers will with the background. Now to create these patterns, I will be using a set of custom made brushes. And I have five free brushes for you in the resource section of this class. So you don't have to wait until you create these brushes. You can download these brushes and start creating your patents. And if you're interested in learning how to create these pressures, I have a class on how to create them. In the end, I have few example patterns for which I will explain you step-by-step process with leaders, how I create them, and how they look on the products of print on demand sites. Thank you for joining this class with me. 2. Canvas & Brush Setup: Let's start with our canvas and brush setup. This is how my gallery looks on procreate. Now create a new canvas. I will tap on the plus sign again on the plus sign. And I will keep my canvas as 4 thousand by 4 thousand pixel and 300 dpi, which is standard for printing and tap on create. Now tap on the gallery to go back. And I will duplicate this canvas two times. Now we need a big canvas to test our repeats So I'm gonna keep my pixel as double the size of our other canvas, which is 8 thousand by 8 thousand pixel. And this will give us very few layers, which is just six layers. So we have to take care, we have to keep in mind while working on this big canvas. Now I'll tab on Gallery to go back. And I will stack all the canvas. I'm just picking up the canvas and dropping on the other canvas to stack. Now let's rename all the canvas. So I'm going to rename this stack as chain pattern. And done tap on the stack. I'll rename the first Canvas as Repeat Pattern As this is our big canvas. The canvas as chain and pull toward one as chain and cheetah. And the last one as chain and wildflowers. Now let's move on to our brushes. I’ll tap on the brush library I will be using these custom brushes of which there are 5 brushes for you in the resource section of this class. You can download them. So you can just download and start creating your patterns I will show you how these brushes looks like. This is just a stamp for a cheetah print that we are going to use in one of the pattern I will show you how the other brushes looks like. Now to learn how to create these brushes and make your own custom brushes. You can refer to one of my class when I'm showing you step-by-step how to create them. Let's move on to creating our first Pattern 3. Explaining The Spliting Process: Now the first step is I'm going to show you how the whole seamless technique works. First, I will switch on my drawing guide. I'll go to action Canvas drawing guide and edit drawing guide. Now because my background is dark, I need mine guidelines to be of a lighter color. You can adjust your color here and thickness here. Now for the grid size, it should be around 1000 And now on my first layer, I'm going to draw a line with my braid shape brush. Now when you're drawing a line, you draw the line and hold it until it goes straight. Next, I will add a new layer and fill this layer with any color. And I will reduce the opacity to around 30%. So I can see my illustration And the layer, both Now select both the layer and group it, not duplicate this group Swipe left and duplicate. Now I'll hide the lower group. Now you select one of the group and make sure under snapping, your snapping and magnetic is on and your distance is around 20 to 21. In my experience, if the distance is lower or higher than this, seamless doesn't align correctly. Now I'm going to move this group until the half of our canvas. Unhide the other group and pull it down until it reaches half. Now if you see in the center, there's no gap. That means it is aligned perfectly. Now I'm going to open the group and delete both color fill layers. Select both of my illustration layer, Pull it up and delete, both the new group layer Next, merge both of our illustration layer and add a new layer and with the same brush. Now this is the tricky part because when you are drawing the line, you have to be careful that this point starts and ends correctly. Draw a line and hold it until it gets straight and don't leave it until you're satisfied. Keep moving it and adjusting until you feel it looks aligned properly. You have to practice this a few times until you get the hang of it. I'm selecting the layer and I'm going to adjust the tiny gap I can see. So I'm just going to tap on the canvas. And that looks okay. Next I'm going to merge both the layers. And I'm going to add a new layer and show you how if I'm just drawing a line, I'll compare both of these lines and show you how the seamless works So I'm going to take both of these layers and drop it into a bigger canvas. I'm going to tap on Gallery and drop it into our 8 thousand by 8 thousand pixel canvas. Now first I'm going to select my first layer. For one, we did the whole seamless process. I'm going to duplicate it and pull it down. Next, I'm going to select my second layer. And I'm going to duplicate this and pull it down and check if the seamless works. This is the first one. And this is the second one. If you see there's a tiny gap and it is not aligning. So we are going to use this whole process for every element that we are going to split in the whole pattern. You'll get a better idea about this while I'm showing you the whole pattern. And I will also show you my tips and tricks on how to make this quicker and easier. 4. Pattern: Chains & Pearls: Let's start with our first pattern On my first layer. I'm going to go to my brush Library and select my first brush that's curbed chain. And I will select one of the gold color, yellow, orangeish. Using my guideline, I'm going to draw a vertical line. Draw a line and hold your pen to the screen until it goes straight. Now my next step is to split this chain into half. For that, I'm going to add a new layer, fill this with any color, and reduce the opacity. So you can see our illustration and the fill layer, both Next, select both the layers and group them and duplicate the group. Next, hide one of the group. I'm going to hide the lower group. Select one of the group and slide it vertical on the top. Unhide the next group and slide it down until it snaps in the center. Make sure before splitting, your magnetic and snapping is on and your distance is around 21. Now I'm going to delete both of my yellow filled layers and select both of my illustration layer, pull it up. So I can delete this new group layer which we don't need. Next, merge both of our chain layers, add new layer. Now with the same chain brush, I'm going to fill this gap between these chains. Now sure the tricky part is when you start and end, the chains need to connect and aligned with each other. You have to practice this a few times to understand how this brush works You can also select this layer and select Freeform to adjust if there's a gap or it is not aligned. Next, Merge both the layers. And duplicate this layer. Now select one of the layer and rotate it. And I'm going to adjust this using the guidelines. Make sure when you're adjusting this there is no gap on the sides. So this way you save time because you don't have to do the whole seamless process on this again So next I'm going to show you how you can use multiple chain and make them seamless at once. Add a new layer, and select one of the chain. And I'm going to draw a line, hold it until it goes straight. Next, again, add another new layer. Draw a line. Hold it. Next again, add a new layer, draw a line and hold it. Next I'm going to add a new layer and fill it with any color, reduce the opacity of this layer. And next I'm going to select all the three chain layer and the fill layer and group them. Now duplicate the group Hide one of the group, slide it up, and hide the second group, and slide it down. Next, open the groups and delete both the fill layer. Select all the illustration layer, and pull them out of the group. And now I'm going to delete this new group layers. Next I'm going to merge the layers with the same chains. Like I'm going to merge the layer five. Next I am going to merge both Layer three. Keep them together and merge. And both layer for now to check if you are the correct ones, you can hide, unhide, and check if they are on the same layer. Now I'm going to add a new layer for each chain to connect the gap between them and going to hide the horizontal chain. So I can see the ends clearly. Once you're done filling the gap, merge the layers. So one chain is on one layer. Now I'm going to select all the three chains that we just made, group it and duplicate the group and rotate this. Next I'm going to take them out of the group. Add new layer and under brush library. And we're going to select my brush that's braid And select an off-white color. Draw a line. Hold it. And now I'm going to split this with the same process, duplicate this layer, and rotate it Next I'm going to add few more of these chains and I'm going to fast forward. Once it is all done, you have to select all the layers and group them. Now, duplicate this group. So we have our originals, open the first group and merge all the layers. Now pick up this merge layer. Tap on gallery, tap on our repeat pattern canvas, and drop it here. I'm going to change my background to a darker color Next, select this layer. Slide it on one corner of this canvas. Duplicate this layer select it and slide to the other side. Now let's check if there is any gap or mistake. It's aligning perfectly. And I'm going to merge this two layer and duplicate the layer and slide it down. Check again if there is any gap. Now to check, go to layers, hide and unhide. So you can see where they are aligning with. The other layer is. And we are done with our first pattern. Now let's check how you can recolor this pattern Merge the layers and duplicate this layer. So we don't touch our original pattern Hide the first pattern And I'm gonna go to adjustment, Gradient Map and layers. And you will see a lot of options here. I'm gonna go for a basic gradient, with two Colors. Tap on this tab. And you will see these two colors. You can tap on this tiny squares and you can change the color So if you see the one which is white, is white and the other color is changing and tap done when you're done. Next, I want to see how it looks when you change the background. And I'm going to change the background. And this is how you can recolor your whole pattern, on few products of print on demand sites Now let's move on to our next pattern. 5. Pattern: Chain & Cheetah Print: Let's start with our second pattern, which is chains with cheetah print. I'm going to tap on my third canvas. And the first step is to switch on our drawing guide. For that, I'll go to action, canvas, drawing guide and edit drawing guide. I want my grid size to be around 1000 pixel. You can adjust by sliding this blue dot or you can tap on this and type in 1000 and done underbrush library. Under the calligraphy. I have this customized Monoline brush, which I have customized by going to Properties and maximizing the size. This will make the brush thicker then the default brush and tap done, select a brown color, a dark brown color. And I'm going to draw two curvy lines. These are the leather tabs between the chains. Now to add details on these, leather tabs, I'm going to alpha lock this layer. Dap on brush library, under Airbrushing. I'll select soft brush, and I will select lighter color of the same shade I will be adding few details and highlights, but you can give more details by adding the stitch on the sides or giving it a leather texture effect on the top Next, I will add a new layer to add few nails on the top, I’ll go to brushes. Again, select my monoline brush, select gold color. And I will just add a few dots on the top. Again, I'm going to keep the nails very basic, but you can add more details to make it look realistic. Next, I'm going to add a new layer to add chains to these dab, pull this layer below the layer. And go to brush library. Select one of the brush. I'm gonna take the first brush, that's curb chain. And I will draw chains connecting these dabs I will be adding tassels to the ends of these chains. For that i’ll go to brushes, select Monoline brush, adds a new layer on top of this chain layer And I will draw rings on both the ends. Next, duplicate this string. And you can place it under the other end. Merge both the ring and chain layer, add a new layer for the tassels Now for the tassels I will take my Rope brush and start drawing the tassel around the ring. Now you can keep all of these and make a copy of it before you merge them. But for this class I'm going to merge it now. Now I want to make a similar string with a different shape. So I'm going to edit this. I will duplicate this string layer, hide my previous string. And we change the shape of this chain string. First I will select this layer and select freehand. And I will select half of this string, swipe down with three fingers and you'll get this option where you can tab. This will take the selected bought on a differently. They bought on a different layer. I'm going to hide one of the bond. And I'm going to work on the spot. I'm going to disease allele from this side. And I am going to add a ring to the end. Next, I will unhide the are the bond and I will drop the basketball. I'll do that by selecting with free hand and select the bond you need. Swipe the three finger dab gotten based, and that will take it to a new layer. I will delete the layer that I don't need, and I will adjust this bond to the ring. Next module delayers. Now we have two elements for this baton. Now to add another element, I'm going to add a new layer. I'm going to select runoff my chain brush. Makes sure while you selecting any brush, it shouldn't have any open ends because we will be filling the shapes and it shouldn't be open. For example, for this chain, there are few open ends. So when I'm filling this, this will fill the whole layer. I'm selecting another brush with no openings, and I'm gonna draw a curvy shape. Next again, add a new layer, height this layered and add a new layer. And again draw another curvy shape. Now we have four layers with different elements on them. Now will start splitting and arranging these elements. I'll hide all the elements and just keep my first one. Add a new layer, fill it with any color, reduced opacity. Select both the layer and group them. Now duplicate this group, hide one of the group. And we will slide the other group. Make sure under snapping your magnetic and snapping is on and your distances around 20 - 21. Now i will slide this on the side. It doesn't have to be exactly half of the canvas. You can arrange it depending on your pattern Next, unhide the other group and slide it to the left until it snaps. Now delete both the yellow filled layers, select the illustration layers and pull them up out of the group and delete the new group layers. Merge the illustration layer so they are on the same layer. Next, I will split the second element with the same process. Now, I will unhide my first element and see how they look together on the canvas I feel that tassels are coming in the same area. I want the tassels to be scattered around. So you have to adjust and see where you want them. Like, I'm going to flip this layer. I'm going to select this layer and flip it Vertical Now they look more scattered. Make sure when you're adjusting these elements they are not going out of the canvas. Now, I'll unhide my third element. Before you split, you have to check where you want this element to be placed. According to that, you have to split in that ratio. Now I'm going to split this element with the same process vertically Next repeating the same process for the forth element. Our next step of adding the animal. First, I will select all the layers and group them and duplicate the group. Because if later if something goes wrong, we have our original elements there I will merge all the layers of our first group. Pull the merge layer out of the group and delete the new group. Now add a new layer, tap on merged illustration layer and dap on reference. This helps in filling the color between the shapes. Now I'll go to my new layer, select black color. Now before filling this color, you have to make sure your filling the other side of the shape do. You will get a good idea about this only when you practice this a few times. I'm randomly filling few area with black color. Now to add another color, I'm going to add a new layer, which is for off-white I'm going to select an off-white color. And this off-white is where we're going to place our prints too it's going to be on top of this area. So it should be in a place where the idea is not splitting. I need to add more black color. So I'm gonna go back to my layer and add in few ideas. Now let's add the cheetah print. I'm going to add a new layer and that bond clipping mask, the clipping mask should be on top of the off-white color Layer I'm going to select a brown color, dark brown color. And select my cheetah stamp And I'm just going to add stamp wherever I see the off-white ideas. Next, duplicate this stamp layer select the lower layer and alpha lock it Next, select a pale yellow color. And tap fill layer Select the layer and just shift it a little on the side. I feel there's a lot of negative space on the upper side of this pattern. So I'm gonna add an element on the top. I'll add a new layer on top of our pattern layer. I'm gonna select my chain brush. That's the curb chain. Select a gold color. And I'm just going to draw a curvy line. Next, I'm going to add rings to the ends of this chain. I'm going to add the ring with my monoline brush, duplicate this layer and place it on the other side. Now to erase the extra chain I can see through the rings. And I'm gonna go to my chain layer. And erase the extras. Next merge, this chain layer with this pattern layer too And we are done with that pattern I'll select all the layers, group it so we have an extra original, duplicate it and now merge all the layers of the first group. Now let's test the repeat on the big canvas. I'll go to my repeat pattern Canvas. Slide this layer on one corner of the canvas. Make sure your magnetic and snapping is on. Duplicate this layer. Slide it on the right side. Merge both the layers. Duplicate again, and slide it down. Check if there is any gap or it is aligned properly. Merge both the layers And you can check this with different backgrounds. So we're done with our pattern. And this is how it looks on print on demand sides products. 6. Pattern: Chains & Wild Flowers: Let's start with our third pattern, that's chain with wildflowers. I'll go to my third canvas and switch on my drawing guide for that I’ll go to action, canvas, drawing guide and edit drawing guide and under symmetry, tap on option. And select quadrant and tap done. Next, I'll go to brush Library and select one of my chain brush, that's Cable chain. And select a yellow gold color. And I will start drawing from the center line, draw a line, hold it until it goes straight. And next a vertical line. Try to match and align the chain near the ends. Next, I'll add a new layer back on the layer and tap on drawing assist. Select a different chain brush. You can select any chain of your choice. Reduce the size. And I'm going to add another border I'll draw the line and hold it. Draw a vertical line, hold again and try to match. Add another new layer. And I'm going to select another chain, brush. The first one that curb chain. I'm gonna go back to my layers and put on my new layer below the second bodes layer. And I will start join curvy lines diagonally. Next I will duplicate this layer. Select. Make sure under snapping your magnetic and snapping is on and rotate it. I go to eraser, select Monoline, and I'm going to erase the extra near the borders. Next I will duplicate all the layers. Select all the layers and group them and duplicate so we don't lose our original illustration layers. Next open the fourth group, merge all the layers, take the layer out of the group & delete New Group. Tap on the layer, tap drawing assist because we don't need it. And tap reference. Next, add a new layer. And i'm going to select a light blue color. Switching on reference will fill the shape where you drop the color. I'm dropping these colors randomly. There's no particular order that I'm following. For another color. I'm going to add a new layer. Select a dark brown color. And again, I'm going to start filling randomly. For the next step, I am importing few wild flowers to this canvas & start arranging them Once you're happy with the composition, Go back to the gallery and duplicate this Canvas. So we have an original copy. Before we merge all the layers, I'm gonna rename one of the layer as editing. At the end, I'm gonna go to my editing canvas and tap on Layer Merge all the wildflower layers, merge both the fill layers. So now we're left with three Layers, Group All the three layers, we’ll take this our big canvas to turn it into a Seamless Pattern Sometimes when you import the layers might not be in the same order. So you have to fix that. Again, group all the three layers, select it, and slide it to one of the corner Duplicate the group And I'm gonna change my background to a little off-white Select one of the group and slide it. Flip it horizontally. Next, open both the groups. Select all the layers and take them out of the group. Delete the new group layers. And I'm going to merge them again into three layers. I am going to merge both the backgrounds. Both the flower layers & both the fill layers Again, select all the three layers, Group them, and duplicate the group. Select one of the group and slide it down. Now flip this vertically Next again, I'm going to merge them into three layers. And we're going to merge all the flower layers and the background and the fill layers. I'm doing this because while I am doing this pattern, I don't want the color of the flowers or the color of the background to change. I want to recolor them separately. Now to recolor this pattern, I'm going to duplicate my colour fill layers Go to adjustments. Tap on hue, saturation and brightness. Tap on layer. I will start by adjusting the Hue. You can see the color changing while you're sliding this dot. Next under saturation, you can control the colored red, like the contrast in the all colors. Next, under brightness, you can make it darker or lighter. And this is how i recolor my pattern You can use these types of patterns on home decor products or scarves. And this is how the print is looking on print on demand sites, products. 7. Example Pattern: This is one of the example pattern, I want to show you. I have all my elements ready. I'm going to start splitting each element. I'll be using the same process I showed in the class. I will work on one element at a time, because this makes it easy to build up the composition. Once you're done splitting and if you're not happy Again splitted in any other ratio you need. For the first time I split it vertically Now I'm spitting into horizontally. And I'm done with my pattern Make sure you duplicate the canvas before merging all the layers. Merge all the layers. And take this to the bigger canvas to test your repeats Slide the layer to one corner. Duplicate the layer. Slide it to the other corner. Merge both the layers, duplicate and slide down. You can try this on few different background colors. And we are done with this pattern 8. More Examples: Here are more examples which will give you a good idea about how to create dense looking patterns. These are all already created patterns. I'm going to open and unhide each layer to show you how I split each element. I hope this helps you with a lot of tips on how to create the seamless patterns This is how it looks on the products. This pattern is simple, chain and ropes. Now let's move on to our class project. 9. Project & Resources: This class is all about seamless pattern With Chain brush on your drawing app procreate. Now for your class project, you can choose any motive of your choice. But to make it easier, I have free brushes in the resource section of this class. You can use these brushes and start your practice and your project right away. You don't have to wait until you create these brushes. Now to download these brushes, you have to be on your web page. And under project and resource section, you have to tap on the attachment that say, Chain Pattern brush, and tap on download. Once the download is done, tap on open and procreate. This will import the brush folder in the brush library. Tap on any Canvas tap on your brush library, and you can see your brushes on the top.
