2. Introduction to Course: Hello and welcome to the concise study skills course we are gonna be going through actionable things you can do to increase your productivity on Learn Maurin less time. So first, let me ask you a question. Have you ever found that you want to study? You want to work from home, be you just lacking the focus. You start, you do about 5 10 minutes, maybe half an hour. And then everything just plummets downhill from them. Well, we can fix that. I'm gonna take you through 11 things you can do to improve your productivity when working from home or working wherever we're going to change how your brain consciously and subconsciously this perceives environmental cues. We are going to make you incredibly productive. So first up, this is a concise course. You don't want to spend three hours learning about studying That's not productive to this is a 30 minute course at most. We want to get you studying straightaway. So listen to this course all in one go. What I would recommend is don't implement everything at the same time. Pick one or two rules to start with, implement them, see how they work and then implement another rule afterwards. This isn't about trying to go gung ho straight away. Do everything we want consistency. We want to build good habits and create a good environment for you to study in. So in this course, there are four modules. We're going to talk about how you can create an effective study environment. We're gonna talk about effective study habits that would be very valuable for you to implement. We're going to talk about how you can retain information, what to do to help yourself retain information. And secondly, how do you make yourself functioning in the most productive and efficient way possible? Toe how you look after yourself. So without further ado, this is the concise course that we're gonna get straight on and look at the 11 rules, too. Studying
3. Rule 1 - go to the library (if you can): first up, let's create your study environment. So for many of you you'll be aware of a library. You'll have one at school. You'll have one university, and they'll be the local one in your town or county. So rule one is go to the library now, consciously and subconsciously, a library is associate ID with studying with quiet with reading. So it is a place that people go to focus on a book, for example. This also makes them a very good place for studying. Now if you don't have the chance to go to a library or if they're closed, or as I'm recording this during the covert locked down, we in England are still locked down and libraries are all closed. The next few rules are going to be how you can create an effective work at home environment , that effective study environment from your bedroom from your office, potentially from your dining room table. But I wouldn't recommend your dining room table, so let's move on to rule, too.
4. Rule 2 - turn your desk away from relaxation areas: Rule two is to turn your desk away from your bed from your sofa and any place that is about relaxing. This is again about changing the environmental cues. If you are facing your bed, your bed is for relax ation. It's where you sleep. It's where you read. It's where you relax. Maybe what? Your movie. Same with your. So far, it's where you chill out with your family or your friends or your housemates. If you're facing the thing that in your brain consciously and subconsciously, is about, relax ation, you will not study effectively, so have a rearrange of your room. If your desk is in your room, perhaps you're a university or living at home. For example, if we're looking at this space here, if your bed is over there, make sure your desk is here or here so that you can have your back to your bed. You don't want to face your bed. If you are studying in your living room, try not to study at the dining room table because the dining room table is about community time. Social time is about relaxing and enjoying yourself. Now, if you do have to study at your dining room table. Rule number three. Using a study lamp will help you to go over to Rule three in a minute to learn about that. But if you're in your living room, have you desk in a corner or away from your So for on your TV, make sure you're back is facing the TV and you're facing away from the study area, the socializing area.
5. Rule 3 - use a study lamp: So Rule three Rule three is have a study lump. And actually, my solemn is here providing the light for my recording. But also, my recording is my work time. So my study lamp is on and it's telling me subliminally, unconsciously, that light is on. It is time for studying. So how does the study lamp work? And this is one of the most effective ones. If you implement any rule out of all of these rules, I highly, highly, highly recommend. This is the 1st 1 you start with. Its worked with my students with special needs really younger, like a years old, all the way up to my 16 to 18 year old. It was one of the most effective roof study tools that I have ever found. I wish I had known it at university. I think I would have been a lot more productive, but better find it later than never. So a study lamp, a study, a number is just a simple lamp that you use only for studying. You turn it on when you start studying, you turn it off when you finish studying in. This includes breaks because, like you would find in a library. If you could focus there really well is because consciously on a new some consciously the environmental Q is the study, so you can create that with a study lump now a study lamp. It's also incredibly effective because it's portable. So I actually have a little led clip on study lamp, which means I can take it with me traveling. I can take it with me to my friend's house is my family's houses if I'm traveling, but I need to work there, and I know that when I turn that lamp on my mind because I have trained, it doesn't work immediately. Bits about getting your brain into the habit off. Turn it on when we're studying, we turn it off when we're not studying a Mormon taking a break. So I highly recommend getting a study and let's go on to rule four just before you go. Thanks for watching. I hope you're finding these videos of valuable and informative. If you are, I'd love it if you left a review, please let me know. We thought leave a rating on Tell me what you thought about the course
6. Rule 4 - get rid of distractions: So we'll four is get rid of distracting noises on distracting things, anything that is distracting. So it's all about focus. Creating study environment is about channeling your focus and provide you with the areas. Do that, so this means turn off your phone. Turn off your email notifications if there are other people around. Don't sell in a place where people are socializing because it will distract you. If you need to study in a place that has distractions, turn your back away from them. So the same with Measure your Dax. He's facing away from your back from serving any places about socializing. So there are people are being extracted. Turn away from them. Also, put in your headphones on Turn on Cem Alfa Wave Music or I am your music because this will help you focus your mind. Ideally, you don't want lyrics because waas distracted if you're okay with lyrics. Fine, go for it. I find lyrics in music. I also find classical music distracting because it's too interesting. It gets my brain working in the background, so I prefer outweighed music because it is, it just helped. My focus is something to do with your brain weighs just helped you. So you find a study music at? Actually, there is one. I'll put a little picture here for us to meet studying et al. You get on Google, play on I store called the Sony's Funny Enough, and that has led off away music. Also, you can use noise canceling headphones you have no one's capsule have using. It will take the top light of the noise out if you don't have those. Cats have both really find always distracting a really cheap way to do that east to get a pair off ear defenders. So are here are very, very friend. Is they are the headphones looking things that workmen you on building sites you can buy from Amazon Really cheap there, about £15. So that's what $20 roughly if you're America but you get ready. Keep me hardware store no expensive and put your headphones inside. 38 has on any. We'll get rid of all pretty much All the noise around you were
7. Rule 5 - divide your time into 20-30min tasks: So the second step you've created your effective study environment. The next is to develop effective study habits. This lead us on to rule five. Have you ever found that you have so much to study? And then you say I'm going to study with six hours and then you do the first half an hour and then off. That just goes straight down here. Well, the reason why that's problem is because studying for sick that was it actually an unreasonable expectation of yourself because our brains actually can only properly focused . Really? Working brains is about 3 to 4 hours of brain work a day. That is optimum. I'm probably maximum for the average person that absolutely find what you want is quality studying, not quantity of studying. You want to actually be able to remember the information so an effective study habit on along with your study lump. This is one of the things I really recommend you doing is divided studying into 20 to 30 minute tasks at maximum. Do you don't go over 20 to 30 minutes because you do not want to train your brain to the punished when studying, you want to reward your brain for staying on. You want to use the energy it's got As soon as you start to feel tired. Stop studying because you do not want to reinforce that habit. So defied your studying into 20 to 30 minute task. I recommend. If you find it difficult to study, do a 20 minute task. If a 20 minute task is too much to a 15 minute task, so is some of my students. They can't concentrate for more than 15 minutes. So you a 15 minute task and then we have a couple minutes break and then, without a couple minutes break. Weaken have regained off. Focus again. So study in 20 to 30 minute tasks that is ruled five onto Rule six. What do you think of the course so far? If you're finding it valuable or interesting on, if you're finding it especially useful, please leave a rating in review in the course page
8. Rule 6 - reward your studying with a break: Rule six is to take regular study breaks. So once you've done your 20 to 30 minutes, you need to reward yourself with a break. The reward is go get a drink. Go call your friend. Look at your phone onto your text messages. Um, go talk to your mom or your dad or your house may have a conversation, But tell yourself this break right here is to reward myself for the 20 minutes off. Good studying I've done so. It's about training your brain that that 20 minutes was great and then you'll start to release endorphins and oh, I did a good job. I've got a break and it will start to reinforce the behavior that you've done well, which will help you retain information. Your no punishing your brain. This is a really, really powerful tool, really, really powerful and once even implemented your study lamp and you're 20 to 30 minutes. If you find you're 20 you're doing one of my students had she was studying for 20 minutes, 25 minutes and she's doing really well. She used to study lamp, but then she found it really difficult to go back after the break and I said, OK, so what you need to do is study for your 1st 2025 minutes. Take a five minute break. That's all you need. Tell yourself this is my reward for my 1st 2025 minutes, and I said, OK, do one more. You don't need it. Study for six hours. I evening do one more 20 to 25 minutes studying and then give yourself a bigger reward so that bigger award could be having a bubble bath. It could be watching a movie. It could be watching an episode of your favorite Siri's. It could be playing a video game, but remember to tell yourself this is my big reward for doing my studying on that again will help improve the habit in your brain. It will positively reinforce rather than negatively reinforce, because habits could be negatively reinforces. Well, there's positively reinforced. We want to positively reinforce your study habits. This will make your brain more effective on with your study lamp. It will focus you. The more you practice, the more focused you will get
9. Rule 7 - Intend to learn: Rule seven. So rule Stephan is about intentional learning. You need to sit down and say I intend to learn this now. Psychologists and researchers haven't figured out exactly why this works, but it works. So this morning, actually, yesterday I decided Monday is recording this tutorial. I am going to do this other times when I was studying at university, usually it was crunch time. Maybe I'd left until the last minute, but I was like, right, I can't leave this off anymore. I am going to study this today. I'm with that focus saying I intend to do it. You have focusing your brain. You're telling yourself you're almost psyching yourself up to do it. And then with your effective study habits with your effective environment, your study lamp, your 20 to 30 minutes you're like this is what I'm gonna do. It. It helps you almost go in tunnel vision and it says, Okay, mind. This is what we're doing today, and it keeps you present in the moment so that you can both consciously absorb the material , work on the material and then let it go into a sub conscious because this is what we want when we're learning, we want to transfer our short term memory into our long term memory because then we're actually retaining the information. So intentional learning is really put important. Say to yourself, when you start studying, I intend to learn this today.
10. Rule 8 - Learn concepts: So now we've got our study habits. We're gonna look at how we can actually retain information now, information. We're gonna talk about rule eight. Okay, So Rule Eight is about learning concepts. So to be able to retain information, you need to connect it to what you already know. If it is information that's just floating around in the ether, it is very difficult to remember because it has no bearing on your life in any way. So let's think about concepts are concepts are principles, definitions categories. They are things you can learn that relate to everything else. So in this, we can think about, um, for example, let's think about so I use a degree in religious studies. I did a theology degree, So when I was learning at University, we had to learn a lot of material. So if we're thinking about Christianity, we would think about perhaps the idea of rebirth. So this idea of rebirth in Christianity is a concept and related to that I've got. While we've got the death and resurrection of Christ, What What about other things? We've got Old Testament, New Testament. What are the ideas to do with it? What do people think about that? What does it mean to them? So when you're learning a concept you want to think about, why is this concept useful? Toe? What to you? How can you I understand it. The more you can build into what you already know, you can remember it. So if you're learning some new material, think about what? How can you relate it to what you already know? What do you understand? Where does that fit in? Try and find the relationships between the two information so that you can find a way to understand it. You can also explain out loud talk about it, brainstorm it, write it down on a piece of paper to think about the relationships between on the links between the different concepts or the different information you're learning.
11. Rule 9 - Use mnemonic devices to learn facts: Okay, Rule nine Rule nine is about learning facts. So fracture dates, times numbers, all of those things. It's not concepts. So these are the things I always used to hate remembering. It's like the paps, the spelling that is very factual based learning in school. They teach you to memorize it. But sometimes memorization doesn't always help just blank memorization. So Rule nine is used pneumonic devices to help you remember things. So we have three types in pneumonic devices that are useful on, but I have found useful to remember. So the first is an acronym. So an acronym is a word made up of letters that represent something else. So let's think. In England, we have the NHS. NHS is an acronym for the National Health Service. We also have NATO is not Crim. Perhaps you could make up your own acronyms. There's one for mass. When I was in school, you'd have foil, which is first out in a last, which is to describe which order you do your algebra multiplication. So that is an acronym. The other type of pneumonic device is an across stick. So when a cross stick is a little rhyme or ditty. You're saying that helps you remember something. So one of the really famous ones is how to remember the number of days in a month. So 30 days hath September, April, June and November. All the rest have 31 except February has 28 or 29 on a leap year. So I say this to myself all the time to figure out how many days there are in a month. If I'm doing calendar stuff, I'm figuring out what the date is next week. If we're getting to the end of the month, it is the only way I know how to remember the days off that how many days there are in a month so you can create this type of a cross stick toe. Help you remember something. The third is interacting images. Now, this is actually my favorite on one of the ones I have found the most useful in my studying so interacting images about building an image to remember Ah, word, an idea, something, a factual piece of information. So I use this a lot when I was in university because I was studying New Testament Greek in my first year of University is part of my theology degree on. We had to learn from scratch the language to do translation, and we had to learn a lot off vocabulary. So to actually be able to remember this new vocabulary in this new alphabet in this new language, my lecture said, create stories. So one of the stories I created, remember to remember the words is there is a word called Lam Banner, which means to take or receive. But Lamba no sounds like lamb on a bun, so you have a have lamb on a bond like a lamb burger. You take or receive lamb burger, take or receive lamb bana. There's another word called top loss, so top loss means place, but top lost kind of sounds like top and off, and you take your top off in a place. It's completely random. Who's the ones I remember, And I learned a New Testament Greek in 12 4013. So this is quite a while ago now, but I still remember those words. If you need to remember a lot of words very quickly, this is a very good way, and then you can just keep practicing keep practicing. Sometimes the weirder and perhaps naughtier the story to go with the wealthy, interrupt the image, the easier be to remember it. So those are pneumonic devices that you can use to help you retain information on to remember facts.
12. Rule 10 - Sleep enough: okay module for how to help you. How to keep yourself healthy. So you need to keep your brain efficient and productive. The way to keep your friend Andi body and mind efficient to be able to retain all this information to implement good habits, Doctor, feel like doing studying is rule 10. First get enough sleep. I cannot stress this enough. It is scientifically proving that if you don't have enough sleep, your brain will not work properly. You will be slow, your lee sluggish, and you won't be able to retain information. Remember what they say about driving. Never drive tired. It's because you can't concentrate. Lack of sleep reduces concentration. You need concentration to be able to study and retain information. So number one what Rule 10 and the first part for looking after self is get enough sleep. So to be able to get good fleet, make sure you arrange your life to have your hours that you need. Don't stay up all night playing video. Don't sell all my drinking or going out and partying. No, when you have studying to do, it's not effective ons. You will make your brain slower if you want to take your sleep quality to the next level, black out your room, get blackout blinds and put them into the windows so that you have a pitch black room. There is scientific evidence to prove that you your body actually functions and sleeps better, has a better quality sleep. When you have a blacked out room, it helps your brain rest. Your sleep is where your brain actually continues to learn, and it processes the information you've put in it during the day. It's like the organizational time fuel brain your body. Your skin can pick up light. So even if there is just if you were rumors fairly dark. But there's a sliver of light even if you've got an eye mask on, even if you've got covers over your head. If you stick your hand or foot out, your skin will pick up the light, and that will change your sleep pattern. You will not be in deep sleep again if your skin has picked up the light. So if you want to take your sleep to a better quality blackout, your room you can buy blackout thermal blackout material on eBay and Amazon or from your local fabric store
13. Rule 11 - Eat enough: Rule 11 eat enough. Studying is hard work. You need to actually give your body fuel to study so don't have loads of sugar. It's just going to give you really high spikes and really low lows. You need consistent energy level, so I have a high protein meal. Have some eggs. If you can eat peanut butter, have a peanut butter sandwich. Eat some meat. Start your day off by eating something that is going to fuel your body consistently. You need protein, no carbs, no sugar protein. Have something really healthy that will feed you. And for like, five hours or three hours. Because then when you're not, When If the stomachs growling, you're not gonna focus on your studying. You need to feed your brain, so make sure you eat properly.
14. Thanks for watching!: So that is it for the concise course in how to study effectively. I hope you enjoy this course. Remember, you don't have to implement all these rules thes adjust the most effective things I have found to increase your productivity increase the ability to retain information on to get more done in less time. Studying. You always have a lot to study. If you're working at home, you need to focus. So I hope you found this interesting. I hope you found it useful. Remember, just implement one or two. I highly recommend implementing the study lamp rule first that he's one of the most useful and studying in 20 to 30 minutes, you could implement the rules in section one in Montreuil, one by reaches rearranging your room. That's also an easy one to start with. But the study lamp and 20 to 30 minutes learning is the most useful. So thanks for watching. If you have found it useful, I'd love to hear what you found the most useful. Are you implementing this study lamp? Are you doing intentional learning? Are you doing a rear range of your room or your office so that you couldn't get better studying. I'd love to hear, so please leave a review. Leave me a comment. Tell me how it's gone. What you found the most useful on. I wish you the best of luck. Actually, I'm not gonna wish you luck with your studying.
