1. Introduction: Hello, My name is Oka. I'm a Dutch designer with the passion for smart and sustainable design sisters, tiny houses, nomadic architecture and smart furniture. I'm working on tiny houses for the past seven years now and learn a lot off design tricks that I pretty much using all my tiny house designs. I really love this story and the idea behind the tiny house movement hers because it's way more focused on the designing of lifestyle than traditional architectural design. The house needs to fit like a custom made code. It needs to fit exactly right. But you don't have many options. That's why you need to think about what you really need. That's the second thing I loved. Designing smart and efficient spaces elements for your house has two same comfort and everything you need just as a normal house. This class is for people who want to design their own tiny house or people who want to learn basic architectural skills and smart design techniques in his class. I am mainly gonna focus on the interior because I think that's the most fun, interesting and important part of designing a tiny I will use the dimensions off a traditional tiny house on wheels as a guideline through the course, but feel free to use your own dimensions. You can also use a room in your own house or apartment to transform it into a small space. You can apply the theory on old sorts of interior projects. There's so many creative options and fun elements you can use. It is course I will share his money as possible. I will talk about simple tips and tricks for saving space, but also how to position your interior to make it a energy and cost friendly. Seven. You can save a lot of money by creating a compact, smart interior. This glasses stuff. So it's fun, tiny house ideas that will work, and I will explain you. Why don't work by explaining these principles. All right, just hop on and roll to the class and let's get started
2. The architectural design process: the architectural design process. You've probably noticed that designing can be a chaotic, complex job to do, especially when designing a compact, tiny home because of the many different things that have to come together. That's why we have to organize the design process as good as possible so we can make good decisions at the right time. In the process, it will be more like this. We go forward step by step. But sometimes you have to go back one step because the result isn't way you wanted. I often compare this process was making a puzzle I like to compare. The design process was puzzling because in a brilliant design, all the pieces fit perfectly together. The process of making a puzzle is also similar. You start by selecting a puzzle you like by looking at the beautiful pictures in the store . You look at something that appeals to you or inspires you. We doing your home, you open the box, you will see that all the pieces are totally mixed up. But you know it's gonna be a pretty picture in the end. You know, you can put the pieces together because you know what the entries old will be the beautiful picture you see on top of the puzzle box. In a sense, designing is the same. That's why I have organized a design process off this course as if you were making a puzzle so that you understand why you take every step. Every step has a clear goal. And if you take enough time, you will notice your resign starts to shape into a beautiful picture with this story and with well considered choices, a good, well thought out design we started with your vision. What do you see? What are you looking for? And then go design or what do you find a good example off the time years accident? In his second step, we're gonna translate those pictures into requirements, their conditions. We're putting the puzzle pieces on the table by defining your own personal desires and needs and what design elements will fit with your lifestyle. I've made a design template on skill that will help you make your requirements visual by cutting them out. After that, we will make a framework to narrow down the options by looking at how much space you actually have does make sure plan realistic we do. It is also by drawing the dimensions of the floor plan on scale. In Step four, we start putting the pieces together. This is where we start designing. This is the most fun but challenging step, but I will help you by sharing some smart design techniques, methods and principles. But the best way to give you guys some tips and tricks is to use some examples off common tiny house plans. We will do this in the last step. I made some basic tiny house designs and try to explain why I made certain decisions. You can use these threats in your own puzzles to make the floor plan more efficient and well organized.
3. Step 1 - Envisioning (Moodboard): and visioning. At the end of this class, I would love you to have a basic set up for your tiny house. A tiny house floor plan with a bathroom kitchen and sleeping love was most important. A design that perfectly Fitzhugh. That's why we have to find out what in your opinion, makes a good design. What is your vision? This can be anything and is usually intuitive or something you see in your mind. But for most people, it's something they saw on being dressed instagram or YouTube. There are a lot of inspiring designs made by others, and by collecting the designs that speak to you, we will find out what your personal taste and prefers is. Our. For example, my house needs to be well organized Friday. Find pictures on Pinterest that explained, is the best and make a mood board or print the mountain a piece of paper but make it official for yourself. This can be detailed aspects like a surgeon, staircase or kitchen a designer used. It doesn't have to be a tiny house interior at all, but try to find at least three examples off tying houses that come close to what you envision? Put all the pictures together. A really easy way to do this is Pinterest. Collect at least 20 pictures after you have made a pink dress boards or mood board. We gonna put words to the pictures is an important step and it helps you to clear up what you like in your house. But it's also an important skill. Designers are really good at a good desire is good in analyzing and observing as able to name why certain things work or not In a design, you can learn to skill by simply naming two things. You're seeing a picture, What do you see? And do you like it? And then ask yourself, Why do I like this is gonna help you to go from I like this interior to I like this and this specific elements in a picture because it does dis and dis to the atmosphere, you can focus on the following subjects. Well, analyzing your mood board first is a space. So what do you think about the floor? Plan to set up or dimensions of a certain space? Is the bedroom big enough for you? And do you like the combinations off the kitchen and delivering together. This is more about the overall set up of the interior. The bigger picture. The question is, do you see yourself living here? Second is elements. So what do you see specifically in this space? Like the couch, the folding table, The sleeping loved her the way someone combined storage with a staircase. And the last subject is style Soto look and feel, or the atmosphere the interior creates. This can be a specific item in a picture or into would color. For example, this doesn't have to match with a set of or fear interstellar till we're looking at specific items. It's about the feeling, the colors, materials and interior style gift. You don't make it too complicated. You can also pick images that just feel good and speak to your imagination Are pictures that just inspire you. But in this stop, we try to figure out why they inspire you. Oldies subjects are gonna help you to narrow down your design requirements, their conditions, which we're going to focus on in the next step. By naming the design aspects in a picture, you're developing the skill you will look to a picture like how a designer will look to a picture or even better, you understand why a designer made certain choices in a design. There's an example of how you can look to just one picture and try to name the design aspects. This is a tiny house I designed a year ago. There are lots of aspects I like in the interior, of course, but imagine you've added this picture to your mood board because you like it as well. First, we focus on the space. Every functionality of the house is put in a certain spot. But you see it's not divided by walls or doors. You can look from the lounge into the sleeping love into the kitchen through the roof window. You can see that it has a spacious, an open field to it. That's why we call this an open floor plan. The kitchen area is a multi functional area where you can cook, eat and work and is also part of the living room. This largest space is a lounge, and it's focused to the garden. It makes a connection with outdoors because off doors are positioned, then the elements you see you see a bar you see a staircase in the back, you see that the interior is all combined into one big element. You see big doors, you see a lounge, etcetera, and the last thing you can focus on is the atmosphere you consider. That fringe is made in one big element of black, which is in contrast, which would Older walls are made of warm brown radish wooed, and most of the interior is made black. But the couch is made in a lighter color, so it marks a different area. You also see industrial steel elements. You see many natural materials like cork on the floor and a wound on the ceiling and walls , and it has a spacious and open feeling. These are just a few words you can give to a picture when you're analyzing it.
4. Similarities (Figure out your style): similarities. All right, great. Once you've named the different aspect you find important for your tiny house, we're gonna look for similarities. Similarities usually give a big clue off something you like. Maybe you like to contrasts or natural materials. The dark root delight colors, the open space. Or maybe you like compact designed interiors trying to come up with at least three things for every subject you found important for your own house design. So space, the elements and his style in a picture writing these things down are gonna make your design better because you know where you need to focus on that this step is kind of like choosing to picture off the puzzle. In the end, you can share your plan with your fellow classmates and explain what you try to accomplish . And, of course, if it worked out for you assignment one right down design aspects you find important
5. Step 2 - Requirements (Conditions): requirements. The second is putting the pieces on the table. You can start with the subjects that it came out of your mood board. I've added a template into Project Folder for Eugene download. There are a few lists with requirements you can fill out First is envisioning, So the things you've written down in a previous lesson the second list ISS personal items and needs. It's about your stuff, clothes, appliances, but also for ensure you want to take with you or you like to buy for your new design. Writing down in the second column, you can ride down the dimensions of the items. This is very important, the more specific you can be. More details. Your design will become, for example, a two person bat, a big lounge shower, workspace kitchen. And then also the question. How big does your kitchen need to be? Etcetera. In a template, you find a bunch of items you can cut out. They are already made on the right scale. His way. You can make your list of requirements into real objects. You can also draw on some of your own furniture, Of course, integrated below every square is 10 inches by 10 inches or 25 centimeters, by 25 centimeters. The skill of the template is one on 50. That means that a table of 100 centimeters wide would take four squares, etcetera, and the next step, we're gonna make a framework with same scale assignment to allowed the list and cut out the pieces on the ride skill.
6. Step 3 - Dimensions: I mentions. Now we've put all the pieces on the table. We can start puzzling now. What you always do when you're puzzling is to find a corner pieces. So you know the limits and the dimensions. These can be things, as building restrictions are the dimensions of your trailer, try to figure out what the restrictions are in your country. In a template, you can find a great on skill so you can draw the framework off your floor. Plan on scale. This way you get a realistic few off how big your tiny house is gonna be. Most tiny houses are not much longer than seven meters because of the weight restrictions, and most tiny houses are no wider than 2.5 because of the allowed with off the trailers. If you're transforming a room in your house or apartment, just write down the inner dimensions of space. All right, go ahead and draw the framework off your tiny house for plain by using a grid into template assignment. Three. Draw the framework off your tiny house floor plan
7. Step 4 - Designing: designing. Okay? How? We've placed all the puzzle pieces on the table. You can start puzzling. You start playing, try to create spaces with the puzzle pieces you have being already created. What you see in your imagination, how would you like to make the kitchen in the living room, and how do they relate to each other? You may find out after a while that you have too many puzzle pieces because it won't fit. In this case, you can go back a step and adjust your requirements.
8. Design methods: Sometimes you need to use a different design method. I will show you a few methods that can help you get ideas or make your ideas visual. Three D Modeling The first technique is one I use all the time. Three d modeling with, for example sketch IP. You can download it for free. I'm gonna make a course specifically about designing a tiny house in sketch IP so full of me if you want to get noted when it's done in skin ship, you conjour aw, every puzzle piece in three D. So in the exact size one on one, this gives a very detailed picture. You can draw a three dimensional framework and start puzzling all the pieces together. You can also add it a piece when it doesn't fit. Or if you think your kitchen is too small, just make it bigger. This way you can make a well thought off design in a really fun way. The next one is a bit more radical, but really fun is called prototyping. You basically make a prototype of your house with simple materials like ropes, sticks and wooed so you can actually stand in your fruit. Your home that it is a lot with friends and family is a great tool to see how big your tiny house is gonna be. Usually, I come up with the best ideas while making a prototype, because you can really feel the space and see immediately if something is too big or too small. I would advise every time you have a designer to make a prototype at least once so you can see the space. It really brings up a lot of ideas and creativity, and it's so much fun sketching all right off course you needed by a sketchbook. When designing a tiny house to make notes and to process ideas, I literally have 20 sketchbooks. Full it ideas, and they're a great tool for sketching out small ideas so you won't forget them. It doesn't have to look pretty. It's a way to put your ideas on the table to see if it works for you.
9. Design principles: Thies. I am principles. Design methods can help you to make a design more efficient and transparent. This is mainly about two practical and efficient side of your design. In addition, there are also these I'm principles that's gonna help you improve to feel atmosphere and style off your design. So it is about how your house feels and the atmosphere it produces. I want to share some of these principles with you, but you can create an atmosphere where you feel at home. These are kind of like design tools or rules designers used to create inspiring spaces. Contrast. Contrast. Make sure designs stand out and can make it look more organized, used wide to balance it out because too much door colors can make a room look smaller colors have can be found in nature, feel natural and are timeless. This makes your design more style resistant. Balance balance means to create a proper organization of elements to create a visual balance. A lack of balance creates tension. This can disturbed the harmony off a composition symmetry, things you can use to create balance, its symmetry or repeating objects. For example, when a space is evenly split into two sides that mirror each other. Symmetry can create order, formality, coolness and stillness, which adds study atmosphere in your house. Asymmetry. Off course. The opposite is asymmetry. This is typically created with an odd number of elements, but when you do, it is intentional. It can look informal, natural and energetic and slightly more alive and relaxed. Focus and emphasis. Focus is used to center. Attention you can do it is by using contrasting colors. For example, with focus, you can put emphasis on a certain focal point, like a fireplace, a painting or a window with a focal point to a window or a door. You can make a connection with outside and unified nature around you in a tiny house. A simple thing as a teacup can be a focal point. Try not to have too many things because it can create chaos and disharmony. Unity. Unity is achieved when all off the different elements in a design work together to create a unified whole, like they belong to each other. This can be a challenge, but the result is very powerful. Basically, every single item in your home can contribute if it drops away from it, it usually becomes a focal object. Unity make sure design into related, balanced and organized, which is very important in a tiny house ratios. Chief unity are similarity. So repeating callers repeating shapes or textures and lines grouping the easiest way to create unity is by grouping elements together you can do It is, for example, by group in the kitchen with the stairs in the closets, alignment arranging elements so their edges are lined up. The viewers I will follow to continue in line or edge from one element to another and a mind who grew them to get her because of the connection. All right now we learned some design principles. I want to talk about some design techniques that can be specifically useful for your tiny house to save space and just tricks. To make a clear and smart design I want to do it is by sharing a few examples off common time house designs
10. Tiny House Example #1: examples. All right, The best way to give you guys some tips and tricks issues some examples off common tiny house plans. I made a few basic designs and try to explain why I made certain decisions. You can use these tricks in your own design to make a floor blend mawr efficient and well organized. Example. One. Here you see a basic framework off a tiny house. The inner dimensions are seven meters long, by 2.4 meters wide and 3.4 meters at the highest side of the ceiling. Because of the 3.4 meters off vertical space, he often see that people put a sleeping loved on. One of the size of the house is creates extra living space. I basically always put the bedroom on the loft because it creates a privacy zone. The whole ground floor is living area. Any upper floor is for sleeping. You can also add another love to create an extra sleeping area or just for storage. Even though it's very practical toe. Have more storage space by adding a loved. It also costs you vertical space was gift your house, the open and spacious feel to it every loved needs stairs. The stairs are usually beautifully made, and people put a lot of effort in it because it usually is a center of the house. I always make sure that the stairs are placed on the side with the highest ceiling. This way, you know you have the most headroom. If you need to climb up your bed, I usually start with the love and the stairs in a design and try to defy to space into zooms. A trick to make the staircase look smaller is to make a stool or table from the first few steps. This way you create a multi functional living room, which safe space. You can also make the first few steps into storage to save even more space. Usually, people put a lot of creativity into the staircase. Give your stairs a second functionality. Such a storage. By making the steps smaller, you could make the stairs steeper so it takes up less space or make it as thin and transparent as possible, so it will take up less visual space. Start with the main bigger volumes. First, the main volumes aren't loved. The kitchen, the bathroom and the stairs the lounge is usually put in a remaining space, so by designing these main volumes in a compact wing, you will save space for your living room. Another smart trick to make a comeback and efficient set up is to place everything under the loft. This way you create a beautiful living room with a lot of for nickel space, which gives the house a spacious feeling. And by grouping them together, you create it and organized and balanced design another elements that can take up a lot of space. It's a dining area. A smart way to make a table is a fulling table with a painting on it or a mirror. So when it's not being used, it's just a painting. But when you fold it out, it's a big table for five persons, which usually takes up. A lot of space were combined the table with storage. So when you're gonna eat and fold out table the plates, cups and glasses of beer, the space you safe would. Combining the main volumes into a compact interior goes directly to your living area. I always see these of the challenge to end up with this much space is possible any area where I will be the most, so I can place a nice, comfortable sofa and I will still be able to have friends over. This is how this set up will look like very compact and efficient. Would enough had room when going up to the loved a big L shaped kitchen and a nice living area with a lot of vertical space?
11. Tiny House Example #2: example, two and his example. I will put the bathroom in the back with space for the technical installations in the corner. This way, you can put both the shower and a kitchen close. We'd shelter for short water pipes, which saves energy and money, and it makes your pie obstruction more organized A smart trick for people who want even more headroom so they can also stand straight up on the loved Is your lower the last steps on the staircase. This way, you don't have to crawl in and out of your bed anymore. By lowering the staircase, you create a space below it. You can use his area to create a desk because you don't need as much a space when sitting on a chair as when you're standing. Samos a toilet. When you sit down, you don't need to space above your head, and you can use the space on the left. This is how this sort of looks like by lowering the staircase
12. Tiny House Example #3: example, three sidelines can be used to create optic space you can do it is by making an open floor plan and to use a minimal amount of walls. In this case, you see the dresses sideline that goes from the left to the right of the house, straight through the bathroom. The bathroom is not limiting the space. You're gonna also plays a window as a focal point on both ends, which will emphasize the space even more. You can also turn the stairs 90 degrees so you can walk to work the highest part of the ceiling. By placing this staircase like this, you create an open floor. The staircase is not dividing the space in half. You can now use the space for whatever you want or make a multi functional area with smart furniture. Also, by placing the stairs like this, you cut the loved in two halfs. This way, you can use the star case to access the bedroom and the other sides to access the wardrobe or storage space. A bar creates extra kitchen space of are usually becomes the center of the house where you can work, cook or have dinner with friends You can also make it moveable so you can use it as a table outside a smart way. Degreed more storage space is to make a stage. For example, under the living area, try not to put too much storage space, and Clausen's along the walls is make sure tiny house look even more narrow and smaller. Visit. How does set up looks like very spaces and efficient.
13. Tiny House Example #4: example for another tip is to create closets instead of wolves. This way you save materials, and it makes you design more compact and organized. And his example. I put the bathroom in the middle of the house. Sort of wolves around bathroom can be transformed into storage with placing a bathroom in the center. You do fight to space into rooms, a great set up for people who don't want to sleep on a loft and, of course, a living room at the other side of the house. You can add a loft to create extra storage space above the bathroom. This way, you create space for a kitchen under the love for a very compact set up. It will look like this you see to the house is less spacious than in the examples I share before. This is a big disadvantage by placing the bathroom at the ground floor and dividing the space into rooms, on the other hand, is more comfortable for when you don't want to climb on your bat
14. Tiny House Example #5: example. Five. I wanted to show you guys one example of a compact set up for a family with two kids. By using bunk bats, you can easily create sleeping space for two kids. The loved can then be used for a private master bedroom. For the parents. You can even add a little workspace or playing area. And with Children, you often have more stuff. Tryto Philip Useless space with storage space like you can see above the desk. This space doesn't really add to the living space, so it's better to use it for storage. Endorse. You can create space by making indoor windows this way. You connect two rooms with each other. This is how this example looks like very compact and efficient, even with two kids.
15. Final Thoughts: final thoughts. All right, I really hope that you learned a lot from this course. I realized that there is many more to tell about designing a proper timing house. But I think this was a great way to start or get inspired. I hope you come over brilliant ideas, and I hope you share them into projects folder so others can learn from you. This was part one that was focused mostly on the floor plan and set up off the interior over tiny house. There are many more. Some one share with you guys. So if you would like to learn more, just follow me. Take care.
