1. Introduction.: Hey, my name is Collin Michael, and in this course you'll
learn iMovie for iPhone, for Complete Guide
for beginners. Now, I've been creating
content on line 48 plus years, so I know a thing or two
when it comes to editing. And we're going to cover
the basics that way you can create a YouTube video, possibly make
short-form content, or if you're just
looking to do a vlog or make a fun family video
to share with friends. You're going to learn
the exact basics, everything to do with
iMovie so you can get started doing this right
now as a beginner. Now, all you need for this
course is just your iPhone. We're not going to get fancy. We're going to cover
the basics of trimming, how to add text and music, and just anything you
might need to know to create your first project. So if you're ready to
start editing with iMovie, this is the course for you and I hope to see you
on the other side.
2. Creating a Project and Adding Videos: Now for this iMovie guide, I will be doing this in
the landscape mode just so that way it takes up more
of the screen and it's a lot easier for you
to see the tutorial. But iMovie does work in both
landscape and portrait. And what we're gonna
do is we're going to create a project
and we're going to focus on adding our footage and our photos into the timeline. So we're gonna do is
just going to slide up to the start new
projects screen here. And we're going to click on
movie because it allows us to make a video from scratch
and add different elements. So I'm going to click on that. And then in the top-left corner, I'm going to click the
Back button to media. Now this will give
me the full range of options to look at my videos, photos, albums, as
well as backgrounds. If I want to use a
background image and have different things
over the top of it. But we're just going to start
with videos and photos. I'm actually going to
click on album though, because I have a, an album here where
it's videos to edit a bit of footage here that we can use
to edit our project. So what I'm going to do, all you have to do is
really click on one of those videos and I'll
let you select it. You can click on
those just like that. And you can also click on
them again to de-select them. If you want to preview
a video real quick, you can hold your finger down. And it will let you
actually preview the video real quick
just to make sure it's the right-click
you want to add. You can let go and then select it so you can get a little
quick preview there. And then at the bottom it
will say create movie. And we can click that. I'll put all the
footage together and we can start editing. Now on the top here we
have the preview screen to let us see what our end
product is gonna look like. And then underrate is
the timeline where it shows all the video clips
kinda put together. I can use my finger and
I can scroll through the timeline and look at all
the different video clips. I can also use my fingers
to pinch, to zoom in, to get a closer look and
do very specific edits. And I can also pinch to
zoom out so I can see all my video clips
in the timeline. Now you'll also notice on the far left side there
is a plus button. This actually allows
us to add more footage to our timeline if
we forgot something, maybe we want to
add some photos, which I actually do
for this example. So I'm just gonna
click the plus icon, takes us right back here, two videos, photos and albums. And just to note here,
if you scroll down, there is also a voice-over
option and in audio option. So if I click on audio in here, you can find soundtracks
which is built-in music that you can
use in your footage. If I go back, there's my
music which will take you to your actual Apple Music. And then you also
have sound effects, which will be fun sound effects you can put into your video. So that is here in that
underneath that plus button. But I'm going to add
a photo as well as another video to this project. Alright, and I've got
that all added now. Now you'll also probably notice
that in-between each clip is this weird like symbol here. And you'll notice it causes
a fade effect That's actually built-in
transitions from iMovie. So transition is the thing that happens between
one clip to another. And for this, it dissolves and fades to the next clip and
they're automatically added. It's just what iMovie does. If you actually click on those, you can move it to the none. And then do that
for each of these. Just so that way you don't
have any transitions added. If you want there
to be cool effects here, they're all here. So for example, there's
this slide effect. So that'll actually
cause the video to slide on in-between the two clips. There's a few
different ones here, and you can also set the
on the side here how long those transitions
are if it takes two seconds to switch
to the next video, usually I have my
transitions on none. I'm not the biggest fan of
transitions in-between videos, but you do have
that option there. But for now, I'm going to
set those all to none. And with that being said,
let's get into some of the settings that are
found within iMovie.
3. Project Settings.: Alright, so let's get
into some of the settings that can be found within iMovie. On the far right side, you'll
see the settings icon. If we click on that, we'll get all of our
project settings and we'll start at the top
and work our way down. Now on the top, you
have a project filter, which will apply a filter
to the entire project. I'm not usually recommended, but that is an
option that you can choose here within
iMovie and it'll make that filter on every
single video in your project. Next, we have something
called theme. Now with themes,
you'll notice that some of these are travel. Some of them are like this
news theme on the far right. Basically what this is is if
you choose a certain theme, There's different things you can customize in your
video related to that. So for example, we'll probably see later in the news theme, if you have that set up, it'll actually do news
text effects and allows you to add news transitions. Or if you do the travel
one, there'll be travel, text effects and
different things like that that you can use. So that is optional. You don't have to pick a
theme if you don't want to. But it does give you some
extra customization. Like if you're making
a travel video, you didn't get some
cool effects to do for your travel video if
you're using that theme. So that's how you change it. You change it in the
settings section. And then you have some other
settings here you have themes soundtrack which you don't need to
really worry about. You can just get your music from that music section that
we just talked about. Then you can also control
whether you want the video to and from black or
fade out from black. So very self-explanatory. The video, you will begin with
the fade-in or leave with a fade into black,
which is optional. Then you also have
speed changes pitch, which is already turned on. So if you speed up a video, it'll keep your voice the
same versus they are. Your voice is getting
really high pitched or slow down towards deep. It'll try to maintain your
proper tone of your voice. So that's basically the
settings of iMovie, those options there
main thing you want to pay attention to is
that theme section. But with that, let's get into actually trimming our clips.
4. Rearrange and Trimming Clips.: Alright, so let's
get into rearranging and trimming our video clips. So if we want to
rearrange a clip, well you have to do is hold down your finger on that clip. So if I hold my
finger down on it, you'll see I've picked it
up and can drag it around. I can slide it all the way over to the far right's
and it'll move it. I can slide it all the
way to the far left. And it'll drag it around
the timeline here. And then wherever
I want it to go, I just let go and it will
have placed it there. So now this one is here and this money
counting one is there. So I can easily grab these
and drag them around. Now for trimming a clip, it's best to be zoomed
in on your timeline. So I'm actually going to do
that in a pinch to zoom in with my fingers for trimming my video clip just so I can get a better site
of what I'm doing. And then for true and your clip, you're just going to
click on the video that you want to trim. So I'm going to do that now. And you'll notice
that there's really thick yellow bar is on the far left and the far right
of this video clip. And basically what
we can do is grab that and drag with our finger. And you can see I've
made the video shorter. I can make it longer. And you'll also notice
on the previous screen, I'm seeing right where the
video is going to begin. So let's say I wanted
to start right when he's typing
on the calculator, I can just drag with
my finger right there. Let go and it will start there. And maybe on the other
side of this clip, I want to end on his
face zoomed in here. So I can click on this
and from the right side I'll grab that giant
yellow thick bar in, drag it over to where it's
zoomed in on his face. Like go, there we go. I have now trimmed
my video clip. Now let's say you want
to trim something out of the middle of a video clip. Just by clicking on the video, you can't trim something out of the middle just by grabbing
the left or right. Thicker yellow bars
here. How do you do it? Well, what you'll wanna do is make sure the
video is selected and then also make sure you
are under the scissors icon. You can then do is scroll over to the spot where
you want to trim. So I might want to trim out
him counting money here. I'm going to click on the video
under that scissors icon, you'll notice on
the far right side there is a split button. What I can do is click
that and when it does is cut the video in half. So this is its own
separate clip, and this part is also
its own separate clips. So here I can trim from
the left and the right, and here I can now trim
from the left and right. So now I can drag this bar
here and scroll over and get rid of this
counting money part just to where it shows his head. Now, when I click Play is on the calculator
and then it goes right to his head and I've cut something out of the
middle of the video clip. Now, also with that video clip selected in under
the scissors icon, you'll see there's a
delete button as well. So if I click that, that'll
delete the video clip. And if for some reason we didn't actually want to
delete that clip, you'll notice that
there is a back button right here on the screen. If I click this, it will actually reverse
any actions I've made. So if I keep clicking, this will go back far enough where I've reversed the split
down the middle and we have our entire video clip back. So that reverse icon,
really important, just in case you make a mistake, you want to go back to
something you originally did. You can click that back
button and it'll do that. Alright, so now that you
understand the basics of rearranging clips and
trimming them how you want. Let's get into some more advanced settings in
the next section.
5. Speed Up and Slowmo.: Alright, so let's talk about speed options when it
comes to your video. So if I click on the video here, we've already talked about being either the scissors icon. So let's go over
to the next one, which is the speed icon. Now, under this icon, we can actually control
the speed of our video. So if I want, I could turn this knob all
the way to the right. And now the video is playing
at two times the speed. So now when we click play here, he's counting that money
really, really quick. He is super-fast
on the calculator. This is amazing. And also if we
click on the video, we can turn it the other way. And now it's 1 eighth of the original speed
and we click Play. And now it's really, really slowed down so you can adjust the speed
just like that. Alright, let's keep going
on with this tutorial.
6. Audio Settings.: Alright, so let's talk
about audio settings. So if we click on a
video that has audio, right now we're on
the speed icon, as you can see on
that far left side, we're just gonna click
over to the next one, which is volume. And in here we can actually adjust the volume of our video. So if something is too
loud or too quiet, we can always turn down the
volume to make it quieter. Click Play and listen to it. Or you can make the
volume even louder if you want to turn it up and
be able to hear something. Now, the volume
key actually works for audio effects as
well as soundtracks. So if you add music or sound
effect to your project, you can click the volume
icon and be able to turn it up and turn it down and be
able to use it that way. And that can be really
useful, especially for music. You don't want your music to
be overpowering your video, especially if someone's
talking or you don't want an effect to Blair super
loud or quiet part. So you can really
customize the volume there and change the main track, and then also changed
the audio track and really adjust those to
make them work perfectly. So definitely useful. Just wanted to make
you aware that even though it seems
like a basic thing, It's really helpful
so that way you can get your videos to
sound perfectly. But with that being said, let's go over to the
next section here, we're going to talk
about text effects.
7. How To Add and Customize Text.: Alright, continuing on
with our video effects, we've talked about
trimming speed. We've talked about sound. The next thing on
this little list of settings for a video
is the text effects. So when we click on this, you can see that there's
a whole bunch of different texts effects that
we can use for our videos. Each with their own
little animations in things that we can click on. Now, for example, here we'll just click on one of
these texts defects. And what we can
actually do is just tap lightly on texts and then we can click the Edit button there
and we can type our text. Let's just do test text. There we go, and there we go. We've got test text
on the screen. And then maybe we can
do is with our finger, we can actually grab this text and move it anywhere we want. So if you want in the corner, if you want it just
at the bottom, on the top, we can move
it anywhere we want. We can also pinch to make it
bigger or make it smaller. So you can also control
the size of the text. And then on the far left side, you'll see the capital
and lowercase a. If you click that,
it will allow you to change the font of your text. I'm just going to click
the X button though. You can also click on Colors, and this will let you change
the color of the text. You can also go to spectrum
and sliders and all that. And then on the
three dots there, we can click on those. Here. We can change things
like uppercase if we want to add a sound
effect for the text, and also if we want
the text to stay on the screen for the
full, entire clip. So right now, the textual, if we actually go back here and click Play just to show you, and I click Play, the
text comes on screen. And then in a few seconds it
just ends up disappearing. If we were to click on this and the three dots and
make it the full clip duration detects would stay on the screen
the entire time. So that is optional. You can put that in there, but most of the time
probably don't want that. Then this style option, it'll give you the option
if you want to put it in the lower thirds, which doesn't make sense
because we can already grab the text and move
it to the lower third section if
we really want to. So it doesn't really matter. Now the other part that is
important is your theme. We were talking about this. So if I open up Settings again in the far
right side here, I want to, I'm going
to show you this. I'm going to change the theme to news and I'm gonna click done. And now when I
scroll to the far, far right, you'll
notice this news icon. If I click on this, It's actually going to do. And I'm actually just
going to exit out of the text settings just
so we can see it. You'll notice now there's
this cool news effect that now appears on the screen, which is really, really cool. We're actually editing the
text, blocks it there. But we can also do here. And this is where
clicking those three dots might make sense. So I'll click on those three
dots and I'll click style. And now there's a few options in this style right now
around the middle style. But if I click this opening
one and I go back here, now it's an opening,
cool text effects. I'm going to close the
text settings here. As you can see now, it has this cool
test text and it does this cool news
effect on the video. Not only downside with this, is it does stay on the
screen the entire time. You'll probably have to do is leave it up there for as long
as you want it on there. And then click the Split button. And that'll cause
the text disappears. So then it'll just
do a little zoom in. There won't actually be a cut. And that's an easy way
to make a short in the text effect is
you don't probably want those news effect
down there all the time. But using those cool themes, you can do really cool
things for your thing. Or if you were to do something
like a travel theme. And we were to do a text effect. We could click on that
like this opening effect. As you can see it does
this cool photograph for a travel video,
which is pretty cool. So use those Style effects
for the text effects. It adds a lot of coolness to it. But other than that, that's pretty much
the basics of tax. You can just add
them to your video. Choose a cool transition
or text effect within the text settings
here you can click through these
experiment with them. And yeah, you can
put awesome texts on your videos. We'll
keep moving on.
8. Overlays and Green Screen Effects.: Alright, so let's talk about
adding things like overlays, B-roll, and green
screen effects. So if we actually click
on the Plus button here and we go over
to our video section. I'm just going to scroll
down to the videos to edit. If I click on one of these, we'll say, we'll
click on this guy. Here. You'll notice
that now there's these three dots that appear after we've
created our project. If we click on these, it'll actually give us
a few options of adding a video on top of the video. So here it'd be a few options here we'll
start with cutaway. If I click on cutaway here, is if you click play here, it'll actually switch to this other clip that's
above the other one. And then once it
gets to the end, it'll switch back
to the other one. While that's happening,
the audio from this first original clip
will continue to play. Now if I want, I can
click on this video on top and I can trim it, does the exact same way. So if I want to make it shorter, I can do that and it'll
sit there right above. And that's great. Now I can also from here by clicking this, you'll notice there's now
this weird two rectangles. If I click that, it'll give me the other options. So one of the other
ones is split screen. So if I click that, it'll actually switch to
splitting the screen in half in showing both clips
at the exact same time. The other options here would be the cutaway, which
we already did. Picture in picture actually makes this video movable
in the timeline. So I can click the
moving button here and I can drag it around the
screen anywhere I want. This would be good
for a gaming video or a reaction video. There we go. Now it's in the corner there. And I can also click this
other option down here, which will allow me
to change the border. So if I want a white border
around it to look nice, I can have that or I
can de-select it and they'll have no border and
it'll just be a video there, the green screen, since I
don't have a green screen, I can still show it anyway. What you would do is
you would just tap on the green part of
your green-screen and make it disappear. Or you can tap on any color. So if I click his
gray sweater here, it's going to make it invisible. Or if I click on the white, since it's not a green screen, it's not doing a good job, but you'd be able to remove the background of
something if you actually had a, had a green screen there. But the overlay feature
is definitely useful, especially if you have B-roll or clip state you want to
show while you're still talking like a product
or you're showing a location you traveled to
while you're giving contacts. It's very cool thing to do. So using overlays, definitely a useful feature within iMovie.
9. Ken Burns Effect In Photos: I wanted to make
this quick section here to talk about photos just in case that's your plan to add photos to your project. What you'll notice is when
you add a photo into iMovie, that there's automatically
some movement to the photo which
is kinda weird. And what that is is
something called the Ken Burns effect, which is basically
movement in a photo. If we actually click
on this photo here, you'll notice it says
Ken Burns Enabled. If we click on that, we can disable it and the photo will just stay still and there won't be movement. You can also enable it. And what you can do is
using these arrows, you can click the spot where
you want the photo to start. And then using my fingers
I can pinch to zoom in, say I want to start on my face. Then I can click the
other arrow position where you want the photo to end. So I can actually align this
and control the movements. So now that I've sent the beginning point
and the ending point, it will actually move
that photo like that. If I want that to
be a longer effect, I can always extend my photos length just like you
would trim a video. And now it'll take a little bit longer for it to zoom out. So very cool feature there. If you want to have
movement in your photos, create a photo collage. You can do that with the
Ken Burns effect and add some nice movement to a photo. You can cause slow zoom ins, really fast zoom in and depending on however
you wanna do it. But that effect is in
here within iMovie, and I just wanted to
show you how that works.
10. Exporting Your Video.: Alright, so hopefully that was enough for you to
create your project and now it's time to
export your video. So all you'll have to do
is click the Done button. And it'll do this. You can rename your video if you want, but it doesn't
really matter. Usually the best way
whether you're uploading to social media or YouTube or
any of those videos sites, it's easier to click the
middle Export button and just save it to your gallery. That way you can send it
to wherever you want. And you're not just
uploading inside of iMovie. So if you click Save video, it'll start saving it
to your camera roll. And then from there
you can export it to whatever camera roll you, Facebook or YouTube or whatever. Then I'll give you the best
settings it can to give you some high-quality video there so that way you can
use it wherever, but that is how you
export your project. But before you take off, I would love to see the
skills that you can do. So be sure to stick around
for the class project.
11. Class Project.: Alright, so it's time to put the skills you've just learned to use with this class project. Now you've learned
the basics of iMovie. You've learned texts,
you've learned overlays, you've learned how
to trim clips. So whenever you are planning on making a video on, I wanted, I want you to do is upload
that as a class projects. So on this screen currently
if you scroll down into the description or
details of this course, there should be a Create, a project or course
projects section. There should be a
button there that will allow you to upload a video that you've
created for this project. Now, if you didn't have
anything really in mind, you're just trying
to learn editing. Just shoot a 30 to 60
seconds video that you can practice with for
making a video in iMovie, some ideas could be a product review of
something that you enjoy. Or another idea could be to show just a lovely scenery in whichever part of the
world you are in, trying to mess around with
as many effects as you can. Add music to your projects, add some cool text effects. I want to see you
utilizing those skills. So that way, by
doing those actions, you'll get everything
down in your head. So when you do end up creating a project, it'll look great. So I hope you'll do
this class project. I can't wait to see
what you guys make. And then we'll continue
on with this course.
12. Final Thoughts.: Alright, so that concludes
our course with iMovie. Now the most important
thing is to just start working your video
editing muscles. So what that means is actively making projects,
even if they're a little, even if you don't end up
showing them to anyone, just by practicing those skills, you're going to get
better by doing a class projects, you're
gonna get better. So mess around with
the text effects. If you need to, just use some videos that you've
already taken in the past, throw them in a timeline and
just start messing around, add music, do different things
with an iMovie practice. Because that practice is
going to lead to getting better and getting
more use to editing. So when you do want
to make a project wherever that is for
someone's graduation, you're doing a product
review or a YouTube video. You can just already know what you're doing and be able
to make an awesome video. So I can't wait to see what
you guys do with iMovie. I'm so glad that you stuck around and watch
this course with me. And I hope to see you in other courses here
on Skillshare.
