1. Introduction: Have you ever had
a collection of someone's art that you
wanted to keep it in a journal or wanted to create one based on
your favorite book, movie or TV show. Hi, I'm Katrina cats of paper pens and coffee
on IG and YouTube. I'm a self-taught artists in many different mediums
and lover of journals, writing and drawing in them and even creating some from scratch. I'm so happy to offer this new series of classes
here on Skillshare, which I call just journaling. This first-class, I'll is sharing various
journals that I've used and created in the past year from a
hub and Nietzsche, different art journals,
journals that I've created am I do is traveler's notebook from the traveler's company. At the end of this class, your takeaway will be able to have a better understanding of how there's so many journals out there waiting to be used. You have a better
idea of what type of journal you might
want to use that's in your stash or one that you might want
to buy to give a try. Looking forward to sharing
this journey with you and just generally
see you in class.
2. Different type of journals I use: Okay, let's get started. In this segment, I will
show you the variety of journals that I use
on a daily, weekly, monthly, sometimes
bi-weekly, bi-monthly, or even when the
mood strikes me. For example, I use this
yellow one for sketching. This one is one
of my newest ones that I received and
I'll share with you what's inside of
it. This is an A5. I use this size the
majority of the time. Here's another A5 used
for collage journaling. Here's a large
sketchbook where you can decorate on the outside. This is my hope and Nietzsche, do we have any hope in
Nietzsche users in class? You'll get to see you how I use this particular hoping HE, and this is my official
traveler's notebook from the traveler's company in Japan. The project for this class is to let me know which
journals you've used, which ones you'd like to try. There's a PDF for
you to use to keep notes on each of the sections today and leave
your comments under the project section so I'll be able to read them and respond.
3. Large Art Journal: This is my art journal. I really liked this
one because of the first subtotal of
using it either way, left to right, right to left. It's spiral bound. So when I open it up, I always have a flat
working surface. I'm going to do a
flip through now. And if you're not familiar with the word flip through is when an artist or journalists will show you the
finished product. Inside there journals. For example, this one
is a gauche paint and I did a white gel overlay of the different decorations. I like doing free pizza, practicing things, as
you can tell, rainbows. This is an infinity sign. This is in watercolor and
I practice spraying on the watercolor while it was
still wet to see if I can do clouds and waves. I was in a museum mood when
I did these two pieces in. So you can see how you can just scribble all over
the page and then go back and fill in the
blank spaces with color. However you visualize
those scribbles we're supposed to turn out. You can also do sampling. This was a set of pens
given to me by my friend. Next few pages, I challenged myself or just
using one color to doodle. And as you can tell, I was pretty successful. I wanted to do more
on the blue page, but I was trying
to find beauty in the blank space by not
completely filling it up. In the back. I joined a Zoom class
earlier this year where we only had so many minutes in a certain theme
and make a collage. And this is what I came
up with for my collage. And this is a collage. I did buy a printout
I got from Andy Ford, which I will share one of
her journals later in class.
4. A kit I used to create a journal: I'm really proud
of this journal. It's one of my first
journals that I created, putting on a spiral bound. It's from Andy Ford. She gave us a little
booklet to journal in and to add dimension in it. But I was afraid I
would run out of rooms. So what I did is I opened up that journal and added some pages from one of
my favorite magazines, like this page that says notice and dream is
from a magazine. And then the other
pages are from her kit. And the other items that you see all over R from her kit too. Putting a journal together is a wonderful way of expressing yourself creatively
because you're making the journal for yourself. Unless you have a friend
or relative in mind, then you would, might, might want to focus on what
their intentions would be for this journal or what they particularly like to have in it. I'm just showing you all
the pages that I created. I think it tied in well with the magazine pictures
that I chose to use. As you can see in this one
where the peace sign is, that's kind of a shiny page. That was one of the pages
in the journal and I wasn't sure if I'd be
able to write on it. So I just use it like
a decorative page. And then some of the other
pages from the magazine I decorated and I'm may
or may not write on. She also had a clear stamps set, so I use that on a
variety of the pages. And this is just another way of having a journal store-bought, but then also it's
homemade because you are tailoring it to your liking. I'm gonna put you on
fast-forward now so you can enjoy the rest
of the flip through.
5. Traveler Notebook in the style of Harry Potter/Dark Academia: Here is my Harry Potter slash dark academia travelers
notebook that I created. I sewed it instead
of using Staples, and I also used my
sewing machine to give it a little more
detail throughout the book. I really liked how
this turned out. The pictures and other items that you're seeing here are from the Internet and from Canva, canva pro you, they give
you a lot more choices. I typed in Harry Potter. Some of these items showed up. I printed the majority of them
on a clear sticker paper, which then melts right
into the paper and gives more of that dark academia
look that I was looking for. You notice there's
some short pieces and white pieces of paper. And that's where I was trying to do a little more
junk journaling. Or there's quotes on
some of the pages. Throughout. The book, has more
of a dark academia layout. Quotes. The very middle of
the book where I sold it is the slithering
house, you guessed it. I'm part of this slithering. So i so top and
bottom to kind of give it a different
feel when I put that picture there and then on the slithering and
she could tell I just painted the backside so it
looks like a stained glass. These items are from Canva and these ones
are from Canvas. Also, I will list below in
the description of the type of paper I use for printing
out to put in my book. There's another part
I put where it was a little too much of the lighter. Showing you how I cut apart
a quote to follow up on, Here's a charm I found
that I thought was perfect to use as a
bookmark or for this book. There's no limits when
it comes to creating your own junk journal
or your own journal, as I've shown you in
the previous lesson. In this lesson, it's just up to you what you want to
put in your journal.
6. Collage Journal: This meant Dory MD
notebook was met for one project and I decided I didn't want to
do that project anymore. So I took the cover off and then took the rest
of the pages out. She can see the saline binding. It was easy for me to do. I created a new homepage
or front page with some stickers and I wrote my intentions when I wanted
to use this book for, for fun and for collaging, I have a modest stickers that I received over the
last couple of years through Happy male and have
gone to the dollar store. And I've never used them. So I decided this is
one way to use some, there's some of that
messy journaling like we saw in the
other art journal. And they just stuck
some stickers on there. Did a little paper weaving
on this side of it, and those are from a magazine. Once again, you can use
anything in your journaling, whatever you want to do. Left this picture, Viola Davis, so I had to put
it in my journal. Just a plain piece
of scrapbook paper. Does pineapples. I never knew what I was
gonna do with it. So I just took the
whole sheet down and just rub them
all over the page. That's from the Dollar Store. I can't think this is from
one of my artists friends, Shauna, on the left here. I was trying to find
beauty in the blank space, so I didn't do
anything over there. This is an envelope I received, never used it for any of my art, so I just stuck it in here. Here's some more
items I received. And last but not
least for right now, is a collage that I tried to do and I like how it turned out. As you can see, I
have a plethora of more pages to create
more collages. The sky's the limit. What type of collages
will you create?
7. My A5 Stalogy: This is one of my
other art journals. Yes. You're allowed to have
more than one art journal. This is a state ology book. The majority of people
that get these A5 use it for journaling as
in just pure writing. Or they use it for planning. As you can tell,
it's a fine paper. But in a couple of seconds
she'll say watercolor used upon the paper and it
works so well with watercolor. You could also use the
very teeny tiny top where they had numbers
and letters for you to circle the date if you're so inclined wanting
to use it that way. I started this in January
and I was going to do roughly draw a picture
every single day. And as you can tell, I wasn't able to keep up
with that and that is okay. That's the beauty
of art journaling. You have a goal or a wish that
you want to do, go for it. And if you're not able
to do it at that time, that's okay to come back
to it when you can. The first month I
just use pencil. I wouldn't let myself
use anything else. In February as you'll see
the front page for February, I followed along with
the ladies doodle examples that prompts
that she had. I did that March, I started to do some urban
sketching from my travels. I found some of my photos and I just
sketched it out and use watercolors to to emphasize
the picture's a little more. In April, I did some sketching of bones because I
find that fascinating. And then I went back to
similar urban sketching. And then also I did some
messy journaling where you just scribble
words out if they don't have to be perfect
penmanship and then you put a photo or a sketch over it. And then I did June
as c identity, go back and color it
in and that's okay. I just used a black
marker for that day. This day I was feeling the urge to use by
gold paint again. So I did a half of
a butterfly wing, midsummer, a flower
from my garden. And then I just did
a shadow sketch of my dog just using some
Chinese black ink that I had. So I have plenty
of more pages to fill and I'm looking
forward to doing that. I use these tabs,
these number tabs, this is from a
different thing and it doesn't come with
these number tabs. But what I did is each
month I will put a tab in. Then I can quickly
flip through it. And so I will be able to do
that from July to December. That's it for this one.
8. A5 PU Leather 6 Ring Binder Notebook Cover: This is my A5 PU leather six
ring binder notebook cover. I have variety of family because I love all the colors and
I can't just pick one. Right now. I'm using the yellow one, but I wanted to show
you the inside of the purple one so you
get a better look at how the rings looked
in all of the pockets. As you can see,
there are six rings. There's two pen or pencil
holders that you can use. Then there's a
variety of pockets. One is deep and then
others are about the size or the credit card and not very deep
as you can see, that car doesn't
go down very far. You have a little secret pocket here and here on the back, and also inside the front. When you close it, it's
magnetic, which is nice. So as it gets fluffy, as we call it in the
journaling community, it will still close now
onto the yellow binder. Besides having fun decorating
it with stickers that I received unhappy male and
from my creative friends. I put in a envelope from one of my old happy planners
which I use anymore. Sticky notes. Sticky Notes is a
journalist's best friend. I'll explain that
in a future class. These are dividers I
created from pages that I made in a crafty group I belong to called
fussy cutting cuties. I thought it made
a great divider, so I ran it through
my laminator machine, put some reinforcements
on the circles, and now I use it to divide
my book into sections. This particular section
is my happy male. And snail mail is I like
to call it letters, received a letter sense. I write down I gotten a letter from and who I've sent one out. That's a great way of
wondering if did I write that letter or
have I forgotten? Here's another divider I made. And then this is
a writing board. Instead of spending a
dollar on a writing board, you can create your own, especially if you have a
lemon knitting machine. So then when you put
it under the papers, they won't indent on
to the next pages. This particular journal,
I've been using it for roping quick journaling, as you can read from the
title, My Sunshine today. Today I am pause right now. Hiatus. I just wanted to
put down a quick blurb. Is not a dear Diary. Journal. It's not a laundry list
is just a quick thing. And sometimes that's
all we need on a daily or bi-weekly thing and
just writing it down. The page on the left I used
for June and July and August. I changed it up a little. I put hiatus instead of pause. And under those are the
things that I don't have control of or I need to do. So I'm like, I'm not
doing this today. I can't do that today. I won't worry about that. I decided I can do it
tomorrow was a neat way. In cell A5, I printed it on both sides and I
stuck it in here. And so far this particular
style journaling has helped me out a lot. I do have other journals
I'm going to show you, which I use a different
form of journaling. But right now, the quick
blurb is perfect for me. Then I think I
have one more word that I used as a divider, which helps me keep papers
that I haven't used yet. Wave for my journaling and then my happy meal
planning part. There we go. There it is ready to be used. So that's it for this
particular journal.
9. A5 zipper leather cover: If you're familiar with
the journaling community, you will recognize this from Gallon leather company
in Istanbul, Turkey. Each of them are handcrafted. I forgot to show you the fountain pen holder
that slides inside this. Yet on the left you can
see other items that you can put in the holders and n
slots that I'm showing you. The only thing I was curious
about was the key fob. I've left it in there so I do not lose it that I don't know what I will put on a
key file right now, A5 notebook in there. But what's really clever
is that it has a cutout. So if you don't have a notebook, but you have a pad of paper, you'll be able to use it in there as I'm going to
show you right there, I can just slide it in place. This is my lit from 1917. Sorry if I butchered
that name, It's an A5. I'm using it in this
particular cover. A lot of times. It's for bullet journaling. Thus the end. This is some of my watercolor abstract artwork I put in there. I don't put down an index, clipped it to the top so I
can flip to the first page. Now, just like in
my creative journal that I am using for collages, I wrote down what I wanted. My intentions were
for this journal. They might change,
they might not. And then I made another
writing board out of a piece of watercolor
paper does laminate. It was the perfect
size to fit in there. This particular journal
has very thin paper, as you'll see in a second, is you'll be able to see the
rainbow right through it. I like putting a writing board
so it won't in debt or if something believes
to the next page and won't bleed onto
the following pages. So I'm looking forward to using this journal in that manner. What sets this brand apart is that it has a little
pocket in the back there where you can put receipts or little mementos that you might want to put
it in your journal. It also comes with stickers where you can write and put on the very front or
inside the cover what that journal is about. I like how it has
the elastic band. So I used some of them in
the past just like that. But if you put the
elastic band on, you won't be able
to slip it into that clever little slot there. So this is new item
for me to use, a new way of carrying
journal and I'm looking forward to
using it in the future.
10. Traveler's Company Notebook: I've had a few notebook
covers my time, but this is right from the source travelers
company in Japan. What sets them
apart is that they have their elastic
tie hole right in the back of the cover
and they imprint on the back that it's
from their company. You can change them
out as I'm showing it. It's very easy to pull that
out of the hole and you can put a different Alaskan
elastic in there. Here are some trinkets
that I decided I wanted to put on it. What I have in this as I'm
showing you right here is the the salt bonus I guess, of the leather and
how thin it is and how it just dispense with ease. Then I have to insert. So first one is a plastic, one has a Ziploc
thing where you can put extra elastic
goods are items. And then the front is, is designed for little notes or business cards
if you collect it. And then before I
show you the box, there's a cardboard
insert which helps protect the notebooks from the leather so it
doesn't rub off. Sometimes things rub
off on each other. So that's nice. Dot data protection. Show you that I have
two notebooks in here. Some people actually
do three notebooks, but right now I only have two, which will do a flip through, you know what, a
flip through his. Now, don't be class. And I'm going to remove this from the notebook because it'll be easier to
do a flip through. Now once again,
as I've told you, any of the other journals, it all depends on how
you want to have it. Right here showing you how you have the elastic
around the middle. And that's how you hold onto the notebooks so
they don't slip out. I'm going to put
this to the side and we're going to do a flip. This has all these stamps from the travelers company did
to the fact that I went to a store that was having a display and I took advantage
of using their stamps. And that's this particular
one is a traveler's notebook. And you can tell
from this rectangle that I just showed you, plus they have their
name in the front of it. And so wonderful quality of paper if you're
into fountain pens, this is the paper for you. So I'm going to proceed
doing a flip through. I wrote a little blurb about how excited I was to use
this for a trip that I just took it to a an event and Texas
just just recently, they gave us these popcorn
bags and it was a perfect fit. So what I did is I
put it on the glue down on the first page and
then I inserted receipts, little pieces of paper in there that may or may not want to use. This is one way of
tracking your journey. I just made a little map and put some watercolor
to decorate it. And there's a place that you
can go to cope Bucky switch. Everyone told me to
go to and I did. Here's our receipts
that I got from some treats all along the way. We went to a famous craft
store outside of Houston. And I took some pictures with my traveler's notebook
because that's the thing that a lot of us do that how long you just
document it that way. And these are some of the
stickers I'm pointing out that I purchased at that
particular store. We went to another
famous place in Round Top tax is
called the junk Gypsy, which was very interesting. The rest of these pages are things that I did,
I went to die, so they have them in Texas
and I took a picture of the items I wrote
and then I just did a arrow pointing thing of luck. This is what this is. This is what that is. That's what you can do. That's one example you can do for your traveler's notebook. Here's that bikinis again. They have the penny machine. I love using those
for as a souvenir. And I just started
putting other items and photos in the book to
keep track of my journey. Some of the ladies
at the camp gave us journaling card holders, so I took advantage of
putting those in the book. I used washy to decorate
the back of the pages. Yeah. I was showing you my
traveler's notebook again. I use some stamps. I use so cutouts that I
received some art work. This is a piece of artwork of that lady that is in
the picture with me. This is another piece of artwork from this lady that's
with me in that picture. Then there's some lady
said I just met for the first time and they created certain
items for us to use. So I'm going to put
you on fast-forward so you can enjoy the rest
of this flip through the very back of the book
I use for ink swatching, which will be explained
in more detail in classes to come with this
series, just journaling.
11. A5 Hobonichi Cousin: This is the hub of
Nietzsche cousin A5 size. This is the copper out of
all the covers out there. I chose I love it to protect it. I bought the plastic cover that was specifically designed. So you will be able to
get into the pockets. Here's some pockets that are sizes of like business cards. Then there's a few
side pockets that are big enough to slip
in some treasures, like some postcards that
I'm showing you here. Besides the pockets
and the front there is a little slip pocket in the back of the
journal cover also. This is an April start
instead of a January start, so I do not have to purchase
a new one until next May. The reason I did that
is I do not want the pressure of starting
a journal and January. And this is a great option to have if you feel
that same pressure, they give you monthly
fees, weeklies, and then Daly's, which is
split up in each month, which I'm going to show you now. I really like how you
can just decorate the inside and the
outside of the covers. The sky is the limit,
as I always say. If you're wanting to
just have a glance of the month and the year they give you three years for that. They also give you a rundown of all 12 months where
you if you have real important things
to write about, then we come to the month lease. And just like any other
calendar journal, it gives you the days of
the week in little boxes to insert your information
or to decorate. There's two sides
where you can have more room to decorate
or write down things. And each Sunday, as I
pointed out, starts in red. And what is nice because
it started in April. I have until next May
before I have to purchase new ones so I can plan out
all the way to May of 2023. Now we're going to
get into the weeks. I'm not going to show you
what I've done so far for I use the weeks for
personal journaling. But here's an example. In July, each page comes
with a full week of columns. It shows you the
month, the year. And then one of those
glands little calendars and they always say in
red which week you're in. If you're one of those
people that need to quickly look at what
week you're in. This will help
you. They give you a little column for
jotting down notes, and then they start
about four o'clock in the morning until four
o'clock the next morning. So if you're one
that has to write down things by the hour, this would be perfect for you. I personally do not have
that type of schedule, so I use it just to write down personal journaling that I
just kinda like a brain dump. And it goes all the
way through March of next year, which is nice. So once again, with the cousin, you have the months, they have the weeks. So you don't have to purchase a new weekly calendar
until March of 2023. They give you a couple
pages in between, which I have used already. For example, I decided
that I wanted to purchase certain pens to use just for this journal and these
particular colors. So I did a sample to see
if it would work for me. And as I'm showing
you on the back, there's barely any bleeding
that goes through. Maybe just a little ghosting, which is fine by me. And I use the other pages for
when I had some purchases. I bought some PET
tape from someone in Canada and then I purchased some other items
from another shop. And this is something
cool you can do in your journal when you purchase something just to
show what you bought. Now we're going to go into
the dailies and then it goes all the way through
February of next year. Each page has a page. I'm showing you. I decorated the front page of the
month of April and then the following
pages is when I purchased something,
it's really popular. And then journaling
community to put down a couple of items
that you have purchased. I also did some water
coloring in this. When I go to a cafe, I like to draw the
coffee cup that I used. Sometimes I've found some
papers or stickers or artwork from other friends
and I want to put it in here. As you can see on the right. That's another example of water coloring on this
particular paper. Now, I know in the
previous lessons I showed you about my
collage journal. And now you're seeing collage
in here and you're like, Why are you collaging? And here you have
a collage journal. Well, the difference is in this one is on that
particular day, as you saw the rainbow stickers, I got in stamps that
was from a friend in the UK and I wanted to put it
down the day I received it. Just like right
there, it's got sick. I wrote that down. Then I was sick
for a week or so. So I just stapled the papers
together so I wanted to feel bad about catching up alone. Behold the day I
was feeling good, I got some more happy males, so that's the day put
down the happy now. And then the rest of the month, I put down some stickers because I wanted to
use those stickers. Here are more examples of
how I use the daily pages. The hub in HE is a
great source for fountain pen ink
swatching to see if you like the way that it dries on the paper in case you want
to use it in your journal. At the time of this recording, I was getting ready to
put down memories of a trip I was just on in Texas. I'm using my stickers keynote there that I've
mentioned before. That's helpful to
remind me what I'm going to put on that page. And the daily pages go all
the way through February. They give you a few pages after February to
do other things. I use them for fountain
pen ink swatching. The rest of the pages have to do with the Japanese culture. So class that is the
hope and Nietzsche A5. Looking forward to hearing
what you guys think about this one and all
the other journals that we went over
in class today.
