1. Introduction to Graphic Design Projects: are now that we've done a bunch of exercises toe learn design principles as well as topography and color theory and their real world applications. This section includes MAWR design projects that you can use to adhere portfolio and gain more experience with the software and applying color, topography and effective design principles and practices. So some of them will just use photo shop and again photo shops, all pixel based. We need that layers panel up, and if you just zoom in your eventually going to see the pixels, of course, right now you can have layers that are vector based, like shapes and text, for example. But generally, photo shop is all about pixels were dealing with raster images, and if you want to add any kind of special effects to your designs, either for these projects or others, you can add that in Photoshop can adjust the lighting and all that, and then save it as a new file. You can save it again as a P s d. Then you don't have any compression, like is if you saved as a J peg before you place it into in design. If you need in bed on a Web page, though you do need to save as a PNG A J peg, for example, or something else I could give for Jeff. But if you go to file place in in design again, you can place images you can place ward documents and those air for the projects where we're creating, for example, an advertisement postcard designed, a gig poster and editorial layout, anything that's going to be published or on a piece of paper. We're gonna create that in design, especially if we're dealing with a lot of text that we need to flow like an annual report. And then, if you want to send that printer, you're often going to use a pdf. So you're gonna get a file print to PDF or file export and then set it as a PdF and again illustrator is all about illustrations, and you can create logos, and it's all vector. This is vector, and while photo shop is arrester, so if we zoom and it's not gonna pixel ate for the practical projects in these sections, we're using the same support file folder earlier. But instead of using topography, applications, design principles or color applications were actually going to the third folder there called Projects, and inside there you'll have some pdf's of my examples. You'll have illustrator files you have in design files. And then there's some images there as well, as well as illustrations like the street lights that I drew. So follow along with those examples, and you can create your own custom designs to thanks, and I'll see in the next lesson. 2. [PROJECT] Design a Photo Text Clipping Mask in Photoshop: under this hands on project, we're gonna create a photo text, social media ad or Web banner ad. Whatever the context is, there's a couple things to consider when you're creating a ad that's meant for online. So if you just Google Facebook ad sizes, you can see the current and sizes that you should have, whether you're boosting, opposed or you're getting clicks. The website. There's also on Google AdSense, the most successful ad sizes and then their industry. Standard size is like a leader board that goes across the top, for example, so this one will be using a Facebook ad size 1200 by 6 28 So go ahead and open up. Photoshopped go to file new and then for with do 1200 then for heightened onto 6 28 and keep Resolution at 72. That's fine for Internet and just click OK, and so we have our size right here. The ad. It looks a bit large. It's actually going to downsize when it's on the screen, depending on how zoomed in the person is to the browser. But this is at 66.7%. If you get a view and then 100% or control come in. Plus, you actually zoom into actual percent, but but I'm a zoom out back so we can see the whole canvas on the screen. So go ahead and go to file, open and navigate to the support files under design principles and go to composition images and open this one up here. If you want to follow along with his example, you don't have to. You can use your own photos as long as you have some kind of photo that has some content it some texture. Eso we have that one open and then also goto file open and go to repetition and consistency and images and open up either this one or that one. For this example. You just need some kind of abstract background like that. First thing gonna do. We could copy and paste is over. But what I like to users pull that out off the tab like so click and drag that ever like so you can see it's a bit large compared to our ad that we're going to create here, but something like this works and it just clicking around the corner, holding shift to maintain the proportion and just press, enter or return, and that will apply that resize it. Now you can see in our layers panel if you don't have that good a window and then layers make sure that's up a swell as tools and options. We have a new layer with this content there on top of the back on there. Now we need to bring this one over, so click and drag that off. He's the move tool, click and drag it over, like so All right. That it's pretty closely. Usually don't want to stretch things out larger than they are originally cause when it re samples, makes it larger, has to fill in that space is gonna picks late. But first up does a pretty good job downsizing, but upsizing it doesn't. But this is just slightly so. It's not a big deal. I'm gonna resize that just a little bit like that. Enter our so first. Before we duplicate this, we need a bump this color up a little bit. We could use adjustment layer, but I'm just gonna go to image adjustments and then he saturation, I was gonna pop the saturation up just a little bit. So pops out more And also the lightness, I think just a little bit. All right, I'm gonna press control or command j duplicate that. And I hit the icon of this 3rd 1 for now, because you'll see this effect that we're gonna do. I'm gonna bring that back up in a second, so we need to add some text of our message. So select the horizontal type tool right here, clicking, let go. And I'm just gonna put follow You're dreams and I'm going Tiu. Let's see, That's pretty good. And that needs to be a little bit closer so we could make that two different layers and then merger. But what we can do instead is to go to a window and then character and just pull character over here and you'll see right here the size is very because it doesn't everything in there because it's two different sizes. We have it all selected. But right here, where says auto. I'm gonna bring that down. Uh, not that much. Let me see, um, a little bit. Just click and drag. If you hover over it here and click and drag it'll instead of handed. Type it in some like that. Alright, good, says the character panel. Obviously in designs. Better with formatting text if you have a lot of text. But it's something simple. Like that photo shop does have some pretty good tools there. All right, someone click and drag it out. If you remember, design principles want some breathing room? So it's far spacing who want this? Ah, made some consistent spacing from the ed there, But on this side, compared to that, we don't want it running off the edge. Enter. We've got kind of a symmetrical layout so far. Things, photos, more portrait orientation, this one landscape so and that's fine. What we're gonna do is create our techs clipping a mask right now are coping. Master, This text this steps probably the most confusing for some students. The first time they try. It s so you just have toe. Make sure you're doing ever step correctly, but it's pretty simple once you get it. So if you click and drag this type layer below that photo layer so we've got a photo layer and then a type player hold all on the PC or option on the Mac and hover your mouse. Don't click it. Just hover it in between these two turns into that symbol and then click. All right, so now we've got our clipping less. You can move it around and you can see the photo fills up that text. Alright, so you can put that back over here and you could put a special message here. Or this is why I have this duplicate layer here. If you want to put that back in there and then bring the opacity down so that you can see part of it. I need to clip out that part of it there. But let me just do selection of the marquee selection tool. So I just deleted that and said, I'm asking it cause that's fun. So I'm bringing me a passing down the top just for some contrast, right? So you could have it like that, or you could have a little bit of it showing either way, just personal preference on what kind of look you're going for. So that's the clipping mask technique. We're just looking at balance in this overall layout. How there's an interplay between the person looking at my friend Kelly looking up, having an idea and then the message of the ad. And then you could add some text here as well. This would be your specific text, like sign up now for this class and follow your dreams. You know, whatever. But the cloaking mess technique is pretty fun. Just to give you an idea of what we can do in photo shop, you're just gonna file, save as and just save as a JPEG or PNG if you want to put it on the web. Thanks. And I'll see in the next lesson. 3. [PROJECT] Design an Infographic with Color Harmony: in this project, you learn more about illustrator in the context of creating an infographic a couple different ways to visually represent data, and you'll learn about more about alignment as well as color. So if you want to follow along, you can open this file up. I have it in the support files under projects folders just called infographic. But if you want to create one from scratch, we can also do that as well. On yours doesn't have to look exactly like this one is just about learning the techniques but also learning the principles and putting them into practice again. So go ahead and go to file new. And for this one, I'm gonna do landscape orientation right here. So where the width is longer than the height and I'm just doing letter size here. So that's seven. Her 92 points and 612 points. If you don't have that preset and just click OK, any kind of size here that's gonna fit in a publication is fine or even a Web graphic. A lot of infographics can communicate everything from union like the New York City subway where all the routes go, and then publications like magazines and online websites use infographics to indicate budgets and things like that. So this one is kind about a student population of the university, and we have representation here. Female male, freshman, sophomore junior seniors with a three D semi transparent pie chart there. And then we have majors in that department film, journalism, public relations, design. And those are all different colors. You know, this is a complementary color scheme, so we'll be applying that. So first, to create that pie chart. What we can do is click and hold on to this column graph tool on the tools panel and then go down a pie graph tool and then you can dry out and cannot shift perfect circle there when you type in some numbers. So whatever stats you have, if you want to make this an actual project for something, you can, you know, say you're writing a report and you want to add a graph pie chart to it. You can do that. So I'll just type in some numbers, though, do 25 35 40 55 and then once you have that, you can click this little check mark. There and you'll notice it. Adds all of these kind of like the one we have at the top. And if that's what you want, that's fine. Or or if you go back, if you have to have doom across the top, if you wanna just one pie chart not a bunch of different visually represented circles. So same thing here, 45 and then who could delete that one 55 35 45 some 25. I'm typing those in and just clicking the next one. The ads one like that. Just delete it so you want him all across the top like that, and then click this apply, and then we'll have our pie chart right here. Now it's in grayscale mode, so we need to change the color of these. So if you have the color panel up here, if you don't just go to a window and then color and if you click this topper and corner, says Grayscale, because if normally if I just select one these with the white arrow and double click it, try to change some color. It's not going to change its only changing it to another grayscale color, so we gotta go over here. Just got RGB, and it will change it over to the same thing with this one. You know, whatever we want, you can change it to different ones. This is if you don't want to use this color scheme. Ah, that's in the color guide. If you just want to kind of do a bunch of colors that doesn't look is good, though, right to all over the place. We do need to add some colors that are part of a color scheme. So I'm gonna select this orange here and we got a color guide clicking this right here. And there's our color scheme that we can use. We can go. Complementary. Split, complementary. Analogous. All those ones we covered earlier. This woman do complementary to some of select that. And I'm gonna click up here and change that to this one. This one and this one. All right. So complimentary color scheme. And there's our basic pie chart. Okay? And you could have the numbers on top if you want using the type tool. This one, I'm just visually representing the data. Without that, we want to make this three d. We need to get rid of the strokes. If you click and drag on all of them with the selection tool and see here we got a black stroke. The border. We need to hit none for that. We don't want to stroke their If we're gonna do this. Three. Do you want to see the color there? So to make it three d what we need to do with it Selected Goto effect and then under illustrator affects here go three D and then extrude and bevel Move this over here so you can see it and hit preview and you'll see that you can move it around, right? So it's kind of three d effect. With this extreme depth, you can make it smaller, larger and so on, So that's kind of the thickness of it. So what do you have? One that you like kind of the thickness of it. Go ahead and hit. OK, there's some other settings here, like shading for the three D artwork. I think plastic shading for this one's fine. So click OK. And now with the white arrow. If you click on it, you see the original still there, right when you select it so still gonna look like that when you select it with the white arrow. But it should still be easy to be able to select which one you want. Soto. Add some transparency to this. Just pull up the transparency panel. Just got a window on transparency, and I'm gonna bring this down to, say 45. Then you can really see through to the other pieces and then say this one as well. You could bring it 65 or so, And you could change those a little bit, too, if you want. It just depends on what? Look, you're going for a source. How much transparency want in the design? All right, so that's our first little piece there. And creating Infographic. We got our three d pie chart. You move this over here, remember proximity. Want this away from the vaginal on it? You know, flush with hedge like that. So a little bit away. We don't want to trap this white space that we're gonna fill that up. So if the next one we can add these up here, So like you saw earlier, we could add it using the pie chart or just create one individual ones. So to do that, instead of clicking and dragging, right, you just clicking, let go, and you can type in some number like 45 45. And as long as they're the same, it will be a perfect circle. And then there's one of our circles there, so you could create other ones. There's well, just click 65 point 65 point and so on. All right, let's create two more really quickly. 25 and I'll do 55 points. All right, so what you would do is, if you want these all aligned, I mean as faras, on order of this, you could do smallest or largest. It just depends on what data you're representing. You'll see those smart guides see how it's intersecting green lines, it tells me, is perfectly line. But if it's not, you know, just barely not aligned. What you can do is click and drag around all of it. Make sure you just get these right there. There we go, and then click a line up here and you can click this one here, it'll vertically aligned by the center, and I'm gonna zoom in here so you can see it as we as we just it so a line. You can align it by the top center or bottom. I think for this one, it's best in aligning along the center. You can also distribute them evenly by the center, the left and right hand side. So just depending on how much alignment you want in the shapes. Now, for time's sake, I'm not gonna add the text on top of those. But all you would do, of course, is just select the type tool here and just click and created a text from there, and you can put the text on top of each other is just like we have in our example over here , right? And that text is aligned as well, using the align function or just smart guides. So for the student population here, that's just obviously a text tool. So click and drag population and we can make this larger and we can resize it once we draw it out. But you know something like that, and then we want ads rounded rectangle on the edge. So if you get around in the rectum, we could do that, or you can just do rectangle tool and change it after the facts. If you draw that out, you need to goto object a range, send it back. You know, get behind that text and I'm a change This text color toe white stands out, obviously. All right, now, when you print this to PdF, or if you export as a J. Paige or whatever, it's gonna cut this off on the edge anyway. But if you just don't want that there, obviously with this kind of shape, we can just click and drag the corner, bring it to the edge like that. But if we wanted a rounded edge, we can actually, with Creative cloud, we don't have to go to effect style eyes round corners with earlier versions. Actually, just click and drag this corner here, and I bring that in because this whole thing has around it looked to it. So for consistency, repetition of a style we needed round that out. But it does the same thing over to here. So if I brought that in, obviously with the selection tool bringing over now I'm seeing the edge of that. I just wanted flush off the edge. So what we can do a couple different things you could do. But for this quick example, I'm just going to click and drag another rectangle on top of it and then click and drag. So I have just these two selected, not the text. And then, on the Pathfinder panel, click the 2nd 1 here, subtract from the top and then I'm gonna make sure it's in the back again. Object, Arrange send it back or use that shortcut. Now, this color here, you noticed the shape suited earlier. It's we could switch those up a swell just like this example. So what you can do is we have this color guide still here. We can just select. That depends on if you want to reset it to a new one or just use, I would say keep a consistent the same one we're using here. So this color here is the same color that we're using over there, so you can just click it and then just add a little bit of variation and contrast in our colors. Okay. But it still is harmonious. Alright, it's complimentary color scheme. Now, you might have noticed this content down here. You know how do you draw that? Well, you could draw something from scratch, and I would suggest drawing things from scratch as much as possible. But a quick tip in photo shop, you can actually go to file new and voter shop. And I'm just going to do just a basic sighs here. Somebody has some room to work with. And you can actually use some pre made shapes for infographics from Photoshopped. So there won't be raster image like pixel based as long as he drives a shape and copy it. So if you click and hold on to the rectangle tool in photo shop, go down a custom shape tool and click and drag out. And if you hold shift, don't maintain the right proportion and then go to edit copy and then go over to illustrator Go to edit paste. All right, just click, OK? And you can apply a fill to it right away and use the eyedropper tool and just grab one of these up there. So if you go back to your shop, you might be thinking, Well, how did you get this specific shape? Well, if you click up here over the top when you have the custom shape tool selected. It should list all these custom shapes. If you only see a couple of them, just click this gear icon here and go to all. All right? And so we have that one for the mail. So I'm gonna find the female or it there, click and drag, hold shift and a copy right away and then back in Illustrator Control or command V for paste. And I'm gonna use the eyedropper tool and actually go with the orange for that just, uh, offset it a little bit. And so what we could do here is make these a little bit smaller to kind of fit in here. We don't want a trap, whitespace. So when we're thinking ahead of time about how we're going to represent this, let's just say student population there's, you know, 30% more females and males in the student body. So to represent that what you can dio, I'm gonna actually move this up and move all of these up A little bit of reading room, thinking about grouping and spacing. So what you could do? We could do the transform each right you go to object, transform transform each and then tell it to move. You know a certain amount, and then you hit copy and then control or command D to repeat it. But with this, it's a lot easier. You can just all click and drag hold shift to keep it level all right, and then press control or command E again, and it will repeat it across the top. There. It's the same thing here. It might not be the same distance, and if you are picky about that, we could just use the transform each command. But I think that's fun. Now this is visually representing data, and it's got some blank space here. That's fine. Remember, negative space can be on the edges, and we don't want trapped white space but is on the edges and can breathe. That's fun. And finally, these corners here. You could do that with the pen tool. Or you can click and drag a rectangle tool out. So we needed to you is use the rectangle tool, click and drag out hold shift for perfect square oh, click and drag to duplicate it. This is just one way to do it. Hover over the corner with the selection tool to rotate and hold shift for that 45 degree angle, and we just need to make a little bit larger holding shift something like that, not a click and drag around both of them. And then on the Pathfinder panel, I do the 2nd 1 subtract from the top that we got a nice corner there. Then you can all click and drag it or option. Click on the Mac and bring it down together, side rotated, click and drag the corner, hold shift, and then we've got another corner over here. If we wanted that, we don't want a trap White space. But I think that should be fine there. So that's our infographic. Just a couple more techniques, but also applying effective color, complementary color in this context. Consistent color. Good spacing throughout. So be creative with that. Come up with some data that you find or is part of a report. Maybe you're working on it for work or college or university, or even a hobby, and then visually represent that data using illustrator. So this one we've used Illustrator, the other one. We used photo shop, but you couldn't you know you could say this as a J peg or you could save it as a PNG put online. You could import it into photo shop and then add some photos. You could add some photos within illustrators. Well, if you wanted. And if you were making this part of a publication designed like a brochure, you could actually save as illustrator file and just go to file, place in in design and just place it into in design as illustrator file in the next two projects will be using in Design Illustrator and Photoshopped together to create a gig poster and then a postcard. Thanks, and I'll see in the next lesson. 4. [PROJECT] Design a Gig Poster: this example. We're going to create a gig poster for a local artist and just reiterate some of the principles we've learned in this course, and we'll learn a couple more techniques along the way. So go ahead, navigate to graphic design, support files and projects and double click on Gig Poster in design Document. If you have a earlier version of In Designing Anger, the idea Mel file. But if you have a creative cloud, just go the regular in his own document, and it looks kind of messed up here. Obviously, this is just a tip with the selection air there, right click. If you have a PC or control, click. If you're on a Mac somewhere over that background and go to display performance and then go to high quality display. And if we want to preview this in the mode in which it will look when we print it to PDF order paper, just click and hold on the bottom of the tools panel on Go to Preview. This is just a Gig poster that fills up the space here. In this lesson, you'll learn how to distort this Texan illustrator and then placed these photos and in design and place the text in from Illustrator after adjusting it. An illustrator Causal shares a lot more powerful when it comes to text warping and knows we have hierarchy. So this is the artist's name and then the album name, and it kind of looks like a path in the negative space. There has a slight lines in the back, which also indicate pathways and then album release party. Then we just have a left online, simple text at the bottom, and you can open up this example and look at it and check out all the different shapes and see how it works. So let's go and get started. First thing we want to do is go to photo shop and open up some of the images in case you want to make any adjustments to the images beforehand. And if you want to sharpen this photo, of course, you can just go to filter sharpen on sharp mask and make it a little bit sharper and click OK, any other edits you can do in Photoshopped beforehand, or if he even wanted to do a special effect like if you had this photo here and you gotta image adjustments threshold. You can do kind of a special effect. Look, we're just black and white, so if you make any adjustments in their infrastructure, saving his new files or you can save over the old ones. But I was just saving as a new one. So you have the old original as well. The first thing we want to do is insert these photos so we know what kind of text we need to make to wrap around them so you can make it exactly like this if you want. But I was just actually being just creative and creating whatever type of design keeping in with this thing. This is analogous color scheme instead of, ah, complementary color scheme, but you can do exactly this design if you want. You can follow along with this lesson, or you can use the same techniques but create I'm unique design. So let's insert these images first. What we need to do is when we're in in design, go ahead and go to file noon document, and then this size is actually tabloid. It's for a poster, so it's 11 inches by 17 inches. If you want just typed in manually. If you don't have that as a preset and then click OK, we need to answer some triangles in. But if you click and hold and the polygon tool if you click and drag if you press up and down and left and right, it doesn't really give you many options compared to illustrator, so we actually need to g o to illustrator. We could create their some ways to create triangles in in design. But it's easier, actually, just to create an illustrated your season these programs together. So go to file new and if you want, instead of just a generic size image, just go to print and then tablet just so we see the area that we're working with. Click OK, it doesn't really matter cause we can resize it when we place it in, uh, in design. But click and hold on the rectangle to on the tools panel and go down to the polygon tool and click and drag. And if you press up on the keyboard before you let go of the mouse, you can add more sides or make its others fewer side. So if we want to make for example, something a 3456 evidence on So for Triangle obviously need three sides. We can hold shift if you want it perfectly. Level like that, and we just like other mouse. So we have our shape so we can go to edit copy or controller command, see and then go back into in design and goto Edit paste and what I like to do instead of having to repeat that process. Just keep this over here as an object that we can just all click and drag or option. Click and drag on the Mac, and then it can create new shapes like that are so the 1st 1 just hover over the corner here and click and drag it to rotate it. You can hold shifts, so it's perfectly level like that. We can click and drag this one if you want, and then hover over the corner again. Click and drag. This is with the selection tool in the Black Arrow, and we'll do something like this. I'm like one that's a little bit more unique isn't an exact copy of the other ones. So something like that art. So I've got her shapes. Am we're gonna put the title appear And then the album name right here going through there is this. Go ahead and place the photos after you have edited them in photo shop. Just gonna file place and then select your image that you want to use and you can have replaced lectured items selected if you have one of these triangle selected and will actually embed it in there, so I'll show you what I mean. So I click open, then invented in that the problem is she sideways. And if we want that right side up, you can choose the direct suction tool, the white arrow on the tools panel, and click over here, and that really selects this shape inside. If you go over the edge, obviously you can see that we can't rotate it. We can just click and drag the corner resize so you could keep it like that. Or if you need to rotate it just right, click over somewhere, go to transform, rotate, and we need to rotate this It says 90 degrees, So click OK, and then there we go. If you need to just flip it upside down, that would be 100 80 degrees, of course. So 90 degrees, 45 degrees hard, eight degrees through her 60 degrees, 270 degrees is our all the different numbers that we need to know for that specific effect . So there's the 1st 1 So let's go and insert the next one. Now. I'm gonna do a different technique this time. If you get a file place and select this one here and uncheck, replace selected item and click open. Now it turns it into icon there, of course, the cursor. If I click right over this image, though, right over this triangle it'll embedded in there and this one is sideways as well. You move that around in the frame, you might think. Well, let's just keep it like that for this one. So now let's add the title. So click on this type tool here and just click and drag out. Type in Kelly Press controlling on the PC, your command down the Mac to select it. And then let's make a little bit larger, and you can choose some kind of custom fund whatever you want to use so we can change the size up at the top or you can hold control in the peace, your commanding on the Mac click and drag the corner and they're bringing out like so All right, so we have the title there, so we need to change some kind of color. So go back to Illustrator and let's just select some kind of color here. Let's say some kind of greenish color here. Hit OK, and then goto window and they remember color guide. And then click this downer instead of complementary like an infographic do analogous for this example. So now we have five different colors that we could use in this color scheme. So for this 1st 1 we could add to a color theme or swatches, but they're someone's gonna right, click, copy or control or command See to copy. That's six digit color code They're gonna go back to in design and must select this text. DoubleClick the tea down here, and I'm gonna pace that color in right there. And I'm also going to add a little bit of a border here. Now, you could just add a stroke to the object like this, right down there on the bottom of tools panel and then paste it in there, and then we just need to make a stroke larger. So if you got a window and then stroke window, then stroke on, make sure this is selected with the selection tool. They'll just make that larger and double click on that. Stroke their bottom of the tools panel right there. And I'm gonna pace that color in and actually make this more unique border here. Make a little bit larger so we can preview it so far, look a little bit different than the other example, cause I'm just trying to show you different techniques. Now, if you wanted to use that other technique I used, you just click and drag and then click and drag the corner off the edge there. And then it should be behind this other one here so you can use the arrow and just move it slightly like so. And then we need change, Phil, but I don't want it to match these. I want to be a analogous color scheme, so go back to Illustrator and let's just choose this one here. It's just a quick way to do it, and I'll get that six digit color code there and go back to in design and I'll change the fill of this one. Paste it in. Click. OK, there we go. So, so far, we've got analogous color scheme. You got some triangles here as far as hierarchy. I should be drawn to the photos and also the artist's name. And then we're gonna have the album name right here, so I'll go back to normal mode and what we need to do next is create that custom text that just comes through here. So the first woman figure this was gonna be pretty large here than get slightly smaller here. So go to illustrator and select the text tool. It's like the type tool clicking like go type in paths. And it doesn't matter as faras the font size right now, because we're going to just resize it later because this vector, But we need do you need to be able to see it. So let's change the color Max to change it to this color. Another color on this color scheme. Then go to object envelope distort, make with warp. If we go back to in design, you'll see needed something larger there and then it gets more. We don't want it larger than the name Kelly for hierarchy, but it needs to be somewhat comparable of this size here than get slightly smaller, who had to illustrator and actually need to rise a little bit, just like in there. So there's an Ark bulge, flag wave, fish, try, rise. And then we need to bring that up like so. But the left hand side needs to be larger, so drag horizontal into the negative like that in drag. Bend into the positive. All right, So should look something like that. I think maybe even mawr art. Click OK at a copy, go to in design, edit paste and we'll move this up like so click and drag it up. It's actually a bit large compared to Kelly swimming toe. Bring it down a little bit, all right. And part of this is experimentation where you can see actually move this down. There we go. So it needs a little bit of reading room. So something like that and we're going to bring this out. So that's why fits in there. Okay, so you got paths and now we can check it out. Do the preview. It's looking good so far. We need to add something right here and then something. They're here. I'm gonna keep all this text the same color just for consistency in the message. So we'll go back to illustrator and then we need something that leans down. So put and make it larger, and I'll change the color back to that other color scheme. Actually, just used the eyedropper tool to grab that color. So it's the same and then I'll get object envelope distort, make with warp. And this one needs to go the opposite way. So goes something like that and it could be pretty consistent with the size here. Maybe a little bit of distortion, but ah, the bend definitely needs to go downward and click OK at a copy back to in design, edit paste and bring this over here. Cool thing is, we can resize it after we paste it in. So click and drag this out. Like so. All right, Now let's create the next one, which gonna is going to need to be smaller on this side than larger on the right hand side . So go back to illustrator, type it in. Use the arrow clicking, Dr Corner. And just grab that with the eyedropper tool. Get that color again, and then the object envelope distort make with warp. And this one year, we got to go the opposite way. So it should come up and that it needs to be smaller on the left hand side, larger on the right. So something like that might be a little too much. We want to be readable. All right, click OK, control or command. See control or command V to paste. So bring it over here, click and drag an over and bring this up a little bit. I'm looking at the spacing in between here trying to have some consistency and breathing room without having trapped white space. Ah, but this does look like pads, right? This whole negative space here in the background, it's kind of like a path, and then these almost look like they're standing up in a way, we need to add more details down here for this one. I'll just use the type tool, and then you can type in your info. For example, I would just click and drag around if you want to center it just from left to right of the page and then click up at the top to center album least party and make that limit larger. And we can make this white if we're going. Teoh put a shape behind it, obviously. So I will drag a rectangle out here like so and set the color. Let's go back to illustrator. Let's just say we're using this one here. So we use that color they're keeping it with scheme. Go back toe in design. Place that in there we go. And so what? This needs to be in the back. So when goto object, arrange, send back or use that shortcut are there we go And then we would need to add some more of the details where it is, so I won't click and drag and click that in and then you had put There we go. So this one looks a little bit different than the other one. Just because I'm showing you the same techniques but shown you how you can experiment with design and come up with different looks. If we want that same added lines in the background, you can go to illustrator so close this I'll delete all this and good illustrate. Just click and drag a line out, and then you can actually just all on the pizza option of Matt. Click and drag it to the side and then hold down. Control the on the peace here, commanding on the Mac, and it will just create a pattern. Then you can go to file save as save it as something like, You know, I did pattern, but for this one, we could just call it pattern to you. Call pattern to and click Save. Okay, and then we can go to file place and got a pattern to open, and then it fits that area there. Obviously, it's on top. We want it behind it. So again, object arrange. Send it back. And if we want the preview to look better, it'll look fine when we print pdf. But the preview is set currently in my settings to not do high quality, just so it doesn't slow down the processing, but ah, that's probably or default. So if you want, fix that just right, click over it or control click on the Mac and go to display performance weight, the bottom and then high quality display And then all that's left is just go to file export and then you can export it as a PdF. And it would look like this example that we have here, or it'll look like the other example that I created for the intro. So be creative. Have fun. Just think about the design principles that we talked about as far spacing. Have some breathing room. So have fun using illustrator to create custom text like this as well shapes that you can then use in in design. Thanks, and I'll see in the next lesson. 5. [PROJECT] Design a Postcard Part 1: in this lesson will be using in design illustrator and Photoshopped together to create this postcard that has two sides. So this is the one side of it. So we have a Grady int just a basic shape here, some type up here, I'll show you how to do this photo shop effect in the background with the pattern using illustrators. Well, on the next page, we have the area for the address, of course. And then the consistent branding in a Grady and a custom illustration. So let's get started. Go ahead and navigate to the graphic design, support fouls and go to projects. Goto postcard. And you can look around here and see this is a little bit pixelated. Looks like and again all we got to do to fix that is if you have a selection tool selected right click over it or control, click it on the Mac and go to display performance weight, the bottom and then high quality display. And then it'll look actually like it will when we export as a PdF. It look fine, regardless when we export it, but it's nice to see that it will actually look high Rez even without him toe print as a PdF. So do that. If anything looks kind of blocky, you can fix that pretty easily. For example, this illustration that I drew if I just right click over it and in a display performance, high quality display looks a lot better. It'll print find regardless. But just to make sure something's not pixelated, I think it's fine, especially if you have a newer computer. Your processor should be able to handle that, rendering those high res graphics. So let's make this background design first. So what you need to do is go to photo shop and go to file open and open up this support for here from projects, images and the graphic design support files and over that up. And this is our image that we're gonna use for that, and we're gonna bring a pattern from illustrator into photo shop, apply the fact save as a PSD file and then place it into an in design file. So I didn't go to in design. I'll keep this open so we can see as the example and go to file New document and post arts postcards are gonna very depending on what country you're in, but here in the U. S. You can do with six inches height for there's a certain range you can't go above to get the same post card rate when you're sending it. But for this example, renew six inches wide, four inches high. You can search online. Look at the official Postal Service of your country to see what the size dimensions are, so it goes six and then four for margins. For this it it's not really a big deal, but I'll just bring that down to say, 1/4 of an inch margins and click. OK, and we have one page so far because I didn't indicate more than one page. So that's fine. We can click pages over here and add a new page right there. So we have Page one and page two. So let's go ahead and create our pattern. First, an illustrator so going to go to file new and we can make this the same as well. I have points. Here's the default unit of measurement, but we can actually type in six i n for i n. And that will change. Is that points automatically and the click Okay, let's do it the same size so I can see what size the original shape is gonna be. We can always stretch. It causes a vector, but I like to just see actual size as well. So click and hold on to the rectangle tool and go to the Ellipse stool. If you want to create a design like mine where you have circles, you could try some of the other shapes. But for this form into a circle and just click and drag with shift, and that will maintain a perfect circle. And it doesn't really matter with the filling stroke for now. So whatever color you want to do, we can set the color. I'm gonna have no stroke and just to fill. So go ahead and bring that up to the edge there, so intersex along the edge. And then we'll just all on the PC or option on the Mac. Click and drag, and then, if you want, you can hold shift to make sure it doesn't, you know, just isn't barely unaligned, but it should be fine with the smart guides and then let go and then press control the on the peace here commanding on the Mac right away. It's gonna create this pattern here and click and drag around all of it with the selection tool and click and drag it down like so, holding shift and then control de on the piece of your commanding on the Mac again before you de select it. And now we have our pattern that we can use so we could place this in as a file. But I'm just gonna copy and paste it. So click and drag around all of it and go to edit, copy or use the shortcut Control C on the PC or command, see on the Mac and then go to photo shop and we're gonna go to file new and then we're gonna create this in inches. So this will be again six inches wide, four inches tall and weaken. Do 300 is fine for resolution for print context. These air smaller photos, but it is best practices to do 300 pixels per inch for print if you can, or 150. But if you get lower, you know senators really forward the Internet, but should be fun. Then you goto edit paste and then patient is pixels. That's fine. And it just goes right along the edge there. That's great. Press enter and that will place it in. All right, so now let's go get our image here and click and drag it over. I'm gonna use the move tool here and click and drag it on top of this photo. Here, minimize that. And now we have three layers, right. We have a background layer. There's layer of the pattern that we created an illustrator and paste it into photo shop. And then we have my friend Kelly photo. There's well, if you don't see these edges here, where we can click and drag the corner to resize it and hold shift to maintain proportion. Just make sure if you're using the move tool that show transform controls is selected up there. If you're using the move, tool some of click and drag it down like that. All right, there we go and he entered. Apply. There's changes now. What you can do is create kind of a clipping mask effect. So if you hold all on the PCR option, the Mac, with the photo on the top and the pattern below it. Just hover your mouse in between those two layers and hold all on the PC or option on the Mac and click and then take the brush and select this layer one here. And if you click and drag around, it will actually brush out that pattern. So the person kind of pops through. It has kind of popping through effect. Fresh writer left bracket and you can resize the brush instead of him. Didn't resize it up there in the upper left hand corner. So I'm just gonna click and drag so this bubble pops out there and then something like that . All right, so now we've got our effect. We need to save this as a PST file because we can actually place PST files again in the in design. That's fun. So you go to file save as and I already have this one in there if you want to see my example, but I'll just name this too. So example to and click OK, and now back in in design. Well, just place this you see, on the other example we have it on the first page and the second pages this so go to the first page and just gonna file place and then find that file. We just made Photoshopped file. Click open. Clicking like Gona should fit perfectly. It looks pixelated, but again, right. Click over here and then display performance weight the bottom, that high quality display. And if you want to pre V had us looks. You can click on the bottom of the tools panel and go to preview, so it's looking good so far, what we need to do if you see this example here, we need to create the shape here, though, so what we can dio and again. If you don't like the white background, you go back to photo shop and see this background layer here. You know whatever you want. You can click that color prescribe, picked a color out of her shirt, or you can just do a custom color whatever we want and then just press all backspace on the PC were option delete on the Mac, and it will fill that background layer with that color. And if you save it like I'll save it right now, go back to in design and then goto links and click the subtle says modified, double clicked update. That's in case you ever delete image or move it and then in design, can't find it. You need to right click to re link and find it. But with this it sees where it is but saying, Hey, it's been modified. What should we dio double click it and then it will update the file. So now let's create a circle here in the corner that matches this kind of bubble theme of the circle theme here. So click and hold on to the rectangle tool and go to the Ellipse tool, Click and drag this out hold shift. If you want to be a perfect circle and then for the stroke, let's just set it to something that will match. And then let's go up here. It can do a custom one. We can add a little bit of personality to if we want. If it matches, just depends on where we kind of Do you think I'll do that one? Cool. All right, so we have a stroke on it. No, Phil yet because we're gonna add a Grady int. So for the Phil here, if you go to the Great Aunt Tool the grating swatch tool here. If you click, double click on it right here and you have linear radial for this. Um, she's linear like the other example, and by default is black and white. So if you go to a window and then color and then swatches I mean, this is one way to do it. You can click and drag one of these presets onto either side of that lips. Go back to this double click that, All right, so click and drag that, you know, whatever kind of great you'd want to do in with this. Great until you can click and drag and it will change to that angle. Great against can kind of look hokey, kind of unprofessional. But if we do him well, especially if we're using and now just colors or complementary colors that can look pretty good, you can also get a window and then color and then just color, and then click on one of these and click over here. Pull us out here. Goto RGB. You're seeing what cases the print context with doing seem like a and they can really customize either side of it, right so I can click this yellow. It's good to see him. I k is the color panel. And just you can actually click one down here specifically. All right, so whatever we want to do, So we have a Grady int there, then we need to add some text. But before we do that, let's go ahead and add Ah, that Grady into the next pages. Well, so if you seen our example, we haven't area at least here in the United States. We need to have an area specific for the address of wherever you're sending it as well as the return. But then down here, they have an area often. And if you look online, they'll have official guidelines. But have a specific measurement for some space down here sometimes have bar codes on postcards and things like that, a minimum area for the address. On this, I'm just going to click and drag a rectangle out. So it take the right town tool, click and drag like that. And then for this, Phil would go back to the Grady in Click This and have the same exact one. All right, so it matches the front, So if you look at our example. We're almost done with the front page. All we have to do, really, After we create this identity here, we need to add some text here. So if you go back Teoh first page of our example go up here, go to pages, double click on that page right there. And I'm going to just take the type, tool, click and drag after the edge here, so doesn't embedded inside any of the shapes it's going to type are festival, and then we can make this a little bit different. You could just say downtown Port Smith. I'm just making something up. Saturday a terror eighth, All right. And then you could put on my example. I don't have an actual website because they don't want to just put some website there. So this year says, see, and then you put your your l there, obviously. So again, if you're fonts, don't show up. This is times your room, and most people will have that on their computer. But if you don't, you could just change it. Just click and drag over it and change it up there. If it's in brackets, it has kind of a pink highlight. It just means that you don't have that fund your computer, which isn't a big deal. You can just change it. So that's just the example. So we need to just make this white, so click and drag over that with a type tool on double click down there on the bottom of rules panel, and I'm just going to click and drive it up So it's white that will make this. We could actually make these different text frames if we wanted and then just really aligned him on the sides. But this example I'm just gonna set it to a specific size, and it's just experimentation, the shortcuts for this. But, ah, this is not a big deal. I can actually pretty quickly figure out ah, what kind of size it should be. Uh, if you want this to be a little bit smaller, like we want to look at proximity and consistent spacing around the edge. But what I mean is the leading right here around the topography section. That's probably a little bit too much space in between these two. So what you can use click and drag around these two lines and the letting is right here, remember? So I'm gonna bring that down. Try 30. It's probably too much my type in, like, 26. That's Prague did. All right, So we're pretty much done with our first page. We just need to add some identity down there kind of a logo. We're also going to use it there as well. And then we also need to add this background, which will be custom depending on what photo you're using. So we'll stop here in this lecture and will continue in the next lecture. Just save your file. Just could file save as I save it as in design file. So I'll just say postcard example to just put from lessons. So we know this is the one I'm creating during the lesson. So say that if you're not going to the next lesson right away, so you have it for later. I'll see in the next lesson 6. [PROJECT] Design a Postcard Part 2: art. Welcome back to the postcard design. And so so far we've had this little grating here A slight radiant with some white text. It pops out from the background, We've got a grating on the next page. We've got this custom pattern in the background using illustrator and then Photoshopped. So in this part, we will need to add that identity. So go back to illustrator and to create the example I made just gonna file new click, OK, And if you see back in the example, it just says just as art festival eso what we can do I would just say Be creative and create something that you like If you want to follow along specifically like with my example, just go ahead and click and hold on to the rectal tool Go to the Ellipse Tool and I'm actually gonna have a color here just to see the Phil here and click and drag and hold shift for a perfect circle and then go to the type tool and then just clicking. Let go art, click and drag the corner Hold shift for the original proportion For this example I'm gonna change it up a little bit. I'm gonna make it come off the edge a little bit So often, times in proximity were saying, Hey, you know, don't let things be flush like body copy next to a photo, things like that. But when you're doing something like a logo, I mean, if your mind fills in the blanks as faras uh, the type as long as it's readable, nets find we can change the Kern ing. I mean, there's a couple ways we could do this. But if you are either an in design or illustrator and you go up to character and you can change the current ing right here, obviously if you think they're a little bit too far away or too close to spacing between two letters or you can adjust the tracking right over here, if you have reverses, set the tracking same symbol right there and right there that's over in in designs. Either way, an illustrator, actually that we can take it and right click over or control click on the Mac and just go to create outlines. And now I don't have to have that font on my computer. If you sent this to me as the illustrator file or if you send it to a client to print out, Obviously they would need your font. Unless you do that, create outlines technique. So now it's actually points and pads and bring this down a little bit, just resize the corner there, and then I'm gonna create another one that just says festival. And then just something like this, something like that. And then we do the same thing with a right click over it. Create outlines. And the cool thing is, you can use the white arrow and select these individually. You can, of course, adjust things like if you wanted it really customize this text, you could do that as well. Um, so whatever we're on to do, you must do some like that excitement. Undo. I don't like the okay a little bit much. Go back. I just control Z to undo. All right, so I'm gonna move this. So this is not quite I'm gonna try to make it more symmetrical. They're something like that to make this festival little bit tinier phenomenon. Choose art and hold on shift And she's festival. I'm gonna object group Just so they're group together once you have the right space and that you want. And these are on top of that shape behind it. Right? So click and drag around all of that. And with the Pathfinder panel. If you don't have that, just goto window, then Pathfinder, click this 2nd 1 this minus front, and now it cuts it out. All right, then all we gotta do is create some lines behind it if you want to do that same thing I did . Ah, you can just click and drag. If you're the same angle, you can actually change at color there. Uh, let's see who could do the same. We could We could get this. We're gonna get the same exact one. This six digit color could there and apply right there. And so it is behind it. And then if you click and drag holding all on the peace here, option the Mac ideas that we make it a little bit longer. You can hold shift if you on the same angle. All right. If you don't want it over the thing like that, like if you just If you just want them, you know, like that you can actually hold shift. Will do a 45 degree angle if you want that angle. So you do something like that. I'm just tryingto make something a little bit different and the other example arts or something like that. So we click and drag around all of it, and then at a copy, go back to in design and I'm not so sure about blue matching with this. That doesn't. So what we can do is go back to Illustrator eso. Well, can change your back here. If I just select this right there, I'm gonna just change it, Teoh it obviously go pull a color out of there. So it exactly match. But for time's sake, I'm just gonna some kind of yellow like that, all right? And them for these right there actually will get that color could just so it matches blends in there. So just select all that and home. I'm holding shift to select all those together and then I'll click There actually could just could you just click there for a short cut? But sometimes the most recent one will be there for color. So there we go of If you don't want that stroke there, we can actually set that to none if you don't. So you just something like that either way. So I'm a click and drag around all that and go to edit copy and then go back to you in design at a paste. And then we have our identity, our branding. We'll just put it over here and this one's things where I'm actually gonna have it go flush off the edge a little bit or where it's really coast linage. Because if it cuts off right there, that's not a big deal. Ah, this isn't the official logo or anything. We're just creating kind of a graphic for identity just for this event. And if it cuts off part of the paper and the process is not a big deal, so I'll go to the next page and just place that in again, just at it paste. Just so we have it after we create our custom illustration in the top, some put that over there. If you don't like designing in this preview mode, you can click and hold on. Just go to normal on the bottom of the tools panel like that are. So if you look at our example, we need to add this here. That's pretty easy to do, of course. So if you go to the rectangle tool all right and then just drawn one out, you needed measure it according to the standards in your country. How big this should be on your postcards. But regardless which Cisco hadn't fill that with a white Phil and then for the border for the stroke, let's make it black. And then let's go to a custom SD four point and then kind of a dashed or something like that. All right, so let's just say hypothetically was supposed to be that large. And then we have the blank space down there for the bar code and all that other info, and then we'll move this over here a bit. All right, if you want to put an area for the stamp, you could do that as well. Rectangle tool. And then you can just said the border there, the stroke toe one point black, and you could do one of these Custom like straight hash, for example, is a pretty effective one art. So we've got that in there, and then just do a type tool click and drag over on the side here. So name address here. This is just a place holder that we could put there. So we've got most of our content. We just need this custom illustration in the back. Right. So we've got this here. I'm gonna do a preview. All right, So this is looking get so far for some consistency Art festival. This is really the graphic they'll be seeing. And then this is what they'll be seeing when they pick it out. The mail, depending on what side they pick it up. But once I does have to have that address, of course. But we're missing that custom illustration that we have in the example. All right, So how do we do that? We'll go ahead and go to illustrator. Go to file new. And if you want to think in terms of your design, like what proportion? From with height, it should be. You can type that in there. So you six inches by four inches and then click OK for this example and just goto file, place and navigate to the support files, go to projects images and select this work. Says sunset. If you want to use my example, I would say preferable. You have your own photo that you want to trace over. So I'm gonna show you how to do this. Though you click place clicking, let go. It's a bit large, some of the control minus to zoom out or command minus on the Mac. And then I'm gonna click and drag to resize that like so I am a zoom in. And so how you do this is you definitely want to bring up the layers panel in Illustrator, So just get a window, then layers. It works a little bit differently than Photoshopped, but basically it's object Korean. So right now we just have a linked file, and that's pretty much it. So what you want to do to create this illustration? If you got a file open and open up street lights, that's the placed illustrator file that we have in a project. The example. This is just something I did quickly, just tracing over that image, right, deciding what to include in the image, what colors, and it's really about simplifying and style izing it because obviously don't want to do every single Hugh and ever single value and everything in every single shape. It's about simplifying it and deciding what to include in that design. So if you're following along with this example, what you would want to do is create a new layer down here and then use the Pentagon's very straight oriented, like you could just click, click, click and drag 100 on the same layer. And then again, if we want to reset that angle, we gotta click the most recent one again. So click it now it resets the angle. All right, so you go all the way around. Think that's to curbing. Click it and reset the angle again any time you want to reset that angle, he had a reset click, the most recently click past. So for time's sake, I'm not going to go through all over this, obviously. But I'll just show you really quick. I just had this here, all right, that has a white Phil, obviously. So we do want to make that black, or you can make it what? Or blue or Red or what everyone dio. But that's just one shape, and I wouldn't have no stroke. All right said that to none. All right, So then you do a new layer and create another object. Or like you could maybe trace around this, right? So most of this is gonna be the pen tool for these lines. You could use the shape for some of these things like a rounded rectangle there and just rotated a little bit. Skew it. But with these lines here, you could just go to the pen tool. And instead of using a fill, you can actually just use a stroke there. Just go click, click, click, and then you got one. You could hit escape, and then you've got that there as well. And if you don't want to adjust that background, just lock it. Click this lock right there, and that way you can't select it or move it. See, I can't move that backgrounds there. And then you hit the icon later to see the before and after. So as you work on it, you'll begin to see all the different shapes. So that's a really time consuming process. But you can see my example here that I drew you just had. This is a shape here and see, I just have default layers over there. This is a shape, all right, This is a shape that's a shape, And then these air just right there. So all that is a shape for press control Z or commands on the Mac. It brings it back together. So create some kind of custom illustration, and then goto file place after you save as illustrator file dot ai file. Place it into your design here. So if I click and drag this, see this is on the top. Don't put your grating on the top, and by default you can't see through it, right, So you need to goto object effects. And then she is one of these, like transparency, for example, and then where you got basic blending. It's kind of like the Blair blending mode in Photoshop. So if I had normal, that's the default. You can't see that design underneath, so what you need to do is go to multiply if you want, or you can do screen. It's not gonna work with this example overlay, So that's pretty interesting what it did there. A soft light. So it's adjusting how it's blending with the layer below it. So I did multiply, hit, okay and it has my custom illustration. I drew an illustrator, saved as illustration placed it in the background. Then you put this grating on top and then adjust the blending motor that Grady in. So the illustration shows through and the great it's consistent with the circle on the front as well. So once you create your illustration, go ahead and place it in, I'll show you My example is just the street lights would go to file place and then street lights are so many. Do is I'm not gonna embedded inside this and you click it over here so doesn't bed inside anything. So I can still see this greedy int and this little bit large me just control shift, click and drag the corner there, right click over it Display performance, high quality displayed. And so we'll just move this. Something like that actually needs to be above there. All right, Something like that. We want this in the background. The right. So object arrange. Send it back. Now we can't see it. So that's why we go to the Grady int and again good object effects, transparency. And you could bring the transparency down if you want but I think the blending mood looks better with the example. Set it multiply or you could try screen. Try overlay. I'll do overlay for this example. Click. OK, and then there we go. So if you have your postcard done with your original vector artwork, you've got your branding. Got your photo with the photo shop and effect using the illustrator pattern. Just go ahead and go to file export and then say that I must say this is postcard example to from lesson save export. And there we go postcard example to from lesson. There's our postcard We created Museum out here. Here we go. All right, Hope you learned a lot. Let me know if you have any questions by posting discussion board. If you want to post this in the discussion board as an image, you can also go to file export and then set a pdf Just go down here where it says Jay Peg or PNG, and you can export So fitted J Peg, for example, Hit, save and just do all right and I hit Export. I'll show you what it looks like. Ah, here's postcard example to from Lesson. There's the first image and then postcard example to from lesson. Then you could embed him as images in the course discussion for feedback. Thanks a lot. 7. Graphic Design for Beginners Series Conclusion: congratulations on completing a graphic design hero course.
