About This Class

In my new class, I’ll guide you step by step through creating a sweet and vibrant heart-shaped lollipop food illustration using alcohol-based markers.

We’ll start by talking about the materials you'll need — from markers and paper to additional tools that can enhance your illustrations and help you get better results.

Next, we’ll cover some essential marker techniques, including smooth gradients and tonal variation. I’ll also show you how to use a white pencil and gel pen for highlights and finishing touches.

Then, we’ll go through the complete drawing process — from a light pencil sketch to a fully colored and detailed candy illustration.

This class is perfect for total beginners, or anyone looking to try new techniques like creating shiny candy textures or simply relax and enjoy a fun creative process.

I’ll be using alcohol-based markers, but feel free to use your favorite tools — whether that’s watercolors, colored pencils, or a mix. You can even change the shape of the candy to match your own style! The goal is to experiment, enjoy the process, and create a sweet final result you’ll be proud of.

So grab your markers, and let’s get started!

1. Welcome to the Class!: Hello, and welcome to my class. I'm Anna Statenko an artist who loves creating suit and colorful illustrations. In this class, we will be sketching and coloring acute heart shaped lollipop using just five markers. I will guide you through every step from making a simple pencil sketch to blending colors, building volume, adding texture, and finishing the final details. You'll also learn a few beginner friendly marker techniques to help your candy look more realistic and vibrant. This class is perfect for beginners or anyone who wants to have fun and create a bright, cheerful candy illustration without needing a huge collection of supplies. So grab your markers, and let's get started. 2. Materials: For this class, we will need the following materials, five markers. I'm using light pink or you can take light red. Bright red, you can take also bright pink and three gray colors, three gray markers. One is C one, Cs three, and C five. Also, you will need a paper. This should be a smooth paper suitable for markers. For example, you can use a special marker paper or you can also go with bristle paper. I'm going to use sketchbook with a marker paper inside. If you don't have any of these papers, you can go even with office paper, for example. Be sure it is not a watercolor paper because watercolor paper absorbs a lot of pigment and a lot of ink, and also you should pay attention that this is a smooth paper, so paper without any texture. Also, we will need a pencil and an eraser. And I'm going to use white pencil, but you can go even with white pen if you prefer. 3. Marker Basics: Before we start, let's talk about markers. Markers can have different types of tips. This is, for example, a brush tip. As you can see, I can work like with a brush and I can create different lines. Also, we have a white tip or chisel tip. Chisel or white tip is good for creating sharp and defined edges. With a brush tip, you can create really expressive and artistic strokes. And we also have a ballet tip. It's also good for some details and to feel smaller areas. A, how should we work with markers to create a flat and even fill? As you can see, to get a smooth result, I'm keeping my hand moving in one steady motion without lifting the marker from the paper. Of course, if you want to show some texture, you can go like this. If you work with a white tip using strokes that overlap each other, you can also create an interesting effect. Next, let's explore what one single marker can do because with one marker, we can get different shades. And now I leave a small organ and fill it one more time. I need to wait a bit and again, a small step and fill it one more time. As you can see, we can also create some gradients, and one marker can have different shades. Now let's try to create a gradient with gray colors. At first, I'm taking the lightest gray. It is C one. Then I'm adding my medium gray. She's three, and C five. Now, I come back to my C three, and I want to blend them together here, and I come back to my C one and blend them here. This is how we create gradients with three colors. Now let's try to create a gradient with two colors. Now, I add my bright red. I come back to my light pink. And I want to blend. Again, I come back to my red light pink. This is how we create gradients with two colors. Also, in this course, I'm using a white pencil, and let me show you how it works. With the white pencil, we can lighten our marker and add some highlights. Also, optionally, you can also use white pen. It works brighter, but it's also really good for some highlights. And that's it. Now we can start with our sketch. 4. Sketching the Lollipop: So let's start our pencil drawing. First, I lightly mark the rough boundaries of the Cty. I'm using a very light pencil just enough to see the lines, but easy to erase later if needed. Then I sketch a simple heart shape. It doesn't have to be perfect. Also, you don't have to copy exactly my heart shape. Feel free to adapt it to your own style. Unique shape will add even more charm to your lollipop. Next, add a small stick underneath the heart. Keep the line soft and gentle. We will go over it properly later with markers. Now, using gnetted eraser, I gently remove any unnecessary lines. This helps keep the sketch clean and ready for coloring. Once you're happy with the basic sketch, you are ready to move on to the fun part coloring. 5. Coloring the Candy: Before I start working these markers, I want to lighten the pencil sketch using a needed eraser. This way, the graphite wants much when I apply the colors. Now I take my light pink marker and fill in the whole candy shape with a base layer. H. Using a broad tip, I apply a second layer with the same color. While the ink is still wet, I immediately add my bright red colour. Leaving some areas lighter to create highlights and to show where the candy stick is visible through the candy. Then I go back with light pink to soften the red and blend the colors together. Next, I add another layer of bright red to deepen the tone where it is needed. And again, blended gently with the light pink where I want a smoother transition. As you can see, I keep working with these two colors together. Layering and blending while the ink is still wet to achieve the softest and smoothest transitions. Now, I add some candy texture around the highlight. And once again, soften it using the light pink marker. With the bright red, I refine the shape of my candy, making the edges a little more defined and vivid and once again, adding some interesting details to the texture of the candy. Again, I come back to my bright red marker to deepen the tone of the candy and refine the shape even more. Step by step, I'm building up the tone of the candy. Then using the light pink, I soften and adjust the lightest areas to keep the highlights fresh and smooth. I add more bright red again and then soften and wash out the color with the light pink creating smooth transitions. I returned to the bright red to add more contrast and to emphasize the light areas on the candy. 6. Coloring the Stick: For the candy stick, which is shaped like a cylinder, we need to show its volume. First, I take my lightest gray C one and apply it to the stick. Then on the right side, I add C three to create a shadow. And blend it out with C one to make a smooth transition. Each time I use a darker gray, in my case, it is C three. I soften it with a lighter gray C one to create smooth transitions. 7. Adding Shadows: Now, I add a few shadows with gray on my hard candy. And then I soften them with a bright red. Now I have taken the darkest gray. It is C five in my case, and I want to define the darkest areas on the stick. I soften this color with a lighter gray color. C three. Also, I want to add some shadows on my hard candy, and I will soften this color with bright red. And light pink. Now, I'm analyzing my sketch and see if I want to add or improve something. Now, for example, I'm adding some texture with a bright red. And soften it with a light pink. When I add some gray color, I soften it also with lighter gray or with bright red color. 8. Adding Highlights: Now I take a white pencil. I'm using one from fiber castle, and I add the lightest area and highlights on the candy. You can also use a white gel pen if you prefer. If the highlights look too bright, I gently smind them with my finger to soften them. And if you feel you added too much white pencil, for example, no worries. You can simply go over it with a marker to tone it down. Oh 9. Final Details: As a final touch, I take my darkest gray. In my case, it is C pipe and add a few more shadows onto the candy itself. Then I soften those shadows with a bright red colour. 10. Final Thoughts: And that's it. In this class, you learned how to create a light pencil sketch, how to work with markers to build smooth colour transitions, and how to add volume, texture, and highlights to make our candy look more realistic. I hope you enjoyed the process and feel more confident using markers now. I would love to see your hard lollipop illustrations. So feel free to post your sketches in the project section and share your results. Thank you so much for joining me and happy sketching.
