1. Introduction: Welcome to the one word journaling for beginners class. My name is Armand Jorie, the founder of Armani Talks, a media company which helps engineers and entrepreneurs improve their communication skills. A great way for us to improve our communication skills is through journaling. The unique thing with journaling is that there's a lot of different ways to do it. There's creative writing, there's gratitude journal, there's bullet journaling. There's so many different types. But in this class we are going to be learning about the one word journaling technique. And it's very innovative. Something that is going to help you out tremendously. Within this class, we are going to first learn what is the one word journaling technique? What are some of the benefits we can expect? How to choose our one word, how to choose the medium, how to choose our pen. In the end, I will give you a final project that will allow you to implement this journaling style to your life. If you're ready and excited for this class, I look forward to seeing you inside. 2. What is One Word Journaling: The one word journal link technique is when we choose one word and we keep writing that same word over and over again for a set amount of time. 3. Benefit of One Word Journaling: Now you may be thinking, wait a minute, there's so many different types of journaling out there. Why am I exactly just choosing one word and just writing it over and over again? Here's the unique thing. There is a different type of journaling for what you seek to improve. If someone is coming to me and saying, hey, I feel as though I'm not a creative individual. I feel as though I'm very restricted. Anytime I'm trying to blog, do you have any advice for me? The main thing that I'm going to get from this individual is that they're trying to improve their creative writing skills for them. I would recommend free flow journaling. This is when they write uninterrupted whatever is on their mind. This will allow them to understand that they have a lot of ideas. They just need to move out of their own way. Other times someone will come to me and say, I just can't concentrate. Do you have any tips for that person? I would recommend the one word journaling technique because here's how the mind works. The mind is a lot like an ocean. There's a lot of different waves. The waves represent different thoughts. The thing is that people normally struggle to focus because they just keep going from one wave to another to another. What the one word journaling technique does is that it gets one word. It makes you use that word and follow through with all the waves. It doesn't matter if you're getting a thought from something in the fifth grade, you're still writing that same word down. It doesn't matter if you're nervous about the best man speech you have to give next week, you're still writing that same word down. It doesn't matter if you think is this one word journaling technique really going to work. You're still writing that one word down there that you stick with that one word, Despite the different waves there that you improve your concentration skills soon, rather than trying to kill these different waves. It's something that you can simply coexist with. Therefore, the one word journaling technique is a fascinating way in order to boost your concentration skills with concentration skills. It's not about doing too many things, It's just about doing one thing over and over again. 4. How to Choose Your Word: Now, for the one word, how do you choose it? I can't quite tell you exactly how to choose it because this is something that is going to be personal to you. But I will give you some advice. The first thing that I would recommend is that it's not too long. We don't want to be basically writing a sentence which isn't really a sentence, but the word is so long that it feels like a sentence as we're trying to write it. We want a very short word for me. The word that I keep writing over and over again is the reason why is because my name is man, my business name is Armani. There's this connection that I have with this word due to me having some emotional connection with it. I like to write this word over and over again. It's very short. In addition to it being short, it would also help if there is some emotional connection to it. If you don't have an emotional connection to it, that's also fine because what you will notice is that the more that you keep writing it over and over again, the more that you're cultivating an emotional connection towards it. For the whole emotional aspect, it's a bonus if you already like it, but if you don't, it's fine, you'll cultivate it later on. The main thing that we want to focus on is that it's a word that we will feel comfortable writing over and over again. Because depending on how many times you're writing it, it should be easy, okay? It should be something that you're not dreading. Okay? Brainstorm on a word like that, and once you zone in on it, stick with it. Because we're staying with this word long term. We're not going to keep getting one word, then discarding it. And getting another word and adopting it, then discarding it. We're sticking with one word. Okay? Build faith with this word, Put reps into this word, and inject life into this word. 5. How to Choose Your Medium: Now we need to choose our medium. As some people may ask, can I type this out? I would say no. I don't think you should type it out, because it's going to kill the effects that you can have with this journaling technique. If it's free flow, journaling by all means type it out. But with the one word journaling technique, I highly recommend you take the analog route and you write it out by hand. You got to choose your medium. This is where different people are different. I know some people that like the entire notepad. I know other people that actually buy a physical journal. Very small journal, by the way, strictly for this activity. I know certain people who get a binder put a bunch of papers in it and then just do their exercise there. This is something I believe you could experiment with because it's very difficult to decide what to choose from the very beginning. For me, I have a very small journal that I bought in bulk. I have ten journals that I'll buy at once and it'll last me for a very long time. Initially, I was trying it out with loose leaf papers, but it didn't feel personal to me. But I got these journals, it just felt right because they're all like these black journals with a bunch of standardized cream paper within. And it's something that feels comfortable with me. I would like you to choose a physical medium, experiment with the different mediums, and when you find one that resonates with you, you'll know it. 6. How to Choose Your Writing Instrument: Now we need a writing instrument. Should we choose a pencil or a pen? I would highly recommend you choose a pen over a pencil. Because if there is the pencil, the thing with the pencil is that we can always erase certain stuff from firsthand experience. I've noticed that when I was writing a word every now and then, I would zone off in la, la land. And then I'll mess up the word. And now I could just erase it and fix it up. The thing with the pen is that there are no do overs. If you messed up, then you got to live with it. And if you messed up, you definitely don't want to mess up again. Because in the future as you're reviewing back all these different words, you've wrote like, what the heck happened here without the do over of the pen? What happens is that we're way more mindful in writing our word down. I would highly recommend you choose a pen now for the different types of pen, that's up to you, but I would highly recommend a gel pen. The reason why is because we're writing by hand, and when we're writing by hand, these micro muscles are being engaged with our hand. We don't want too much attention. Okay. With ballpoint pens. Every now and then there are tensions that are building up within the arm. Within the forearm, it'll go to the, if it goes to the arm, it'll hit the neck. Eventually, if you stick with it, your body would adjust. If you really like ballpoint pens, you're saying, no, this is my thing, go for it. There may be some initial pain in the beginning, but your body will adjust. But if you don't want that pain too much in the beginning, then the gel pen, it's very smooth, there's less control. That also forces you to focus more. You don't want to let the looseness of the gel pen take you out of your groove. Now your entire mind, body, intellect is with the task. I would recommend you choose a pen. Whichever pen you choose is really up to you. 7. How Long Should You Journal: How long should you do it? This, once again, is something that is going to be based on your lifestyle. They will do it for 20 minutes a day. Other people, they will not stop until the entire page is filled up. Whatever you do, I highly recommend that you end up making it consistent for the long run. If you're going to do it once a week, then make sure you're consistently doing it once a week. If you're going to do it every day, then do it every day. If you're going to do it every day and you're not going to stop until the page is entirely covered with your word, then you got it. Be consistent. The thing with this journaling technique is that even though we're just choosing one word, that's the main mantra that all these students are going to be following. There's a certain personal twist that we can add to it. We're up for grabs on what medium that we're going to choose, the physical one. We're up for grabs on which type of pen. We're going to choose brand wise. We're up for grabs for how long we want to do it. But the main thing to do is that whatever we choose we got to be consistent with it. We can't just keep hopping around. Otherwise, the one word journaling technique loses its potency. Be consistent consistency compounds and the more that it compounds, the more that your concentration skills sharpen. 8. How to Deal with Boredom: Let's be real. Building concentration skills is not always the funnest thing out there. But there's beauty to it. There's beauty to it because it doesn't matter how wealthy you are, you can never purchase concentration skills. It must be earned. Since we have to earn it every now and then, it is going to get boring. I want to give you some advice on how to deal with the boredom that you may at times feel when doing the one word journaling technique. The first thing I want you to understand is that the boredom, it's going to come and go as you're beginning your journaling entry. What's going to happen is that initially you're starting off very enthusiastic, you're going to be like, wow, I'm really doing this, huh? Then later on, it's just the same word over and over again. And now you're feeling bored. When you're feeling bored, don't just be like, okay, well the rest of the activity is going to be boring. Emotions work like roller coasters, it's very entertaining then. It's boring, it's very entertaining again then it could be boring, and then it's entertaining again. Stick through the entire emotional rollercoaster. One of the reasons a lot of people struggle with concentration skills is because they struggle with going through the rollercoaster. They're always thinking that something is going to be exciting the entire time. The second that is boring, they're like, well, it's time to quit this journaling technique. It's going to build grit. One way that we build grit is by sticking with the emotional roller coaster. That's one advice I want to give you in regards to the boredom, it's going to come and go. The second advice that I would like to give you is that every now and then you want to switch your perspective. What's going to happen is that at times you're just writing the full word and it's going to be very quick. Other times I want you to focus on one letter at a time. And focus on each dimension of that letter As you're using your pen, touching it to the paper, and you're bringing that one letter to life. This changes your perspective from the whole word to the individual letters. This is another way that you'll fight boredom. Not kidding when I say this, but you'll lose a sense of time. It'll just feel as though it's you and this word. There's different ways to get excitement, especially as you're doing this journaling technique. The first advice is that deal with the emotional rollercoaster. And the second advice is be able to switch your perspective from focusing on the whole word to focusing on the individual letters. 9. Final Project: Congratulations for making it to the end of the class. Now is the time for the final project. For your final project, you are going to try out the one word journaling technique. Number one, choose your word of choice. Number two, choose your medium of choice. Number three, choose your writing instrument of choice. Number four, write the word over and over again as long as you want to. Once you are done with your first ever entry, I want you to create a report on your experience. What was it like? If you would like, you could share the word that you wrote. But I know a lot of people like to keep this personal. No need to say exactly what word you chose. But within the report, I want you to explain. Was the word, did it have any personal meaning to you? What about the process of actually writing the word? Was your arm getting sore? Did you like the medium that you chose? Get as detailed as you possibly can. Because the more details that you add onto this report, the more that you understand whether or not you want the one word journaling technique to be a part of your life. You'll feel a certain type of way after your first ever entry and that's when you can decide, is this something that I want to be in, my lifestyle. Okay. Try it out for yourself. Create the report posted on the final project section, right on below.
