1. Introduction & What You’ll Learn: Hi, I'm Vinita I'm an illustrator and a pattern designer and based in Singapore This classes about six chain shapped brushes in Procreate In this class you will learn how to draw these shapes and turn them into six beautiful chain shaped brushes I will walk you through each setting we need, to create these brushes and show you how you can turn this into a print and recolor it You can use this in your print on demand sites And as I am a fashion student, I love to see these prints on my Croquis You can use this for your fashion projects or your jewellry design projects Now for the class project, you can create the same brushes shown in this class or customize and make your own new brushes You can use these brushes for your lettering, surface design, greeting postcards, or art prints Please post your project in the project section of this class. 2. Canvas & Brush Setup: Let's start with our canvas and brush setup This is how my homepage looks To create a new canvas, I'm going to tap on the plus sign Again, tap on the plus sign I'm gonna keep my canvas as 3 thousand by 3 thousand pixiel and with 300 dpi and tap on create Next I'm going to rename our canvas I'll tap on Gallery And I'm gonna rename this as chain brushes And done next up on the canvas And let's move on to our brush setup Tap on brush library Tap on the plus sign And we're going to create a new folder for our chain brushes I'm going to use the chain shape emoji to rename this folder and rename this as chain And done. Next, I'm going to tap on our calligraphy folder and duplicate our Monoline brush Pick this Monoline brush and drop it into our chain folder Next, I'm going to duplicate this brush six times For are each chain brush Now I want one of my Monoline brush to be customized So I'll tap on my brush, go to Properties and maximize the size, and tap on Done I did this change to the Brush size because our default monoline brush, even to the maximum size is very small Now if you try this brush, this will give you a nice thick stroke with crisp lines, which I need for drawing our chain brushes Now let's move on to creating our first chain brush
3. Cable Chain Brush: Let's start with our first chain brush. The first step will be to add drawing guide to this canvas. For that, I'm going to tap on Action, Canvas, drawing guide and edit drawing guide. Now under 2D grid, the grid size needs to be max. And that been done. Now I need my edited Monoline brush for that I'll go dude brush, light duty, dab on the first brush. Select the black color. And I will start drawing an oval. Once you're done drawing the old hold it and you get this option called Edit Shape, dap on that. And you'll get these four nodes. You can hold this nodes and you can move it around the shape. I will place this shape in the center of our horizontal guideline. Add a new layer for another oval. And I will draw an always overlapping the first one. Again with the help of these nodes. I'm going to place this on our guideline. I'm holding the lower node and pulling it up to make this a little more flat. Now going back to the layers and I'm going to decrease the opacity Leo's allowing 50% This will help me see the overlapping of these rings. Next, I will tap on the layers and select my monoline brush And I will erase the overlapping of the second layer. And then now our next step is to bring the opacity to normal. That's a 100% for both the layers. Now my next step is to add highlights. Do these rings. It can be done in two ways. Either you can add clipping mask or you can alpha lock these layers. I'm going to alpha lock these layers. So tap on the layer, Tap on alpha lock Do this for both the layers. Now under the Brush Library, under airbrushing section, I'm selecting soft brush and select white color. With the smaller brush size. Select our first layer And I will add few strokes in the center of these rings. For these highlights, you can also refer to a reference image to know how the light is falling on these rings. Now select the second layer. And again, I'm going to add in the center. Okay, now my next step is to export this as an image. I'm go to action, share JPEG and Save Image. Next school do layers, hide both of these leaders and group them. I'll add a new layer. Go to my brushes. Goto chain folder. I'll select the second one. Next step, ONE shape. It. Import and import the photo and import your illustration here. Dab with two fingers on this image that we inward the image and done. Next step on properties. Maximize the size. Tap one, shape, rotation to a 100%. Next tap on stroke path and spacing around 50%. And done. I will reduce the size and select a golden yellow color. And let's try this on the canvas. Now to rename this brush, I'll go back to the brush, Tab on the brush. Go to about this brush. And on the top you can edit the name here. I will name this chain as chain one. And then now I want to show you the comparison between the same brush, one with the highlights and one without the highlight. The first one is without highlights, which is opaque And if you change the color of the background, you can see the second one will have the background showing on the top. So now you can decide if you want your brush to be opaque like the first one, or you're okay with the transparency of the highlights. Let's move to our second brush.
4. Curb Chain Brush: Let's start with our second brush. My first step will be to import a reference image. You could do action, ADD, insert a photo, insert a private photo, and import your reference image. This image is to understand that repeat, we need to create this brush. I'm going to zoom this image and try to fit it on my screen. I need only one ring to be visible on the screen. So I'm trying to day. And next I'm going to add a new layer. Select the mono London brush. And I will start drawing the forced go from the top. I will select it, that one wrap and adjusts the shape. Next i equal two layers. Duplicate this layer. Uniform select, flip vertical and flip horizontally. Now pull it to the other side. Makes CO2 layers and hide our reference image layer. Now my next step is to alpha log both our illustration layer. Open the group, tap on the layer, gap one alpha lock. You have to do this for both the layers. Next to highlight, I will do my brush library, a brushing and select myself, brush, select white collar. And I will add little highlights on this illustration. I need this illustration more undergo view side. So I'm going to adjust this by selecting three form under selection. And try to fit this on our Canvas. Also make sure your background is wide and your illustration as black. Only then you will get a good result of this gene brush. Okay, so now to export this will go to action Shea and Save Image. Next adenine layer and hide the illustration layers. Go to brush library dab on second duplicate mono Lynn we created. Next go to shape, edit, import, import a photo. And we import our illustration that Purdue fingers on this image that we inward the image and done. Next go to Properties. Maximize the size, shape, rotation to a 100% dacron stroke, but and spacing around 50%. Now to rename this brush would do about this brush. And you can rename, heal. I will rename this brush as chained to and done. Now lets try this on the canvas. I'll select a yellow, golden color. And that's how the brush looks. You can use this brush in so many ways. I can show you few by the end of this class. And let's move on to our next brush.
5. Ball / Bead Chain Brush: Let's start with our third brush Go to layers Add a new layer, select our Monoline brush And we’ll draw a circle, hold it, edit shape and circle Now move this to the left corner of the canvas. You can use the guidelines to get the center and fit that to the screen and fill this with the black color Next add a new layer For this layer, we need our drawing guide So we'll go to action. Can this drawing guide and edit drawing guide tap on symmetry option. Horizontally and done. I'll add a loop in the center, holds it to get a smoother curve. And adding a tiny line on this loop. Next go to layers and alpha lock are circle layer Go to airbrushing, soft brush, white color And we'll add highlight to the circle Now to export this will go to action, share, JPEG and save image. Now, go to Layers. Group both our illustration layer and add a new layer. Now go do brush library, Tap on our third duplicate Monoline, shape. And import. Import a photo. And import our illustration. Tap with two finger on this image that will invert the image and done. Next step on properties, maximize the size. Tap on shape and rotation to a 100%, tap on stroke path spacing to around 50% or until you're satisfied. Now to rename this brush. Go to about this brush. And you can rename here I will rename this brush as chain three. And now let's try this brush on the canvas. A yellow golden color. And that's how the brush looks. Let's move to our next brush
6. Round Link Chain Brush: Let's start with our forth chain brush. Our first step is to go to brush library. Select our Monoline brush. And I will start drawing a circle, draw a circle. Hold it, Edit Shape and circle, tap and select. Under selection makes sure your snapping and magnetic is on. This helps you with the guidelines while you're moving your illustration. Next, go-to layers and add a new layer and draw a simple straight line in the center of the circle. Next group bought the illustration layer, selected and fit that to the screen. Now for this chain, you can add highlights like we did for the other brushes. Or you can also keep it simple. I'm going to keep it as it is. Now to export, go to action, share Japan and save image. Next, hide this illustration and add a new layer. Go to brush library and tap on our fourth, duplicate Monoline, tap on shape. Edit Import, import a photo. And import our illustration not adapted to finger on this image that will invert this image. And then now dab on properties. Maximize the size, shape. Rotation to a 100%. Backbones to bud and spacing around 50% or until you're satisfied. Now to rename this brush, dab on about this brush. And you can edit your name here. I will indeed named this brush as chain for. And then lets try this on the canvas. I'm going to select a yellow, golden color. Reduce the size of the brush. And that's how the graph looks. Now let's move on to our next brush.
7. Round Decorative Chain Brush: Let's start with our fifth chain brush. Our first step is to add a new layer. And i'm going to select one of the brush that we already created before. That's chain brush three, that looks like Pearl And I'm going to draw a circle. Don't leave your Apple Pencil from the screen That will turn this into a perfect circle. Hold it until it is a perfect circle Next, fit this to the screen. Go do layers and duplicate this layer. Now select the duplicate layer and make it smaller. And now we will export this and turn it into a brush for that go-to action. Share and save image. Next go to Layers. Group these two layers and hide this illustration and add a new layer. Now will go to library to our fifth duplicate Monoline , go to shape. Edit Import. Import a photo Import our illustration. Now tap with two finger on this image that will invert the image and tap done. Next go to Properties. Maximize the size. Shape. Rotation to a 100%. Tap on Stroke path, spacing to around 50%. Or when your satisfied, to rename, tap on About this brush and you can edit the name. I'll rename this as chain five. Now let's try this on the canvas. I will select a yellowish color. We’ll decrease the size of the brush. And that's how the brush looks. Now let's move on to our sixth brush.
8. Belcher Chain Brush: Let's start with our sixth chain shaped brush. Now my first step is to add a new layer, select my monoline brush. And I will start by drawing a straight line. Hold it. Duplicate this layer. Pull it below the first layer Next, add a new layer again. With the same brush. I will add a curv on the side, hold it for a smooth curve. Next, duplicate this curve layer Select, and flip it horizontally. Again, add a new layer. And i'm going to add a line in the center of this rectangular shape. Now group all the five layers. And I'm going to fit this to the screen. Next, I'm going to merge the four layers of this rectangle and tap on the layer and alpha lock it Now go to brushes, airbrushing and soft brush. Select a white color And I'm going to add highlight to this shape. You can refer to a reference image to have an idea about how the light is falling. And that will give it a more realistic look to your brush. Now I will alpha lock my second layer, and I add a stroke in the center. Now let's export this. Go to action, share, JPEG and save image. Go to Layers, hide this illustration and add a new layer. Next step on brushes, Go to our chain folder. And I'm going to tap on my last duplicate Monoline Now tap on shape, edit, import And import a photo, import our illustration here, now tap with two fingers on this image that we invert the image and done. Next tap on properties. Maximize the size. Tap on shape, rotation to a 100%, Tap on Stroke Path and spacing to around 50%. Or when your satisfied. I'm going to try this on the drawing pad. I will go back to Drawing pad, clear drawing pad and increase the size. I think we need to increase the spacing a little bit. Yeah, that looks good. Now to rename tap on about this brush. And you can rename here I will rename this brush as chain six. And done. I'm going to select a yellow golden color to try this brush on the canvas. That's how the brush looks. Now we're done with all the six brushes Now let's move on and make a pattern with them.
9. Tips & Ways You Can Use These Brushes: Let's start with our chain pattern I'm gonna go to my color library and pick up the color theme with blues and browns Tried to pick up a color team with yellow, golden color. That gives a beautiful effect to this chain brush. Next I'm going to my chain Library. And I'm gonna select our first brush. And I'm just going to draw random stroke all over the canvas. I'm doing this only for the demo purpose, just to show how you can use these brushes. If you're doing it in a professional way, you have to go on a bigger canvas like 8 thousand by 8 thousand pixel. And I'm using the same brush with different sizes and different colors too. And we are done with our pattern Now I go to duplicate this layer, the layer, and I'm quote one of my fashion on this canvas. As a fashion student I love to put things on croquis I have my croqui on two layers. One is with the head and one is with the body. So I'm going to select one of my pattern And pull it between both the layers, makes them going to select my pattern layer And I'm going to adjust that to the body of the croqui So it fits well on the body. Tap on layer, tap on clipping mask. Now to adjust the color of my pattern layer, I'll go to adjustments, curves, layers. Now, on this first option, I can adjust my colors As It was not that clearly visible. And that's how my croqui looks. Now next I'm going to show another way you can use these brushes. I'm gonna put a bunch of different sizes of these chains with different length on this croqui So this is one of the way you can use this brushes Now next, let's recolor this pattern and we're gonna change the background, do black first, and go to my layers. I'm going to duplicate this layer so we don't lose our original layer. Next I'm going to alpha lock this Duplicate Layer. Select a yellowish gold color Go to my Layers, tap on the layer, tap fill layer. So now you have a whole pattern with black and gold combination.
