1. Introduction : Hello, my name is Ryo Katagiri
I live in Japan. A professional manga comic artist, illustrator. I'm a Japanese Shonen manga artist Together with the publisher Manga university, We were invited as a guest to an anime events in the US to give a manga workshop.

do you want to draw manga, comics on your iPad? If so, this class is for you! My manga has been serialized in the weekly Shonen Sunday and Monthly Shonen Magazine. My works are currently published in a total of 13 books now. I’m one of the authors of the how to draw manga book. I also drew a well-known crunchy roll Hime and Yuzu in the collaboration on cookbook 3. Of course these drawings, Were also done with an iPad! Now, I've been using my iPad in Clip studio for my works and illustrations. This one, this one, this one! In this class, I will teach you the basic operations and how to create a one-page manga. Whether you are new to manga or already have an original story. Let's draw a page of manga together to see how it goes. Okay, Let's draw manga together.
2. 1 Basic Operation : Let's start with the basic population. You can draw a line with an iPad pencil like this. To go back, tap two fingers. To undo, tap with three fingers. You can zoom in and zoom out with two fingers. And you can turn to Canvas like this When you are inking our character. You can turn the canvas to the direction you are comfortable with to draw clean lines especially turn the canvas when I drawing hair and closing lines. Here is a quick access palate. When you tap on it, it will show something like this. You can enlarge, reduce, and rotate the drawn picture. You can also transform it into any shape you want. For example, you can paste a picture drawn on another layer ,
changing its shape like this. And of course you can also copy and paste. Okay, Next here is mesh transformation. Mesh transformation is a function that can change an image freely. For example, it's useful for changing pattern of clothes. I use the very often is Flip horizontal tool To correct facial imbalances in my characters. When you flip the art, you can see that the balance of the character's face is not quite right. So you can use this tool to check if the balance is good or bad. You can also flip the image upside down. Delete erases everything you've drawn on the layer. But if you want to go back just you can double tap it.
3. 2 Canvas Setting : Today, I'd like to show you how to create your canvas, especially how to create a manga manuscript page, tap File and then New. Then you can choose a from a variety of a styles for your work. The first one on the left is for illustration, useful for signal pictures. The second one is for Webtoon. It is long and narrow canvas. The third one is the manga paper style which I use most. The fourth one is for Doujinshi (fan zines). If you are interested in self publishing, choose this one. The fifth is a style where you can customize all the settings. The sixth style is for creating animations. I use the third manga style and this first illustration style, very often. Tap the third one Now let's make a manga manuscript paper. You can choose the size of the paper you want to draw on. Usually B4 is for professionals. Some manga artist draw on A4.
if you want to submit your manga to Publisher’s contest ,read the size rules carefully before setting up your entry there, each publisher will have an outline of the contest on their website. Here it says DPI, DPI is the resolution. The resolution affects the fineness of the the image. If you make this small number ,the outline will be rough. Most among artists use a resolution of at least 600 DPI. So when you're drawing manga, 600 DPI is recommended. If you are doing Color manga or color illustration, I recommend 350 DPI. Here is a basic expression color setting. You can use color when you are drawing But it is important to note that Japanese manga is black and white. So when you're submitting your manga, it must be in black and white. When you are work is completed and converted to data, be sure to convert it, to Duotone mode or grayscale before submitting it. Next, you can change the number of pages here. For example, let's say you want to make 32 pages manga. In Japan,First page always starts on the left. Keep in mind that first page of a Japanese manga starts on the left page. You can leave the binding on the right, but please check the style in your country. On the right , here is a story information. You can write story name, subtitle, author’s name here. And here is about a page number.Folio. You can arrange them, position, size, font-style, white edge, etc. Be careful not to put them as a picture in the manga page, It would be wired to suddenly see a number an important scene. So keep the numbers out of the manga as a picture. That's it for the basic settings. Tap Ok. Now you have a manga manuscript page like this .
The manga page will be displayed in a small area On the left. Top the page and you want to draw on, and you can draw. The art will be reflected on the left side.
4. 3 Drafting : Today I'm going to show you how I draw manga draft. First, let's set the layer to draft mode. You will see a blue and white mark here. Tap on this to sets and layer to draft mode . The line is blue now. the blue line means that the layer is in draft mode. In Japan, Blue has always been used for drafting because it is not reflected in the printing process. Many manga artists use light blue colored pencil for drafting. You can use any color you like, but the default color is this blue. Okay, Let's draw rough draft. You can use any pen for your draft. Decide on the approximate position and flame. In Japanese Manga, we read from right to left, Zig-zag from top to bottom. When drawing a rough draft, consider the overall balance, readability, And eye movement of the reader. Draw the leading lines first with arrows to make it easier to position them. The reader’s eye will go to dialogue, the characters’s face, and especially eyes of the characters. The advantage of Setting the layer to draft mode is
Selection and fills are not applied. I'm changing position a little bit, considering the eye movement of the reader. Now rough sketch is down. this is okay But I’ll create an additional draft layer on top of this and make a clean draft. Create a new layer. set the new layer to draft mode. Rename the layer names for clarity. You can change the transparency here. reduce the transparency of this rough draft layer. Maybe around 30 to 40. Then you can see the first draft layer. When I draw, I often look at images on the internet for reference. If you swipe from the bottom like this, You will see the icons you use most often. For example, press and hold this Pinterest icon and movie it to the right. In this way, you can draw while looking at a reference picture. swipe right if you want to remove it from the screen. Now I can draw more details line on the new layer. I’m drawing this while looking at the images for reference At this stage, I draw the background very roughly. I carefully draw the characters line first. I spent up to 17 minutes on this draft. The clean draft is done! To next step is to make the frame.
5. 4 Paneling : Today, let's make manga panels. In Japanese manga we read from right to left, zigzag from top to bottom. Today I will show you how to panel out a basic manga page. First, I'm going to make frame on this draft. Top [layer]and [new layer] Select [Frame border folder], The standard line width is around 1 mm. Press OK. The main frame has been created now. The lighter blue area means that a mask is applied. Let's divide this main frame into individual panels. We'll use [Cut border tool] to split the frame into panels. You can see the frame divider icon here. Tap it and tap on the sub tool here and select [ Split Border] Now you can make Panels. Here is the tool property option that allows you can change the spacing between the panels In Shonen manga, vertical spacing is usually 2 or 3 mm. Horizontal spacing is around 8mm to 1 cm. Spacing between panels in Shojo and Seinen manga more varied. You can change this to suit your manga style. I recommend imitating the panel width of your favorite mango when starting out. Now let’s divide the frame horizontally Swipes a screen from the left. This is edge keyboard Here you can see the Shift key. Use Shift key to make precise panels easily. Holding down the Shift key, you can make a perfect horizontal gutter, Vertically gutter, diagonally gutter. Next, let's split the flame vertically . Here, I have created a basic frame. Some panels are drawn to the edge of the paper like this An illustration drawn to the edge of the paper is called Tachikiri in Japanese. This Tachikiri is effective for meaningful scenes or when you want to show a large picture. To use Tachikiri technique, use the objects tool You can use this object tool move the panels like this By drag the small light circle on the panel, The selected frame to move the sides. Press small yellow triangle here, and only this panel will become Tachikiri. You can also select and move individual corners
by tapping on the corner dot. There is a technique to make your character go over panels. If you want to your character to overlap lathe panel, you can Rasterise the panel layer.
to rasterise, top [layer]. And here is [Rasterise] then it becomes a just a line layer. After rasterizing, you can erase desired lines with the eraser tool. the frame is now complete. Well done!
6. 5 Inking : Today let's add ink on your character together. Let's create a new layer. Make sure to separate the draft layer from the inking layer. If you draw without the pen pressure, you will get a thin line. If you want to draw a thicker line with more pressure. Open the sub tool here, You can see the different types of pens. The G pen is most commonly used by manga artist. The G pen is used to draw characters. You can line clean and smooth line. I often use this pen for single illustration. The real G-pen here is a little rougher. So you can draw analog like lines. This pen is also recommended for drawing characters. My favorite is textured pen. It gives you an analog touch and the lines are very grainy. I use the textured pen for manga and illustrations.
There are a variety of pens available, You can download it on Clip Studio website also. So you can choose the one you like the best. You can find one for character inking, another for backgrounds and so on. Draw the outline thicker and face and inner lines a little thinner for a cleaner look. In the tool property, you can set the pen size, transparency, stabilization, and the speed settings. I usually use a pen size of 0.8 to 1mm for character inking. When I draw thin lines such as a hair and eyes, I change the pen size to 0.3 to 0.5mm but remember that you can draw a thin line without pen pressure. On my settings stabilisation around 21 to 22. pen starting and ending around 4 to 5. But I change these numbers depends on the pen. You can change the values here to make it easier for you to draw. Okay, Let's talk about the pen pressure setting, tap the logo in the upper left corner of the screen. Here you will find a pen pressure sitting. You can adjust the pen pressure here. If the pressure is weak, this curve will be upward. If you have a strong pressure, This curve will be downward. My favorite setting is S shape like this. If do you this, you can get the line Smooth strokes starting and ending, Please try customizing the pen pressure to make it easier for your inking. I always ink characters first. All the backgrounds later, because I may change the position and size of the characters later . Okay, next, let's draw speech balloons. Draw the speech balloons on a separate layer
so that you can resize it and reposition later. Any pen is ok. I use G pen. I spent about 2 hours on this inking. Use thin and the thick lines for your characters. If all the lines are the same thickness, The picture will look flat. The character inking and speech balloons are finished. Please refer to this video and try drawing with me so far!
7. 6 background first half : Today we are going to draw back ground for our manga, create a new background folder. Then creat a draft layer for the background. Start with a rough drought. Reduce the transparency of the original draft layer I draw while I'm looking at reference pictures on Pinterest. In this panel, I'm going to draw Japanese doll .. .. If you want to draw detailed backgrounds You will need to know perspective. Tap on the [Layer] tab. And you'll see [Ruler] inside. Tap it. You will see [Create the perspective Ruler]. You can choose 1 ,2 or 3 perspective Ruler. The background of this panel is 2-point perspective. The ruler is created naw This ruler can be moved with the object tool .
move this small circle to adjust the eye level and a vanishing point to the background. Now, I can draw a line that matches the ruler. Create a background inking layer and let’s ink to the background. For the inking background, Manga artists uses
a Maru pen or a mapping pen. This pen is good for backgrounds because
it's produces fine and clean lines. The background line should be delicate
and thinner than the character's line. That's a character stands out. I use copy and paste technique often. Here is a figure tool. Figure tool allows you to create it all kinds of shapes such as straight lines, curves and figures, saturated lines and stream lines for drawing manga I’m using this figure tool to draw a Japanese doll. Draw a new layer. Erasing Unnecessary parts and additional lines You can also use a transparent colored pen
for backgrounds and characters. Draw freehand dots to give it texture. If you want to release the perspective rulers, set the ruler layer icon to invisible .. .. The background of the third panel is done. Next time, I'll show you how to draw the background a little differently.
8. 7 background second half : Today I'm going to show you how to draw a background draft in freehand. For small panels and less important backgrounds draft,
I draw roughly in freehand. Ok, now finished.
making a perspective ruler adjust the eye level and the vanishing point to the background draft. Now I can ink it on new layer . I use black to fill in the shadows I draw fine lines randomly to bring out the texture of the wood. I also use a lot of transparent color pens. And random dots with freehand. Set the layer to draft mode and erase the unwanted part.
4th panel is complete. And now for 2nd panel. We manga artists often use photo tracing for the background.
tap [file] Then tap [import] then select
[image] or[from the photo library] And choose a photo. This is a photo I downloaded from a copyright-free photo site. You can trace photo like this copyright free, or if you have taken it yourself. change the position and resize of the photo to make it fit to your rough draft. Ok, create a perspective ruler to match the photo. This photo has 3 vanishing points, so it's 3 point perspective. Adjusting the eye and vanishing point. Set the photo in draft mode and change the blue color. Start with a simple line and draw it on a new layer. Create a layer for each Panel to draw the background This is the perspective ruler is already set for each panel. Paint black on area that are not clear parts and shadows. Sometimes it doesn't fit the perspective ruler well, here I am using the straight line tool of the figure tool. .. To make sure to save your walk. You don't have to draw every line perfectly Try arranging or reduce them. Can be as simple as you like. Some people stop drawing manga because
It’s too difficult to background. First of all, Let's draw a simple background. even if it's freehand. Once you get used to it, you can try different angles and more realistic one. Use a thicker line on the thin line for the background as well. In Japan, manga artists hire assistant to draw the background. when I was working on weekly series, I hired 3 assistants to draw the background for my work. inking is finished I’d like to add some text on the sign. Here is a text icon. You can add a text here. Use the shift key to make it evenly large. In the tool property, You can change the font style, size,
direction etc Rasterize the text layer to make it just a line drawing layer. Top layer. And tap Rasterise Use Free Transform to align text with to background perspective I sprayed it white to blend it in The letters are too clear,so use a transparent color pen to cut around the letters. Make it a jagged and make it look like an old sign .. 2nd panel is done. Let's move on last panel. When drawing the background on the Tachikiri panels, Draw about the 5 mm to 1 cm over the red line. If you don't draw over the outermost line, you may not have enough pictures to be published in a comic book or magazine. I’ll draw draft of the background for this panel. The background of this panel is 1 point perspective.
Adjusting ruler. this is a simple draft I drew. I'm going to draw in the details when I do the inking. I'm starting with a simple line on inking, drawing the details while looking at reference photos, I fill in shadows and other black areas with black as soon as possible because I draw black first, I feel like The screen with fill up and I ‘ll be relieved. .. Lower the transparency of the layer to make the draft visible. Let’s use a pattern brush for the background. I want to give it to the feel of an old building. So I draw random stains. drawing a good background requires strong lines, detail lines, shadows and accurate perspective. It's also important not to draw too much of the background leave a little white space so reader don't get tired. Last panel is now complete. The background is done! Just a few more finishing touches and it'll be perfect.
9. 8 Beta Painting : Let's do Beta(painting) today. In Japanese, “Beta” means to paint black, create a new layer for the Beta(painting) As I've said before, manga is black and white. Beta can be used in place such as shadow, clothing colors And hair, look at the overall balance of the manga page and add black. I draw outline and then paint in black with bucket tool. To Beta(painting)part, I like to use a lot of straight lines. You can add a more Beta(painting) inside in the main character design, There should be a Beta part spot somewhere. Don't worry so much about the light source. Let's clearly separate the black from white. Obviously. The area that are going to be in shadows
should be clearly black. Finds the area will be in shadow. And turn it black, for example, Wrinkles in clothing, under clothing, under the neck etc. The black color makes it look more 3D and more manga like. you can also use white spray or pattern brushes as you see fit. If we want to add a large shadow to a character, for example, changes a Beta(painting) Layer to draft mode
And temporarily turn it to blue. And you can see the line drawings of the characters, making it easier to balance them. small gaps are not filled with Beta(painting). Check the bucket tool Settings, There’s a sub tool called
[Enclose and fill] This tool can be used to enclose and fill small gaps with color. Draw the details of the object using a transparent colored pen Release draft mode to check the placement of the Beta(painting) I added a few pattern brushes. As an additional technique, Set the characters’s line drawings in draft mode
and temporarily change it to blue. If you erase that blue line, you can make your characters appear out of the black. But please note that these characters line drawings will disappear. Even you want to bring them back later. You won't be able to. This manga is a little dark and mysterious story. So there’s a lot of black. The Beta( painting) are done.
Wow it has a real manga look!
10. 9 Screentone : Finally, today is the screen tone. What is the screen tone? Have you ever read a Japanese manga? Let's take a look at most famous manga magazine, weekly Shonen jump. A screen tone is a graphic pattern, anything that looks gray color is a screen tone.. You can see a lot of gray in various concentrations. For example, it can be used in the eyes , hair color, clothing color, shadows ,back ground, sky, and many other places. Screen tones come in a variety of graphic types and can be used for Manga effect. You can download them from the Clip studio website. and trying to find your favorite screentones! Now let's actually use a screen tones on this page. Tap, It's a magic wand tool. Then tap on the area where you want to use a screen tones and select it. A section launcher will appear below. Top the 2nd one from the right.
This is creating a new tone layer. Here you can change a number on those frequencies, densities, types, and angles of the screen tones. For example, I use a tone with a frequency of 60 and the density of 40%. The screen tone is now applied like this. I'm going to use the bucket tool to paint other parts as well. If there are gaps that cannot be filled with bucket tool, use the pen tool to add lines. I'll apply the same screen tone to the characters in the other panels. Next let’s use gradient. I'm going to apply a gradient to this character's hair. Tap to select and tap to gradient tool .open the sub tool there's different type of gradient Tap the [manga gradient ]from among them. Dragging that the gradient tool on the raster layer allows you to draw gradient, From specified the position. use the objects tool, to change the density and orientation. I was able to paint a gradient, but this is not screenshot yet. Tab the [window] tab And the top [layer property ].
layer property is now displayed and drag it to make it Larger. In the layer property, there should be a mark called [Tone].
Tap it. The gradient is now in screen Tone mode. add the same gradient to the other panels as well. Tap the Tone mark in layer property. I often use are transparent to color pen to draw highlight in the characters ‘s hair. If you want to apply largest shadows with screen tone, Use [Lasso] in the [Marquee tool] And select the area you want to paint. Here I will apply it with a density of 10 % Erase the inside of the eyes and backlighting with eraser tool when small gaps are not filled with screen tone, The method is the same as applying Beta painting. Check the bucket tool setting, There’s a sub tool called [ Enclose and fill] and enclose and fill small gaps with it. Screen tones are often dot patterns, but you can change the shape. As you can see, it can be changed into various shapes. For example, change this type from [Circle ]to [Noise] Now screen tone has been changed to a graphic pattern of noise. I added a light gradient to this character's hair Open the layer property ,top [Tone] And you can change dots setting in there also
I change the type from [Circle]to [Noise] So you can also change the gradient pattern town like this. I use the Marquee tools or a pen to draw fine shadows on the face. Screen towns are done. Great job!
11. 10 finishing : You've done really well. Today is a final touch. You may have a lines and the tongue sticking out of the panels like this. Let's release these to make a perfect among walk. The bottom of the layer, data layer car the paper, make it invisible, then tap the frame layer. I'm going to fill the top frame layer with white dural directory on the frame layer with the white pen. This is are using a white pen to separate the character and the frame lines. Makes invisible background layer by layer, screen tone layer. So you'll just a bucket tool to paint on earlier of the frame data you want to be white. Ram has been painted white. And the same way Let's fill in the speed of Babylon. It was white. Okay, So let's visualize all the layers to lines and the screen Tong Du Bois sticking out are now gone. The juniors or laptop screen tones. You might have many screen towns layers like this one. Tap to form that icon at the top of the layer. Changes a folder name to screen tone. Swipe from the left to show up to edge keyboard. Let's put all this green tones layer here in this folder. Here is a bottom and top screen tone layers from this. Okay, How did the down the Shift key and top to bottom screen tone layer, this is how multiple layers are selected. Then drag it to the screen tone for the above, where you see the LED border Laplace of the pen. Good are just green towel layers are not in discrete-time. Further, organize these many layers by separating them with folders. If you want to export the completed Peggy, tap the File tab and then tap Export single layer. Then choose which format you want to exporting. I usually choose the bottom one, Photoshop document, Czechs, a filename, and check export setting. As I say before, are equal. You want to use the screen tones. Make sure you're set to do Tom Tanja and the mode for expression Kiara sets the output size to 100% and the select for comic who are process WHO and scaling. Tap, okay? And the same. Okay, let's check it. Tap the File tab and tap up and to say EFS, a Photoshop file. Open it. He said data has been exported as our Photoshop or fire. Is crane towns are reflected properly. Here is a finished page. Let's put the text into speech bubbles. Two tensions. A mode uses a bar of the texts. It can leave an impression. Okay, create a take his father at the top. Top is important. Organize your texts layers in the farther, in the same way. Hold down the Shift key and the top to top texture layer and a bottom thickest layer drag it into the take a supernode. Okay. Take this layer is not in the ticket so far. All right. Organizer layers like this. Here is a finished America pays who is text? How did it go? Thank you so much. Uh, for for I me so far. Even if you don't get it like, don't worry about making mistakes. So best way to imply job is to keep drawing. Best of luck. Thank you.
