1. How To Draw Sailboats Intro: Hello everybody. I hope you've been filling in your sketchbook. Welcome back to another drawing class. In this class, we're going to learn how to draw sailing ships. We're going to start out with a basic sailboat and work our way up to a big sailing ship or a pirate ship. We will also try out some other styles as well. So I hope by the end of this class you'll be able to draw a sailboat or sailing ship. John, I like to draw anything from detailed outdoor scenes to fund castle joins with those little nights up on the walls. You can find more on my joins in my other Skillshare classes, as well as at Pembroke studios. So let's go through some things you will need for this. You'll need a pencil and an eraser. We will fill it in with a fine line pen. There's just a simple, fine liner. And you can use many different sizes. A lot of people like to use a smaller size to get more detailed. We will also use a straight line or ruler, and this will help us get straight lines when we're just starting now with our sailboat. Now of course, you'll need something to draw on. So grab a piece of paper or sketchbook. I like this big sketchbook here for when I'm not on the go. If you are on the go, you can grab a smaller sketchbook. Sketchbooks come in lots of different scientists. So be sure to just try a few and see which one you like. You'll also need a sturdy drawing surface such as a table or desk. If your sketchbook has hardcovers or if you find one hardcovers, you can also do this on your lap as well. So let's get into the basics of today's drawing. 2. Simple Ships: All right, Basically for starting out, you're going to have a triangle. For the sale. You'll have a main mashed in your sailboat and then you'll have the boat itself down here. Your sale won't go all the way down to the boat. There'll be a little space there. And then your sailboat will just be right down here. We're going to go on from here, adding more and more detail as we go along. So let's start with the base here. We're going to draw some water. And that's just little curves like this. And then coming up from the water, we're going to draw the boat about the same height on either side. And then we will use our straight line to make the top of the boat here. And then about in the middle of the ship, we would draw. This is going to be the main mast of the ship. And then of course, our triangle, which is going to come down to the edges of the boat down here with a little space above the boat. And then from those points there, we will just go to the top of the mast. And then to add a little more detail where you can add a line across there. Then if you wanted to, you could add in some clouds. And that is the basics of drawing a sailboat. And then of course, just come back with your pen and fill it in. And then once you have it filled in, you will erase the pencil lines. So here we have the basics of a sailboat. So let's work our way up from here, adding more details. We'll draw some bigger waves. This is called the hole. Down here we will have some more lines that follow that curve. And these are the planks on the side of the boat. And these will disappear down into the waves. Next we have the mast. Again that comes up out of the middle of the boat, will add two lines. And then here on the mast, we will draw a sale that looks like this. And it will go out here to the front with these curved lines. And then curving up like this on the front. And then we'll do the same on the back. Let's say a little bit smaller sale. And it will curve like that as well. We want to, you can add a little flag up here at the top of your sale. A little curve like that. And then you can add some detail on your sale. So let's go ahead and fill this when it, now it may help to move your sketchbook, depending on if you're right or left-handed, to be able to get the curves better. I'm going to finish these waves in so I can put the wood planks behind them. Let's go ahead and add in the main mast behind there. And then we'll add our flag up here on top. These are great for starting out with if you're new to drawing or if you're just learning how to draw a sailboat. These are great examples to try. So let's work our way up from here, and we'll get a little more detailed. 3. Simple Ship Line Art: All right, so let's do a fun little line drawing here. This is a simple little design and it will show contrast and a few different features. We'll put a little sailboat here over by the edge. Make a curved bottom. And then we're going to fill this in. So I like to thicken up the edges and then I'll work my way in from there. All right, next we'll add a mask. So I'm gonna give myself a reference point there and another one up here at the top. And I'm going to add a sale next to that. Kind of go up to here and then down to here. And I'm gonna go straight across down here at the bottom. Again, the sale will be filled in Shang going to thicken the edges of it. Then up here at the top of the mast, I am going to add a little flag. Alright, then to add some fun little details, I'm going to add some little birds over here, some seagulls flying out over the water. And then we'll add a little bit of a cloud over here. You can find out how to draw more clouds in my class on how to draw simple objects can be on different sizes and shapes of clouds. So there we have a cloud. Then we'll just add some lines over here that show that the wind is blowing. And there we have a fun little liner doodle so you can mix it up and make lots of little designs this way. Just adding different little features in it. 4. Sailboat Line Drawing: Let's make another simple sailing ship. Make another one here on some calmer water. So we have our boat here in the middle. And we have the whole of the boat going up. They're off into the distance. Well, I'll leave a little line here in the middle that is white. And then we'll fill in everything else. We'll have our sale coming out here. Then we'll have some little lying holders out here. These are going to hold the support lines on the sale. And then here underneath the boat, I would just add its reflection in the water. No, we just have the mast reflection. And then we can add some other water detail out here. And that will kind of blend the whole thing together, right? Like that. So that was a fun line drawing. 5. Sailboat Line Drawing 2: All right, Let's make another simple line drawing here. This one is just going to be a simple outline of a sailboat. So we'll have some waves coming in. And then we'll add our sailboat here in the middle. And what is, add a little detail there. A moon or sun off in the distance. And then just add a little more to these waves. So here you can see a very simple sailboat line drawing. Doesn't have to be fancy and you don't have to complete all the lines to get the shape. You can see the basic shape just like that. 6. Sketching a Pirate Ship: So let's go on to some pirate ships. All right, let's start out with the basic shape of a pirate ship via large sailing vessel. We're going to draw the basic shape here and then we'll add more details to it later on. So we're going to go step-by-step first, we're going to draw the ship itself and then work our way up from there. So our basic design here is going to be much like this. Then we will add a cabin or the captain's quarters, but here in the back. So I'm just going to up here two times, kind of like a staircase. And then one more time here in the back. And then this here is going to extend back here a little bit and step up again until I go up to this level here. And then I will connect that. And we can just erase this line here that we made on our main ship. And that is our basic design there. Next we will have the masts. There is one large one here in the middle. We have one up here in the front, is a little bit shorter. And then we'll have one back here. So our main mast is the largest one. The one in the front is about the same height as the one in the back next to you can add flags to the top of those masts. So we will have a pirate flag here. You can add a smaller flag up here, simple banner flag. And we can put a little one back here on the back. Next we will add the sales. So I have a little triangle shape here. And then our sales are going to be blowing in the wind. So a curved line and underneath will be curved as well. And then we're going to draw another one underneath this, a little bit larger one. And it will curve here on this side as well. Then we'll draw the sales in the middle. I'll get our lines here just for reference of where our sales are. So we'll draw another curved tail here. And they're going to connect to the one underneath. And then curve up here and down here as well. Much like we did on the front. And our sales here on the back, much the same way we did on the front and the middle. There we have the basic shape of our pirate ship. And we just need one more thing out here in the front, the front of our ship here. So now we can add some more details on the ship. We will add a line here with some openings. Also have some down here on the bottom line here across the middle. And this band here, we will add in all the canon holes. Here. We will add in all the canon holes. So we'll add quite a few of them. There. We have an even number. So now we can fill this in. 7. Filling in the Pirate Ship: All right, so grab your pen and let's fill this in. And we'll just trace over our lines. These windows here we were going to dark and n can go ahead and fill those in. And I'm going to finish in the main part of our ship and finish off the ship of fires start on the top. Art canon holes down here and will also be filled in. And then we'll work on our sales and then fill in our masts behind the sales. I'm gonna go ahead and fill in this pirate flag. So once you have your sales finished, and you can add in the math behind it, that way you don't draw over your sales. Makes sure everything in the foreground is drawn in the foreground. All right, lastly, we can erase all our pencil lines and we should have a nice pirate ship here. All right, There we go. 8. Sketching an Old Vessel: All right, Let's draw another one like that here. This one will be a little bit different. So we'll start with our water. So we have that front part of the ship here. And then the back of our ship will probably go up to about here. And then we have those little step-ups here and there. And then the back of the ship back here. And this is just going to curve down here to the bottom. Like that. Now again, we'll just have three masts. 12, a big one here and the metal. All little one up here. And another one here in the front. And then we'll draw the sales. So just for some reference lines, you can add these in like this. And this will show us where the top of the sales are. This one here on the back is kinda be a little different. It's going to be a triangle sail. So we have that there. And then we can fill in our sales up here, change the direction of the line and got it backwards. So all our sales are going to be billowing out the front here. And then we'll have our flag up here. I didn't have the wooden panels on our shape here. And then we can add some windows in here and the back. All right, so we're going to add those are going to add those boards down the side of the ship. So just kinda keep them even on your way down the ship here. And then we need to draw in the bottom of our sales. 9. Filling in the Old Vessel: And then we'll just fill it in. So I'm going to start down here with the waves and then start on my boat working from the bottom up. Then from there we can go up to the sales. So our main mast is going to be larger than the other two. All right, there we have another sailing vessel, a race our pencil lines and finish this up. All right, so there we have two more sailing vessels. 10. Sketching a Sailboat Line Drawing: Let's make another one here in a storm. Another fun little line drawing ship. Have some crashing waves here. Our waves here in the foreground. And then we'll make our ship back here making its way through the waves. So we're going to have our mast coming here. And we're going to have another one here. This is a little more 3D drawing. All three of them here in a row. So we're going to have three different sets of sales up there. Another set here. And then our enlarge one down here at the bottom. There'll be pretty similar to each other. And we can just fill them in here. And this one back here, we'll leave it curled up. Make all these similar to each other. There we have our ship breaking through the waves here. We can add some more fun little detail here on the sides. Like clouds blowing up on the horizon. This is another fun little line drawing a son detail or moon rising back here behind the ship. 11. Filling in a Sailboat Line Drawing 2: So we'll fill this in with our pen. So I'm going to start filling in from the front, kinda fill in the sales. And then I will start working on the ship. Then I'm going to finish out the mass here and a little flag detail upon top. And we'll just finish the rest of the sales here. And just work our way through the whole drawing. All right, I'm going to work on the wave details next. These are very simple waves here at the bottom. And up here next to the boat we have some crashing waves with a little more detail on them. Then finally, I'm just going to add in the clouds up here on either side. And up here I'm going to add the sun or the moon. And felt that in. And there we go. We have our finished line drawing. Recently, our pencil lines. There we have a fun little line drawing. 12. More Examples: All right, We've finished up making some sailboats. We have gone from a simple design up to some fun little line drawings, to more detailed and up to larger ships as well. Here are a few more examples of simple sailboats. This one here has some simple waves here at the bottom. Just a very simple boat. And then we have this familiar looking sail up here on the front. Plus we added this little detail here is a very common detail to add on sales. And then we have this extra sail back here in the back for extra wind power. Let's go on to make some line-drawing ones that are simple and minimalistic. All right, so let's make another simple ship drawing here. Let's do this one very contrasted. So we'll make our ship here. And I'm going to fill this in so it's completely black and we'll add up our sales here. Now I'm just going to fill these sales n. And then I'm going to fill the boat. So this will be a very contrast did line drawing. So you want to have a good pen for this. All right, down here below the ship, I'm going to add a reflection of the boat in the waves. So this would be like a shadow. If it was in the moonlight or the sunlight. This would be like the shadow on the waves. Just kinda add a few of these down here and they're going to get smaller, like it's larger here. And then it's getting smaller up here at the top. So I'm going to make these mirror that down here. And I'm going to fill them all in as well because that matches our contrasting picture. And then we can just connect some of them together if you want to. Or you can leave them unconnected. This way it kinda ties the whole drawing together. So there we have a nice contrasted line drawing. And you can go back if there's any light spots. Once your ink has dried. You can see if there's any light spots to go fill in. And there you have a nice illustration. If you're just getting started withdrawing sailboats, this is the most basic one you can draw. So a very basic shape with triangles. And then you have a half circle or half oval. And down here at the bottom, a very basic shape. Let's make another one down here. We'll start with our waves. And then I'm going to make a very simple shape here. And then the mashed up here, a little triangle flag. And then we'll add our sale right here. And there we have a very simple sailboat. So as you can see, it has a lot of fun. There's a lot of different ways you can make these sailboats. And you have simple line drawings, contrasting line drawings like we did here. We also have very basic and then we have minimalistic ones. And then we have our pirate vessels. And you can add in more waves and clouds for more detail later on. 13. Minimalistic and Simple Ships: Let's make a minimalistic design here of a sailboat. We're going to start with a curvy, wavy line and make the little boat down here at the bottom. It's going to be leaning over quite a bit. We'll make the tall mast up here. And I'm going to fill the mass ten. And then just a simple sale right there. And we can have a little flag going up here. As a very simple, minimalistic design of a sailboat. Another type is just to sketch it out. And this is a great way to get started as well. With a simple boat design. A little bit of a wave down here. Make care mast was a sale. So this is a more of a sketch, drawing of a ceremony where you would just sketch it in pretty loosely and you'd get the basic shape down. But you'd also have some extra lines as opposed to a line drawing where it is much more refined and you have more control over your details. Let's do another basic one here. Susan, nice, easy one anyone can do. There's draw shipping here. This will be a little sailboat like you would make out of a piece of paper. And then you can make the sun there and then just add some sun rays off of that. And that is a very simple line drawing. You can see all of these are pretty basic and pretty easy to do. So just practice drawing different sailboats in different ways. 14. Class Project: All right, that's about it for this class. Thanks for watching. I hope this helps you get started drawing sailboats in many different ways. Also different types of sailboats you can draw and contrasted and I'm drawing and sketching them out. So be sure to go back through, pick your favorite sailboat that you liked and make your own for the class project. Upload a picture so I'd love to see what you guys draw. If you like this class, be sure to go check out my other classes. I have more on mountains and cabins, and pine trees and simple objects. You can draw a whole bunch more classes on line drawing if you're interested. Sure to go check those out. Thanks for watching this class. I love to see what you guys create in the project, and I'll see you guys in my next tutorial.
