1. Class Introduction: Hello, and welcome to my class. What happens when
communication fails? See the importance of
communication skills. Whether you are an employee, an entrepreneur or a politician, nothing great you
can ever achieve without excellent
communication skills. In this class, I have put
in efforts to teach formal, informal communication
skills in as theatrical and as
dramatic manner as possible to make
learning interesting. Let's say in your
office your colleague says, Would you do this for me? You reply as, What's
your problem? Why are you bothering
the or you can reply as, I understand that falls within your scope of
responsibilities, but I'm happy to support
where it makes sense. Let's say your boss logs you some urgent work right
before it's time for you to log out and he says
that do it, it's urgent. And you reply as,
Whose office is this? Am I your slave or you can
formally reply as, Sir, my day concludes in no time, but I shall prioritize this
first thing in the morning. Now imagine this God forbid
you're going for a surgery, and you found a surgeon in a
casual outfit and he says to you as Yo man, you
came for surgery. I really needed this for the
last installment of my flat. The doctor cannot behave and
talk to you in that tone. Let's assume you
meet your boss in an elevator and say, Hey, Bossy, your bald head is
shining like anything, or you are in a court of law, and you say to the magistrate, Hey, Jagie Was dude? Even if you are the prime
minister of that country, you are for sure
going behind bars. Thanks to the formal
communication that world is a
better place now, thanks to formal communication, thanks to professionalism, and thanks to Skillshare for such interesting
classes on the
2. Class Project: Project of this class, I've
given an informal letter. You need to convert it
into a formal letter and some frizzle some
informal vocabulary, which you need to find the
formal appropriate words for on the best.
3. Interview Responses: Formal vs Informal: There's an interview
going on for the post of a social
media manager, and we will see how
a formal reply and an informal reply
with formal tone and informal tone can make a
difference to the interviewer. We'll be asking
questions and we'll see what could be the
formal answer to that with a formal behavior and
an informal answer with an informal we'll just
start. Good morning. Thank you for coming in today. Could you please start by
telling me a bit about yourself and your experience
in social media management? Good morning, and thank
you for having me here. I have a bachelor's
degree in marketing and an extensive experience in
online digital branding. To the past several years, I have helped individuals
and businesses grow their online
presence by crafting tailored content strategies and analyzing audience
engagement metrics, selling social media
platforms such as Instagram,
Facebook, and so on. Oh, hey, so basically
I live online. I breathe hash tags and
snack on analytics. I've been doing social media
stuff for a few years now. You name a platform and I
probably made memes for it. I run campaigns that
made people laugh, comments and convert, not converge into
Christianity or Islam, but into a clime. I defend brands in the
comment sexono family. If social media was a sport, I would be an Olympic champion. What strategies have
you successfully implemented to grow
brands online presence? Certainly, one of the
most important strategies I have ever implemented is
a content calendar system. Aligned with brand goals and platform specific
best practices. Additionally, I have
leveraged data analytics to monitor engagement and identify
top performing contents, and then replicated the
success with similar topics. The key aspect of my strategy is audience engagement
and responding to the comments and messages promptly to build loyalty,
authenticity, and trust. Oh, strategy, yeah. You mean the secret
recipe for magic? Well, first, I made
content calendar, and then I stopped algorithm to figure out the
best time to post. I'm a master in posting with witty captions and
killer Emojis. Alright. Social media
trends evolve quickly. How do you stay updated? Stay ahead in this rapidly
evolving landscape. I make it point to
follow industry leaders, subscribe to the newsletters, webinars and conferences
on digital marketing. I also actively test new platform features to understand the potential
for my clients. I have been recently
exploring threads. I treat social media
updates like breaking news. If Instagram sneezes, I
have the tissue ready. I follow all social media gurus, I've been recently digging into threads to see whether
it's worth me high. Why do you believe you're the right fit for this position? I believe having
the right fit for this position because I combine strong strategic mindset with hands on experience
across diverse platform. I understand how to align
content with brand identity, how to engage winning
fully with audience, and how to translate data
into accable insight. Why me? Because I'm
going to work here. Like, thank you for your time. We will be in touch soon.
Thank you very much. I appreciate the opportunity, and I look forward
to hearing from. Thanks for the chitchat.
Now what's next? Tell me, please. Tell me. Where are you going?
Where are you going?
4. Formal vs Professional Communication: Now we'll see what's
the difference between a formal communication and
professional communication. Formal communication
refers to acting and behaving with the
highest level of attitude, whereas professional
communication refers to acting in a
business like manner. In formal communication,
we use proper grammar, wrong words, and avoid
contractions and slangs. Professional communication
emphasizes the clarity on antici uses business
jargons like win win, the paradigm shift,
bottom line, and so on. In formal communication, we use courteous tones and focuses more on the facts
rather than opinions. In professional
communication, we use polite, positive and neutral tones. Formal communication
with the purpose is to give order
and instructions. It has many purposes like
informing, requesting, persuade
5. Why Passive Voice is Formal?: Passive voice is
considered formal because it focuses on action, the results and not the doer. For example, we won the
case. The law was passed. Now, who passed the law, which government, which
political party doesn't matter. It's of a lesser
importance than the law, it was passed, that
it was passed. Because in formal talks, the context is more
important than who did it. Secondly, passive voice
avoids personal bias. Let's say John made the mistake. Now, now it's like a
blame game, right? So we are blaming somebody
for that mistake. Instead of saying
that, the mistake which was made has
been now corrected. Now that's a more formal and
professional way of saying. Please remember,
we need to be more professional and not personal
in formal communication. Passive voice is conventionally used in certain formal fields. For example, solution
was heated at 100 degrees Celsius and not the chemist heated the
solution, not the chemist. The solution was heated, and we've got the result. Its emphasize on research and
findings and not actually
6. Why Phrasal-Verbs are Informal?: Bs are combination of
verb plus preposition, sometimes adverb, which
together form a new meaning. For example, give up, means to surrender, look into, means to investigate, find out, means to discover, and go
on, means to continue. Wsel orbs have idiomatic
meaning not only that, some phrasal verbs
have multiple meaning, which is why they are
considered informal because it does not exactly clarify what they want to say. For example, take off
means to remove something. He took off his jacket. Take off also means
to leave the ground. The flight took off at
6:00 A.M. In the morning. Take off also means a sudden rise in a
career or a success. For example, his career took
off after that grand team. Now, take off has
multiple meaning. We'll see some of
the most as works. Pickup means to lift. He picked up my suitcase and pickup also means to
collect somebody. The cab came to pick me up. Backup means to
support somebody, she backed me up in my trouble. And backup also
means an extra copy. We took the backup of the
important D documents. Run into. It means to meet
somebody accidentally. I ran into my old friend
in the mall, set up. Set up means to organize
or arrange something. He set up a meeting
with the client. Set up also means
to frame something. This all was just a set up, and setup also
means to establish. She set up her own
business in Canada. Come up. Come up means to
appear or become available. The opportunities came up there. Come up also means to approach. She came up to me
after the class.
7. Different Letter Formats: Now we will see the format of a formal semi formal
and informal letters and how important
is the greeting, the salutation, the ending. For example, let's say
you're writing a letter to the Commissioner of Income Tax and you're starting with Hey do. Now imagine irrespective
of the content of the matter and your honesty that you are proving
in the letter, su this greeting is going
to not be in your favor. So it's very important to learn what greetings to be used. In a letter that I have
given in the project also, that is very informal and you need to convert it into formal. So we'll see the first layer as the greeting.
How do you grate? We are going to
divide into formal, semifmal and informal letters. Dear sir or Madam. Now, this is a very
formal greeting that you can use in a
formal communication. So it is a formal
greeting. Dear Peter. Now, you're taking
name of somebody, but still you are giving them some respect with the
help of the word. I will go and go into a
semi formal category. If you say hi mom, hi dad. That's a completely
informal greeting that you're writing to
your family and friends. This is a opening statement, and you need to
think whether it's a semi formal or informal. I'm writing a response to. Now, I'm writing response to you are becoming very formal. You are giving the reason and the purpose for this letter, and also why should
they read it. It's a very formal starting and then we'll consider as
a formal communication. I'm afraid I won't be able to. Now I'm afraid it's
actually giving a sort of um informal sense, but then I'm afraid
I won't be able. So you're pre
informing somebody. Again, it will considered into a semi formal category,
opening statement. Thanks for the parcel,
I just arrived. This is completely informal. You're writing to somebody
for the acceptance of the cast or acknowledging that you have
received the parcel. Now, these are the
closing statements. I look forward to your reply. This formal business
jargon that has been used, it will go under a
formal letter category. I'm looking forward
to getting back. Now looking forward is okay, so formal, but getting back to. Now, this phrase
actually is giving a sense that it is not completely formal or
completely informal, it's semifmal closing statement. I can't wait to
see you next week. So it's a closing statement, a completely informal
closing statement. Yours faithfully when you do not know the name of the
person you're addressing. You are first time saying
that have faith in me. Since we don't know each
other, have faith in me. That's yours faithfully. You sincerely when you know
the name of the person, you can say you're
sincere. Kind regards. It's a semi formal closing
statement, kind regards. Lots of love lots of love, is a completely informal ending.
