1. 1 Introduction: Hi, my name is Molly, and thank you for joining
this learning session. I'm going to show you how to use Procreate and how to
be an illustrator. Just landing on
application on your iPad. While learning
Procreate, I'm going to show you how to use layers to make amazing illustrations and how to create your
own color palette, which is very important. Also, I'm going to
show you how to use brushes and how to
make your own brush, which is another very good
things to do in Procreate. Procreate is such an amazing application
for illustrators. You can also make
your own animation, which we can talk
later about this one. Thanks for joining
me on this journey. And let's create.
2. Introduction to Procreate and hardware you need to work with: Alright, let's see what we need to start working with Procreate. Procreate is an application
which works on iOS, which means you need an iPad. And you need to go to
uplift store and find, Procreate and protects the
software for this application. It's not very
expensive and you only pay once and you would get all the updates for
free event I like application updates
and recently it actually has added
some 3D features, which is pretty cool. So you need to go to
Apple store and find, Procreate and purchase
these application. Once you buy this, it would be on your
account forever. The other thing you
would need to create and draw on your iPad is a pen. You can of course
use your fingers. But having depend makes such a big difference because I pulled
from film is quiet, sensitive to pressures
and the angles you use depend with highly recommend to use an EpiPen because it
makes such a big difference.
3. Creat Canvas: To work with Procreate, you need to create a canvas. If you click on the
plus at the top right, you can choose, choose
just say, standard Canvas. Or you can make your own size. To create your own Canvas, just click on the black
folder under the plus. And then you can
customize your Canvas. You can choose the
size of your canvas. First, second options. And the third option, DPI, is the resolution
of your Canvas. You can also change, like your color profile and
your time-lapse settings. The other thing you
can control here is the background of your Canvas. You can touch the color here
or use the default one. And I would recommend to use the transparent one if
you are creating PNG, I'm myself, overs go to
transparent and venue drawing. You can add color
in the transparent. Anyway. Let's create a canvas
and start drawing.
4. Explore Procreate Gallery: The other thing I would
like to show you here in procreate is in the gallery. Once you create a canvas, it's very handy to know these
tapes because sometimes you just go with the default one
that you like on the canvas. If you slide to the left, as you can see, you've, we'd have some more options like deleting the canvas
or duplicating. Duplicating is so helpful
because you can just create your own Canvas and every
time you can duplicate and it actually duplicates
the whole settings for you. So you will have like the layers you have if you
use any default layers. And you can just keep
working and adding stuff on your previous canvas just by sliding to live and use
the duplicate here. The other thing is very important in gallery,
at least for me, is to, to organize
your Canvas here. You can manage these Canvas together and have
them as a stack. Or you can just rename them and have them organized for you. To rename them. You just click on that one. I'm not using Apple Pencil. I just click and hold
the bit on the name and it gives me the option
to rename the Canvas. And in that way, you can have
your canvases tidy here.
5. Explore Procreate Environment: So let's get creative
and start throwing. When you create your canvas. Then you open your
Canvas and you will have the environment
of Procreate. At the top right, you can see a menu that the first thing that
the lift, your brushes, you can have unused many
brushes that Procreate has all your can just download your own brush or
make your own brush. So the other option is
the next one is a smudge, and the next one is a rice. They all using the
same brush gallery and you can change them and have different effects on them. The next one is layers that you can see which is
very important in Procreate to have
different layers and later we get into them. The first one at the top, which is the last
one on the left, is all color palette. This is all you need to paint and draw and choose
your colors here. If you're looking at the
left side of your Canvas, you can see two bars here. The top one is to change
the size of your brush, and the bottom one is to change the opacity of your brush. It's very important,
especially the downwind to create effects in
different capacity. The middle one you can see east to choose color of your Canvas. So when you activate it, you can just go
through your color on your drawing and then you
stop it. Choose the color. The two bottom one, which I personally use a
lot are redo and undo. It. Just undo what you do or you
just redo what you've done. Let's go to the top-left. The first one is Gallery. Gallery is the place
Vivre impervious session. And if you click on the gallery, first thing to know is it
auto save all you've done and drawing that you don't lose your data and it takes you to the list of the canvas you have. The second option is action, and it has like run. It's got six minue that
does different things. The first one, you
can add photos on your canvas or tacky picture and insert it on your Canvas. The second one is the
canvas size and settings. And the third one is sharing your art journal peck format, which is a picture or
even video or animation. The fourth font is the video. And that actually is your
time-lapse of drawing. You can play it, you can disable it, or you can export it. You have the preferences and
help option here as well. So the next one in the
menu is adjustment. And you can adjust the color, the saturation of your drawing, and many more things
that we are going to go to the details later. The fourth one is to
select your image. You can use
automatically to just select based on colors or
you can do with your hand. When you do this, the next option is to
release sizing or changing the shape of your selected
area in your drawing.
6. Brush, Paint, Smudge and Erase: In this part I'm going
to show you how to use brush paint smart and
erase option here. In Procreate. If you go to the brushes
in the brush library, you can see so many brushes with different texture,
different feelings here. I would recommend to
use different brush to see how it feels
and how it looks. It's very important. Some brushes, It's
good for a sketching. Some brushes are
good for coloring. Some are very amazing
effects on your painting. There are so many
brushes to explore. So with highly recommend
to test or not, if not all the brushes, but at least half of them, because it's very important
to note that different brush. The other option in
Procreate is a smudge. It's very interesting because
both smart and erasing has got the same brushes using
the same brushes library, procreate has drawn
some lines here. Let me just go to the brush
and choosing different brush. If you just throw
some line here, it already shows how different these lines are just
by changing the, changing the type of brush here. Then if figure too smart
and see for example, arm using this brush. And then I'm using
the other brush. And you can see how different these effects are just by using different
brushes and smudging. It's the same in
erasing as well. So if thicker and click
twice on the eraser, it gives us the
option of choosing different brush even
for erasing the lines. For example, if figure this one, and here we can
change the opacity of the under size of
the brush as well. I choose this brush and then
having the size of these and the opacity is the highest
and you can see it completely erase the
whole thing here. But if we change
the opacity here, it just like remove
partly of the paint. And if we change the brush here, it changed the way eat, wipe some of the paint. Your canvas. You can see already just by using your eraser
on your painting, you can make texture
in your painting, which is very important in Procreate and makes such
a big difference here. The next one is
our color palette. Let's go to the next
session and I'll show you how to use your
own palette here.
7. Customise your colour palette: Here in Procreate, go to the palate and V have
five options here. The left one is the disk
and it's just simply, you can go around the circle
and change the color. You'd like to have. The from the small
circle inside you can set the saturation and
brightness of your color. And that's one of the YT
choose color in Procreate. The bar behind the circle
is your history and the Rainbow one that I have
are called the trim mode is my default palette. You can change your
default palette later. The next step is classic, and it's basically you can
change the color you have using three bars here that shows the saturation and the
brightness of your color. Again, you have the history and your default palette here. Harmony, you can play
with harmony and it suggests you the colors
in the same harmony. Or if you want just
particular color, you can just put the value of the color in this step
in the value tab, and you would be able to get
the exact color you want. But the first tab, which is pallor, is the
most tab I use Always. It's because you can
create your own palette. And especially if
you are, a graph is, or you like to just use
certain color palette, that's the best way to do. You can also use the default
font that Procreate has, but you can make your
own color by pressing the plus here and
create a new palette. But as you can see,
you can insert, call it palette from a
photo or even you can use your camera and take
your photo and Procreate, create a palette for you. Or even like from a file if there is a pallet
you'll want to import, you can just import
it from a five. Here we just create a new
palette and it actually gives you all the empty places that's unique to
feel the color in. For example, we're going
to take some colors out of this veil I
have drawn here. As previous session
I showed you, you could just press and hold on the screen and it choose the color
you like to have. And then you just put it in the empty space in the palette. And it sits there. You can keep choosing
the foreign color and then tap one of the empty places you
have in your palette. And it creates a
palette for you. As you can see, I'm just
choosing some colors. Go here. You can choose your colors, of course from here as well, like this red I chose. You can just choose
and put it here. That's how I have created
my own palette here. When you're done video palette, you can set this one as default that it could come up in
your default palette. From here, press the three
dots and say Set as Default. And this one would be your
default one here in the disk. As you can see, I hope you enjoy playing
with colors in your palette. This is the most font
part in Procreate because you can create as many
as colors as you want. And then you can play
with real reals. And it's very important
for your designs here. And this top for example, I, myself use it a lot because as you can
see on this picture, there are like, there
are some here, there. There are some colors
that they are in a same color type but different. And that's how I use it. I just change the color here and change the
saturation and brightness. It's still the same
type of color, but the front and you can use it as a shading for your art.
8. Introduction to layers: This part is about layers. And I would say this is the most important
part of procreate. So from here you can
see the layers I have, for example, for this drawing. And I'm going to explain
how to work with layers. And I'm going to introduce
two very useful effects in the layers that you
could use any would change your life in
drawing and illustrating. Select the layer and you can create another layer on
the top of that one. Just click on it. It shows different options. One of the options
is clipping mask, and I'm going to show you how to work with clipping mask exactly. When you select clipping mask, basically, you can
choose any color. And you can start
drawing on this one. It wouldn't go outside of the layer you have
below this layer. So it doesn't matter
where your pen go. It still in this layer. And that's how you
can create texture. And you don't have to be worried about if you go out of lines. Isn't that cool? So easy and so effective? And T's layer it
only 6-bit this one. And you can also merge
it down if your file is finalized and you can
have like one file only, or I just undo this one. The good point about this one
is if you didn't like that, you can just delete
it and you still have the main layer you
have at the beginning. There is another option
in layer and its mass. For this one, I'm going
to create a mask. And as you can see,
there is another lawyer at the layer at the
top of this one. I just select the black
color because in the mask, if you want to do
the highest effect, you do black color. And then if you want to
do the Lewis effect, you do it a bit less black. For example, I choose
this gray and you can see the effects on that one. And like the previous
one I showed you, it doesn't affect
the the main layer. You have an that's really
cool because you can do so many soften this one without affecting
the layer below. If you want, for example, what the top, the lines you did, you just use the
color of white and go on top of the
drawings you've had. And I just add a bit
of more paint here. Then using gray or just
use bit lower effect here. And another cool thing That's
how we work with is you can actually invert the color
and see what happens here. Actually inverts what you've
done to another layer. And it's sometimes it's very helpful when you
use this option. If you don't like it, like Locke last time, you can just swipe it to
live and delete your layer. As easy as this one. This session I'm
going to talk about later effect and
opacity and how to.
9. Layers effect, opacity, blend: In this session, I'm going to
talk about later effect and opacity and how to blend
layers together are important. A couple of other
layers in this photo to show how you can
play with layers. As you can see, like
each of these plants, they have their own layer. And in the throat
side you can see the board n. And here
you can play V8, different type of
layers you have. If you keep looking at
the plants we have, you will see the effect. So when I change two
different options, you get different
effects on these layers. Fun of the use of this
thing is, for example, if you have a texture
or something, as you can see, you can show the
texture of the layers blur by changing these ones. And this one, for example, see how it affected layer to the blurb on any changes
or the layers here, which is very helpful. Then you can change the
opacity of this fossa. If I change this font to normal, then from here you can see the opacity of the layers
you can change here.
10. Draw your art with drawing : In this session
we're going to draw some lines, create some shapes, and I'm going to show you how to make a straight
lines in Procreate. If we choose a brush
and pick a color, you can draw lines in Procreate, but it might not a perfect line. There is a way to do
perfect lines in Procreate. Undo this one. You can just draw a line and
keep pushing with your pen. Procreate, make it
a straight for you. For example, you do another
like shaped like this. Then just hold your pen and
it make it straight for you. We can do another
line, of course, hold the pen and it make
it straight for you. This isn't limited,
just four lines. You can also create shapes, so you can create a circle. It's not perfect, but
just hold your pen. Then you can use the Option
Edit Shape activates, which you can choose
between circle and ellipse and everything you choose a change
the shape of U, shape of the circle for you. You can still edit it. And VOD, you have this
option activated. You can change it to
circle or ellipse. You can also do
that with square. So I'm going to draw a
square and hold my pen. The option activates
at each shape. You could choose
between rectangle, a square, or just polyline, which you can edit
as a polynomial. Still have the option active. I go back to a square and it changed the
shape to a square.
11. Use Effets in Drawing Guid: The knees. Another option in drawing, in Procreate and that A's on the Canvas part
is the Drawing Guide. You need to activate
the guide first. Then you can go to Edit Drawing Guide to see
the different options. The first option is 2D, and it keeps you the line
that you can change, the opacity of the line, the thickness, the
size, the color. You need to activate the assisted drawing
here. Press Done. Know you have a layer that you cannot draw between the squares. You won't be able to
do the free handing. As you can see, it only allows me to do a straight line here. As soon as he
creates a new layer, you would be able to
do the freehand one. Let's, let's try
the other layers. I'm creating a new layer. Go back to the drawing guide, go back to Edit Drawing. And this time I'll
choose the next option. Change the opacity,
change the thickness. And I'll make the
size a bit bigger. I'll make it tend to Assisted
Drawing on and press Okay. Here. Now, again, you won't be able to do the free handing, whatever you do it changed
between the lines. But I find this
one very helpful. To draw, like 3D
shapes like this. Then you can color
it. Of course. Once again, if you
create a new layer, you would be able to do
the free hand drawing. Let's delete this layer, create a new one, and test the other
Drawing Guide. Perspective. This part could be your favorite if you're doing lots
of drawing here. So turn the perspective on, tend to Assisted
Drawing on for stone. This is great for
drawing cities or buildings because it beautifully shows you how to
do the buildings. How straight works in
a prospective way. Let's delete this level. Go back to the drawing. The next one is the one
I'm personally use a lot, creating Canvas and
other things. Sport. There is an option
key that you can click and it gives
you four options. Vertical, you can
choose, press Done. And I'll show how
to use that one. You can just like make faces on this one, or different shapes. And you can even color them. Whatever you do on one
side it duplicates. On the other side. That's one of the options here. Deleting the layer,
creating new one. Go back to the drawing
from the option. Go with the horizontal one. I think he can guess
what this line does. It duplicates the layer. You can draw so many creative
things with this one. You can also color them. Let's create another level. Go back to drawing. Go back to option, to choose the last one. Press this one. You can create so
many cool things. You can paint them. It's a great way to play with. You can miss drawing beauty
who thinks with this layer because it's just so
easy and beautiful. You can paint them. These were the tools
you can use in layers, the Canvas part. And you can create masterpiece with your
iPad and Apple pin.
12. Paint your art, add effects and Resize your art: The start having fun drawing
and painting your art. As you can see, my art
has got different layers, and I have already
painted these ones, but I just created a layer under the vote to show you how to do painting and how to do the
effects on your painting. Here for our way, I just painted that dark
blue and I'm creating a new layer at the top
and using a brush. I'm just going to select
this one actually to do the clipping mask I
showed you in previous ones. I'm going to choose
the right color. Change my size of brush. Add the Beta of paint here. Go back to my palette
and choose another one. Change the opacity. I do. Some more paint. The fun part in
Procreate East to play with colors with your
layers and the effect. You can find the Adjustment
tab at the top left. And one of the most, one of the most useful
thing I use usually do is this saturation
here, the first option. And you can see already just by changing the first bar here, how my colors change. That's pretty cool isn't. For our way. We just going to choose
a bit of purple here. You can change the
saturation here. You can change the
brightness here. Leave the brightness at 50%. For now, I'll leave this
setting as is this one. Go back to the layer. There are more to apply on your painting and all of
them are pretty cool. So the curve one I use a lot again is the combination
of the first one. You can just handle all these things to
get the discharge. Every places you choose
mix different effects. If you go back to
the adjustment, there are more
options like you can create noise on your painting. This is very good for your
painting them we would like to make it like a
big effect on it. When you click noise on
the actually Canvas, you just scroll to
write and lift. And you can see as
I slide to write, the more noise, applause on why painting and I
slipped to lift. It's less noise. This is too much I
believe for my painting. So I'll just go back. I change it like
your bite a bit. I changed it a bit
less around maybe 47%. Like it that way. Going back to our adjustment, there are plenty more
to play and explore. And explore. You can liquefy it
just by changing, applying with your brush. And this is great for
like change the size. This is great for waves. To create the front shape. We can also use
this animation is actually there are many options here. You can choose like
and play with it. Pretty cool is make sure you make yourself familiar with adjustment options
because it really helpful and you can make so
many pretty things here. I'm going to change the
opacity of this one. Changing the layer opacity. One more thing I would
like to show you here is you can select different layers altogether
just by sliding to right. You can see two of my layers are activated and another
layer to choose. You can choose another layer, but sliding two right here. And now you can apply different things at the
same time of this level. On this layers are locked to show you how to resize
these layers altogether. The option here is to resize and you have
different formats. Cia, the freedom. You can resize in
any shape you want. The uniform. You can resize in the same
format and shape you've had. The disturb, you
can change angles. The last one is pretty cool. You can change
whatever you want. And as you can see, it's applying on
boat on four layers. I have selected altogether. You press that one. It this activated. Whereas look really weird. So I'm going to change onto
this one and change it back to what it was before. Hopefully you found
this one very helpful. Please let yourself go and play with these
things and have fun.
13. Export your art image in different formats: Now that we have created
a little odd here, we can export these are two different formats from the action you need
to go to share. And you have different
options here. The first one, you can export in Procreate format and send
it to someone who has Procreate or you can open it
in Procreate later and it gives you all the layers and
all the effects you've done. The second one is
the same format, but you can open
it in Photoshop, the PSD file, and
it's quite useful. Pdf file you can export as PDF. But the most useful one
probably are the JPEG and PNG, which are the format
in four pictures. For example, to export this
whale in a picture format, I'm going to use JPEG. Jpeg. And he'd asked to
where to save it. If you press Save Image, it automatically save
it on your laptop. But you can also save it on the Dropbox if you have
Dropbox connected to your iPad or just shaved
with video friends. The PNG for law school
are quite useful, especially if you want to
make a transparent file and you can use it in
different arts like Photoshop. You can add this PNG file without background
and it's very useful. You just enable the background and any other layers you have, you've had as background and you press share here
and you save it as PNG. And this one save your
file as PNG picture.
14. Export your art time-laps video: For more interesting
thing that you can find in procreate is time-lapse. In the action part. Go to video and you can play your time-lapse here to
see what you've done. And of course, after assuming
the things on this layers, or you could just
export the time-lapse of your drawing by
pressing the third option, Export time-lapse, it
gives you the option of early exporting
thirty-seconds. Or you can just export
the full length, which is usually like
two or three minutes max because it's actually
very fast recording. Unlike exporting to block
exporting two pictures, it asks you where to save
and you can save the video. This is a video format
on your laptop, on or on your shared drives.
15. Congratulations on completing this course, get creative and play!: Hopefully I have helped
you to become more interested in Procreate
to become an illustrator. And thank you again for
joining me in this journey. See you later. Bye.
