1. Introduction to typography mp4: Hello, my name is Monica and I'm a graphic designer based in United Kingdom. Today, I went to teach you what does typographic and introduce you into this? So what is type biography? Biography is a style or appearance of text or in human language. It's every letter we see is a serial baggage. It is your bread grocery list. Is it your smartphone app? Is it newspaper, everything is topography. Also, the biography can refer to the art form of text styling, which we're going to learn today. Why do we need to be good at typography? That's a good question. Exercise styling wave can play very important role in your text and the information you want to communicate. E.g. the article headline is both in big text to inform reader about the contents of the article and helps to decide whether or not it is useful information. 2. 4 serifs: What are the styles, what are the fonts, the typefaces? Which one do you prefer? There is two main styles, or the typeface switches, serif and sans-serif. So let's get started with serves first. There is an opinion and the legend and maybe it's true, maybe it's not. That set of style is the very first style of typefaces, like structured fonts. If we will look into old Roman sculptures, monuments, writings in the stones, we can see that there is those slits in the ends of the letters, as we call them strokes. So originally they been made, as legend tells that they've been made to stop stone cracking. And the text was engraved or otherwise in hammered into the stone. This is why we have serif typefaces which has strokes on the ends of the letters. But let's get back to our days now. So what are the most common serif typefaces? I can tell you there is Bodoni, Garamond, Baskerville Times New Roman. I believe you saw them all somewhere in this software you use. For what? For our serif typefaces, Serif fonts initially are extremely versatile. They can be used for headlines, for logotypes, for branding overall, and for body text as well. Great examples of usage of set of typefaces is Vogue. Vanity Fair magazine of in my personal opinion, serif typefaces gives the luxury impression. And due to the long history of the typeface style, they are more used to express luxury tradition and well established branding. However, this is not a rule. Next is sans serifs. 3. San serifs: Oh, SDM nodes series was first and the sensors happen afterwards. Initially, the idea was to remove the strokes and have just simple letters. Most common sans serif typefaces or aerial Gill Sans for dura Helvetica, I believe you heard about them all as well. What are they for? San-serif fonts are also very versatile. They can be used either for headlines, for logo variation, for body text everywhere. Basically, sensitives are also popular for luxury branding. It's not a rule as only, only slaves would be luxury branding tool. But the only difference is that very commonly they're spaced quite widely. But I can also, this is not a row. Also, some service works for more affordable appearance, e.g. while Vogue is in Bodoni typeface and the sun is in Franklin, you can see the difference between a high-end fashion magazine and daily newspaper we read every morning. 4. Decorative: Another group of fonts I would like to talk to you about, which is, I believe very important as well, is declarative fonts. Here we talking about handwriting, calligraphy, hand rendered fonts, black letter, and all you can think of and unleash your integrated based. But beware this start, this stylistic choice is best used in moderation. Imagine it will be quite difficult to read if it's on a website or an app. So it is best to save them for a really special occasions. Again, it does not a rule that the logo must be decorated, but if you choose to do so, that's better to do the correlative letters in the logo rather than in a main body text. I will give you a couple of examples of declarative texts overuse. And you can see clearly what I have in mind. Can you see how difficult it is to read? Is it suitable for the component? Some of them, yes, perhaps. Some of them not. Perhaps it is your choice as a designer to decide. 5. Size: Also very important part of topography is a type size and weight. And why is that and what is that type size is measured by points. This is why we see PT in most of the softwares we use. You probably notice that the new opening, any software you usually use, 12 points is the standard default size. It will give you straight away when you start your project. Why is that? Because size 12 is great when you're working digitally or you creating content, text for digital appearance. However, if you're planning to print your work, It's better to consider smaller size because on a piece of paper, 12 point text size, Good luck, little bit too big. Also, it is very important to mention that as a part of typography, art, text size can play a big role in the hierarchy. Simply saying the biggest words will be seen thirst. So that means they are the most important information. 6. Weight: Type wait, what is it? It is basically a thickness of the letters. As we used to see, options like thin, regular, centered, bold, bold, and black. There is more than that, but these are the most common ones. They also can play a huge part in the hierarchy of the texts. As even if text is the same size as the main body, heavier weight type will be noticed first and it will guide your art for the information much easier. 7. Summary: Okay, so now quickly recap what we learned today in this crash course. There are two main types of typeface, sedatives and sans serifs. They can be used in a wide range of different situations and are extremely versatile. The co-operative fonts are all other fonts which look basically the correlative. Either it's calligraphy, handwriting, black letter, handwritten fonts, novelty, et cetera, and best used in minimum amount of text as if overused can be hard to read, not legible. I emphasize dictates the text importance higher here, and eligibility. Aka, you must set the type the way so you can read it easily and about and a struggle for your eye or mind. Typeface, weight, the thickness of letters. And it also dictates the high and the importance of the information and contributes to legibility. If your text is bold, black extreme the bolt, it can be quite hard to read, I think, don't you? I hope that this quick guide helps you to introduce into typography art and help you get started on your first project. 8. Task: Okay, So I almost forgot about this just before we leave, just before we finish, I want to challenge you. Give a design task. I was thinking a lot. One would be so fun to create and everyone would enjoy making this solid. And after a little bit of thoughts, I decided that it would be great idea to create a purely typographic poster promoting your favorite movie. And when I'm saying purely typographic, I really mean that you can only use type and color. No images, no illustrations, and nothing like that. Only take power of n. And it's going to be challenging. I think in some cases, in some cases perhaps not so much. But don't forget that the rules of typography is still applies whenever you're making a poster for the movie. Oh, you're writing a letter for your best friend. So don't forget about the hierarchy above the type size, type weight, and how overall it's placed on the sheet of paper. So don't forget to share your designs with me. I'm really looking forward to look at them and I hope you're going to absolutely smash it. And also another thing, don't forget to check if kerning is alright. What's kidney? The kidney is. Finish to tell that in another lesson, don't wait. Let me know. If you're interested to know more about the infographic, please leave me a comment or ask me questions. What is specifically you're interested in? And I'll try to make a class about it sometime soon. And talking about canning if you really interested, whether it is which I believe you are watching this glass, just find out and let me know in the comments. 9. THE END: So thank you very much for watching if you have any questions, feel free to ask them in the comments section and see you in the next lesson. Goodbye.
