About This Class

During this class you will learn how to draw and paint clown fishes in watercolours. Here you will learn some drawing skills, how to apply fluid mask, how to apply wet-on-wet wash and then how to paint jellyfish in detail.

On this class you will learn:

- how to draw the clown fishes in pencil - this step is important as it will guide you throughout the whole process from applying fluid mask, till painting water and then the clown fishes

- how to apply the masking fluid, and why we use it in our works - Reserving fluid is a kind of rubber glue that can be used to cover individual parts of the paper. This layer will keep the surface free of paint, even if you paint with a lot of water. Masking fluid can be used when you need a clear boundary between the background and elements on it, or when you need to place small light details on a dark or colored background.

Since the masking fluid resembles a rubber glue in its texture, it sticks together the pile. I advise you to moisten the brush before starting work and run it several times over the bar of soap so that it forms a protective layer. After that, you can safely get to work! Remember to rinse your brush with warm water immediately after use. Another important point! Make sure your masking fluid is completely dry before you paint over watercolors. However, it is necessary to remove its layer only after the watercolor is completely dry.

- how to apply the first washes with wet-on-wet technique The “wet” technique, as a rule, involves working in one session, and if you work for several days, then each time you need to wet the sheet again. Glazing allows you to continue painting with watercolors without preparatory work.

- how to work on details with wet-on-dry technique to catch up the viewer eyes - Glazing allows you to make the colors deeper, as the watercolor lightens by several tones when it dries. It is important to remember that a new layer of paint should be applied only after the previous one has completely dried. Glazing makes the image more realistic due to the ability to work out the nuances of lighting and volume transfer.

By the end you will have a beautiful seascape. Please, share it with me and the community.

1. Introduction to clown fish in watercolors: Have you ever wondered how to draw and paint a clown fish? If so, then this class is for you. I'm Alla, I'm a Sketch Illustrator into water colorist. And on today's class, I will show you how to draw and paint the clown fish. The fish is and easy to paint, but in this specific class it is interesting to paint the background because it has a lot of details and it contains the sea life, this submarine life. On this class, I will show you the supplies that you will need to initiate, and then you will proceed with the drawing itself. Once the drawing will be done, We will work not only with the clone fishes, but also you will have to show all the details that we see in the background. That's in this way, it will help you later on the work. Once the drawing is done, we will proceed to work with the fluid, mask, the reserving fluid. It works perfectly when you want to create some background in one color. And you don't want to cover some details with colors. You just want to say that this surface to stay white in case you don't have the reserving for you. Don't worry, just pay attention when working on the background that you are not covering the space where the clownfish is good chunk. Then once the fluid mask is tried and you are ready to start to work with watercolors. We will start to work with the background. The background will be done in a very interesting and one of the most used techniques, wet on wet technique. Maybe if you are a beginner, you are not used to use this technique. But if you are already an artist and you have tried, at least sometimes, you've probably know that wet and wet technique helps us to create a beautiful and smooth background. That the color is not having different tones. And that's the color stays in. One wash. From one side to another. One background will be done. I will proceed with the wet on dry technique. Or we want it is also known we apply different washes till we get the intensity of the color that we need. Specifically, we will work with details on the background and then on the coefficient itself. For the coefficients, you will need a smaller pin brush because the fishers will be smaller and you will need just adjust some specific details on those. And that's it. I hope you will enjoy this class if you will like it. Please leave a comment below. I will really be grateful to you. So let's get started. 2. Supplies Clown Fishes: For the class, clown fishes in watercolors. We will need these supplies. I will use an HB or B pencil. You have to look what you have. And I will use a kneadable eraser for the drawing itself. I will use the kneadable eraser because kneadable eraser help us not to damage the paper. And that till later when we apply the watercolors, it is not leaving unpleasant touches on the paper. Then I will use fluid mask to apply it only on clownfish is because in this way when we will paint the background, the clown fishes want to get the image and we will see that the coefficients will stay white after we will apply these fleet. How we apply the fluid mask, you have to look if you have any paintbrush that you are not using. And you have to know. So bit here and there. Where is the hero of the paintbrush? Then only use the fluid mask. If you want to use the soap, then you can easily damaged here of the paintbrush and you cannot use it any late. After you apply the fluid mask on the paper, you can clean these paintbrush really quick. And then you will need a washi tape and watercolor paper. Watercolor paper, I use 200 GSM, but it contains 30% cotton. If you have any higher density paper like 300 GSM, 500 GSM, or 600 GSM. It is even better. It is up to you which one to use. Just talk to. The people also contains keratin in it. Because in this way, the wet-on-wet technique in watercolor is, will be easier for you. Then I will use my palette of 36 bands of White Nights, watercolors. If you have any belief that this smaller, don't worry, we are using very few colors of blue. So just look what you have and adjusted on on your plate. And then which been brushes, we will use the first paintbrush. We will use a flat brush with this one that we will apply the plane of water to wet the paper first and then we will work on the background. On the background, I will use it bigger round paintbrush. Look what you have. Then for the details, I will use a smaller paintbrush as well. Look what obviously we will need some plain water, we will need some tissues and we will need a hairdryer to dry the layers. If you don't have hairdryer, just you will have a will need some more time to dry layer by layer. So that's it. Let's get started. 3. Drawing the clown fish: In this video, we will work on cloned fish. I have chosen blue sea animals as a colorful backdrop that contrasts nicely with the yellow and orange colors of the clown fish. I think fish is an easy task to do. That is why it is said that it will be a great way to paint something new on this work. So let's intro. I will draw too. Finishes. I will incorporate to fish in my design. Can you have a reference over here? So if you want to take reference to you, if you think that you want to go with niche, then I think as well it is great to them. As I mentioned on the previous works, on the previous projects, it is very important to draw from the beginning very clearly the details of the works that we're doing. Because lately it is easier to paint too. Good project. If it is, draw the previously very well, make it half of the job. It will be easier too painted, even going too fast for you. Then just make sure that you can stop whenever you need. And go ahead. Lately. I tried to draw really thick lines because I want you to see the work, but I advise you to go with softer lines because lately It will be really difficult for you to remove the lines. Okay. Here I will need to know. I will have the washi tape to hear whether it's Wallace. And just repeating the same fish. We're done. See all of the fish over here. Now I remove the lines, thicker lines, and we'll make some softer lines and find the ones. I hope you really see the work. Two, as you can see, by only final touches over here. And let's draw some of the background. Let's imagine that these fishes are swimming near the sea. Animals and humans detect tentacles. I also tried not to mention that I will have washi tape over here. So just trying to make this pretty interesting work. Just looking for an interesting lines, not drawing all together. Look for interesting movements, interesting sides. Angles. Be creative. I'm drawing some are longer tentacles, and then will be easier to draw the smaller ones. Okay, so we're done with the drawing. Now it's time to make sure to cover the entire fishes. And then we will start with painting itself. On the next level, we will work with Floyd mask. 4. Fluid mask application: As I mentioned, now, I will apply masking fluid. Masking fluid. And as mentioned on the previous classes, but I will repeat it previously, we start to apply the masking fluid. We prepare our paintbrush. Paintbrush. We have to add some soap on it. And only then to apply fluid mask because if we are not proceeding these few moments, Lux soap applying on the paintbrush, paintbrush will get damaged really fast. Even though if you are not washing faster after you apply fluid masks, then the Being brush as well will be damaged. It will last less than using. So that is why I advise you to take some time and to take care of you being brushes. If you want. You can apply fluid mask or the fishes. But I will apply only on the edges because I don't want to get inside. I will take care not to paint over those fishes and to spend less time in fluid masking. I'm applying only the fleet most contagious. As you can see. With mask is drank really fast. My first fishes down, now my second cloned fish. And we are ready to go. We are ready to go. Let's move with painting. Prepare your paint brushes and your water, and your watercolors to take care of you. The brain brush or should know. 5. First watercolor wash for the background of Clown Fish: The first step when we start to paint a wet all the paper on the surface. And I will work wet on wet. Depending on the water you use. It can be that the paper is getting way, we don't worry about it. It can happen. And as you can see, because I have applied thicker lines of the pencil, some of the lines are getting that we've taught it to me. See, here, we're waiting while the paper. Now, I will apply several blues. I'm applying cobalt blue and blue. And does a node have to take into consideration that when applying wet on wet, even if the color is looks very bold, look really bold. And even though you have to apply more color, because when it will dry, it will get darker, it will get lighter. And playing bright blue. Why I'm using wet on wet technique is because I want to end ultramarine color. I want these blues to get one into another. And we don't see that after we finished sheets that the transition to be really smooth one with another color. Because if not working on wet-on-wet technique, then the colors will not be so beautiful. We will see edges. So we would see the clear mixing of the colors. And the idea that we have a very beautiful transition from one color to another. In the thin blue because it is darker and they wouldn't just do darkness over here. Just so we can dry it. We can leave it to dry or dry with a hairdryer. I will apply here. 6. Painting background details in watercolor, first wash: Now I will start with tentacles and I will work from the edges till the middle part. And really carefully moving around the scene. How I will do this, I'm working with bright blue color, painting tentacles over here. And it is important to leave the trope. Okay. Why are we the job? Lately? You will see how I'm applying another color. And that these edges to turn out beautiful, curious, well, leaving drop or four. Very important to go with tentacles. Carefully. Chose not to mix one into another. After applying bright blue. We'll apply in the thin blue color that is darker. Now look how pretty the color is mixing mesoglea, the job helps me. This color bleeds wanting to another and make these beautiful transition carefully. To get. If I'm working fast, just take your time and paint all your mood and your time. Don't run with me. You can pause every time you want. This video. The trope. Trying to really fast, don't worry, just move a little bit to hire. Repeat. The moment. You see go help reduce its terms. Now let's move on with other tentacles. And finishing. I will take more color on the palette. And we'll add some water. I will make really watery this color. And go here. This is bright blue, the time playing the most moment. Later we'll apply in the 3a1 blue. Have a look how I apply. I live small drop over here and move around the painting. Easy and training to make these tentacles to close one to another because you don't want the colors to mix. Because lately, when I feel that I can move, I can move more. I will apply I will take my hairdryer to dry the work. Because at the certain point, I will not be able to paint more tentacles. And we'll have to go with hairdryer. This work is easy to do, but it requires patients because the movements are repeated all over again. Okay, Now at the moment that I will apply hairdryer, now after drying my first tentacles, I will use the same colors, will proceed with their tentacles that are over here. Remember, I'm using brighter bone and skin, the thin blue to make these transitions. Let's move on with industry. Dentin. Good morning. Brian. Now, in the room. I don't know how for you, but I really enjoy how the colors turns, turn into very beautiful nature under the water. As you can see here, I already have some dried color and the transition is not so smooth. It now I will show you a trick, how we can still make it. I use plain water and mix those colors. Now I will use the hairdryer to dry my work. Repeating the process for the last time. Because we already have less tentacles to go with and to paint those color. Now, because I still have several spaces, once I got to do is to take indigo color to paint these spaces. And look how beautiful it turns. When applying negative painting. Darker background. I think that is a perfect moment to take over the washi tape and just feel the moment and make these changes that you need to going around. I will live here, lighter, the color. I really mentioned that we see some light from outside and they think it will turn really interesting. Now we will proceed with fishes. 7. Painting in watercolor Clown Fishes and details: You can see I moved the washi tape and the white fleet mask. Now what I will use now, we'll start to wet my little portions might go on fish. And we'll add some colors of oranges and yellows to cover all these white spaces. I changed the water and they removed this orange because I saw that it is a little bit dark because I applied another colors on it and it wasn't clean enough. So now what I do is a blank, different oranges. I use light, medium and dark oranges. Look at the Palais to have the same this first part. You wet the portion and then apply different oranges. On the second portion, I will just go ahead with colors. And this time I will take some yellows. Because I want you to see that we can make this mostly changes not only when applying the wet on wet, but also while applying other colors are the warm colors that we use from the same palette. And we can go and make changes, as you can see now. Beautiful, right? Look how beautiful the color turns one end to another end. We have this difference. I showed you on two different spaces how to use two different techniques. And both techniques are amazing. But first, always, always when you are using different colors, use a lighter color and then only apply darker colors on the way. Because if you are not applying in this way, then it will be more difficult to get what you want. And here for for a darker sides, I'm using sepia just to make sure I have some shadow here. Once again, using Glide to color of orange. And then darker shadows. Light color over here. And darker. On this side. Don't be afraid to play with colors. You could use only oranges. I preferred to use some some yellow colors too. Here we have very dark color. I'm using oranges and sepia. Mixing up. My angle here. Here you can see I apply some darker color first. And then we'll make the transition to lighter color. Now I will show you how to taking some orange color and the red curves. You see. How beautiful it Stearns. Now the same process, I repeat over here. More. Orange color. Darker orange. Here. Over here is going to stink. Different. Don't like something like I don't like how it turns when it dries over here. We just go over again. Don't be afraid of changes. Now I will have dried the work and we'll use neutral black color. The details. You can take even bank black color. I don't have really black girl and I use my neutral black colors. So it is really up to you what you have on your bleed. As you can see a move a lot. This work in terms of that, it can be convenient to myself. You can do it as well. This is just the work. You have to be prepared to move around it and to finish it. The same thing here. Now what I want to do is to add more orange color here. To make some shadowing. Look at your work and look what you need for your work. Because sometimes maybe what I'm doing for you, it's not necessarily to do. Maybe you have other things to work on. And it is a perfect moment just to adjust your work and how you feel about your work. I think my work is done. I hope you did a good job to thank you for watching. 8. Last thoughts Clown fishes: I hope you enjoyed this class with cloned fishes. And two, if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask me to leave a comment or to contact me on any other social media. Thank you for watching until the next time. Bye.
