In a society where it's so competitive to get a job, a strong CV is a must. If you want to stand a chance against 100s of applicants, it is important to spend the time to really understand what recruiters and hiring managers are looking for.

If you are a recent graduate, new to the working world or finding it hard to get a job, this is the perfect class for you.

I have over 10 years of hiring experience and have hired some of the most talented people in my industry, I've seen 1000s of CV's and as a hiring manager know how challenging it is to get a job in such a saturated market. I'm here to share with you all the tricks and tips I've learnt over the years, the techniques you can use and real examples to show you what stands out and what makes me put a candidate to the next stages.

1. Introduction: If you are a recent graduate, new to the working world or struggling to get a job. This is the perfect class for you. By the end of this class, you will have a solid CV that you can use straight away to apply for jobs. You will also learn more about yourself and be able to use techniques I teach you to continue to amend your CV as you grow in your career. I've over six years of experience in hiring and have high some of the most talented people in my industry. I've seen thousands of CVs and as a hiring manager, I know how competitive it can be to get a job in the saturated market. I'm here to share with the older tips and tricks I've learned over the years and show you what really stands out to hiring managers. It's always hard writing your first CV. I'm here to take you through all of it. We will go through what research needs to be done before you start writing your CV. How do you structure your CV to best please recruiters and hiring managers? How to format your CV for professional outlook. How to write a perfect that will grab recruiter's attention. How to detail your work experience and education and if needed, how to include your hobbies and interests. You have seconds to impress the hiring manager. If he should do anything, it should invest time in building a good CV. It can really shape your whole career and the jobs that you get. 2. Class Project: As you take this class, you should work on the class project at the same time. The project is split into two sections. As we go through the first part of the class, researching your industry and the skill sets you need for the jobs you are applying for, you should fill out the brainstorming template. Next, we will go through building the structure of your CV. You can use a CV template provided and you can work through it as we go through the different parts of the CV. By the end of the project, you will have a brainstorm of all your skills and experiences. And you will have a CV that you can use to apply for jobs straight away. Feel free to share your CV with the class and me for any feedback and support. 3. Industry and Role Research: In this section, we will be covering the research you need to carry out before starting on your CV. This will give you the best chance of standing out. You should use the brainstorming template from the project plan to make notes as you carry out your research. This will help you significantly when you prepare to write your CV. One of the biggest mistakes I've noticed that candidates make, failing to research that industry and their role before writing their CV when they apply, I can tell straight away that they have not done any research as a CV is extremely generic and not catered for the role that there are applying for. This means that they do not stand out compared to others who have taken the time to research their industry, research their target role, and make effort to make this CV much more specific. If you do not know the skills and experience and equalities that your target employer and in your target role are looking for. It will be very difficult to write good CV that will impress them. So before you start writing your CV into hit the job boards and start looking at ads for roles in the industry that you'd like to apply for. Made sure to make notes of the conduit requirements that keep appearing throughout these job ads for the same or similar role and add that to your brainstorm template. Let's go through an example of how this works. I'm going to be looking at job ads for customer support team lead role. As you can see, they give you an overview of the company at a high level, what the requirements are and what the role involves. We want to focus on the experience and requirements they are looking for and see if we have the skills to match. We need to focus on how skills, such as industry specific skills, roles specific skills, knowledge, and a specific qualifications. Don't worry too much about soft skills, such as communication, teamwork, or problem-solving. Soft skills are great to have, but the applicable to most industries and most people see you and you focus on the house skills, on your CV that make you unique and differentiate you from other candidates. Once you have a list of the specific skills and experience that your target role is looking for. It'll be so much more easier to case your CV around that on our brainstorm template, I'm going to add this guilt and requirement this job is looking for. For example, it says two plus years of experience and the customer care customer service role. Now I'm getting it right next to it, what I have. So let's say I have three years of experience in customer service to and retail and one year in banking customer support. Then further down, they say a bonus is tagline management or project coordination experience. Now I'm going to think about what I have and I have managed to three people before. Here you could write, if you've managed people before, if you haven't, you would write, I have no line management experience. And this basically shows you adapt in your skill sets for potential jobs you're applying for. And that means you need to work on building these skills, either your next job or finding a way to gain these skills as potentially by doing other causes. Now, fine, two to three job adverts in your industry that you would like to apply for and take out the key skills and requirements that they are looking for and fill in your brainstorming templates, try to add as much detail as possible for each section. For example, if you lead on a project and have some project experience that's relevant to the job you're applying for. Go into detail around what you did in that project. And then what we will do is we'll pick the best and most relevant bits for your CV. Make sure you finish your brainstorm template before we move on to the next section where we'll start to build out your CV. 4. Basic Formatting of a CV: In this section, we'll be covering the basic format of a CV and why it's so important. You do not need to do anything as I have provided a template for you to use. However, you can amend it based on your preferences and how you would like it to look like the format of your CV is so important, recruited to spend seconds just glancing over a CV if yours isn't formatted well, has incorrect grammar, isn't easy on the eyes. It's so common to have it skipped regardless of how great the content is inside, the key to having a great CV is for it to be easy on the eyes or hiring managers. We see so many CVs that you might think, oh, it'll be nice, be bold and different. My advice is, don't Always keep it professional because you do not know what biases the person who's looking over your CV might have. They might not like that very light blue that you've used or that fancy Italica won't do not give them a reason to skip your CV. Now let's go through the CV template in more detail. Firstly, you should use a word processing program to create your CV, such as Microsoft Word or Google Docs, which is free, you just need to make a Google account. You need to use one of these to open the template and make edits. Keep the format simple by sticking to a clean and crisp font that can easily be read, the color scheme should be basic black text on a white background. Best not to use fancy fonts and wacky colors games in hopes of standing out as this will just look unprofessional and could make the CV difficult to read. If you are writing your CV for the first time, you should keep it to one page. This is very important. Just remember that recruiters and hiring managers sometimes see a hundreds of CVs a day. So trying to keep it concise in a page is the best way to hold their attention. That way they can see everything as a glance is a great way of showing your skills. Use bold headings to divide different sections of your CV. This will have recruiters navigate through it easily when they're skim reading. Always check for spelling mistakes wrongly is a free app that you can use that checks basic spelling and grammar is good for doing a quick check. I would also advise that you get someone asked to check it over. Once you've finished your CV, you should save as a PDF. I cannot stress how important this is as a PDF, it means when you send it, the format is completely lobes. This means that when a hiring manager opens the CV, there's no chance for the format to change and they'll see exactly what you sum them. I've had a few times where I've seen where documents sent to me and the formatting has completely changed and the words are not aligned and it's very hard to read. You do not want to make that mistake once you are happy with the formatting and the changes you've made to the template. Let's move on to the next section where we'll go through each section of the CV. 5. Overall Structure of a CV: Now that you have a format of your CV that you are happy with, we'll go through the overall structure of the CV. This is the suggested structure by many hiring managers and is the best way to present yourself as it draws attention to the most valuable information. First, this is a brief overview of how your CV to be structured. Before we dive deeper into the details of each section, your name and contact details should sit at the very top of your CV so that recruiters can easily see how to contact you. Next is your CV for about o personal statement. This is a brief introductory paragraph that summarizes your abilities and aims to grab the recruiter's attention. It's basically a very high level summary of your CV. Then your work experience should be listed in reverse chronological order. The most recent first as is the most relevant, then your education should be listed near the bottom of your CV. This is as your work experience is more important for job applications. And lastly, a list of the most relevant House Gayle, to the job you're applying for, and any interesting qualifications that you'd like to add. You can also add hobbies and interests to the bottom of OCV if you think they would add value to your application rate. Now let's dive into each of these sections in much more detail. Have your template ready and we'll work through it together. 6. Overview: Basic Information: Great. Let's go through the first part of your CV that contains the basic information. You don't want your contact details to be missed, so place them at the top of your CV underneath your name. You can also add a professional title next to your name to really set the tone of the CV. If you think you'll make your CV stand out and you have a title that matches the job row. The only contact details you need to include are your e-mail address. Just make sure it's a professional-looking one with no nicknames or anything funny, your phone number and your location. You don't need to add your full address, your date of birth, or photo of yourself. None of these things will have an effect on the hiring decision and we'll waste valuable space on your CV. As you can see, mine is very simple. Now, fill in your template and other basic information in, and let's move on to your professional profile. 7. Overview: Professional Summary: The first section in your CV is what some people call the personal statement or professional summary, is an introductory paragraph that summarizes your skills, experience, and knowledge at really high level is basically a summary of your CV. The purpose is to catch the recruiters eyes when they open your CV, excite them, and encouraged them to read the rest of your CV it should give the readers are really nice overview of your industry specific skills hub of companies you worked for, qualifications and anything exciting me deliver to them Korea, this is really important as it gives them an idea of your personality and helps you stand out. To write a successful profile, you should keep it short and sharp, somewhere between 510 lines packet with skills and experience and avoid using qij terms like hardworking team player. Remember, these are soft skills and do not provide much value. Here is an example of mine operations lead with three plus years of experience working in startups in the education, fintech, banking, and research sector, leading many teams when people, customer partnership and project operations. My key strengths are in people management, data analysis, project management, strategic planning and scaling teams. And love solving problems and creating high-performing teams, as well as building a culture accompany can be a proud of. As you can see, this is snapshot or my experience was killed that provide what industries I've worked in. Hiring Manager who's looking at my profile, know it's exactly if I fit the role that I'm playing for an end if I have development experience. So for example, if I was applying for operations though, as you can see, I already have shown strips away in the beginning that I have bearings and that's automatically bringing tick boxes and the hiring managers had because I meet what they're looking for. Use your notes from the brainstorming template to help with this and get the hiring manager excited. You can also leave this part to last as it is a summary of your whole CV if you find it easier. Now, we'll move onto the next section, which is about your work experience and we'll go through some examples. 8. Overview: Work Experience: Your work experience is one of the most important parts of the CV. This is where the hiring manager can actually see if you have the experience required for the role you're applying for. This is why it's so, so important to use your brainstorming template and use the most relevant examples of your work experience to add here depending on the role you're applying for this, we'll show you in the best light and match your skills and experience specifically to the job you're piling thought it's much more targeted. Everything that matches what I'm looking for is basically constant ticks in my head. Your work expense should be listed in reverse chronological order. That's latest two, oldest with plenty of detail in your most recent bowls and less detail in older adults. The reason for this is employees are much more interested in your most relevant recent experience because it gives them a better idea of your achievements responsibilities that you have now for recent graduates or anyone who doesn't have much paid work experience. And you can add boundary experience here. Balls you've had potential at your school, university or college, such as placements or part-time jobs you've done, even jobs you've done for family and friends that show some of the skill sets that the job is looking for when writing role descriptions within your CV, you need to make sure that it is easy for recruiters to read them and process the information you are trying to get across. This is a simple but effective structure that shows us in a great way. Let's go through the example. You should have each vault in bold so it stands out and the employer and dates from when you started and when you finished or if you're currently working there and leave it as present, you should start with an introductory line that describes who the employee is, where you sit within the organization and what the overall goal of the bowl is. This builds contexts for the hiring manager, then list your responsibilities in shorts but concise bullet points. Try to showcase your full skill-set and demonstrate how your actions impact the employer. Most importantly, try to run your rolls off with impressive achievements that have made big positive impacts for your employer. And try to quantify these achievements with facts and figures where you can truly show how valuable you are to them. Some good examples of achievements include and saving costs, generating revenue, saving time, increasing efficiency, making processes better and helping customers. Again, you should use your brainstorming template here to take ideas from based on your experience and pick the ones that are most relevant to the role you're applying for. For example, as I am applying for a Cosmos support team lead role, I want to highlight here my multiple responsibilities and the project idea to improve customer experience and add these numbers in as this is the most relevant for the role I am applying for. Now, go through the work experience section and finish this section of once you've done that, let's move on to the next section where we will go through your education. 9. Overview: Education: The education section should be placed near the bottom of your CV. This is as it's not really relevant for your role, experience matters more. Here you just simply add a list of all the betterment education you've had along with dates and any high-level grace that you think will add value. I'd also add any achievements here are relevant to your education. For example, if you've got the highest grade in your class or received any awards for your performance. Remember to fill in your sampling. Now against move on to the last section of this CB around hard skills and qualifications. 10. Overview: Skills and Qualifications: Amazing. We're now at the last section of this CV. Here, we're going to focus on your core skills and any relevant qualifications that you would like to add that match the job you're applying for and it will help you stand out. Remember, everything you add should have a purpose. And the purpose is to send fireworks of the hiring managers brain. So here we're going to add any role specific skills. We've got raw specific qualifications, any languages and potentially IT or data skills. I've added courses I've taken that are relevant to management, people's goals and NTD do with strategy because this is relevant to the goal I'm applying for. You can add hobbies and interests if you'd like here, but I will say this is extremely optional depending on how much value it will add to your application, you should really only include them if they will provide an added benefit to your application. For example, if you're applying for social media marketing job, if you have your own blog or you write, or you have a lot of followers on social media, it might be good to actually include that in here as your hobby or one of your site interest because you're actually add value, great nafcillin, the last section of the CV. And if you haven't already, please fill in the professional summary at the top, which is a summary of your CV. Now for the last section, we'll do a quick recap and then go over some tips and techniques around hiring and your CV before we finish the class. 11. Recap, Tips and Advice: So that brings us to the end of this class, should now have a CV and can start applying to a job straight away. Just a quick recap. Make sure you research your industry specific skills and experience needed before you start writing your CV and fill in the brainstorming template with as much detail as possible. Make sure you format your CV really well and use the tips that I have shared. And lastly, make sure you take time to go through each part of the CV and work through it in detail. It's really important that you've invested this time in your CV because now you'll have it forever and continue to make changes from this base CV. A CV is something that hasn't changed for decades and I dot it will change in the future as well. So just investing the time to create this will hopefully save you so much time in the future. One thing I really want to share with you, and I think it's really important to know is that as a hiring manager, I want to do as much as you want this job. Hiring takes ages from creating the job applications, looking through CV student that interviews than having the person and onboarding is such a long process and we want it to go as quickly as possible. So we're really looking for someone to give the job to tell us everything we need to hear and take time and your CV and catered to the job you're applying for. That's just gonna make a smile and want to give you this job and what to move you to the next stage. I want you to know that we're not looking to catch you out that in mind when applying for jobs from the brainstorming session and make sure you look into the gaps in your skill sets for the voltage you are applying for is so important to fill those gaps. So might be from taking courses, speaking to other people and seeing how you can gain those skills or taking up some voluntary work to help fill those gaps, especially if it's such an important requirement and the job or career that you would like to get. And then continue to edit your brainstorming template, you should continue to add as you gain more experience and make it as the hub for your CV and job, It's also really useful to use it and interview process when you need to look at specific projects or experience that you've done that you want to use for certain interview questions and even in your application. And lastly, what are the most important things is take your time when you're applying for a job, it is better to spend your time applying for one job and catching it to one role and one company that you really want than sending a generic CV to 10 different places. This focus will help you stand out against other candidates who basically just send a generic CV. I can definitely tell when a CB has been catered to the company I'm working for. And lastly, don't forget to share your CV and your brainstorming template. I would be happy to look over your CV for you and it'll be a great way to get more feedback from the community of students as best of luck in your job search.
