1. Welcome To The Course: hi and welcome to the course. I and my wife were very excited to be your instructors and in part to use some classic fund cocktails and some other great general bar and alcohol knowledge. We're gonna be covering everything you need to make a good quality bourbon cocktail to impress your friends and family or to just enjoy by yourself after a long, hard day. One thing we do want to stress, though, is please drink responsibly and always be safe whenever consuming alcohol. But other than that, let's get started. Let's have fun and I'll see in the course.
2. Bourbon Cocktails: we're going to start this course off by looking at your bourbon, specifically the back label here. We're looking for something says distilled by a lot of bottles will say bottled by, crafted by produced by artisan something or other by but not distilled. If it doesn't say distilled, that means they don't make their own bourbon there just bottling bourbon that they purchased from somewhere else or had age somewhere else or something else like it. This is even more so true here on this Henderson bottle, which, if we check the back of the label on it, not only did they not distill their own bourbon, they cut their bourbon that they buy with neutral grain spirits, for example, that would be like a white lightning or never clear. So here you're only getting 20% bourbon, and the rest is all ever clear, which is not really that great of a deal, because you want to get what you're paying for extra indelicate bidders and specifically the two bidders we're gonna be using throughout this course aromatic and orange bitters. These air, your most common bidders for all of your basic cocktails, can be found just about anywhere. Angus store can also be used as a substitute for aromatic bitters. Now we're gonna get into making some drinks, and our very first drink is gonna be a bourbon dandy cocktail. This is a great classic cocktail to start off with. It's really simple to put together. We're gonna be starting this drink off with an ounce and 1/2 of bourbon, followed by 1/2 ounce of triple sec. If you don't have triple sec, any orange liqueur will do, but you're gonna want lean towards something dryer. Next around. Need an ounce and 1/2 of Duvernay and do Today is a Italian, um, Apatow re that's similar to like a removed. So if you don't have any sweet vermouth would be an okay substitute, but not perfect. Follow this up with some aromatic bitters. If you don't have aromatic bitters, Angus store is a 1 to 1 substitute for them. They were gonna go ahead and combine in a well iced shaker, and we're stirring to dilute the drink a little bit. Then we're gonna strain and poured over are awaiting glass, which is on the rocks filled full ice. You have to get that done. Enjoy your bourbon dandy cocktail. Next, we're gonna be making a boulevard e a cocktail, which is one of my personal favorite cocktails and go to cocktails any time. I want a really easy drink where I don't need to think all parts of this drinker equals. We're gonna need one ounce of bourbon, one ounce of Campari and one ounce of sweet for moves. If you don't have Campari, there are some other things that are similar to it, like Grand Classico or look sort of bitter that are very good. But nothing is gonna be quite the same as compartment. Have to get all these into your shaker or gonna shake and make sure that you thoroughly Istria Shaker. Then we're going to pour it into an awaiting glass, which we've garnished here with some brandy Cherries. After the drink settles, enjoy your boulevard e a cocktail. This is the classic cocktail that everyone knows and you've seen in movies and TV. It's the Manhattan. We're gonna need two ounces of bourbon, one ounce of sweet removed, two dashes of aromatic bitters and one dash orange bitters. And we're gonna be serving this in a nick in or glass to give it a high level of elegance. So we're gonna go ahead and get all this in the shaker. And once it's in there, we're gonna combine thoroughly and yet again. Our shaker is ice to go ahead and get that drink nice and cold. After shaking, we're gonna pour into an awaiting glass. Yet again, we're using a Nick and Norah Glass here that we've garnished with some brandy Cherries after straining. Enjoy your Manhattan cocktail. Now we're gonna talk about a much simpler version of the Manhattan, which is just a built in glass Manhattan cocktail. And this is kind of year your daily. I don't want to go to a lot of fuss, but I still want to have a nice drink. The recipe is relatively similar. Two ounces of bourbon, one ounce of sweet removed, but this time we're not going to use the orange bitters, and we're gonna up the aromatic bitters to four dashes of aromatic bitters. And the reason why we're doing that is the ice in the glass is going to dilute the drink. So we're looking for something to have a little bit stronger flavor and bidders air kind of like salt. You know, if they're not there, you know it's missing. So having just a little bit extra pinch of bitters and there is really gonna make the drink hold were to be making a man a war cocktail, which is a rift on a lot of the other drinks we've already made. In this course. It starts off with two ounces of bourbon, one ounce of triple sec, and yet again you can substitute another dry orange like or 1/2 announces sweet removed and 1/2 ounce of fresh lemon juice. And here you actually want to go out and buy and use a limit. Don't use the invitation lemon juice or limited a bottle. The real thing makes a difference. We're gonna combine all of this into a shaker and shake it thoroughly. A quick note. You seen us throughout the course. Stir some drinks and shake some other drinks, and a lot of this really boils down to personal preference. If you want to drink to B'more diluted shaking, it will break up the ice more into the drink, which will cause more dilution and make the drink a little bit softer. A little bit easier drink, but not have as much flavor. Stirring the drink keeps the drink cold but doesn't cause a lot of dilution. So if you're looking for the during to be stronger and just kind of hit you real good, go for stirring over shaking. Anyways, after you shaken the drink, go ahead and strain into an awaiting glass and enjoy your man a war cocktail. The boilermaker. The quintessential dive bar cocktail. This is a great fun cocktail. All you need is beer. Any beer and one ounce suburban. Any bourbon, We're going to start off by pouring the beer into the glass first. Then we're gonna add the bourbon. You can really go with any beer here. The lighter the beer like an American longer. The more you're gonna taste the bourbon, the stronger the beer like a heavy porter on Imperial Stout, the more the Bourbons gonna get lost. So you're just gonna have to decide what fits your palate best. After you get both these guys together, just sit back and enjoy your hard earned boilermaker. Next, we're gonna be making a gold rush cocktail, which is really fun, and we get to start it with a different technique, we're gonna need two ounces of bourbon and 3/4 of announcing honey syrup air made honey syrup. This is that new technique I was talking about. It's really easy. All you need is some hot water and honey. Equal parts mix them together than let them cool. Once they're cooled, you're gonna have a version of simple syrup. Been stepping the wide sugar it's made with honey, so it's just honey, simple syrup. After that, you're gonna need 3/4 of an ounce of fresh lemon juice. Then you're gonna shake these together as hard as you can. Want to get this drink super cold after shaking thoroughly and getting as cold as we can. We want to have a tumbler ready, preferably with a big icefall, and they were going to strain and pour into the glass and enjoy our gold rush cocktail. Now we're gonna be making a union club cocktail, which is a combination of one ounce suburban, a court around some maraschino look, or 1/4 ounce a Campari and 3/4 of an ounce of fresh orange juice. Maraschino liqueur really doesn't have a substitute. I would just recommend buying a bottle. Don't spend tons of money on it and just see if you like it. There's a lot of fun drinks you can make with it, but you're not really gonna be able to replace it with something else and get that same exact on spot flavour. So we're gonna combine all these into a shaker, and we're gonna thoroughly combine them and then pour them into an awaiting glass after you have it strained and glass, enjoy your union club cocktail. The Dumbo Drop cocktail is a fun modern classic which is gonna involve two ounces of bourbon, one ounce of triple sec LaCour and 3 to 5 dashes of aromatic bitters, depending on your personal taste. What we're gonna do is get all of those into an awaiting shaker and then thoroughly combined. After we get them thoroughly combined, we're gonna strain them into our waiting glass. Then we're gonna top the glass off with club soda. It's really important here that you don't have the club soda into the shaker. Whether if you're shaking the drink or stirring the drink, you're just gonna activate the bubbles and they're gonna leave your drink and you're not gonna get the same experience as if you and the club sewed in. After all, the alcohol is already in the glass. So a little bit of a pro tip there. Any time you want that busy, sparkly wonderfulness and drink, always mix all your alcohols together. First pour those into the glass. Then Andrew club soda after you strain. Like I said, go ahead, Andrew. Club soda to top it off and then enjoy your Dumbo drop cocktail. The old fashioned of the quintessential bourbon cocktail and some even say, is if not the original, one of the very first cocktails to ever be made. This drink requires a little bit of doing to be done right. We'll start off with a sugar cube in our glass and two that we're gonna add a a ton of aromatic bitters, 3 to 6 drops. Really? What? We're trying to just get that Sugar Cube went and you know, easier to break down. Now we're gonna smash that with a mother and just get that as relatively fine as we can that we're gonna add in quarter rounds to 1/2 ounce of water. And we're going to start that into the sugar fully dissolves. In a lot of old fashioned recipes, you'll see people adding carbonated water or something else. Just skip that just two regular regular water. Next, we're gonna add a nice fall in, and then we're going to top off with our two ounces of bourbon. After this is done, we just want to give the glass a stir or shake. I prefer to shake it. All kind of depends on your personal preference of the clients that you're using. But after you get everything relatively combined, give it a second to dilute and kind of cool down and hang out together. They enjoy your bourbon old fashioned Thank you for joining us in this course. I'm my wife had a lot of fun showing you the different cocktails in this course and giving you a better understanding of bourbon and bourbon cocktails.
