1. Introduction : Welcome to how to ace your next job interview, the only job interview guide you'll ever need in this class, you learn how to make a great and confident impression in your next job interview. My name is Melissa, and I'm leading you through this course. I was 15 years old when I did my first job interview. And as you can imagine, I was very nervous. My mother actually made me fit for this first interview in my entire life. She told me what to say, what not to say, how to dress and all these kind of things. Where since that day, 28 or 29 years have passed. And since that time, I conducted many job interviews. I'm an executive chef actually, and have been working on five different continents and different countries. And I conducted many, many interviews, are recruited a lot of chefs and also I might save, of course, had to do job interviews and apply for different positions. I wanted to grow. I wanted to make career my online classes here to help you, to make recruiters hire you. And here's how I'm gonna do it. You will learn what the purpose of a job interview is, how to prepare for your next interview, how to research the company. What is important to know about grooming and clothing? We will talk about your equipment setup, especially when you do online interviews. Then I will lead you through the 16 most popular interview questions and how to answer them. I will share with you some general interview tips. Also, I will talk about how to properly sell yourself because this is crucial and very important. I will also share with you how to take proper stories because this interconnects with selling yourself and being confident in front of the recruiter. I will let you know what you have to do after an interview and then we do a wrap-up. And of course, I will share additional resources with you with a center Q and A's and other stuff. So you can look forward to this course and also towards resources. By the end of this course, you will be able to conduct your next job interview. And a much more confident manner goal is to make a great professional impression and to land your next job. There are no requirements needed for this class other than that, you have an open-mind and the willingness to learn. This course is for everyone who wants to improve his or her interviews goods in order to stand out and get the job. 2. Essential Interview Tips - Part 1: Now in this section, I want to give you some general interview tips of their menu. So you want to take a pen and a notepad and write these things down if you want. I wanted to start with the most important tip I want to give you, which I already have mentioned also is that you rehearse your question, that you practice your answers basically to the interview question. This is something you need to train and practice, and train and practice and train and practice. Run through your answers, write them if necessary, down on note cards. You also can put or set your alarm on your mobile phone. And then when the alarm when the alarm goes off randomly, that you just try to remember your answer and then just say it and practice it. Believe me, it is very important. You need to memorize your, your answers, not word by word. That's very important to understand because you don't want to sound robotic in our reading from a script or something. That's why it is so important that you tell stories. 3. Essential Interview Tips - Part 2: When we test stories, we use our memory and we just have some images in our mind. Then we'd be basically tells the story from based on our memory. We do not scripted a few. I would ask you, Hey, tell me your first time you you've been in love with somebody. You will remember and you will tell the story to me and the next time I will ask you the same question. Hit maybe a month later ahead, Tammy. Tammy, again, the story how it was for you to be in love for the first time. You would remember the story and you would tell me the story again, but you would use slightly different words. So the storyline is the same, but the words you use different. And that's how this also with an interview because you cannot memorize and you don't want memorize, everything gets impossible. Come up with a story. I will talk about storytelling again later in this section on how to structure a story. Again, because this is very important, but you need to memorize your story and then it will be also much easier for you to talk because it's going to be natural. You want to come across like in a conversation, of course, and I'd like somebody who is reading from a script or memorize everything in order. That's Hank professional, of course, the interviewer, The recruiter will notice what's going on. Everything. You're supposed to come across. Easy, relaxed. 4. Imagine you are on a Date - Part 1: Here are some tips for during the interview. Remember that a job interviews all about selling yourself and pitching, your personality and your skills and experience. And the most important objective during an interview is to give a great and professional and confident first impression to the interviewer. You only have that interview basically to set the ground. Basically a few managed to sell yourself accordingly and properly and successfully during this first term interview, they will call you back there with invite you. And they will send you to the next stages if they're more stages to come. Like in my case, in my industry. Also higher you go up the ladder. As an executive chef, I had interviews where I had people interviewed me 56 times. And human resources managers, general managers, area human resources directors and area general manager. So a lot of it can be a tiring process. So it's sometimes not only it has not only one interview we have to go through, but the first interview sets the tone for things to come. So imagine you are going on a date with a girl or a boy. It's up to you, but you're going on a date. What are you doing? I don't I don't believe that you do not take care of this project. You don't just let it go. You you know, you're going on a date you want to, what do you want to do? You want to impress that person? Let's say take my case. I would have a date with a girl. I would make pretty sure that I addressed properly that my hair is accurately everything that I'm nicely shaved or trimmed or group or whatever whatever your style is. But I would stand in front also in front of the mirror and, and look that I look good because I want to impress this girl. I want to give a good impression. And this is this is dating and we do not leave anything to chance. That's what I wanted to say. Every single detail you pay attention to because it's all about your face, It's all about your personality that's unto you. Don't want to lose face. You actually want to win the heart of this girl in the best-case scenario. So the same it is with interviewing. You want to make sure that you pay attention to every single detail. Please do not leave anything to chance. From my own experience, I can tell you that you cannot be that stupid. To assume that things cannot go wrong. Of course you do not. You will not have total control of everything, what is happening during an interview. But you have control over yourself and how you prepare. 5. Imagine you are on a Date - Part 2: And you do not, there is not such a thing like a perfectly conducted interview. We are all human beings, but what we do mistakes and we learn. But what does also human is to be smart and to prepare, and this is what you can do, and this is what you can control, and this is what you must actually control. The first thing you walk we want to control and pay attention to is that you are be on time, be on time for your interview. That's actually a no brainer, but I still hear stories when people are late for an interview. Some people say, Yeah, you know, the interviewers also late. I'm talking especially now about online interviews. Interviews you do on camera. It happens sometimes it is my experience that recruit US or bosses, especially they have the attempt to have this habit to be a little bit later, a couple of minutes. I don't know why that is, but That's how it is. And you don't want to say he is gonna relate or he was late to the last time, I'm gonna be later this time. No. You want to make sure you are on time what we have spoken about, make sure audio setup as ready that you don't have any internet connection is working. Everything that you can fully focus for the call to come. And this is what I do. I am gonna be sitting when I have an online interview, I'm gonna be sitting five minutes before the actual interview starts. I'm gonna be ready sitting in front of my already switched on laptop or phone. I'm waiting for the call. We would never know. Something last minute happened and then maybe you still forgot something and then you remember it in any try to fix it, don't do that. So 30 minutes, this is what I DO. Third, 30 minutes before the interview, I set everything up and double-check everything. And then five-minutes before I'm ready, sitting in front of the camera just waiting for the call. 6. How to tell a good Story - Part 1: Next tip, storytelling. I know you were probably, maybe already bored about this topic, but I want to emphasize and mention it one last time during this class. Storytelling is so important. I'm not claiming that I am the greatest storyteller. No, I'm not. I'm improving every day and I also read books. I have read books about storytelling because you need to get familiar with that. Storytelling is a great tool. And if you are a great storyteller, even better view our republic speaker someone now. But for the sake of job interviews, you also want to be able to tell stories. You don't need to share great and emotional stories for half an hour during a job interview. We talked about it already, but you need to be able to tell stories that's the best. You don't need to do it. But I recommend it because stories, they stick in the mind of the listener, can associate much better. And therefore, they can relate all so much better because we are human beings and human beings can relate to stories and you memorize them much better. We all remember being kids listening to a bedtime stories from our parents in our storytelling is the oldest way of communication. This is how our ancestor actually also trends transmitted communication or communicated, or transmitted messages to their family members or children's or storytelling is an age old thing. Very effective. And you also want to use it during the interval interview. And of course, you need to understand why storytelling is so important. I just mentioned that to you now. Again, I want to share with you the method I use when I tell stories. Not only in interviews, I'm using the soar method, the method we talked about that already. So you have a situation, this is the basic structure of any story. You have a situation then as an obstacle, and then you take action. There's some action being, being done and then there is a hopefully positive result. This is also the basic structure of many movies and plots and books and stuff like that. So you want to understand that structure and it's pretty simple to understand because stories are simple. And I give you a first-hand personal experience to again demonstrate and to go through these four different steps. Situation obstacle, the action I took and the positive results. 7. How to tell a good Story - Part 2: Here's the situation, Here's the story. A few years ago when I worked for a large international beat result to tell an Asia, I was in charge of many different kitchens. We had about seven outlets. One of these outlets, one of these restaurants was at the beach. It was called the sunset beach restaurant, very beautiful place. And in there I had a kitchen team. I had a chef who was in charge of the team, and I had some rank and file people working there. That was the situation. One day, I was approached by one of these rank and file members and he wanted to talk to me face-to-face in person behind close behind closed doors in my office. I said, okay, his name was Tim, so please Tim, come inside, Let's have a talk. What's up? How can I help you? And he shared his story that he is not getting along with the chef at a sunset beach restaurant. And I asked him why and he said the other chef is grumpy. He is not respecting us as tone is disrespectful. And I took note of that during that meeting in a few days later. Up onto that part, I didn't take any action. Few days later, the similar situation happened. Another rank and file staff of exactly that same restaurant came to see me, wanted to talk to me and complaint eventually about the same thing that the chef is disrespectful. His tone, the way he talks is just annoying and frustrating to the staff. So that was the obstacle. Now I had a case, now I had had an issue in the kitchen and being a chef, a leader, and a manager, that's my job to handle and fix that. So of course it was an obstacle and it was a problem because I cannot have I'm a team split up because somebody is not behaving even he is the chef. And especially if he is the chef, he needs to know how he treats this stuff well. Long story short, I call it this chef into my office. This is now the action part. We had this situation, the setting situation or setting doesn't matter. Then. Now we talked about the obstacle. Now we come into the action section. What actions did I take? I call this chef into my office. Awesome. We had a talk face-to-face and behind closed doors. 8. How to tell a good Story - Part 3: It was making him aware of the problems, the obstacles, what is happening in his kitchen that his staff complained to me, etc, etc. So we had a good talk. He said he will fix it, he will walk on that. And that was the first step, the first action step, then it took another step, I call it for a team meeting the entire kitchen team of the sunset beach restaurant. I invited to come actually, I did not invite to come into my office. I went to the kitchen, we sit down and errors trend as auto assigned as a sign of me to show respect to them. And we sat down altogether, the chef and all the rank and file staff. And we discussed the Meta very openly. Everybody could have his or her say. And also the chef because not everybody has his or her story to share. And I tried to provide an environment where everybody can openly talk and that we can openly discuss. And most importantly, that we, based on this open discussion, can come to a positive outcome and solution. That was the action I took. And what was the result? The result was a positive outcome. This meeting with my kitchen team over there with the chef and the rank and file people. It was a good thing. It was a good idea. And it turned out very well because immediately after the meeting, because I was monitoring it, of course, for the next few days and weeks. But immediately after this meeting, the relationship between the chef and the stuff had had improved, monitored it, and I must say there was a big improvement of cost ahead adjustments to be done because we are all human beings. But this meeting, this open, outspoken meeting where everybody could talk and share his, her concerns and frustrations and expectation's. That was a good thing. So that was the story. You know, there was a situation, there was a setting, there was a big obstacle, a big problem. I took action and it had a lucky, lucky the positive outcome. I don't want to say luckily, but because you can, you can have a lot of influence over, over this, of course, as a leader and a manager. But all I wanted to say is that you take care of that storytelling part and think carefully also what kind of stories you want to share. 9. Do not ramble on too long - Part 1: Another tip I want to give you is that when you tell your stories or when you craft your stories that please do not use stories where you put out your own fires that is not reflecting positively on you. Also, when you make statements during your interview, for example, you would say, Oh, you want to say I am a great team player or I am great at managing time. That's not enough to make a good impression. You want to say a little bit more in the detailed, you want to mention a time when you could actually prove that you were managing your time where? Because the statement, I am a good time managers to two generic doesn't say much, it's just a statement. And recruit or the interviewer doesn't even know if it is true. And that's why you have to mentioned at time a situation where you can, through storytelling or through anecdotes, that you can draw the picture that people understand and that you give a clue and the hint and also approve. You were actually have this quality you are claiming to have. The next step is that you keep your answers short and relevant and that you use specific targeted words. I will have a list in the resource section as mentioned already before, where you can look these words up there. Typically there are a lot of what's gonna be a long list of action and keywords you want to incorporate into your entire pitch, but also in your story-telling. Remember, you want to give a keep and maintain always a positive frame. And in order to do that, now, our language consists of words and we want to use positive, strong, powerful words which convey a great attitude and enthusiasm and motivation. 10. Do not ramble on too long - Part 2: The next tip I want to give you is, don't ramble on too long with your answers. This is also a little bit my weakness. I mentioned this before, that because I think I have a lot of stuff to say and everything I have to say is so important, That's what we tend to think. But I had to learn that also. I had to really practice this to keep my answers short. One or two, either one to two minutes, something like that. I think it's fair enough time to share your stories and give you answer. But on the other hand, the interview also needs to give you some time to properly explain yourself, because this is what the interview's, therefore, they cannot just expect you to say everything in 2020 seconds, that's impossible. But on the other hand, also you have to pay attention that you really keep, keep your answers focused, short and concise. Don't ramble on too long. If I know how it feels, you know, you want to share everything because you think it's all important, but put yourself in the interviewer's shoes. Sometimes it happened to me also that the interviewer just talking and talking and talking. And it really gets boring. And because I also want to talk and share, but there are also interviews. Interviewers are recruiters who don't follow that rule or maybe don't know about that rule. 11. Why you should exaggerate : The next step is, again, a reminder, you want to research the company before your interview. I'm saying there just to remind you because this is so important because it gives you a great advantage. Knowledge is power studied, a website studied, and newsletters if they have get familiar, not only with the business, but also what they do privately and all. If they have other projects going on, charity work, community work and things like that. This is also always had food when you can sneak this information into your answers, also ensure them that you know what's going on. One word about exaggeration, I've mentioned this already a few times during the class. Also. Maybe some people would disagree with me, but in my opinion and from my experience and since we are talking about a job interview, which is all about selling, I find you are allowed to exaggerate a little bit here and there, but you have to be careful though, that you are not lying. Okay? You can lie. I'm not saying you cannot lie or don't lie. But be careful if you are being caught lying or later it turns out that you are not performing in your job. Let's say they hired you based on your interview performance and you told them great stories and deliver managed to make a great impression and sell yourself and blah, blah, blah. And they hired you because they get the impression that you are the right person for the job and then you are not performing according to the impression they had during the interview. I mean, needless to say that you screw yourself or you have would have screwed yourself. But a little bit exaggeration is completely fine. I mean, what a woman do when they going on a date or when they go outside, they put makeup on steel. And even the most beautiful woman, not saying, Oh, I'm so beautiful by nature. I don't need to put makeup on, for example, but they're still put make-up on because to emphasize a little bit here and there, and a car dealers doing the same. Even though as a Ferrari is sitting in his sale lot, Everybody knows how, what a Ferrari is. If he wants to satisfy Ferrari, even I would be a Ferrari freak. Ferrari Baia And I collect Ferraris, let us say, which I didn't do. But if I would collect Ferrari's, I would know a great deal about Ferraris. Now I see that model in this sets lot there, and I want to buy it. I know what a Ferrari is, how it performs. And you can trust me. The salesman will still have that cup polished before setting and also it's a little bit on top. I exaggerating. Absolutely. Okay. But you have to be careful, not that you exaggerate too much and maybe share stories or facts which are actually not true. That of course, will backfire. 12. Use the Interviewers Name : One very important tip I want to give you here is that you, during your interview or during any conversation basically, should use the interviewer's name. The interviewer, of course, introduce yourself to you. We mentioned his horror name and use the name during the conversation from time to time. Why a status for psychological reasons? Because we love to hear our names. That's just like it is. The names are the sweetest thing we want to listen to. So if we are able to mention their names from time to time, especially when we have something important to communicate, then it's a good and great thing to do. It is also persuasive because interviewing few are applying for a job and you're sitting in a job interview, you are trying to persuade the recruiter to hire you using names from time to time, using their names during your conversation and storytelling creates rapport. The connection between you and this person, which is very important and it's all about creating rapport, having a good chemistry going and name-calling. I mean, saying the first name of the person from time to time is very important and useful tool to achieve that rapport. And the way the interviewer, CSU. 13. Smile and look into the Camera : When you sit in front of a camera, especially in front of online interview, put a light smile on. This is something I still need to practice. I know it doesn't us a little bit my weakness also. But when you sit there and recruit as talking to you, then that has been discovered by people who researched and sad it's not coming from you. So when you sit there and just put a light smile on, then you come across much more sympathetic. Instead of looking with a long or straight phase. Like I said, this is something also I had to practice. But it's actually quite easy if you just listen to the recruiter talking. You just have to remind yourself to put a light smile on. You can also double-check on the screen. And that gives us the impression that you are more, more likable. Also, mentioning again, please, when you do online interviews, look into the camera. It's the same way you look into the other person's eyes when you have a face-to-face interview saw. When you are sitting in a face-to-face interview, of course, you look the person, the recruiter, and into his or her eyes. I assume that's the case. You do not just like talk and look in different directions. So it's actually a no brainer, but you come across very insecure in unconfident and not professionally. And it's the same with online interviews. It's even a little bit more difficult because there's only one eye. That's the little black dot there where you have your safe to false, have to force yourself to look into that thing. You can do the test. This is also what, what I advise actually to record yourself and practice. Craft your answers to the questions. Think of a great story you can choose and tell. Then Ric, record that on video. Yes. I know many people don't like to do that because they don't like to see them. Saves on cam, which I can confirm it's the same with me. I have felt very uncomfortable in the beginning and sometimes today it's like it is everybody has a little bit different. But with practice and great practice, you get used to it. And now, for me, looking into this black dot here is actually convenient and I feel comfortable even I see my now I'm looking at the screen, I see myself moving them around and everything, but I'm used to it already. But that is an important little detail. You can make the test record yourself for one or two minutes and then make the test look into the camera speaking something. And then for the second shot, you look away and look, you look at the screen and you will see the difference in R. It is much more better for the connection with UNT interview of your straight look into the camera. 14. Do not interrupt : One other tip, very important also I want to mention here is let the interviewer talk and finish his or her statements, sentences or questions. Some of you might now say, Okay, hey, my say, well, that's a no-brainer. If you want to be polite, of course you let the other person talk. But from my own experience, I must say, I've done these mistakes before. During an interview. I was not I'm letting the interview of finishing his or her statements and I just kind of cut them off in the middle of the sentence because I wanted to say something or I wanted to mention something, not because I didn't like the interviewer, But I felt so important and I thought this stuff I have to say is very important and I have to say it now. Therefore, I cut this person off. It is not a good thing to do. Actually, my intention was a good one because I just wanted to make a good impression and I want to share as much as possible. I want to share audit positive stuff. I wanted to show interviewer that I'm capable and knowledge attribute and I know a lot of things, blah, blah, blah, but it can backfire. And you can make the test when you let us say go on YouTube or you watch TV, for example. And you watch any professional interview regarding regardless of the content and how professional people conduct interviews they question is being raised to the other per person and then this person is allowed and will be given time to answer and full. And I'm not talking about the debates or anything. I'm talking about true professional interviews. And when you've watched professional interviews on TV or on YouTube, then you will notice that the guy who answers the question will be given also time to talk. And then when he finished his answer, then the next question is being raised. There is no cutting or anything else or over, over talking or something like that. So this is something we tend to forget because we take ourselves sometimes or most of the time, two important, while we have to say as important, we want to convince the other people from what we know and we barely listen to the other person who is. We're just basically weight that they finish their statements and we can talk. And that's a big mistake. I made these mistakes and I managed to fix that. So to keep this in mind, bite your tongue if necessary, write things down maybe while this person is talking about, please do not interrupt while they're speaking. This is also a sign of that you respect that person and also assign that you actually listen carefully. Because when you are, when you always interrupt his person, then it's disrespectful and you just have to put yourself in the other person's shoes. If you talk all the time, somebody interrupts you because he thinks you saw important and you start not to like that person anymore. 15. A Word about Body Language - Part 1: The last two tips in this section I would like to give you is that while you are talking, use your body language, use your hands, use your hand gestures. This is also something I still need to practice. Actually, not only relevant to job interviews, but also to online classes, for example, or other stuff you do in front of the camera. Because when you, when you use your whole body, you move your head and you move your hands and everything, then you come across much more professional and you can emphasize on different points. Much better. Instead of just sitting in front of the camera with a long face and not moving anything that like I do now, like a robot. And also we'll talk like a robot and hello, my name is Marcel and I would like to apply for the job. And please do not ask me any silly questions because I don't know how to answer them. So of course I am. I'm acting now what? You need to practice this, everybody's a little bit different and I know the feeling when you sit in front of the camera. It is it's tension. I feel always that when I go into a job interview which has face-to-face, it is for me more convenient. And I think it's because we are human beings and human beings are social beings. And human beings. They live from personal interaction. And it's just naturally, you come, you walk into a room, you'll say hi, you shake hands, you sit down. If you make yourself comfortable and then the conversation can go pretty much relaxed and smooth hopefully. But sitting in front of a camera is still a different thing. It's a little bit neutral. You see the other person on camera of course, but you, the way we evaluate also the way our mind, the human mind is evaluating and also judging other people depends to a great, great deal on subconscious interaction. 16. A Word about Body Language - Part 2: When you have face-to-face meetings, there's a lot of subconscious interaction between two human beings. Are other human beings going on in your subconscious mind is evaluating constantly this person likable and this and that. And this is not happening on online or on Cam. Yes. Your mind is still able to evaluate but certain things it cannot. That's why probably we are a little bit tension or nervous or just too stiff when we when we are sitting there in front of the camera. And another thing is also that you can still see yourself, Linnaeus and that's irritating why it's you when you are in a face-to-face interview, you don't see yourself. You only see the other person. And there was also no big mirror behind that other person so that you could seal serve you. So it's a natural setting. And talking in front of the camera is actually not a natural setting. You only can overcome this by practice and practice and practice. And the last tip, this section, the very last one is again, just a reminder. At the end of each interview, if the recruiter asks you if you have any questions, please say yes that you have a couple of questions. And then we talked about that already before. What to say? What kind of questions to ask. And even the recruiter is not offering that or is not asking you if you have any questions, every good recruiter should do that anyway. I didn't say there is a recruiter who is not mentioning that. Then at the end of the interview, please ask them. Yeah, thanks for sharing everything. Mr. or Mrs. and I have also a couple of questions. Is it a bit at a mayor asked these questions and then of course they will let you ask this question. Again, it's all about showing interest that you are committed. And again, that's a tool, actually asking questions at the end of the interview of your interview is a tool, a clever tool to market yourself. 17. After your Interview what are the next Steps - Part 1: What do you do after your job interview? You have managed this. You told a lot of stories you impressed, hopefully impress the recruit and everything, and they are most likely not able to tell you straight away what the outcome is or was from that interview because they have many candidates stood to interview. It depends a little bit also on the recruiter, sometimes they share some information if they are open and transparent to you. Ich, good recruiters actually are. They would let you know, hey, mast cell in my case, I must say, just for information we have. The interview went very well from my point of view was a great chat. For your information. We have two more candidates to interview. And after we have done this, I think by middle of next week, we should be able to give you an update on the status of your application. So that would be the idea case, the ideal situation and information you should get from a recruiter after your job interview when you almost about to finish this session. But it's not all the time happening. It's not happening all the time. And you are it is legit to ask if the recruiter is not mentioning anything about further progress, then it's legit to ask. You can ask the question. Mr. and Mrs. what are the next steps now? From now on and then they will let you know. So far so good, but you should stick then to disagreement, okay? What you should not do is to push the company after the interview, let's say one or two or three days to give you an update or anything on what's going on with the progress of your application. Don't do that. You have to remain patient. I know what I'm talking about because there were times when I desperately was looking for a job and I had some interviews going, I've finished some interviews. Then. Some of them said, Yeah, thank you very much, blah, blah, blah, and we're gonna get back to you soon. What does assume means? But you have to learn to be patient and to not bother this employer or recruiter. 18. After your Interview what are the next Steps - Part 2: They are interested in you. They will let you know there we'll come back to you. If they are not interested, then they will not get back to you, or they will get back to you and we'll let you know that they were not get picked to you in the future. I know it can be very, very annoying because you have your own sketch Studio, you have your own timeline, maybe you need urgently a job, you need money urgently of for whatever reason you applied. But these companies, in order to have a different timeline and you do not really know what's going on inside the company. What is the timeline? I have had interviews which were going very rare. And later I found out that these companies hiring people not urgently in order we'll just pre screening candidates for the next 345 months. Because let's say that my interviewers during the summer time and they actually were hiring only for winter time. Of course, the recruiter should let you know and you need to kind of find out during the interview what the next steps are. But even they tell you to not push them, do not write any e-mail. Ask what's going on and what is the process on my application and do not call them or anything. Just remain patient okay. And continue with your interviews. Apply. I'm pretty sure you have not only applied for this company, then apply for many companies. That's what I do. And then you have an interview and then you have another interview, have another interview, and then you put your money on different horses, so to speak in order it's the smart thing to do. One of these horses will be the winner. And then if one company is coming later or much later and it's probably still interested you and want to offer you then you assigned already another offer. Then you can say, I'm sorry, UTLA, it and I have decided already join a different company. 19. Prepare but expect the unexpected - Part 1: Wow, you have come a long way in this class. And we approaching slowly the end now. And I want to say something in conclusion, a few things I want to mention again and remind you. The first thing I want to let you know is that every job interview is in one way similar, the structure is similar. They're all different. So keep that in mind when you prepare and I will run through a few points now to better prepare you for this. I've mentioned this before, but it's worth reminding, also reminding you that the questions are all similar. But of course they can vary. Some recruiters, they follow the protocol. The day are really good question after question after question. The interview is really structured. You need to prepare for this. I taught you in this class what you have to pay attention to. Then you have other interviewers are recruiters which are totally different. They are very relaxed, they're very casual. Digests want to have it, it seems that they just want to have a cheat sheet with you when you have the conversation on the phone, or on video, or even in person face-to-face. And everything seems really relaxed. And you even might think, Hey, we're talking to an old body, which is actually a great thing. And these kind of situations also make a few very, very comfortable. And I think this is also the intention of these people, but I don't know if they do it intentionally. I think it is really, uh, depends on the personality of the recruiter. From I can only speak from my example here. I'm also the kind of guy who rather talks to people in person, of course. And I do not study so much their CVs, resumes, of course, I have a look. I want to know what they experienced in whether, whether it worked before. But for me it's very important to personal chemistry. I want to see them, I want to talk to them. And my interview style is also more casual because at the end of today I have to work with these people. In the kitchen. In the kitchen is a high paced environment. At a, it can be a stressful environment. And that's why chemistry and personal rapport is very important. And I have mentioned this before. I have personally experienced the weirdest interviews, or let's say outcomes of interviews. I told you the story of my card and experience. Great company. But also probably at the time one of the toughest selection processes, very structured. I know many people who failed. 20. Prepare but expect the unexpected - Part 2: As a matter of fact, when I was applying at this Ritz-Carlton hotel, it was in back in the Middle East. I remember many years ago, it was in 2007. The executive chef who wanted to hire me at the time told me everything about the interview process and he he admitted that he also had to go through this hardcore interview process. He was completely tired and he was sweating a lot during the interview that that is what he was admitting to me. But he was just honest to me. What you wanted to tell me basically is that mast cell, please make sure you prepare properly. It's gonna be a tough thing. And obviously he also passed the interview. Otherwise you would not have been the chef in this hotel, but tough stuff. But I also had other experiences in a way, I received a phone call and we had a few chats on the phone with the manager and the auteur director and then a job done within like what, 24 hours? I had a it had a job and I didn't need to do anything. No silly questions. Stupid questions are difficult questions or psychological questions or behavioral questions or other kind of stuff. Never happened to me. Though. You need to prepare. And I know for myself that I tended to be lazy. I always felt too comfortable, too confident. Let's put it like this during my previous job interviews and I also had to learn hard lessons. I was also thinking, I know I know how to handle job interviews. I've done many before. And it's true I've done many, many job interviews where I have applied for a new role and I thought I have great experience and I also felt very comfortable. But then, believe it or not, I had interviews come up when I was sitting there and they asked me questions where I did not know the answer and that was very embarrassing for me. And I wanted to change that. I don't want to sit in front of a camera, in front of a personal and don't know the answer or look stupid. 21. Get ready for some Job related Questions - Part 1: I remember one particular time, it was two years ago when I applied for the z chefs and the Indian Ocean. And I remember very clearly that because I knew about my laziness. I like I said, I'm feeling comfortable. I always approached this interview situation like, I know I would handle it. I have good experience and maybe they had some tricky questions that we asked, but I will hand it on the spot. I will hand it this on the spot. And that's the most stupid mistake you can make. Do not try to attempt or do not think you can handle this question on the spot. That means without preparation, I mean, this is maybe one in a million chance that you will end up. I don't, don't put yourself in this misery. Prepare yourself. And that's what I did when I applied for disease shares. I had a final interview with general manager of the hotel. And I told, I forced myself Maasai craft goods stories and as set down brainstorm, that's not my strength actually to sit down and brainstorm and write things down because I am also lazy. I admitted in also I about I forced myself to do it. I crafted a good story and I found that story very compelling, a nice Also I was convinced by my own story. And then during the interview, indeed, the GMS meter general manager asked me a specific question regarding my background or what motivates me and I pulled out or put out that story and I told him the story and long story short, he wanted to hire me. And Diana, I knew it was the right thing to do, was the right thing to deliberately craft this story for this particular interview, because I haven't done this before. I knew about storytelling, of course, and I incorporated already a few stories into my interviews part. I was too lazy. I thought I just can pull it off, but few times also hit a dead end where I could not come up with an example or a story. I wanted to share this with you because I have gone through this experience. If you prepare properly, then who will be much safer, okay, then the next thing is that you also want to prepare, of course, for JOB relevant questions. Job relevant questions are questions, questions which referred to your job. So these questions, what we have talked about in this online class or more, these general questions you will encounter a lot. But of course, depending on your industry, depending on your job, what you do, they will ask you questions for me. I'm a chef. They will ask me questions related to the kitchen, to food costs, to hygiene, and all that kind of stuff. 22. Get ready for some Job related Questions - Part 2: This is what I also do during my interviews. So in addition to these general questions, these 17 questions we have handed during this class, there are, of course, these other job-related questions, but you don't know what kind of questions they will ask. And also I do not know. And as it's the same story here, totally different things. Some interviewers, they want to know everything, and some other interviews they don't seem to care at all. About. I remember one time I had an interview in Kuwait and I can tell you already know that I did not, that I didn't pass the interview because I failed some very important questions. And these questions are job-related. This safety and security system in place in the food industry, it's called HACCP, Hazard Analysis, critical control points system, which is not implemented almost everywhere, worldwide and at least many five-star hotels, but also L and K, two rings, etc, etc. You might have heard about it or not. And this interviewer wants the corporate chef. We had a gradient of view, a little chitchat and everything was going well. And then he asked me, Hey, myself, Would you mind if I ask you three questions regarding HACCP, food safety management system. And I said, I'll go ahead and I knew immediately that I suck at this things because I did not prepare for that because I had to dozens of job interviews during the past, let's say ten to 15 years and barely somebody asked me for these HACCP rules. Even it is common common doing in the kitchen, common knowledge. But it is very specific and detailed knowledge you actually, as a chef needs to know and I know it. But there are so many things to know and to consider. And this guy pulled out three questions which I think to I failed to answer. I gave a wrong answer, slightly wrong answer. One question, I got it right. But I knew already that he would not be satisfied with that. So all I want to say is just anticipate certain job-related questions. You will not anticipate all of them, but, you know, just try to imagine a few would be the interviewer, would be the recruiter. What would you be interested in? Of course, depending on your situation, your job, and your background, if you work in the financial industry, they're probably hammer you with a lot of financial data, facts and statistics probably, I don't know. So just keep that in mind. This but this is really unpredictable. In my, in my profession and my industry, that stuff, this job relevant questions are very so unpredictable. And this is the thing we really don't know how to prepare. I also, as an executive chef, you have to have great financial skirts. It's all about food cost and labor cost and knowing all about purchasing prices, dealing with vendors, getting the best available product for best available price or but I always prepare for these questions. Budget, budgets and profit and loss statements and revenues and restaurant revenues. But barely any general manager ever wanted to hear from me of a specific details, but I still prepare because you never know. I want to be prepared and not burn my fingers. 23. Why you should evaluate yourself - Part 1: After the interview eyes, I also suggest that you evaluate yourself. Okay? I know that's a lazy thing to do. Many people don't like to do it, Even me, I admit, but it's better to give you an evaluation. Of course, don't be too hard on yourself. And just try to figure out what you can improve. And that's what I always also tried to do. Take one or two points, which I was happy with, and then take maybe one or two points which you are not so satisfied with. I always do this after every interview and always one or two points which I could have improved, all have to improve in the future to do this evaluation. That is a good thing to do, even not so comfortable doing this. Also then as mentioned before, again, a very important reminder. All your answers, everything you need or want to say or you find you want to hammer on or mentioned during the interview. Again, write it down on your cheat sheets here and attach them the wall or anything around your setup when you are in an online interview, of course, to look at this, these cheat sheets. And in case you need to, if you are in a face-to-face interview in an office somewhere, of course, it's more not more difficult, but you don't have access to all your paperwork. You cannot just excuses and tidy Recruiter. Let me let me let me check my notes first what I have to answer. You know, I'd also as I mentioned before, I know when you sit face-to-face with someone who has a more natural environment and situation and then you, I think more relaxed. For me, it is like they're sitting in front of the camera is a little bit more tension. So that's why I also do this because I want to have a proper answer for every question. I don't want to sit there and have a blank mind because you're still nervous and excited. You want to do a good job. You want to present yourself from your best side so you're automatically put yourself under pressure. And we all know what happens when you are under pressure. Your energy and your brand and your mind is not sometimes flowing so fluently than at any. There might be a block on an even a blackout. And the worst thing which can happen, even you will have prepared a lot for the interview. Be smart and just have some notes lying around or attached to the wall. 24. Why you should evaluate yourself - Part 2: Again, interviewing or going into an interview, going into a job interviews all about selling yourself. You want to make a first grade cotton production because you want that job. But also keep in mind. Even the greatest salesman is not selling 100% of the time. And of course also, in my experience or from my experience, I can tell you that I did not lend every job after every interview. And I will not go into all these little, all these different reasons which are contributing to the selection process. There are simply too many. But we have to keep this in the back of your mind. I'm also tending to think that I am not that I think I'm the best, but I'm very confident in my experience and my skills and I think also my interview skills are great that they have developed over almost three decades. Even, especially when I think I have done a great job. And you feel that you feel when you have done a great job. Interviewing, when you had the chemistry going with the interview with the recruiter, the interview and everything was smooth and nice. And you had a great feeling. You also happy and, and you are satisfied with your performance. Then you might think, oh, yeah, you will get to this job and then they call you back or they don't call you back or you're writing an email said they have there, select the selected another person. It can be very disappointed happen to me. 25. Frustrating Things can happen : A few years back when I applied for a job in the Caribbean. That was also a tough in terms of how many stages I had to go through. And I mentioned this before already. I had that was deity. The interview with the most interview stages I had first a the first interview was with representative of the human resources office. The next interview was with the director of Human Resources. Then I had a general manager and I had a group director of Human Resources, Group Di group GM group General Manager. So I had like five, the Corporate Chef also, I think at the end of the day and within a span of several weeks, I had six interviews only for one job for this particular company. And it was a really all these six interviews I've had really great, the people who are great, very friendly, accommodating. We had great chats going on and we are good talks from start to finish. And the crazy thing was that I was at a time in Asia and the Caribbean is very far away obviously. And the time difference was it was a crazy I was like I had to wake up like in the middle of the night, like one AM in the morning because the interview was two AM to AM in the morning. My time, local time, asian time. Because it was like an afternoon time in the Caribbean or something, I guess. I did I did commit and did a great effort. I put put in a ladder, lot of effort to conduct these interviews because this is I take this stuff serious. I'm not saying Oh, no, I'm sleeping. I could have said that, but I didn't because that's who I am. I take this stuff serious. I commit I want that job, so I prepared doesn't matter. I'll wake up at 01:00. Am. I prepared within Ready to go to Am. I had six different interviews over a course of several weeks, always like around two AM in the morning, everything went great. That's what that was my feeling. And then you get an email saying that they were not selected for the job. And I can tell you very honestly, after this experience with trainee dot to bog or that was the country I was applying for. I was, I was very, very disappointed. This is what happens. That's, that's how life is. You will not all the time sent a 100%. It was true for a couple of days, I was really down because I could not believe that they did not select me. Because normally, when you go through when you go through so many different stages, you, That's a very good sign that you basically the favorite candidate. But anyway, why do you have to do is just be frustrated for a couple of days, but then you have to be able to pick yourself up and just keep going and going and going. 26. Keep going stay patient and improve - Part 1: There was a time when I mentioned this before when I send out like over a 100 applications, was about five years ago when I wanted to do at the time I was in Europe and I wanted to urgently go back to Asia and I was sending application of the application of the application of the application and no reply, nothing. You know, when you send two or three applications, you don't receive any feedback then. Okay, good. Nothing. But after 2030405060 and so on, and you barely get any feedback. Then what happened with me as you start to doubt yourself? This is the last thing I want to mention in this class and talk about because I wanted to of course, to end this class on a high note. But before I do that, I want to share this story because eventually ended in a positive outcome. But yeah, it happened to me. I was starting to doubt myself and my performance because it used to be like that that I could easily get and land a new job. I sent out a few applications. I had some interviews and then they're done. But during this time in 2016, that was five years ago, I also have to say that the situation in my industry, in the hospitality industry had changed a little bit. So for different reasons, it was more difficult to apply for a job by but I kept going and going and going out throughout these applications. I wanted to get into an interview and I wanted to land at least a job interview, but nothing was happening. So I really started to doubt my myself. I really thought I have bad luck. Even it has nothing to do with bad luck, but this is how you start to think when you always get a disappointing experience after another. This is how we take. 27. Keep going stay patient and improve - Part 2: What did I do? I looked at my resume. I thought maybe my CV, my resume is something wrong with that. So every day I was tweaking it, improving it, changing sentences, taking words, outputting works in. So I really, really improved my resume a lot until I had a finished product and I was really proud of my severe and I said That's it as normal problem with that CD. That's who I am. It is perfectly crafted and I don't know what the issue is, why nobody is interested. But again, you have to keep going and going and going. Don't, don't doubt yourself. The only thing you are allowed to do is to keep going. And then I said to myself, you know, I have a great resume. It's not a matter of luck, it's just a matter of keeping going, keep going and moving forward. And that's what I did. And you have to be patient also. That's what I had to learn because I am by nature I'm a rather him and patient are impatient person. And I had to learn that. So two things. If you are rejected, if you're even if you're not invited to a job interview or even if you are being rejected many times, I know it is frustrating and I suggest that you have a look Maybe On have a look on your severe checkout, your resume, check audio severe check your documents. Are they're all good and order and everything. Maybe you have a professional person looking over your severe to change a few things, but also, yeah, maybe it is because of your performance during the interview. That can also contribute to negative results. But therefore, we are doing this class here together to teach you and to train you. But if you feel you have a great savy and if you feel you have a great performance and you can answer all these questions very confidently and perfectly. Still. There is no guarantee that you will land the job. Of course, keep going, keep just going and stay patient. This is my last device. Last advice I want to give you here today at the end of my class. And if you remember this all the time, that you just have to keep going forward and you have to stay patient and to always want to improve that, let's look for things you still can improve and want to improve, then good things will come as it happened with so many people already. 28.
