1. Introduction: Welcome to the gratitude
for beginners class. My name is or modulatory, the founder of Romani talks, a media company which helps engineers and
entrepreneurs improve their communication
skills so they can articulate their ideas with
clarity and confidence. One of the facets of the Armani talks brand is
improving our creativity. Creativity is unlocking
systems thinking. And this is when we are
capable of thinking, empowering thoughts that
allow for practical use. Now, with creativity, there are certain systems that we can
use in order to build it. And one of them is gratitude. Gratitude has a profound
amount of benefits. I'm sure you've heard
of plenty of them. And if you're
watching this class, you're somewhat sold
on the benefits. The question is, how do you
go about practicing it? In this class? You're going to understand a completely different way in order to practice gratitude. So it is practical
towards your life. We're not going to
stop at theory. We're going to go
for application. You will learn the tree
method of gratitude. You will learn the
micro approach. You will learn the
importance of either verbalizing or riding
your gratitude down. And we're going to wrap up
with the final project. Does that sound good? If so, I look forward
to seeing you inside.
2. Defining Gratitude: Gratitude means to acknowledge. Allow me to give you
an example real quick. Imagine that I go to
your backyard and I dropped a whole bunch of
bricks on your backyard. Then I leave. As
I'm walking away, you're going to be like, hey, what are you doing? Why did you leave
all this junk on my backyard for when I'm like, Just wait for a second. I'm going to pick up some
cement and I'll be back. I pick up the cement. I come back and I start
to cement the bricks in a strategic manner in order
to build you a guest house. Now, your perception
is going to shift. You're gonna be like, Wow, thank you for this gift. What can I do for you in return? The bricks that represent our knowledge and
our experiences, and the cement represents us
acknowledging those bricks. Bricks alone mean very little, you could even say is just junk. But when we strategically get those breaks and we cemented in a way that allows for the
building of something new, like a guest house, or
like our confidence. That is, when we
are correctly using gratitude towards our advantage. All too often we go through a, when we have certain
experiences, we learn something new, but we never acknowledge it. So for the rest of the class, we're going to go about at different ways in order to
acknowledge our bricks.
3. Micro Gratitude Approach: We're going to start off
with what not to do. Most people who are
practicing gratitude for the first time go for
D macro approach. They sort of
acknowledge a lot of the big ones in their life. Maybe it's a recent
job promotion or getting a master's degree,
starting a business. A lot of these big
moments from their life, what starts to happen
is that over time, as they're practicing gratitude, they just keep recalling the same big wins
over and over again, which causes them to repeat the gratitude statements
sort of like a parrot. Our goal is to flip that. Rather than focusing
on the macro. First, we're going to be
focusing on the micro, the little things that
we take for granted. Now the reason
that we want to go the micro approach is
for a few reasons. Number one is that it
allows for creativity. It allows us to go into the storehouse of our
personal experiences, our external life, and force ourselves to look where
we're normally ignoring. And by doing this, we also build the ability to
be more creative. We're no longer just parroting stuff that we said
the day before. So that's one benefit. The second benefit is that if
you can be grateful for the micro to macro
becomes a byproduct. While the opposite is
not always guaranteed. If you're always just being
grateful for the macro, the big stuff,
then you'll either feel angry with the
little ones in your life. You're thinking, well,
why can it be bigger? Or you will flat-out ignore it. So by focusing on the
tiny little details, the big stuff are
automatically taken care off. So the main thing that we want to train our mind into thinking is how can I start to be grateful for the little
things in my life, the little things that I have
been overlooking all along.
4. Tree Mindset: When you see a tree,
what do you see? You see a trunk. You see
branches, you see leaves. But what don't you
see? The roots. However, without the roots, everything above the
ground will not stand. This is the mindset
that we want to understand in regards
to gratitude. We don't just want to acknowledge
the winds in our life. We also want to acknowledge
the losses in our life, which led to the web. Because without the losses, then we don't have the roots
that build our character. Allow me to share a
story real quick. Roughly around the 11th grade. I used to be obsessed
with basketball and I still play with a
couple of my friends. Those one kid, his
name was Chris. Chris was someone who wasn't
that good at basketball. But he thought he was good. He thought he was so good
that he exuded confidence. And oftentimes he
would get picked before the people who
were actually good. He had more confidence than
competent basketball players. And I used to always think, how why does it feel so
ashamed of himself for? Well, there was one time
when Chris and I were in the same exact basketball
team and we were playing and he just
kept missing shots. First shot, missed, second shot, missed. Third shot, missed. And it goes up to
six missed shots. Finally, he attempts
the seventh shot and he makes it swish.
Once it makes it. I hear a murmur in something. He's like six letter to
7676 led to the seven. Notice what he's doing. He's not just acknowledging the seven chart that
one then in his mind, the MRS weren't necessary for him to make the seventh shot. He acknowledged the roots along with everything
above the ground. So that's what we
want to do as well. With this profound
method of gratitude, we no longer just
see wins and losses. We see wins and lessons. So practice gratitude
like a tree.
5. When to Practice Gratitude: If you're still
watching this class, you are most likely
sold on gratitude. You're like, okay, I want to
implement this in my life. The question is, what am
I going to practice it? I'm already pretty
busy as it is. I believe that there's
two optimal times to practice gratitude. As you're starting off. Later on, you could do
it whenever you want. But anytime we're incorporating a new habit into our lifestyle, a certain time blocks
help tremendously. And I believe the first time, best time at least to
practice gratitude is right when you wake up. Because here's the thing. Oftentimes, when we're
over here thinking that we're going to have
a very free a day. What happens is we get pulled
in all these directions. If we're trying to incorporate a habit and we save
it for, let's say, the middle of the day
and out of nowhere or being pulled in all these
directions, we may say, Okay, how about I
practices habit tomorrow, offer tomorrow to
be the exact same. So once the habit is
completed in the morning, there's that level of enthusiasm that we feel
because we're like, Okay, I said that I
was going to pick up this habit and I already did it. Now here's the beauty. Once gratitude is
practiced in the morning, the tone for the rest of the
day feels much smoother. Small things are not
getting under our skin as much and we feel more creative and energetic
for the rest of the day. So that's one of
the best times to practice gratitude
in the morning. Another time to practice
gratitude is at night, because how we end the day in the nighttime influences
the next day. So the nighttime period, everything is winding down. You're settling in,
TV is turned off, a phone is put on silent, or you're turning on the
alarm for the next day. The perfect time to
practice gratitude. So we have morning,
we have night. And if you're really ambitious, you can do it during both times.
6. Verbal or Writing Method: Now the moment of truth. How do we exactly
practice gratitude? I mean, how do we go about
moving our bodies, our mind? How do we engage ourselves
into the activity? There's three potential ways. You could either
think the gratitude, you can either speak it or
you could write it down. Here's my suggestion. I think if you're
starting off for the first time in a
gratitude practice, what you want to do
is either speak it or write it at thinking is
a little bit more advanced. I mean, if you are
someone who has a full control of your
concentration muscle, which a lot of people don't. Unfortunately, then I recommend you either speak it or write it. So let's say you
chose in the morning, I just choose a
three micro points that you want to articulate
that you are grateful for. It could be losses which led to winds, the winds themselves. Or you could just write it down and then you
could get one of those gratitude journals and they sell it all over
the spot right now. And you could write it on Microsoft document
completely up to you. But my main recommendations is, as a beginner, is best to
either speak or write it.
7. Athlete's Attitude: I want to introduce
you to a mindset which I think will help
you out tremendously, especially when you're
practicing gratitude. This is the athletes mindset. Because when I personally
think about gratitude, I think of something
that's very ambiguous. I mean, I can understand
the importance of it. However, it's very
difficult for me to grasp. Once something is
difficult to grasp, It's easy to postpone
it at times. It's easy to be
inconsistent with it. That's why I recommend
that you adopt an athlete's mindset in regards to your
gratitude practice. Now what exactly is
an athlete's mindset? Superstar athletes, they show up even when they
don't feel like it. Their body is sore,
the feeling tired. But they understand that
they have practiced today. They're going to go about their way in being
a professional. Likewise, once you choose the time slot that you're
gonna be practicing, your gratitude, you want to
go about it as an athlete. This is a mental sport, a mental sport that will lead to an abundance
of benefits. But you got to be an athlete, not someone who just shows up
wherever they feel like it. That's a bedroom. Alright, there we are going for
super short arm.
8. Recap: We covered a lot of topics. So let me just give you
a quick little recap of all the important points of gratitude is to
acknowledge something. We have a lot of
bricks and our life, but the bricks are junk
unless we cement them together and create
something of use. In order to practice
gratitude correctly. We don't just want
to be focused on all the big stuff in our life. We want to take the
micro approach. By taking the micro approach, the big stuff
become a byproduct. As we're practicing gratitude, we want to be like a tree. We don't just want to acknowledge
the wins in our life. We want to also acknowledge the roots are losses
which led to the when. Some of the best times
to practice gratitude is right when you wake up or right before you're
about to go to sleep. Once you're practicing it, I recommend that
you start off with either speaking it out
or writing it out. And if you're someone that
can concentrate properly, then you could even
think it into existence. As you're going about
your gratitude. Practice. A, b and athlete, don't just show up
whenever you feel like it. Be disciplined and understand that this is a mental sport. A sport which will lead to an
abundance of improvements.
9. Final Project: You made it all the
way to the end. Congratulations. Now is the time for
the class project. For the following week, I want you to practice gratitude
every day of the week. Choose your time.
Choose your method of how you're going to
go about practicing it. Are you going to take it?
Are you going to write it? Are you going to speak
it completely up to you? Once a week is done. I want you to create a
report of your experience. How did you exactly feel? It was practicing
gratitude easy. Was it difficult at did you
feel any physical changes, any mental changes be as
detailed as you would like in this report and go ahead and post it in the final
project section below, I look forward to reading it. If you enjoyed this
