Introduction to Self Publishing for Beginners

1. Introduction: Hello. Welcome to self publishing in this class. You're going to learn about all the steps that takes to take your idea of a book and turn it into an actual finished print product. We're going to be working with the creative cloud specifically, we're going to be using in design. That's going to be for the pages of our books, and you can use in design for the shop illustrator. Whatever you're comfortable with for the cover, you're going to design a book. You're going to design its cover and you're going to take that book and you're going to turn it into an actual print product. So what could you do with this? If you're an illustrator, maybe you're going to create a Children's book. Maybe you have a friend or family member who has a manuscript, and they've been sitting on it for a while. Get the permission and turn it into a work of fiction. Are you a graphic novelist? Create a graphic novel or a zine photographer? Maybe you want to make a photo book. If your designer you could maybe make a portfolio so you can see the options here are rather endless. It's just going to depend on what you're interested in. It's a really interesting genre to study, and the options are endless. Is toe whatever product output you are interested in printing in this class, you're going to explore the many facets a self publishing that's gonna put the power of publishing in your hands. I hope you enjoy. 2. Lulu and Blurb for Self Publishing: to start your self publishing journey, I'm going to show you two sites that I've used in the past that I do highly recommend. And ultimately, what it's going to boil down to is which is your preference? The 1st 1 that I've used for self publishing is blurb. This one is really nice for the more photography, um, you know, photo full color oriented ones. Um, not that does not to say that Lulu doesn't, But I have really loved the quality of the blurb for the photo books when I've had them printed there. And you can see they also have magazines in the e books and trade books and photo books. And you, you know, anything that you can imagine they pretty much have, um, there This is a little bit different because you have to get their ad on in. It installs him to your adobe creative suite. Um, but otherwise, it's pretty straightforward as well as Lulu. Lulu is pretty straightforward as well. Um, you can create your own print book. Um, and you can see the options that you have. You have your standard paperbacks, premium hardcovers, photo books, calendars, etcetera, and you can see all of their sizes under here. If I was just to get with a standard paperback, you know, a six by 900 pages is going to cost you as of today's date to 49. And that's without shipping and tax. Of course. Um, I have been working on a Siris for my mom. Um, and they are us letter 8.5 by Elevens. Um, one thing to note with this it you can put in however many pages you have on that will spit out the spine measurements. You have all of your options interior, you know, exterior, etcetera, and the cover. The covers are full color andan. You can decide what you want for the insides from there. So for this, I'm going to go do my demo through Lulu. Just because I end up using this one the most. Uh, and you know, like I said, the processes of pretty much the same they're all you know, what you see is what you get whenever you're in that design stage. 3. Uploading your pages as a word document: all right. Now that we've decided who we want to use for a publisher, weaken, go ahead and just jump in this first little bit is just a little bit of in the side. If you do not have the creative suite you can using Lulu published through word. So if that's the case ah, the size that I was using for her work is 8.5 by 11 on. I have the file up here, and I'm just going to scoot down just to see how many pages that there are in their 59 pages. Eso She would need to have a little bit more for this one, because for the standard you have to have it. You can see the minimum of 84 but under premium you can see our options are, you know, a little bit, lest someone to switch her over into the premium for her book in half. By 11 it's black and white. It's going to be perfect bound, and it's paperback. I already forgot the pages, so there's 59 pages, and I'm going to show you how to do this. Within word a t least for the set up on, then I'm going to jump in to in design. Um, you can if you have no design experience. Go ahead, make this book. You know, you would print this out as a pdf, so let's go ahead. I'm going, Teoh, save it out as a pdf a group. Go ahead, save. So I'll show you the process for this and again. You know, they do have options in believe both of them, for sure, Lulu, that you could even make the cover. You know, using their cover wizard is what I believe they call it. I'm just gonna make this available only to me. Family history. All right. I'm gonna get my info in here. Uh, if you're designing a book for your friend or a photo book for yourself and you, of course, have you know the rights and everything. Go ahead and you can use that 1st 1 we can send Lulu, Amazon, Barnes and Noble. One more. This one gives you your eye spn number. Um, when I'm in the proof stage or if I just want to make a portfolio for myself for my students do for job interviews, I just make it available only to me. And then, you know, no one sees it basically, so no one sees it. Everyone sees it. So if you want to compare and contrast between the two, those are your options of going. Teoh, choose that file. Make sure your gram in that pdf upload, and this can take a little bit of time. So just be patient during the uploading stages. It depends on how many pages, of course on and how much it gets bogged down within that system. All right. And then whenever you get to this stage, it says your file has been added to your book successfully. It shows your project files here and go ahead and make a print ready file. This is basically giving you a proof for this stage. I personally do not download it cause it's just going to give you a pdf of your pdf. But if you want, you know, go for it. And then that way you can triple check if you want to make sure you've done everything right, Um, it says please download in review. So if you want download for this, I'm comfortable incompetent, you know, with my pdf ING skills and I'm just gonna go for that. All right? So whenever you get to the cover part, you can use their cover wizard. Or, as you can see here are advanced one piece cover designer. And I'm gonna show that in the next section, Um, this for some reason, this section here, this new one doesn't work in safari, and it doesn't load in Firefox. So what you can do is just click on use the old cover designer. Obviously, it's not is probably sexy as they want it to be, but it gets the job done nonetheless. All right, so there are some pre made options here and again. This is for those of you who you know, may not have a design background. You can see you can bring in pictures. You can add the text that do you want, show the author. Um, there are some, you know, of course, limitations. Within this, you can change some of these things around or, you know, make your own cover. But if you don't have any access to that, this is an option for you. Other skimp. That's a photo shop option. And there's Canberra that is a in design slash Page layout. Um, online design software, I guess, would be the wording for that on. And you will probably be able to create something through that. Um, that being said, I am a fan, obviously of the one cover where you design and control everything yourself. So you're spacings right in your positionings. Right? But these options may not be available to you so that you do, you know, you know that you have other, you know, variations that you can design on if you don't have the adobe creative suite. Um, I would just keep going. I would get that covered done and keep hitting safe and continue until you can actually buy your book. Your only about two steps away. You can see where we're at the review stage almost once you're covers. Done. So if you just have word, don't worry. You can still do your uploads, uh, and get your design in there, and you shouldn't have any problems with that. However, if you are a graphic designer or an artist and you have the creative suite, um and you want to get a little bit more fussy with the details. This next section is for you 4. Designing your book in InDesign: all right. Now that we saw how to do it inward, let's kick it up a notch and do our stylistic tweaking and in design So what, We're going to dio No, leave this up because we know we're going to need the U. S. Letter 8.5 by 11 perfect bound for this, and I'm gonna come back to it once we know our page numbers that we could go ahead and make our spine and our book cover the first we have to get our word document or what have you into in design. I'm going to show one version where it's just text, and then I'm going to show a version where it's just, you know, more like portfolio or photo book style so that no matter what you're working and you're going to be able to see what systems going to work best for you. All right, so for this, I you could go to file place in in design, but I like to do it more in the manual fashion way. Just so have a little bit more control over this. So I'm going to do command a on I am using a Max if you're using a PC, whenever I say apple or command, just know that it is going to be translated to control for you. All right. So everything selected you can Apple C or edit Poppy. All right, so I'm going to do all right. So I'm going to do a command A to select everything. If you're on a PC, it's going to be control A and Apple Seed to copy or edit copy whichever way works best for you. All right, so we're going to go in to in design and we're going to create a new file and it's going to be 8.5 by 11. I'm going to just put 100 pages into this. Even though I know it's not going to be 100 pages. We're gonna just delete some at the end. You need to make sure that facing pages is selected. And you also want to make sure that primary text frame is selected. Alright, some have a scroll down. Um, I'm just going to reset all these because I do have this'll formatting for quite a few of my project. So it does remember it to keep that in mind. when you make a new document, if you're not doing a book, it's going to remember the 100 pages in your margins, etcetera. All right, so right now everything for our margins is at 1/2 inch. I'm going to unclip that so that they are no longer linked and I can change them independently. If you were to look at a book, you would notice that where the pages meet the spine when you haven't open Um, you're going to need a little bit more of an inside margin there because if you have a lot of pages in your book, whenever the person's reading it, if you have everything equal, you're not going to be able to see the inside towards the spine section of the text. Well, so what you need to dio is figure out for you. You know, an inch inch and 1/2 to what's the magic number for you to give it a little bit extra air so that whenever the reader is reading it, it's going to be a lot easier for them to see. I'm gonna overexaggerate with two inches so that on the screen you can see the difference It's all right. Let's double check. We got our inside. We have our primary text frame facing pages on around 100 and I'm gonna hit, Create. All right, so now we have our document and you can see under our pages pallet all of our pages for this one, all 100 are indeed intact and the blue and selected. So that is our first page. And when I click into that text frame box, you can see the cursor is active. Here's the beautiful thing with this since we put that, you know, primary text frame box on their whenever we go to paste, which is you can go toe, you know, edit paste. Or you can do your control control or Apple V for this. Ah, which ever system works best for you. Go ahead and paste Spinney Beach ball because there's a lot of info there, and the longer that your book is, we'll take a little bit longer. Just keep that in mind and there we go. We're at our 50 pages and this is, um, on styled text. So this is just our default. What? What's my Net Minion Pro 12. So if you know you wanted to have that. Great. Keep it. But this is the time when you can go forth and have a little bit of fun with this and, you know, do those stylistic tweaks that make you more of a designer. I am going to select all Let's play around a little bit now, since this is more of a book format, as in the reading book format, you're going to need to keep readers of viewing aesthetics in mind with that, And the serif typefaces are bit better. For that, I am going to stick with you know, the serif typefaces. If you're doing your portfolio or a photo book, feel free to do the more modern Sand Saref. But if you're going to have something that has readability, make sure you keep that mind. All right, so let's just sort of scroll through. I'm just gonna pick up a couple of them. I'm not a fan of that one. I don't like sort of stumpy looking to me. Just find one that you feel works best for whatever your project is. I'm not going to be labour this in this video because whenever I dio get into what I lovingly called the fiddly bits. This can take me a little bit longer, and that would be akin to watching grass grow. So I'm not going to sort of have you suffer through that. But, you know, I will go through a couple of them. Maybe I feel like That's nice. Do I like the 12 point Funt? Do I want to take it down just a little bit? Maybe 11 and I feel like the leading and that's bit scrunchie. So especially for these books, because this is more of a research base book for our content. And, you know, maybe, you know you want something, has a little bit more room in it. So if the people wanted to make notes whenever I'm just using Apple A just like we didn't word to select everything, Um, if people were reading it and wanted to take notes, maybe you would want a little bit more space in between each of those lines. All right, so let's to see where at page wise. So we were around the fifties to just change in that it just added a couple more pages to that s so that's why I like to have those extra little sort of buffer pages in there, so that when I'm completely finished, I can go in and delete the extras. But I know I can, you know, if I want to keep taking the spacing up more. Maybe I want to be really, really crazy spaced. Um, then, you know, you know, you have that wiggle room in your pages. Let's see how many more. That added, We got up to 84 with just those couple bumps up. So keep that in mind whenever you're working that one of your last stages is going to be turned this down again. Just getting rid of those extra little bits. All right? I do want a nice amount of space, but not an absurd amount of space. Another thing you might wish to continue is, uh, pagination. So do you want page numbers within this? So let's go ahead and just going to scroll up so that we can sort of see everything. Um, and I was going to write down its Stanwood 11 point. I like to keep a notebook when I work so that I can refer to that for whatever style that I'm using. You can also set up a paragraph style if you so desire. Um, I'm just gonna select everything. I'm sort of paranoid when I work, and whenever I am going to do a style of some sort, I keep it selected so that I know that it's grabbing from the right info. So I'm going to go under styles and grab paragraph styles, so you can either just manually write it in, or you can actually make a new paragraph style with this. Create a new style. There we go. If we like that, not hit on Dio, then it's going to remember, and I'm going to go in and just edit this so that we can see it. You can see that it's the fan Would 11 at the leading of 19 points if I had anything with the tabs or invents or special characters, etcetera. It's all going to be remembered there, so if I wanted to change this to 12 point, it would actually remember it and change it throughout your document. The paragraph styles are super useful. So for this for a page number, I am going to go ahead and use our paragraph style. What you need to do is up here in our pages. You're going to see it says a master. And on all of our little corners we can see the letter A in the corner. And what this is denoting is that the style of your pages are based upon the master with the letter A So if I want it Teoh, make a new master. I'm going to toss it and then see the prefixes be. And there it is Hibi Master A master Seamaster etcetera So however many you're going to need for your project. So maybe for a master, this is your actual pages. That is going to be the reading content. But the B If you're, say, doing a text book, this could be your 1st 2 pages of the chapter are always a special color and a giant jump out chapter number with the pull quote or something like that. Um And then if you're having 15 chapters in that book, then you don't have to really reinvent the wheel every time. Just I'll just scroll down so you can see it. If you wanted those to be the different colors, there's RB. So a and then B. This is a really is a sort of akin to our paragraph styles, but it's sort of a page styling, and I'm gonna undo that because I don't want that down there at all. You can see whenever it's blue highlighted here. That means you are actually working on that master style. And if you want to see your content on the page, is, you have to make sure that you have this blue highlight down here within your pages, menu or palate. Sorry. So I want to add page numbers to the A master, So I need to double click onto the A masters, and you can see it's getting a little preview, just like up there, left side, the right side. And if you want to double check, just make sure that you know you're seeing that blue highlight there. All right, let's go ahead. I'm just gonna make a text box towards the bottom, and I am going to go in to type insert special character markers. Current page number. All right, you can see what happens is a ladder A. It's sort of like a default mark code if you want to think of it that way. Um, it's set Teoh, Minion Pro, which we aren't too excited about. You can see that was our basic paragraph style. But we set up our paragraph style are ready to be our fan would. And 11. So you could see how so much easier that was instead of going in and, you know, typing it in changing the number, changing the leading etcetera. So that you, you know, with one button can do all of that. I am gonna do one thing different from mine. I'm gonna be fancy shmancy, and I'm gonna drop mine in the middle and then under our text frame options, which is Appleby or command beef. This is sort of where all the magic happens for your text frame. If you wanted to add more columns, this is where you do this. If you want to do in sets, this is where you do those. I'm gonna worry about the vertical justification. Right now it's on the top. So where it's at, Location Wise is going to run into that last line of text. And I don't want that happening. So I'm gonna go ahead and change that to the center. And if you want to see it, make sure that preview is checked. Um, and then go ahead and hit, OK? And it will remember the preview for your next time. All right, so we have it centered. It's not gonna be bumped into that text. I'm feeling happy with that. Let's just make it all nice and perfectly centered there. I'm gonna hold down my option key, and I cook hole and drag it over. Why reinvent the wheel? We've already just build it once. Why build it twice? So just duplicate it over there, and then you're gonna have page numbers on the left and the right side of the pages. Double click on your number one. You see it. Number one to three, and it's going to scroll down 16 17. This is just such a nice system to get instant numbering within your project on. And if you add pages, it automatically dumps it into that. So maybe for my book, you know, I don't want it to be starting on page one. Um, I can go ahead and insert a page before that. Just do an insert before Paige and actually cancel So you can see that again. I'm going to right click. And I did that pretty fast. I apologize to that insert page, and we want to put one before page one, and it's going to be using the A master. That's fine. All right, I'm gonna go ahead and click. OK, so now our info starts on this page. All right, So what? I'm doing a book. This would be the first page that you open. So maybe this is going to be the title page, but I don't personally feel comfortable with having it start on the left hand side. So I am going to right click one more time on page one. And this time I'm going to put a after page one so I can have my title a blank, and then it's going to start on the right side. This feels a whole lot better for me and my design style. All right, so one thing to consider, we can see we have page numbers on these, and maybe we don't want that a nondescript hit, the wrong thing. All right, so maybe we don't want that. So if you do not want the page numbers on the blank and the title page. Go ahead and right click, and you're gonna have toe override all master page items. Now, this box is able to be edited, and I'm just gonna hit my delete on the keyboard. And I'm gonna do the same thing on page two. I'm going to right click override all master page items, and then I'm just going to delete page to with this you have a little bit of flexibility of having control over your style, so that makes life a little bit easier for you. All right, so let's go ahead. I'm just gonna make a text box. Uh, and now just type it in quick. All right. Once you have it typed in, you guessed it. I'm going to select all I'm gonna make it our paragraph style. So it is automatically in the same style of the rest of our book and using my shift command and right above my period, you can see the greater than symbol. And beside that is the comet with the less than symbol greater than will make it larger, less than will make it smaller. So I like to use this whenever I'm working. So I have a little bit more design sort of flexibility while I'm working. Make helps me see it a little bit quicker instead going up here and, you know, bump, bump bump one by one or using their preset ones. Because, let's be honest, most of us thes presets are not going to be working for us. So again, you can do that. Or up and down arrow up here in your type size. Either way works. So again, ship command period shift command pharma, and I'm going Teoh, go ahead and center up over here on our page, and I'm gonna select both of these boxes. And that's why I kept this one in here. While both of these air selected you can use your lying tools, I want to align it to the center and I want to align it to the vertical center. So this tax box itself is perfectly centered within this, and you guessed that are text frame options and I'm going to click centered. Ah. Then that way I know I'm gonna hit w do not hit. Commit command. W because it close it w gives you just a nice preview. So that you can see how it looks on your page. And let's just scroll down to these and my w and that high and see your invisibles. All right, we're gonna want to go ahead and save. And before we get to our final PdF Export, we want to find that last page that we had content on. Uhm, I'm going, Teoh. I'm actually gonna leave it at the 65. I think it's going to dump an extra one in because it likes even pages. But let's just ignore that and dump all those extras just by clicking the trash can once they're selected, I'll do that one more time so you can see it. I'm going to slept. Scroll down, Hold down my shift key. Make sure they're all selected An hit, our trash. Can I say again? Because now we know we have it with the pages and its proper size go to file an export going to be a pdf print. If you had interactive links in it, which you wouldn't for this print project, you could go ahead and add that here. But here this adobe pdf print and go ahead and hit save and I leave it at the high quality print specifications whenever it's in that stage. All right, So what we need to dio is right down in that handy dandy notebook 65 because that's how many pages were going to have to deal with. So I go back in here, cantor lulu dot com. And and remember for this we had page minimums. So we have to go the premium paperback so that we don't have to worry about that as much. US. Letter 8/2 by 11 54 No. 65 That's why you write it down pages and before I click make this book. I click on this to reveal this info, and you can take a screenshot shift control or command or on a Mac. I'm sorry, Shift command for and then that you haven't screenshot it and that staves on your desktop. But I you guessed that I'm gonna be writing it in my notebook. The spine whips 0.146 Cover size itself is 17 point four by 11.25 and this is all in inches and then the spine begins at 8.625 So we're gonna get to that in just a few minutes. Let's go ahead and get this portion of it started. It will whenever at Lulu saves your progress. So if you need to close out for a while and then come back, you don't have to worry about that. You can always go in and revise your product and start where you stopped. Let's click. Make this book. Make sure you log in. All right. So you can put in your title and your author on this is mostly for you in your organizational system. Um, it also show up when some of the searches that way, if you are, you know, a poet or a writer and author, and you have created all of your content and it's yours. So therefore, the copyrights belong to you, and you want to sell it and you want to make money on it, then, yes, go ahead and have this one selected. Um, the Celo, Lulu, Amazon, Barnes and Noble and Mawr option is going to give you one extra step where you get an I s bien number for the Library of Congress. Um, well, which documents? You know, a plus B. So I SBM for reselling and as well, it puts it in the Library of Congress. Um, if you're going to resell that, you are going to need to have this stuff. If it's just a personal project or your own portfolio or what have you, you can just make it available to you, and you can see this line here. You can change this later If you do decide to sell. Um, if you're just in the learning stage, I'm recommending just make it available only to you. That way you can get familiar with the process. Um, get your proof was sort of what I view these as. Use it as a proof look for any typos or errors or, you know, things that you missed in the creating stage. And then when you're happy with it, go in and do the, you know, changed the cell on Lulu and it's just a one click button thing. Um, if you do that and then you update it later, you do have to put the I S P n barcode on the inside cover. With that blank section we have, it would be akin to the table of contents and You also of course, have to put it on the back cover as well. So that people, if you do have it say at a local bookshop or Barnes and Noble that they are able to dip their barcode thinking with it on and have you in their system With that, um, Lulu gives you this for free, so that's a nice little bonus for that. So, in the early stages, I like I said, recommend this And then once you proof that, go ahead and change it to the cell. We're gonna hit, save and continue. We're going, Teoh, upload our file. So let's go ahead and choose that file. Choose upload. Now, depending on the length of your book, this part can take a good chunk of time. So this book isn't massively large, so I don't anticipate it Taking too long to upload. If you have a couple 100 pages, it might take a while. So do not refresh. Just be patient. Go grab some tea, your coffee, and come back and and then you know it will be finished at some point. But you're going to get this green bar where it says your file has been added to your book successfully and then go ahead and click Print. Ready file. Here's the beautiful thing with Lulu. Um, and blurb. Of course, you can't get to that stage of some things around. Your size is wrong or something isn't matching what you've put in a beginning, it will be read there. And it will say, you know, your size is wrong file error, etcetera. So it won't let you progress with an error. So this one says we have detected and flattened. Transparency is in your file. I'm OK with that. Um, sometimes that happens within that pdf things stage. So let's go ahead. Click download just so that we can make sure we're a okay with things. And I'm feeling okay with that. All right, save and continue. That's nice. Just get a quick little glimpse of it so that we can keep going from there, right? Same thing is before you can use the old cover designer if you are not the designer Lee sort. But I think if you're this section you are the designer Lee sorts. Let's go ahead and use our advanced one piece cover designer. All right. When that loads it's going to give you the same commands of sizes that we had at the beginning with our upload options. So let's pop back into in design. We're gonna make our cover. 5. Book Cover Design and Upload: the right time for that cover. For this I'm going Teoh, show the layout within in design and then just quick photo manipulation within Photoshopped . I do have a class on book cover designs. So if you're still curious, I want to learn more about that. Ah, I build but covers through further shop over in that one. For now, our cover was 17 0.4. And if you forget, Remember, we had our screenshot so we can leave that up. Also, that we took whenever we were designing our spine, our pages And as well, all of that info is here also. Um, just double checking. Looks like it's 0.39 night. I am going to the 0.399 just so I know everything is a OK. It can round up if it wants I 11 0.25 Remember, it remembers the 100 pages, so I'm gonna take it back toe one, and then we'll go ahead and re link everything back to the half of an inch of a margin because it will remember from our last time. And then that way chances are your next documents not going 200 pages with the weird margin eso. Then that way it resets it for you as well. All right, so there's our cover. Remember its back cover spine front cover, because whenever it's getting print, it's going to be wrapped around it. Our first instinct is usually the exact opposite. Everyone in my classes, even after explain it, does still tend to do front cover spine back cover. So remember, it is Grab the bump. No, let's just grab the pencil back, cover spine and then front cover. Who should just grab the text tool for that one. So let's go ahead and do are designed for that. I grabbed one of my photos that I took from the area that this ancestor book is being written about so we could just do some minor changes. If we want, we could go through our auto tone, our auto contrast. So far, so good auto color. I think I actually like the more light blue there. Um, I'm actually stick with that because I like the sort of solar flare here cause it's gonna go on the spine, so you'll have to make that aesthetic decision. You know, if you're using a photo now, I'm using a photo that I took. If this And here's why. I like to do this because it's my photo. It's the book. If I sell it and I'm making profit on it, it's all mine. Uh, don't use something that you've gilling Don't. First off, don't you like off of Google? Uh, if you are going to buy it from someplace, say, like, creative market, Look at their licensing and you are when you're going to need to get the extended licence for that or design it yourself. So I like to have complete control over my projects so that when I do sell and resell it, um, I have nothing to worry about. This is mine. I took it. You know, there's no issues there, so just take copyright into consideration. Were artists and designer make your own? If you're a pattern maker, make your own pattern. If your photographer doing a photo book, choose your own photo. Um, you know, just make it yours. In that way, when you are reselling it and making a profit off of it, you have absolutely nothing to worry about. Um, how gonna Just by a curves. So I do want to boost the mid tones just a little bit. I wanted to be washed out just a little bit. And, you know, maybe I want to make it a little bit less dense, so I'm gonna add a new layer. And let's just put a nice you know, Tanis, watch over and let's just turn that opacity down just a little bit. So that way, if we're going to do something with our text, um, the two aren't going to interfere at all. I just wanna look what screen looks like quickly with it. All right. I feel like I don't know, I feel like something is happening there. So let's go ahead and save as book cover. And I am leaving is the PST. Because if I do change my mind on that last stage, if I just want it to be, you know, this versus that, that I could just dio you know, the change and updates automatically within in design. All right, so let's just go in. I'll delete. Oh! Oh, my God would have got real quick. All right, let's zoom out so we can see what's going on. We're going to need our text for image frame so that we can put our photo in there file place once you have that built and but cover. All right, double click. And I'm just gonna zoom out. I said you can see what's going on. Our photos since I took it. Nice shooting. Raul is going to be gigantic compared, you know, to our actual page. That's good. That means it's going to be nice and high. Rez, Hold down the shift. I'm gonna hold down my option key that way. Whatever I resize, it's going to resize it from the midpoint. Always hold your shift key down. Make sure you don't flip it accidentally. Always hold that shift key down. Uh, so that you keep everything in proportion, the human I will notice, even if it's a little bit out of sync. There's just something about it that our eyes are just gonna like what's quite not quite right with that? I was gonna bump it and just a little bit more, and I think I'm going to give it just a little bit more sky s so that I can put my text here and not have too much, um, conflict whenever it comes to our contrast against the background. All right, I'm feeling okay ish with this. So far, so good. I am gonna zoom. And because this is the stage everyone panics over when it comes to in design is when we put images in here and you're probably going, um that looks nothing like the photo that you just had up that does not look like that. So let's zoom in here and I have my guides on, so let's turn it in a little bit. There we go. You know, that's that's a pretty clear photo. Let's go back into here and go boy. They look nothing alike under view display performance. It's currently set to typical, um, if its own fast it turns to a grey box. This is, let's say, let's go back to that textbook. If you're designing a textbook in your textbook is I don't know 1000 pages. You can't have, you know, six images on each page times 1000 pages and expect your computer to run smoothly. So in design is that pagination? That page layout program, like work, used to be once upon a time. So if you remember Cork, um, you would Oftentimes you'd know your images in here, but you would just see the gray boxes. This is that once upon a time of cork s o what it does for typical, it just sort of links back. But it's not dumping in all that content, so it doesn't bog you now and high. You can see how it shipped it. Just that little bit is going to give you the highest version you know, possible. Let's do a preview so we can see. So it is going to do a little bit of roster rising on the screen. But it's not touching the quality of the file. And it's so important to remember that because everyone always freaks out that staged enough we got at that stage. Just know it's doing, you know, a quick generalization of it. So you get the idea of what's going on without bogging your system down. All right, I'm happy with the photo rant over about our, you know, resolution on our screen, our resolutions. Fine. It's just giving us a quick preview. I'll just leave it here cause for one page, it's fine to have it on the high display. It's not gonna bog you down. If you have a couple 100 pages with lots of photos, don't keep it on high. It's going to really overheat your system. All right, So what we need is here. It says our spine begins at 8.625 This is one of my quick tricks that I sort of developed. I don't know what other people do. I'm going to completely honest. But let's just be honest. None of us are really like I love math. Let me set rulers up and figure out where 8.625 is. I like to make a box with my wit being You guessed it 8.6 to 5 and I don't really care about the heights. Oops. Magic mice. And then I bumped that over to our left side of the page wherever it snaps to pull out. And then he's gonna get rid of the photo shop Echo, Pull out your guide to right there. That's where your spine is gonna start. And then you're whipped for it is 0.149 inches. You guessed it. We're going to go in here. Zero point 149 hit. Enter slide it over. So the left aligns there, bring out your next guide and go ahead and hit. Delete. So our guides, and now showing us exactly where our spine is. So basically, our rectangle tool did the math forest. You can't go wrong with that. Um, I'm not going to fill in too many of the details with this, but let's just go ahead. Elections is what she calls them. Um, And I'm just gonna lay this in and finish. She hasn't bumped over a little bit every All right, so let's just get the hierarchy in. You make this one just a little bit bigger. I'm not going to go into the uber details of thes, but that way you can see the whole, you know, through the end of Lulu process. All right, stop this down here. One of his guys set up the guide so I could make sure everything is all lovely like that. But over here, All right, if this is this is a thin book. So the spine is going to be a little bit, you know, wonky because it is so skinny and narrow. But if you wanted to get your text in here. Also, I just duplicate the one text box and go to your free transform wishes your E hold down the shift key and spin it. That's really important to use the free transform because of some of these programs, especially with illustrator. The text slides within the box, and that's frustrating. So I just get in the habit of all of these applications. Just using the free transform for this stage makes life a little bit easier. So our smallest comfortable is usually around eight points and I'm just going Teoh no, go in here and we're gonna do like we did in the other one. We're gonna make the box the size of the spine and then we're going to text train option are Appleby and put it in the center. Now, when it is small like that, you can see it doesn't quite know what to Dio. So I didn't do and undo. I'll just manually adjust it from there, all right? And let's just add the rest of it and this puts happen there. So that way it's all nice and orderly. If you had your publishing like I have since I do a lot of publishing for friends and family. I have my little sort of moniker there, and you could put your our code of your I s bien there also. So it's going to depend on which system you're going to be using. Let's just get it a little bit more air in there so that whenever it folds over in the spine, it's going to translate nicely. And there's what looks like on the preview. Let's save it and pdf it file export as a PdF. Now, if this was something I was actually going to go and send a print, I was like I said before, just It's been a lot more time on this, but I want to get you through the whole process, Um, and not have to worry about sitting here watching me, you know, stylistic tweak for two hours. All right, so we're in this one piece book cover. There's all the info. Choose that file cover spell design. Wrong. Let's ignore that. Upload. This part also can take quite a while also, and since I was using it raw photo, um, it might take a good chunk of time. So again, do not worry when it's in this stage. Just go have a nice cup of tea or enjoy some music. All right, so whenever it's done, it's going to give you this preview. Uh, it's going to show everything within these markup points. It's showing that safety margin everything looks so far like it's a Okay, so let's go ahead and hit, save and continue. And I'm gonna just say it looks OK from this point of view, because we're going to see another preview whenever we get to the next stage or Teoh beyond this, that's going to show you breakdown of the front and back and spine and sort of chunks. And that's that's more where I do the proof of that stage. All right, when that's done, go ahead and hit, save and continue. And this is the part Rice say. I look at this and go OK, Texas in Texas and backs fine, etcetera. If you're all happy, you would hit, save and finish. This is where you can change that. They're also you can order your proof. Copy the e book. Don't really worry about because you're to have a pdf, come and, you know, just use your pdf Go ahead, order your print. Copy your proof. Copy. So you can see this 1 66 pages. Prints 3 to 5 days. Um, I can't remember. Quite what they're shipping is at this stage. So 3 38 for this one. Um, And then if you buy copies and sell it affairs of festivals or local shops And you know what your mark up on profits going to be from there, It just puts the control publishing mawr in your hands rather than the big corporations. You have a lot of fun with this, and it's nice and flexible, and you can give your book, uh, the style that you want. 6. Self Publishing Project: all right. Time for the class project. If you guessed that you're going to be creating a book, you guessed correctly. So for this project, you're going to have to come up with the subject matter. So if you're a photographer, maybe you want to do a photo book so that you can showcase your work V A graphic designer. Maybe you're going to put together a portfolio are a sort of small, and I have one here giveaway that I give the clients so that they can see a sampling of my work. It's more of a magazine format via graphic novelist. Go ahead, create that graphic novel. If a friend or family or you have a book that you've written, ask them if you have permission to use their text to make an actual work of fiction. So the options are really endless. It's only going to be limited by you know, what are you not interested in? So if you're not interested in it, you're not going to do it. So create what you want, create something that's going to benefit you, and that way you can have a product at the end of the day. Once you get it printed that you're really quite happy with. All right, so once you've settled on your subject matter, it's time to get it into in design. So if you're going to have text flow, that text, if you're going to have images, get those images and there put the page numbers on it. Style your text, style your paragraphs and get it laid out in a way that you are happy and content with. Once you have that finished, pdf it and then you can start on your cover. Get to cover Finished, you guessed it. Pdf that as well. If you don't have the funds to get it printed, you can stop right there. So you have laid out a book and you get that experience. If you have the finances to go ahead and get one print, go ahead and get it printed. I promise you there's not going to be a more exciting piece of mail that you're going to get with your art than that contains your own book that you've created. So you guess that. Go ahead, get it printed and share the photos. Share the photos of your book. Share a photo of the process in our course projects below, so that we can see what you're working on. Self Publishing Conclusion: Okay, So in this class, you learned about how to get a book from idea to fruition. So what if it's in the word file? And how do you paginated and get it into a pdf and from there to get the PdF on the Lulu or blurred wherever it is you're going to be printing by going through this whole process? It's so valuable is a designer so that, you know, and potential clients or bosses, etcetera. If you're building this for portfolio piece, they know you can take a project from start to finish and get it professionally printed. You have basically covered every hurdle of print process in one project, and it's really nice to see your project an actual print format.
