1. Introduction: Hi there and welcome to this beginner's class on how to 3D design, a pencil in Autodesk Fusion 360. This class is for anyone who wants to learn more about how to 3D design simple 3D objects that are actually the main building blocks that you need In order to create more complicated 3D models. You will be learning how you can use the extrude tool in different ways. The extrude tool is the one that you will find you'll be using quite a lot when you're creating models. And as a beginner, it is essential that you know how to use it because it makes your modelling process a lot easier. Hi, my name is Hendrien Horn and I'm a 3D designer and ceramic artist from South Africa. I quite enjoy illustrating. So pencils are something that I use quite a lot. The shape of the pencil does not necessarily look too difficult to 3D model. So as a beginner in 3D design, I decided to give it a go. But it did take me quite a while before I found a quick and effective way of creating the design, which I guess you could say is code for. It took me a really long time to figure it out. Getting to know how to use your tools within the software in different ways will ultimately help you improve your overall design process. What you will need for this class is the Fusion 360 software installed on your computer. A mouse with a scroll wheel. And the basic knowledge of the Fusion 360 software and layout. If this is your first class, I would suggest rather go have a look at my Beginner's guide to 3D design. There I show you how to use the mouse in different ways with regards to zooming, orbiting, and how to move your model around. And most importantly, the layout of the software and where everything is. Because in the beginning it can be quite overwhelming when you're looking at the screen and you don't know where to start. You don't necessarily have to have a pencil with you when you're doing the class. You can have one with you as a reference, but other than that you don't need anything else. Hi, my name's Hendrien and welcome to this class.
2. Project: We will start by sketching our pencil and then extruding the shape using the extrude tool in different ways to create the overall design. You will have quite a lot of creative freedom with your model and you're welcome to change any of the measurements whilst we're working. That's what's really great about experimentation with regards to 3D design. While you're creating your model, you are welcome to change your mind and make some changes. It's really good to experiment with your designs because what you start out with might not necessarily look the same when you're finished. And that in itself is really exciting. We will then add some appearance and you're welcome to finish off your pencil in the material or color that you like. We will be saving the model and then we will be capturing an image of the model within the software. I would like to encourage you to share your image with the rest of the class and share your creativeness. Please don't be shy. I really look forward to seeing what you create. Well, if you're ready to design. Let's get to class.
3. 3D Model Pencil Body: Let's start by going to create, create sketch. Here on the right-hand side on our view cube, click on the top. Let's look at it from the top, and we'll click this plane. Now a pencil isn't usually just round. It does have some edges, so I'll be creating a polygon. So we'll go to Create - polygon. And we'll be making a inscribed polygon. And we'll click on the origin - release, drag out. I'm going to set the size to 30 millimeters. And if I press Tab on my keyboard, I'm going to make sure that we have six sides. Yes. And enter, zoom in a bit. Now let's create a circle around this polygon We'll press C on our keyboard for Center diameter circle, click on the origin, drag out, and the full diameter will then be 60 millimeters, click and release. If we turn our sketch, we need to extrude the shape to make the body. So I'll go finish sketch. We'll press E on our keyboard for extrude. The profile we want to extrude. Let's make sure we select all of these profiles. Now a quick way to do this is to left-click and drag your mouse across. And it should select all of the shapes. If it doesn't, you'll see that the shape is white. Now the direction we want to drag it in. If you're a little confused, look here at the top on your view cube on the right. We're looking at it from the bottom at the moment, so we'll be dragging it up that way. I'm going to make it 490 millimeters so I can change it. here. Make sure it's on new body and say, Okay. If we look at our body, you'll see the lines here. We can't see them that well. That's because if we go here to display settings, make sure your visual style is set to shaded with visible edges. And then we'll be able to see our edges properly.
4. 3D Model Tip of Pencil: Let's focus on making the tip of the pencil here at the top. We'll go to Create, Create Sketch. And the plane we'd like to work on is this front plane. Let's zoom in and move to the top. We'll hit P on our keyboard for project, the geometry, we'd like to select tis this top line. Make sure you've got the right selection filter selected. You can select the entire body, but it's not necessary. Let's just click on the first one and say, Okay. Now here on the left, if we put our bodies off, click on the eye. And there is the line for the top of the pencil. Let's press L on our keyboard for line. Now let's hover over this line. And once it's in the middle, it will show you a triangle, which means it's the midpoint. Once that pops up, click release, and let's drag up, make sure it's 90 degrees and I'm going to set it at 90 millimeters. And Enter. Let's right-click and say repeat line. That's just a shortcut to repeat the tool that you used before. Let's click on the top. Release drag down and make sure you click on the point at the bottom. Now the shape is enclosed. We know the shape is enclosed because it shows up in blue. I'm going to press Escape. And we can just drag this distance out. Now I'm going to say Finish Sketch. Let's put our body back on. And the next part we'll be doing is revolving the shape around. So we'll go to Create, Revolve. It's already selected the profile for me. If it's not selected, make sure you've selected it. The axis we'll be using is this center line that we've created. And here it's revoled it 360 degrees. You'll see here with the angle, you can also change it. Let's make it a 180, and then it only revolves it halfway. Let's change this back. Let's change the operation to New body and say, Okay, Now we need to create the tip of the pencil because this is still just one body, which means we need to split the body here. And how to do that is by using a construction plane to split the body. So we'll go to construct, select an offset plane. If we zoom out, turn our pencil. We're going to select this plane at the bottom, the ZXS plane. Let's drag it up. Now, depending on how big you'd like the tip of the pencil to be, I wante it around 550 millimeters. That looks good. I''m going to say, Okay. Now let's split. this body. We'll go to Modify - Split body. The body we want to split is this top part of the pencil. The splitting tools is this construction plane. And we know it's cutting the body because it's showing up in red. And we'll say, okay, and there are our two bodies. Let's switch this construction plane off. And that's starting to look a little bit more like a pencil.
5. Streamline 3D Model: Now a pencil has lead or the color going all the way through the pencil, which means we need to extrude this part here all the way down. So we'll press E on our keyboard for extrude. The profile. We'd like to select is this little circle here. Now we can drag it all the way down. Here on Operation, make it new body. There we see it extrudes all the way out. But we just want it to go to the point right there. Say, Okay. No we've got the different parts. Here on the left-hand side, we've got the main body, the top, and the tip that we've created, and the center tube that we just created, that's the lead of the pencil and the color. Now at the moment we've got two bodies within this pencil, which means I just want to split this body using the tube that we've created so that we don't have two bodies in the same place. So we'll go to Modify - split body. The body we want to split is this main body, our splitting tools. If you can't selected it here, go here to the left and select the tube. Say, okay. Let's go to the body that we just created. We're going to right-click on it and say Remove. Now, like I said before, are pencil is not necessarily round. So we're going to extrude the polygon that we created in the beginning of our sketch. So let's go to our sketches and put it on. Let's press E on our keyboard for extrude - the profile. We want to select. are these six. Be careful not to select the center. And let's drag it. And there you can see it's cutting the pencil. So leave it on, cut and say, Okay, let's put our sketches off. And there is our pencil. Now it's created these weird lines here at the top. So to streamline my design, I'm just going to combine these two parts. Let's go to modify, combine. Let's click the bottom body, the tool body. Let's select this top part. Keep it on Join and say, OK, and there we go. That looks a lot better.
6. Adding Pattern: Now I'd just like to add some patterns to my pencil because at the moment it's still a little plain, so lets give it some features, Going to look at it from the front. Now I'd like to create a sketch on this front part of the body. So we'll go to Create, Create Sketch. And when it's asking us where we'd like to sketch, don't click on a plane. If you zoom in, click on the front part of the pencil. If I do that, you'll see if I rotate it. We're working on the front part of the pencil, not in the middle. I'm going to hit P for project on my keyboard. Let's select this front part and say, Okay, and now I can put my body's off here on the left. And there's the outline. I'm going to hit C on my keyboard for center diameter circle. And here at the top I'm just going to click anywhere, we don't have to be too specific. Click release, drag out. I'm going to set it at 20 millimeters and say, okay. Now I'd like these circles to run all the way down the line of the pencil over here. I don't have to go and draw every circle individually. A faster way to do this is to go to Create, go down to rectangular pattern. It's going to ask you the object. We'll select the circle. And the direction - we'll be going down. At the moment, we just have three selected. So if I drag it all the way down, you'll see the circles. There's just three. SSo let's Change it here on the right-hand side. Let's change it to 10, say okay. And there are our circles. I'm going to say Finish Sketch. Let's put our bodies back on. And here on the left, put our sketches on. Now I'll be using the split body tool again to create the circles so that they show up on the pencil. Because if I put my sketch off, you'll see the lines disappear. So let's put our sketch back on. We'll go to Modify - split body. The body we want to split is this pencil body. The splitting tools. Let's go and select each of these lines. If you're struggling to see the lines, you can put your bodies off. And you'll see they're splitting because they're showing up in red. If we move our sketch around, you'll see they'll split the body all the way through. Let's put our bodies on and say, OK. And there you see we've created some pattern. Now you're welcome to explore and have some fun with it. You're welcome to add some more patterns on the other faces of the pencil, like rectangles or triangles. But for my design, I quite like this, so I'm going to leave it like this. Before we move onto appearance. I just want to clean up here. I'm just going to put my sketches off on the left and just click on the arrow for the body's bringing everything in.
7. Adding Appearance: Let's go to Modify - Appearance. And with a pop-up box here at the bottom, you'll see there are quite a few materials that we can use. I'm going to start by looking at some of the colors. So when it comes to the paint colors, I'm going to move down here to the - powder coat rough. If you see this little arrow, that just means you need to download the color because it's not in your library. So I've already downloaded this red powder coat, but you don't have to download all of them. If you've downloaded one, you can click and drag in and drop. And here at the top, if you right-click on it, you can edit it. So you can change all the colors here so you don't necessarily have to download each color specifically. And you can also adapt the scale here, the rotation of the color, the roughness of the color, and the reflectiveness. We can close here. Now if we zoom into our pencil, there's a lot going on. And on this face I'd like a new color, but I'd like it to have the same properties as this color that I've just placed here. Which means if I go to the top here, I right-click and say Duplicate. I right-click on it again and say edit. And now I can change the color and say Done. And if I click on the face, I drag and drop. These two colors will now have the same properties. Because if I just drag any color from here and drag it in, the properties won't be the same with regards to the roughness and the reflectiveness. So this is just the easier way to do that. I'm going to right-click and say Duplicate again, right-click Edit. And I want to look at the tip of the pencil and what color - like there it is a bit lighter. So I'm going to click on the top. Click drag and drop. And sometimes when we're working, we tend to over populate this area with colors. So if they are colors that you're not using, you can right-click on the color and say an Unassign and delete, and you remove the color from the top because sometimes it can get quite confusing when there are way too many colors here at the top. So have some fun with your pencil and change some of the colors. Remember, you've also got other materials like wood, because here at the top of the pencil, I'd like to use pine. And I'm going to right-click on it and say edit. So enjoy changing your appearance. I'll see you on the other side. Now if at any point in time you just want to check what it looks like without the lines, we'll go down here to Display settings, visual style, and change it to shaded. Once you're happy with the overall look and your materials. Let's go close. And there is our pencil.
8. Save and Capture Image: Now let's quickly save our model. So we'll go to File - Save. I'm just going to call it Pencil. And I'll be saving it in my Skillshare folder. If you don't have a Skillshare folder yet, just create a new folder and name it Skillshare. And there are some of the other tutorials that I've already done on Skillshare, You are welcome to have a look at them and say Save. And now let's go and capture an image of our pencil so we can share it in the class. Go to File, Capture image. Now here with Image Selection, click on the drop-down. Now when it comes to the size, I usually tend to go for the largest sizes, just because if you select one of the smaller ones, you might cut off parts of your design. Make sure that transparent background is unticked. Because if you tick it and we capture the image, when you upload your image, you may have a black background and not a white one. Which means you might lose some definition or some colors that you'd like us to see. And we'll say, okay, and the name at the top here, change it to Pencil. And here on the bottom left, save to my computer, we're going to save it to my downloads folder. Let's say Save. And it's captured the image for me. Now experiment with different angles, have some fun. You can have a little bit of a photoshoot. You don't necessarily just have to upload one photo. You can take different angles and then upload it that way. But yeah, he's looking good.
