1. HOW TO FOLD BOOKS - FOR BEGINNERS: Hi there, my name is scheduled Berger and I'm a Danish paper artists. In this course, I will teach you how to fold books into beautiful sculptures like these, just using old books. So it's some, a course for beginners. Anyone can join. All you need is old books, and I'll take you through to making these. Find things that you can use in your home as celebration and for other funny things that I will show you through the course. So let me teach you, and I do look forward to you sharing your project with me so that we can see how you do. Let's get started.
2. WHY IS FOLDING BOOKS GREAT FUN: So folding books is something that has been done for years and years. The reason why I started falling books was because I had a big interior design job where I had to decorate a whole wall full of these kind of covers from the old books. And then I ended up having a lot of these and other, I must do something with them. I don't like throwing them out, so I started folding them. I taught many courses in this, not online. I had that too, but a lot of courses here in my studio in Denmark and in libraries and so forth. So falling, this is very meditative, I've been told. And I feel so too, because it's just basically these are the easy one. So these are folding all the pages the same way. And it is nice for the brain just to relax and let the hands do all the work. The materials that you need is, as I mentioned earlier, an old book. And I have a whole bunch of them here. And there are two different ways, or to extraordinary example now of the books that are good to make or use and the ones that are not good to use. Now these books, as you can see, are these are glued, which are the best ones to fold. These ones are tied with string, which are not so good. Custdata actually fall apart. And as mentioned, I do have a passion for upcycling sustainable interiors and doing something with something that should have been thrown out anyway every year, tons and tons and tons of books or being burnt on. Obviously because nobody's reading them anymore and they're very old. And that's fair enough. They have to go on and live another life, you can say. But I do like to reuse them. And this is one of the things that I one of the reasons why I've done this. And I would also just like to say to you, I always keep the covers because the covers and all these old books are actually quite pretty. And you can use them for other creative projects. Projects, making notebooks, et cetera, et cetera. So I always keep a pile of those. Stepped away here in my studio.
3. HOW TO USE FOLDED BOOKS: So what can you use old folded books for? You might think? To ask yourself, you can use them for many things. This one, which is the most simple one that I've shown you, is easy to hang up. You just put a string through it and beat in the bottom and you can hang it up like this. You can also use it. Lying down. Show you here and put a photograph in it. For business cards or anything that will look good like that.
4. HOW TO FOLD BOOKS: Now I'll show you the first and the easiest one of the folding techniques. It will create this shape. Like so. Or if you only use half a book quantities, what you do is you take your book and you pull that one off. Sorry about the noise. But the cover side, usually you have to remove the first couple of pages because they are glued on in a different way than the others. So just taken that off. And here you can see this book is actually not very good for folding as it has been bound together by threats. So we'll just take another one. And that one's perfect. That's been glued. There we go. Let's take the pages off and I'll just put this aside so I can show you. It really is ever so simple. You might already have spotted how to do it. So you take your book like this and you just start falling. Like so. And you just fold all the pages all the way in here. So it goes all the way and press it down and go like this. And that is basically it. You just keep going, going, going to the same thing to all the pages. And you can see already now we've got one for the ten or so and we're already getting a shape. Now if I'm to do the whole book, it'll end up like this. And if I only do half the book or smaller book, it lands up like this. Some people also like to keep the cover on the book and folded like this. So it lies here. Some people couldn't dried flowers on it and so forth. You can also hear, use the photos. So very handy. And this one can be used for hanging up. If you find the middle, the entrance to the back of the book courses in here, you will get yourself a glue gun, go all the way through, put a string in with maybe a bead in the bottom and then you can hang it up. So it's very nice. That was the, the first and the easiest one of the folding techniques. The second technique I will show you is also quite easy. It is creating this cone shape, which is quite beautiful. The bigger the book, The bigger the comb. All this is, is one fold like the other one, but this one is just like so. So I will show you, I'd say take off the first couple of layers and then I take the book and I simply just start folding. And here's, well, put the side all the way in. And here we are. We're already, what is this? Five or six pages. So it all starts folding out. Some people ask me, how do I make it go round? And it's basically just a matter of keep folding the paper and it will just continue to go around. You could use this for putting a, putting a feather in it. If you like. You can also use that under the other one here. Could be a flower or whichever. There we are, but that is number two. And easy-peasy. Enjoy. Now, the third one I will show you the third folding techniques for the book is this little one here. I've also done a lot of workshops for children, and this could actually be very well decorated as a little mouse or a hedgehog way put a mouth and a tail on it and so forth. This one is a small book, so it's only like half. Whereas if you'd folded it, bigger book, you would have this going all the way around like this one. But let me show you how it's done is, again, quite easy and incorporating some of the folds that was in option 12. So here we go. We start by folding this one like we did on the first one. And then you take the sides in and do like this. There we go. Just folded like this. And we'll do it again. Folded in, folded like this. Some people also use a knife for a sharp object or something to hold down. It could be a credit card even to make decreases even sharper. I don't do that, but that can be an option if you'd like to make it a more crisp edge. So here I have folded. This one obviously takes longer because there's three folds in each page. But here we already started. And they also get thicker because there's more paper. So that is the third option to make something that looks like this.
5. TIPS & TRICKS: To give you a little tip, if you are folding something and it's actually getting too thick, there's too many pages in the book. Then you can just tear them off. And it's basically just pulling it. Another thing is if there are too many pages, you just take a few books. And that makes that there's more room for your fingers to get all the way in here when you need to call the pages. So that was just a little tip for you.
6. THE CLASS PROJECT: Now we're done. I've showed you three ways to fold books in a super easy way. We've got this one, this one, and this one. Now, the project for this class is to create just one of these and show us how you have used it in your home. Have you hungered up? Have you used it for photographs or with flowers or whatever. So so that's basically it. Just fold one of them, the ones that you want that you think could be the nicest are the easiest or whatever. And show us the result and then I will comment on it in the class. Sheeps. I would love to thank you for being a part of this class. And I hope poeple, really, that you'll enjoy it.
7. THE RESULTS AND STYLING: So now I've finished all the books and they are sitting here in my studio. I've just put this together to show you how I would style them if I was to make use of them in my home. Use the feather in this one. I have the photograph in that one. And they are accompanied by a bouquet of dried flowers. So the sculptures really show up, I think, quite nicely in this way. So yeah. Just wanted to give you a close-up of the books. And this one was number one, the cylinder shaped, which is so beautiful. Half a book of the cylinder, which is like this. And here it is where you put, but we still have to cover on it. So don't take that off first and use it for magazines or business cards or whatever, not magazine's photograph, sorry. And then we have this launched. Cuda. Yummy. And the last one, which have the three folds. So the most difficult one. There we are. Okay.
