About This Class

Ever felt frustrated having worked so hard on a drawing – only to find it still looks ‘flat’?The most effective method of taking your drawings appear three dimensional, is understanding how light and shadow works.

If line drawing creates the proportions, handling of tone creates the form. Applying the principles of how tone, light and shade work, will improve the illusion of form in every drawing you do – regardless of the subject.

And the exciting part about it is, once you ‘get’ lighting, the principles never change.

When reflected light is handled well, it can give your drawings that ‘How did you do that?’ response – so it’s worth taking the time with.

When working on three dimensional drawings, the two things I focus on are form and edges. We’ll also create some quick sketches to map shadows and cover drawing techniques on turning a form.

In this course you’ll learn how to draw using dramatic light and shadow.  All form, no matter how complex, follows a basic set of shading principles.  By understanding how light operates on an apple, you’ll be able to realistically shade and render basic forms and be prepared to draw and shade more complex subjects.

1. Introduction : The genre of Still Life is one of the most famous and ancient. In order to draw beautiful drawings, you need to be able to draw the basic ones. Hi, my name is Damini and I'm an artist from Mumbai. I have been teaching painting since 2018 and have taught thousands of students in physical workshops. Now I'm so excited to teach online. In this class, we will learn how to draw an apple with a simple pencil. To do this, all you need is a paper and a pencil. The most effective method of making your drawings appear three dimensional is understanding the light and shadow. If line creates the proportions, handling of tone creates the form. By applying the principles of tone, light, and shade, you will improve the illusion of form in every drawing you do regardless of the subject. Learn how to draw an apple step by step with this class. Discover essential tips and create a sweet apple drawing. This class is fun for all ages. I invite you to join me for the course. Look forward to seeing you inside the class. 2. Sketching : Welcome to the class. In this class, we are going to sketch the apple. So first, using a pencil, we are going to create a C shape, a C shape that is narrower at the bottom. And similarly, on the opposite side, we are going to create the reversed C shape. And then I'll join these two C with a horizontal line. So a curvy line at the base, and similarly a curvy line at the top. And now we will make this stem. We will make two curvy lines from top to bottom to show the stem and then one line at the base, one curvy line at the base. And then making two more lines at the top, horizontal lines. That's again, the stem now making a leaf at the top here. So it's hard shaped and pointed at the base. And then we are going to just make the edges of the leaf. So these edges are kind of sharp and then making a line in the center of the leaf. So while starting, first apply light pencil lines so that you can erase them in case you have made any mistakes or if you want to make any changes to that shape. And then once you're sure that you have made the right shape, then you can darken them. 3. Shading : Now I'm showing you the direction where the shading will come. So we have to make the strokes in this direction. So that's the shape showing the curves of the apple. Now we will start shading, taking the pencil, I'm going to make vertical strokes in the direction or the curve of the apple. And wherever there is a curve, I'm just going to follow along that curve and then make lines small vertical lines following along the upper curve. So that's the backside of the apple, which gets the shadow. So we are making a few small strokes to show that shadow part. And then moving on to the right hand side of the apple, we are going to make, again, vertical lines. So wherever we are making the pencil strokes, it is to show the shadow, the place where the shadow falls. And then just darkening that part a little more and making more lines to show the shadow. Make sure to follow along the curve wherever there is a curve, you will have to apply the stroke in that direction. So here at the top part of the apple, that's where the light falls. So it's not going to be very dark there. In fact, it's going to be light because that's a place where the light is getting reflected. So here I'm making horizontal curves to show the shape of the apple. So in three D, that's how the apple looks. Now we are going to follow along these horizontal and vertical lines which we have created to understand the curve of the apple. So we are going to follow along these lines, horizontal and the vertical lines to make the curve. We have understood now how the curve will come. So here at the top part, there is going to be a little shadow. So we are going to make small strokes. Now the left part of the apple, so we are going to darken it. Moving on to the right part of the apple, I'm going to darken the edges, darken the place where there is most shadow. And I'm making the lines in a curvy way to show the curve of the apple. And then the base part or the bottom part of the apple, again, you will have to follow the shape. I'm darkening the base. That is a place where most shadow will fall. And I'm making the outlines clear. Now we have seen where the light and the shadow will fall. So we are going to again make these pencil strokes to make it even more clearer. So wherever there is shadow, I'm just going to darken that place a little more. And now the curve which gets the shadow, so the strokes are going to be curvy here. So this is the part where this stem originates. So it is a little lower. Hence, the shadow falls here on this part. Now, we are going to repeat the strokes that we have already made. So I'll apply the strokes where there is dark and apply lighter strokes of pencil where there is light. Now we will give shading to the stem of the apple. So it's going to be dark at the place where it is adjoined to the apple and then a little light at the top. Then it's going to be darker at the bottom and lighter at the top, because the light falls on the top part. Moving on to the leaf. First, we are going to darken the shape. So we are going to darken the vein and the midline of the leaf. So these are the veins of the leaf. First, we will darken them, and then we are going to make the lines in the direction of those ans. Similarly, on the other side as well, we are just going to make pencil strokes in the direction of the leaf. So the leaf is pointed at the base, that's a tip of the leaf. Now we are going to darken the outline. 4. Smudging : Now we are going to see the smudging. So here using finger tip, I'm going to smudge the part, which has dark pencil strokes. So we are doing this so that the pencil lines are not clearly visible. So we are smudging the pencil lines. So wherever there are darker lines, I'm just smudging them. And here also at the center, the lines are lighter, and there also, we are going to smudge. Now taking an eraser, we are going to show the reflection. So we are going to erase this part which gets the reflection. So use the tip of the eraser to show where there is light. So I'm just erasing some part on the middle part of the apple. That's a place where the light falls or the reflection happens. So just erase a little bit, not too much. It should be well blended within the other pencil strokes. And then I'll just define the outline with a pencil, so I'll apply dark lines here at the outline and darkening this part of the apple to show the shadow. A Use your fingertip to smudge this part again and smudge the part wherever there is dark shadow. And take the eraser and just using the tip of the eraser, we are going to make this curve. So here, there is the part where light falls. But that's a very thin line, so you don't have to do it in a thick way just use the tip of the eraser. O. Now moving on to the right side of the apple, we are going to mark the place where we are going to apply the strokes where it's darkest. So again, making rounded curvy vertical lines, we are making the place darker to show the shadow. Use the fingertip again to smudge this part. Taking pencil again and making the top part of the apple where there is some shadow. So I'm just going to show the shadow here on the top a little bit. And then we are going to show the shadow of the apple. So here at the base of the apple, we are going to make horizontal lines, horizontal random lines, and then we are going to smudge it with the fingertip. Then using an eraser, on the left side of the apple, using the tip of the eraser, we are just going to make a straight curvy line to show the reflection of the light. Use the eraser to erase any extra lines that you have made outside of the apple. Hope you enjoyed the class. Do share with me what you create. I would love to see what you make and do leave a review. Look forward to seeing you in the next class. Thank you for watching.
