Hi and welome to my new Skillshare Class Fun with Watercolor Splashes!

I just love to draw in procreate, but I also love the authentic look of a real painting. So why not combine those two?

In this class I will teach you my way of creating 4 lovely and colorful projects with a realistic watercolor feel. I want to show you that you can do a lot with just a few brushes and use them creatively, think beyond them and just explore there are so many other uses for them. Just let go of perfectionism and have fun exploring them. You can start out with some easy shapes en from there on put in some color and start with the coloful magic of watercolor. Be warned because it’s highly addictive. 

I will provide a special watercolorcanvas which is realy important to get a realistic and non digital feel and also I share a very small brushset. You can find them in the class project section. Make sure you are in your browser to download them and not in the skillshare app.

You also will be needing an Ipad with procreate and a pressure sensitive stylus.

1. Intro: Hi, and welcome to my new skill share clause. My name is Brenda Bucher and I'm from the Netherlands. In this class, I will be teaching you how you can create just lovely paintings like this with just a few brushes. Just think beyond the brushes you already have. For this class, I will be providing you a water color texture paper, which is very important. And I will be providing a small brush it just as well. But you can use any other brush you like, just if you think beyond them. So do you want to learn more from me on how I create this one? Well, step into the class and I will teach you, see you in class. 2. Importing Brushes, Canvas and Colorswatch: So the first thing you wanna do is to get all the brushes and the Confucius and the color swatch, which I provide with class. For that, you go to your browser, go to the class. And there you will find projects and resources. And normally I will get them here on the side, but I couldn't manage it today, so I will look into that later. But now you can find your color swatch and your watercolor canvas and the brush set. So for that, let's start with the brush set. There you can go to your three dots. And there you can choose exports and open in procreate. And it will import right away. And you can find it in your brushes. So open any countries now. And it will appear at the top one of your brush sets. And I will walk you right through it. If you already got some brushes for me, we'll see some familiar brushes. It's almost the same as the sketchy doodle in clause, but this one has a dry ink, opaque brush extra. And I edit the splitter for salt brush extra. If you already have the other brushes, just only take the dry ink opaque and a splitter for salt and move them to the other ones so you don't get huge lot of brushes. So that's for the brushes. And also for your procreate Canvas. Click on it. It will take a couple of seconds. Thank you. Type three dots again. Exports you can choose here also export to procreate. And your came first will be importing right away. And you can find it in the upper left corner of your gallery. Dare issue new important procreate Canvas. I will walk you shortly through it. The top layer, there is a group of textured layers. Please leave it like this. And also you can draw on any layer beneath it. And if you remove the watercolor canvas, it will it will look off. Leave me. These are all the text does she need to provide to look as real as possible? So have fun with this one. And I'm also providing you color swatch with a very small one. It works the same way. Click on the three dots. Export. Search for your procreates. It will import right away. And your swatches, you can open any Canvas you like. And you Swatches can be found all the way at the bottom of your color swatches. It's just a very simple one. We only be using a couple of color. So here you are. So let's get started. 3. Upgrade your Background Splashes: So let's start out with just a step. The background ink splash. This will be the main part of this clause. And for that one we are going to make a full opacity and full size. Just make one splash in black. And if you make another one, it will be the same size, the same splash, only. Rotate it. Well, let's start out with one. And I can make it a little bit bigger by making adjustments to the size and replace it. So I like it here. But I don't want to have something black. Mostly I start with black because it might to-go color. And for this one, Now, let's just select this one. I clicking Select here. Make this one invisible again by clicking the layer. And if you can see from a distance, maybe perhaps you see there are little stripe marks for your selection. But there's also a little bit of the shape visible. And somewhere in between you can see the stripe marks. Where did the splash wasn't in its full opacity. So there are where there was lighter color. You see also a little bit of the marks, so you can play a lot of color down there. What are we going to do now is make a new layer on top of this. And now we're going to choose some colors and make our own splash, but only exactly in the same shape as the large splash was. So let's choose a color. Let's go to my color palettes. This one. For instance, I like those fresh colors like blue and green and red, pinkish red and orange. So let's start with pinkish red wall. And let's choose the watercolor scribble brush and make this a large size also now I'm only going to swipe over the, over the splash with the pink one at the bottom end, orange one at the top, one single swipe. So I don't lift my pencil, I don't do anything. We suppress pressure sensitivity. So you can see how the splash was in its original form and shape. And I do the same thing with the orange at the top layer and just go over it and mix those colors. So this was the original splash. It has a little bit darker edges. It has some light area here, some night area here. And now I wasn't going to play with it. So I think this can be a little more ink with this brush, I can do more pressure around the edges have contempt and depth to even darker color again, because my scribble watercolour brush is on multiply. And now I'm going back to my PINK1 again. I'm going to make this a little darker. And you see also run the edges. It's a little bit darker. Also on the lighter area when I tap and I can get more polar, but not as much as I get in these colors because it has a little bit stretch stripes from the selection. But I think I could get a lovely color by now. And maybe this can be a little bit more orange. Yeah, I like it like this. And now I'm going with the same tool, my current brush, and I'm going to smash, splash it little bit. So I'm going to blend colors. And now I can also lighten these areas. You see where I have the darkened edges, I can smudge them away. Don't get all your texture texture smashed away. Yes, some little bits. I cannot change the shape of the splash because it's own selection. When I want to do that, I want to make sure I've got the colors were a onetime, get rid of the selection. And now I can smudge outside these lines so I can pull a little bit color out if I want to, and I can pull a little bit of white in there. So I can also play with that. And then I can make some bleeds into the lighter areas if i want. So, so from one brush, one shape, you can get a lot of different shapes. You can also make adjustments to the shape by distort. And with Warp. So you can make changes with that. So when I want to move my splash in uniform style, then I can move it all around the paper, but it doesn't change its size or shape. When I go to distort, I can make somewhere it splashes out of it. So with one brush you can make a lot of splashes. You can also warp it. So when you have to fit it into a circle, perhaps can make this changeable. And then you have to add challenged mesh. Then you can make even more adjustments to the shape. So then you can play around with the shape. By now you're not going to make changes to the 2D harder edges. So the specifics of each shape will remain in this drawing. I don't want to resize or reshape it for this, but I wanted to show you what's all possible with just one splash. So I think I'm going to leave this a little bit and I'm going to so much and play and have some fun around hair. And now I'm going to check if it's about in the middle uniform again. Eyeball it to bits. You see there's lighter pixels in here, but the head shape is in the middle now. And for them, you can write something on top. If you want to. Some fun. I love to write with my dry brush. And let's choose white for now. And let me check the size. I think this one is a little too big, so I can go until 19. Just write splash. And when I'm going downward, I have more pressure. When I'm going upward or psi word sideward, I don't have as much pressure. So litre pressure, more pressure. You just make some funny letters out of it. Because it's only mu layer, I can remove it. And when I want to have some extra fun around it, I'm going to duplicate this layer. And on the layer underneath, I choose for black. So I do selection, selects, choose black, and choose Fill layer. And now my layer on the knees is black and I'm going to put this on overlay. And why would I do that? I will let you see in a minute, remove it a little bit. And now you can see it darkens all the color underneath. If I added on black, it would be black. But now when blood is on overlay, and if I zoom in, you see the orange is a darker orange and the pinkish is a very dark pinkish, almost red. So now when I want to change the splash underneath it, so like if I go back to my splash layer, let's see you saturation and brightness choose layer. Now I can play with the colors on the nice. So for instance, if I want to change my colors, you see like this and maybe a little bit pregnant. Now, I don't have to change the delay or on the air underneath to White's word Splash. Now, they change along with it because it's on an overlay layer. So that's why I like this much to use colors in overlayer, in overlay. And now we can choose to make even more splashes around it by let me see. What if we want to make some water bowls in it? We can use this same brush for it, this splash brush, but then make some smaller size. So I'm going to make a new layer on top of the splashes. Choose to set this also an overlay. And now we're going to play with some splashes. You know, remember, overlay with black. It may darker. So Nico and now we can make water pools that are a little bit darker. So you can use the same brush to make some darker water bowls, or in this case, ink pools. And that you can also see much. So if you don't like the hard lines, you can smash, smash it a little. But make sure you're going to leave some darker edges because it will be looking more real. And we can also do this with whites. I always create new layer for that. Well, if I don't forget, it's easier because when afterwards you were thinking, I don't like the black ones or I don't like the white ones. You can easily remove them. So make new layer settlement overlay and choose white. Same brush, yes, choose whites. And now we can make actual water pools. You see like this. And mostly I think these are a little bit too hard, but you can also play with the opacity, opacity on it. So just for some soft water pool lines, you can make adjustments to this. So now you will have an actual watercolor splash, looking like real watercolor. And so you can make different shapes, sizes with just one brush. So I think that's ideal. So you don't have a very large Brexit or no, I don't have a lot a lot of brushes. I think. I don't think I needed them all. I just like some rather small brush it with less brushes. But if you have enough creativity or enough knowledge of the program, you can do a lot of it. So we can play alone with some other fancy things. Like, what if I want to edit some salt into it? Well, I choose an overlay again in white. And this is a brush I will add to the brush sets its default brush. Let me check its own spray brains and it's called Splitter. And these are normally white splotches, but watts, if we do that. And a small size, well it's too small, a little bigger. And create some splashes with it. Again. These are a little too hard for me. Hear me tipping and dubbing. And now I'm going to decrease the opacity. It looks like you have a little bit of salt on real, actual Walter paper, watercolor. So it's sucks up the ink. So you get some wide splashes in it. And I think that's looking gorgeous. So with just a few brushes, you can get an unique Encke, kind of form. And you know, remember this brush I used. And remember this picture. I am going to group these all selected by swiping to the right. Group it all. And just pocket on the way so I'll make it invisible. What if I do this with just the pink one? Let me see, where's the brush? Here it is the ink splash. Remember the first one we did at its largest size? What if I do it? Own just one pink one. You see it's a lovely shape and it's a lovely splatter. But let me see the difference. The splash is way more fancier, may way more interesting to look at than just this plane one. It's not wrong. But you can do a lot of more fun with it. So I hope you liked this one. Let's go to the next one. 4. Splashing Simple Fantasy Watercolor Flower: For this next one, we're going to draw something. And for that, I created dry ink brush, but then with no texture in it. So it will be fully opaque, but still has its own forms and shapes and pressure sensitivity. I'm going to draw a flower, which is a non-existing flower just from memory. But I will keep my hands of my, my pencil on the, on the canvas the whole time while drawing. So I'm going to shape this a little bit. Now mind words on the paper. So just some overlapping shapes. And close it at the bottom again. Now, i'm going to make this even more bits of the size like in the middle at the top because I want to have a stem underneath it. So now I have this whole drawing. I'm going to select all these little stages areas. By selecting, choosing automatic. Make sure you can see it clearly. Swipe a little bit to the right in each area you see here, which you want to have you color in. I want here also my color. And the fun part about this one is it will select only the leaves of the flower and the black lines aren't selected. And that's something to keep in mind for later on because that's what we're going to use for this picture. Now, I selected all of these. And you see all the areas are now selected. And all the rest says has those striping marks. I'm going to make a new layer and put it underneath the line work. And now I'm going to use the same brush again. So I go back to my background splash and chosen a color to my liking. And in this case, it will be this reddish pink again, because I loved the reddish pink. And now I'm going to make the size a little bit smaller. Just about. I can't see what it says because it's black on the background and I don't have my glasses on. I'm sorry. Now I'm having the same brush and the pinkish red. And I'm going to tap, end up just to make some funny splashes out of it. I think there's 11 too dark. So perhaps just one larger splash on top. And maybe with a smudge tool with the watercolor scribble brush. I can smudge away and I can drag a little bit of the white inside. So I can create some funny movement in this flower. I like those little dots here. And perhaps I want to create some more dots on top, a little bit more wide. So I'm going to create a new layer on top. Remember from the first lesson we did in this class, so I put them on overlay and perhaps make it a little lighter by choosing whites to my brush. Some ink splashes. Yes, that's lovely. And now I think this one is too hard. No, but I can use that one. And that's also nice. Let's smudge these whites little bit more. Here. This one can be switched. Their, I think I'm ready like this. Let's see if we get a selection of and get rid of the line work. Yes, I liked it a lot. And actually, this one doesn't need to be here because these are off the leaf behind, this one in front. So I'm going to swatch this a little bit by going to the pink layer because I want to do pink layer and I have to Much days a little bit away, make it smaller. And if you go over days again, it doesn't matter. You can always draw in some wide lines again. I think this was waveform, so this one is also this leaf. And make sure if you did it, you type and depth so you don't see the lines anymore and you don't see any irregular or too much regular shapes left. So you can see here, I went overboard. So take my Eurasia to o, go to my ink opaque brush again, omega dot. And with my eraser tool, I can easily erase within these lines. So it's just a simple thing you can do with the same brush. And now I choose my black again. And I'm going to my white opaque one and create a lovely stem on the knees. Just little pressure, more pressure, little pressure. And I think it's a new piece of art already. Just very easily. And we can play along, makes some other splashes, like some black dots. Perhaps on the flower. Always on a new layer. I'll always stay underneath the line-drawing, whether it's there or whether it isn't. But I think it's looking like a window painting, shadow painting. Let's make those dots. Do I have selected here? I already have selected it. And perhaps some larger ones with the pink. Maybe it can be more because it's dark one. It stays dark and I think it looks funny. So you can do that with any shape you like. Think of. Maybe perhaps you can do a whale in this one. If you remember, my first day watercolor class, will be funny or fish with this little line work or flower with some nice stems in it. You can do it. It's like Cheryl painting. So the only thing I really don't like that much is that every now and then, I think these lines are too sharp. So I can also play with that by selecting this. Go to my pink layer again. Choose my smudge brush, choose the watercolor scribbled brush. Small size. Just go and play. Opened up. You. Just make these lines a little bit more wobbly, so not to consistent. And I think it will look awesome like that, which you can play to your own liking. For me, there are no rules and just play well to whatever I like. Remember. It's always about having fun. I don't like there is in line existing here. That's because of the outline which was selected, I think. So makes sure from there on, I move a little bit inwards, not too much out. And I could play with this for hours. Because I like to blend colors and play with it. Typing by dipping, and just create some fun shapes. So It's a little bit abstract, it's a little bit fun. It's a little bit about splashing and well, play by your own rules and create something fun. I think that would look lovely. I think we're ready, but I think we can still play with some colors. So let me see if I can select this one and add in a little bit of orange on top. So I'm going to create a new layer, makes selection. So if I don't like it, I can easily drop it away. So let's get to Maya watercolor scribble brush and bring in some color. Just some orange linens on orange. Look. There are a lot more fun things happening right away. Just to make it more interesting. Just some little touch. And yes, you can also do this with your, you saturation and brightness. But I think this is more fun and more of the blending to do it yourself. So it's not as pinkish anymore. And create a lot of pink. Again. No, that's too much. I think. Let me see how this looks. Yeah. I think this looks more interesting to me than it was. Maybe a little less play with the opacity of it. Just a hunch of orange and I think we're there. Yep. This is how I like. It's just a small color change and it's more to my liking. So I hope you like it to see you in the next one. 5. Create a Dreamy Watercolor Feather: So for this one, I'm going to make creative watercolor Fenner, so much sketch is very simple. My sketch is something like this. And some feathery shape. I think this will be lovely as fetter, just a simple shape. And we're going to make this a multiply one, lower the opacity, and create a new layer underneath it. So that's where we're going to select free ends. Now I'm going to trace about the shape somewhere. So, and for now, I want to play with my blue one and select my background's ink splash again in underneath the sketch layer. Maybe let's lock the sketch layer so I count be accidentally on top of it. And I'm going to make some lovely watercolor shapes. Make sure my lower part, because mostly the federal is dark. And then I'm going to make some splashes of green. And then I'm going to blend them a little bit with my watercolor scribble, blush, brush, and just make some splashing. And having these colors, just create some lovely colors out of this. Dragging some whites to decide because they're otherwise too much color. And make sure you leave some textures and some bleed did accidentally happens. I push too hard, but I can use this as a watercolor splash. I think this looks lovely now. And on top of that, I'm going to create a darker, darker version of this. The middle of the feder, do it with my dry ink brush and get rid of the selection first, I'm on a new layer on top. Yes, I'm going to set more pressure at the bottom part and lightly pressure at the top. So, oh, and I have to choose my dry ink. So Schorsch, just one stripe. And I'm going to blend this as well. It's not that I'm going to blend it directly into the scholar. I just going to merge it, smudge it out a little bit. And if I'm okay, then I'm going to merge those layers. So just to make sure I keep these. Textures on the nice, it's in the right way. Just taking a little bit of this color outward, a little bit darker. And let those colors bleed a little bit. Make sure For now we stay within the shape of the feder. And because it's on top of the color on the knees, it's a perfect matching. You can keep the textures of both layers apart so you can play with both textures. And I think this will look like now. I think it could look like this in real watercolor. And perhaps here also little bit of smudging. And I think I'm okay with Intel it looks now. And now I'm going to merge these two. And let's have some fun with it. Now. We can make a layer on top of them. No, I'm going to start with more fun on this layer again. Because what can we do now from here, I can go to my smudge tool, make it a little bit smaller. And I'm going to make some lovely suggestion of little fetters. But you can always see underneath these fetters some little hair-like strands. I think this looks lovely. I can also play with the outline. Let's get rid of my sketch for now. Because I don't want those hard lines. Just by little tipping and dubbing. Just make sure it's not consistent. It has to be like bleeding watercolor. Make some happy little excellence. Dare. And that's lovely soft feather. I think we can play with just some lovely watercolor pools on top of them. So on the new layer on top of them. Now I'm going to do my black overlay. And maybe I select this also because when you want to do another background and you have overlaid on also on outside of the fader. It will come onto your background and I don't want it so for that to be sure because I don't know if I want to do or write something. Let's select this one so it only will stay on there on the federal. So let's create some multi-color poles. I have to choose black again for my ink splash. That's too dark. Too dark. I don't want it to be only on the middle, so I choose my outer sides. Like this one is just now coming from. I hope you can see this little dot. It just happens because of the splash. So it's just play a little bit. It's hard to see with all these lines, but I can see what happens if you zoom in. I'm going to create another layer on top of it and choose Overlay also. And choose my white. Mostly I do them with black and white. I liked it a lot. It's the way on top. So I have some lovely splashes unselect and now I can see what I did. You see here is a lovely white spots. I think it's too hard. I can make it bleed a little bit. In the overlay layer. And there I like it. I think it's yeah, lovely looking more for an extra abstract kind of fatter. I can also blends this a little bit more. It's much too, not too big. Just play typing and Deming. And perhaps we can let some lights come over here. So I go to my dry ink brush again. Make it a little bit smaller. Zoom out a bit. Make new layer on top. Always do everything on a new layer, can always make adjustments to it. I think this directly gives it more dimension to it. I want to smudge it. Let me try. Maybe not, maybe I do. Just see what happens. As much it too much. Now, I think I'm going to leave it like this. I think it looks awesome. So when, I mean, I think it's looks lovely. And perhaps we can play also a little bit more with some here. Yet again, salts. I'm blonde, leaky noted. Spray paints. Yea, there it is. I think I don't choose overlay for now. I'm going to just make some wide and then play with the opacity of it. Let me see what that does. Give us a little bit. Yep. I think I'm done. I think I like it a lot like this. I hope you enjoy it too, and I hope you'll have fun. See you in the next one. 6. Fun with Watercolor Lettering: Using these kind of watercolor is also fun for your lettering. So for instance, you can also do this with a font. So if you're not that into lettering, don't worry. I'm going to choose my littering brush pen and type. The word fam. Getting, push harder for thicker lines. And when you go down, you push harder and when you go sideways or a little less hard. So it's not difficult tend writing I'm going to do, I'm going to do just lose letters, just writing the word fun goals. I think these lessons should be fun. And create something like this. Little figure harder. You don't have to be very difficult. Just have fun and doesn't have to be perfect. It's almost in the center. I think it's okay. And we do this the same way we did before. So select this one, create a new layer on top, and make this infeasible. Now you can see the real shapes of these letters. And we did the pinkish 12 times. So now it's time for the blue and green again. And let's play with the water color, inks pleasures. And you see the more and more dark day gets. And let's choose the green one for our upper part. Yes. And let's blend them a bit. Make sure we're leaving the textures and little bit goes. That's why we tipped in depth. Leave some coloring behind and some splashes. Make sure you covered everything with a little bit of color. So here I have to put in a little bit more color. I want to put in some more blue here. Well, that's nice. Some happy little accidents happen and I liked it a lot. So I let's leave the one hair. Merck blended a little bit. Yes. Let it come to life. And green, more green. Very small here. So this is what alike. Let me see, let me see. I'm going to leave this here because we go into needed some while later. And for this one, I am going to make another layer on top, put it on overlay. Choosing my black again. And I am going to my watercolor scribble brush. And I'm doing the outlines with some darker color, maybe a little less hard. So change the opacity bits and 70%, that will be fine. And you don't see it anywhere because we're your colors are lighter. You won't see as much from the outlines. You don't have to be very precise. Just step and dab a little bit around the outer lines. And if you have a hard heart, a chair, it's OK. We're going to smudge that anyway. I think on the knees little bit dark is lovely. And now I'm going to smudge this a little bit. And to make it a little bit more soft, pencil tapping a dubbing. I can make new layer on top of that again. Put it also on overlay. Still holding my black and choosing my watercolor ink splash again at smaller size, let's say 12%. And I can make some ink splashes, again, just to darken it and make little bit of dots. And mostly I go over it again without also overlay layer. Choosing my white. Sometimes I do a little bit harder, darker, and I go mostly all of it. So I could get a lot of differences in the coloring because I find, I find it always too hard. I'm going to lower the opacity bit is one. So about 50%. Yes, I think I like it like this. And for now we can create some lovely highlights on top of that and go to my dry ink brush. Again. I'm only new layer. Let me check the size. I think I like it. I only going to take away the left part because my son is coming from up here. So the left side and a Zika part of the letters are only getting my highlights. So i'm going to one stripe and three dots because I think that's looking like fun. And I want this to be about fun. And we can play some more PI creating another layer, get rid of the selection function. And let's do black outline. And for that we're going to do fine tip. On the new layer. New layer. Yes. Let me check the size. Yeah. I like this one. It's about what size it is. 202020. And I'm going to make some outlines, but I'm not going to do this like very close to the letters because I don't like that. I just wanted to make then vibrant and sparkling. So let me check the see these lovely colours. I liked it so much. This makes me happy. So we're going to make some quick lines, just if you dip my sketchy Dual Link loss, you know these. So in selection again because I taped the undo. So just some little funny outlines approximately, like where you want to have the nine. So go on purpose just outside of the normal line and make them cross the other lines so they will sparkle, fun and brightness. And now they're already funny and vibrant and very energetic. And so let's create some funny scribbles around debts. And maybe some swirls. Do I like that? Maybe some small one here and some small home there? Nope, I don't like that. Maybe some one here? Yes. You see sometimes you have to scribble and scratch and play around. And now I think I want some splashes even more. And this I am going to do on the backgrounds. So new layer, all the way down and splashing. Let me see what size they are. Yes. I'm having more fun right now. The EU. And perhaps, perhaps on a new layer two, all the way on top.
