1. Introduction (3): Welcome to my course. In this course, we'll be
talking about deep work. This course is for
people who leave all the work until the last
minute before the deadline. If you're one of those people
who get distracted easily because your
environment is working against you and not for you, then this course is for you. Now if you follow this
course as best as you can, you'll receive major benefits. I will teach you a new system of goal-setting that's
actually sustainable. I will teach you
how to work more in 90 min than an entire day. And the work you will do will be higher-quality and
more meaningful. The point of deep
work is to prioritize the important work and
reduce your work time. The benefit of this is it
will drastically reduce your work time and you can spend more time with
friends and family. This will also give
you more time to rest and recover
for the next day.
2. What is deep work? (2): What is deep work? The main idea of deep
work is that you focus on the crucial tasks and put all your effort into
them for just 90 min. This will lead you to feel like you just had a major
accomplishment. Now the point of deep
work is to focus on the crucial tasks and to stop focusing on almost
entirely unimportant tasks that we spend most of our time. But now those shallow tasks
can be replying to emails, checking notifications, or
replying to text messages. In short, deep
work is periods of undistracted work
on important work.
3. 80 20 rule (1): The most important rules
we need to follow for deep work is the 80 20 rule. And that is when 80% of the
work we do is unproductive. And the 20 per cent of
work we do is productive. That is when we are in the focused workflow
without any distractions. Now the aim of the 80 20 rule is just spend a couple
of hours on the 20% and less on the
unproductive 80 per cent. Now, after spending a couple of hours on the 20th percent, use the rest of the day to
relax your mind and body. Now, we're working on the 20%. Do not check your
notifications or messages. In a study by Cal Newport, he explained that when we check each message
or notification, we lose 15 to 17 min of progress
with every notification.
4. Goal and Purpose setting for deep work (1): And anything that we do, we need to establish
our goals and purpose. I suggest you
follow me and write your goals in the
same format as me. Grab a piece of paper and
write your purpose at the top. Now we're going to
structure our goals. We are going to start off
with our Alpha goals. This is gonna be your identity. This identity will lead you
to fulfill your purpose. Now, you want to
write, I am e.g. I am a successful business owner or I am a straight a student. This way, you want to frame
yourself as your identity. You don't want them,
right? I will, or I want. Second is our Beta goals. This is our motivation. This is what you're going to remind yourself why you started working and the rewards for accomplishing all of your goals. Right, This next to
your alpha goals. Our last part is the
lead measures or habits. These are the habits
you're going to do to achieve the Alpha
and Beta goals. How many hours of
deep work are you going to put into your goals? These habits are what you'll be doing during your
deep work blocks. Now this is important step because this way
you have created a plan of what you need to do and you can now take action.
5. Class Project (3): Hey guys, welcome to
the class project. In this class project, we will be writing our
Alpha and Beta goals with our lead measures. Now, you really want
to think about this. Your goals be specific to you. After you write your goals, feel free to post
them if you like. If you need any help, I've attached a file onto
the project descriptions. You can follow. You
can use that as a guide and copy the
same format as me. Now as a refresher, our Alpha goals are our
identity, our beta goes, our motivation, and
our lead measures are the habits we're going to
take to achieve those goals. Now this is an important
step because we want to get you in the habit
of writing your goals down. When you write your goals down, you can make a plan for
yourself and take action. This will help you achieve
all of your goals.
6. Deep Work routine (3): Routine is the best way to
keep yourself on track. The routine will keep you on
track with your Deep Work, which is our main
goal of this lesson. Now here's an example
routine for me. I see, But 11:00 P.M.
wake up at 09:00 A.M. then I do my
morning routine. After that, I gratitude journal
for about two to 3 min, and then I meditate
for five to 10 min. After that and make my coffee. Then I start my first
90 minute work luck. Now throughout all of this,
I don't check my phone. And this could be
different for you. If you have an important
message or expecting someone, then that's an exception. But in general, you don't
want to check your phone. Next, we want to do
a data collection. That's when you know how
much work you got done. And you want to aim
to get more work done in the next
90 minute block. This is challenging yourself. And when you challenge yourself, you invoke Parkinson's Law. And Parkinson's Law is when you establish a deadline and you achieve the work
within that deadline. After that, you give
yourself a break, get you give yourself
about 15 min. Go get some moderate and relax, and then start your second
90-minute work luck. For this work block you wanna
do work for another task. You don't want to check your phone during
this block either. After the second block furnishes
you've worked for 3 h. 3 h have been filled with
completely productive work. You also want to do
a data collection for the second buck also. Now, if possible, you want to add a workbook
in the morning. If that's not possible. At a word, like anytime
you have free time, whether it's 45 min or 60 min, add in deep work
whenever you are free. This way you ensure productive
and meaningful work.
7. Reducing environment distractions (2): Having a distraction free
environment as one of the best strategies for
success and productivity. Well, we want to do is disable the notifications on our phone. How do we do that? Well, first you want to
go to your Settings, and then you want to
click Notifications. After that, you
click show previews. And then there should
be never option. What this will do is it will
show you the notification, but it will not show you
the text that's on it. And that's what distracts us, is the text on the notification that ruins our concentration. Another option you can do is
the Do Not Disturb option. What this will do is when
you get a notification, your phone screen
will not let up. We want to make
sure to do this to all the other devices
are around you. And you want to reply to messages after your
deep work block, this will save you so much time. But what happened is that all your messages will stack up. Then you can go and reply to them more efficiently
and slowly. Now, our aim is what Cal Newport likes to
call it a pure morning, that basically when your
morning is filled with no distractions and it is only for your morning
obligations like your deep work. If there's any other
obligation that you have, you want to try to change it to a different time, if possible.
8. Scoreboard for accountability (2): The main reason why
most people are successful is because they
kept themselves accountable. But how do you keep yourself accountable when there
is no one else around? Well, you create a scoreboard. Scoreboard will keep track of the amount of deep work
blocks that you do. First, let's go over the basic
structure of a scoreboard. We want to title it deep work. And then on the side, you
want to put the date, e.g. it could be the week
of November 21st. Then you add your tally marks each time you complete
a deep work block. Now, you wanted to put
us somewhere visible. So you can add a mark each time you completely
Deep Work block. E.g. I. Put mine in
front of me on my wall. And you also want to structure
it in the form of a table. That way it's as easy to keep up with it and easy
to understand. And this keeps you accountable, which inclines you
to reach your goals. Now, you want to put a few
like rewards at the bottom. This way, it inclines
you to reach your goal and it makes you look
forward to future work. Lux.
9. Mindsets for success (2): When starting deep work, you need to have
a better mindset. Here are a couple of different
mindsets is that you can choose or try to implement. The first mindset
you need is to have a scarcity mindset
with your time. You need to think, what am
I doing? Is it valuable? My time is too valuable to
focus on an unimportant task. The second month that you need, it's shallower or
unimportant task is equal to instant gratification. Easy work does not get
you closer to your goals, which is instant gratification. You'd take action and doing deep work is delayed
gratification. That in itself is rewarding. The second, the
third mindset you need is when you reduce
instant gratification, you have more free time
to relax and rest. This recipe, it will give you a better word block tomorrow. The fourth mindset
you need is that it's okay for minor or bad
things to happen. When you start something, there's bound to be
something that goes wrong. But you can use that
moment to learn and grow instead of
getting frustrated. The fifth mindset you need
is attention residue. And that's basically
what happens when you switch from one
task to another. In other words, multitasking. You cannot multitask deep work. You can only multitask
shallow or unimportant tasks. Now the six mindset you
need is the grand gesture. That's when you do something big that as relevant to your goals. E.g. say you book a hotel room just to focus
on a project that you have. You use that alone time for constant workflow
and productivity. That is a grand gesture. The seventh mindset you need is mainly different
block activities. E.g. if the first block
activity you wrote an essay, the second block
activity do something opposite of an essay
like record videos. And the eighth mindset you need is positive reinforcement. Be proud of yourself. You need to think that each Deep Work lock gets
you closer to your goals. This makes you look forward
to future work box.
10. Shut down ritual (3): To ensure a productive
end to our work, we need to create
a shutdown ritual. Shut down ritual
is a plan that we have to close out all
of our important work. Well, you want to do
is at a certain time, every day, finished
all of your work. This creates a
work-life balance. Here's a tip. Create a checklist of all
the unimportant tasks that you need to do after
your deep work is finished. You can send emails, send messages,
check your calendar to see if you have
anything else to do. And plan for tomorrow. For tomorrow will make you
more efficient and productive. And at the end of the checklist
you'll want to write, my work is done for the day.
11. Conclusion (3): Congratulations, you've made
it to the end of the course. This course, I told you
about deep work and the importance of it for
success and productivity. Now one thing you
should keep in mind is that deep work is a scale. The more you practice it,
the better you get at it. First when you start your
first 90 minute work block, it might be difficult. But I promise you the more you do it, the better
you get at it. Your attention will skyrocket. You will feel like you've never had this much focused before. Now, you really want to
be patient with yourself. When I first started,
it was difficult. I couldn't focus for 90 min, but solely after I
kept implementing it, I got better and now I'm more productive and
successful than ever. Thank you and I hope you
succeed on your journey.
