1. Introduction: Hello and welcome. My name is Victor. Vegan Diamond Freedoms in graphic designer. In this class, I'll share a few principles about type and text that will help you to create a better layout with more likable text. If you have troubles with simple documents that contain tax, please grab a coffee and stay with me for 50 minutes. By the end of this short courses, I promise that you will have a better understanding off working with copy, layout arrangement and much more. This class first created mainly for beginners, but I hope everyone will find something interesting in it.
2. Overview, eye movement & body text: dirt off typography is about aesthetics and leg ability. The purpose, if it is to create a content that catches the attention and is easily understandable, and that's it. To understand how it works, we need to take a look at how our brain is processing information instead of reading characters. An average person's brain res words in the fraction of a second, and the eye jumps from one birth to another, just looking for sentence. That's making sense. If you just blew out the paragraph and replace the text we tricked and was, you will see what I mean. So these are the content books, which needs to be processed by your brain if you decrease or increase leading spacing orc earning to a value this too large or too small. The I must make unusual movements, and the information will be harder to process. Same goes to fun Size four paragraphs. Paragraphs with two large phones will be harder to read because you're used to a way of processing information. An average body copy size is usually between eight and 11 points, depending on the size of the layout, But it's very different in case of business cards or large prints. Business cards can work with six or eight points. For example, if you don't know exactly what you're doing, just leave your spacing turning or leading While he was in the default settings, Those values were calculated for likable result by professionals. For some more airy text just increased the leading with one or two points and see if you like it, decrease the leading and you will see where you end up with a squash paragraph, practice turning and letter spacing in a similar way. At the beginning stage, we'll only have a large amount of content with body text. We should be fine for a book, but that's not going to work on a one pager or an advert. When you need to catch attention, you need to break monitor knee using a few simple principles.
3. Basic principles. Layout, arrangement, repeat & contrast: basic principles, layout and proportion ING text that has a logical connection in terms off content needs to be arranged to groups. If you place multiple elements close to each other, David work as a logical unit. By creating such units, you will have a clear, structured content. Create order in terms of headers. Least paragraphs. Image captures. Think from top left to bottom right on the page. Use this principle for addresses, titles, descriptions, for example. Instead of this, try to do something like this arrangement. I suggest to lay out your copy intentionally. Every element on your page should be connected to another item. Using this principle, we'll create a nice composition. Copy can be aligned to left, center and right. It can be either justified and fully justified. Now you may think that central text catches the attention the most s receipt on a movie poster, for example. But if you check out a few type of refers work, you will see that they don't agree with that due to the movement of the I give A as it processes information, it's best to use left online text Now why is that is because you're I will find it better. If it doesn't need to look where the next line start, it will know where to find the beginning. Off the next line. Let's check a center Tyto. Do you see those areas? If we think about this piece of copy as an image, these areas were created horse in the whole local fit. That's making it harder to read. The same goes for justified text. Justified text usually needs the creation of pipelines, which break the text so you will end up looking for logical connections. Same as you would do it by using a central text I suggest to use left. I'm text as often as possible. Under into the margin you may use, centered or write a line text for headers or justified text. Try using left. I'm I'm First. Keep in mind that investing culture people read from left to right, so right aligned text and Isis might be unexpected. So there is nothing that stands besides centered and justified text. No, that is not true. Central text can work well as Heather's or content on bomb pagers, and justify text is great for books and magazines. But in terms off leg ability they are just one step behind the others, another advises. Unless you want to create an unusual layout, try to keep everything inside your margins. Repeat. If you set up a hierarchy, or if you've used a few enhancements or graphic elements, try to repeat them through your design. Do not invent a new design element or a new fund for a title with in the middle of the copy . When you've already set up another. In the beginning, you may repeat in dense enhancements, shapes, space, his weights, funds, fun sizes or layout elements. Repeating will make the look off the composition unified. Contrast. The key to work with this principle is to avoid using very similar elements on the same page. When some units have a different meaning or proposed try to make them look very different from the other unit. This will attract the attention the most a ways off, creating contrast how we do that. First, using phones and typefaces use harmony or contrast. Instead of creating conflict, we will get back to that soon size. Make fun size is very different from another. Try using go the ratio to calculate sizes. Wait, try using front weights that are very different. Light and black fund. For example, Enhancements use elements in areas off your designs, such as background tones. Underlines etcetera direction, the writer lines separating. We'll break the monotony off left on text, but use it wisely. Color. If you have the opportunity to work with color, try using color theory to create contrast. Used analog or complementary close try invert. Take a look at color that had to be that come use images or illustrations to break the monetary off. The copy. The contents should be connected to the graphic element. Okay, and this is the point where we get back to fonts and typefaces. Front is a term that has its roots in the letter press age. These air collections off matter type forms which were needed to design and print text. An eight point government is a different formed than a 10 points. Grammond italic, for example, Attack faces a collection of phones which were used enhancements such as Italy, core board, harmony, conflict and contrast. Harmony is when you only used one typeface of one page. Okay, conflict is when you use two or more similar typefaces within one page. Contrast is when you combine very different typefaces. Now this applies to both phone sizes and tie face classifications. Okay to show you how to work with it, we need to learn about fund classifications, but you're going to simplify it. A serif is a small line attached to the end of the stroke. In a letter. It can be traced back to the Roman letter carvings. It probably came to existence due to a practical reason. It was easier to carve letters in marble using small closing lies. Sarah riffs were used later in calligraphy, basically for the same reason. Fun fact. But it's better for longer texts. Saref connect to the baseline, and they lead your eye through a longer copy. These are a few examples. For example, Girl Montes North Styles Saref Times New Roman is a baroque or transitional saref. Muthoni, or Died on uses extreme contrast between language. So it's a died on Clarin. Don Rockwell uses thick sarees which are vertical ized, said these type off serif was created for posters in the 19th century, So these are slab serif typefaces and then our typefaces, which try to emulate lapidary inscriptions such as Fritz Quadratic now these air graphics carries the next last is sensory for grotesque. These were designed in the early 20th century. First, by avoiding using salaries, more geometric forms came to existence. These very considered out, off ordinary by the late 19th century or early 20th century and were described as a grotesque and grotesque means out of ordinary. Now they're standard grotesque phones such as Helvetica or Knew Scott IQ. Now there square sense typefaces, which use dramatic squaring such as Euro style. There are geometric typefaces in which geometric shapes were used for creating their letters, such as Food, Air or Bauhaus, and they're humanistic typefaces, which are proportion based on Roman letters. So think, for example, gear sons or fruit sugar. The next class is script typefaces, and in this class everything is hand written. So their former script, which use joint letters. They're Kala graphic script, which are mimicking calligraphy. There are black letter script typefaces, which are reminiscent off manuscript lettering, and there are casual script typefaces, which are quickly written or brush drone. And there is another crest, which is decorative, and this category is huge, and it contains unusual other shapes from characters mimicking digital numbers. Two kids throwing you. Think off everything. Now you have an overview about phone classifications. Let's get back to harmony, conflict and contrast once again. Okay, so harmony is venue only. Use one typeface on one page. Conflict is when you use two or more similar typefaces within one page. And contrast is when you combine very different die faces. If you the grammond on one page grave, it's Italy can board versions that would be a front harmony. It's safe. But it can be very boring if you combine the Gurman with a times new Roman botany or a fit squad rata that we a result in conflict due to their similarities. So they are all necessary phones, you see, and it's quite annoying to look at the conflicted front combination. Now. Contrast will be achieved when you mix a sensitive with a serif, a script with a san serif or a decorative with the Saref, but they need to be significantly different
4. More & more text: more and more text. Here are a few ideas to make your copy look more interesting and a few Quiroz use Indians by tradition. Indians. Are you starting from the second or third paragraph by using them? You were separate your program from the previews on Use Indians that take up the space off at least two or feet, letters least, or taps. If you use list or taps, you can align the text that comes after the bullet that makes it look better and more aligned. For supplements, he was Maurin dents and Taps. Try repeating the spaces between tips. Design using accidents. There is a technique which is called accident. See, that means Is that you, Aaron? Some elements on the layered by making them look like they were created by an accident. Now this is something that requires years to get it right, but it was practicing blurring. If you have the possibility, try adding a blur effect to your copy to see if there are unneeded spacings. The rule off three lines. If you have three lines that increase in terms off week in a row, you should avoid adding 1/4 break. The next line or break the other sub of If you create an ever increasing paragraph with you will end up with a big hole in the copy. These put effect now. This is basically similar to creating contrast. Sport effect is a technique where you place an item on your layers so significantly different that it catches the attention straightaway. Support effect can be achieved by using image, color or line of text, optical, kern ing or legalization by the fort. Different earnings are calculated for a good result, but that's impossible. With all the possible characters that you use swiftly seal our spaces between data letters or the letters don't follow up the shape off each other. You should adjust the turning manually to create an overall, better looking bird. Use enhancements, but not too much. You may apply italic Boyd or underline when some words, but you should only two or free off these unless you work on some scientific or technical text that requires it. Only use enhancements when you have reason to use them by the fourth try to use no more than three, and that applies to oil phones and enhancements. On one page May columns for body text if you have a lot of space for body text Custer Using columns on the page, check orphans Try to avoid orphans both on bottom, off the textbooks and on the top. Instead, try to keep these lines together. You may use job caps, but try to use no more than three within one page. Think off using drop caps in unusual ways, such as using a different phone or just move without off your content area a little bit. Optical margin alignment in design has this little option. When you turn it on, it will align the left edges off each line by looking for the optical edges off the letters . It results in a more likable paragraph. Avoid using or caps for body. War caps are not designed for body text. The eye needs all those building blocks that are in the lower case letters toe. Identify them. Use grid systems. Okay, this is last in this list, but it's very important. So to create a consistent look for your layer will try to set up and use special guidelines called greets. So your lines were being lying with each other. This will improve the look off your designs very much youth grades, especially when you work with columns, you may try creating horizontal greets to
5. Conclusion & homework: Okay, that was a very quick, But this is just the tip of the iceberg. Typography is a craft that needs many, many years off learning and practice, but s. You see, there are many ways to create an interesting layered from a simple copy using a few key principles. And I've included my main tax in the class projects for you. If you have the time trying to improve them using your preferred application, use the techniques that I've shown and put them here. And we will discuss if you have any questions. I hope you have learned a few things and using these principles were happy to create better looking content. Take care. Bye.
