2. Lecture 1. Stripping back the formatting of your text to create a simple document: Stripping back the formatting of your manuscript. What makes electronic e-books different from printed books? During any conversion process to an ePub or Kindle Moby electronic ebook file. Your doc manuscript is converted into a wreath flowable, responsive e-book format. This type of file format can adjust to the orientation and the shape of the contents according to the device your reader is using to read the text, such as a tablet computer or laptop computer or mobile phone. In portrait or landscape mode. Your novel will therefore be displayed correctly and fill the screen or the readers device. Cannot direct publishing or ADP. You just a converter software to transform your document into a reef flowable Kindle Moby format file, which offers the end reader a wide range of customer options, will show you familiar with this already. As an example, Kindle e-books allow the reader to resize the text and change the font on all the Kindle devices and the free Kindle app reading applications. For example, on the Kindle app on my iPad, I'm offered a range of eight fonts. Amazon MBO, bold, baskerville, Bulkeley, Cecilia, Georgia, Helvetica, open dyslexic, and Palatino. Plus, there are five line spacing options to select from and to. Font size adjustment buttons with a down-arrow to reduce the font size, up out to increase the font size. There's also four choices, a background page color. This level of user customization means that the base coding of the e-book must be as simple and as logical as possible. Your book must be standardized and will be standardized by the GDP converter to make sure that the reading experience for your book is consistent across the large range of reading devices and kindle apps now available. That's why the first part of preparing your manuscript to be published as a Kindle e-book is one of the hardest Kindle create. Wonderful tool. Because it means that you don't have to know anything about coding to create a professional looking e-book and paperback, which is fully acceptable to the kVp converter program. It also works with several word processing applications, such as Microsoft Word, Apple Pages, OpenOffice Writer, Google Docs at other word processing software, but exports to a doc format. It all cases. The first step in preparing your manuscript to be converted using Kindle create is to remove all the formatting from your document. This is hard, but it must be done in order to have a consistent style throughout your document. The style sheet for your electronic book file works using general but very simple styles. Instead as a formatting you used when you created your text document. This because the software has to convert it into a very flowable reef flowable document encode. The simplest and fastest thing to do is to get back to the basic text, which means stripping out all of the formatting in the entire document. This will ensure that you're not working with a document where you have used different styles for the same type of text in different parts of the book or sections. Create a new copy of your master text document to work on as your Kindle master file. For word. Open your document, press Control a to select the entire document. Then click the Clear or Formatting button in the Font Header Menu to remove all formatting. That's the little eraser sign next to the capital a. This will clear all formatting from your document. For Google Docs, press Control a to select the whole document. Then go to format in the heading and select Clear Formatting. The second step is a turnoff. Any automatic numbering, an automatic bullet lists. I might be wondering why we use this in a novel, but in some languages, the dialogue of a novel is indicated with a dash instead of a quotation mark. E-book Route readers can change that formatting and disrupt the reading experience. So the end-user uncertain apps. This means that you should replace Automatic Dialogue lists with manual dash marks if you want to use them to indicate dialogue. Step three is to remove the page numbers. Now this thing is bizarre, but electronic documents don't use page numbers since they are one long continuous stream of code. For word. Double-click in the header or footer of your document where you have your page number at the moment. This will open up the header and footer page options in your menu bar. Click the Remove page numbers option. The page number tab. For Google Docs. Click in the header or footer of your document where you have your page numbers and delete the page number. This will delete it for the rest of the document. Step four, remove the forced lung breaks and paragraph breaks. Many writers use the Enter key to insert an extra line between paragraphs. All those extra brakes have to be removed. It is very time-consuming. I know if this is a habit you've got yourself into, but it needs to happen. Don't worry. We're going to add an extra spaces between paragraphs, lights later in a form of styles. But phenomenons be taken out so that all your texts is space the same way, which is single. Find all your forced line breaks and paragraph breaks. Use Control plus a to select the entire document. Then click the paragraph mark in the paragraph menu. This is also known as a pill Chrome. Ok. This will show you all the formatting and hidden paragraph breaks that you have accidentally inserted or deliberately inserted as you wrote your novel. Now comes the difficult part. You need to go through your document and delete any unwanted paragraph breaks or soft carriage returns. You only have one paragraph break at the end of each paragraph of text. Step five, ensure all chapters start on a new page. If you've been using paragraph breaks on deliberate carriage returns and enters to force to a new chapter to start on next page, the process you've just gone through and step four, well, of course, chaos in your document, the chapters will be all over the place. For both Word and Google Docs, you need to insert a new page break at the end of every chapter so that the new chapter starts on a fresh page. You can do this. Use the Control plus Enter keys to insert a new page break. Or you can use the Insert Page Break function in Word in the Layout tab. Go to Layout tab, then breaks, then new page or insert page break from the pages menu. Each chapter must start on a new page. Removed double-spaced. It's so easy to accidentally press the spacebar twice and insert a double-space between letters are at the end of a sentence. Unfortunately, double-space is really confused the e-book conversion process and can destroy the entire smooth reading or your novel. To find those double-spaced says, use the Find and Replace tool in Word to replace a double-space, single-space. So inward, go to the editing menu. Open the Replace box and press the space bar twice in the find what field. Then goes to the replaced with field and press the space bar. Once. You can also use replace all, use the find next option to see where the error has occurred. You'd be amazed how many double-spaced or in most documents. Step seven, images. Some fiction authors like to use an image of, for example, their publishing logo or author brand on the title page of that book. Have an author photo in the About the Author page. Include book cover images of this book or other books which are available now on pre-order. The correct way to add an image in the text. The front or back matter of your novel is to use the Insert Image function of your word processor to make sure that the image stays where you wanted to go. Don't wrap it around the text. Always have it in line with text. This locks it onto a separate line between two paragraphs or text blocks. It won't get confused. To make sure that the image stays where you won't. In Word, click on the image, then the image layout options and check that little box says in line with text that should be shaded as live. In Google Docs, click on the image and make sure that the inline option is live. That makes sure that your document is clean and has the image exactly where you want it to go. Kindle create does allow you to edit the image during the conversion process, but the options are very limited. And it will save lots of time if the image is formatted correctly in the original document before you upload it onto Kindle create. Almost there. Now I want you to step eight, the final spelling check and proofread. It's so easy to miss a word that has the correct spelling, for example, whereas the totally wrong word in that context, it won't be picked up by automatic spell checks. You have to manually proofread the document. Personally, I like to read it out loud. Read it from the back forward. You're reading each sentence as a stand-alone sentence. At the end of this step, you should now have a clean version of your manuscript, which is very basic formatting, very simple text formatting. And it's now time to add the formatting instructions back into the document using styles which we recognize buy Kindle, Direct Publishing. 3. Lecture 2. Using simply styles to rebuild the Structure of your novel.: Lecture to using simple styles to rebuild the structure of your novel. We have now stripped out all the formatting of your manuscript. The text of your troubles should be very simple and straightforward. We're going to introduce two basic simple styles now, which kVp will use to generate a very professional looking manuscript. The two key styles, the normal style for the body text of your novel and the chapter heading style. Step one, set the normal body style for your text. If you have removed all the formatting, the text of your novel will already be set to the normal style. For most readers, reading large amounts of text is much easier if the reading is serif font. As a reminder, serif fonts a little tails on the end like Palatino, Georgia. Font size, I'm about 1011 or 12. It would be flowable documents such as a Kindle e-book. The reader will decide on what size font you want to use. So at this point, we're setting a very basic size for the font. I would recommend something like 11 or 12. How to change the normal style of your document? Go to the first paragraph of your document, your texts to the novel and select a few paragraphs. Style of that text will be displayed in the Styles had a bar in Word. Experiment. Have fun, change the font and the font size of those few paragraphs until it really looks sparkling and easy to read. They click on the normal style which should be highlighted and then click on Update. Normal, too much selection. Your normal style for the entire document will now be changed to match the style of those few paragraphs you have just changed and customized. Writing in Google Docs, you found very similar process. Again, select a few paragraphs from the actual text of your novel. Check that the header tells you this is the normal text style. In the example, the current font is Ariel 11. I want to change this to Georgia 11. Then click into Format, normal text and right-click or normal text. Update normal text to match. Again, this will update the style of the normal text for your entire document to the style you just set for those few paragraphs. Then save a document. Step to set the normal body style paragraph indent. Many novelists prefer to indent the text on the first line of each paragraph to make it easier for the reader to go through large amount of text in there novel of using tabs, manual tabs. You set the first line of each paragraph using what's called an indent. An indentation. This is in the paragraph styles. You can decide how much of a gap you want to use. By setting the width of that indent. Select those few paragraphs again. The text of your document. Go to paragraph formatting. Paragraph options from the homepage. Look at special first-line indentation. I would recommend starting off with nought 0.3 centimeters. The equivalent of the US, like click Okay to set the paragraph indent. Some authors refer or a wider indent, a bigger gap at the beginning of the first line of every paragraph. If you want to do that, you can set it to null point forward even nought 0.5 centimeters. So feel free to experiment with a large block of text to see how changing the first-line indent improves or does not improve the reading experience of your novel. See what it looks like. You can always come back and change that indent width. Google Docs follow the same process. Select a few paragraphs of text in the chapter, first chapter of your novel. Go to the Format option in the header and then a line and indent. Select the indentation options at the bottom of the option range, and then special first-line and set the indent you want. Again, you could be nor 0.3.4.5. I suggest starting with null 0.3 and then apply. Step two has been done. Now you can go on and set the chapter headings style. Step three. It's essential that you tell the Kindle, kVp or Kindle create conversion software where your chapter starts and where your page titles are. The system must be able to recognize the headings so that the key DCP converter can create an automatic table of contents for you, which will be displayed electronically with the Kindle e-book file for your work. Chapter titles and section headings to death remark as header one style. If you want them to be included in the table of contents. In both Word and Google Docs, simply click the chapter title of the first chapter or page heading and select the heading one style from other, the heading line or the format line. The easiest thing to do is to work through your check your text, your manuscript of your novel, and change any heading that you want to have in your table of contents to the Heading one style. This includes the title heading page of the front matter. That's the copyright page about the book notes on the author. Any page you want included in the table of contents, then every chapter title, new chapter, and then in the back of the book and the acknowledgments, the About the Author page and other books by the author. Any title you want me to go to the table of contents must be set to a heading one. This makes it much easier for the Kindle conversion process to work. And it makes sure that you know exactly what's gonna be in your table of contents. Don't forget, you can change the style of heading one later in Kindle create. In Google Docs, the same applies. Click on the normal texts header and then click the down arrow to select heading one and then apply heading one. Work through your text and change the chapter headings and all the page headings to the Heading one style. For check your documents for heading styles. You can update the font and the font size of the chapter headings and sent to them a few ratio have them aligned to the left. Work through your document and apply the saved heading one style in every chapter title and page title that you want to be included. Just make sure that your copy that the old look consistent style heading one. Then save new Docs file or export to a new Docs file. Great. Your document is now ready to be converted into a Kindle e-book. 4. Lecture 3. How to download the Kindle Create tool: Now that you have formatted your Word document and created a very clean, simple formatting. It's time to start using Kindle create. The first step is to download the Kindle create two instructions on how to download the conversion tool in two places. First on the kVp website, and secondly from inside the Amazon.com Kindle Store. You have a Windows PC. You can click on the Download Now button. Confirmation box appears. Click Save file will then be prompted to save the installation to your downloads folder. You can launch Kindle create by selecting the Windows key than Amazon. Then Kindle create a Macintosh PC. Click the Download Now button from the same screen. Download begins. Click the Show downloads button. Then double-click the installer file and the installation wizard opens. There are six steps in this. Click Continue, read through the license agreement, click continue and then click Agree. Prompted to install kinda created the default location on your Mac, but you can change the location, click continue and then click Install. You will receive success message when the installation is complete. Then click close. After installation, you can launch Kindle create by selecting the launchpad and then Kindle create. 5. Lecture 4. Getting Started on Kindle Create: Now you have downloaded the Kindle create tool. We can get started working on our novel inside the tool. This is your welcome screen to kindle create. There are two options. You can resume an existing project by clicking on the file on your hard drive or MacBook or laptop. Or you can select a new project from file, which takes you to the whole curried Kindle create process. Let's start work on that. Kindled create launch screen. Click the New Project from File button. You can also launch a new project by selecting File their new project, or using the keyboard shortcut Control plus n or Command plus n for Mac users. The contract language, select the language of your book. Does not change the language of the Kindle Create menu, by the way, is only the language of your text. The Choose File dialog button is displayed. Click the novel essays, poetry, narrative, nonfiction option. Then click the Choose File button. Navigate to the document of your novel on your local hard drive. Select the file and click Open. Once you have selected a file, Kindle create starts to convert it to a Kindle e-book. The conversion system optimizes the font faces, line spacing, margins, indents, and other types of features to improve the reading on electronic devices. It also creates a page break in your document into a new section. While your files importing Kindle create displays, rotating screens, or tell you much more about the Kindle create system. When the conversion finishes, the input successful, a dialog box is displayed. Click the Continue button. Let's start with automatic chapter recognition and the table of contents. Click the Get Started button and Kindle create begins to find the potential chapter title elements in your book. The automatic chapter titles dialog box is displayed. The convergence system reads the header one style. You put into your Word document or a Google Docs document as a chapter title. And it will use this chapter title in the Table of Contents which displayed electronically on Kindle books and kindle apps. This is your choice to decide which pages on which chapters you want in the Table of Contents, electronic Table of Contents. Check through that. The list of chapter titles that system suggests is correct. This is very important, is this is the list will be used to generate the automatic electronic table of contents for your book. The suggested chapter titles dialog box displays a list of the possible chapter titles based on everything that you've said is heading one in your document. Deselect any unwanted results and accept to save all the other suggestions. So you check those boxes, which you want the list to be excluded in the table of contents for your novel. For example, in the case that the novel, I did not want the contents page to be included in the table of contents. I uncheck that box, then click accept selected. The dialog box. You can also click a chapter heading to go to that section and apply formatting while keeping the suggested title checkboxes, dialog box open. You can now go through the help tutorials and dive into the system. 6. Lecture 5. Select a Theme: Started on Kindle create lecture three. Kindle creates themes. This is a very useful feature inside Kindle create, which helps you to format the text and chapter headings of your document without doing any additional work. Next to the Save button in the top right header is the theme button. The modern theme is the default active theme. But you can use one of the other three things if you prefer. These things have been designed so that all the elements, which is what Kindle create calls the sections of your document are standardized for that theme. This is the system that can create users to automatically generate an IV form. Reflow will document inside the Kindle create program which you know will work with kVp publishing. Select a theme and make it much easier for yourself at the very start of the process. For most novels, the modern or a morpheme works very well. But take time to experiment and select each theme in turn and see what your document looks like using that theme. It we don't like how the theme looks. Use the Undo arrow at the top left of the page to return to the modern theme. You should note that if your document is in one of the supported index languages, hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Murthy, akio, Gujarati. Kinda create otoscope light displays the classic and modern Theme Options. There are four aspects of every theme that you should look out for and check carefully on how they appear in your novel. First of the chapter title is always an uppercase. But compare the font used. Does this font match with the style and genre of your novel? Readers have very clear expectations on how the document looks like the certain types of novel. Then the chattel subtitle, lowercase or uppercase. What kind of font or the using it in italics, is it centered or slightly to align to the left or right? Then the body texts styling the standard Kindle e-book style is fully justified. That's because it's a reflow will document in the house to fill the space inside. Kindle apps are reading devices, but you can't add paragraph breaks and indents to break up large blocks of text. That doesn't seem separate a style. If you have scenes which continue inside the chapter and they break into another scene, you can use a scene separate a style. Each theme has a unique scene separator style which matches the styling of that particular theme. Experiment, find out what yours looks like. The system will recognize if you have indented your paragraph and also if you've used an existing seen sequitur style in your text document, such as three asterisks. The modern theme is the default Kindle create theme. And it's very adaptable to both fiction and nonfiction eBooks and print books. The chapter title is centered at a large capitals and a subtitle is in italics and just below the title, it works very well. The classic theme, you'll notice that both the chapter title heading and subheading use a serif font or left aligned, and the subheading is it Italica. This is in contrast to the modern theme, where the chapter heading is centered and uses a non serif font. The scene separator is made up of three large asterisks, larger than those used for the modern theme. But they're both centered. This very well in certain types of novel. The best thing to do is to experiment with your novel. For all four themes. Evaluate how your document looks when you apply those themes to it. The animal theme, the chapter title font is a very decorative grand vibes font and centered and the subtitle is also serif and centered. On the other hand, you might be writing science fiction or fantasy and quite a non serif font in the Cosmos theme. The choice is entirely yours and it's very genre specific. So do experiment with how each of these four themes looks in your work. This is the Cosmos theme. You see how graphic it is. How the scene separate, use a small triangles instead of asterisks. The animal theme uses the ground vibes font. It's very decorative, but for romances and certain other and contemporary and historical novels, it's an excellent thing to use. The scenes separator follows on from the ground vibes font and it's very decorative scrolls. 7. Lecture 6. Demonstration of Kindle Create Options: Welcome to kindle create the new software provided by Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing, designed specifically to help you as an indie author, create beautiful Kindle e-books and paperbacks which you know, will be accepted on kVp. That's Kindle Direct Publishing first-time because you're using their specific software. When we download the software, you will find a welcome screen like this. You start by creating a new project from file. Your work is a novel. Then you choose your file from your hard drive. Gdp will then open your file, convert it into the format it needs to open the document and edit it and give you some content pins to look at what it's doing. So the first thing to look at is this suggested chapter titles. The system has recognized that you used Heading one settings for titles in your document. Created a model table of contents from that list. Let's extend that down. This will be the electronic table of contents for your Kindle e-book on the Amazon system. What you want to do is delete any unwanted results, except the others to say the suggestions. They're suggesting titles here. I don't want that title. Or about the book. I do want all the chapter titles. Click and delete the tick next to anything you don't want. Then accept the selected. Done. So you'll see this screen appear. This is telling you that you can now prepare an e-book and a paperback from the same file. This system is embedded testing, but it means that you can create a paperback right now from within the Kindle create system. There are some paints here to tell you what to do. Work through those have a read and then click on the Next button until you've closed it. Let's go right back to the start using the scroll bar here. Do you get your title page? Now we can start exploring the Kindle creates screen. On the left, you'll see the pages of your document according to the chapter titles and the title, you have designated. The contents as an undo button. Insert button. On the right. You'll see these elements and formatting suggestions. Elements are part of the document with the kVp system recognize as being crucial the working of your document as a novel. These are the common ones, but there's also three groups, title pages, this is the title page. Bookstores and bookend pages, which you can expand by clicking this arrow here. The book Body, actual text. Book started ink pages. That's what we call front matter and dark matter. And this is actually the body of your text. But for right now, we're looking at the title page. Highlight the title of your book. This is the case study we're using for this tutorial. It's a cozy mystery called murdered mozzarella. If the book title, so I'm clicking on book title on the elements. It changes the font. It does so because it's applying a standard theme. Because the text on Kindle e-books has to be flowable. They have to use very simple font selections. If you look at theme here, there are actually four themes to choose from. Modern, classic, cosmos and ammo. The default is the modern theme with what I'm seeing here. If I click on Classic and then select it changes the font. This is actually a serif font. Go back to themes. If I clicked on Cosmos and did select. It's a much more graphic non serif font. The last theme is among the very decorative font. I actually like ammo for the chapter titles later. But one brilliant technique they use within Kindle create is that if you click on formatting, you can actually change the font of your titles and change the font used in the element is telling me here that the current element is book title and the font is grand vibes. If I click on this down arrow, I have three other fonts to choose from. There's Berkeley, which is serif, MBA, which is Sans-serif. Monospace. I quite like the Amazon MBA. We're going for that. Navigating to the author title. This is another element, so I'll click back into elements and going to author name. It then applies the author named styling for that theme. I quite like the image on the bottom, so that is the title page done. Then we press Save to save the Kindle create theme on your desktop. 8. Lecture 7. Formatting using Kindle Create: Now you have selected the Kindle create theme. We can start work on formatting the pages of your novel, starting with the front matter, those pages in front of the text. The simplest way to get started is to work at the very beginning of your book and work through the page one section at a time. Don't worry, you can easily change the appearance of every element in the book using the formatting options on the right-hand side panel in your Kindle create screen. Here are the components of an NG novel. The front matter, the body text, and the button back matter. The matter for fiction, ebooks. This is also called the preliminary matter. Basically, the front matter is everything that precedes the main text of your book. The front matter in a modern novel is usually very short and simple. Kindle create calls these book start pages in the text property sidebar on the right of your Kindle creates scheme, you'll see a list of elements for the title pages. These are preformatted templates. Let's start with a title page. Title, page options. The book title, book subtitle, author name apart title. If you have your book in many parts and your part title subtitle. There are also a book Start elements, which has the page title, the first paragraph, a dedication. If you want to use one, an opening quote which many authors like to use, opening Cote credit for that quote. And the copyright tasks. Again, these are templates which could create, has created for you and you know that kVp will accept, don't be frightened to using them. But let's see how we can use them in practice. Let's start with the very first page of your book, the title page. This has the title of your book, a subtitle, if you're using one and the name of the author. You can also add an author or publisher brand image on the title page. Kinda create gives you the key elements of that per title page at formatted for the four themes that you've already seen in the previous lecture. The title page. This is the title page of the case study reasons tutorial is a short cozy mystery called murder and mozzarella by the author Sophie Brent. This is what the title page looked like when I uploaded the document. You recall that we stripped out all the formatting of the novel, including all the vaulting, the title page. So now we have to go in and style this title page using Kindle, correct? The first thing to do is select a theme for the novel and evaluate what the title page looks like for each theme. Since this cozy mystery was intended to be a very light fun read, I wanted something decorative and I chose the amore theme. Unfortunately, when it was converted, the text to me is to decorative and difficult to read. We then go to the formatting option, which is on the right-hand side to change the font. Customize the book titled page for all the themes by going to the text properties sidebar on the right. This is where you will see a list of elements for the booth for title pages. These elements, as a reminder, our preformatted template pages, which you can use to format each part of your novel. You can see there are five options for the title page. Highlight your book title, text, and click on book title. The formatting then starts when the system applies a theme that you had chosen to that book title. You can choose from ammo. Then move over to any of the other three options. If I then click on the formatting option, the second option after elements, I can change the text. Even though it's in the ammo, a theme to one of three others, Bulkeley, which is serif, Amazon MBA, which is some Serif. Monospace. Here is what the title page looked like. What I clicked on. The Amazon MBA, the monospace, the Bulkeley. You see the difference between the three phones. This is the standard non serif and Amazon MBA. Monospace is very graphic and on Serif, and Berkeley is serif. You can then customize the same, use the same process, both a subtitle on the author name. If you have a subtitle for protection, same process, we use this to main title, highlight the subtitle text, go to the right-hand side board and elements, and click on book subtitle. If it looks fine, brilliant if it's not used the formatting option, which this on the right to change the text font of that title subtitle. Do the same thing with your author name. Select your author name on the text. Then go to the elements and click on author name and then format it if necessary, using the formatting option. Say the document, which the Save button at the top right of the screen after each element has been formatted. Right page is the next part of the front matter of your book. Many authors prefer to use this page to describe other elements of their work and links to their website, as well as having a copyright for the individual book. In addition, many indie authors refer to move the copyright page of the back of the book that is not included in the look inside samples that Kindle e-book. In a print book. The top, the copyright page is always just after the title page, but you can't move it. It's not a problem. Copyright page should have all the publishing information about the book, including the publisher's name and contact details, which could be a website address, the date of publication on a publishing history. There's additions and formats. Perhaps you may have an e-book and a Kindle e-book and also a print book. The copyright line, this is given as the copyright symbol, followed by the author's name, copyright holder's name, and the year the first publication. For example, copyright symbol Jane Jones, 2019. Copyright notice and assertion of rights. Then any catalogue details such as British Library at the Library of Congress who hold catalogs of new books. This is for print books only. But it can apply to your book if you already have a print copy of that book. Isbn has lots of confusion about ISP DNS. The International Standard Book Number is the unique identity code for your book in the world. It is 13 digit number. Identifies the title, edition, format, binding, release date, list, price, and publish of any given format of any work in the public domain. It's the metadata for your book. It's everything about that book which is unique to that book. In theory, you should have a separate ISBN for printed book, an audio book, or graphic novel, and each type of digital format you have for your novel, including the Kindle, EPUB and PDF, etc. Items that don't require ISBN is including journals, calendars, music CDs, graphic, pictures, images, photographs, gains, greeting cards, etc. Lots of confusion about ISBN arises to the fact that simultaneous think that's a legal requirement. It is not a legal requirement in the UK or public or violent for nice bn. It conveys no form of legal or copyright protection. It is used solely as a product identification number to allow book wholesalers to handle your book in the system and booksellers to order it. Do you need an ISBN? That depends entirely on your publishing model? Some authors loved the idea of having their name in the print book as both the author and the owner of their own publishing house. It can be great fun coming up with your name or publishing company and designing a logo for the spine of your print book or other books? Isbn for a Kindle e-book, the answer is no, you do not. Simply because amazon gives each book attend digit Amazon standard identification number, an asean, which is unique to the e-book inside the Amazon Kindle store. An ISBN for a Kindle e-book is totally wasted. It will not be used. Do you need an ISBN from Amazon print paperback? The answer depends completely on what you want to do with your print paperback. Don't forget, Kindle create gives you the option to create paperback using the same file. We need to consider this carefully this point. If you plan to publish your printed book as an Amazon paperback, only, the answer is no. You don't need to buy an ISBN. Amazon will provide you with a free ISBN to publish your paper back. The publisher of the book are listed on Amazon and on your book file. And are you book description on the Amazon store? Ask independently published. The key thing to remember is that Amazon will own the ISBN for this book. They have to buy one. Amazon already registered as the publisher of that book, not you. On the other hand, if you want to ship your printed book outside of the Amazon store in the expanded distribution option, then the answer is yes, you do need an ice began to distribute your book through the retail system outside of Amazon. The ISBN is used to order and trachea book and all the wholesale systems and ordering systems which booksellers and other departments use. It does depend entirely on what you're publishing model is. In summary, you don't need an ISBN for a Kindle e-book. And you don't need an ISBN if you only want to print your Amazon paperback inside the Amazon Kindle store to consider. But ISBN, which many authors unaware of ISPs aren't free accepting Canada. And you may need to purchase bundles of ten numbers or more to make it cost-effective. It's always a good idea to consider how many books you'd like to publish in the future before investing in a bundle of codes. How much they cost at the time of writing this book, this course, bokeh in the USA, costs $125 for one ISBN. Bundle of ten, ISBN costs 295 US dollars from bunker. In the UK. One ISBN from Nielsen costs 89 pounds and a bundle of ten ISBN cost 159 pounds. Let's give you an example of the cost for a single ISBN and the cost of tennis bands. When you buy an us begin, you are registering yourself as the publisher of your book. On the registering body will ask for the name publisher for their records. Therefore, consider yourself very carefully what name you're going to give you a publishing company before you register an order, the ISBN. This will be fixed forever with your book. For example, I published my work under the company name Harrington digital. But some of my work, since you know, Harrington is my brand, but I could have chosen a NMR light which are suitable for the genre. And the total book I am publishing, which is linked to your unique author brand. Always do an internet search to make sure the name you have chosen has not already been chosen by the publishing company owner, the indie author, public legal deposit library copies as image to publish in the UK. You'll be invited to provide free of charge, five copies of each printed book for a National Archives. In addition, your supply one copy of each printed book, the British Library. These copies have to be ordered from Amazon paperbacks and approach to the libraries at your own expense. Similar legal deposit library schemes exist in many other countries and you will be contacted by the registration body and asked to supply free copies to them. You do need an iceberg, degenerate the barcode on the back of your print book, which is a requirement for printing. One final point, I want you to consider, how often you notice the publisher of the book when you buy a print book or Amazon. Most readers don't notice the name of the publisher that looking for the content of the book and the author name, they'll think very carefully. Decision has to be a personal one. You must decide for yourself whether you want your novel to be exclusive to Amazon, or it will, or if it will be ordered by other people from bookstores. Dedication page, kinda create has a template for dedication, which you can use. Some fiction authors include a personal dedication in the front of their novel is entirely optional. If you want to format dedication, you can use the formatting tool inside kinda create. By convention. The Texas Education is short and his centered on the page in contrast to the body text, which is always fully justified in Kindle e-books, motor pages. Many published authors, especially in the author's, to further have additional material in the front of their book, which is included in the look inside feature on Amazon Kaepernick ADP e-book Kindle Store. This could include advanced praise for the book about the book and author note and any acknowledgment about the book can be very useful tool for indie authors to attract readers across their mailing list by offering them a free offer and also to introduce your book if it's the first book in the new series, they're very useful pages to have. If you want to include additional front matter pages, such as notes on the author or about this book. You can use the page title template from the book start pages, elements inside Kindle create. The heading of this page will appear in the table of contents if you select it as a chapter heading, but don't forget you don't have to. You can de-select. It. Highlights the title of your additional page, then click on page title in the bookstore at elements and then formatting, if you want to add additional formatting to that title. The table of contents page. The wording of each entry of the table of contents should match the headings and the checks of the book. The electronic table of contents, it's January to automatically buy Kindle create. You don't have to create one in your original text document. But I believe it's always good to do so in the front of your book. Insert a table of contents just before the beginning of the text of your novel. In your original Word document. Check that the hyperlinks are still working. The chapter titles. When you transfer across the Kindle create, you can do this using the Kindle preview is green, which in the top right of your Kindle create two. This will tell you the electronic table of contents generated for the Kindle book, but will also tell you if you scroll through the pages, if the hyperlinks in your table of contents inside your text document are still a working. For example, in the case study book, I created an electronic table of contents in my Word document by using the insert table of contents within the references. Custom table of contents option inside Word. Google Docs use the Edit, Insert Table of Contents. And don't forget, because this is an ebook, you'd be using the hyperlinked as opposed to the page numbers. Kindle create will treat this another page in your document and maintain the links of chapters and headings if you wanted to, you don't need to delete it. In fact, I would recommend that you don't delete it. Many readers find this very useful to have it inside the document as well as electronic. So it is totally up to you, but I think it's useful to have that table of contents inside your document. If you go ahead and create paperback book inside Kindle, create. This table of contents will be automatically converted to page numbers, both on your book on electronically. 9. Lecture 8. Adding and editing Images : Building a Kindle e-book using Kindle create, lecture five, adding and editing images. Create has been designed for text heavy document, such as fiction books and such as novels. But it does allow you to insert, resize, edit, and delete images from your document. There are also specifications whoever which you need to be aware of. The images must be JPEG format, not PNG, and at least a 100 pixels long. Ideally, there should be good quality high definition images so they don't appear blurry on the newer higher resolution Kindle devices and kinda reading apps. So that means at least 300 dots per inch. As we discussed in the formatting of your original text document, the best place for an image to be inserted is below a block of text as a standalone image in line with the text that is not wrapped around or inside a block of text. So that when you load the document onto Kindle create, the image is already in the best place for it. Can do. Create will then allow you to edit that image. To add an image to your e-book. Right-click the location where you want to insert the JPEG image and insert, insert image from the menu. The insert image window appears. Choose the image you want to coat your computer and click open. The image properties are then displayed in the properties pane on the right-hand side of your screen. You notice something called alternative text. This is a few lines of texts which will help blind or visually impaired readers to know what the image is about and why it's in your book. If you have a purely decorative image such as a flourish or a scroll or some other artwork inside your novel. Then you can tick the box which says exclude this image from the screen reader. Also notice there are four boxes for altering the size of the image. Small, medium, large and full, and also the position of the image, left aligned, center, and right aligned. The size of the image is a very important feature to consider. There are multiple options ranging from small. We have 33% of the screen width to fall. A 100% of the screen width. Consider reading experiences on Kindle Apps and kinda reading devices for your e-book novel. If for example, you have an author photograph in your About the Author page, you would like to have that image as a medium-size or large size rather than filling the entire screen. You'll notice that also that you can place an image centrally, which is the ideal position for small and medium images. Large and full images are automatically centered. For an e-book or images which extend beyond the preset margins of your page, the outside of the paper. Using bleed on images in a doc file is currently a pre-release feature within Kindle. Really create. If you think about it. If you have an image inside your novel which is going beyond the margins of your page. This is quite unlikely, but you may have and some artwork such as a background image, which you want to do. So in most cases, the default is placed within the margin. This will ensure that the image is central on the page and then the margins and viewing experience for your reader. Whenever Kindle app the reading on. You don't want the text of your novel to be completely destroyed. Reading experience be completely destroyed by the fact that you have a huge image to deal with. Placing the image edge to edge will lock the content into the profit orientation for the book, which means that your reader can only read your book in portrait mode. This is clearly an issue and Amazon are working on it. Here's a worked example. The case study cozy mystery. The image on the left is the document which I uploaded to kindle create. I started to include an image of my brand logo below the author name, but I wanted to replace him. It was a larger one and slightly different design. To replace an image, right-click the existing image and a pop-up window will appear, which says delete in which our Replace Image, click on Replace Image. You can also go to Edit in the left-hand menu and click on the plus button which has inserted. You can then click on image to add a new image in its place. To remove an image. Just right-click the image and select Delete Image from the pop-up menu. 10. Lecture 9. Formatting the Body Text: Formatting the body text of your book. Each new chapter will have a chapter title and we'll start a new page. And the body text follows below the chapter title. If you've a very long book, you can use parts to separate the book intersections and start each part on a new page. Kindle create software provides two standard serif and two non serif fonts for the header style and the body text. Your novel, I would recommend the Seventh Style averages in the formatting the original texts, we focused on two elements of the manuscript, the chapter title and the body text. Let's start with formatting the chapter title, the chapter heading. Select the heading and go to the elements section on the Text Properties and scroll down to Book body and click on Chatter title. This will format the chapter title based on the theme you selected for your work. If you click on theme, you'll see the default is the modern theme, which was the chat as style here. There's also the classic theme, the Cosmos theme. The theme like the morpheme which matches the genre, which is a cozy mystery. But I'm a little concerned about the size of the text. I'm going to go to formatting and increase the size of that text is currently 28. And grand vibes, I'm going to increase it to that size. That's a bit large. So let's select that and do a medium on 36 would work. Yes, that's fine. This is the chapter title. It's grand vibes for theme are more and are treated to 36. Now let's look at the first paragraph. If you formatted to the normal style by stripping out the original formatting as in the previous presentations. We now have all the texts in the standard format with a small indent at a tiny paragraph break between. Select the first paragraph and go back to elements were in body text, text properties, body text. And you'll see at one of the elements is chapter first paragraph. Click on that. Kinda create immediately creates a space between the chapter title and the text of the first line of your paragraph also inserts a large letter which is known as a drop cap, the first letter of the first line of your paragraph. And it removes the indent. If you go to formatting now, you'll see a whole new range of options has appeared. Let's start with a drop cap. That to me is rather large, so I'm going to highlight the drop cap like that and go across to apply a drop cap. You'll see that the currently it's set at three. I wanted to reduce this to two by clicking the down arrow next to Apply Drop Cap. This immediately takes a delta two lines of text as opposed to three lines of text. The spacing between the letter which has been enlarged and the first letter, the sentence is this gap here. And you can make it wider or you can make it lower. I think that's neater with one letter as a drop cap and the rest rate. Now let's start work for my seeing the body text of your document, the actual novel part of your document. This is the first chapter. We've done the title and we've done the first paragraph. Let's look at the next two paragraphs. There are three elements to consider here. First is the indent, the first line of that paragraph. We set that up when we created the original text document. If you're happy with it, it should be carried over. Leave it exactly as it is. If you decide you want to change it, select a paragraph or two paragraphs. There's no element for that. This is a normal body texts go to formatting. You'll see a whole range of other options appear on your left, right-hand side. Normally looking at is indent the first line, which is this one here. You can start experimenting with it. This is a three we had earlier. You increase it to four or even five or more. Experiment. See what it looks like, change it around. The text, by the way, is fully justified. This is the default normal textures duplication alignment for Kindle e-books. The next element to look at is the space between the paragraphs. This makes a document much easier to read. Again, select a couple of paragraphs of your main body text, not the first, 1, second or third will be fine. Go to spacing. The spacing between the paragraphs is this box here. Look what happens when I increase it with the up arrow. Personally, I think is fine as it is and I want to leave it as it is. I'm not going to change that at all. The next element is the width of the spacing between the lines. You familiar with the term single fonts and single-spaced, double-space? This is the spacing option here. Currently, it's at one which is single-spaced. It's got an up and down arrow here. For those two paragraphs. We can increase it to one and a quarter or 1.5 or even double line spacing. Personally, I'd rather leave as it is. The reason is when we publish our book, the end-user, the reader will be able to adjust that spacing, the style they prefer. Some people like to use very large letter single-space. Other people wanted a half spacing, but let them choose. Right now, you're creating a standard format document which Kindle create can publish as a Kindle e-book. Let's just summarize. We've formatted the chapter title using the theme and then formatting to set the style of this font size. We've looked at the first paragraph and change the drop cap and also any indents. Then we looked at the body text of the document and looked at the formatting of the first-line indent. The spacing between the paragraphs, underlying spacing in the text. If you have made any changes to these two tests paragraphs, you then have to apply the same change manually to every single paragraph of your document. It does not do it automatically. That's why it's important to format the original document for the style you want before you load it onto Kindle create. But this option gives you some flexibility to make the final changes if you wish to. 11. Lecture 10. Formatting the Back Matter of your book.: The back matter of your novel. As you know from previous presentations, there are three parts to every novel. The front matter pages, which has everything before the text of your novel actually starts. The body of your novel where you have your chapters and the content of your novel. And then the back matter pages, which is everything that follows the end page of your novel. Many authors overlook the importance of the back matter when it comes to building a successful email list and supplying funds of your work with contact details and information where they can know more about your books, existing bucket lists, and preorder your new copies. The back matter. Should e-books typically includes the following sequence. This is entirely optional and depends on your individual niche and what your goals are. As a writer. The acknowledgements, some people like to have the acknowledgments in the front of the book, in the front matter, I loved ones leave them here. The reason for this is very simple. If you use the look inside feature on Amazon to test that when you select books to read, you want to get the content of your novel as soon as possible. That's why the copyright page and the acknowledgment page are often moved to the back of the book so that the reader looks inside on the sample pages on the Amazon book description for your book. And they can see what the first page of your novel alike and read the opening chapter. You can also includes a list of other books that you've already written or links to pre-order pages. If, for example you have a series of books out, this may be the first book in the series, but other books and issues have been pre-written, are available for pre-order on Amazon or other bookstores. This is very important for a series. We just like to know that other books of the series have been written and they're not investing a lot of time and then having to wait months and months for the next book in the series to appear. Note from the author. You can use this to thank the reader for buying the book and asking them to leave a review. Book reviews on online stores are crucial to attract and convince browsers on the online store, but your book is worth investing their time and money in. They act as social proof that your book has the content to satisfy what they need in their niche. The next opportunity is to offer your reader something which they would love to receive when they subscribe to your mailing list. An active and engaged mailing list of targeted readers is essential if you want to build accessible in the author business, this is a great opportunity to attract readers to your mailing list. They've just read your novel. They are loved what they've read, and they want to read more. Give them the opportunity to stay in contact with you. It also takes the reader from the Amazon page over to your website and your mailing list where you are in contact them in detail. Amazon does not give you the email address of readers of your books. This way you can capture that email address and be in contact with your readers. Finally, including About the Author page. This is the professional side of your book, where you links to your website and social media profiles. You can add an author page at any point in your book, but mostly the back in the back of your book. You could also include an author photo. How to format the buck motor using Kindle create. Just as the front matter was called the bookstore elements. The back matter is called the book end elements. If you click on elements in the main menu, your text menu, you will see the element range for bookstores and N pages is exactly the same. You have a page title, first paragraph, quotes, copyright text, etc. If you want the title of each page in the back matter is heading one in your manuscript. Then this formatting will carry across as the page title. Just W4. If you want to change the font of that page title for that theme, you can click on the formatting option and alter the font and the font size. This example of a thank you page. I use a page title template from the bookend pages, which has a sans serif font and Amazon MBA to make the headings stand out. You will also note that I did not use paragraph indentation. This isn't body texts. I did whoever at a small space between the paragraphs and break up the text. You'll recall we did that using the formatting. Then the spacing options supply cosine custom formats to any of your bank might have pages such as about the author, the copyright page if you moved it here from the front matter. And more books by the author or other books in the series. Don't forget to invite readers to join your mailing list. Don't be shy. People love your work. They want to share your work with people who would enjoy it. They also would love to keep in contact with you and receive free copies of future books and giveaways. This is the ideal place to invite readers to join your mailing list. They've enjoyed your book. They want to find out more. 12. Lecture 11. The Kindle Previewer Tool: Using the Kindle preview, a tool inside Kindle create. When you finish formatting the novel, you're ready to see how it looks inside the Kindle preview. Normally you'd have to download a separate Kindle preview, a tool. But in Kindle create it is built into the system. All we have to do is click in the top right corner of your screen and you'll see the preview button. You'll be taken to the Kindle preview or inspector screen, where there's a wide range of preview options to select from. By the way, you can use the previous green at anytime during the formatting process to check that your document looks exactly the way you wanted to. Click on the preview screen. The file will open up inside the live kindled reviewer. There's a wide range of tools you can look at. For example, start from the top. You can select which device to look at, such as tablet or phone or Kindle reader, and which font I tend to use booklet, which is a serif font. You can also navigate by page and by Table of Contents. I usually check the preview for the opening pages, not the first chapter looks exactly as I wanted to do. Remember that you wanted to have the focus on the chapter headings and the body text. I always check that the table and phone preview the opening pages in the first chapter look absolutely fine in Berkeley font size three in portrait mode. This is a type of device settings which are most common with readers. If it's easier for you to read, you can increase the font size by clicking on the arrow next to the size button. This is navigating by page where you can go through every single page of your novel, page by page to check a look exactly as you wanted to and that you have remember to change the formatting per chapter headings in texts to create a very consistent reading style. You can also navigate by Table of Contents, and this is very important. Kindle create would automatically generate an electronic clickable table of contents for your novel based on the heading one stars you selected in your manuscript. And when you uploaded your file, go to the navigate by Option and then click the Chevron and then table of contents. This is how your reader will go through your novel. The dog get lost. If needed to add more headings or change them or delete them. Now's the time to go back to your document and make that change inside Kindle create. You can click on any of these chapter headings, make sure they're okay. But also under Kindle creates green, you're live screen. You'll see the chapter headings on the left-hand side of the page as your navigation tool. Once you are happy that every page of your book look exactly as you want it. You can move on to the final step. Click on the Publish button on the very top right. The header bar of your Kindle creates green. You're not ready to publish your Kindle create book as a Kindle e-book. Kindle create will save, save a package of your document as a KPF file to your desktop. Away, you tell it to save it to look out for the KPF extension on your document. This is the fully formatted file which is rater upload **** ADP, to publish your book as an e-book on the Kindle Store. 13. Lecture 12. Step by step instructions on how to publish on KDP: It's time to publish your e-book on kVp using Kindle, create, log onto your Amazon kVp a counter published your kundalini book. You don't have an account, started our homepage and follow the instructions were taken to a bookshelf where you can create a new title, and this case, click on Plus new title, Kindle e-book. We do. So you'll be taken to the first page, which is the Kindle e-book details screen. It's your language of your book, the book title and the subtitle. These both must be on the book cover, the name of the series, and addition number. If you have more than one addition, your name as the author and the contributor's name. The book description statement claiming that you own the publishing rights, keywords, and categories. Let's look at a worked example. At anytime you can go back to ADP and edit any of the details on the book details page. This is a book details page for the murder and mozzarella case study book that we're using in the tutorials, the languages English, the title murderer mozzarella at the king's meat cozy mystery. These are both on the title of the book, on the cover of the book. It's a series kings me cosine history. This is book one of the series. Edition number is the first edition. The name of the author. There are no co-authors. Then we get to book description. This is very important. If you attract a reader who's browsing the Amazon store, who loves your cozy mystery cover or your book cover? They'll then read the blurb, the book description which you write and you create and you put on the book description page on the Amazon store. Think of it as selling your book. It's a pitch. It's a selling document. All ways that you can make your text standout on the in-text on the book description page on Amazon store using simple HTML. Don't worry, I've given resource pages for this where you have links. It can format your description, look description very simply, and copy the code inserted here. If you look at the one I got here, NH3, just take you through it because as an example, h3 is heading three. So it's a heading. Strong is bold, text, M is emphasis, plaintext, and then strong Gunther bolt. Nothing too complicated. Keep it short and sweet and simple. I'm making a statement that I own the copyright and hold the necessary publishing rights. Then I'm adding keywords. Keywords are extremely important. These are the words which readers can type into the Amazon bookstore, which helped them find your specific book. You can use up to seven key words or keyword phrases. Setting up the book. Help set up the best keywords, how to select the best keywords. Think about the search terms you would use looking for a novel in the same genre on Amazon. Then select those keywords. I'm thinking about. What I'm looking for is an element in my book. This is a cozy mystery as a cozy culinary mystery, which specific niche? Then we come to categories. You allow two categories. This is the UK Amazon store. I should hasten to add just slightly different. Categories are crucial. I think of categories as the virtual bookshelves on the Amazon store. Amazon has to know where to put your book. It doesn't do it automatically. It does look at the keyword you've given it and the title and other details of your book. But you can specify exactly where books go. Browse category is a section of the Amazon site where users can find your book. Think of it like sections of a physical bookstore. These are very important. Think about the niche you are in. To find the best category. Click on categories. You'll notice that as fiction, non-fiction, juvenile fiction, comics, education, and literary, we're talking about fiction here. If you click on fiction, you'll find a huge risk list of different types of fiction. I would think from Yahweh, like novels and visionary metaphysical through Romans, psychological, medical. Magic realism and so on. Contemporary women. There is a huge number. You'll notice some of them have little plus next to them. This means there are some categories in that category.
