1. Stepping Your Game Up: are you a nadir? Occur shater, and now you're looking to expand your skills. And this the class for you. My name is Alex, and I'm a fiber artist behind Alex creates where I sell and make hand spun yarn and hands idea in this video show you how toe die your own yarn and even learn how to make hombre are I became a fiber artist through YouTube When I was 13 I learned how to knit and Cochet just by washing videos a year too intimidating and Cochet. I actually ended up teaching. My mom and my grandmother's out of Cochet actually gave my grammars a refresher and top my mom all the basics, so I kind of flipped the rose in That way, you'll be surprised how easy and enjoyable dyeing your own yarn is, and I hope that you'll feel inspired to die some yard for your next project.
2. Class Supplies: so materials you need for this dying class will be 100% wool yarn or yarn. That's mainly wool. It could be the lease. It could be a 75 to 80% wool. You'll need vinegar, just plain old white distilled vinegar or citric acid. You need a wash or plain. This soap don will do. You also need some die pots. This one's a stainless steel hotel pan. It's very helpful for special dying. You can also use enamel stock pots like this. Just do not use anything that's aluminum that dies could actually eat away at aluminum. Talking about dies. This is the one that I'm going to be using for the class is professional acid dyes these air from Dharma. There's also a car dies, but you can also use food coloring or Kool Aid. Some cooling powders have acid dying them. If you end up buying those, you will need toe. You'll need to buy the vinegar or the citric acid. You'll need a spoon for mixing tongs for picking up your yarn, moving and moving it around. You also need measuring spoons if you want to keep want to stay consistent with the amount of powder using. I like to use thes disposable spoons for speckle dying. I just grab a little bit off the powder and tap it over the yard. So these will be all the materials you need for dying. No, let's get started with her first class.
3. Speckled Dyed: All right, So in this pan, I've added water and half a cup of vinegar. Now I'm going to add the Hank off wool yarn. This hasn't been soaked or anything. It's completely dry, and it's going to place it into the pan like this in his exact form so that the Uranus all spread out and can open up. Just pushing it down with this spoon that I'm using. Just free are you see, not for food for you. This is just so I don't accidently contaminate anyone. Push just down until it's also if you need a little bit more water, add. But try not to add too much water when you're doing speckled yard. Because if you add too much water when you're doing speckles, you actually ended before out of colors bleeding. And that's not always did intention you want when you speckle dying yard. All right, I'm not gonna start speckle dying everything. So this is just some of the we'll die. I'm going to scoop up a little bit with this plastic spoons and then just tap the spoof my index finger over the yard, and that's what's gonna give you the little speckles like that. And now the fun part is we're going to come and dip into different colors and just happen here and there throughout your pan until you're happy with the outcome. Here's some purple. Now you just get the tip of the spoon and I tap it. This is a very bright purpose, kind of almost like I lighter purple. I really like it. And now hats and black. Here's a tip for when you're done with black black dye. Make sure you add a little bit extra vinegar, a little bit extra citric acid, because it's harder for protein fibres. Whoa in nylons to pick up black. I really need that extra help from the acid to pick it up easier. I do a very small sprint, both black, so that I have lots of black Sprinkles throughout the considerate. Here in this corner have some of this blue and some of this purple mixing together, which gives me we're giving more of like and almost navy blue. So you want to let this boarding for a couple of minutes or steam for a couple minutes. Andi could move it a little bit and then work on the other side. If you feel like you, what more of a uniform speckled look to the arm. You can see that the bottom gets a little bit, and the longer you leave it, it's gonna soak down to you See, the color bleeds through. You can always go back and add more of one college. We think you didn't had enough using two spots off green right here, so I'm gonna a little bit more. I'm being very gentle and thoughtful of where adding these colors. And I'm looking at this, and I'm thinking I might need something brighter. So I'm gonna try and find a brighter color and see what I can do at some of this very bright green. We could never have enough green, in my opinion, from tapping the green, the bright green around where the more earth agreements just to bring that so life a little . His little thing I like to do when I'm when I'm done with Japan actually tipped the spoon in the water that kind of clean it out a little bit and that's about it.
4. Ombre Dye: So for armory dying, you will need a stockpot with some water into enough water to cover up this balled up skein of yarn and about half a cup of distilled vinegar or two tablespoons of citric acid to this pot. Know that it's boiling. We're gonna add some die. I'm gonna admit about 16 tablespoons of dye. And when he used this color called Plum Dandy, I think it's in giving Burgundy color. So let's see what happens with that mix that up nicely entered already born. We don't need to wait for anything. You'll just add this ball into the water. We're gonna boy with this ball for about 15 minutes covered. Once we're done with that, I'll show you how to die our knitted, blank, ombre style. So it's been 15 minutes since I've added the ball of yarn into this spot, you can see the beautiful color it took. So what happened with this? Your knees, all the die that was outside in the pot was absorbed around the ball in the middle. We still have undateable give that ombre effect, and depending on the die or the call you picked, the column actually break and you might see a couple different colors with in the actual ball of yarn, which is pretty cool. Have a purple that doesn't goes from purple to pink You're gonna leave this on the side and let it cool off and then you wash it. So for dying in it'd blank hombre, I'm starting on a little bit about half the amount of added for the ball. So just about three inches of water and half a cup of vinegar. Now I'm gonna add 1/6 of a teaspoon of die and I'm gonna use this bright purple just for fun. Give it a good stir now for the knitted blank. I've rolled it up on this towel, but I'm gonna hang above the pot and submerge it submerged about three inches out of time every five minutes. So I'm gonna submerged up to here and then five minutes I'm gonna let it fall down a little bit more. So here this little trick I'm using, I've wrapped it into double and 1/2 my tongue right here, holding it on the edge of the pot so it doesn't grow any further into the actual water where the dies after five minutes pass and then a dip about the mortgages in Julie Pot. And I'm going to do this until half of the blank is into the water or until the water inside has no more die inside. So this is a little bit slower than the ball, but you get more of a slower Grady Int, um slower and even more even greater than the dying in the ball form. That's the drawbacks of dying blank versus ball. At the end of the day, they both ended being hombre.
5. Space Dye: So for the space dyed yarn, you will use a hotel pain like this or a stockpot. You're gonna add enough water to cover up the hank of yarn and about half a cup of vinegar or two tablespoons of citric acid. We're going to place the skin, the Hank off the other, into the pan. And we wanted to move around freely. You want a little bit more water? Then we used for the speckled one because you want the college for this one toe believe a little bit more, just just pressing down the yard and making sure that it's all been fully submerged. Now you can see right here that it's starting to boil a little bit, which means it's time to start at, even dies for this one, I'm gonna use plum dandy. Ask Tech, gold and silver. Great. And I would just be tapping it in a couple different places. But after a tap it, I'm gonna spread out this that die so that it's a little bit more predictable. So there's a gray. I'm gonna think of some of the plum dandy sprinkled some right here. You can't see it and now Sprinkle some of the Aztec gold. Almost see it spread a little bit already, but here's some of this asset gold. One of my favorite colors from a car dies. Now I'm gonna go back and a little bit more of the gray and some of the plum dandy right here in this corner. Now that I've added all the course where I want to be, I'm gonna come and mix them up a little bit within the water so that their solid little to no on died. This will give you more of you in the form of luck in the yard which will end up making it more predictable at it's being worked up. So do this with each section of the colors. You've had it. And if you find that the colors aren't spreading well, meet a little bit more water or just happen like this along. By doing this, you'll be dragging the water across, can adding it. Have you find you have too much die to do what I just did. There you move a little bit of the yard away from the edges so that to die nuts here in here moves in to the space we just made. And then it's gonna be absorbed by the yard that you just moved. Hoping that I make sure that everything is being soaked up and just let it do its thing for about five minutes. Turn it off for about 5 to 15 so it cools off and then we'll move on toe rinsing our yard.
6. Washing Yarn: Okay, so it's a wash. Your yard. You're gonna fill up a sink or the tub or stockpot with some warm water. You could add a couple drops of dish soap like dawn or any off brand dish electro have at home. You can also use what I like to use is a nice will wash. I like to use Koukal bear because they're American made and have a bunch of different scents going to use you, Colin, which is also another ninth wash. But if you end up using dish soap, just make sure to rinse out the soap. So you're in Prague doesn't end up all study with soap sides. So that's all I do after I fill up my think I add my skeins of yarn and me and my blanks into the water, and I just soaked him in there for a couple minutes. Reds like to bleed out a lot, so just keep that in mind. Try not to move them a lot because you felt that you could felt it a little bit. Um, I'm not too worried about these. Two senses are both super washed wool, so they aren't gonna felt. But I Just keep that in mind. Don't change the temperature of the water that you get. Um, thanks to felt. This is the armory. Aren't that I died. If you guys like it was, put it in a Hank or put in Skane using a knitting naughty. You could use a spliff you could use. Your arm can use the back of a chair just to take it off or take it out of the ball form and into Ah, hang See to wash it. Yeah, here's a speckled one that we died here is the base died. Couldn't see the blocks of color instead of little splotches. Here's the black teeth, starts off as purple and then works its way into a pink. And here's the other arm. Everyone, this is in ball form starts off of this very deep burgundy, and he works his way to the natural warm color. These are all very simple. Technically, go. I'll try at home with vinegar. Food coloring. Cool. A. The options are endless
7. Review: feel for speckle dying. We use our president Will. Wool yarn. We added half a cup of vinegar. We spread out regarding his exact form, picked up a little bit of dying or spoons and slowly tapped our spoon. So we've had speckles and spots on our yard, Some issues that you may run into when you're dying. Speckles is having too much dye your colors. The color that you're dying will spread throughout the whole pan or the pot, and you have more of a semi solid and speckles tow. Avoid that. Start with a small amount of yarn and then slowly increase as you progress of the other colors. Another issue that you may run into is having too much water. When you have too much water, you end up diluting the color, and you'll have more of a softer color throughout the skin instead of splotches of very good vivid colors. So that this may be this may be the look you're looking for or the look you're going for. But, um, there's just something toe Keep in mind. Speckles work best on thinner yarns or yarns with more than let's say, three plies, because the the way that die reacts to the yard. It's it's gonna pick up better on thinner yarn than it is on. Take our yard like this right here. When it's gone like this, that's more. Open it. As one ply. The diet tends to spread out more so you won't have more yuan. Have swatches. You have more of us of blocks of cover. First base time. We set up the same way we did for speckles. We put it in the pan with water to cover it and half a cup of vinegar. But we planned out our colors a little bit more, and we mixed it and interacted more of the pen and the color. Unlike for speckles, which is topped and forgot about it for this week, we added the color and then with the spoon, touched it and make sure that it was completely, um, covered and die. An issue may run into when space dying is having too much water where too much die. This is a common thing with dying yard. If we have too much water, it's going to dilute it and end up moving and mixing too much of your colors, and you might end up mixing to, like weird brown or very ugly green. That's not their. Your intentions will keep that in mind when mixing colors and space dying. So this is the skin we use. Hoover Arbor dying in ball Form Attempt for when you're whining it when you're winding the skein into a ball, make sure that your always moving the ball around so that all the garden isn't concentrated just in one area. So you're just always spending the ball. So it's more of a perfect circle, then a weird, abnormal shaped ball VR that will help you get a more uniform yarn towards the end. Two. That's a tip for the ball. Form a tip for the knitted blank. You will want to make sure your time and your intervals that you are doing when you're dying so that you can control more how the yard or how the color progresses throughout the blank. Remember these. These were the dyes I use. Dharma died dharma acid eyes. But again, you can use food coloring. You can use Kool Aid for the fix it is that you need when dying on. You could use vinegar, which is the one I use or citric acid and being more economical to buy citric acid, but it may not be as accessible as vinegar is for most people.
