About This Class

In this class I’ll show you my easy, creative process for using Adobe Illustrator’s pen tool to trace over your own quick sketches and photos, as a way to create simple line drawings and silhouettes. We will then use your digital illustrations in the class project to design a greetings card; in a little over an hour I will show you why vector drawings are so useful and demystify Adobe Illustrator once and for all! It really is not as scary as it looks.

These cool digital illustrations have many great applications, such as for print design, greeting cards or even as branding elements, like icons or illustrations for your personal brand.  You will learn how easy it can be to create your own template images, by doing a simple sketch or taking a photo, and then how to use your image as a guide, to draw your own unique digital illustrations.  I’ll also show you a few ways of using colour, simple shapes and text to complete your final design.

Stay until the end of class for my top tip on how you can use your digital drawings to help you practise illustrating by hand too!

WHO IS THIS CLASS FOR?

If you’ve ever had an idea for a design and wanted to create quick, simple illustrations, but then got frustrated, because you think that you’re just not that good at drawing; don’t despair, this class is for you!

This class is perfect for both beginners with little to no prior knowledge of the software, as well as those that may have some experience.  To start you off on the right foot as a beginner, l quickly run through the basics like setting up your work space in Illustrator and I have also included short lessons that will help you understand how to use the pen tool and what you can do with it!  If you do have some experience using Illustrator, I have tried to keep the basics lessons as concise as possible, and I assure you, this will still be a super fun project with lots of useful takeaways for you too!

If you don’t have access to Adobe Illustrator, you can still complete the project by downloading a free trial here http://www.adobe.com/downloads.html/

1. Trailer/Intro: I'm not from Alibris creative. I'm an artist, designer maker and, for better or worse, a self confessed, multi passionate creative in this class up a teaching you my creative process for using Adobe Illustrator's pen tal to trace of your quick sketches and photos as a way of creating simple digital illustrations. Now, even though I've been to art college on an unqualified as a fashion designer, most of what I know about design software in particular is self talk. This is why I strongly believe that the best way to learn and develop and continuously grow your creative skills is to just jump in with both feet and give it a go. Let's be honest. Learning by doing is much more fun. So in the interest of fun and support, what you learn in the class into practice will be creating our own greetings Cards in the cross project to help you complete the project are walking three. Choosing a subject, creating or finding a template image to it from, and then how to use the pencil to create your final illustration. In addition, I'll also show you some ways of adding color, simple shapes, text so that you can complete your design. Anyone can take this class, even if you have no previous experience with software as well as the creative stuff. I'll also go through the basics like setting up your workspace and any menus, tools or short cuts you may want to use before showing you how the pencil works. And white, so useful, especially recommend this class for anyone who is always looking to learn you. Illustration techniques a swell as those that often feel frustrated and held back by their join abilities. Okay, so let's stop faffing and just get cracking. I'll see you in the next lesson where I'll be letting you know how you can get started with your class project. 2. Deciding on a Subject For Your Project Design: thin this class. I'm going to working on a few different designs in my demonstrations. This is so that I can best show you what is possible using just a few simple tools and techniques in illustrator. Well, hopefully give you more creative freedom when it comes to your own design. Actually, for you you would have to come up with one desire for your class projects. Now, a few miles down, blanket the share thought coming up with the design idea. Do not worry. This happens to me all time. You got to know that you don't even have to know exactly what your final finish designs gonna look like before you start working on it. All you really need to do is just choose a subject that could just be a simple is just using your favorite thing like a favor. Animals, for example, way of choosing the subject for your card is by asking the questions. Who is it for? And what's the purpose? He's chosen a specific person to make your card for it can decide on the subject by thinking about job that they do. Hobbies are many activities that they enjoy their likes or even that dislikes any interest that have the physical attributes on their personality. Maybe they have a silly sense of humor are there might, well, filthy jokes, And I'm not to swear and curse like a trooper. You could also think about the purpose of the card. Is it for a specific occasion, like a birthday? Or could it be to say thank you to someone or simply cheer up a friend or make someone smile? It helps. Why not try getting all your ideas down on paper? Using a quick brainstorming technique? Simple spider diagrams can be an excellent way of very quickly working through your thoughts. So once he decided on your subject, feed design. Head over to the cross project page, where you can click to start a new project and then you'll be able to let us all know what you'll be created. All you need now is a template image 3. Creating a Template Image: in this lesson, I'm going to show you the two methods that you can use to create your own template image. Hey, can see him doing a very quick, rough sketch inspired by the cat silhouette on this fire. A. Had lying around on my desk? A. No, it's not very good sketch, but it really doesn't matter, and I'll show you why. Later, when you're done, you can scan your drawing and using a scanner, or take a photo of it using a smartphone or camera on a blow to your computer. Sketch doesn't float your boat. You can create your own template image with his little is an object from around the house on the camera on your phone. Creating your own template image by taking a photo of an object gives you more creative control because you can change the viewpoint of your image by moving your body. All the subjects in this example this would create a great template image as you have the cliffs of the wet to trace around Andi. It's really obvious what the subject is. If we move the subject to look it from a different angle. We have other options this for example, would not be as good as you end up with small shapes here and here. That would be difficult to trace around also is actually now not very clear what the object is in more. So I would say the best way is just play around with it. Try out different viewpoints until you find what works for your design, so something you might be thinking. But it would just be easier to use an existing image instead of creating your. If you do choose to go down this room, I would advise that you proceed with extreme caution. There are many copyright walls that you need to be aware you could potentially get into trouble if you get this rock. Most images and all the media for that matter that you see online will be subject to copyright, so you can't just go around taking images from anywhere without the proper permission. This includes but is not limited to, images that you might find on social media, Google image, search, Pinterest or any other search engine. Our website that is not operating as a legitimate platform for distributing copyright free all licensed totals. It is important to realize that even if you purchase images or the design resource is that these will still be governed by a license agreement that will dictate certain terms. Abuse that you must abide by, never use images of other people's original artwork has template images for your designs. This'd definitely breach of copyright on just not cool in any way. Fortunately, there are some side some why, with very generous communities of contributors who do off the free stock photography images and either grown you worldwide copyright license. As in the case of one's wash dot com, Off Off Resource is under the CC zero license, which is the no copyright reserved option, and that creates common to kids. This effectively means that our copyright held in the work has been relinquished and dedicated to donate. I have included a couple of links in the class project section decides that grant you a non exclusive copyright. Why use the CC's in real license for you to investigate further, but then maybe with sites with similar terms that you could potentially use in any case, always make sure that you read and understand the license, agreed on terms abuse before deciding to use any resource is. If in doubt, contact the author of the permission, seek legal advice or do not use it. You should also be aware that there are many other types of creative Commons license that should not be confused with CC zero. All of the others will require attribution at the very least, so will not be suitable for your intended purpose. 4. Template Images: What To Look For: thin this lesson. I'll quickly explain what to look for and what to avoid as well, Showing you some examples you want to be looking for easily. Define herbal subjects with cliff silhouettes. It's a good idea to choose an image with enough detail to make the subject interesting. Made up of clean lines and simple shapes, feel free to use more than one template image to make up different elements for your final design. This could be an excellent way of making your illustrations more unique and starting to work on your own distinctive style. Theo Overall image quality isn't hugely important, but try to avoid images where the silhouettes or details are hard to make out against the background. Try to avoid abstract patterns and textures on images where the viewpoint means it's not going to be clear what the subject is. It's also worth noting that generally speaking faces and figures don't make great template images this technique, and so are not recommended. Try to avoid busy images with multiple subjects that are interconnected or overlapping as well. Subjects with too much detail where it's going to be difficult beacon choosed bits that you want to use it's important to understand that your template image just serves as a basic guide feed to easily get started with your illustration. At first glance, this burden it may not seem like a very good template, as it is quite heavily detailed. Once you have your basic shape, you can start to use some creative license to make choices and changes. It took you to make your illustration euro by deciding how much of the detail to include. Choose to edit out some of the detail to simplify a final design. Or you can even embellish your final illustration fired in in your own details and flourishes. 5. Setting Up Your Work Space in Illustrator: in this lesson, I'm going to give you a brief overview of the illustrates. A workspace. This is mostly for beginners, but also to make sure that we're on the same page on that. You only have the pallets open that you're going to need for this project. If you still don't have access to Illustrator, now is the time to download the free trial from the link in the class description. This is the illustrator words verse. It may look slightly different depending on whether you're on a PC or a Mac on which version using. But overall, most of the features should be pretty much the same or similar. First, I'm going to show you rich palates you most likely to be using in this class. He can close any unwanted pallets that are already open by clicking on the small ex icon in the corner. Some pallets may be grouped together, so you may need to click and drag a tap out of its group. Now, if you get to the window tab along the top, we can customize which palettes we want to have open for this class. I'm going to choose outboards, layers and transparency and drag these tops into a shared group. I'm also going to a pen stroke, a line info on Pathfinder, and again I'm going to group those tubs together if you like. You can also drug your group floating pellets to the edge of the screen, where they'll snap into place. You can also do the same on the left hand side with your toolbar. Next, go to the layers tub and click the icon in the top right corner, which will open up a drop down menu. Here. You just need to check. But Paste remembers, Layers is on ticked as we will be copying and pasting from one layer to another who are setting to check. We do by going toe, edit on the toolbar and then to preferences under the general tab. We just want to make sure that scale, strokes and effects is ticked. The main tools that I'll be using in the Cheeto rials. In this class, the selection tools are the black and white arrows, the mental, obviously, the shape tool, the scissors tool and type. I'll also briefly took John Rotate reflect on mesh if you hover over any of the tools in the tool bar. It will tell you the tour name on the keyboard shortcut in brackets. So if you want to select the pentacle without having to click the option in the toolbar, we know that we can just press pain. Some tools have other embedded tools to access is hidden options. For example, to select the city's tool, which will be using later, you'll need to click and hold on the eraser tool. A drop down menu will appear, showing other options, so you can now select the scissors tool if you wish. You can also tear off the embedded tools into their in floating pallets. To do this, click and hold and then moved to the very end of the palate and release. All embedded tools are visualized by a small triangle in the corner of the two. Like on. Now we need to do is open a new document by going to file and new in the dialog box. I'm going to select centimeters from the units, drop down and then you need to decide on the size of your work. I'm using 10.5 by 14.5 centimeters as exercise of the small cars that I want to create, and I know that I can print on that size, but you can choose whatever size fits your design. Whilst you're working on your design, you may find that you need to zoom in so that you can see things more clearly. The easiest way to do this is the whole control, and then use the plus and minus keys on your keyboard. If you want your campus to fit perfectly onto the screen, all you have to do is go to the view tab along the top and select fit to outboard. You can also use a few top to activate a grid or toward rulers to the edges of your workspace. If you click and drag on either of these rulers, this is a quick and easy way off, creating guidelines to manage any of the guys that you're using simply go to view on down to the guides option. So that's it. You're all set with everything you really need to know to get started 6. Pen Tool Basics: theme from part is coming up, I promise. But first we have to get to grips with using the pencil. Pencil is used to draw. Lines are connected by uncle points to start with, I'm just going to demonstrate using straight lines. So let the pencil from toolbar and click anywhere on the art board to make your first anchor point. To make her first line, we need to connect to anchor points. So we moved to another part of the outboard and click again. The grid can be helpful when drawing with pencil and illustrator, but when we are using our templates, it won't be much used to us, so I'm going to get rid of it. If you do want to create straight lines are perfectly horizontal or vertical. You can hold down the shift key on your keyboard As you create anchor points, this'll constrain your past to the nearest horizontal vertical or 45 degree angle. No matter where you click on the outboard. So far you've created an open shape with a black stroke and no Phil, as you can see from the color palette on your toolbar. If we want to make this into a closed shape. We need to get back to where we started. When you hover over the first anchor point you made with your pencil cursor, you'll notice a small circle appear next to it. This indicates that by clicking on the income pine again, you will create a closed shape. If you like. Kanak, double click on the Phil Pellet and choose a color to fill your shape with when he finished drawing any open or closed shape to the selector. Simply hold down the control key on your keyboard and click into any empty part of the outboard or workspace. You can use the black arrow to select and move the shape by clicking and dragging or clicking and then using the arrow keys on your keyboard, just like with the pencil. If you want to constrain any movement to the horizontal, vertical or 45 degree angle when using the selection tool, you can do this by holding down the shift key. Next, I'm going to use some simple shapes to show you the other tools within the pen tal and then howl at the difference between the black and white selection to allow hours First. I'm going to tear off the embedded tools for the pentacle on the shape tour from my toolbar to make everything a bit clearer, sticking with straight lines for now, I'm going to select the rectangle shape and click and drag to create rectangle on my outboard if you want the rectangle shape to appear from the center called the Out Key. As you click and drag to constrain the rectangle and create a square, hold the shift key on for a centralized square. You'll need to hold shift on out together. You can also click on the apple to create a shape of a specific size. Black hero is used to select an entire shape or path to move it around the outboard. It can also be used for scaling and rotating. Click and drag to move one shape a time or two. Move multiple shapes at once. You can click on the art board and drag to create a selection area frame. You can also do this by selecting shapes individually whilst holding down the shift case. We're now going to use the add anchor point tool toe, Add more anchor points to a shape by clicking anywhere on its path. You can also add anchor points with the ordinary pen tal by hovering over any path until the pool symbol appears in the bottom corner of the pencil cursor. You can then select the direct selection to or why, instead of selecting and moving an entire shaped like the black hair. Oh, the white arrow can be used to select a move. Individual anchor points to change shape. Either click and anchor point and drag to move it or click to select it and then use the arrow keys on your keyboard. You can select multiple anchor points at walls by the clicking on the outboard and dragging the area selection frame over the points you want to select off. I sweating each anchor point individually while holding down the shift key To remove anchor points from a shape our path, select the Delete Uncle Point tool and simply click on the anchor points you wish to delete again. You can also do we anchor points with the ordinary pencil simply by hovering over an anchor point until the minor symbol appears in the bottom corner of the pencil. Kerson, unless the uncle point you're deleting is on the end of an open path. When you Gillian Uncle Point, a new line will appear to join the anchor points before and after the deleted one, we'll be tackling curves in the next lesson. 7. Pen Tool Basics 2: Curves: tough lines of the same a straight lines in that they are joined by uncle points. The difference is that when you create a curved line, you also create a pair of curve handles that could be seen when an anchor point is selected and used to adjust the shape of the curve blind. You can see in the diagram that the curve handle of the top manages the first curve on the one at the bottom. Manages a second curve waken. Manipulate simple shapes with curves by moving ankle points, which in the same way as we did with the rectangle. When we use a shape with curves such as a circle, a swell as moving the anchor points. We can also change the shape further by using the curve handles to adjust the curves in each segment. To do this, we click and drag on the curve handle ends using the white arrow, and also he's the White Arrow to move any curved line between Uncle Points by clicking on the path and drugging civilly entire shape. Selected with the black arrow in hit backspace on your keyboard, we're now going to draw some curved lines using the Pento, click your first dunk, a point on the art board moved towards your second uncle point position and then click and drag. You can adjust the direction on the shape of the curve by moving the mouse in a circular motion, releasing when you're happy. All of these anchor points have to curve handles, creating smooth curves that flow in the same direction. If you want to continue drawing a line that is no longer selected, just go back toe. I've with the anchor points on the end of the path with mental. When you see a slash appear in the corner of the pencil cursor, you can click the anchor point again and continue where you left off in the same way as we did with straight lines. We can also constrain the curve handles to a horizontal, vertical or 45 degree angle by holding down the shift key as we dragged to adjust the curve . This could be very useful for during smooth arcs and rounded corners. If you make a mistake and want to step back at any point, hold control and said to one do in action instead of going to edit on the toolbar at the top. He can also hold control shift and said to redo actions that have been undone. The last tool embedded in the pentacle is the Converts Anchor Point Tool. If we click on the anchor point of a curved line with the Converts Anchor Point tool, the curved segment will be converted into a straight line to create a curve on any non curve Danka Point. Simply click and drag the anchor point using the convert anchor point to now. This is where curves can get confusing. So far, all the coast have created flow in the same direction as the curve handle. All of the anchor points have to handles that, when adjusted, will change the curved segments on both sides of the Uncle Point following on from this second curve. If I just click on the art board without drugging, you would expect to create a straight line. But this time a second curve automatically appears instead. If we click on the outboard again now we get our straight line. So what gives going back two steps If we want to draw a straight line after the second curves, we need to get rid of one of the curve handles. To do this, we go over the last anchor point and click on it again. A slash would appear next to the pencil cursor on the second curve handle will disappear under can now draw a straight line. We also use the same process where we want to draw two curves where the second curve doesn't flow in the same direction as the curve handle. In this example, the only way I could draw a heart shape. Whether curves do not flow smoothly into each other, it's a quick back over each anchor point to delete the second curve handle before drawing the next new curve. If we don't do this, we may have trouble manipulating our shape as adjusting. One of the curve handles will change both far curves, but by removing one of the curve handles before drawing, our second curve were able to create two curves that can be manipulated separately with their own singular curve handle. 8. Pen Tool Practice Resource: Mm. If you're a beginner to illustrator, last two westerns may have been a lot to take in. So as an extra bonus for this class, I prepared an optional pencil practice worksheet that you confined in the class. Resource is after downloading the resource onto your computer yet to file and open to get the document into your workspace. If the father opens, does not match the size of your current art board. You can correct this by clicking on the square in the art boards, pallets and then in the presets dropped down, selecting fit to outboards bounds before clicking. OK, you may then need to go to view and choose fit outboard in window pencil practice work. She is made up of exercises designed to help you have ago, but what you've learned in the last two lessons. A zwelling throwing in a few years for new tools such as duplicate, reflect and rotate. It will also help to get used to tracing over a template, ready for the next lesson. If you need to move the work she around in your workspace without de selecting anything that you've started drawing, you can hold down the space bar on your keyboard until the hand symbol appears, and then click and drag to reposition the art board in your window. This'll exercise is used to demonstrate how you can create complicated looking shapes simply by drawing one curve blind and then duplicating it. Select the first line with the black Cairo whilst holding down the old key on your keyboard until a double arrow appears. In place of the cursor, click and drag moving the new line on top of the second line on the template and release. You can then repeat this replication multiple times by holding down control and pressing D on your keyboard. Next, we'll select all of the lines we have drawn with the black arrow and choose the reflect all from the toolbar, which is embedded in the rotate tool when the cursor turns into a target symbol while you sleep with the guideline in the center of the two sets of lines and click now, hold in the old key on your keyboard. Click and drag until the new shape winds up with a template on the right hand side and release. The second shape works in much the same way that said. To use the rotate tool instead of reflect, you may need to use the Iraqis in your keyboard to nudge the Jew picket shape into the correct place after rotating in the butterfly. Example. After tracing around one side of the bottle for a shape with mental, you can use the reflect tool again to mirror the other side, creating a perfectly symmetrical shape. You can then make the two halves into one single shape by selecting the center to anchor points with the white arrow on right clicking on the art board going down to join. Repeat this step again with the top two anchor points. To make the exercise easier, I have included a screen grab version off the pencil. Practice resource. We're all the lines that you'll need to trace over have been selected so that you can see the position of the anchor points in each line as well as the curve handles. After opening the document, you'll want to lock the first layer in the layers palette by clicking on the blank square next to the eye symbol until a public appears, then create a new layer by clicking on the page symbol at the bottom of the layers palette , making sure the new layer is above the locked layer. So let the pentacle and make sure you're using a stroke with no fill in a different color to the template. Next to get to the stroke palette and set your stroke with 23 points to match the lines on the worksheet we can now trace over each line are shape trying to match them as closely as possible, taking note of how Maney curve handles and Uncle Point has. And if you think the path has been constrained or not, if this version of the word she is too easy, you can always try the hard version without the uncle points A curve, handles or guidelines, but you can open an illustrator in the exact same way, with all the boring basics out of the way in the next lesson will be starting work on your car. Designs for a class project 9. Let's Get Tracing: Using Your Template & Understanding Layers: returning to the document we created for a greetings card at the end of Lesson five is now times bringing our template images by going to file and down to place. Locating the saved image on your computer if the father opens, is to a tree our compass. Zoom out and use the black curry to select and re scale your image to a suitable size to work with. After positioning your template on your outboard, you'll want to go to the layers palette so that you can lock this layer and create a new layer above it before tracing around a template. I like to take a minute to assess if there are any paths that will be easy to create, using simple shapes rather than drawing around them from scratch with the mental, this watering can is crying out for a circle, so I'm going to show you a neat way of creating the handle shape with minimal effort. Working on your new layer, choose the ellipse shaped and click and drag holding shift on all together to constrain a circle from the center, making it roughly the right size to sit between the two curves of the handle. Make sure the circle has no filled and if you need to, you can not. Jenny of your ankle points after selecting them with the white arrow. Just the strike with until the line is about the same thickness as the entire handle. Next, you want to go toe objects on the toolbar at the top down the path and then select the outline stroke option, which will turn our stroke into a circular shape with Phil. Last step is to go to the toolbar. Quit the curved arrow in the upper right hand corner of the cool Appellate. This was what the Fillon strike options. So you again have a strike with no Phil, but now you have two circles, one inside the other, same with the watering can handle. In my template image, we can now use the scissors to to cook both circle paths where they meet the body of the watering can, using the white arrow and backspace on your keyboard to select and delete the unwanted pieces. Using the template images, a guide I trace around the rest of the outer shape of my subject, using the pentacle on a stroke width of one point you may find when you come to close your shape that you create an uncle point with two curve handles, meaning you can't adjust the last curve without also changing the 1st 1 He should be able to correct this problem by selecting the convert anchor Point tool and clicking on the curve handle. End for the first curve, making the curve handle disappear. This will disconnect the two curves, but will also to the first curve into a straight line. To fix this, click and drag the curve. Handle. End of the second anchor point using the white iro, just the curve handles and ankle points until you're happy with the silhouette or out of shape you've created. You can tell Gil the visibility of the template layer on and off, easing the I icon in the layers palette. Once you're done with your out to shape, I recommend locking the layer in creating another new layer of both work on the details. Having developed this technique through drawing fashion specs in illustrator, I tend to lean towards choosing a slightly thinner stroke with the my out of shape for my subjects. Details. The easiest way to draw any details that follow. The shape of the outer silhouette is to temporarily unlock the shape player and copy and paste selecting development. Anchor points with the white. Go to edit on the toolbar and Dr Coffee. I used to shop, cook, control and see. You'll find the shortcuts to any action on the right hand side of the toolbar in all menus . Next, go to it again and choose paste in front or control F. If you find you've pasted the new line onto the shape layer by mistake, just used coats. Walk the shape layer and then select the details. Layer and paste in front again when you've finished having in adjusting your day tiles before deleting your template image, you want to unlock all layers and separate your illustration and template to do before and after screen. Grab to upload to your class project on skill share. Save your screenshot as a picture file. Why you'll find it again later, and then you can delete your template image by clicking and dragging the layer into the bin icon at the bottom of the layers palette. As much as I love a simple template with a straight on view point where you can have a single shape is your out to still aware on your ways will typically follow this former. That's not always the case. Sometimes you'll find that the viewpoint of your subject means that it actually makes more sense to make a composite shape out of multiple separate pieces. In this example, I decided to create the handle on body and spout of the watering can as three separate shapes with white fills because of the way that they are now overlapping when the viewpoint is from slightly above. If I do want to keep all the shape elements on one layer, I can still easily change their order by clicking the small triangle in the layers palette . So I opened up the soup players and then clicking and dragging. You can usually tell from the film nails in the layers palette. Which path is which, But if you're having trouble or you have a lot of layers also Blair's you can double click on the layers name to rename it to something you recognize. The only real difference when using ways with fills for your out of shape is that you will have to temporarily move your temporary image above your shape, layer in the layers palette so that you can see it to draw your details on the top player. Alternatively, you could turn off the visibility. Deactivate fills on your shape player until after you've drawn your details when deciding whether to put something on a whole new wear or not. The main thing to bear in mind is that when toddling visibility are locking, unlocking layers, this will affect all so players within that layer. 10. I Heart Vectors: Duplicate, Effects & more Details: In this example, I decided to create the body of the bird on its fee as two separate shapes. I made this decision on the fly when I was part way through tracing the body and realized that one of the feet was hidden behind a coal. Fortunately for the purposes of this project, wonderful is enough. But I needed it to be on a separate layer so that I could use the duplicate function that I showed you in the Penta practice resource lesson. Now I can simply click and drag with the black arrow whilst holding out to duplicate the foot, moving into position roughly where the second foot would sit. Then with a bit of rotating and re scaling to make it slightly smaller, I have a perfectly acceptable working second foot. I can even add a filter this shape so that it looks like it's built of in the background because it's more in shadow. There are many creative effects that you can experiment with an illustrator. The one I use most with This technique is rough in. You can use it when you're tracing around a shape that, as wobbly, are uneven lines without having to draw in lots of anchor points that are really close together. Create the basic shape, using as few anchor points as possible. Then, if you have an area of the shape like the bottom edge of this mushroom cap that you would like to be more of a wiggly line, you can use an effect as a short cut. To do this quickly and easily, use the scissors to to cut the path of the shape. Outline into the separate parts that you want to change. Select these segments with the black arrow and then get to effect along the top and down to distort and transform. Choosing roof in from the drop down menu, make sure the preview box in the bottom left is ticked before adjusting these sliders in the dialogue box and set the points shape to smooth unless you want a line with angular corners. Top of the slide is for size in detail until you're happy with the preview of the line shape and then click. OK, I now have a more interesting with the edge to the bottom of my mushroom cap, but I still have to join the cook paths back together with the rest of the outer shake provide unexpected results when joining ankle pines. After using an effect, there's just one more step you'll need to take with effective segment selected. Simply get objects along the top and choose expand appearance. This will create new anchor points where they need to be along the roof and blinds. You will then be able to use the white Arrow to select each pair of Lanka points You want to join one of the time going to object down to path and selecting join. I also used this versatile effect on my bird's head and chin. Do birds have chins? Remember, you can also perform the joint action by right clicking on the art board like a showed you during the pencil practice resource. Listen, if you don't think the anchor points, you want to join our close enough together, you can select them both with the white arrow and then go down to average before performing the joint action. Real Beauty defectors and why that's a useful every illustration. You spend a bit of time creating, then has the potential to be used in multiple designs, especially as you can re scale Veta graphics drastically without any loss of image quality . To combine two illustrations to make any design, he can simply unlock and select all of the layers you want to use, and then click and drag the artwork onto the tab of another open document. To make life easier. You may want to goto objects in green, so the consulate, everything with one click oil, re sizing and placing the new part your design. You can always on group these elements again later to make adjustments and changes to separate pieces. Once you have parts of your new design in place, you convinced that adjusting the strike with the lines until the two illustrations look like they're balanced and belong together. You may also find if you've made one of your illustrations are what smaller from the original, but you have to simplify it by removing some of the details so that they don't become too squashed together when viewed a print size. Remember when it comes to tracing the details from your template, this is where you are most free. To use your artistic license, pick out the paths that you want to use or simply use the template as a rough guide confidence booster, our inspiration for the detail elements that you draw. In this example, the roughened bottom edge of the mushroom cap helped me to decide where I wanted my texture lines to start from. Experiment changing the appearance of your Stroh's by using the stroke palette to switch the end cap our corner shapes from square to round. You can also create more depth and variety to your lines by using different stroke weights to copy the stroke weights of any line to another. Just select the line our lines and then choose the eyedropper tool before clicking on the line. You want to copy the weights and color off. 11. Using Simple Shapes & Colour: so going back to my very quick sketch of a cartoon style cats A did earlier. You can see how you don't have to be great at drawing to use this technique with a sketch template for a simple bald effects using color. I traced around the outer shape of the tail and body, as we've done previously, but then turned into a silhouette by switching to a fill with no stroke, then created the head shape using your lips tool movie. It's into position, slightly overlapping, to talk the body to create is using closed shapes that have left the head. I used the smash shape using the Y're to adjust. Danka points duplicated the second dear, then going toe object down to transform and choosing, reflect to create a mirror image after finishing fine tuning. A useful little to for merging shapes, among other things, is the Pathfinder pallets. Select told the shapes you want to merge with the black car and then get to the Pathfinder Pallet under shape modes select the first option. Unite are now in a matter of minutes, have a single cat shape, but what's a whole lot more artistic than my original sketch. I wasn't really sure what this design was going to become until I got to this point and then the upturned tail. Given the idea, it's have something sitting on it. I love birds. So straight away I went to my saved. Bird illustration had already drawn for another design. For ready to go shape. I could turn into a bird silhouette detail a locked body and feet unlocked. I select the birds out to shape the black arrow. Changing the core pellets were filled with no strike and dragging the silhouetted shapes onto the cat document top for it Camembert resized and placed on the end of the tail. This is a really good example of how you don't have to have good design for your class. Project entirely planned out before you start to work on it. Don't be afraid to play around with color in your designs and have fun with it. If you live, you can even produce multiple different designs just by changing the color way of one illustrations. Sometimes I want to add some color to my simple line drawings, and the easiest way I found to do this is to copy and paste from the shape player. Unlock the shape player and use the white arrow to select the part, the shape that you want to color in his control and see to copy these anchor points looking the shapewear again when you finished on a new layer, I use control and F to paste my second stop shape in front and then use the pen tool to connect the two anchor points at the top and bottom of this dark, creating a closed shape. I can then go to the color palette and select to fill cooler with no stroke before going back to the layers pellets and dragging the new layer from the top down to below my out to shape layer. Um, - when I didn't call it to the cap of my mushroom, I wanted to make it look west flat on a bit more round. After a bit of experimenting, I found a quick way to do this using the mesh tool. It's easier to see the effect if I show you first on a flat shaped like a rectangle with the rectangle selected. Click somewhere on the shape with the mesh tool and an axis will appear click and drag on the center of the axis and then adjust the capacity by going to the drop down menu on the toolbar at the top are in the transparency palette. This'll will create a highlighted area emanating from the center axis that fades out, creating a shaded effect and using this to our my cold mushroom cap. You can see it now looks slightly more rounded in three D In a very subtle way. Beauty of creating separate called fills on their own layers is that you can topple the visibility on our off dependent on the use of your design. After making my mushroom more squishy looking, I was inspired to have something sitting on it on a new somewhere on my computer. Wasn't Butterfly illustrations are drawn for another project. It really is quite addictive. When she give illustrator chumps Who's that drawing and experimenting is then you'll realize just how many possibilities there are. - If you do want to add accord background to your card, you can do this very easily by creating a new layer placed at the bottom and then drawing a rectangle shape the same size as your outboard, giving it a cord fill with no stroke. You'll just have to make sure that all of the non college parts of your illustration have a white feel layer so that the cooler background doesn't show through. 12. Say It With Text: If you want swept text your final design. It doesn't have to be anything complicated. Let the text tool and just play around with your ideas. Try experiments in with the size and placement of your text, as well as thinking about what funds might compliment your subjects are illustration style text tool is selected. You can use the toolbar along the top to change the character size and former your text as well as using the Align Pellet. If you want to send to it to your outboard, use the lawsuit to to select any elements of your design that you close together to use the order. Me white are clicking and dragging to draw around each shape, playing around the scale and layout of different parts of your illustration. Major spark A great idea for some text that you could add to complete your final design. You can easily create a speech bubble, using the same technique as show Jew for the Paps silhouette in the last lesson, using the Ellipse and star shapes and the Pathfinder pellets. In this example, I was inspired to write a simple play on words based around the top of the mushroom being called a cap, and only one of them having accord. Phil here added interest to a very simple design by adding my text to the negative space inside the watering can handle when choosing funds. The character menu on the top toolbar doesn't preview what the fonts look like. So if you would like many with examples, will need to go to window and dance type toe from the character palette. A type two my words of separate paths and then re scale in order to film our shape as much as possible, you can toggle between a Phil are a stroke for your text using the cooler polar on your toolbar just as you did with your illustration. Using a combination of the two could be a good way to emphasize certain words. To fill the gaps even further, I will have to turn my type into shapes with ankle pines by selecting each word and going to object along the top and down to expand. I can now use the white IRA to select on adjust the ankle pines of my letter shapes individually, but will no longer be able to edit the text using the title to use em. Believe mesh, slept your text goto object and then down to envelope distort. Choosing. Make with mesh in the dialogue box set rose to one and columns to the same number of letters in the word you want to manipulate. Make sure you take the preview box before cooking. Okay, you can then use the wire tirades with just the anchor points of the frame around your text to make it fit into a specific space. This'll technique is similar to the last one, but an envelope meshes really useful because you could manipulate the shape of your text without losing the ability to edit your time. Use the other envelope and edit content bonds on the top toolbar to toggle between editing the time or exiting the shape of the mesh. So correct any unexpected anomalies you may see after manipulating your text, object down toe envelope, distort and choose expand again, turning the letters into shades with anchor points. You can then use the subtract anchor point tool on why arrow to get rid of any unneeded anchor points and find you in the shape of your letters. Envelope warp is another from way of changing the shape of your text. When you're Texas selected, you can activate envelope walk by clicking the icon on the top toolbar or by going toe object down to envelope, distort the same as you did for mesh only choosing. Make with warp. Instead, choose your stale from the drop down menu and adjust the sliders to change the shape of your text. Once activated, you can also adjust the settings using the toolbar along the top. In this example, the bulge style is just right for the shape I want to fill in my room. People and I can also adjust my friend to fit in the same way I did before with the envelope mesh. 13. Saving & Printing Your Final Design: Now you've added your text and finished your final design. All you have to do now is save your work. You'll want to save. It is an illustrator file so that you can come back and edit it later or use it again in another project. To do this, simply go to file and save us. Decide on the file name and click safe in the dialog box. I usually just stick with the default settings to get an image that you can upload to your class project on skill share on especially fear. Using the free trial version of Illustrator. You'll also want to save your work as a picture file, go to file again, but this time to safe the Web, which will bring a preview window in this window. You can choose your file type from GIF J, Peg or P and G eight or 24. The one you choose will depend on the unused edge of your design work. For the purposes of this, I'm just going to choose J pic. You can also change the quality of your saved image, with settings ranging from low to maximum notice that as you choose different quality settings. This also affects the foul size, which can see in the bottom left corner below the preview image if needed. You can check your image quality by holding down control on your keyboard and using the plus and minus keys to zoom in and out. You can also choose to optimize your artwork with options of our our type optimized. When you're happy. The settings all that's left is to click the save button. If you do want to print your card, there is just one more step to take because you will need to change size of your art board to take the back of your card into account. To do this, simply select the outboard palette. Click on the square on the right hand side on a dialog box, will open up the front of my card measures 10.5 by 14.5 centimeters when it's folded, but when it's flat for printing, it will actually be twice the width at 21 by 14.5 centimeters. Your measurements will depend what size card you are printing on before clicking. OK, make sure you select the right hand doc. I'm a square symbol to the right of the dimensions box. This will ensure that the compass is extended to the left only rather than at both sides. You finished card is now ready to print if you want to have any text or a logo to the back of the card, I found the easiest way to get it centered is to use a rectangle shape to align it. I don't have a logo at the moment as I'm rebranding, so I'm just going to use my social media handle resize your text all Okay, I make sure it's on the layer above the one you create your shape home, so let the rectangle tool and click anywhere on the outboard, entering the measurements of the back of the card into the dialog box. It doesn't matter what Kolia rectangle is. I'm going to make mine lighter so that I can see my text more clearly. Position the rectangle so that is aligned with the left edge of the outboard. Now hold down the shift key to select both your text on the rectangle with the black arrow next to go to the line palette on the bottom, right, So let the align tub and choose a line to selection in the drop down menu. Underline objects. Choose the Horizontal Alliance Center option and then use the other keys on your keyboard to notice the rectangle back in line with the edge of the outboard. If you want your logo to be dead center, you can also use the vertical Align center option. I want my text near the bottom but sent it horizontally, so holding shift to constrain, I dragged my text bounce where I wanted. When you're finished, you can de select your text or logo and delete the rectangle by pressing backspace on your keyboard To print your car, simply go to file and then down to print. Choose your printer from the drop down menu, and then you'll need to look at the preview window on the left to check your paper size and orientation. If your design doesn't fit exactly into the preview window, change the size of your paper by going to the media size drop down. You can also go to set up in the bottom left, so access your own princess settings if needed. This window may look different depending on your printer, but the most important things to check out the prince size and quality and that your orientation is set to landscape What you're happy with the settings on your card looks as it should in the preview window. You ready to click? Print. If you've printed your card and you want to go one step further, you can choose in court paper to stick on the inside, easing a strip of double sided tape down the center crease. If you card a small tried to use thin paper on, it works best if you cook your paper two sides. That's slightly smaller than your card. And finally, with clean hands, carefully fold your finish card. I like to use a bone folder, but you can also use the back of a spoon to get a nice crisp fold. 14. BONUS TIP: Use Your Digital Illustrations to Practise Drawing by Hand: since you made it this far, I'm gonna share with you my bonus tip for this class. As promised. All you have to do is just printing chosen illustrations on some older reprinted paper. And then all you need is a light path. Awesome layout paper, which is just thin. Semi see through paper often used for design development you can buy. This is a sketch pad in different sizes by the online or in get out surprise doors. Once printed, you can use your digital illustration as a template to trace over to create new artwork with the more have drawn field more, you practice drawing, even if it's using a template, more confident you will become. And you'll be surprised how much muscle memory could build. Be fast and efficient. Way to try out different techniques and practices, like shaded a mark making. Why not try experiments in with different media and see how many variations you can create from the same image? You can even read digitized these new works of art later, but that really is a whole of a lesson 15. Thank You!: So that's it. Congratulations. You made it to the end of the class. I hope you looking forward to getting stuck in with urine designs on. I can't wait to see what you come up with. No way to project to start your own project for this class. And if you're looking for more inspiration, you can check out Project Gallery where you'll find my sample project a zealous. Hopefully it's model of Leawood that's been submitted by your fellow students. Supposed to work on social media. If you're into that kind of thing and tuck me because I'd love to see them, I am available for questions and feedback. So just give me a shout and I will do my best to help. Finally, Thank you so much for taking this class. I really love to see you in the next one.
