This is something which took me a while to answer and master myself, however here it is. This class will take you through a tried and tested process that I have developed to help you find your artistic style.

Follow along and do the exercises with me and together we will discover what we like to see in illustrations, what feels natural for us to draw and most importantly what our unique style is.

1. Hello: Hi, everybody. And welcome to this skill shed Close. My name is Karen, and I am a professional graphic designer illustrator, and I am here to help you find your stop. Now, what is style is the nuances and little details in your artwork that make your art your arm that makes it uniquely yours. Now this may be the way you render in our current. Maybe the way you draw eyes or a collection of all the things combined Now to find style It took me years. I experimented with all different sorts of styles until I was happy and confident to call a cell my arms. Now, because of this, I have a lot of experimentation and reasons into style. And I have combined all of my knowledge into a simple short course to help you find your style in under a week. I'm really excited to share this with you. And I can't wait to see all your unique artworks come together. And for you to find your own unique voice in this visual world. So for this class, you can use any meeting you like. You can do whatever you want. I myself will be using my app. I pro with poor create since because I'm on the road and it's really easy for me to use and do an array of cells that heart Feli will inspire you guys with your heart. I can't wait for us to get started, please during a long And add your projects for each step of the way. But how about we get on 12 1st class? 2. What is Style: hi guys. So before we get started on doing on the actual drawing and the exercise is to go to the cross and really wanted to give you understanding of what style actually is style is look off your drawings. So, for example, The Simpsons drunk very differently. Teoh, an anime manga such as bleach. They both have very unique styles. Picasso had a very different style to Divinci. They all have their unique cells, which assured odd ists in herself and what they truly possess. When you become professional artists like myself, you are very much selling no style, and it's always good to have one or a couple of cells to be able to sell. For example, myself, I have about four styles which myself, I have my realistic during my drawing cell for Children's books. I also have a graphic style for when I'm doing. Infographics and I also have another style which is used for comic based are now. When you're beginning, it's always good to find that one unique stop into work on that and get it best ability you can, and then once that is at its cake, then start exploring and finding secondary styles. Now for this workshop, I'm going to be working on a cartoon or an animated kind of style. But you can use this same process to find a cell of how to make a realistic portrait or excellent, how to make infographics or anything. I will also be working on portrait and people, but you can again use the same technique to figure out yourself for doing still life, doing landscapes, anything like that style. I break up into two separate sections. The 1st 1 is structure, so the shapes which are involved in creating the artwork and the second is renda. So the colors, the painterly texture, which is used, the line weight, all that sort of stuff goes into Rendah. A good example of this is this outlook, which I did just for practice for one of the kids books, which I'm working on. The structure of this piece you can see through the sketch and then the rendering styling can see through the finished The way is the colors and brushes. I hope that this has made it easy for umms to understand what south ISS we're going to be citing off working out what are structural stylus? So please join me the next exercise and we'll get started 3. Structural Style : We're about to get started on exploring structural style. But before we do, I wanted to go through some aspects of what is in structural stuff. As I said in the previous video, I am going to be working on portrait and people in an animated style working on portrait. It's it's quite easy to identify parts of the structure. For instance, if you look at my face, there was clear identifies, such as I knows the bridge of my nose, my eyes, my eyelashes, my eyebrows. There is my hair, the shape of my face, shape of my lips. Old. These specific shapes have been, in my face, a part of the structure of my face. Think of it as looking at a black and white photograph of my face. It's more the texture and color. Simply identify aspects which are in the structure. A good way to do this is to look at planes of your face. If you want to learn more about how to identify a plane, identified planes and to figure out how to draw a specific portrait, I have a whole class under imports from reference, which you'll be able to access. I'm just using my face is an example. For instance, if we were also going to be considering animals, we want to consider it there and not of me as the structure. For example, if I was driving Cat, am I going to draw the cat around? He's gonna have a big rib cage or a small group kitsch. We'll have shop floors when I'm drawing. Well, I drove with angles or relied role with fluid lines. All these things that to do with destruction during the next class. We are going to be going through inspiration, and I want you to think about what I have mentioned about structure, about the angles and shapes with drawings. When we're looking for inspiration, this will help you a lot in trying to figure out the structural stop off your I hope to see you the next cost 4. Inspiration: welcome back to class for in finding your style, we're finally getting closer to actually starting on drawing. But when finding your style, you do have to do a lot of research. Find out what you like and what you don't like before you put pen to paper. But we're going to be doing now is the first part about projects. But I'm going to be finding inspiration off odd ists and illustrations that we like that we would like to build Angela style. So what I would like you to do is to go on Pinterest interest. It's a great side. If you want to find what people like what's popular, it's more for crafting rather than office treasures or instagram as a shameless bug. Here is my instagram accounts. Instagram is my favorite place to find great oddest, and it's really good artists. This is my If you want any inspiration from my page, feel free to use it or DV not or any on website and find oddest switch you like, collect some artworks from them and put them on a merry board. It is always good Teoh name your references and to be able to give them attribution If you're ever going to show your mate boards Loyal work. The following is some oddest which really inspiring. And I used for my book. Please, if you do like that work for looking on instagram bail old really great and beautiful people in have fun finding your inspiration Once you've collect your inspiration, please in forget to put it down in the projects I would really love to see what inspires you and what you guys like in not a fun and I will see you in step two for this budget. 5. Inspiration vs Plagarism: as we were looking at inspiration in the previous exercise, I wanted to have a little in salute here and explain to you the difference off being inspired by an honest and plagiarizing that work. Plagiarism is any more than 10% of another honest work in your own. This could be tracing their work or using their saying style and posture in your drawing, just changing the character. It could be directly using their work and saying that it was your or just taking out a section of their work and putting into an illustration. You have to be very careful when you're getting inspired by other people's work that you aunt blatantly plagiarized. An easy way to solve this is if you a drawing and illustration based of an artist that you love base of a character that you love to always actually their work. If you're going to publish online, for example, I be doing Fan not lightly on my instagram what movies that I like, But I always give attribution to either what the movie is or the artists off that. That way people know that the characters are my own and that I'm not taking full credit for the creativity that went into this piece. It doesn't matter that I started off with a blank canvas and finished the whole outlook myself if the idea of style came from someone else. If you have any questions, please, I feel for you to go down in the discussion. I would like to really make clear copyright and plagiarism and what that really means, especially for young oddest, because sometimes it's an honest mistake when you copy someone else's. I heard you guys understand more now about the difference between inspiration, plagiarism and to just always be careful. I just want to reiterate that if you're ever inspired by someone else's work in a piece that you do, if you're going to publish it online or tell someone else about it, please just put a little comment down in the description toe. Let people know that you were inspired by this other office. See you in the next exercise 6. Structural Attributes: everyone. I hope that you have your mood boards ready and have a bunch of inspiration for my previous exercise. It would be great if you had up to 10 on ists because that way we have a lot more inspirational who from to create our style. Now what we're going to be doing in this exercise is we're going to be going through and picking pieces out of each of our inspiration that we can see the structure so that we can identify things that we have drawn to a structure. And then you say, you know, not looks. So Here is an example of me just pulling bits and pieces from structure off an image of structures. And so the image I'm using here for you is by Kalata, Dica told. I hope I said that right? And she is any meteo on Instagram. She's got really great. I wanted to go through these image because she has a very consistent throughout her work. So things you can see here is the small nose sticking out is big eyes to find eyelashes and small eyebrows. She always has a find up, a lift and dimples on the cheeks you really ant decides expression. There is always a little bit of texture and a little bit of definition to her hair and eyebrows, long neck and shopping and knuckles and rounded tips. Now go along and do this for every single piece in your it take doesn't take a lot of time , so done like it's going to. It took me about 10 minutes to 20 minutes todo with images. Things that I found that I really enjoyed were larger eyes and nose is not really a defined bridge of the nose and round faces. I hope that you can see some correlation between the thing you like in the illustrations that you have chosen. Please get this list together and put it down in your projects that everyone else can see all the different attributes that you picked up trying to pick up at least 10 different attributes for each of the images that you're looking at that way have really looked in depth as to the structure of the image. If you having trouble, please just message me done the discussion. I'm more than happy to help you out. You can just post the picture you're having trouble with that. I give you different advice as to what different parts of structural attributes that I see them once you've done this will move on to the funding on X exercise. 7. Six Different Structures: so I hope you'll have this lists ready. What we're gonna do now is they're gonna look throughout this and find features which are re occurring. So for me, that was small eyebrows, undefined bridges, dinners round eyes, big eyes, small noses, round faces to find an undefined shaped head. It's OK if you have a couple attributes for the same part of the face. An example I could have round eyes. And I could also have square eyes because I left birth. That will actually work really well for excess. Next, I want you to make random combinations of all these attributes and split it up into six categories. What we're gonna do is we're gonna draw same thanks six different ways with different star actuaries that we enjoy for my inspiration. So I'm going to get started. So he see that I'm drawing just six different faces. The 1st 1 has alleged forehead. The 2nd 1 has bigger eyes. The 3rd 1 has a different shaped eyes in a high definition. On the eyelashes. These were a little aspects and I liked off my inspiration. Now I recommend keep referring to your mobile just so you can refresh your eyes. Is Prince in the full one? I reject the face because in a few of my inspirations, they had a more shapely phase in the 5th 1 I actually divine a nose completely because one of my inspiration had that. And in the last one, I made really lose. So, as you can see for my illustrations, I have six completely different versions of the same things. Some seem, well, cartoon and younger than others because of the style I'm posting like this one. Yeah. Once you picked your favorite place, we can get on to the next exercise. Please leave your six faces down in the products, Fuller. And if you having any trouble about figuring out 66 different ways, this message mean this discussion, I can help you out. I can't wait to see all your projects. See you in the next exercise. 8. Refining Structural Style: Hi and welcome back, Teoh. Finding your style now the last exercise we went through. Andrew. Six. Individual fixes in different styles based on the inspiration off off favorite artists and what we like to say. Now we're going to see if we have found our structural style out of your six faces that you drew in the previous exercise. Find your favorite now. What I want to do is to look at the list of attributes that used for that style, whether it be brown eyes brown. Today's shop chin knows all those different aspects. I want you to draw a different face or a different object or whatever you're driving in that same stuff. This is gives you a chance to see whether the style is fluid coming from what you really enjoy, George, because there's no point having a style of drawing. Would you constant to draw. So how about we give it a go? So here I'm just going through and illustrating in the same style that I did in my six illustration in the previous exercise, which you could check out in the previous video, the only things I really changes, adding a little motion to the face and giving a bit more. I lashed definition, but other than that, I really like the style. I hope you found your style. It is okay. If when you did this illustration that he tweaked style that you were working with in the previous exercise, you might have found that you're more comfortable. Draw the years this way the face was too shocked or the angles with harsh or lines to food . That's okay. The point of this exercise is to experiment, to find what you're comfortable with. And yourself, If you didn't quite feel comfortable doing this single illustration, try and reiterate again. You can draw up the same face that you did in this exercise or a different one. See what feels comfortable for you to draw. I hope that this brings you close to your structural Stop. I really can't wait to see what you guys did is your sketch. It's Please leave down in the projects below. I would really appreciate it calmly to see you guys in the next exercise to now we're moving on from structure style rendering cell, and we're going to see a complete turnaround. Illustrations catch you in the next one 9. Rendering Style: Hi guys. Welcome back again to finding your style. Now we're going from structural cell and moving onto rendering styles, which is actually the more difficult part off this process. Rendering style has, ah, whole more in it than structural sell. It could be anything from the color palettes, which you use to the brush in the medium that use to the line weight and all the little details in between. Because there's such a wide array, we're not gonna go through a lot assists and pick individual style attribution each of them . What we're going to do is we're going to go through our artists and pick each of their rendering cells and see which we like the best. In example, a rendering Salman flat blood colors that you get in a continent such as hokum on Or it might be the detail brushwork off and acrylic painting. It might be the way that someone's using watercolor or the line on which is someone is easing. It might be the unique color schemes that people here I'm just going to show you a few examples over rendering stalls. So they did just some artworks that I've done obviously a country full thing just because the dimensions off the video screen. But this is a reading style, which I'm really fun both for lately. And also I had to do other millions. Other digital, such as water colors that as an example of that, too, even though it's a large, can be broken up into different categories. Burning up into texture, line and color Comma includes shades that you're using as well as the depth of color in your artwork, whether it's really bright or subtle and the shadow off your lighting land includes whether there is lines are not in your out. Look how thick they are and how they represented, and texture includes what type of brushes you're using, whether you have a highly textured object or flat based, These three categories come together to create a unique Brendan style, which is the finishing pot. Think of the structure as the cake and think of the rendering style as the trusting. Now we've let a little bit about what you're rendering. Style is let's get into doing some rendering 10. Six Different Renders: time to get into rendering. We're going to be doing a similar exercise to what we did for structural style and have six unique faces, except all of them again have the same structure. So when I want you to do you use to trace or replicate in whatever me using face, which you drew for the last structural exercise, the final things which had style that you wanted lightly draw out six times and I'll be the structure for you to revenge accountable. Then I want you to choose six unique rendering styles from your inspiring artists. Render each of these faces in a different way. You'll see how different Allah look just from your rendering, even though they've got the same exact Stalin. I'm gonna get started entry when I so here I am going through, and I'm rendering each of the six faces in a completely different way. So I started off with eight cartoon flat way, and then I go to know lions and then for fun. I did for a long, detailed sketch using the six B pencil on procreate. Then I went through and I decided to do my favorite style, which is using a painfully brush digitally, and then I added lines to it to see how look like, well, Lana, And finally I did a pop outside. Uh, this is really fun place to experiment. So experiment with size, but you black, but you never tried before. I hope you really enjoy playing around with rendering. I know that this part of the excess made it more challenging for those of you who are using digital medium. But don't worry. For those of you who are using digital media, you might just be single medium like pencils or what color paint. I want you to make sure that you're rendering is based off watercolor artists, so you might be using their color combinations or what? The way they're using lines or the paper type things that has a lot to do with your texture , especially in water. And you can figure out the subtle differences in rendering in that single medium and how that can impact the look of your in the way. You want your finished artworks to look. So now we've had fun and we've done. There's six different rendering cells. I'll see you in the next exercise, and we will finalize a full style of structural and rendering together to find our own special style that we can call our 11. Refining Rendering Style: welcome to the final class of this Siris for finding your style, What we're going to be doing, that this class is picking a favorite rendering and structural cell, which we used in the last exercise and re creating an artwork with that combination and seeing if that is exactly what we want. So from the six faces which he created in the previous exercise, pick your favorite. Then I want you to go and make a completely finished artwork. I want to start off drawing in that structural style, which we had figured out earlier for unique face or a unique amel, a plan to whatever you're drawing, and then I want you to render it in that style, which you love. While you're doing this experiment, make sure that you're comfortable drive itself, that it feels flew into you and that you're happy. There's no point picking a style, which you think looks good but hate drawing because that's not kind of inspire you to pick up your pencil paintbrush anytime soon. And it's okay to do more than one version off this case. You might draw one in that rendering style. Your chosen with that structural cell and it doesn't feel comfortable. I want you to take your time and look at what you have done and figure out why it's not feeling comfortable for you and maybe change or tweak a few things. Style is ever evolving, but we need to find that starting point. That's strong point, which we can always come back. That is what with Eunice exercise. I can't wait to see your projects, and I can't wait to see what styles that you amazing I look forward to seeing the old down below. If you have any questions, please hit me up for discussion more than happy to answer your questions. I'm gonna get started now on my own illustration. So I picked the final style in my rendering style and the final style in my structural solve. That was a complete coincidence, but I really like this unique rendering. Stolid. I hadn't tried before, especially digitally, so I just had a go. It's old flat color and I absolutely loved how it came out. So there you go. I found my own unique style. I hope you guys like it. I shall do again. I can't wait to see you go out works. And I'm really excited to see what each individual has come up with. Thank you for joining me.
