About This Class
Welcome to woodburning! In this class you will learn how to create a small piece of woodburned art for your home. It could be utilitarian like a potholder or a set of coasters, or simply something beautiful to hang on the wall. We will go through the steps of choosing the right tools, selecting an ideal working surface, and drawing and burning a design. You will emerge from the class with a beautiful piece of work, and a valuable creative skill to apply to a diverse array of projects.
Meet Your Teacher
Hi there! My name is Chamisa, I am an illustrator, designer and fine artist with a love for stories, nature and that blurry line between reality and imagination. My work is characterized by its dreamy landscapes and whimsical characters. I work out of my studio in Portland, Oregon, USA.
For the latest creative experiments from works-in-progress to finished art, follow along on instagram.
I love drawing and painting in many different mediums, including pen and ink, watercolor, gouache, and digital. My latest personal project is a 5-minute daily iPad drawing.

Designing and Creating Your Own Woodburning
We will start with a smooth wooden surface and end with a gorgeous, original woodburned product.
Steps in this process:
- Selecting your woodburner and wooden surface.
- Practicing with the woodburner and getting a feel for the materials.
- Creating your original design. What do you want to make? Will this piece of art be functional or decorative?
- Keep your drawing/design on the simpler side, so you can focus more on the technique of woodburning.
- Transferring your design onto your wooden surface.
- Woodburning the design, and finishing touches.
Throughout the course, you can upload your idea sketches and photos of your work in progress to the project gallery, and share your experience and newfound knowledge with your classmates.
Deliverables:
- At least one sketch of your design before you transfer it onto your wooden surface
- A clear photo of your beautiful woodburned product.
- Optional: a photo of your woodburned piece in use (i.e. coaster supporting a coffee mug, or hand-lettered sign hanging on a wall). It's so nice to see these beautiful functional objects in people's homes!
Resources:
- The Creative Woodburner Value Pen: a great beginner tool.
- The Colwood Cub: a more advanced tool if you're interested in delving more seriously into woodburning.
- Michaels sells great little wooden shapes or live-edge wooden objects that are perfect for introductory woodburning.
- Graphite transfer paper
- For those of you who would rather not draw, I've included attached example designs that you're welcome to work from! Simply print it out and trace onto your wooden surface.
