1. Introduction: I am daily and from Los Irina design. I'm gonna be your guide going through this class. We're gonna create a flyer postcard in in design. The best part about this class is that I'm gonna be there to help you through every step of the process. So if you get stuck on any tech, or maybe you're not sure if you're designers working or not, you can post it and I'll help you walk through it in this cause you're gonna make a flyer or postcard that you can actually be proud of and want a handout. You'll learn how to create a strategy and call the action. Understand the printer broke. Have you need to know in order to set up your file work with Johnson and design and type kit. Learn in design basics color importing images, page layout. Learn to prepare your file for the printer and avoid the most common mistakes. I'm going to guide you through this process. I've been working in the design and advertising world for 20 plus years. Everything from Indian zines print about fall in black and white copiers to international ad agencies. But what I really love to do is work with small businesses. I created this class because I often see small businesses trying to d i y their marketing materials. It ends up just wasting their money. You're misrepresenting their business or organization and then because lack of thoughtfulness or poor quality design, or sometimes it's just production and technical issues that trip you up, and it makes the pieces look amateur even if their work is amazing. I want my skill share classes to empower the i wires to become better at creating the promotional and marketing materials so they can grow and better connect with their community and customers. Who is this class for? This causes most useful for D. I Y. Entrepreneurs, business owners or marketers that sometimes have to, or maybe like to do it all for their company, organisation or business. I like to call them accidental designers. It's for those who want to represent their work in the best way possible. But maybe right now they can't afford a high end designer or they just like to learn new things or enjoy making their own marketing materials. This class will be most beneficial to those who are making a really flyer they want to put out into the world because I'll be here to answer any questions you have along the way. And I really believe making something really is the best way to learn, so let's get started.
2. Strategy Qs and your CTA [Assignment 1]: All right, let's get started. Before we dig into any design work, we're just gonna take a minute toe work on some prep questions, thes air, things that just get you thinking some brainstorming. I'm gonna work through six questions. Grab paper, pen whatever you like to write with. And don't forget your drink of choice. And let's work through these. Honestly, I doubt the average person thinks about these things when they sit down to design a flyer. But these questions are the face of any good design project, and you'll get way more out of your postcard or flyer or any other design you create. If you start with these questions first, even if you already have your brands, overall strategy and visual identity down, you still want to consider these questions. First. Question is, who who is it for? This question is super important. If you're a cop fair and you have a flyer, is it gonna be for wholesale buyers or consumers? It's gonna be your guest. Speak and say different things, depending on who you're talking to. If your flyer is four people over 50 you probably don't want to put really small type on their that they can't read or things that don't contrast very well. Um, is it for people who are really perceptive and what high end things? It's for people who would rather have cheap things. Think about who is for specifically, and see how your design will be influenced. The Pentium, who it's for. The next question is, what? What are you promoting? Okay, this is a big one, so I want you to pick one or two things. Resist the temptation to pick all the things I know it's hard. For example, if you're a dance teacher, don't cramp in your bio. Upcoming shows, classes, private lessons, studio info, booking info, all your social media, your website, your phone number, your email and a Kickstarter campaign Late on one postcard. Think of one or two things to focus on. They can always go and learn more about you and your other offerings later, you know, I mean, you'll probably have your website on there, and they'll probably go check it out. So don't feel like this has toe have everything on there. Remember, this piece for making is not a one hit wonder. This is just one piece in a series of items you create that will build up trust. So think about what you were promoting. Our next one is where Where you going to distribute this On a coffee shop. Community center, bulletin board at a crap show table in the mail are emailing it. Are you inserting it into a local paper newsletter? Are you taking it with you to your next networking event to hand out at the front desk of your office or practice? Think about where you're gonna be placing it next. We're gonna think about win. When do you need to have the flyer in your hands? People often think of this last and there's like a late rush fee to get it printed. So think about it in advance. I like to give myself, like, three weeks before I need to have it. Like I wanna have it to the printer three weeks before I need it. I don't know. It might be a long time for some people, but it always makes me feel less stressed out. Um, so figure out the date that you want to have it in your hands or distributed by and then work backwards from there to figure out when you need to send it to the printer. The next question is why this is a big one. It's complex. I feel like there two kinds of people those that love wise and love ask why which is me. You might be able to help and those that don't, um when I say think about your wife, you might be like, Oh, of course I know why I'm making this fire making it because I want this person to buy from me. But I want you get a little more deeper and a little more specific. Um, let's start with why should the person looking at this flyer care we care about our stuff? We care about it so much as hard. Sometimes I think of like, why shouldn't this outsider person care like, don't they know how awesome I am? But why shouldn't the person looking at this fire care? Why do they need this? Why is what you're giving to them with this fire special? And I like to think about why the postcard is helping someone. If it's for a class, for example, then the postcard is helping me find that class and learn something that's going to make my life better. If it's for, Ah, delicious doughnut, then is helping me discover that delicious doughnut by getting me motivated to buy that doughnut with a coupon. If it's for a show, it's so I can discover new music. So you kind of get the idea. You can also use wide a check your reasoning. Sometimes I think we get caught up and doing things just because it's like the popular marketing trend. Uh, for example, if you answered your what question with I want to promote my Facebook page, then you might ask yourself, Why do I want to do that? Are you just doing it because you feel like you're supposed to do it? Do you even poster advertise your Facebook page regularly? Do you use Facebook as a part of your overall strategy for connecting and marketing your business? And if you find you have some weak wise, then you might want to rethink why you're actually making a postcard. Or maybe you're what is a little weak and needs a little more defining members. Also, the bigger wise Why are you making this? It's not just to sell the people. It's like Teoh. There's different wise like, Are you establishing your brand? Are you building trust for people to keep you top of mind, to show often in product, to get more people following your business on YouTube to connect with your local community , to bring more people into your shop, to get more people to your shows, to help people learn there's a lot of different wise. Okay, who? Why is there a lot? So now that we're done with all this deep thinking wise, we can get to an easy one, Which is how how are you gonna make or print this fire in this class we're going to use in design and we'll discover how to get the fire printed in the next lesson. So don't stress out about that too much right now. So we're gonna take our what and why. And we're gonna mash it up into our call to action. This is a must have on our flyers or postcards. It doesn't need to scream at them like a used car salesman or anything, but we need to get them going on what action to take. People need to be guided so a few sample calls to action could be something like Go to my website to learn more. Learn how to plant your own amazing garden by going to X whatever website er email or Facebook? Um, another one could be start the new you with this coupon code. Or maybe volunteer by registering here could be simple like that. Um, for more great recipes, let's connect on Instagram andan. Of course, we have the coupon, which everyone loves use this coupon code to get 20% off in my Etsy shop. Um oh, and coupon codes are great, by the way, because they allow you to track your postcard. So if you do have a product, um, or even a service and people buy from you online or you could just they bring this postcard and you see that sometimes bring this postcard or flyer and for X person off, um, that'll help you like, See if your postcards even working sometimes print materials. It's not like online where we know whatever persons doing. All right. So I think you have an idea of what we're trying to get out just a little deeper thinking on your project to make its strategic and make it work for you. Your assignment is going to be to go to your project and share with us. Your who? What, Where, When? Why, How? And see ta or just setia ideas and let me know if you have any questions.
3. Choosing How to Print Your Flyer/Postcard [Assignment 2]: Okay, let's talk through. Choosing your printer. We're going to go through three basic options. The 1st 1 is choosing a local printer. If you are really into supporting local businesses, this is a great option. You can get some face to face interaction, which is also nice, and they're usually you can find ones. I have really good customer service, and they'll even, like, sit down with you and go through the different paper options. Or if you have any special kind of printing that you wanted to dio for some of you, this might be like a little over your head like, um, But if you want to do something like letter press or things like that can be nice, the cons are sometimes these places air older and they might be a little bit behind the times on some of the technology. Um, depending on who you're talking to, the sales people aren't as knowledgeable as the people actually printing the pieces. So if you have any issues come up, it can be depending on the place. Of course, uh, you might need a little more lead time, depending on how busy this local printer is and if you think it's gonna cost too much because sometimes that's why people don't go local is because they confined cheaper printing. You might just want to check with them sometimes. You know, maybe if you just put a mention of them or put their logo on your flyer, they might give you a discount. Or maybe they even give it to you for free, depending on what you're doing. It never hurts to ask. Um, I should say with the local printer to that, you probably have to have a higher run, like be printing more than you know 100. But always check if you have the time. Andi, The next option, the one I use the most, honestly, is online printing. The pros are, it's usually cheaper. There are a lot of options out there if you're gonna be mailing the postcard to their even options, little mail for you, even if you're doing I think my left. I think he didn't only 100 and they found someone who would mail them all. Which is pretty nice on the coms are is you get what you pay for, So if you're going to use the online printer just because they're cheap, Then don't be bummed if your colors are kind of weird or if things were cut kind of offer crooked. That's happened to a dance teacher. I was helping out and the Flyers came back and they kind of some weird cut white space on there. But, you know, they were dirt cheap, so you get what you pay for and the customer service might be terrible. Just to warn you, I always recommend moo cards dot com because I've always had a really great quality printed with them. They have lots of options. If you give yourself enough time, they'll send you paper samples and printing samples you can look through. And I really like them. Um, the last option is to print your postcard or flyer at home or work or like a copy shop type of place to print. Um, I think you try and avoid this if you can, because you have to set up your files really different, um, to do something like this, and if you're doing it from home, then you have to cut everything out yourself or at work. So the pros are You can do it last minute. Like, literally. You could do it like an hour before you have to get to your show. You could cut up some flyers. Uh, you can make super last minute adjustments if you save his money. I don't I think so. It depends on how expensive your ink is. I mean, if you're doing it at work, maybe you don't care about saving money as much. Um, but some inks, especially the inkjet printers, can get really expensive, so it might just be cheaper to print online. Um, the pro two is if you're doing, you know, less than I don't know 50. You could do it at home. Um, the cons, ours. You have to cut it out yourself. So you need some kind of cutting board or Exacto knife. Things like that. The cons and the cons as well is that you could make last minute adjustments. So it's nice to be able to make last minute adjustments, but it's also a pain in the book. Um, bleeds get a little trickier to set up. Ah, bleed is when you're printing all the way to the edge. And not all printers at home or work are going to print all the way to the edge. I'll show you what I'm talking about here. So again, I would only do if it's gonna be a small amount, like less than 50. And you're feeling pretty arts and crafty, and you wanna cut out some stuff? Uh, if you are going to do it that way, I would suggest setting an up standard size like a plane. Only 8.5 by 11 letter size or some kind of size. It doesn't require bunch of cutting. And on this example, what I mean by bleed is I would set it up so it doesn't go all the way to the edge. So the pretend the light green is a 8.5 by 11 and the dark green would be our artwork and so create this border. And then the white dotted line is where we would cut. So in this case, you would just have to cut it once, right? Exactly. The middle. And you could do this with a cutting board, really easily
4. Finding Online Printer Specs/Sizes: in the last lesson you chose which way you were going to be printing your postcard or flyer , and I'm gonna assume that most of you are probably going to do it online. So I wanted to show you how we figure out what our size is going to be and talk about different printer specs and vocabulary. So I want to show you three different ones, and I'm gonna walk through the use it real time because it could be a little tricky sometimes to figure out where to get this information, depending on how the site set up. So let's go through moo cards first way. So we'll go to the products will see that postcard. They have the postcard a little separate that flyers here. Let's say we want 1/2 page flyer and then see where our sizes scroll down. Um oh, here we go. Here's pricing and design guidelines kind of hate it a little bit. And Lou Cards is nice because they already haven't in design templates set up for you. So you will just click on that and open it up. So that's produced, um, at the moment, though we just need Teoh pay attention when you're first starting. Like to see what size. Once you decide what you want you want. Make sure your set it up with the right size. So when you go to send it to the printer, you don't have any surprises. And so we know that we're gonna do 5.5 by 8.5. Pretty standard. Let's look at what their postcards look like. Postcards, original post cards. Let's scroll down here. Choose your postcard size C could. Sometimes it's like the size is a little tricky. This one's 4.13 by 5.83 All right, so choose that one. Let's see if they have the same set up where they're gonna help us. Here. You can choose your paper stock. Moo cards is really nice, like they're set up really nice. You can get samples from them to I think I mentioned that before so you can order some samples and then you can actually touch the paper and see what it feels like. So they have it set up the same. Here's the design guidelines, and so the number you want to pay attention to is trim that's where, and I give you a nice description. This is where I like that. They say we aim to cut your car just because they know it can be a little off sometimes. So that's, uh, where these little it's hard to see him on here, those little crop marks and then the safe area is a dotted line, and that's where you don't want any text going out of it. And the bleed area is if you have images running all the way to the edge of the trim, you have to include bleed. Like I said that they're pretty nice because they give us, Let's just check it out. So downloading their template, you can't see that I'm over here on my other monitor, opening it up. It's a dot idea l file. This is mu cards template that they have set up for you, and they show us they have a nice little template. They even give us some of this information that will need at the end. Tell us the trim area, all this good stuff, so and if you click on layers you can see here's where you would have this they call artwork guidelines there. Template layers on there. And then you could design on this layer. Okay, let's go to another one and see how they haven't set up. Because, like I said, all of them are different, and they some of whom make it really confusing. So if we go to you printing, I'm looking at the rat card area right now. And here's the different sizes, so we can just see, like, Okay, I don't want I want to get this 3.5 a day and 1/2 size paper. Glossy card stock is thicker paper, probably for all any type of rat cards you're gonna want that you ve is good if you're gonna be displaying these outside like an outside rat car because then your colors won't fade. Gloss, obviously glossy. Matt is Matt. So let's scroll down and see where they have. There's okay. Maybe under paper specs. Oh, this is nice. They tell you like they actually like, describe it in here. This is not what we're looking for, but kind of nice to get a description of all the different kinds of paper. Let's see a template. All right, so they do not have an in design template. This'd is how it happens a lot so you could. But with in design, it's awesome because you can import anything. I would say you want to grab either the after bad or we want to grab the illustrator file because we can import either of those. So I'm just going to grab that 3.5 by 8.5, and it's downloading to my other screen. So this is the U printings template. We downloaded the pdf, and what I would do for this one is just place it into in design on its own separate layer for reference, and I'll show you how to do that. In the sample project that we walk through. They have all of the same trim, safety bleed specks that you need to know. And then it also this one also tells you, like if you want a border around your entire card, then you need to make it at least three eights. Want to show you guys one more online printer just because I want you to know that sometimes if you're looking for a specs and you can't find them or sizes is confusing that it's not necessarily you. Sometimes they kind of hide it a little bit. It's not too easy to find. Uh, that's why I think I also like moo cards. They make it really easy. Eso if we got a Mr Print in here is like all the products, but like, we'll see if marketing materials and then there rack cards they have postcard postcard mailing service. So this different will mail. You're postcards for you, which is pretty awesome. If you have a list and they'll do it, you don't need that many, which was also nice. Um, what? Their stuff can be a little confusing. So let's click on flyers and everything looks see. Okay, let's say we want you know, this 4.2 by 5.5 inch flyer sounds good to us, but when we click on, it doesn't actually tell us anything. OK, so here's where they have theirs right here. We click on that and then in product specs. Okay, so the 2.5 by four inch so they don't have a template for us to download, but we can do it in in design, So write down these numbers so that you have them And then I'll show you how we would set this up in design since we don't have a specific template to go by. So let's jump over into in design. We're gonna take the specs that we just got from Bisa print, and we're going to plug those into in design. We're gonna make a new document, new documents, and I'm gonna work in INGE's because I am in the US They gave us millimeter sizes, too. If you feel more comfortable with that, you can use that. And we saw the trim size was 2.5 by four. So that's how I am going to set this with and hype 2.5 by four. And now I need to set the bleed sides they give us our bleed. Size was 2.75 by four point to five, so we have to do a little bit of math. 2.75 minus 2.5 is 0.25 or 1/4 of an inch, but we need that total, so we have to divide that by two, and then we get 20.1 to 5 an eighth of an inch so in here, I'm going to say 0.1 to 5 and it's all the way around. 0.1 to 5, because again, the height 4.25 was the bleed. Size minus four inches. You get 25 again and divided by 2.1258 Mitch. So when I hit, create. Now this is our bleed. So if I have a bar, set it up so you can actually see the color. Okay, So if I have a bar that comes across to the edge, this is my trim right here. The white space. I need to pull it all the way over. So that is bleeding all the way to this. Believe edge. And that's how you set up a bleed in in design. This right here is just the margin. So don't pay attention that you can change that up in here later for margins. And typically it's probably also 0.1 to 5. Um, the safety area, even though they didn't tell us that, So I would go ahead and put my margin at 0.1 to 5 all the way around. Click this. All right, so now we're we're all set Now that you've had a chance to explore printing options, I want you to go to your project of share with me how and where you're going to print and let me know also what size you plan on making your flyer or postcard.
5. Create a Rough Draft [Assignment 3]: All right, so we have our basic size from the printer. We have our who. What, Where? Why, when how questions answered and we know what r c t a is. We're gonna take that info to sketch out some rough drafts. Don't panic if you don't consider yourself an artist. This is not about being perfect is about generating ideas. I want you to do these rough drops before you even open in design, because so many of us freeze up in front of a screen. It's like we get writer's block, Um, and it makes us feel like we have to do everything perfectly so loose Sketching is a good way to warm up your creative muscles. So with your size questions and CTS in mind, here's what I want you to do. First, I want you to sketch out five bad layouts. And why do I say bad? Because giving yourself permission to do five badly outs is so much easier than telling yourself that you need to create one perfect layout and it's a good way to loosen up and just start doing the things it will all come to you once you start sketching it up. So do five badly outs and you'll end up doing more. Once you probably get into it, choose a favorite and keep it on hand, cause you're gonna use it when you start giving into in design. You can also use it to help you figure out what you need to gather as far as I copy images , logos, maybe just some basic information. Like what time something starts. Maybe you're not sure you need to call someone and use this sketch to help you figure those things out. And then remember, this is not your final design. You can always change it. You can always try more than one. Want to get into in design if you have time to mess around with it. It's just our guide for now, and you'll see how rough it is because here's mine right here. It's just a really quick I knew that we were gonna print toe why, I'd like, uh, I think it was like seven by five or something like that. So he just could be used as a rough size and, you know, if you know you're gonna be printing square than you obviously would draw square If you know, you're gonna have a vertical, you would drop vertical and you can kind of see how everything's gonna fit. I knew we needed to use logo. This is for a real estate, uh, property just showing people like, Hey, this new property is for sale and sending it Teoh people in the neighborhood in case they know somebody. So, you know, lots of big, gorgeous pictures. New. We need to showcase a bunch of them. Of course. A call to action with the listing info and contact. Um, I knew that the owner want a photo of himself on there. I knew it was gonna be a mailer, so I had Teoh kind of think about the space and how we're gonna work around the mailing space. So it's It's really simple. Don't make it Teoh. Complicated. And for your assignment, I'd love for you to go to your project after you complete your sketches. And you can share as many as you want on share the one that you feel like you're gonna go with and let me know if you have any questions.
6. File Setup + Organizing: I want you to organize your files because you'll think me later. Once you really start creating more and more pieces, it's a good practice to get into So it make sure the name your folder something specific and put it someplace that makes sense. So don't name it postcard and put it under desktop. Name it something relevant to what you're doing and put it in the Documents folder. You might even put it inside of a marketing folder. Or, once you have a ton of stuff, you know, you might end up having a Postcards folder all of its own, inside that marketing folder and then broken down. So just do something that makes sense for now on something that's easy to search inside that folder. Here's a basic set up that I used. You'll have your funds. Don't worry. If you have no idea what funds to use, we'll go over that in the later lesson. You have an images folder. Some people call this link. Some people call it art. You name it whatever you want. Um, make sure that any images you put in here are high rez. 300 p p. I at least will go over this more when we're getting to enders in design in the next listen , um, logo's are best for printing its illustrator pdf GPS. But as long as it's high reds, it'll work. Get into some of that other stuff in the next lesson. Copy. You really only need this folder if you're working with someone else who is providing copy for you because you can just cut and paste copy into in design. Uh, template. This is where we'll put the template that we get from our printer with printer specs, and we have brand guidelines. You might not have the solder, but if your business does have some kind of style guide, then you can put it in here. If you want a reference it, or if it lives on your computer somewhere or up in the cloud somewhere, that's fine, too. You can reference it that way. And then, of course, here's our in design filed again. It's named something very specific, and I put the size of the postcard on it because if I'm looking, if I start making more and more and I have different sizes, I want to have the size and It's easy. Fine. So that's all for this one. And then the next one, we're gonna actually start setting up in in design.
7. InDesign Basics - Color: Now we're getting to let my favorite parts of design, which is doing color palettes and choosing colors, working with color again. If your business has already established their color palette, you don't need to worry about this cause you'll just be using brand colors. But if you don't know what you're doing, and maybe choosing the color palette stresses you out, there's this really quick way to do it. And it's awesome because it never used to be in in design. They added it in the past couple years, I think, and I really like it's fun to play with. So choose a couple of images that you really like the colors in and import them into in design, and then you'll take this eyedropper tool. Here. We'll take this eyedropper tool, and if you press and hold and you'll come over here to color theme tool so you that's the one you want. And then when you click on an image, it can't. It selects the different colors in that image for you, and it creates a move like this is a nice, beautiful spring palette that you can't. There's even more like if you want a darker one or deeper colored one. It's really nice. And if you want to tie in your images with the copy and everything in your post Carter Flyer, this is a nice way to do it. Or you can just get some ideas for developing your color palette. So and if I were Teoh, click on this image. Then I get a whole other set of Mrs Nice. Um, like I said, the dark, deep, muted look commuted. So if I do like these colors and I decide I want to add them to my swatches palette over here, I just click that. Or if I decided, I wanted to add it to my adobe creative cloud libraries than it will come into here. So again, go here, make sure it's not the regular eyedropper. It has to be the color theme tool, click like that one, and then you just add it to your library and you can change these names if you want. That's fine. If you don't like having all of these, just go to you can just delete them. Just click, hold shift, click again trash, and then you can get some stuff out of your way if you want your workspace to be a little bit better, Um, let's talk about making colors. Say I do have a brand guideline and I know that I need it to be 50%. It tells me, 50% scion, 20% magenta. Go over here, draw little box. You don't have to do that, but I like to look at it Click color, so sometimes it will have to click here seem like a what? I say 50% scion, 20% magenta Go. I like to pop this out sometimes if I'm making colors and then you can just add that and then I could go in and make other ones if I knew the other color was certain value. This again is if I have some brand, uh, brand guidelines that I'm going off for my business and the colors are always the same again. Just click this ad on If you ever lose your palates over here, color is in the window and color and you have a color swatches. Those were the ones you'll use the most. 8. InDesign Basics - Typekit & working with type: Let's play with some fonts. If your business has a style guy, then you just follow that and you don't really have to mess around too much. Do anything. So I just typed these all in, so I can show you some tricks. Um, up here on the top, you have your character and your paragraph controls, and we'll also have them. If you can't find them, they're over here. Don't worry about it. Has the same same stuff. So don't worry about having to do it in two different places. It's just however you end up setting up your work area, you can also go into a window. And if you scroll down, there's type and here's the character or command T. Here's paragraph command, Shifty or sorry, command option T. Here we go. So if you highlight this, here's where we actually change the fonts. I'm gonna use up here just because it's a little easier. Wrong. According Andi, here's different phones. So one thing I want to show you his type kit type kits fairly new, but it's nice you if you already bought Adobe in design and the adobe creative cloud you also have access to type kit have some really nice fonts to use. So here's how we activate those. So this little thing right here I can toggle on office shows you these air the ones that's filtering to show only type kit. And if I click off of it, interest all the funds that I have installed on my computer as well, again and again, just talking on and off. So if I want to add some funds from type kit, you will go over here where I am and you just click this advance from type Kip and it will take you to type kids online interface. You may need to sign in. I'm already signed in, uh, to your adobe creative cloud using that passport. So here we are. Here's type kit. Make sure that here, if you want free funds So where fonts included with your in design subscription, make sure you're on my library here. Marketplace is awesome, too, but these funds will be paid, and you can see I think if we click on this one over here, it shows it's, uh, $40 which isn't bad. But if you're on a budget stick with the ones in my library. They give you lots of waste of, um so you can look this way if you type in here. We know our word is entrepreneur so that we could type that in. And now we get a preview of what it looks like, which makes a little easier. We know the word we're selecting over here on the right. They also have it. So you can if you know you want a particular look. If you want Sand Saref, that means fonts that don't have these. Well, guys, slab Sarah. Anyway, just go in and play yourself. Um, it's pretty fun. Might end up taking way too way longer than you need to if you're like me because you want to look at all of them. Um but you can also I like this part. It's probably good for people who are just starting off using in design. You can search or filter the font by what looks better for paragraphs versus and I have this what looks better for paragraphs or what looks better for header because you wouldn't want a whole paragraph of this or whole paragraph of this would be kind of hard to read so I like that they've included that. And then down here is just some more. So let's say we decide that we want we want this front. So you're gonna click? I'm here. Oh, and as you're going through, if you like certain ones, you can add a little heart and then I will save it and your favorite. So that's kind nice if you want to browse and click ones you like and then go into the favorites and decide from there So we're we're going, man. Let's say we go with this one. And so this one. Now that's interesting. And I know they did that. So someone off, uh, variations. This one here and this one here cost money. But you can get this one for free. So all of your news, click sink and then the font, we'll sink up over here. You might get a little notification on your desktop that says the font was added. And if you remember the name, it was Karina. So we'll click over here And then again, it's easier for me because I have a lot of fonts on here. Teoh, just show type Kit Fonds. And here is our font, Karina. The other cool thing that they've started doing now is if there's fonts that use a lot, you can add like a little star by them or ones that you like, and then you could filter like Oh, I just want to see my favorites. All right, so we have our new font, and then you can. I can't remember what the number is. You can only do it up to us like a certain amount of fonts. So let's go on, and you just have to deactivate them. So let's go back up here fonts from type kit. And if I click over here, I can see my sink fonts. It will show me all of them. You get 100 That's a lot. That's a lot more than I was thinking. Um, so if I want to, I can a NSYNC thes, and then we'll take him away so I can add them and then a NSYNC them. That 100 is a lot. I don't think you'll need more than that ever for this postcard. We only want to use a couple, and if you do end up getting your brand together, you'll only have like a handful that will even use so so here. I'll just show you real quick where to change size on some basic things. Here we can change our size. Here's where we change the space, the line space. It's called leading, but I know a lot of you, and you have used other programs and they might call it like line space. Here is Teoh All caps variations. This is space between individual letters so you can click and adjust. The current ing is what it's called click and adjusted like this some months you need to do that, Teoh, because certain characters are too far apart. But I don't know how much you'll gettinto. Here is the tracking, just like how far apart everything is in general. This is like squishing the font. I don't want you to do this. Just say no, the amateur move. So don't do that. Here's where you can change the color of the phone. Oh, and I'll show you one. So over here say you have a selected and you can also change color just in the color palette on the swatches. But make sure that it's if we're selected. Sorry, this way with the selection tool. And I select this box, the whole thing. Make sure you can. You can change the color of the whole box. But I want you to make sure if you're trying to change the font color and you're like why is the font color not changing? Because you need to click on this little T, and then you can change the font like all of the fun colors in this textbook. If you just want to change one, though, then you need to be selected with the type tool, and then you could do it this way. Oh, see, what else would you like to know? Paragraph, um, styling over here, like alignment again. There's a pair of trouble you can you or you can use the paragraph up here, whichever one you want. You can adjust Spacey in this way, too, where it's the spacing in between the paragraphs. Or you can, um, like, make an indent things like that, like if you're doing paragraphs, probably won't be writing too many paragraphs on postcard, But just say, you know, I think that's pretty much it you all that you need to get started Oh, I wanted to show you one other place that you couldn't get free ish, cheap ish fonts. It's called the font dot com, so this is a site where you can get free things. Some of them aren't a super great, but some of them are kind of fun, like this one here. So for this, you'll click download, and then you have to install live. You have to go through the steps to install the fund so you would click on download downloads to your computer when you open end up. And if you're on a Mac, you congest. Use the Mac devote by double clicking on it will install the phone for you. Or you can use a phone management program if you have one on your computer, so pay tend to know over here some of these are free for personal use, and some of them are. Let's see some of them. How miss If I can find one free for personal use, I don't think you can filter this way, which would be super helpful if you could. UM oh, like this one. This one's 100% free, so if you're using it for business. This one's donation where? Um, donation. So I mean, if you are using it for your business, it's best if you, you know, can give a little donation to the people who take the time to design these phones on. There's other places online you can look, but this is one that I just feel like It's easy to see. They do have organized a little bit by themes he used to have a more I haven't used it. Listen a while. Oops. Yeah, So themes is here. And then you could search like if you No, you want something comic? These funds can get a little cheesy pretty fast, but dependent on your project. That's I mean, you might want that on when I'm doing, like lots of vintage designs. Stuff like something like this would be pretty fun. And I could see using that for something. It so happened. 9. InDesign Basics - Images: No. I'm gonna walk you through how to import images into your in design pile. So we're going Teoh, come up here and we're gonna click file is actually not called important. It's called placed. So we're going to scroll down here to place or command. E is what I like place. Gonna grab an image, grab this kitchen and image my head open and I click and drag to place it. Or I could just click once and a little places. Now, I want you to do something super important. This is what most people would say. This is Ah, One of the biggest mistakes I see happen all the time. You want to go to links? It might also be up in here if you don't see it in your sidebar. It's right here. The links palette. It's also command shift the So it's kind of the same as importing, which was Command E. And yours might look like this where this is all you see is the name on what page it's on. What if you click this little Shaikh? Uh, this little toggle right here where it says show hide and phone. Now we get to see a bunch of a bunch of different things and what I want you to pay attention to hear right now is this number where it says effective PP I. Because most printers are gonna want your image to be 300 right now it's a little low. So I know that this image is low. It doesn't mean like it's a bad image. It just means that it's a little too a little too small to use it this size. And sometimes printers will flag this and they won't print a list. Loves you haven't 300 so and sometimes they won't depends on where your print came from. Sometimes they won't. And then, if your image turns out poor like, well, that's your fault, because you didn't have it set up properly anyway. Eso you can click on, click on the image and hold command shift while you have this black arrow tool and proportionately it'll keep it together. Shrink it down, and now you'll notice that this number has changed so I could make it a little bigger. And I can just see like, oh, helping Kim So right there is 31 So that's as big as this image can get. Stay. You have places image, and you want to replace it with another image. Unease. E way to do that is, if you're in here, you can select this little link on. Then we can pick different image. See, Where did I put my images? So yes, Skill share flyer links this loan and then I don't replace it with a different image. So that's pretty easy. You can also place tons of different kinds of things you can import. You Canadian import in design documents. If you really ever wanted, you can import Pdf so you can import E p s. You can import illustrator files. One thing I want to show you importing an illustrator file. So I'm gonna click man be I'm gonna grab This is the logo, and I want you to see some of you might have this show options, but checked some of you might not. So if you don't have it checked, I want you to check it. And then when we hit open is going to give us these options. And let's de select this because he I This happens every once in a while. The people, and it's really they don't know what's going on and they get frustrated and freak out. So say you import your image and here, like why? First of all your first freak out might be, Why is my logo look horrible? It is all grainy. It's not supposed to be like that. And then you to say, I hate in design. I want this anymore. So if you click on this image, it's just the way it's displaying for some reason. And then if you hit control, click, go down to display performance and hit high quality. Now there is your beautiful logo. But then you might think, Oh, but it's supposed to have a white. They're supposed be no background, I suppose, to be transparent. Why is this? Have a white background? You might think, Oh, it's in my colors. But then you see it says none. Why is it doing this? This is a little frustrating, especially if you've never come across that before. It will drive you mad, but just go back in here, and it's because when we imported it, you have to have the show import options, because when we imported it for some reason this was clicked off, so then it wanted to make a white background. So if you have any issues of their images, try re importing them and choose the show options. So I I know I wanted to have a transparent background because also change where it's cropped. So right now it's cropping to the art, but I couldn't do it. The actual file is that big, so you can choose that Tuesday's. Sometimes someone might have set something on a 8.5 by 11 page, and you don't need the whole entire 8.5 by 11 page. You can tell it, I just want the art. So now we can have her image here. And then when I click and drag, that's how it's supposed Teoh supposed to be again. If it really bothers me, I can control click scroll down display performance, high quality and now we are all set. One other thing I want to show you. If you don't want to keep you know, selecting on each thing and looking high quality, you can control, click and go to display performance and then click high quality, and that will make everything see how that image adjusted. This might slow down your computer, depending on how fast your computer runs. So if you're having performance issues, you might want to turn it back onto just typical display. Again, it's control. Click like off to the side if you click fast display. It's really, really fast and not that hopeful, so you probably don't want to do that. So for the postcard, it's probably find a have it just set high quality. You can also do that up here in view. Display performance is where that would be all right, and I think that's pretty much it for how to import images.
10. Common Mistakes and Assignment [Assignment 4]: all right, Before you get started on your project, I wanna talk to you about some common stake so you can keep him in mind. As you're working through the 1st 1 I should you had a check for this in the last. When we're talking about links and importing images, you can also just print it out and look at it and see. But it looks like because you can force the resolution up in a program like photo Shop. And so your image might say in the league palette, it might say that it's the right resolution, but it's the quality of the photo isn't good. It just isn't good. And so I always recommend printing it out to check what they look like. And numbers are always an indicator of a good photo, uh, talked about this a lot, trying to cram too much info in and not enough white space. If you are new to design, especially recommend to keep it simple, and you can make something look really nice and clean and simple. If you have more experience with design, you can. But it turns into a hot mess really fast when you're trying to cram so much stuff in is the difference between being a maximalist interior designer and that my friends Mom's house. It's just piled with VHS movies and close busting out of all the closets. They both have a lot of stuff in them, but one looks awesome, and one that's not no call to action on your flyer or postcard. Remember to get that call to action in there type running over images with not high enough contrast. So you don't want something that's like black type on top of like a dark blue water background, something that you can add drop shadows. But those look cheesy and dated and can be done really poorly. They can't be done. Well, just make it sure that your they're very subtle or try shifting things around or different colors. Um, to get it to work. You don't have Teoh really Try hard to make a good design fit, uh, people putting their type too close to the edge of things. Remember to give breathing room and space kind of goes back to the non off white space. Also, you don't have to use just because they say, Oh, we need eight inch safety zone doesn't mean that you should use that as your margin. This happens all the time, I think, because we've become so digital. People see it on screen and think, Oh, this types not big enough. But when you print it out, it actually looks big. And if you make it big, bigger toe look good on screen when you print it out. Sometimes it looks really horsey and big and just clunky and awkward, so make sure to print out your proof to view it, and you'll also catch different things. I always noticed that when I print stepped out, I catch typos more. I'm not sure what which brings us to the next thing. Well, the most common mistakes and I am so guilty of this myself is not spending enough time on copy or proof reading. I get so wrapped up in the design that I forget how important copy is, and I've been trying lately to make myself right like 10 headlines, and that's probably not even enough. But at least is not the first thing. I think so, and always proof, read and spell check and all that good stuff. Have somebody else look at it for you is always a good idea. Okay? You should have everything you need to get started on your project and in design. I've recommend watching the next video. It's a walk through of real time working on in design postcard project just to give you an idea. And I think I have a few tips in there that you might find useful. And then once you have your design going, posted a picture, a work in progress, picture of spine, post your final picture and level to see both of them and let me know if you have any questions.
11. Project Walkthrough - Postcard Design: All right, let's start putting everything together. I'm gonna walk you through a project so you can really see how it works. I'm going to take my sketch, my awesome sketch that I created. Oh, and if you don't know how to do that, you just push a space bar. If you're on a Mac own off, works on PC and you just push it and it'll pop up. So this is what we're going to be creating this one here and this one here first thing and nine do is get my specs from the printer and those are here. So here's my size. It's gonna be Here's my I'm doing a horizontal Enzo's 8.52 by 5.47 And then here's my bleed size. And then we need to do some math saying before to figure out the bleeds because we don't hype in the bleed size into in design, we type in the bleed border size. So we're getting a 8.5 to minus. Wait, no. So we're going to bleed size 8.64 my ass. 8.52 and we get points 12 and then we want to divide that I to 0.6 is our pleads. I have inches and you can work in millimeters to if you prefer. Sometimes I like to If the math is getting too crazy with the inches working in millimeters kind, help sometimes prevent that on. For the height, we're gonna take the lead. Size 5.59 5.59 minus 5.47 That same awesome and point No. Six all the way around. It's usually all the way around for something like this. The only time it's different from the hype and the width is in magazine. And a lot of times you might have a different different bleed size. Okay, so we're gonna take that info, and we're gonna open up in design. These guys go away, I'm gonna create a new document. You could do that by either command in where you can go up to file, if you like file and new new documents. I'm so used to using key commands that's curling up to the top. It was hard for me. All right, so here, I'm gonna choose inches. I'm going to do my 8.52 and my height, 5.47 come down here. And then we wrote up lead down. It was 0.6 all the way around and my margin I'm going. Teoh right here is hiding, and I'm gonna put that as point 0.1 to 5 with is an eighth of an inch. If you click this guy, it'll just set it up for all of them. Great. And they gotta grab it from my other window here. Three. Okay, so I want you to come over two pages. You'll find pages, palette any time. If you don't have any of these views like, I just have my desktop arranged, and by my workspace right now, I just have only Central's. But if you notice the one of these pallets is missing, you can always tell up to window and scroll down, and it should be in there somewhere. So here's pages. If you don't have it right here, I'm going to set this up. We're gonna do two pages, and I'm going to hit command option p for a second and take away this facing pages. And at another page, just click on that, um, or when you're in that command Option P. You can change it here if you want lots of different ways to do the same thing. All right, so let's go back to page one. You could see which paid were on here one or two. You can also see it down here. Page one or two. We're gonna be on page one, and I'm going to zoom out. I'm gonna hold my option command space bar, and you should get a little air are a little magnifying glass. I was gonna zoom out a little or you can hold command and the minus key or the plus key does the same thing. It zooms in and out. I'm going to import or place. Um, my sketch. Just so you guys can see what we're doing. Um, here's my sketch. If I want Teoh, hide everything like my guides, that's also in view guides. Probably gonna do key commands, though. That's just how it's working. And the if I want to hide like this border that showing up all the way around defending years might or might not gonna go into view and extra was a hide frame edges because I don't like seeing those when it's not on. All right. So right here we have If I click on V, appear gives me my black arrow tool. And again, I could just hold command and shift to make this bigger. And I just want it over here for reference. It might look a little off and fuzzy, and that's because we're just it the display option. And I've put talked about this during the importing images class that you can hold control , display, performance, high quality, and then it's a little clear. So once we have our file, first thing I want you to do is save, So you will go into file, save and choose wherever I already have one here, and you're just gonna issued all it should be said you want it is a document, and I'm just going to Since I already have a file there, I'm gonna name it, test to say you can see save, and then you're ready to go in design. If it crashes on you, it will. A usually, um, saves is there going along little bit, But you might just want a hit command. Get in the habit of hitting command s That's every time like you get a little stopping point because I don't want you to lose your stuff. Like I said, it does a pretty good job file recovery, just in case. Always see, I need to import some images and no, I need to grab my hit command d going to go to my links or your images folder or whatever you're calling it. And I need to grab my main one again. This is I'm just gonna push the space bar. Makes it really easy for me to look through and see which image is the main one. So here's this exterior image that I'm gonna use and I'm gonna open. Not and that's fine. I was gonna click here and drag and by dragging its totally fine it works. It is what I mean by it works. It doesn't, uh, skew your image or anything. It keeps the proportions. It's not going to stretch it. I know. I want that image. And then I want a picture of the kitchen and I want a picture of the bedroom and the living room. And also he had Black man D to import. So I want this. Let's see above the kitchen one. I'm just pushing the space bar again to pop big and then pop it back down. And I want this one. I would not want that one and this one. So what you can do is you can hold shift. I'm gonna click off this because I don't need to see the import options for these. You can hold shift. At least this is how you do it on a Mac hold shift. And then I can set open, and it'll import all of them. So I don't have to keep going back there so I can click this. Yeah, this and this one. All right. That looks good. So one trick I like to do, I'm looking at this and I see that I want to set them up all the way. Put these over the side zoom and over here using command space bar to men come in a drop box here, and I'm gonna take order off so it doesn't interfere with spacing. I'm gonna dio So I have in this box and I know that I want three images set up, so I'm gonna come up over here, and I'm going to divide Oh, wait, not the with when divided the heights by three. And then I'm gonna make it a little smaller because I know that I'm gonna want some room there. And now I'm going to hold my option. And then you see how the arrow changes that's gonna let me duplicate. I'm gonna hold option and we will hold shift, and it keeps it all lined up. And then I'm gonna hold option and shift again. So now I have is it images? Are these boxes that I can put the images in Since I there's an another tool that is handed used, It's the alignment palette, and they're up here too. But I'm gonna show you where the palate is if you got a window and then in object and layout a line the overall My other screen Here we are. And I know that I want this space right here in between each of these boxes to be the same . It kind of looks the same. I just want make sure it is so I'm going to use my alignment palette. I'm going to tell it right here. A line to I wanted Teoh align to the selection which means what I have selected these boxes and then I'm just gonna click this distribute vertical space. He was a tiny bit up, so I'm gonna line that. And now I could reimport the images this way. So let's say command be and then I put the kitchen image in there, so this is good to talk about. So I just important image. It filled up the whole empire space. And you're probably wondering, how do I get this kitchen image smaller? This is where this white arrow tool comes in handy, that direct selection tool. So click on that and you'll notice a little hand pops up and the hand is selecting this image. We might need to zoom out a little, so I'm gonna command subtract r minus. You see how big that image is? So I could select that and then hold down the shift key Teoh make it smaller. But my favorite way and trick to do this is to stay selected on the Black Arrow tool, This one up here, a selection tool click on that and then I'm just gonna hit command option shift e and that proportionately will shrink it down. Tips man. Zero Gonna use that a lot that goes back out my hand just pressing the space bar that is going to proportionately shrink it down all the way. So let me do that again. So here it is. Giant like eso big. I am just going to hit command option shift e to shrink it back. That was also up here in fitting. If you go to object, scroll down a fitting and you can hit fit, content proportionately. And then we can adjust it from there. Second click on it here and make it a little bigger to fill the frame. However, I like it again. I'm on the white era selection tool and then another way that we can get our image over here. If I already have these, I can click on this with my, um, white arrow selection. I could say cut, which is Command X, or you can do it manually up here and edit that. I'm gonna click on this three bucks and then I am going to say paste into which is also command Option B. And now it's in the blue box. And then if I want it to fill the blue box. Then I'll do my band option should be to fill it and then again picking the white tool end of making it thinker slighting over same way that this paste it into. So that's a special paste. It's not the regular paste it's paste into. Remember that? Okay, so now that we have our images place, I'm not gonna worry about giving that super perfect. Um, at this point, I'm just gonna get these elements. And next, I'm going to import, uh, the logo here and then I am going Teoh work on some type has over here I have the listing info and contact and website. So this particular client already has a style guide for me to use, so it makes it really easy. Here's the style guide. It shows me which colors, and it shows me at what the type which funds to use so is pretty easy. I don't have to spend a lot of time like picking things out, and they already have the copy for me, and he wants it to say new list een And you wanted to say that address, so I'm gonna, uh um, put this in here. Copy the text. I'm going Teoh pace without formatting because I want to show you how to format it. So I'm gonna take this and using the style guide my other screen. You can't see it. I know that I need to use in this roboto font Do Don't click this. Choose this old one. So I have to have all selected very important get type. And, um, I'm gonna use up here too. Center it, gonna You can do it right here. I'm gonna use key command Command ship, See to center my copy. Yeah, I want it bigger so I could do make it bigger a few ways. I could either click on there, click e make it big like this. I am going. Teoh, use command shift and arrow. Are these carrots to make it bigger or you can do it manually. Right here. Here we go. I'm gonna want colored this type. So let's Marco through that in the swatches palette again. I can reference pdf one reason the style guy and to see the colors. And here's the numbers for me. But what also cool is that in creative cloud you can have libraries, so the CC library. Click on that. It's on my other screen. I'll drag it over so you can see it. I have it set up where I have Guy Evans and I have all of his colors already set up here, which makes it way easier. I don't have to enter them every single time. So I am going to make this blue. Just click on it there. Let me hide this guy. Need it right now. You can see that it added it over here into the documents watches as well, and I'm going to make this. It's golden yellow color and again out of it, and I know that we need to add his website and phone number. So I just clicked and made a little text box. And there's pipe. It ends. Vacancy Guy Evans Shamlan on Well, it it's mind Teoh. Six. Solich This go to my type palette, which is here or again. You could do it here. Doesn't matter. Convinced regular. And I want this to be this brown. Select it, Commanche. If CDA semper I have something like, Here's what we have so far. I know I'm going to want probably a line right here. So for that going to come over here underneath the T, the type tools lined pool Click on that. Here's right. Construct the color. I'm probably gonna do this, Brown. I'm probably going to make it a little small. Viral growth 0.5. And I'm going to click Onda hold shift to make it straight a little easier. And then that looks pretty good. All right, so we're getting closer. We're almost there. So this type is bothering me a little, so I'm going. Teoh, look at this again. I'm This is just where I want it. A little more content stepping and a little smaller. This convinced to just choosing a font. This old this a little bigger again. I can use the key command. Okay, so say this is something going to show you say I like Oh, I want the font this big. And now it's being cut off. How we fix that as we go to our Black Arrow selector tool, and then we can just open it up. Think about this whole too. And I want to decrease this space between these two. So I select all of it. You can do command a or manual expected, and then I'm going. Teoh, decrease the leading between these. So we'll see. What size is this? This is 30. So right now it's 36 newcomers feels better, or you can pipe in and manually if you want as well. All right, it's good. And then this logo is a little big, so I'm gonna on my Flacco tool. Select. Just shrinking down. Get ahold. Command shift. If you just hold shift like I just did, it's just gonna shrink the box satchels better. And I am slept in women things around, and I'll just keep doing this until I'm happy. Okay, now that I have everything looking how I want it on this page, let's work on the back. I should say, Teoh, some people really, really like having layers and something simple like this. I don't feel like it's necessary, but maybe if you're working on a more complex thing that has a bunch of different layers, it might bother you so you could select all of these. Make a new layer that says photos. And then you have you know, all of this on type. But just get command Z. I rarely do it. Some people like it cause they think it makes selection easier. But if you are on the black pin, tool are not going to live here on the black selection tool and say, I wanted to select to this, and I had these images over it. If you just hold down command, it'll select through the different ones. So let's say I have three images stacked this 123 I select here I hold the command tool down. I select again, it grabs the next 10 no. Select again, and that grabs the back one. So I never feel like I really need layers that much. If I If you have a handle on your on your polling until if you have a handle on your selection tool and using that command key, another thing you might wanna know is like, What if you are doing something? I mean, this is a great design because it looks weird, but say I want this image to be in front of this image. You would select this and then you want to bring it to front so you can hold the control down, and this will pop up and you can arrange. Bring to front letters, Of course. Always a key command for that as well, Which I prefer. I think that's ah, an easy way. Control and click on this control arrange bring to front or you consent it backward or forward Bring front brings all the way in the back Bringing it forward just brings out one enough love So there's that I'm gonna command Z all of this We get a postcard back how I want it And now we're gonna look at the back So whenever you see the hand pop up, it's because you can't come over here. Select the hand. Come back here, select this. But I like to just keep it on the selection tool and then just push the space bar to move around So the back was going to be We're gonna have postage on the back. So here is where I'm gonna grab posted template that I got for the postage area template that I got from this different mom's gonna important here. Paste in here. So here is their template. It's not a in design template, Aiken. See, what kind of is by the link is just a pdf and I imported Pdf here. So this I do want to put on a layer because I want a reference this postage area, because in this is where you can't put any of your design. I do want to have it on its own separate layer. So I'm going Teoh, select it. Go to my layers palette again. If you will need to goto windows When I click on this new layer and I'm going to put it, I'm going to put it right here. You notice this will turn red. So you know it's on there. And now when I hit the eye goggles on and off and I'm going to actually put it, I'm gonna take it, click and drag it underneath because I have all my artwork right now on this layer, and if you double click on it, you can label it. I'm gonna call it uh uh template, and then I'll call this layer artwork. So now when I start doing back, I can click on an often see make sure I'm not in the red zone, So nine to look at my rough again, and it looks like I want to put a deck. Shocked here, de see, there's not exterior tech shot. And I have guys in picture, and that looks good. So maybe I'm thinking, and then I can click over here. Make sure. Yep. Okay. We're all right. Okay. Let's talk about what If I want to put something in a circle or a different shape. So maybe for a guy's picture, I decided that I want it to be around so we could do a couple different ways again. I could have decided that already. And I could come over here to the shape tool click on the Ellipse who might have Teoh. You might just see it as a square. So you have to hold it, click and hold down to the lips, and we'll drag it and then I'll kit while it selected I'll hit command thes, and then I'll grab this picture. And again, I'm like, Why is it so big? I don't want that. So I'll do the command option ship. Yeah, just a shrink it down, and then I'll, uh, use the white tool white selection tool. 12. Project Walkthrough - Prepping Postcard For a Printer: Okay, now that I have my postcard approved, um, it looks good. It's ready to go to print. So I'm gonna go back over to Vista Print. Looking at my info we have here off their website, it's gonna tell me the acceptable file formats. Uh, I'm going to use a pdf. I recommend using the pdf for all of it because it's the highest quality at the smallest file sides that you can get. Andi, this is sane. They have specific. If you're creating a pdf and saying in Acrobat Distiller, see, this is what I mean. Sometimes they don't say it's kind of sounds behind the time, So we are creating a PDS, and so we will use their setting. So I click here to download their settings, And then I put it into my templates folder and here's how. I'm gonna grab that. I'm gonna go on file. Not everyone has this, but since they do have it, I'm gonna use it. I'm gonna go to Adobe pdf presets, going to fine. And in this one Now I'm gonna click load and here I have put this into template folder. Here's my job options open and, uh, Ah, click. Same done. And now, when we go to export file export, we have put my pdf in here. Save when I click up here. Now it's right here. It's called the Stiller printer. Usually when you get something like this from a printer, it's gonna have a name like this one right here. J g. The export in design. That's from a different printer that I use and they name it something that makes more sense . So I click on layers that the Stoller printer what's interesting and you'll run into this again. I feel like people don't update their stuff very well. Sometimes is you'll notice when we were over here, Mr Print, if we If I'm reading this, it says Adobe Acrobat nine. Document is what they want, but it doesn't change it. Teoh nine. So I'm gonna click here, and I'm gonna say 89 because that's what they were requesting. Even though they're printer settings aren't working again. This is why I chose this one, and this is gonna be the most complicated. I don't think you'll have to bed. Um, I am not using leads for this design, but I have them set up, and I'm just going to click on them anyway. Tohave for when I upload the file and then I'll just hit export. It's gonna make the pdf. So that's one way to do one. Paying I like to do is also convert my fonts toe outlines. So, uh, gonna select all paint one, and then you can come up to type and pray outlines. Select all this one type, create outlines. If you are using a drop shadow, you might wanna watch that, because I think it will take the drop shadow off. All right, see, what else do we need to check? We know our colors air and see him like a So you just want to scroll through and see there's is a little excessive. They talk about resolution, the images being 300 peopie I so you can check those as you're importing them. I talk about this in the importing section of the class. You don't need to put any crops or anything on your postcard because that when you put it into the program online, unless your printer specifically asks for them, don't do it for any of the online printing. If you're printing with a local printer, maybe they'll ask you for something like that. Export here. Now we have our pdf by double Click on that will open up. Looks good. You can check the size over here and yeah, that's it.
