unable to hit publish. In this beginner's class, you're going to understand
how to overcome perfectionism by first
understanding what causes it. Then you're going to understand
the beauty of deadlines. You're going to
understand the beauty of willingly inviting an
embarrassing moments. Along with a lot of
other cool topics that will allow you to be prolific. Around the end of the class, you'll be given a final project that will allow you to overcome perfectionism for good and
build your online portfolio. If you're ready, I look
forward to seeing you inside.
2. What Causes Perfectionism?: One of the reasons for
perfectionism is due to fear. Because here's what happens. A healthy fear turns into
a gargantuan scary fear. Little fear is good because
the perfection of things. Okay, let me retract my work. Let me make sure that I
fixed anything that I have control over fixing and
then I will publish. This is good fear. It becomes bad fear when
the perfectionist turns a one-month deadline to
a one-year deadline. And this is when
the fear is like, Hey, are you sure you
didn't miss anything? Are you positive? I just check again. If you peel back the sphere or the perfectionist is
really operating with, is, what if someone
doesn't like my work? It doesn't matter if you turn a one month deadline into
a one-year deadline, there's always going
to be people out there that doesn't
like your work. It doesn't matter how many
tweaks you made to it. This is something that
every artist must come into peace width and to come
into peace with it. Perfectionism is
strictly an illusion. You can never satisfy everyone, but simply
understanding. Oh, whoa. So perfectionism
is caused by fear. Is that aha moment that allows
you to eventually change.
3. Dissatisfaction Will Always be There: Being dissatisfied is a part of the creative process
the rider wants. He's done with the book. He's always gonna
be thinking, Dang, I could have taken this
particular storyline with this particular book, the musician, she's
gonna be like, I could've made my
song sound a little bit better if I spend
more time with it. Being satisfied is a big
part of being an artist. The question is, what do you do? Are you someone
who's going to have a negative perception
regarding being dissatisfied? Or are you going to use your
dissatisfaction as a form of raw energy to fuel
more art into the future. If you're smart, you're going
to choose the latter path. Dissatisfaction is a form
of energy that can be harnessed and we channeled
back into your art.
4. Create Deadlines: To use dissatisfaction
towards your favor. Deadlines are a must. See what creativity, what often happens is that it's
easy to be like, Okay, I just need to
be this free spirit. And the more free that I am at a better that
my art will be. That's true to a certain extent. But a creative genius
that is not capable of systematizing their creativity
will eventually go mad. Therefore, it's important
to instill rules. And the more that
you instill rules, ironically, the more
creative that you become. Not only do you become creative, you also become a professional. Therefore, whatever sort of create a vehicle that you're in, it's highly important to incorporate deadlines
into the mix. Let's say you're someone that
creates Skillshare classes. If you decide on a creating one class
a month, stick by it. And within that one month, around the publishing
time period, when perfectionism is
sneaking up on you. That's when you can be like, Look, I don't make the rules. Actually. I do make the rules.
And guess what? I also enforced
the rules as well. It doesn't matter if I'm feeling all this satisfied energy. What I did was I created a deadline and I
must abide by it. Each time that you
follow your deadline. Each time you're getting that dissatisfied energy
and your channel, link it back into
your future art.
5. Accountability Buddy: If you're someone
who finds it very difficult to follow a deadline, another thing that you can do is get an accountability buddy. I think about someone
who's out of shape. If they're out of shape, then most likely they're
going to the gym. And if they're going to the gym, a lot of them are
going to get a coach. The coaches job is
to get this out of shape individual and
hold them accountable. Simply having this coach instill discipline
into this individual. Likewise, if you know
another content creator, then you can pair up with this person and hold
yourself accountable. Make sure you inform each
other of your guises, deadlines, and make sure
that you guys enforce them. And here's the thing. A lot of the times it could
be accountability buddies. So for my brand, I run this daily email list. And this email list
has been growing. And thus far, I
have been writing every single day on this email list for hundreds
and hundreds of days. My ego is invested. Anytime I don't
feel like writing. Anytime I feel unworthy, anytime I'm struggling
with impostor syndrome, I remind myself, Hey, you have a deadline to follow. And not only do you have
a deadline to follow, There's plenty of people from all around the world who have gotten accustomed to you
writing every single day. Are you going to let
these people down? Of course not. You are going to overcome perfectionism
and publish anyways.
6. Evolution vs Revolution: We've talked about using dissatisfaction
towards your favor. The way that you're going
to use dissatisfaction towards your favor is
by creating deadlines. If you cannot enforce
your own deadlines, then get an
accountability buddy. Other than that,
one of the things that we need to
understand in regards to perfectionism is the evolution
versus revolution mindset. See a lot of perfectionist. They have this revolution
mindset where they think that this piece is going
to be the hay maker that automatically
changes their career. Now granted for a
lot of artists, that's exactly what happens. Is this one, hay maker, a piece that they created that influenced the
rest of their career. But if you're looking at
most artists out there, what they have is the
evolution mindset. They keep making these
little tweaks over time. The more that they keep making these tiny little tweaks
over a long period of time. The more that they build
their body of work, the more that they build
their body of work, the more that they
realized that it was never quantity versus quality, it was more so quantity
leads to quality. So half the evolution mindset always been that little
tweaking mindset. If you're tweaking,
what it does is that it allows you to focus
on the bigger picture. And the more that you focus
on the bigger picture, the more that you view each piece that you
publish as a rep. And once you start
to view it as raps, that's when you realize that quantity is eventually
leading to quality.
7. Embarrassment Challenge: The bonus tip is to embarrass yourself and do it willingly. Here's the thing. You don't just want
to embarrass yourself for the sake of
embarrassing yourself. You want to embarrass
yourself in a certain way where it
allows you to grow. So allow me to give
you an example. I run this YouTube channel. And on this YouTube channel, I normally film in my studio. There were a couple
of times where I decided to film outdoors. And each time I filmed outdoors or something
weird would happen. One time I was
filming outdoors and this elderly lady comes
to me and she's like, What are you some
kind of celebrity? I tell her, no, I'm just filming
a YouTube video. And she literally just pulls up a chair and she begins
watching me as I'm filming. I was feeling highly
uncomfortable. Yet I got through
the video anyways. As I was recording, there were a couple
of times where I fumbled and she smiled
when I fumbled, despite me making the mistake, despite me embarrassing myself. I published that video anyways. Once I published it and I
willingly embarrass myself, I realized that
this whole idea of embarrassing herself during
the moment it stinks. But later on it becomes comedy. Often a perfectionist find it difficult to
embarrass themselves. If they even feel like that they're going
to embarrass themselves, then they will do their
best to circumnavigate it. So if you find certain
moments in your life where you can willingly do something that goes
beyond your comfort zone, then you will help your self
in regards to your art. Obviously try to find certain embarrassing tasks
that align with your goals. Because I run a YouTube
channel, therefore, filming in an embarrassing
circumstances or lines under my goals, you to need to find
something similar. And the more that you do it, the more that you
will melt away. Perfectionism.
8. Final Project: For the final project, I
want you to go to a location where there's a lot of
people just walking around. It could be at a park, it could be at the mall. I want you to go to
one stranger and have them give you a certain
topic to speak about. Once you have the topic, I want you to record the video in front
of all the people. You don't need to tell
them to stop or anything. They can just be going
about their everyday life. But you need to be recording
that video without any preparation in front
of all those individuals. You're going to feel discomfort. A part of you is
going to be like, I don't know what if
I fumble my words. All these people,
they're staring at me as I'm recording my video. Does not matter. Finish the talk from
beginning to end. If you fumble, you
fumble, doesn't matter. Once you are done, I
want you to post it on the final project
section right below. I look forward to watching it. If you enjoyed this
