About This Class

Welcome to the captivating world of watercolors! In this class, I invite you to dive into the mesmerizing art of creating a couple of white swans using a variety of techniques. Whether you're a seasoned artist or just starting your creative journey, this class will inspire and empower you to explore the beauty of watercolor painting.

You'll embark on a journey in which I will teach you the intricacies of working with watercolors to capture the essence of the white feathers of the swans and its breathtaking surroundings. Throughout the course, you will focus on two essential techniques: wet-on-wet, and wet-on-dry, all of which are fundamental to mastering the art of watercolor painting.

The course begins with a detailed explanation of how we create the composition and how to draw these beautiful swans.

Next, you'll delve into the wet-on-wet technique, which allows you to achieve beautiful, ethereal blends and soft transitions in your watercolor paintings. Through step-by-step instructions and hands-on practice, you'll learn how to control the flow of water and pigments on your paper, creating warm highlights and cool shadows.

Building upon the wet-on-wet technique, you'll then explore the wet-on-dry approach, which offers more control and precision in capturing intricate details, specially on the swans feathers. You'll discover how to layer washes, create textures, and incorporate fine brushwork to bring depth and realism to your artwork.

By the end of this class, you'll proceed with wet-on-wet technique to create the turquoise background and to create the blured effect of it. 1. Introduction to how to paint swans: Hi friends. I welcome you in a new skill share class where I will be sharing with you how to draw and paint beautiful swan scenes. For those of you who are for the first time here, my name is Ala. I'm a sketch illustrator and watercolorist from 2020. I'm an art teacher too. In today's class, I will be sharing how to draw and paint these beautiful swans. I will start with sharing which supplies you will need for this class, and then we will proceed with the drawing itself. On the drawing, I will share with you the basics of creating the composition and as well how to go from bigger objects to smaller ones to recreate the swans or any object that you wish. Once the drawing will be done, we will proceed working with the swans in water colors. Because the swans are white, I will share with you how we mix up colors correctly to represent the colors on the swans. As far as units, we have warm colors and we have cool colors on the swans. I will be sharing with you how to apply these colors in such a way that the transition is smooth and it is beautiful. Once the swans will be painted in colors, I will share with you how to paint the background. The background. As far as you see, it is a little bit light, but at the same time it is darker than the swans. What makes that the swans to be brought to the viewer eye and to stay in front of us for the background, we will work with the wet on wet technique. I will share with you how to apply the light color and the darker colors on the background. That's it. With this, we will finish the work. Let's jump in. 2. Which supplies you will need for the class: Hi friends. I invite you to draw and paint these beautiful swans that we have in this reference. For this class, we'll need a piece of watercolor paper. You can use any paper that you have. We will work with wet on dry. We will work with different class for this work, and it can be thinner than 300 S. Then for the drawing, I will use my HB pencil. I will use my net eraser. For watercolors, I will use my 36 pens of white nights. For the paint brush, I will use Op Grip, the base color for the details. I will use number four or five synthetics. This doesn't have any brand on it, obviously. We will need some water tissues and the hair rep. Let's jump in with the jawing. 3. How to draw swans in pencil: If in landscapes we don't pay attention too much to the details on how we will create the composition, then yes, we will do we have the swans here. Beautiful swans. And we will try to create as many details as possible because later on it will make us easier to work. In watercolors, the composition is that the swans are on this side, and I will replicate those two. Let's see how much space those will take, more or less. The height of it is one third. I will take another pencil, a little bit longer. 130, more or less like this. Both will be here. Here it is, part of the second. The first one is somewhere here. Here we need it is more or it's a little small to somewhere here. The first curve of the swan is seen here of the neck. If we take into account the head of the first, somewhere here and of the second swan is somewhere here. The body is like this. Let's see how much it will take the body to in the half to. Let's see how much space it will have. Here it is one from the paper. Okay, It will take one in the half. The other one starts here. If you want, you can obviously make it bigger. I will recreate here the composition of the top and we will have some blurred effect too later on. The poll of that we have here is always will raise these unnecessary lines. Because those are not guiding a recreating the mistake. Make sure that it looks very light here and we don't see the other. Let's see how much space is taking it here. 123 and almost 423, almost 21. And we will get here, we will have this side between the head and the neck. And now it is just easier to connect with this part. So my first sworn is almost treating, then let's try to make it here. This is the black side, the eye. That's true. It looks like we have here space. But actually it is the reflection that we see having the reference, the first one. It is easier to draw the second one even if we don't see it. We have to understand that we have the continuity of these parts correctly drawn. My work is done. I will erase everything, and we'll try to draw it with a thinner line. Because we will work with the water colors. I need that the lines are not as visible. The drawing is done. And if you have noticed, I have drawn here as well, because we haven't drawn this side. 4. Working with warm and cool colors to represent white swans: Now about water colors. When we were painting snow. I already told you that we don't have white color. We always have a reflection. The same happens with swans. If you pay attention to the swans, you can see that in the reflections, we have warm colors. In the highlights, we will leave it in white. In the shadow, we have a cool color. What does it mean that we will prepare the white color that we apply in the reflections? We will create the warm color. We will add more color that is a warm color for the shadows that we have here, we will add more blue color. How we prepare the white color, we take some color, we take some ultramarine color, we take a little bit of ruby color. We take very few, and we have this grayish color. Now it is okay for me because it is warm color. And I will apply its straight of here, but I will leave white spaces where we have the highlight. I apply with really light color because I will work with glazes and I don't know how much the intensity I need, Even if I have here white, I will apply with this color to where it is, more occlor. I will add more occ here. I have a huge reflection, a huge highlight. To have this transition, I will try to have this transition from color to color. Color. I add a little bit more of all timer in color and I had it tissue. I pay attention. We have the reflection. It would be better that we have a down those but even though it's not a problem, the same we will do with this. Let's prepare again or color a little bit of ruby color. Oltrimine, Too much ltrimmerine. Little bit of more ocher color, and a little bit of rubic color, and more water. I have a reflection here. We need to remove this edge, add some ultra marine and make it cooler. Here on this side, the first layer is done. Let's try the work. After trying the work, I will proceed to read another layer, but this time I take a I will start to work with the details. I think that this site is pretty dark color, but I will intensify it only here. First, let me remove these pages that we have here. I see that I haven't painted this shadow now. Meanwhile, it is drying here. I will go with some rosana. It is a little bit warmer. It is stronger in cover. I wanted to say we have here, can we have more Ok cover here with a tissue. We remove the edges. We have also some blue color on this side. It is interesting how warm color turns into a cool color. Water will work a lot as we don't want to create the unnecessary edges. We just want to intensify the details. The oh, show here here. 5. How to paint feathers on the swans: Pay attention. What I will do? I will take my pin brush. I didn't mention earlier, but if you wish, you can take any pin brush. I will wet slightly the color that I have painted. Very important that we don't wet it too much. Just a and now look what I will do with almost no water on color. I will do with very thin lines. The small feathers that we have, you don't paint to me. I will enter wells. I waited too much on this side and I will come back a little bit later, once or twice a while. You can even it with your smaller, if you wish, at the small details to recreate the theaters. I will take it in N singing that. Let's try to work and let's work on other kits. I will take some golden color. From this golden color, we will turn into red. I will take carmine. On the ton red technique, I add this red color. I'm not waiting till the paper joins. I need that the colors to start to run and create this beautiful transition that it is so much needed. Do you remember that we have here a very light highlight that we will leave it in white. While it just steal it. I'll take a gun. I will remove and drying the work with a black color or plains gray will take natural black. I will proceed with, yes, you live somewhat space. Here we have some black color attention to it, removing the excess of water monta, leaving a white dot. And let's spend some bay ground now. 6. How to paint a blured background: Initially I didn't want to paint the background, I just wanted to paint the swans. But now I decided to have some negative painting because in this way, the white spaces that the white highlights that will act, we will even prettier for this. We will need a flat pain brush to wet the paper. Really important that we are weighting the paper properly, but we are not getting into the swans as the negative painting is not affecting our beautiful work. See if it happens that, let me just work on the other side with the water because if not the paper will get wavy now it will get as we need. I will take some turquoise blue Sc for the background. These details is important that we don't get inside of the swans with a lot of care. We cover the background, so we'll take it to a and with indigo will recreate the beautiful trees that we have. I can even take some seed. Yeah, that's it. The work is done. I really like the result and I think that it was a great decision that I painted the background on the last meal because in this case, it just helped us to get another opportunity to this one and to catch up the viewer's eye till the next time. 7.
